    We came in for a late lunch on New Years Eve. We came here to eat their Shanghainese dumplings but unfortunately they were out of them by the time we came :( We did get to try their crab dumplings which weren't the juicy kind but they were still pretty good. Our waitress made the dipping sauce for us tableside. We also got black bean sauce noodles which were totally different from what we've had before. They hand pull their own noodles in the back. Overall, the food was just okay. This is the first time I've ever been to a Chinese restaurant where we were the only Asians in the restaurant, including the staff! The staff was super friendly and the restaurant was pretty busy for 3PM.

    I eat a lot of Thai food, so Chinese usually bores me. Tried this place for lunch with some coworkers on a Saturday. We arrived shortly after they opened and there were plenty of open tables. By the time we left, the place was packed. It's always a good sign when the majority of the patrons speak Chinese. During our lunch, a tour bus of Chinese arrived and they all seemed pretty happy with their food. We had Snow Pea Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and Sesame Beef (which isn't on the lunch menu, but they were more than happy to oblige). All entrees come with a deliciously peppery hot and sour soup. Everything was scrumptious and fairly priced. The waiter was attentive without hovering. Cons: The teapot is so heavy, we could hardly lift it. The tea itself is so flavorless we initially though it was just hot water. No sugar is offered for the tea. Parking sucks here. The lunch menu offers no descriptions of the food (although they also leave the dinner menu at the table so you can read it). All in all, we can't wait to get takeout for an office lunch soon!

    First time we went here it was good to very good. But then we got some take out and it was just ok..... Tonight it was VERY good. We had the sauteed dry string beans, northern style fried rice with shrimp, and Chinken Kung Pao. Everything was excellent. They were just about fully packed but service was very good. This is now our GO TO Chinese restaurant in Portland

    Finally found a great place in Portland for excellent Northern Chinese food! Fantastic service and food! The atmosphere is alright too. We were seated immediately. The waitress was knowledgeable about the food and very attentive. We were given green tea and yummy hot & sour soup with our lunch. The Sichuan Pork was perfect and spicy. The prices are super reasonable. Overall what a great place to have lunch, dinner or take out. YUM!

    This place has some pretty solid Chinese food. The food and the presentation give off a strong sense of "We really want to be P.F Changs!", even down to them mixing up sauces for the appetizers at the table. We had the pot stickers which we're pretty solid, but had a bit too much ginger and the sauce they mixed up was nothing to write home about. The Shandong beef was very good, but this dish like the pot stickers, was overladen with ginger. The best thing we ordered was the Mu Shu Pork which was very tasty. Do not fall victim to the siren song of the Tan Tan Noodles like we did. It looks delicious on everyone else's table but is incredibly bland. This is basically noodles covered in peanut butter and oil, order something else. All in all, this was a surprisingly good meal and a great option if you're looking for some non-greasy, non MSG laden, fresh chinese food.

    The food at Shangdong Restaurant is very much Americanized, so if you're looking for authentic Chinese food, this isn't the place. I thought I would give this place a try since it has such high ratings on Yelp. However, I should have known better when I saw not a single patron who was Asian. The second giveaway was when I opened the menu and everything was in English. Two of the 3 dishes we ordered were far too sweet and they overdid the sauce. It's probably a great place for those who like Americanized Chinese food. It's just not for me.

    First time to eat Shandong cuisine in the States, and the impression is not all bad. I ordered one Shandong prawn and Shandong broccoli. The broccoli is good, but I don't approve the prawn. The freshness and tenderness was buried under all its rich sources. It is a wast.

    I don't know why you rave about the place, but give it a 4 star. If you're going to write a review, either give the place a 5 star or tear it up with a 2 star. The pot stickers are big and delicious and the drinks are good. 5 star.

    Finally good Chinese food in Portland,wait, make that great! I am so glad we cane here for dinner with my sister and discovered how delicious Shandong really is. It's hard to choose between the sizzling rice soup, shitake mushrooms with chicken or cashew chicken as to which is my favorite. There hasn't been a dish I haven't liked. The ONLY thing I could say bad is that they get busy fast and the waiting line forms... I guess that is kind of a good thing because it means the food is good.

    If I was just reviewing the pan-fried dumplings this would get 5 stars. They are f-ing fantastic, huge, and a good deal at a good price. Shandong gets 3 stars because I'm Chinese and I want the quality in the dumplings to extend to the rest of the menu. It's weird to me to have such authenticity and quality in one dish, and watered down flavor in the rest of the menu. My whole family agreed that the kitchen seems to be timid or holding back what they could be doing with the rest of the dishes because they want to appeal to a non-Asian crowd. That said, the dry-fried green beans are tasty. The rest -- blackbean chicken, dan-dan noodles, wonton soup, are all just OK. I will go here strictly for takeout five-star dumpllings.

    I've been searching for great Chinese food ever since a trip to Texas a few years ago, I figured that I would never find anything as good, well here it is. This place had freshly made...everything. The cooking oil used was fresh, didn't have the old burnt taste that oil gets over time. The portions were enormous and they served really great tea, not the generic black tea.

    Excellent spring rolls, much bigger than anywhere I have every been. Husband had the yakisoba noodles and the sauce and seasoning was excellent I almost ate all of his plate. The owner/head chef came out to say to everyone and make sure we enjoyed our food. Thumbs up!

    I love this place! I only wish they had more dumplings! I don't do pork or beef,so dim sum is usually out for me.The little(bao) are not steamed bread as you would think,but very nice dumplings. If the Mu shu veggies weren't so good,I would gorge myself in all appetizers.Soup was bland.Needs garlic,ginger, chinese parsley, and shoyu.Spring rolls,ditto. Excellent service,as usual.Tricky parking is the only drawback. The spinach looked good enough to steal off my neighbor's table!

    Cheap and great Chinese food, which rises far above its suburban location in Hollywood. Shandong is just plain good, with standout Northern style fried rice and mu-shu pork. We go for the fastest take out in town on a weeknight. It's like dating the girl next door and realizing she's a nuclear physicist/rock star, aka finding good Chinese food north of 82nd Street. Plus the fresh local ingredients, and the complimentary green tea while you wait for your order. Every time we order, when the food arrives, we do a culinary take-out high-five. Try it, Yelpers.

    i need to start with the negative to get it out and done: YOUR TABLES ARE FAR TOO FUCKING CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER. i get it. capitalism is good shit. good reviews on yelp are also good shit, that is why i came. BUTTTT, i will now only get take away as i have been here twice where i had a couple on each side of me. their tables were maybe six inches from our on both sides. i like to go out with my friends and family. part of that going out involves talking. not gonna lie, but our favorite topics tend to be inappropriate. often bowel movements, often sex. i know, the two don't go together but in my group of friends they do. we do tend to lower our voices when we get groty but even a volume between miming and whispering would be heard by your neighbors if you get seated on the wall on the same side of the door. it really actually ruined the experience as the people on both sides were clearly listening to us and were clearly aware when we were listening to them (dulllll). i have been three times in total and the best thing by far has been the sesame beef BUT i have not gotten that red curry crab noodle thing as the people i share with don't like to go as spicy as i do. not that impressed with anything else. the dry spicy chicken ok and the mongolian beef was slightly above meh. the spinach with garlic was super meh unless you like healthy food with no flavor, they really do some amazingly artistic work if you let them mix the two appetizer sauces on the plate for you. i think we have had nearly all the appetizers and i tend to like them more than the entrees. the best one is the pan pacific wontons. i did not think it was either fantastic or awesome but i like it enough to come back but the takeaway better bring it. if you are going to go, wait for a booth.... but so far this is probably one of the best chinese places i have been to in this city...

    FINALLY - good Chinese in Portland! Excellent spring rolls - packed with veggies and a very light fried wrapper. Sesame Beef & Cashew Chicken were excellent and they even made 2 dishes without garlic for us. Dry sauteed green beans were perfect. Fair prices too. We'll definately be back!

    Tried this place based on great Yelp reviews. We are glad we did. The first description that comes to mind when we started eating was "fresh"! Great service and clean. At first we thought the portions were a tad on the smaller side......but we brought home 3 containers of different food, enough for 1 lunch the next day. Will try again when in the area.

    Shandong is an awesome little spot that feels like a toned down version of PF changs inside. Their lunch menu is incredible and super affordable, you get a bowl of soup and a pot of tea on the house when you sit down for a $6 meal, how awesome is that. The food is spectacular, great cuts of meat prepared well and hand made noodles, pretty hard to beat

    Xiao Long Baos? What a joke. The one's I had are dried up, and taste nothing authentic. I was exited like many after reading the high reviews, but as you can see from the customer makeup of Shandong, they're mostly non-Asians. And I'm sorry, but this doesn't qualify in my books as a quality food restaurant.

    What a horrible experience!! We are visiting our son in Portland. He took us with his two kids to this place for dinner yesterday. I noticed there was no credit cards acceptance decals on its facade windows or entrance door, and that was the first sign showing that this Chinese owner would prefer cash instead of credit cards. The interior were in a not quite comfortable layout with limited booths and fast-food joint styled rectangular tables awkwardly arranged in the tiny main dining area. It was quite busy, so the noise level was deafening. One of the waiters combined two rec. tables for our 5 members, but these 2 tables were in big different heights, making them looked like two steep steps of a staircase. Why these serving persons did not adjust those tables in the same ht. , since table-combining would have been an often required temporary situation to this small dining area with so limited space? we ordered 1) Dan Dan mien that claimed was made by skilled hand-pulling technology. but the noodles turned out to be very mush-mooshy soggy. The flour during the kneading process was obviously with higher temperature hot water for easier kneading and pulling; and that would have explained why this kind of process defined the easy soggy ness once boiled by hot water. 2) 2 orders of pot stickers. Again, the cook used the time-saving hot water kneaded flour to make the wrapping shells, but this time when such dough/wrapping shells were pan-fried with hot cooking oil, the process turned those wrappers into all tough and chewy rubberized shells that was so difficult to bite open or bite off those pot stickers! 2a) when the tough pot stickers were dumped on our tables, the poorly trained moronic waiter put a medium sized saucer in front of us, then without asking, he immediately poured soy sauce, white vinegar and the hot chilli oil like torrents, saying the mixed sauce was for the pot stickers. A well trained waiter with passable I.Q. would not do such stupid thing; he at least would ask the patrons how they would apply these 3 sauces and how much of each should be poured or, at least he could briefly explain that mixture of such contast sauces are popularly used by the Chinese diners, depending how each person preferred, either with vinegar or chilli oil or, without either. Yet this pin-head poured so much of each sauce without even asked our opinions. 3) the so-called fry rice northern style we ordered turned out to be just a mediocre and ordinary fry rice, the scrambled egg was poorly processed, and the tossing/stirring procedure also not timely proper. 4) kung pao chicken was neither met the standard processing steps. By throwing several dried red chilli peppers to start the cooking procedure, setting the foremost hot and pungent flavor for Kung Pao dishes is a MUST, but the cook avoided it to save his nostrils. He instead threw those red chilli peppers last just to make the dish look more colorful. 5) pork chow mien: when we took our first bite, all of us immediately made a face, because the chow mien just tasted funny! It got a very abnormal sour odor and funky taste. We three adults at once stopped the kids to eat it. We then signaled one of the gossiping waitresses and informed her the possible already perished and stinking chow mien, asked her to advise the kitchen about this unhealthy finding, required her to ask the kitchen people to check the ingredients, some of them, the pork or some of the veggies might alreadyrotton. Guess what? She said the kitchen people won't understand what she or we talking about, all she could do is either we order another dish or she just delete this pork chow mien from our our bill. She didn't even at least try to warn the kitchen for a possible outburst of food poisoning from their perished food ingredients!!! Oh, well, l was facing that immitated Chin-Yong soldier originated and excavated from the tomb of Emperor Chin. Obviously, facing such figure from the long dead and buried in a noisy small Chinese restaurant full of mindless, careless and heartless morons, thoroughly pissed, yet luckily without getting diarrhea so far from their rotton food, is definitely a blessing!!! Oh, FYI, two more moronic things we encountered before we stepped out of this God awful stupid Shandong eatery we also considered worth mentioning here: A) we asked for 5 small to-go boxes. The waitress concurred, but failed to give us a necessary carrying plastic bag until we peeled her off again from their chatting group. "Oh, you guys need a bag?" WTF?! Your kindness intended us to each separately carrying one box by hand going home?! B) the waitress put 5 slices of orange and 5 cellophane-paper wrapped fortune cookies on top of the small strip print-out paper bill in a tiny saucer and sent to our tables. The juice from the cut slices wet and soiled the fortune cookies wrappers, and the small paper bill was completely drown and soaked in juice....... Oh, God of Mercy, do you want me to keep curs

    Shandong is a world apart from the many mediocre Chinese establishments in PDX... Freshly-prepared ingredients, inventive takes on familiar staples, warm decor and service -- simply put, it's exceptional Chinese cuisine, a rare breed in these parts. The owner Henry occasionally says hello to the guests, a nice touch that only magnifies this restaurant's claim to excellence.

    I work service industry and try to be really forgiving about service. I understand we get busy, we have hell-customers, we have no-show coworkers. I get it. It's rare I bump my reviews down a star level for service, but I just had to in this case. We've been to Shandong 4 times in the last 2 months. With the incredible amount of good food in this town, that should say something about how I feel about the quality of the food. Always spot-on. Not American-Chinese. Proper, spicy, quality deliciousness. Amazing noodles. Great flavors, done quickly and really well. What a shame that every time we've been here the service has been so lacking. Each time, one of us has had to go the counter at least once to ask for missing items. (Tea cups, soup, wontons, water, napkins, chopsticks.) Seriously, these are all basics. We're not asking for much, just enough to be able to eat the meal we ordered. I know it's busy, but I need utensils and maybe some water and napkins. We will come back. The food is great and I believe in this place. Just iron out whatever is going on between the service folks and this will be one of my favorite spots in town.

    Have you ever had a craving for something, but for the love of God, you didn't know what? This place is full of those moments. It's all so insanely good. The only things we've ever ordered more than once are the potstickers and the hot and sour soup. Oh, Jesus, the hot and sour soup. If it comes down to me, the 1978 Chicago Bears, Randy "Macho Man" Savage and a gaggle of Nuns fresh off an orphan-saving binge for the last bowl on earth of this amazing soup, I swear, every last one of those folks are going down.

    Thank you Yelp for leading me to this wonderful restaurant. You know your in the right place when you see people waiting in line until 8 or 9 at night. First visit last night and wanted to order one of everything. Started out with the shrimp dumplings and was delighted. We noticed that there was one noodle dish that seemed to be on every table, Qwai Wer noodles and they were incredible. Also has the Cherry Pork and Mongolian Beef. All were delicious, including the inovative drinks.

    Shandong has the best Chinese food in Portland. As I've been on the hunt to find a restaurant worthy of this description for over 5 years, I write this with confidence. If you are from the northeast US and miss Chinese food from home...consider this your home coming. I predict that I will be eating at this place entirely too often from here on out, and I look forward to proving myself right.

    Found it by accident one night, and what a great find. You know how most Chinese restaurants taste exactly the same, like they all order from the same canned food company and then just heat it up? Not Shandong-this was finally the departure we were looking for. Everything was fresh, interesting and super flavorful.Great portions too. We split a small hot n sour soup and could almost have called it good with that. ( BTW- it is the BEST hot and sour soup I've had in Portland, hands down.) My husband ordered the Shandong fish and literally was served the ENTIRE fish. Giant portions for the price and real food.

    Really delicious! We had the hot and sour soup and Shandong Chicken with brown rice. It was perfect for lunch- light and satisfying. The chicken was sliced very thin and I was afraid a little of the "fermented black beans" but they were fine and the dish was great (and just the right amount of spicy). The service was also good. We'll be back the next time we're in Portland.

    For a neighborhood chinese joint it's not bad. The ambience is nice and for chinese joints, that's rare. Some dishes are consistently good. My son' loves the lemon chicken and the green beans are also excellent. Happy hour is a good deal and the dumplings and offerings are good. But the rest of the menu is strangely inconsistently in quality. Sometimes actually pretty excellent and other times not good at all.

    I must admit that Sungari's dragonwell has already won my heart in the upscale americanized chinese race, but I really enjoyed my experience here. The owner served my food, and was extremely friendly and informative. I tried a few of the crab apps and 2 chicken dishes on different visits, everything was fresh and well seasoned, the environment was nicer than the average chinese joint. All in all these guys deserve to stick around for a while!

    The place was nicely decorated and quite cozy but the food wasn't that good. The tan tan noodles were not very good at all, just edible. The beef and brocolii was not bad but not a very big portion. Hot and sour soup was not very good...not authentic at all...so much black pepper in it. I'm chinese, trust me when I say it's not authentic at all. I was surprised to see some people said this place was close to authentic...sorry it's not.

    I'm glad we chose this restaurant to go to! The food was fantastic and I loved the friendly atmosphere. The menu was set up in a more family style fashion, which I don't know if I am a fan of. I guess I've gotten used to having my soup and rice included with my main course, not bought separately. My boyfriend, friend, and I tried the sweet and sour chicken, crispy fried ginger chicken, and the spicy dry fried chicken. They were all delicious but the ginger chicken was basically half of a chicken, bones in, fried, and cut up. Not exactly what we were expecting and a little difficult to eat. The service was a little slow but they were also very busy so I won't take away a whole star for that, maybe 4.5 out of 5. We will definitely be going back again!

    Their name Shandong, is a province in China famous for noodles and buns. We went in the restaurant and only saw an american-chinese food menu. we asked if they had a menu suited for chinese taste, they had none. We asked if they served a very popular shandong dish which even I knew how to make, they did not. We left without eating and hugely disappointed. The name of the restaurant suggested a certain amount of authenticity, but you will not find it here.

    The place was nice, the staff was really nice, and the food looked nice.... but they took an hour to complete a two person order (apps and main course) and the food wasn't anything beyond just normal take-out Chinese food. There are way better places to eat and spend your money in Portland.

    SO, normally this is a cool place. Food usually consistent, although the service and the location are ridiculously sub par. Tonight, we ordered take out, just like every other Friday for the last months or so. We get our food home, and the main dish is completely wrong. I call the restaurant and get a "manager" that argued with me for a solid 10 minutes about what I had ordered and what I had actually received. How could she POSSIBLY know what I was looking at on my plate? Really? So, she keeps interrupting me every single time I try to explain to her that I am happy to drive the 15 minutes back to show her what I had gotten. So, I feel like I need to raise my voice a little. She then starts telling me that if I am going to yell, she is going to hang up, because she is at work. What exactly does this person think her job is? So, I then ask "can you please replace the dish?" At which point she sheiks at me "don't call me a b*tch" and hangs up on me. Sorry, ShanDong, the $30 you made off of us once a week, no matter how piddly to YOU, is gone now.

    This is reasonably priced chinese food, but it's more like a thai restaurant in terms of being good quality. The prices are good and staff is friendly. Tea, soup, and a big, big bowl of noodles + veggies with a great flavor not encountered in a chinese restaurant before.

    I have tried Shandong three times, and I am calling it quits. The interior is lovely and the the service is fine. However, the food is bland and undistinguished. Since the reason I go to a Chinese restaurant is to have tasty food, not to have drinks with parasols, Shandong fails my Test #1. About ten blocks up Sandy, Zien Hong has far better food at lower prices, though it's not as pretty inside, and I don't think they serve liquor. There are numerous other options in Hollywood and Rose City Park for pho or Chinese food worth eating. For most diners, there are many better options close by. I can recommend Shandong to those who prefer bland Chinese food and are looking for an attractive setting for dinner and a drink.

    Better-than-average Chinese food, at very reasonable prices. (Around $10 per dinner entree) We like the nori soup, the Szechuan prawns, the cashew chicken. The mu shu is just pretty average (good, but not better than any other mu shu). Atmosphere is nice, pleasant, clean. Staff is friendly. Service is good. They also have a separate vegetarian menu, and they seem willing to accommodate dietary restrictions. Not much parking available - there's a bit lot next door, but it doesn't belong to the restaurant, so park at your own risk!

    The sweet and sour chicken came out with a sauce that was so dark red I was sure it was blood until I tasted it. Kinda scary. I tried the cashew chicken on another visit and it was ok, but way too salty. The waitress recommended the potstickers, so we tried them. The potstickers themsleves were fine, but they actually have you mix up your own sauce for it consisting of soy sauce, hot chili sauce and vinegar. What happened to actual potsticker sauce that all other Chinese restaurants I've been in use? Even PF Chang's uses real potsticker sauce and not that silly mixed up crap they put on the table. The version the waitress created for me was way too hot.

    When in Portland for business, there are many choices for dinner. For a great dinner, I would reccomend Shandong. I have been in numerous times and the place is always busy. The staff delivers superb service and you hardly notice the wait if there is one. Potstickers are very flavorful and huge! Definitely an appetizer that you can split. Cherry Pork is a must try. Very tasty with the right amount of sauce. If your in PDX make the effort to go to Shandong, you will not be disappointed.

    Decided to try the new place in the neighborhood for my birthday dinner. The waiter overheard that it was my birthday while seating us and immediately offered me a glass of wine or beer on the house. (I went with the house red. Very nice!) The server was patient and cheerful as we ran through our questions about dishes we weren't familiar with. The food was absolutely wonderful. My favorite was the cherry sweet and sour pork. I thoroughly enjoyed my celebratory dinner.

    Blend an aloof waiter with a flat affect who never mentioned any specials (there were some we later discovered) and charged us for rice without telling us there was a special charge for rice. Then add in food that was over-olily and not very distinctive. And for the cherry on top add in frenetic music blown through a room of 60+ year olds. Will not be returning.

    I recently stopped in for a quick bite while traveling on business. I typically don't expect much from a take-out place when I travel, but I have to say Shandong blew me away! Everything I ordered was delicious, but if I had to recommend just one menu item it would definitely be the calamari! I also wanted to comment on the general appearance of Shandong. We've all been to those dingy, run down Chinese restaurants that leave a lot to be desired in terms of cleanliness. I can tell that the owner really cares about cleanliness and presentation of not just the food but the environment as well. To summarize, whether you're looking for a family-friendly sit-down meal or just picking something up on the way home, you owe it to yourself to give Shandong a try!

    Shandong is the perfect antidote to winter weather. We went on a very rainy November night, and felt instantly at home. All the details are carefully thought through, from the jasmine tea, which is served in classy teapots, to the lovely decor. The menu is diverse, and features dishes we haven't seen elsewhere. After much deliberation, we ordered the sesame beef (fluffy dry-fried beef with a lightly spicy sauce) and crab curry noodles. Delicious. The staff were great, too. They were clearly excited about their restaurant, and were extremely attentive. It's the complete package--great food, great prices, great decor, and great staff.

    The first good sign was an attentive waitress - a rarity in Portland (I knew she was not local - turned out she was from New Hampshire)...she made a solid recommendation (after she actually listened to what I liked - spicy, seafood) with a spicy calamari dish (excellent, btw)...she managed to single-handedly take care of about 10 tables, and still remain attentive...she also seemed very knowledgeable about the kitchen, and the preparation of the dishes I guess this is a recommendation of the service primarily - but the food was great, as well! Having had Chinese food in LA, NYC, SF Bay Area, Vacouver, BC, I was pleased with the freshness of the ingredients, the delicacy (in this case, calamari) in which the seafood was prepared (slightly chewy, but not rubbery). The prices, I felt, were reasonable as well. Convenient location (though other places haven't managed to survive here).

    We got a couple restaurant.com certificates, because a friend of ours really likes the place, but we found it rather mediocre for Asian food. There are a number of much better places. Atmosphere was fine, but I go to eat. I guess we'll give our friend the other certificate.

    Wrote my first review back in September and have been back at least once a month since. Parking is a pain for lunch but worth every ounce of frustration. Best soup I have ever eaten and have tried several things on the menu. I like to try everything but find my self reordering what I have already tried because I liked it so much. Henry you have outdone yourself! Must come for dinner............ I am already planning an overnight stay to get my lazy friends up there to try the Shandong experience. Need a good concert or something.....................

    This is a great place. The food is awesome --- some of the best I've ever eaten. I'm a vegan and the waitress Kelsie explained to me that, in addition to a few items that are obviously vegan, practically anything on the menu can be veganized on request (she is also a vegan). Thus, I asked for the sesame beef --- but as sesame tofu. The only way to explain my reaction is to say this is the single best tofu plate I've ever eaten, perfectly spiced. There was a LOT of it and my husband, who is not a vegan, said it was awesome as well. The tea was also great --- very flavorful --- and the portions of everything (my son had braised tofu, my husband had some pork dish) were very substantial. The bill was shockingly low --- we got out of there for about ~$40.00 for three people. I can honestly say I hope we can visit Portland soon so we can go back there!

    Had been wanting to try this place for a long time and decided it would be fun to try it on Christmas Eve. We had a reservation and arrived on time to a JAM PACKED restaurant. Our reservation was acknowledged although useless, as we were told that there were no available tables. Our wait was about 40 mins. The place was steaming hot from the kitchen and shear body heat from all the other patrons. Once we were seated, service was rushed and things were delivered to the table one at a time....with a great delay between each dish served. Our sons meal was actually the last to the table and I had already eaten my meal and had my leftovers packed. The rice was forgotten. Overall, the food was pretty good. We had Potstickers (very good), Wonton Soup (will pass on this next time...broth was just eh), Mu Shu Pork (yummy), Dry Fried Chicken (tasty, but very salty), Lemon Chicken (what you would expect in flavor, good quality), Fried Rice (basically flavorless, to my disappointment). I am sure alot of the experience had to do with the fact that they were simply overburdened because it was a holiday. With that said, we still paid full price for a lesser experience. We will definitely give Shandong another chance though.

    Best chinese in town as far as I am concerned. Housemade noodles, rich broths, HUGE pot stickers. Everything is not greasy. The standards like Beef with Broccoli are done well. Service always friendly. Recommended.

    My foodie neighbor showed up on my door step a couple of nights ago with a Shandong menu in hand saying "You gotta try this place! It's amazing." Hmmm....I'm suspicious, particularly with the familiar "There's no good Chinese food in Portland" refrain that's been rumbling around town for years. We went on a Friday night and the dining room was packed and the servers were jumping. We waited less than five minutes and were ushered to a table. The waitstaff were super efficient and friendly. The food was fresh and hot and extremely generously portioned. The pot stickers are giant and plump (you get 6) and served with vinegar and hot oil (my favorite condiments) and the filling is delicious. The dough was thick and chewy. It was good but the pork filling perhaps could have used a slightly thinner wrap. Minor complaint; they were still enjoyable. For dinner we had Manchurian Beef. Deep fried, salty and delicious. When you crave naughty Chinese food this is it. We also had Dry Sauteed Green Beans. They were hot and fresh and garlicy. The owner stopped by to ask how our meal was and chatted with us in spite of the busy dining room. making us feel at home. A week later we got take out which we didn't enjoy quite as much. Either we picked the wrong dishes (Mongolian Beef and Fresh Spinach and Garlic) or it just didn't quite survive the trip home. Nothing we could put our fingers on with the take out; it just wasn't as delicious as the dining room experience. From our brief experience it's the fried dishes that shine. This place has a good looking happy hour menu that I'd like to check out and we will definitely give take out another try.

    We went there last night for their Grand Opening and had a great time. There were 4 of us and we ordered 2 appetizers, a soup, and 2 main dishes to split, family style. They were out of a few items since they'd just opened, so instead of the shao loong bao and noodle soup that we were thinking of, we ordered shrimp dumplings (homemade dough), vegetable mu shu, the sizzling rice soup (my favorite), the Shan Dong beef and the black bean pork dish. All were delicious! The meat was tender, the soup broth was light and flavorful... I could've eaten the whole family-sized bowl myself! We also had excellent service from a cute, young waiter. He kept us smiling and was very attentive. The owner, Henry, came by to our table and talked about the recipes, his vision for the restaurant, and his professional background. It was a really nice way to end the evening and we'll definitely be back to try all the other goodies! This is not typical Chinese American fare-- the Shitake mushrooms are fresh, not dried... they make their own dumplings and noodles. You can taste the difference. Nice warm ambiance too! GO!!!

    The noodles, though ridiculously long, are amazing, fresh, and tasty and all the good things noodles should be. I ate the noodles with spicy peanut sauce and I must say they are pretty yummy. The chicken noodle soup was a hit! The fried spring rolls were ok, a tad ho-hum, but the mapo tofu was quite good served over brown rice. I would definitely come back and explore further items on the menu.

    My wife and I have gone twice -- once for lunch, once for dinner -- and were greatly satisfied both times. We don't order spicy, and so our dishes -- Prawns & Snow Peas and Chow Mein -- were straightforward and uncomplicated, but still nice. The potstickers are hearty but not greasy, and the crab dumplings do pack a little bit of wallop in the aftertaste. The hot and sour soup was perhaps the best I've ever tasted; no over-emphasis on vinegar, which was much appreciated. Service was good both times. Tonight we expect to go back a third time in a week. One could make a case that the non-spicy dishes are perhaps a little bland, but I'm not in that camp. The whole package is reminiscent of the old Sungari: an elegant, reflective atmosphere and clean, simple food. Highly recommended, but beware that parking is limited despite first impressions.

    HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT FOR THOSE SEEKING HOT FOOD. Saw the good reviews on here, went with a couple of folks craving spicy, and everything we ordered on the menu had the chili pepper next to it... very disappointing. Nothing was spicy at all. I'm not just saying this as a picky, macho "oh that's not spicy" sort of way. None of the dishes had any noticable capsaicin in them. When we asked for some hot sauce, they brought us chili oil, which was not hot. We asked for something else, perhaps chili flakes in oil (like pretty much every Chinese restaurant has)... no, they didn't have anything else but Sriracha, which we ended up putting in everything. Needless to say, despite the lovely interior of the restaurant, the food was very disappointing. I'm going down to Chinatown next time. It may not look as pretty, but at least the "chicken salad" isn't just chicken breast on sliced cabbage with peanut sauce poured over it.

    Two words: Judy's Noodles. There are other places in town doing a fine job with housemade hand-stretched noodles. But these Judy's are dressed so wonderfully: with spinach, shiitakes, garlic and jalapenos. Get an order of those, and maybe the eggplant dish too as a nice complement. You all set.

    This is probably the best Chinese restaurant in Portland. Admittedly, the bar for Portland Chinese food is quite low, but this place has great soups and entrees, and has a wide range of options to suit everyone. Plus, there are a ton of great vegetarian options (ask for the vegetarian menu to get the complete choices). Really good food.

    At last!!! A fabulous Chinese restaurant in my neck of the woods. My husband and I went to Shandong for dinner the other night after some friends recommended it and were not disappointed (my husband is picky so that's saying something). It's a casual, comfortable atmosphere and the service was quick, efficient and friendly. We ordered the Shandong beef and crispy, ginger chicken and they were both absolutely delicious -- fresh, full of flavor, cooked to perfection and not at all greasy. We are definitely going back (I'm already craving the Shandong beef) and telling everyone we know who likes Chinese food. I hope this place sticks around -- I could see us becoming regulars!

    We've been twice now and I'm a little underwhelmed. All in all the food is above average, but nothing outstanding. We've tried the Cherry Pork both times and that is the best dish we had. It's a good take on sweet and sour pork. The Pot-stickers are huge, but otherwise unremarkable. The hot and sour soup was quite chunky with shrimp, chicken and mushrooms in a peppery egg broth, but again while good, it was not great. The mu-shu pork was cut very thinly and quite tender, but very delicately flavored, almost bland. The spicy dried fried chicken was not very spicy, and lost out to the much more flavorful Cherry pork in our party. Finally the noodles in the Shandong Bean sauce noodles were nice and fresh, but the dish otherwise made little impression. Maybe we aren't ordering the right dishes, but we've tried to sampled the menu broadly and have yet to find anything to bring us back for a 3rd time.

    This place is really good. You should try it sometime! I like this place because the food is amazing! i am no expert in Chinese food but dang they are good to me! The staff is friendly, the place smells good and the food is great! i recommend the hot pot chicken curry, it is Delicious and the house wantons!! the little down fall is that their is little parking!

    This place is fantastic. With the exception of the noodle dishes, I have yet to have anything on the menu that was not delicious. Very well priced so its a great opportunity to go family style and try multiple dishes and flavors. This place is a MUST GO.

    The food here is decent. I wouldn't say it is amazing or the best Chinese food I have ever had. The house sauce is lacking flavor and there is not anything special about it. Next time I will probably order a different dish to try. No iced tea. Ugh. Hot tea is readily available (kind of a Chinese staple) and pretty good. A nice palette cleanser and a good way to relax before the meal. Do not expect amazing service. It is just ok. Servers do a lot of "driving by" and nothing special about their service. We will be back because it is so close to our house and within walking distance.

    I've eaten Shandong on numerous occasions since I moved to the Northeast back in July, and usually I'm, at the least, satisfied. there's never any of the usual regret that accompanies the American Chinese food meal. so yeah, in general, I'm happy with Shandong. Not enough to go on the internet and tell other people. But last night surpassed my expectations all around. I'd been holding off on trying the pot-stickers because pork isn't really my jam, but on recommendation I gave it a shot, and I know now that holding off was definitely a mistake that I'm going to have to live with...all those days spent not knowing about these pot-stickers.... Ok so I guess there's a little regret, but it's the good kind. Delicious freshly-made regret. the happy hour deal is four of these big pork dumplings for I think like four bucks. I ordered the Manchurian Beef (w/ side white rice), another item I'd never go for at just any Chinese place, but since I trust Shandong, I gave it a shot, and it sorta blew my mind. The sauce was sweet, not too gingery. It didn't overpower the other flavors and, even more importantly, it didn't show up soggy, which is the #1 thing I hate about these sorts of dishes and the reason I never usually order them. But yeah, the beef tasted like beef and as I mentioned it was fried and crispy under a layer of sweet ginger sauce. I also snagged some of the sesame tofu off of my lady's plate and it was, as usual, perfectly fried. The kind of tofu that pops when you bite in but isn't all mushy in the middle covered with another of the sweet sauces. Dining in is definitely worth it for the super freshly made hot food. Service was prompt despite being real busy at 8 on a Wednesday (I think we actually took the last table)..all in all i'm a fan of this excellent Chinese food experience. try the pot-stickers!!

    I had read on Yahoo that Shandong supposedly has the best Chinese food in Portland. After my second visit last night, I may have to agree. The first time I ate here, I had the ginger chicken, which was good, but not great. Last night's food was terrific. My friend and I split the spring rolls which were tasty rolls of fried goodness with lots of chopped veggies inside them. With the hot mustard and sweet and sour sauces, they were perfect. My entree, the Szechuan pan fried shrimp, was perfect. Large prawns in a super tasty ginger and garlic sauce, a taste explosion in my mouth! My friend's chicken with mushrooms tasted clean and fresh, but also flavorful. I like that they bring you an orange slice with your fortune cookie. The servers all seemed stressed, but it was busy. Our waitress was very fun and friendly once the dining room had emptied out a bit. The dining room is pretty but loud. What can you expect though from a place this popular? I'm definitely coming here again soon!

    BACKGROUND - Growing in a Chinese household with amazing cooks in my family makes me have specific standards for Chinese food. I'm no Chinese food snob, I can appreciate authentic Chinese dishes like tofu clay pots but I also have the occasional craving for joints like Panda Express. PROS - Extremely polished ambiance for a somewhat small restaurant. Tables are clean; menus are helpful with photos of food to clear up any confusion. And should you have confusion, friendly waitresses who are fluent in English come over and help you with any concerns and questions. Actually, most of the waitresses are not Chinese and if they are, they speak perfect English. The cooks and owners are Chinese, a fantastic business booster in my opinion (my date agreed with me). This is what separates Shandong and Lucky Strike (one of my favorite Chinese restaurants) apart from other Chinese restaurants: Waitresses and waiters that are able to tell you what is in your dish compared to Chinese wait staff that merely repeat the name of the dish to you due to language barriers. I'm an American born Chinese and know both languages plus Taiwanese, but for those who only know English and want some good Chinese food, places like this is a relief. We ordered: 1. Hot & Sour Soup - Tangy, spicy and they add seafood! Delicious, will order again, definitely one of the better Hot & Sour Soups that I have had. 2. Spicy Dry Fried Calamari - Think of the highly sought after Salt & Pepper Squid meeting a Szechuan Squid. Perfectly battered squid (amazing batter by the way) with a sweet and spicy sauce poured over it...pure delight, probably my favorite dish there. 3. Shandong Beef - Reminded me of Korean bulgogi, if you like steak, order this. Tender pieces of steak perfectly "bento-fied" haha. 4. Tan Tan Noodle - I can honestly say this was a letdown, there was no flavor, I felt like they took a jar of peanut butter and melted it on top of handmade noodles, and tossed in some peas. 5. Beef Chow Mein - Very standard, nothing too special...wouldn't order again. I would like to try Judy's Noodles next time though, based on fellow Yelpers' reviews that noodle dish sounds like a hit! CONS - Parking! Beware of the parking lot, it is reserved for the nearby family clinic center nearby, I actually took a risk and parked there at 5:30. I went into restaurant and Googled what time the nearby business closed and found out they close at 6:00. So for 30 mins, I did regular glances out into the parking lot to make sure my car was still there LOL! There is street parking available, but those were often taken...maybe you can do what I did but do so at your own risk! Another con? The Tan Tan Noodle, just don't bother. If you want delicious Tan Tan Noodle, go to Lucky Strike. POINTERS - Go after 6pm and park in that damn parking lot! Order everything except those peanut butter noodles aka Tan Tan and you are good to go!

    Wow. Pretty pathetic. Ordered the lunch portion of Shandong Prawns. About 10 little shrimp, NOT prawns, tossed with a chili sauce, thrown on a plate with a ton of green onions. They tried to make the portion seem larger by giving me a ton of badly cooked steamed rice. Servers are too busy to check back with me even to get my money. The only good thing about this place, and I mean ONLY, is that pop comes in a can so you can take it with you when you want to get the hell out of there. The parking sucks too. How do places like this even draw in the clientele?

    I feel like I made a "wow" discovery last week when my neighbors invited me to join them at Shandong. How many times had I driven by the big red sign without giving this restaurant a second glance? In the front window is a digital photo frame that scrolls pictures of the menu offerings. For some reason this made me giggle, but really, it is a good idea and an improvement on the 'old' way that Asian restaurants sometimes display poorly colored, photocopied images of the food (or worse, an actual sample plate that has been sitting out for hours). Inside, you will find a tastefully decorated urban space and classic American-style Chinese food. There's a good sized wine inventory along one wall in back. We were there on a Friday night, and the restaurant was full but the wait wasn't bad. This is one of those places where everything that comes out of the kitchen looks amazing. We were craning our necks to see what others had ordered and by the time we were seated, which was only about ten minutes later, it was almost impossible to make a decision. We started with the pot stickers, which may be the best I've ever tasted. You know how sometimes when you eat a pot sticker, you avoid looking at what's inside? Not so with Shandong's. You can see that they are made of quality, identifiable ingredients; more like a good meatball than a lump of pate. They were perfectly crisp on the outside and succulent in the middle. Fantastic. We also ordered the dry sautéed string beans, which were garlicky and cooked just right. The Manchurian beef had a light crunchy batter and a flavorful sauce that wasn't too spicy to exclude any heat-shy folks at the table. Tan Tan Noodles were interesting--each noodle is hand-pulled and around three feet long, and they arrive in a large bowl with a pair of shears to hack them into a more manageable length. The server will do this for you if you want. The Tan Tan were unfortunately not to my liking--the soft noodles and peanut sauce melded into one starchy mass with various vegetables and chunks of meat poking out here and there. Everyone ate a little but nobody in our party really cared for them. I took the leftovers home to my guy, however, and thought they were pretty good, commenting that just because it wasn't what I expected didn't mean it wasn't done right. Okay, good to have another perspective. Rice is ordered by the serving for $1-per, eliminating the problem of too much or too little. I like the concept of ordering only what you plan to eat, but I am not sure how I feel about an extra charge for rice. It seems nit-picky. Why not raise the entrée prices fifty cents or a dollar instead? Fortune cookies were prepackaged and terrible, but of course not a deal breaker. Service was stellar. Shandong seems to do a bustling takeout business, of which I made a mental note. I will definitely be going back, probably for takeout as well as dine-in, with a long list of other things to try. Shandong Chicken and Judy's Noodles both look terrific and are at the top of the list for next time.

    This was one of our first Portland meals. We picked this place because every time we would drive by it at night there was a good sized crowd inside. I learned a long time ago that a great way to judge whether or not to eat at a Chinese food place is whether or not anyone is sitting in there. If no one is there, assume it's for a good reason that you don't need to know about. It seems that the theory also works in reverse, because this is now my go-to place in Portland for Chinese food. Anyway, my husband and I pulled ourselves away from the tedious task of moving and unpacking rather late in the night. We ended up walking into the place about 30 minutes before they closed and they were only too happy to seat and serve us. The waitresses we had were so funny and so cool. We talked a bit of sci-fi...Battlestar Galactica and Firefly. Not knowing anyone in Portland, it was a welcome addition to our dining experience. We decided to do something we never do, which is order noodles. I couldn't help myself when I found out that their noodles are hand made in house. Plus something about seeing "Zia Jiang Bean Sauce on Noodles" just made my mouth water. I had no idea what it was but I knew I had to order it and it was GOOD! My husband ordered the "Red Curry Crab Noodles" which reminded us of a dish that we used to eat when we lived back in NYC (with very fond memories)...maybe a little spicier, though. My husband has a thing for fried rice and when he went to order our waitress surprised me by saying something like, "Okay, you already have a lot of food coming because the dishes are big. I don't want you to over order." It made me laugh because that really seems to be opposite of what a waitress should say. Shouldn't they want you to order as much as possible? She also asked us which way we wanted it, because there are apparently two ways to prepare fried rice and that is dictated by the region. Not having any food in the fridge of our new house, we ordered it anyway and we chose Northern style, which is what we are used to. I think it could have used more soy sauce, but it was otherwise good. When we reheated it at home the next day we just added the soy sauce and it was perfect. I really love this place. It is not your typical Chinese food place in that their menus are structured and explained beyond what you typically see at other Chinese restaurants. The food is northern cuisine and it's definitely made with better ingredients than I'm used to seeing at other restaurants of the like. I definitely recommend you give this place a try. I think it will be your go-to place for Chinese food, it's definitely ours!

    There is an abundance of Thai and Vietnamese restaurants in Portland. Sadly, there aren't that many decent Chinese restaurants. Shandong is using that to their advantage. The food at this place is decent and moderately priced. On my last visit I ordered the chicken with shitake mushrooms. It was good. My friend ordered a noodle dish with beef. He liked it. In the past I've ordered the mongolian beef and it was also good. I have a couple complaints about this place: one: there was way too much customer service. On my last visit four different staff people approached our table approximately 12-15 times during our 40 minutes at the restaurant and asked how our food was. Give a girl room to breathe! Two: the water in the restrooms is freezing. is it too much to ask for warm water to wash my hands in the winter time? Three: the main dining room is freezing. Turn the heat up a few degrees so I don't have to eat in my coat Four: the new addition is too hot. I had to strip off a bunch of layers because the overhead space heaters were too much.

    Best Chinese food I have ever had. Great service too. Will definitely choose this place over any other chinese food. Ever. We got sweet and sour chicken and that was amazing! Also got kung pao chicken and shrimp fried rice. Everything was exceptional. Not greasy like the usual chinese food. Very light and flavorful.

    Amazing Chinese food! By far and away the best in Portland that I've ever had. I know there is the joke about chinese food being unrecognizable...but the dishes at Shandong are fresh and flavourful. The vegetables are crisp and not overcooked, and the plates are large and served family style. The staff is always friendly and fast, and their drinks are very good. My favourite dishes are the sesame beef and the hot and sour soup...the best hot and sour soup in PDX!

    This is the best Chinese food Portland has to offer, in my opinion. Spicy Dry Fried Chicken, Judy's Noodles, Shandong Beef, the pot stickers! Oh my! Everything I've tried has been delicious. The service is amazing, and I feel that the prices are very fair for the quality of food you receive. I've eaten here twice since discovering Shandong's tastiness last month.

    Thank you Yelp! I would never had tried this place if not for all the stellar reviews. First and foremost, I judge Asian restaurants by the quality of their meats. All too often I have gone into an Asian restaurant and left hungry because the meat was fatty/gristly or just plain gross. Meat quality was very good. Not excellent, but very good. The 2 main reasons this place did NOT get a full 5 stars: Parking. No fake/soy meats for the vegetarians in our group. I will definitely be returning!

    We were craving Chinese food on New Year's Eve, but wanted a place that was less about crab rangoon and sweet 'n sour everything and more about authentic Chinese cuisine. A Yelp search (hey, how about that) found a lot of recommendations for Shandong, so we went there - and definitely were not disappointed. The place was abuzz and it looked like we were in for a long wait for a table, but we were offered seats at the bar and jumped at the opportunity. Our server was friendly, courteous and attentive throughout, taking the time to explain different menu options and making recommendations, even though she was running all over the place. As for the food? It was remarkable. The Chilean rock crab and shiitake shao loong bao were generously sized dumplings filled with a gingery mixture of seafood and mushrooms, and served with a dipping sauce that was three parts soy sauce, two parts chili oil, and one part vinegar (and mixed for us tableside...err, barside). The pot stickers were enormous and filling, and the perfect ratio of chewy wrapping and delicately seasoned pork. Entree-wise, I cannot stress this enough: get the Cherry Pork. It consists of fried pork in a garlic and ginger infused cherry sauce. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and the sauce was amazing. Definitely a unique Chinese dish. We also ordered the red curry crab noodles. Shandong makes their own noodles from scratch, and they are served with a pair of scissors for cutting since they are three feet long! They were thick and chewy with a nice fiery bite, and the chunks of crab were fresh and flavorful. The atmosphere isn't the greatest - it's a little crowded, and the back room is clearly a recent addition (and was drafty on this cold winter's night), but excellent food and service more than make up for that. If you're looking for authentic northern Chinese cuisine that is reasonably priced and very tasty, don't miss Shandong!

    I don't quite get the love for this place...i've been looking for Chinese closer in and I was hopeful this was the answer...nope. I tried the pork mu shu and the spicy fried chicken and it was okay, but not something I couldn't get anywhere. The problem was that my wife got the broccoli beef and it was hands down, the worse Chinese dish I have eaten. She previously got the black bean chicken and it was not good at all either. Maybe you need to eat the food there (we got takeout), but it will need to be someone else to test the theory as I will not be going back.

    The food is terrific. I especially like the chicken and sizzling rice soup. The cleanliness and sanitation needs a lot of work. Dirty dishes and dirty bathrooms.

    Great deals on lunch specials, but you will end up with tons of rice compared to the entree. My meal was kinda meh. I ordered the Garlic Prawns lunch special and I've never thought what I would get was deep fried sweet & sour prawns. We had a family lunch here and I tried a bite of noodles from my people who ordered noodles dishes and they were under seasoned. The highlight of my meal was the dumplings appetizer. It was fresh, tasted homemade, and full of flavors. It was kinda a let down because I heard so many good things about Shandong. Well, next time, I will just order some dumplings with steamed rice and call it good. I will give you another chance, Shandong.

    Shandong has good food and decent service. I feel like in many ways, they offer a five star experience (delicious complimentary hot tea always arrives quickly, the meal ends with slices of fresh orange and fortune cookies, the food is always very fresh and tasty), but there are some other parts of the experience that cheapen it (such as paying for rice; really, what were they thinking with that??). Another concern of mine is the way tables and chairs are just crammed into the dining room. On our most recent visit we were first offered a table inches away from a family with a screaming toddler, which was also adjacent to the heavily-trafficked entrance to the second dining room. I asked for a different table (hoping there might be space in the second room), but instead we got stuck in a small table sandwiched between several larger tables. Not only was it incredibly difficult to have a conversation over all of the noise around us, but even the waiters were having trouble reaching the tables because there was so little space between them. As others have mentioned, the prices are on the high side. I feel like, first off, if they really need another dollar for a bowl of rice, they should just raise all the prices of everything on the menu by one dollar and offer complimentary rice. But secondly, if they're going to charge as much as a nice, fancy restaurant, then they need to offer the service and amenities of such places. For example, when I don't finish my entree and ask for it to be boxed, a nicer restaurant would definitely box it themselves, rather than just hand the customer a box and a plastic bag. The food is, as I said, very tasty and fresh. However, it is nearly identical to the type of chinese food you'd get at lesser chinese restaurants, just a bit fresher. I mean, they could offer a completely new take on the classics, they could give them a bit of a culinary twist or elevate them to a new level. But no, it's pretty much the same dishes you'd find at any other chinese place, except perhaps a bit more fresh and presented nicely. For example, we ordered the Spring Rolls as an appetizer. They were practically identical to the sort of Spring Rolls you'd get almost anywhere else, except the veggies in these were much crisper (also the veggies in these spring rolls were cut a little big, resulting in larger-than-ideal mouthfuls for both myself and my boyfriend). And, their spring rolls were just as greasy as spring rolls anywhere else (someone else on here said theirs weren't greasy, but mine sure were). Having said all that, this is STILL one of the better chinese restaurants I've been to in Portland, and I'll likely be back. If you are in the area and want better than average Chinese food, I do recommend them. Just don't expect a five star experience.

    Welcome to the most amazing combination of price point, cleanliness and food quality for "American" Chinese food in Portland. Reading other reviews, it makes me laugh to think people assume this is a legit Chinese restaurant, we live in Oregon people, this is catered to the population. Real Chinese food will scare you, sorry there is no Sweet and Sour in China. Lets break it down, this place is always full of people, but the waiters kill themselves trying to serve everyone. If you do not have patience then order to go and grab a coffee while you wait. Now, this is one of the rarest places that has a week long lunch special, and average price is about 7 bucks. Great options, I'm a sucker for the Lemon Chicken and Shandong Beef. This place is an enigma for my "If the Chinese restaurant looks divey then the food is good" theory. Check it out if your in the Hollywood district.

    We'll just chalk this one up as my boyfriend's lucky day. The day he was bestowed the gift of ALL the leftovers. Leftovers are pretty sacred in our house. Honestly I've been more touched in our relationship by the sharing of higly prized leftovers rather than by receiving flowers. Flowers are pretty, but aren't necessarily something my sweetie has any issue parting with and he gets to enjoy them too. But the sharing of leftovers really shows he cares. :) Okay, down to business. For starters, pay attention where you park! I counted no less than 4 signs from the restaurant advising us not to park in the west lot of the building or risk being towed. There is some street parking and a few spots for the restaurant in the back. Consider yourself warned. If you can't read, well I guess you're probably not reading this review either and you are just screwed all around. We entered a classy little space and were immediately brought some delicious jasmine green tea. Our servers were very friendly and attentive throughout our visit. Upon Yelp's recommendation we got the cherry pork-deep fried in a cherry and ginger sauce. This was my fav, the pork was nice and tender, but I would have liked even more cherry flavor to it. We were also intrigued by their fresh made noodles and as our server told us, they were made as soon as we ordered them. We opted for the red curry crab noodles. I could tell they were fresh, but didn't get a lot of crab or curry flavor, might have been overwhelmed by the peppers. I'd be curious to try another one of their noodle offerings for sure. We also had the vegetable trio and the shiitake mushrooms with chicken, both well prepared, average. Most the entrees set you back about $9-$11 and an order of steamed rice is $1. The portions are large! (Hence the leftovers). Another thing to check out that we didn't try was their happy hour. A fairly good offering, with a drink purchase the items are all about $4. Overall this place was okay. My boyfriend liked it pretty well so I won't protest if he wants to visit again in the future, or you know, has the kind of bad day that only leftovers can cure.

    So far, I've been twice and both times within a week of each other, with a group of people so I've been able to try lots of item.. This place is THAT good. I've had the Pot Stickers (chewy and not enough filling) and Hot and Sour Soup (too much pepper) these were my least favorite items. Now here is what I LOVED: Shrimp Dumplings, Soup Dumplings, Cherry pork, Sizzling Rice Soup, Manchurian Beef, Judy's noodles, Spicy Dried Fried Chicken, Pork Belly Fried Rice, and Veggie Trio This isn't your typical chinese food restaurant. The ingredients are fresh and I didn't detect any MSG. If there is MSG there is a very small amount as I'm extremely sensitive to it. This would make a great date spot! Every table gets a pot of Jasmine tea and it's delicious. The staff is easy on the eyes and the service is wonderful.

    Pretty decor, a step up from most Chinese places. Menu has some unusual items and plenty of standards. Everything I've had has been fresh, good-tasting, and good portions. I've had different things but I think my current fave is the dumplings or the dry-fried chicken. I have always had great service. When I have come with my kids, they offered cute divided kids' plates and kids' chopsticks - a nice touch. Yes, the parking is limited. I have always found street parking though. And once I tempted fate and parked in the "we will tow" lot; nobody towed me. (It was a Sunday.) The main dining room is on the small side, so I would hesitate to come with a big group. Although I seem to remember seeing a side dining room possibly? You should call them and find out.

    Order the cherry pork! It's awesome! I almost want to leave the review with that, but I'll jabber on... Prices are very good! For a great starter trip & in addition to the Cherry Pork (must order), get the following (or else your trip will be missing something... Like following my awesome advice.) House Wontons: Solid offering, traditional and not too exotic. Will please most people. Dry Sauteed Green beans: were super delicious, crunchy, and left your mouth craving more! Order this too. Clay pot curry chicken: was tasty but a bit too soy-alty after a little while... It makes a dramatic entrance to the table however, as it arrives in a cool little clay cauldron, bubbling and sizzling. Worth trying. Noodles: They house make the noodles so order any of them to compliment the rest of the dishes. The noodles we got were a bit on the sweet side, so they will go well with spicy/savory stuff. Great Chinese place and our go to place now for when the Chinese craving hits, which for some reason, is often or whenever we watch Big Bang Theory and/or Bladerunner on TV.

    The food is spectacularly fresh and great tasting. The pot stickers are enormous. I had the seasonal fried rice with pork belly and the seasoning was reminiscent of simple salt/pepper style chinese food and complemented the fatty flavor of the pork belly. What is even more impressive than the food is the service. The waiters and waitresses work together with all the efficiency of a team of crack commandos. Each covering the other's table check ins and assisting with plate delivery and clean up if the other is occupied. It is thoroughly satisfying to see such a high level of customer service maintained even when the place is totally packed. A thoroughly enjoyable experience that I plan to repeat many times in the future. One caveat, the parking can be very crap depending on the time of day.

    ...just tried the Manchurian Beef...wow! It's now one of my favorite beef dishes in Portland; that slight hint of vinegar just does it for me. The shrimp dumplings are wonderful! The juicy inside is reminescent of famous soup dumplings in Vancouver, B.C. The Gwai Wer Nooldes are very innovative and my favorite item on the menu. I've tried three of the many noodle dishes they offer and prefer the thinner, non-Udon, kind. The dried string beans are excellent. The Jasmine rice is normally a bit too dry for my liking. The "meh" dishes included the Black Bean Chicken and Clay Pot Tofu and seafood noodles. Price points are between $9 and $12 and that's a deal given the awesome flavor and portion. For drinks, they offer a deliciously creative orange infused rum. The Lychee Gin was good, but $9 is a little steep. Service has always been friendly, the two or three gals who are regularly there are wonderful. For lunch, I suggest not arriving after 2:00 p.m. as staff is in clean-up mode and focused on preparing their own meals. For dinner, the owner came by our table. Although I appreciated the visit, I found it odd that he felt the need to tout how his noodles were more authentic than those of other establshments, that his noodles are the best in town. Whenever anyone says it's the best this or that, expectations increase more than they should, and a slight let down is usually the result. The place is hopping on weekend nights, maybe a few too many kids running around for my liking.

    My 4 year search for a decent Chinese restaurant here in Portland has come to an end. A brilliant end! But Calling Shandong "decent" is a severe understatement. That's like somebody saying Andre The Giant was an above average sized human. He was freakin' HUGE, and Shandong is freakin' DELICIOUS! To start things off be aware that by parking in the vastly spacious NECC parking lot next door will most likely get your precious Pinto towed. If there is a wait get comfortable with standing around uncomfortably in the way of the servers carrying hot dishes, and other patrons entering and exiting the hallway to the bathroom. On the bright side, there are 2 awkwardly placed chairs for you to sit on while you wait, but you may have to thumb wrestle someone for the right to sit there. I mean... There are only 2 chairs. But you don't come here for the parking or waiting area. You come here for the food. The pot stickers might have been the best I've ever have, the sizzling rice soup was both entertaining and scrumptious, and the cherry pork was similar to a sweet and sour and sour pork, but was WAY better. I don't know how long this place has been open, but all I can think about is if I can convince my girlfriend to go back there tomorrow night... Wish me luck!

    I've been here 3 times and every time it was amazing. My mom, who's a gourmet chef and pretty picky about food, really enjoyed it. Super fresh ingredients, good meat (I hardly ever eat meat at restaurants, because I was raised eating meat from our farm), not too pricy. Love the tea choices. Great service and ambiance. Haven't had anything from the bar yet, so I can't comment on that. I really love taking people here. :)

    At first glance you roll your eyes and think another Asian inspired restaurant in Portland, do we need another? Yes! I've never tried Chinese cuisine like this, extraordinarily delicious, different, with a unique combination of fusion with an authenticity that maintains the integrity of the flavors and cuisine. Portions will plentifully satisfy any monster eaters, like my husband and me, leaving you slothlike and lugubrious, enough for two or more meals for normies. The shrimp dumplings are delicate and decadent, everything new I try becomes my favorite thing on the menu. The pork belly soup (giant cubes of bacon in a wholesome pork broth and hand pulled noodles!) It'll become you're favorite secret Chinese-way-better-than-"American-Born-Chinese" go to in Portland. Oh, and I really don't want to share this because it's such a wonderful secret, but this place is the bomb for lunch. Free hot and sour soup! Free green tea! Not crowded (yet-sigh . . . )! The best!

    Can't think of a single bad thing to say about Shandong. They messed up my order once, giving me a "dinner" instead of a "lunch" serving, but they made it right on the bill, and I had wonderful leftovers for lunch the next day. This isn't a typical Portland Chinese-American place. Lunch specials are a great value. A huge plate of food for 7 or 8 bucks, to go containers gladly provided. Everything I've ordered has been great. I have actually dreamed about the Hot & Sour Soup that appears instantly as you sit down, and I really like the Shandong Chicken. Fermented black beans, roasted chiles, and a unique sweet and sour vinegar sauce.Yum! My favorite work lunch destination.

    I ordered take out: Potstickers - very greasy, way too big, the dough was extremely thick, there was evidence of freezer burn, and the filling had no flavor. The crab wonton - when we pulled them apart the inner dough was raw, and the filling had an "off" taste. "Dry" fried shrimp - all stuck together with a disgusting gummy coating. Mongolian beef - again very greasy, with an oily flavorless sauce. We paid $40 for a meal that was inedible. We threw it all in the trash.

    Went here for the first time the other day and loved it! The best Chinese food I've had in Portland! Just a note though that they do use MSG, if you are sensitive to it like I am. I called the next day to ask about it when I was feeling funny, and they confirmed that they do, but next time to just ask for them to leave it out and they would be happy to. They said they make each dish to order and that it is very easy to leave the MSG out. So, I highly recommend the food here; it's delicious, but be sure to ask them to leave out the MSG if that's important to you.

    we wanted to try this place for dinner with friends...we began with a tsingdao lager and the rest of the group had a sapporo lager...next we ordered the spring rolls...i had the white prawns with broccoli and ordered brown rice too...my partner had the red curry prawn noodles...our friends had the lemon chicken and sweet/sour pork..they had potstickers too...everything was delicious...our server was exceptional..he was funny too...great place...

    Finally regaining an appetite after a week of sleeping off a terrible virus I Craved Hot-n-Sour Soup! My sister was happy to oblige, and I mentioned to her that I'd heard Shandong was supposed to be really good. She stopped there and brought me a large, pipping hot container of their hot-n-sour. I have to tell ya, it was The Best hot-n-sour soup I've had in this town in years!! YUMMMMM!!!! She also brought a couple of other dishes for me to have handy as I recovered. Everything was delish!! I now have a new favorite Chinese restaurant, right in my own neighborhood! yay!! The hot and sour soup will be a regular purchase, for sure!!! Oh, Hey, I can breathe again....it healed me!!! Hallelujah!!!!!

    The Xiao Long Baos are really good! Can't seem to find this anywhere else in Oregon. I've had them before in NYC, and while i can't say these are better then NYC, i can say they are better then the ones ive had off the dim sum carts over in the powell area. These acutally have a soup cube in the middle that is melted into the meat while it is steamed so its a lot more soupy which is what you want! Also really a big fan currently of the sizzling rice soup. It comes with a ton of veggies, shrimp, chicken, etc. Its light and a good starter appetizer! I am also hooked on the dry friend calamari still as well as the dry friend shrimp! Check those out if you are in!

    Love this place. I've been twice, and the kung pao, and dry-fried chicken are to die for. Dry fried chicken tastes like mandarin chicken. Not orange chicken, mind you; delicious, crispy, spicy, barely sweet savory chicken, wrapped in love and drizzled with heaven sauce. Not huge portions, but enough for 2 healthy meals from 1 dish, or for one super starving person. I did have a couple happy hour appetizers that were pretty plain, and I thought the Tan Tan noodles were pretty nasty really, but other than that, I think this place is delicious if you get the right things and I can't wait to try more. This place has flavor, where so many Chinese places bask in the glow of plain, or just plain bad. It is a risk a restaurant must take to be great, and sometimes it pays off. Also, probably the best service I've ever had, both times the staff really seemed genuinely helpful, chatty and friendly, and to want to know what we thought, as well as being very attentive in a busy place.

    I have been here many many times. It used to be a great place to eat. Now the place is too busy and too crowded to get either a decent meal or a nice experience. Portion sizes (except for noodle dishes) are small. Prices are odd, as many items all cost the same, regardless of what ingredients they contain. If you get seated near the door, good luck, not having the crowd of people waiting bumping into your chair and table. Such a nice experience to have stranger butt cheeks in your face while eating. No thanks.

    Painfully hip little eatery right where NE Broadway collides w/Sandy Blvd... They say it's Northern Chinese fare, but many options, be they rice, noodle or what have you, offer Southern alternatives, which they bill as "healthier" and which I perceived to be "less oil used". We tried several of their "Southern"-style dishes, including of course my old stand by, shrimp fried rice. My group had a smorgasbord from their large menu. Their individually home rolled pot stickers were excellent, as were the Chilean crab Shitake dumplings. They didn't last long, fa' sho! I was not over whelmed by the aforementioned shrimp fried rice, though they offered a brown rice alternative, which I really appreciated, and in any case, that shrimp fried rice did not last long either! Their calamari was heavily breaded w/a very nice stewed medley of veggies. It was tasty, but I still definitely prefer non-breaded calamari... I loved their vegetable trio (brocoli, mushroom and snap beans). The bok choy and mushrooms, however, left me and indeed the whole group, cold. There was plenty of left over of this dish. Same w/the clay pot ma po tofu.... people tried it in tiny samples, but not with much apparent vigor, and evidently no one came back for seconds. The red curry crab noodles (house-made noodles) were excellent-- even the Chinese natives in our group liked this! A nice zesty red sauce, with plentiful meat strewn in the mix. Ni Houw! The lemon pepper prawn were just ok---- they by no means skimped on the prawns, but they were encased in a sort of gelantinous goo. Needless to say, there were leftovers. The Kung Pao prawns, on the other hand, w/the red bell peppers and onions (we ordered ours w/o peanuts) seemingly w/o end, were a huge hit, and vanished quickly. I save the soups for last, b/c that was my personal favorite of the entire Shandong experience. I'm not usually a fan of sweet-and-sour, however theirs was quite good, robust flavor, one order would be a very satisfactory meal all by itself, for many folks! There were several other soup options (no egg drop, strangely enough... maybe it's not associated w/N. China? I have no idea).... The sizzling rice was freakin' fantastic, and instantly vanished! A never ending medley of peas and onions and mushrooms and shrimp---along w/the sizzling rice....wow! Highly recommended. Finally, we also tried their nori-seaweed soup, which I was more than happy to take and finish all by own-self. On the whole, one of the better Chinese places tried in '12. It was much less expensive, but we on the whole liked the food better @ Seres, down on NW Lovejoy....

    One of the best Chinese food places in town. I always get a noodle dish because they make them fresh. Their potstickers are my favorite appetizer. The only thing I don't like at this place is their tea, order something else then thief house tea. They don't serve the average oolong tea like you get at any other Chinese place. My uncle works for the company Shandong buys their vegetables from, and out of the 50 restaurants my uncle deliveries to on a regular basis Shandong is the only place that gets fresh veggies every day, and won't use anything from yesterday's delivery. They do food the way it should be done. And they put sesame seeds in some of their noodle dishes, which I love:)

    This place is amazing. I love it there Beef and Snow Peas is my favorite. There Snow Peas are so fresh they still have crunch too them and they give you a very copious amount of rice which is fabulous. If there was something I had to say I disliked it would have to be there soup, ekkkk me no like. I never eat it which is sad. I think if they had another soup to choose from that came with the lunch order would be nice, but really there food is AMAZING!!!

    I really enjoy Shandong. I do not generally like Chinese food it conjures up ideas of gooey veggies, gooey meat, even gooey soup. I have been here 3 times and ordered different menu items each time-so far the whole menu is a hit! everything is carefully balanced, produce is fresh, nothing is over- or under seasoned. I really appreciate the attention to detail here it will keep me coming back for sure! also worth noting- shandong is much better than lucky strike if anyone is trying to decide between the two

    Interesting and fun take on Chinese. Definitely fresh which was nice and the reason we went. We ended up getting Jan's Noodles, Cherry Pork, Mongolian Beef, and the Hot and Sour Soup. We also sampled a couple of the cocktails. The "refresh" cocktail was excellent and if you are looking for something different and enjoy cilantro, I highly recommend it. The food was good, but nothing too memorable. The best plate of the bunch was the Hot and Sour soup which was piping hot, full of flavor and very hearty. The noodles which everybody seem to rave about were good, but again, nothing overly memorable. Same with the Cherry Pork, although it had wonderful deep coloring. The Mongolian Beef was standard Chinese fare and in this case was a bit bland. None of this would matter much, but the very high reviews on Yelp left me a but underwhelmed. That being said, there are certainly worse places to go for Chinese in the city and I would recommend Shandong as a safe bet. The other disappointment was the tea. Other reviews mentioned the complimentary pot of jasmine tea, but we only received what seemed to be green tea. Had we known we would have simply ordered a pot of jasmine. Not the restaurants fault by any means, but just wanted to clarify what we experienced. The wait staff was good natured and offered great service. The place was also very busy and I am glad we called ahead for a reservation. Overall a solid 3, but I will continue exploring other options before going back.

    Seriously some of the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. We came here after a long birthday weekend to get our grub on and it was just what we needed. The portions were perfect for the price meaning we were able to take home left overs and not break the bank. Some might not think to order the soup when you are starving, but don't skip it. They are all amazing!!! The dumpling were a bit soggy so they fell apart, but we still ate them all up. There were no complaints from our table regarding the taste, quality, or service. Everyone left happy and full.

    I tried this place a number of times as it's in my neighborhood and it seems to be busy often. On several occasions the food was passable but not great. The service, meanwhile was abysmal. On about my 4th visit, I was struck with severe stomach pain an hour after eating here. I was sick for 24 hours, doubled over with gastro-intestinal distress. I was therefore hesitant to return, but did so a few months later when a friend asked me to meet there for a bite. Bad decision! You guessed it - I was again struck with severe stomach pains and hours on the toilet purging, as was my dining companion. I wonder if this place has been inspected by the health department. I definitely will not be eating here again and I am informing my friends and neighbors in the area. I also called the management of the restaurant to inform them of this apparent food-poisoning, but my calls were not returned.

    I liked the food here, but while I was getting settled in Portland, I came in for lunch pretty regularly. I'm pretty easygoing, and a decent tipper. I've never had an issue or a cross word, and I am actually quite polite. So I was really shocked when a waiter, possibly a busboy, started mocking me as I left the restaurant, thanking me repeatedly in a way that exaggerated my personal quirks. A waitress stood next to him laughing. This was in full view of other customers, it was obvious that i was being mocked, and was humiliating in a junior high cafeteria way. I still have no idea what precipitated the incident, but I can't recommend a place that has employees who feel like this is ok.

    I'd heard rave reviews and recommendations from people and various types of advertising media all over Portland. One would imagine that this would impress. It did not. For I find the majority of public opinion abhorrent, upsetting to my pyloric valve, and at times completely out of touch with reality. After browsing their website, I was very reluctant to go there for a meal. It felt as if eating at Shandong were a chore that I never wanted to follow through with. The menu, in terms of the items, appeared rather generic, and the descriptions were unable to convince me that their food was any better or different than what one would expect from just a regular chinese place that can be found practically anywhere else in U.S. The images on their site made every food item look as if it were simply made the wrong way; the fried layers looked too dark and hard, everything seemed to be glistening with oil. I distinctly remember thinking - this is what bad chinese food looks like. The ambiance won me over in a sense. It's not amazing or super trendy, and usually not swarming with people. Shandong passes as both casual and nice. It's a small place and not not un-ironic like 'Lucky Strike'. This is the kind of establishment that must pride itself on its remarkably good theology and geometry. Boethius would likely expect the Gods to approve. It didn't begin to make sense until I'd been there a few times and I started ordering the right things, and before we knew it, my special date and I were crafting our meals specifically how we like them - the right items with lots of their chili sauces. O Fortuna! Hot and Sour Soup The first item to order is the hot and sour soup. I don't want to present myself as if I haven't eaten a lot of chinese food, because I have, but I don't think I've ever had a better hot and sour soup in my life and if I have then I certainly can't remember it now. It's good; a small bowl is enough for two, and I like to put a bit more chili oil in mine and maybe even a chili flake or two, so as only to pique the interest my valve. Important side note - if you are an adventurous soul, you can ask for a side of chili sauces. They give you chili oil, chili flakes, and some cock sauce. Cock sauce as we know, is all well and good, but the chili oil and flakes - that's what I'm talking about. The oils accompany every dish quite well and the spice, in my view, makes even life at the pants factory taste better. Anything with Noodles The noodles at this place are top notch. Authenticity critiques are not helpful here (although there appears to be a few very authentic looking chinese gentlemen in the kitchen - one can not yet discern whether they are actually producing the food or simply there for the allure of advertising). The Udon noodles, Judy's noodles, and so on are all very tasty. The peanut sauce noodles and the gwai wer can be a little overstimulating in terms of flavor, but I hear that people still go for them. Again, add chili oil and flakes in my view. Spicy Dry Fried Calamari This is a dish worthy of my praise. They consistently prepare it very well. The fried layer is moist and yet very crispy. The calamari pieces are quite large and are superbly cooked and nicely evenly so. Also, add some chili oil and flakes if desired. Although, at this point in the meal, too much spice may run the risk of enraging my valve. The service is also very excellent especially when you get to the point of becoming a regular face. Once you are recognized by staff, it can be fun to see them swoon as you exercise your will. No need for a whip, a megaphone, or brow-beating - you will somehow be taken care of as if you were in your own home. Comfort: 9/10 Value: 10/10 Quality: 9/10 Background Music: 10/10

    I had heard good things about this place, and having not found a really good Chinese restaurant in Portland over the last 13 years, I figured I'd give it a shot. Nothing was particularly bad, but nothing was particularly great either. Just kind of average. I think the hot and sour soup had peas in it, which I found kind of strange. Had never seen that before. The eggplant dish was kind of bland, the egg rolls were okay, and we had a spicy chicken dish that was good. Wish I remembered what we had ordered, but it was so unremarkable it didn't register in my longer-term memory. When I have a serious craving for Chinese, I may order from here again, but I'll avoid the egg rolls and make sure to get everything spicy.

    They don't have air conditioning! And they charge too much to not have AC. It is good but not great food. I think I liked it more when it was cold out. The MuShu was fine, but not spectacular. The "generous portion" of mushrooms wasn't very generous. It is adequate. When it isn't hot out.

    This place does actually have really good food, like 4 stars worthy. Why 3 stars you ask? Well I am sure it is due to my lack of knowledge of Northern vs non-Northern Chinese food, but it is not my skewed Americanized version of Chinese food. I mean they do not even have combination plates! I was definitely in the mood for some classic ameri-nese sweet and sour chicken that is so orangey-red that it will stain anything it touches! This is not that kind of place. So I was initially very disappointed. I ordered some spicy noodles with chicken that sorta looked like spaghetti. But they were delicious! I am giving three star because I do not want someone else to be deceived by the high ratings and think they have found a new awesome ameri-nese take out joint. However if you are looking for some food that is tasty and don't have a desperate need for a combination #5 then check it out!

    The food here is really very good, but the service was amazing. Who cares if it's not "authentic," or whatever the other reviewers are complaining about. I wish the menu stated that they can do a vegan version of anything on the menu (which we found out after we had ordered). However, the items we ordered, all tasted wonderful, and the service, again, was extremely helpful and attentive. So I will give them the 5 stars they deserve and I will be back for more... hopefully soon! :)

    We were here a few days ago after attending a wine event at Magnolia's Corner. Luckily my friend called and reserved us a table, or it would have been a long night. It reminded me of Lucky Strike only more polish, less toxic smell of the chilli peppers, and very family friendly. Two-thirds of the tables had children, so be ready for spilled food and noise, lots of it. We ordered two plates of dumplings; pork and crab. The pork was good, the crab was astonishingly delicious. I would have enjoyed eating just crab dumplings if that was my only option. After devouring the dumpling, we ordered tofu clay pot and a few other dishes, including two large bowls of noodles. The owner came out to stir them up for us, which was very touching. Makes you feel welcomed. We eat them all. The only disappointing dish was the tofu clay pot, it is simple to make, but very difficult to get it right. I think they missed the mark on that particular clay pot. It's not in the greatest spot, but it is next to Starbucks. No need to advertise. I would recommend it. If nothing else, you should stop by for some simple noodle dishes.

    Giozo, (a.k.a. Pot stickers) were huge and quite tasty. This place is a must with generous portions and the quality is impressive. 7 PM on a Tuesday night and the place is packed says a lot to their reputation. Too bad it's a business trip otherwise I'll be back next time in town.

    I've eaten at Shandong Restaurant at least 5 times now for lunch, and I love their food! I love noodles so their noodles with black bean sauce is my absolute favorite. Close-in at 2nd place would be their noodles with spicy seafood. I can't remember the exact names of these 2 dishes but you should be able to figure it out from the menu descriptions. I don't love their hot and sour soup (it has peas in it and I hate peas) but it's complimentary with lunch - so I really can't complain. For appetizer, I would recommend the potstickers. Delicious!

    Maybe it's that fact that we live in walking distance of Shandong and don't have to worry about parking, but damn, I really really enjoy the food. The spicy seafood noodles are my favorite- plenty for 2 meals. Judy's Noodles are a bit addictive but tend to be too oily for my taste. And the potsticker are yummy. We've always gotten top notch service there too. Yeah for great Chinese in our neighborhood!

    We were going to try for sushi and the place we wanted to go to was packed, so then I remembered Shandong was just right up the street. We pass by it all the time and it is usually packed and I really wanted to check it out. Luckily, we got there and there was almost no one there. We then figured out the reason why. It is because they open at 4pm on Sunday ( not sure of the hours during the week). This was fine because it was like 10min until 4 and there was only one other family waiting. We all went to sit by the door and a few more cars pulled up. There a little bit of a line, but we were 2nd in line and got right in at 4. We were seated in a booth and quickly got our water and tea. I did notice that the plates had some crusties stuck to them, but they were clean and I am not super picky, so I just got them off myself. :) We ordered a large order of hot and sour soup, the pot sitckers (happy hour size) and an order of the Shandong chicken to share. We got the soup first and it was amazing. It does have peas in it, but It is not that big of a deal. The soup has the perfect flavor and big chunks of chicken and shrimp. I am very happy I found another place that serves really good hot and sour soup. About 10 minutes later, we got our pot stickers and they were okay. They are huge, so that was a plus, but I like my pot stickers a bit thinner, but they were still really good. I would say about 10 minutes later we received our main dish and the portion is perfect for two people to share, or for two meals in one. The chicken was really good and even juicy. A little salty, but it is Chinese food. Another thing that I like about this place is that they offer brown, or white rice. I love brown rice and it is better for you, so I love places that offer both. Our service was really good. We were some of the first people there, so who knows what service is like later in the night after a packed house for hours, but I was asked two times how everything was and my water was re-filled a few times. (without asking). I really liked this place. There was a line when we left of people waiting for tables, so get there before they open to ensure a table right quick and enjoy. It's yummy. :)

    Best Chinese food I've had in Portland. It's always fresh, hot and take out is fast. Their dining room is nice too but tends to get crowded on a weekend night. They don't deliver but definitely worth driving to get it!

    I'm not sure why this place is listed as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Portland, it was terrible! I ordered one of their pots, in which the tofu was uncooked, the sauce had zero flavor and the peas tasted freezer burnt. My husband had one of their chicken dishes, also zero flavor. Maybe we went in on a very off night? But we are not going to second chance it.

    Ok it sounds like whatever horrible white person chinese food my husband ordered was just that. I went in today and had hand pulled noodles. This is the thing to get. I went in just now with 2 other asians. They showed me the light. The seafood noodle is like champong, the classic. The black bean noodle, solid, not AMAZING but DAMN SOLID. I will be back!

    If you have no idea what authentic Chinese food is, particularly that of the ShanDong province, then get in line with all the folks who hype this place for a mediocre experience. If you do like authentic Chinese food, and Portland does have a few choices, then steer clear of here; it's big disappointment! The food was either under seasoned, or over seasoned, in every case; throwing chili peppers galore in a dish doesn't make up for it being bland and poorly cooked. The MaPo Tofu, one of my favorite Chinese dishes, used tofu that tasted like was 3 weeks old, and the sauce was like watered down ketchup that had been stiffened up with excess amounts of cornstartch. The twice baked pork really seemed twice backed; the first time could have been several weeks ago by the taste of it. The only palatable dish was the chili chicken wings, which were far from authentic Chinese chicken wings, but tasted 'okay'. However, I could have gone to BW3 and had better wings for a better price if that's what I had been looking for.

    Our first visit, but my wife was already talking about where to park "next time" by the time we were half way through the appetizer. Great "made to order" spring rolls, and we had the pork belly fried rice and cherry pork. The service was fast and attentive, the food was extremely good and they had a good selection of drinks at reasonable prices. We struggle to find good Chinese food in/around Portland and Vancouver, this goes to near the top for us. The fried rice was fluffy and fresh, not oily, and the only criticism I'd have would be that it's a smallish place and quite loud. Of course that might have been because it's full of happy diners.

    Solid, clean, pretty authentic Chinese food! i'm Chinese from Hong Kong, so I know my Chinese food. let's cut to the chase, it was pretty close. there were some things that had an american flair to them, but all in all it was a great experience and not too expensive. the place was clean, bathrooms also clean, the servers were great, water was never half empty and the food was good. the fried potstickers were the biggest i've ever had in my life. they were a little on the oily side, but very filling. we ordered the Tan Tan noodles and the taste was actually close to authentic, but they added some stuff (peas!) to it that would never see the light of day in Asia. still yummy though. we also ordered Shandong beef, but it was basically Korean bulgogi. while we weren't upset since it tasted so good, but that's def not Shandong beef. so on the whole it's a great place an affordable meal. i would recommend it to any of my non-Asian friends as a great entry point, but if you real Chinese food, go somewhere else.

    I keep wanting this place to be better, but it's just so mediocre. I've tried both takeout and dine-in, without great success. First, options for vegetarians are somewhat limited. For lunch, they automatically bring you a chicken stock-based hot and sour soup. I didn't try it but my boyfriend said he'd give it a C-. Most recently, we had mu shu vegetables. Not bad but a bit bland. Same thing with the Udon vegetables. The vegetables were generous but not enough noodles for the amount of vegetables, and overall, pretty bland. We've also had takeout. The ma po tofu was so horrible we didn't finish it. The texture was horrible. I don't remember what else we ordered but it was similarly just blah.

    Great lunch specials. After Chin's Kitchen went down the tube I was in search of a new chinese restaurant with amazing sweet and sour chicken...I'm super picky and searched high and low. I'd say Shandong is now the best in town. The hot & sour soup is delicious, I highly recommend ordering it as an appetizer with dinner if you have someone to split it with. Sometimes my husband and I will order that with one entree and have more than enough food. Warning....you have to pay for rice. Lame.

    Excellent. My wife is gluten intolerant and many restaurants offer sub-par substitutions that are GF. Not so at Shandong. We ordered the beef shiitake mushroom and Kung pao prawns both GF as well as a plate of asparagus also prepared GF. The shiitake mushrooms and asparagus were sooo fresh. The beef was very tender and the sauce sealed the deal. The prawns were very moist and succulent. The Kung pao sauce was a bit spicy but not overwhelmingly so. We were expecting (and hoping lol) to take home leftovers but it was sooo good we finished it all before we left! The restaurant has a very cozy feel to it and staff for the most part were very friendly and helpful. Only complaints - the time it took our server to come by to take our order, and being brought the wrong dish. The amazing food made up for the delay, and a server came running to our table to correct the mistake before we could begin eating the wrong dish that had gluten in it. So any deductions in stars are certainly made up for. We will be back.

    OMG this place is amazing. The flavors are incredible. My very favorite is the mongolian beef...the sauce is so amazing, I wish I could lick my plate! I've been at least 6 times to this place in the last 6 months, always amazing service, amazing food. I especially appreciate that they make everything to order, I like options. TRY SHANDONG you won't be disappointed!!

    Went for my birthday, invited lots of family- glad I did! Details: The red/curly haired male host who seated us could have at LEAST cracked a smile, or been interested in our presence...? Our waitress was very pleassant, and accomodating to our large group (6) + toddler. We had to do a little waiting to get service, and not everything was on the table (sugar etc for tea, sauces) but that's no big deal. We sat in the back room, and it seemed ike a large number of employees would come to the doorway, observe the room as if they were looking to help, and then turn around- so it was a bit of a challenge to get someone to actually come to the table. Our meal was fantastic!! I am a picky eater, not a professional Chinese-food eater, but I was really impressed!! The chef/owner came to ask us how our meal was- which was a nice touch. If I hadn't been in front of lots of people, I would have told him he has a great restaurant going with wonderful food- but he should consider looking for better employees to serve him the way his delicious restaurant deserves.

    Still not a fan. Again, my review is for takeout. The Hot and Sour soup is neither hot nor sour. It's chicken broth with lots of mushroom. The Kung Pao Chicken lacked any kick. Just bland. I'm sorry. I've given this joint a number of tries and it just fails.

    Great service, pleasant decor. Barely edible food. I don't understand why there are so many good reviews of this place. The noodles I had were served in a boring sauce and had virtually no veggies with them. The pork dish was also at best mediocre. "Chinese" food?? Only if you keep the quotes. Better if you head over to Good Taste Noodle House if you want some rockin' fresh noodles and wonton soup. I've eaten there a dozen times and it's always been great.

    Shandong is what NE Portland has needed for a very long time. First and foremost, this is the Chinese we have all been looking for, but have been left with foul tasting gravy and overly breaded chicken. This is the place with great flavors and great American-Chinese food. Their dry fried dishes are yummy, the soups are delicious. The ginger chicken dish is amazing, as is the curry fried rice! I think the only thing keeping this from being 5 stars for me is the service can be spotty, and parking can be a royal pain. That being said, hands down the best Chinese place in NE Portland.

    Like a good Jewish boy, I first went to Shandong on a crisp Christmas Eve way back in 2010. Predictably, the place was packed with people discussing the movies they had just seen. The phone was ringing off the hook and I swear the hostess had more grey hairs when we left than when we got there. Nonetheless, the staff were all surprisingly calm and friendly and the food was delicious. When it's not the busiest Chinese food day of the year, Shandong is still very friendly and the food's great. The Mongolian Beef is my personal favorite, but it's pretty hard to go wrong when ordering. Shandong is clearly Chinese food for white people, by white people (well, the kitchen staff and at least one waiter is Asian, but otherwise expect to be served by pasty hipsters), but it's delicious, so I'm not complaining.

    Handpulled noodles? Check! Crab curry? Check! Tender, flavorful meats? Amazing appetizers, fresh local veggies and handmade sauces? Check! I'm so sad this restaurant isn't in Los Angeles and it's definitely a tick in the "Pros" column of my "shall we move to Portland?" diagram. A nice selection of Americanized Chinese menu standards as well as some things for more adventurous palates. Good for vegetarians, good for meat eaters, and everything in between. Prices are super reasonable. We had a large party - 6 people - and even with drinks and multiple appetizers plus everyone ordering one entree served up family style, we got out for around $125 bucks (including tip).

    We've been going to this restaurant for a couple of years and were thrilled when it opened up. But I have to say that the food has been spotty lately. I can only assume that they have a new cook or something, but the quality of the food and flavors have definitely changed and not for the better. The good news is that they did expand their footprint and they have another room so getting a table isn't as hard. But I doubt we'll be back anytime soon.

    Ok. 3.5 stars: I'm torn about this place because the restaurant was clean, pretty and the service was excellent but I was disappointed in their xiao long baos (XLB, soup dumplings) or "shao loong bao" as it's written in their menus. I was SO excited to learn that Portland had a place that serves them because I've been dying for XLB here for the longest and I only get to eat it when I go back to the (SF) Bay Area where it's pretty much everywhere. The dumplings just lacked flavor...compared to all the others I've had in the past, it was a little on the bland side, unfortunately. Though they were decently priced at $7 for 8 dumplings (served with red vinegar, not the black vinegar with the ginger slivers), I just wasn't too thrilled about the lack of taste. It was very one-dimensional. However, we had shrimp dumplings which were much better and the hot and sour soup (one of my guilty pleasures) was delightfully sour the way I like it. I am willing to go back because the other items on their menu looked appetizing and I am curious about their dan-dan noodles since it's one of the things I like eating as well, I just hope it isn't bland either.

    This is the best place in town for Chinese. The service is fantastic and the environment is welcoming. Great interior design and atmosphere. Portions tend be large, thus making Happy Hour the time to go if you just want something lite! Not to sure what to order? I would suggest the Pan Pacific Wontons---amazing! Just a side note- Parking is challenging, so be prepared. It may take some extra time to find a spot.

    Beef broccoli was good. Beef chow mien good (even though it was just spaghetti noodles). Even better when combining the two. We didn't finish the lemon chicken. Earlier pics show the nice filet style, and the sauce would have been good on that style, but instead I got the cheap chicken nugget style in a semi-sweet batter and it was just overly sweet. Would have gotten a higher rating if not for that. Might go back again and order it again at dinner. I wounder if I got the "lunch" version of the dish. :/

    My husband and I love to go in during happy hour. I highly recommend the shrimp dumplings, and pot stickers! He always gets the pork belly fried rice. If he could he would eat it everyday. The staff is very attentive, Shandong a wonderful place to visit! The only downfall is the restaurant doesn't have a parking lot. So we park at the Key Bank across the street.

    I highly doubt that the chefs / owners have even been to province of Shandong. The food here is nowhere close to Shandong food. Prices were high (over 11 dollars for a bowl of noodle) and the quality was pretty bad. We had the northern fried rice which was really bad. The rice was soggy and you can tell that they used frozen mixed vegetable which explains why it was so soggy. I could've made way better fried rice at home. We also had the pork belly noodle soup which had lots of meat but the soup base was just like salty water. The noodle lacked the chew that you would expect from a good handmade noodle. We also had Xiao long bao which was pretty doughy... We had a few other dishes and they were really greasy and lacked depth. I will definitely not return.

    Let me start off by saying that their customer service is A 1!! I can always appreciate when employees love their job and represent the company well. With that being said, the food was just alright. We ordered multiple things from the menu and my favorite was my boyfriend's snow peas and chicken. It was really fresh and I wish I would've ordered it myself. The pot stickers were hand made and the taste was good, but they were huge and with the first bite they sort of fell apart. The spring rolls lacked flavor and I wouldn't order them again. And the wings were just okay... My glass bottled root beer was so refreshing though. I wouldn't rush coming back, but whenever we do I'll definitely order a entree and no appetizers. Happy Yelping...

    Come here for the noodles. There are other items on the menu but the noodles are the star. Hand pulled and six feet long in every bowl. Judy's noodles are my favorite. The only complaint I have is that they can be heavy handed on the sauce in each dish. The prices may seem a little high but this is by design as everything is served at family style portions. Even the lunch portions usually mean you will have another meal. I don't usually comment on parking but beware the lot surrounding the restaurant is monitored heavily as it belongs to the Community Center across the street.

    Staff was extremely unprofessional . Stiffed our table on wine pours, swore without discretion during loud waiter banters feet from our table, and literally forgot my order even though the waitress came back twice to confirm it. Food wasn't that great either. Don't come here.

    This is our go-to Chinese place here in Portland. It is perhaps Americanized Chinese food but we like it. We have a set order of potstickers, the Shandong beef with added broccoli or bok choy, and a rotating 3rd dish that we go with on most visits (a recent like has been their sauteed eggplant dish). Deviating from this set menu has yielded sometimes mixed results so we stick with these basics. We've both eaten in (good service, free hot tea provided) and gotten takeout (well packaged, lots of extra sauces and utensils).

    We've ordered take out now twice. The first time we were not thrilled, but based on the reviews we thought we'd give them another shot. This time was equally disappointing. Nothing had ANY flavor. The spring rolls tasted like nothing but old oil, and the other two items were just as bland. In addition, they got our order wrong --- paid for brown rice and got white, and no sauce for the spring rolls so they were basically inedible. I'm not sure if the food & service is MUCH better if you eat there, but not worth the risk. Done ----

    It's always important to have a few trusty stalwarts. Restaurants that everyone can agree on. A place to go when you can't be bothered to cook, but also can't be bothered to put proper pants on and go "out" out. And I have found the spot my heart (read: stomach) longs for in Shandong. Enormous take away portions, friendly staff, a customizable menu, and some seriously delicious hot and sour soup. If I'm not making my way to one of the cart pods, this is easily my favorite takeaway in Portland. Skip the chow mein and the tan tan noodles, don't miss the curry fried rice and any of the dumplings.

    I've been back a few times recently and am happy to report that Shandong has really upped their game with some new vegan menu items, including the addition of soy curls to their menu (which is out of date online). The pan fried soy curl potstickers are delicious, though they should really be served with some kind of dipping sauce (ours were not and soy sauce was kind of lacking). All of the vegan Asian places in Portland that served mu shu have closed in the last couple years, but I finally found a replacement. Shandong's mu shu can be veganized by omitting the egg and adding tofu. It was good. I want to try it with soy curls sometime too. The broccoli tofu is a favorite entree. I just wish you didn't have to pay extra for rice. I always ask for no added MSG, because there is just no need for that in food. I wish Shandong would just ride the NO MSG wave. It would save a lot of people from getting headaches and GI upset after their meals. But I digress... One time when I went recently, our service was awful. We waited probably close to an hour for our food because of poor communication between the two people serving us. It turned out that our order was never put in. The server was apologetic once he realized his error and comped our appetizer and rice and brought us some free iced teas. Shandong is definitely the best Chinese restaurant in town for solid vegan options.

    We went in a group of 4 (3 meat eaters and a vegan) We got there and the parking is ON THE STREET. Do not park in the parking lots, we saw more than 1 car get towed that night. There is no "waiting area". There were about 7 people crowded by the front door. We opted to go to the bar and have a cocktail while we waited for our table. There were 5 chairs at the bar. The girls got the Dragon Kiss. Pineapple juice with a chili vodka. Really good! Sweet with a kick.Our waiter at the bar was really friendly! They seated us fairly quickly (there was a situation with a group of 8 that decided to split up their group into 2 with 1 bill..really people?!) While we were at the bar we had decided what to order so, we placed our orders right away: Apps: fried tofu, spinach potstickers and pork potstickers Our vegan friend loved her apps. The pork potstickers were good. I think they make their own wraps. My issue was it was really a lot of wrap. Nothing negative, nothing positive. Better than frozen, but I've had better. Won-ton and mushroom soup Broth was quite good. The mushrooms were dehydrated, they had a bit of a chewiness to them.Won-tons were average. Our food arrived...I ordered the Tan-Tan noodles. The peanut sauce was quite good.The noodles are hand made. There was just soooo much! I am getting 2 leftover meals out of my bowl. Maybe if they gave 1/2 the servings and cut the price by $5? My guy got the Red Curry Prawns. It had a good spice, not very many prawns, again, a bowl of noodles for a football player in training. I think if we go back, we will definitely split a bowl and pass on the apps, or try the spring rolls. Though, the rude clientele may prevent me from going back.

    Chinese food options in Portland are definitely not as good as what I'm used to back in Chicago, so we were excited to find this place. Vegetarians - they can sub tofu for any meat dish in their lunch offerings! I ordered the lunch sesame tofu which came to $7.75. It was fantastic. The perfect balance of sweet and gingery and spicy. The included hot and sour soup had the right flavor but was a bit lumpy. Their complimentary tea was way better than what one usually gets - a delicious loose leaf tea. I loved the ambiance of the place, and we received super friendly service from Kelsey. We'll be back for sure!

    So then...I've been to Shandong 5 times in the last few months and it is always been a good experience, flavor wise, service wise, price wise, portion wise and other wise wise. Recently went for lunch with a friend. We ordered potstickers (HOOJ), large Hot & Sour soup (also HOOJ w/ lots of chicken & a few good sized shrimp), Tan Tan Noodle (again HOOJ) and Mongolian beef. Food came out quickly, was very flavorful and for me, someone who has never been to China but has eaten plenty of "Chinese" food from Iowa to Chinatown, NYC I can honestly say it is some of the best I've ever had. I've read some other reviews that have bitched about the prices...well all I can say is the above bill came to $34 and had enough leftovers for two whole meals so me thinks you complainers just like to complain and yea, at dinner they charge for rice. It's the 21st century and stuff cost money. You want endless rice, bread, soda then go to a buffet or a chain.

    This is THE BEST Chinese I've ever had. The quality was excellent! Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. This is what places like PF Chang's should be like! Based on someone's Yelp Tip, we had the vegetarian pot stickers, which were stuffed very full and were just awesome! We had Moo Shu tofu and Sweet & Sour tofu, both of which were made with fried tofu and were very yummy!

    This is a great Chinese restaurant if you're looking to stay in inner Portland. Always super busy and crowded so be prepared for a wait. The fried rice is delicious and their tea is so so so good, not bitter at all! We tried both the cherry pork and the cherry chicken; they were pretty good but not the best I've ever had. Their hot n sour soup was unique, very peppery and fresh. Service was sub par but that could have been just because everyone seemed so stressed due to how many customers there were. It was so loud I couldn't speak to my dining companions. They should get a second location. I recommend coming on an off-time, like mid-afternoon on a weekday.

    Delicious! We came here based on some of the reviews we saw and also because it is in the neighborhood. The potstickers are fantastic. Well cooked and really stuffed. The shrimp dumplings were everything that the reviews stated - delicious! We came with the baby in a stroller and the ambiance is great for grown ups, but not really suited for babies, although the staff were courteous and made room for us. We had the pork belly fried rice and the sweet and four chicken - both of which I would recommend. Try this place out! It's good!

    This is a favorite of my husband and I. We have had many things off the menu and all of it has been fantastic! I think a go to favorite is the Shandong Beef. Delicious! One important note: they do not have parking so park on the street! The parking lot behind the building is not available to Shandong customers and you will get towed.

    I come here every time I am in town. just fabulous and yummy. usually we bring about 6 of us and get a big table and all share the fabulousness. the portions are huge, the price is fine, and there's some heat up in this place. you like hot? you get hot. I am hearing there is another location that this place has ties to, and we will be back in town in a week, and surely will be checking it out as well. MUCH love to your service, food, and attitude and relaxing atmosphere. make sure you try signature drinks too when your here. they don't disappoint.

    First visit to this place. I'm not sure what I expected based on the unassuming look of the outside of the building. But inside is beautifully designed. The menu is perfectly laid out. I don't know if this applies to dinner as I went during the lunch hour but we received a pot of free tea and a bowl of hot and sour soup (which is not particularly spicy but is LOADED with pepper. It was very good and I normally can't do spicy foods). I ordered the lemon chicken which was delicious. The pieces were almost too big to eat in one bite but it was expertly fried and the sauce was on point. Rice is included with most dishes and they have brown rice and vegan dishes available. Fortune cookies and orange wedges were provided at the end and were a nice touch. It was a little too warm during the time we went but not intolerable. Overall a great place to eat. I will definitely be going back!

    Flies, flies, flies everywhere! It may have been because we were seated by the window and not sitting in the center but this place has some serious fly issues. It made my dining experience dissatisfying. Small restaurant with an even smaller parking lot. I parked on the streets. The servers were nice. Happy hour is from 4-6pm daily. I ordered... 1. Xiao long bao - happy hour comes with four soup dumplings for $4. This may be the only place I Portland that has soup dumplings but I'm not sure. Glad that it contained soup, however, it did taste a little bland and it wasn't served with diced ginger like it's suppose to be. 2. Dry spicy chicken wings - another happy hour item that comes with 5 wings and drums for $4. The name is misleading.. It's actually pretty saucy and not dry. It is a bit spicy for my tongue and has the sauce has a tangy flavor to it. 3. Shandong beef - tastes like they cooked it in sweet soy sauce and places it over diced cabbage. For the most part I'm glad it was sweet tasting 4. Clay pot mapo tofu - a little confused at first when they brought it because it came in one of those Korean stone pots - the ones they put the sundubu in. This one was spicy in that I needed to eat it with rice to even it out. The tofu is served w peas and mushrooms. It's not bad, but I'll just say it looks better than it tastes. 5. White prawns - served with broccoli. I think this entree out of all that was ordered was my favorite. It had the appropriate amount of saltiness. I'd recommend getting this dish if you've decided to eat here Overall, an alright experience I guess. Would've been a little less upsetting if flies were attacking me and my food.

    Checked out a newer (to us) establishment that serves #tasty northern-style #chinese cuisine packed with lots of flavor. The xiao long bao (soup #dumplings) on their menu were actually what brought us there. Freshly made and delicious. Only thing I would critique is that the red vinegar sauce that accompanied the dumplings was a little bland, so we requested hot oil #pepper and added some splashes of soy sauce to make it our own. Much better. Their mongolian beef was also amazing! We'll definitely be back!

    Loud families with 2+ kids per table eating chili oil doused sub-par "chinese" food. The place is located on a really difficult to navigate corner on/near Broadway. They also have a full bar. I remember my drink being sugary, weak, and not cheap. Unless you are treating your daughter's soccer team to dinner, don't go here. Even then, actually, don't go here.

    First of all, there is hard to find a Chinses restaurant focus on Northern China. Second, this is the first restaurant I have ever seen a bottle of vinegar on the table. I love this place. Pot Stickers are so great!!! If you are not so hungry, noodles can serve two people. Cherry pork is not too sweet or too salty, I love it.

    Vegan potstickers? I'll take 10! These are delicious hand-made stickers of joy with even fresh soycurls to boot. We especially enjoyed the hot green tea they brought to the table as well as the soycurl and broccoli dish. Service is very attentive as well! We are planning an outing soon for a party of 20 to show some friends this spot and share the great food. This is a great casual spot for a weekday dinner!

    We stopped in today for a late lunch about 1:30, there were only about six other folks eating. You cannot park anywhere except their tiny parking lot or the street, the huge parking lot surrounding them is reserved (however it was all but empty so that makes little sense to me). They started us with Hot and Sour Soup, it was OK but I have certainly had better at many places, it had a great deal of black pepper in it and was neither hot nor sour. I have eaten a ton of Hot and Sour Soup and this is a 2 out of 5 if that. We ordered the Pot Stickers, they were very tasty, crispy and filled with delicious pork. They mix the dipping sauce in front of you, big deal, the dude spilled it all over the table. Not impressed with that. I ordered Shandong Beef and it was a bit salty for my taste, the first few bites were good, but I am salt sensitive and I could not finish it. It is kind of sweet and salty. The rice was excellent I have to say, Hubby ordered the Kung Pao Chicken, it is his "thing", he thought theirs was pretty darn good. We have been looking for Kung Pao nirvana for quite some time and still have not found it, but theirs is close. He asked for spicy and they served a plate of the toasted dried chili peppers with it. Hubby ate about 5 of the suckers in a row, so I thought I would eat one. I saw stars, nearly fainted, and about wrecked myself. I really don't remember anything after that. Overall it was good, whomever said the portion sizes were HUGE obviously has not been there for lunch. I thought the portion size was pretty dang small, not enough for leftovers and we are both light eaters (we did take half the potstickers home for later consumption). The Waitstaff were having a great time playing a guessing game with each other and setting up for Dinner as we finished our meal and paid. Not all that professional although they did take good care of us while we were there. **One note we fought with a fly our entire meal, it would NOT leave us alone**

    This is my runner up for tasty Chinese food. They offer a few things that #1 doesn't offer and that makes me happy. I love having too many decisions as opposed to too few. We were sat right away and in good time because soon after, the place was packed with a counter full of take out orders. I ended up with the Soup dumplings and the garlic asparagus (because what was I going to do? Not order GARLIC ASPARAGUS? Gimme a break.) Hubbs had the Sweet and Sour chicken. The asparagus was definitely too salty. Fabulously garlicky, very salty. Used the leftovers the next day and let them season the other veggies that I added and didn't need to season at all. The soup dumplings were also salty. Tasty, but salty and in this hot summer weather, salt is my enemy but I am hard pressed to turn down dumplings. And soup dumplings, at that (hardly anyone offers them!) probably won't order them again, though because the Pacific Rim Wontons were where it's at. Best I've had in ages. I don't usually do Sweet and Sour chicken, but this was crisp and tasty. He opted to add veggies, which was a good choice as none were included. Our waiter was a bit wacky. Very nice and attentive, did not recommend the shrimp dish we were asking about only to find later that he hadn't tried it... Things came out in the order that they were done, everything was of very good quality and reasonably priced. Parking was an issue, maybe take out next time. Definitely a next time, can't wait to try some of the other offerings; pork belly fried rice? Crab Curry noodles??! Spicy tomato Prawns?

    Best Chinese food I've ever had in my life. The garlic green beans were crunchy and fresh, the sesame chicken tasted like real chicken. The sauce was delicious. Chow mein noodles tasted fresh. Pot stickers were big and the filling was juicy and tender. Delicious! I have no idea how authentic the food is, but it tastes like the classic dishes I already know, but way better than I've ever experienced. Such a surprise! Also, the service was excellent. Our waitress forgot to bring a beer to the table and brought it half way through our meal. They comped it without saying anything. I'll definitely be coming back.

    This is a difficult one. The hot and sour soup was excellent. My husband enjoyed his cherry pork but my Mongolian beef was just salty and bland. The food did come out very fast but perhaps they were just well prepared since our arrival was close to their evening service. Our servers were mostly helpful but the person who sat us seemed distracted and it's a pet peeve of mine when they just drop bowls and spoons on the table and expect the customers to arrange our own cutlery and dishes. The pot stickers are huge but not a lot of flavor, just a big ball of pork inside a dumpling. The dumpling itself was cooked very well. The restaurant was clean and filled up fast and I will go back and give it another try,certainly for the soup. The Mongolian beef? Not so much. Portland needs more great Chinese food, if these guys can straighten out their inconsistencies they'll be set. My advice: Arrive early and watch where you park. The cocktails are well made and generous.

    Every item I have had from here is bland and flavorless. I am not even sure how you can make Sweet and Sour pork flavorless, but it was. My housemate loves the place, but he admits the food is really bland and likes bland food. It works for him, but not for me. It is a shame because I live really close, but I will bus it to get better Chinese food. I would give it 1 star, but my housemate really loves and that accounts for something. Also, not fan of the price to taste ratio.

    The first 8 times we ate here, we couldn't get enough Shandong. The nori seaweed soup, the rock crab bao, the cherry pork, the crispy ginger chicken, the chicken and snow peas, the Mongolian beef....soooo freaking good and it was consistent. It was quieter then, fewer Portlandians had clued into how good this place was. Over the years we've been coming here, it's definitely declined. They took the crab bao and the crispy ginger chicken off of the menu, and most recently, they entirely changed the recipe for the cherry pork. The only things left on the menu recognizable from when it first started is the soup and the chicken and snow peas. Luckily, those are still yummy enough to keep us coming back, but sadly, we're anticipating those slip off into some lost oblivion of what used to be. I'm sad about Shandong's decline, but they've had a good run, and it's still one of the better Americanized Chinese offerings in Portland.

    Decided to try this restaurant after searching around. Walked in to place an order for pickup, was greeted right away, fast with the takeout, and overall good food. I'm giving it 3 stars because once I got home and bit into a pot sticker, the meat was pink inside as tho it wasn't cooked all the way.

    Forget gelatinous cornstarch sauces which many Chinese restaurants favor- this place does FLAVOR. Try the dried sautéed asparagus with garlic and ginger. The sesame tofu or cherry tofu were both creative and good. Szechwan food should have some fire and the eggplant did, in a good way. ( you can also order it less spicy ) Food can be prepared vegetarian or made their normal way with chicken broth or oyster sauce.

    I have worked within blocks of this jewel of restaurant.... Fresh vegatables, hand treated meats and crazy noodle options.... but I came tonight for the the Mu Shu Pork with homemade pancakes. Simply divine A collection of Portland eccentric guest, and servers. Great energy was in the air. I would not have had it any other way.

    In my second visit here, I stopped for lunch with the intention of getting the Red Curry Crab Noodles, but they were on the dinner menu and I didn't feel like paying $13.00 for lunch. I have heard they are a must try and will try them during the dinner hour at some point. I'm sure the rest of you Yelpers have the same problem I do, in the fact that we go to so may restaurants and they are usually above average, as we use research from fellow Yelpers findings. This makes going to a restaurant multiple times hard as we can never try them all, thou many of us try to. This visit I had Mongolian Beef, which is one of my favorite go to's with Chinese food. It was excellent. The key is the very soft and tender beef that they achieve here vs. the rubbery stuff we find at other places. I also noticed this time is that are Zagat rated in 2014. Pretty good rating too. The service here is also spot on with things as water being refilled without asking and checking back on the food after it has been delivered. One of the better Chinese places in town.

    This is a good neighborhood restaurant, but there is extremely limited parking. It has generally good food, but the biggest problem with this restaurant is consistency. I've ordered several items multiple times and each time it's a completely different dish, which is not always a good thing. It definitely makes ordering difficult. The staff is incredibly accommodating, offering to change or correct dishes that are unsatisfactory. They have a decent wine list which is nice, and a good happy hour.

    This is in my top 3 favorite Chinese places in the country, not including specifically dim sum places. Cause dumplings are their own [superior] category. It's always nice to find good food that's not coming out of a truck in Portland.

    I really like this place! The food was really good and the atmosphere vibrant and modern. We had pot stickers, dry fried chicken and shandong beef. I liked the chicken best but it was all good. I had lost faith in chinese restaurants before coming here. Will definitely return.

    Came in at 4PM, they have a break from 2:30pm - 4PM. You would think that during that time, the staff are busy tidying up the place and shining the utensils for the dinner rush but you'd be dead wrong. I came here with a friend as we had to pick up my cell phone from a nearby repair shop. We got here at 3:30pm so we had to wait a bit for them to open. They have a tiny 5 car parking lot and it is filled with all the staff's cars. There is another larger parking lot attached to the restaurant but it doesn't belong to them and they have signs posted to make sure you know that. So fine, you have a tiny lot, but why would you have all your staff park there and have a sign on your front door asking patrons to park on the street or across the street at the Key Bank parking lot? Why should the customers have to be inconvenienced? We went in and the waitress was cool. But as I said, the place is full of neglect. It is a tiny place with a full bar on one side and maybe 8-10 tables with booths along the wall. They had black cloth napkins that were full of lint and dust. The table had some crumbs on them and the booth was old and ripping apart with some sticky residue on them. I also had to have a plate replaced because it had some brown stains on it. The food was actually pretty good. So good that the many flys that patrol the airspace of this establishment would linger and occasional peck our food. This may be one of the perks of this restaurant because I may have lost 50 calories from waving them away. I actually got to talk to one of the Chinese chefs and he told me in Cantonese that this place doesn't serve authentic northern Chinese cuisine but I didn't care too much, just as long as it is good food. The menu is greasy by the way so make sure to go to the single stall bathroom to wash your hands after you order but there may not be any soap in their soap bottle as I have sadly found out.. The Judy's noodles were pretty good. We also had the shiaolong boa (soup dumplings) that are nice and juicy and didn't pop as you lifted them. The beef dish was decent as well but a very small portion. The fried wontons were just ..meh The staff were just 'chilling' as the total of 2 tables that had customers were eating. The guy behind us had to yell out to get a refill of water.. As we were about to leave, one of the staff that had worked there for only 3 days asked us "how was everything" and normally I would just give the default answer of 'it was good , thank you,' but I just couldn't this time and gave him everything I had mentioned in this review. It's not a bad place, and maybe I'm just less tolerant today because of my lack of sleep but I am plenty observant and I speak the truth. Hopefully when you come, they'd have taken the advice of many yelpers and cleaned up. It really can be a nice place to eat. Thanks for reading : )

    I live a few blocks away so this is my go to Chinese restaurant. Almost everything I've had is good. Shandong beef is delicious! It gets really busy so I suggest getting there a bit early or getting take out!

    Every single thing I've had from here is delicious. Beef and broc (super tender beef) dry sautéed green beans and Brussels sprouts (suuuuuper tasty) sizzling rice soup (this is fun! The rice is actually sizzling when they bring it to the table) bao (soup filled dumplings, do I need to say more? I could eat at least a whole order of these) judy's noodles (um yum!? 3 foot long homemade noodles....) cold sesame noodles (this was a summer special)

    Pretty much the best Chinese restaurant in town! It isn't the greasy kind of Chinese food but rather fresh and light on the oils. The sweet and sour soup (can be made vegan!) is the bomb! So was the tofu mu shu wraps. The owner is also on the premises watching over and is kind and approachable! He told me where I can buy those awesome iron tea pots they use. I like that this place is not pretentious. Just quality food and a clean atmosphere. *Side note: parking lot is not for Shandong customers, you will get towed. You will need to use side streets.

    Their portions are small and noodles were bland. Not the worst food, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. They have poor customer service, the wait for a table can be long, and their menu items are over-priced ($11 for small portion of noodles). It's an over-hyped restaurant and not worth the hassles for the disappointing food.

    My friends and I came to this restaurant once a week after work while we worked in Portland. This is the restaurant where I got my friends addicted to the soup dumplings (xiao long bao)!! We started with 1 basket of the dumplings to just share with me and my husband. Then my friends tried some. We proceeded to order 2 baskets for the table. A few weeks down the road, we were each ordering our own basket!! As soon as we stepped into the restaurant, the staff would recognize us and put 4 baskets of dumplings to steam right away. They do that because the dumplings could take a while to steam. For the 6 weeks we were there, I never failed to order the chicken clay pot curry and white rice as well. It comes sizzling in the slay pot and has generous amount of vegetables and chicken strips. The portion is quite big and full of flavor that it is always enough for me to pack half of it home and have it for lunch the next day. That was 3 years ago when we were there. But I had the opportunity to go there again when we drove from San Francisco to Seattle and dropped by in Portland. The food was just as good and we recognized the waitress! After we started talking, she did remember us ordering 4 baskets of dumplings for the table. I also like that they offer a pot of tea and ice water straight away. My friends and I often reminiscence of the food here. We miss it!

    Party of three had Kung-pao chicken and Mongolian beef, dry cooked green bean and sweet sour soup. Kung-Pao chicken tastes fairly good although the chicken meat is too soft compared to the original style. Clean and neat environment.

    This is probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in all of Portland. We keep coming back here over and over, and each time, we've loved the food and service. We often get the same entrees that I mentioned in my first review, but on the occasions we've gotten crazy and ordered something new (like the Hunan Shredded Pork or the Spicy Dry Fried Chicken), we've loved them too. Still lovin' the pot stickers and the Mongolian Beef too. What I like is that it's clear they use quality ingredients in all their dishes. You can taste the difference! They've added more seating in an area in the back. Since it's just an enclosed porch area, it can be a bit chilly in winter, but they've got heaters overhead which helps a lot. My first review said things were overly spicy, but it must have just been that day, or maybe it was me, because I haven't found it to be too spicy on our other visits. There's lots on the menu left for us to explore - can't wait!

    My absolute favorite restaurant in Hollywood. All of their food is bursting with flavor and is delectable. When I last went I asked if they could sub tofu for beef in their Mongolian beef. The waiter said they will substitute ANY of their meat dishes with tofu to make them vegetarian. NOM NOM NOM. He then asked if I would like rice cooked in chicken broth or water. I have NEVER been to a restaurant where the waitstaff actually cared if I got any animal bits in my food. It seem like Shandong goes out of their way to make their customers happy while being fair to their dietary restrictions. The only thing keeping this place from being perfect is that it's pretty small. I usually prefer small places, but it makes it nearly impossible to get a table on a Friday night. They are awesome at getting tables in and out, however.

    Oh Shandong...How I love thee. Let me count the ways. I grew up in the Seattle area, so I've always been around some great Chinese food. When I moved to Portland I had such a hard time finding the same caliber of delicious Chinese food. Shandong knows what they're doing. The hot and sour soup is a must, if you don't like spicy then the wonton soup is a great choice too. Their housemade noodles are amazing and so taste fresh. This is a great place to go with a group and share a bunch of plates or as a pair too. Servers are always friendly and accommodating, even on the nights when the place is slammed and you're standing around waiting for a table (the wait is worth it). You can also order take-out here which is usually fast as well.

    This review is based off of my most recent trip to Shandong. I go here often, and almost always it is for lunch. I always leave very happy and satisfied. BUT both times I ordered dinner from there, it was very poorly made and not even close to the quality I received during lunch. I understand it is busy, but I am more than happy to wait an extra 5 or 10 mins, especially when I'm ordering pick up. Go for lunch. Not Dinner.

    The holidays are rapidly approaching and yesterday my friend turns to me and says, "Are we doing Christmas at Shandong again this year?" My answer, a categorical NO. Now, I've only been here twice, both times on Christmas Day. The food is good. They charge for rice, which is totally bizarre. The food is pretty inexpensive, so why not just add it into the cost of the meal? I mean, it's gluten free, right? Christmas 2012: we went with another couple for Christmas dinner and had a lovely time. The mu-shu is great, and the pork soup loong bao dumplings are incredible. We were advised that they needed to start the next dinner service when they brought the check, but we were done, so we saved our post dinner chit chat for outside in the rain. Here's why I won't be back. Christmas 2013: We were a party of 6. Me, my husband, the other couple, and my parents who were visiting from out of town. We ordered a lot of food and a couple of bottles of wine for the table. I had a horrible cold, so the hot and sour soup was amazing and just the ticket for me. Our waitress was very nice and gave us excellent service. We were almost finished eating, the wine drinkers still with wine in their glasses and half a bottle on the table, when a man (not our server) comes to my end of the table and says in a very curt manner, "When you made your reservation you were told that there is a 90 minute limit for the table. You're approaching your 90 minutes and the next table is here. I see you still have some wine there, we can pack that up for you to take home, but we need the table for the next service" Well, the other end of the table didn't hear him at all, and I was pretty pissed. We were still eating and hadn't even gotten our check yet!!! I didn't make the reservation, so NO, I did NOT know there was a 90 minute limit to our meal. It's not posted anywhere in the restaurant that there is a 90 minute limit to eat and get out. Our server didn't say anything about it when we sat down. To make matters even more professional, they had the people who were waiting for our table standing about 20 feet away from us. When the server brought the check she even said, "Sorry, the people waiting for this table are totally staring at you." Glaring at us is more accurate. It was obnoxious and completely ruined my evening. So, we boxed our food, paid, put the wine in a paper bag (seriously) and left. And did I mention they charge for rice? This Christmas, we'll start a new tradition somewhere else. I live in Portland, I can get surly attitude at places with better food and more relaxing atmospheres.

    Food is okay. I think it's busy because it's the only Chinese that isn't divey in the area. I will only post low stars if I feel screwed over. Spent 60 bucks on take out. They double ordered one item, and forgot another. Last time, they forgot my pot stickers... Expensive for what it is. Advice-check your order at the counter because they don't. Oh and don't park in the lot next door-you'll get towed.

    I've become a bitter, angry, hungry-for-Chinese-food-person since moving to Portland where mediocrity reigns and even the "good" places offer nothing better than mall food-court fare. Since moving to the west coast if I've wanted Chinese food I've had to go to San Francisco. We became pretty regular customers, coming here before our bowling league on Monday nights. As such, we've had pretty much every server you can imagine, and tried nearly everything on the menu. Without a doubt the most reliable wonton soup in the city, and their soup is only trumped by their Pork Soup Shao Loong Bao - which is basically soup inside a wonton. Mind blown. We've been known to order two orders - and then a smaller rice or noodle dish and call it dinner for the two of us. Order the Shao Loong Bao, puncture with your chopstick to cool it off, and pour in some vinegar. Yum. Funny enough, they're supposed to be famous for their cherry pork - but I found it average and disappointing, and more like a so-so sweet and sour than anything resembling cherry. We've had everything from their clay pot curry chicken to their noodles, and always leave satisfied, and the left overs never last more than a few hours in the fridge. We've always been treated well by the staff, and come here often enough that I can say safely they are consistent in their service, presentation, and flavor. When I want Chinese in Portland, this is where I come, period. It's not Chinatown in Boston or NY, it's not SF blow your mind, but it's without a doubt the best Portland has to offer and a very, very solid 4+ stars.

    This is the best Chinese food ever. The noodles are made in house and they have friendly and efficient customer service. I had the cherry pork and the sauce was exquisite. I don't care for battered meats, so I will probably not order it again. The menu is elaborate with a good variety.

    We had a good dinner here. They made a server mistake and corrected it quickly with no excuses. Well done. This is Chinese with a twist. We had the "famous" cherry chicken. It is very good, but I am not sure how authentic it is. Great flavor. I preferred the sesame beef; it has a dark sauce that goes well with the sesame. It is labeled as hot; not. The best dish was the beans, stir fried with a flavorful spice. What I appreciate about this place is each dish does taste different and unique. It is close and priced fairly. The service is good and the staff is friendly. We will be back. Try it. It

    I love Chinese food, and Portland has so little good Chinese it's ridiculous. We are very happy to have found Shandong. It's consistently good. Their hot and sour soup is spicy and delicious. Their steamed dumplings are great, especially if you figure out how to concoct a good sauce (I like 2 parts soy, 2 parts vinegar, 1 part hot oil, husband likes equal parts of each). The entrees are a little hit and miss. We've had some awesome ones and some ok ones. Today we had the Shandong shrimp. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, but the sweet tomato sauce was weird. I wouldn't order it again. We also got the dry cooked green beans which were garlicky and awesome! The service is great and attentive. They filled my water glass several times. You are taken care of by several different people so it feels like somebody is always there. Be prepared for a wait. It's a small place and the word is out. We're glad to have good Chinese around!

    My meal should've been called the Tour de Yelp because I ordered whatever got positive reviews. We started with the dumplings which had great shrimp flavor and paired well with the sauce (soy sauce, chili oil, and vinegar) made by the waitress. My only criticism is that the dumpling filler was a bit crumbly and fell apart easily. For the main dish we had the famous Judy's noodles and cherry pork. The noodles were excellent! They were labeled as "fresh made" so I assumed that they would be thick, chewy, and white like those at Frank's Noodle House or Du Kuh Bee's. However, these were more like yakisoba noodles (thin and yellow). If you like sesame seed oil then you'll love these noodles. The cherry pork had the right balance of sweetness, crispiness, and tenderness. We opted for the $1.50 broccoli upgrade to this dish to avoid paying $9 for a standalone veggie side. The sweetness of the pork paired well with the $1 side of white rice.

    The food is amazing. The servers are nice. Atmosphere is clean and melow. My one problem with this restaurant is the short brown haired hotstess. She appears rattled, unprofesional and underqualified to work in a high volume establishmnet. Although her words were nice her attitude is quite the opposite. She was barking orders at the staff, clearly iritated when asked about take-out orders and was argumentative with customers. Again, fabulous food but that hostess should find work more suited to her skill set. If you can overlook the rude hostess the balance of your time will be pleasant.

    I really want to like this place but it definitely went downhill. I go there thinking "I will give them another chance" but I get disappointed every time. My coworkers and myself would go there often almost on a weekly basis. First, my coworkers started complaining about their food not tasting right then I learned what they were talking about. The food simply does not taste right. The chicken does not taste fresh and I tried all of the chicken dishes. I cannot say this for their pork or beef because I never order it but coworkers said those were bad tasting as well. I was a regular but if I were you, I would choose to spend my money elsewhere.

    Okay, I have begrudgingly gone to Shandong for a long time because it is close, and let's face it, the Thai chefs in portland have won the war against the Chinese chefs so I don't have much of a choice. But, last night we dropped $50 on some take out. Three of us were picking around the food and were very nonplussed. Even my Dad, who is not a foodie in the least, was wishing we had gone to Panda Express. (especially since he paid for it!) Here's what we ordered: Hot Sour Soup: This was perhaps the worst offender. It has no hot, and no sour. Instead it is a mildly sweet gelatinous broth with very little taste and large flanks of flavorless chicken. They throw some shrimp in there to make it fancy, but I'll get more in to the shrimp later. Pot Stickers: These were great! They are huge, flavorful, and if they had given us $50 dollars worth, I might not be writing this review. Chow Mein: I didn't eat this myself, so I can't really review it, but my wife ate about 5 bites and I ended up making her a peanut butter and jelly sandwich about an hour later. The "Chow" Mein is in the fridge because we hate wasting food and don't have a dog. But, I have a feeling it's going to be returned to the earth soon. Red Curry Fresh Made Noodles: This was my main dish, and I wanted to put it on some sort of wall of shame (mostly theirs!) This was the most bland tasting mess I have had in a LONG time. They were out of the crab, so they gave me . . . I guess you would call it. . . shrimp. . . if your are generous, but it reminded me of rehydrated backpacking food stuffs from the 90's. The "shrimp" was disgusting, the sauce was bland, the veggies were mushily overcooked, and the noodles - if fresh - looked incredibly machine honed. If you want a red curry fresh noodle dish, go to Frank's Noodle house for a really good version. Sweet Sour Chicken: Can't really comment on this because my Dad got the sauce on the side (and it wasn't my dish) but he didn't like it at all. And, for him to not like something sugary and meaty is really, really, bizarre. Anyway, I would give Shandong two stars because I have gotten average food there before (like Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolian Beef), but the price is ridiculous for the quality of what you get. Shandong has gone down hill over the past couple years, and I'm not sure what is happening. Also, in the past, we have gone when it's busy and it is extremely loud. So, that's cool for some occasions, but just something to keep in mind if you are looking to have a good conversation with somebody about the badly over cooked shrimp you just paid $12.50 for. Any Chinese chefs out there? You can make a mint if you open a good restaurant in NE Portland (or anywhere in Portland for that matter) Until then, this boy only talk Thai. (and some Frank's Noodle house here and there)

    Ordered vegetables with shitake mushrooms and we split spicy eggplant, and my friend ordered shrimp with snow peas and chilli. The food was delicious we both enjoyed our meal. Portions were ok and the flavor of the sauces was very good. Light and spicy. Will return multiple times

    Definitely, definitely a fan of Shandong. This place uses really simple dishes and doesn't seem to weigh everything down with salts and oils. Eating here seems like the "healthy" yet still delicious Chinese alternative. Definitely get the Shandong chicken, and, if you're being health-conscious, add brown rice. The wonton soup is also great, and, like everything else on the menu, the portions are BIG. I also love the little touches about this place, too: tea when you arrive, fast and courteous service, and quick cooking/delivery. 4.5 stars!

    Well, I live right next to Shandong, it's the closest restaurant to my house. There was a time we used to get take out frequently, and it's a good thing we were close. They screw something up on our order EVERY time we get take out. Fortunately for me, we live close so walking down there is not a big deal, but it is annoying when it happens every time! Shandong use to be a solid four star Chinese place. A bit pricier, but the food was worth it. However the food quality has been on the decline while the prices have inched up. They have expanded their dinning area fairly recently, and that might be related in some way to the kitchen problem. I used to smell the Shandong kitchen when I came home and get cravings, but the odors of deliciousness are no longer present. Last night was the last straw. We got take out again. One of the chicken dishes we ordered was poorly cooked pork (the obligatory screw up in the order), and the cherry pork was merely OK, the pork itself was tough, and the breading for the pork was not cooked right and was soggy and greasy. The spring rolls had cooking oil dripping out of them and fell apart while attempting to eat them. The fried rice was the only dish that seemed about the same, but it was never a great dish, just OK. Worst of all is the white rice, which mind you you have to pay an extra dollar for, was inedible. A Chinese restaurant that serves improperly cooked rice is inexcusable. When the fortune cookie is the best part of the meal, you know you are in trouble. All in all, the food they are serving as of now (Summer 2013) is deserving of $7-$8 an entree, not $10-$12 plus a dollar for rice. Shandong has fallen down, and despite the super convenient location for me personally, we will not be back to dine in or to get take out,a s there are too many other great restaurants with better value that are more deserving of my dining dollars. I predict this restaurant will close within the year if they do not get the kitchen straightened out.

    I love this restaurant. The staff is friendly. The food is tasty. The service is the fastest I've ever seen for a sit down restaurant. The servings are generous and quality if ingredients are good. Easily can get two meals out of an order. I always have enough for lunch the next day. Overall excellent experience. The only down side is the parking situation but so far I've always gotten lucky. They need to get the parking lot to the right of their business to share!

    I searched the Internet for the best Chinese restaurant I could find on the east side and decided to go to Shandong. When I walked in I realized the place was small, there were only two waitresses who were white and all the customers were white. I expected to walk into a restaurant that had a Chinese or Asian staff. The only Chinese person I encountered was the man who brought Jasmine tea and soup to my table when I first sat down. The Jasmine tea kettle was nice and the tea cups were the best I have ever seen. The Jasmine tea was the best part of my dining experience because I ordered Tan Tan Noodles which read it was in a peanut sauce, but when my dish arrived I realized the texture was creamy and tasted like peanut butter. The waitress stopped by to ask how was my food and I asked if there is peanut butter in my dish and she said yes. I felt misinformed on my dish because I am not a peanut butter fan + I didn't know official Chinese dishes put peanut butter in their dishes. I thought that was stupid. I sent the dish back and ordered Cherry Pork which was mediocre. Everything there was mediocre. I wasn't impressed except for the jasmine tea. I won't come back to this place. P.S. I don't have anything against white people but when I go to a Mexican restaurant I don't expect everyone to be white because one lesson I learned in life is that white restaurants don't know how to make a margarita; they don't even serve margarita's in a margarita glass so I won't go to a Chinese place that has no Chinese or Asian people in it!!!!!!

    Showed up at 2:15 pm when they close at 2:30 and asked if we could still order lunch. The hostess was very gracious and said that we could. The eggrolls were crunchy and good. We noticed couples at the other tables ordering some noodle dishes that looked interesting and smelled divine. I wanted a light lunch so had the sautéed green beans with rice. They were garlicky and cooked to perfection. I really enjoyed our lunch and would happily return in the future. The food was more authentic then Americanized Chinese cuisine.

    A friend and I decided to go eat dinner here because of the good things we've heard about it. To say the least, I was very disappointed. We ordered the Shrimp fried rice and Kung-pao beef. The fried rice was mushy and the kungpao beef was basically just meat drenched in a salty sauce. I wonder how much salt they add into their dishes as I had a huge headache right after the meal (I didn't even eat that much). The prices were a bit on the high end. I would like to give this place one more chance but not anytime soon.

    I really wanted to like this place because they claim that the food uses fresh ingredients and is made to order. When we walked in it smelled amazing and it's a super cute place, and we got free hot tea and that's always awesome. We ordered take out and got the pacific wontons and potstickers for appetizers, both which were pretty good but came with no sauces. The wontons came with packaged sweet and sour but I would have preferred a fresh small container of it since the establishment has sweet and sour dishes.. And the potstickers didn't come with the usual dipping sauce, which sucks but maybe I'm thinking too along the lines of typical Americanized Chinese restaurants. For our main dishes we got the Mongolian beef and the shiitake mushrooms and chicken, one with brown rice and one with white rice. The brown rice looked cheap and was not good, and the dishes themselves were just alright and pretty salty. I appreciate the fresh approach but it just fell very short for me, and I don't think I'll be trying it again.

    Nice little neighborhood joint - despite being located in that tangle of streets at the Hollywood junction. The noodle wrap on the wontons are thicker than others I've had. Good - just different. Shao loong bao were super tasty nuggets of love. I left with soup splatter all over my shirt (in a good way).

    Great food and equally good service. Definitely not as authentic as some places out on 82nd, but I'd go again. Was a little surprised by the Spicy Dry Fried Chicken, while it was excellent, it wasn't what I was expecting (expecting more of a Chong Qing Chicken, which is served dry and spicy, excellent version at Taste of Sichuan). The version here is basically battered pieces of chicken (e.g. General Tso, Orange or Sweet and Sour) and served in a sweet/spicy sauce. I'll definitely go again, but order something different. Service was outstanding.

    I'm not quite sure what the big deal was here, so I decided to come for lunch one afternoon and ordered the black bean beef noodles. It came in a giant mound where you had to mix yourself, and the payoff? Eh. It definitely had fermented black bean flavor, but it fell flat after that. Where's the spice, the layering of flavor? The beef quality was good, but it didn't really amplify the dish as it should. I definitely had leftovers given the quantity, and it worked okay when warmed up. The noodles were definitely high quality, but they just need to work on their flavors. Sidenote: spotty, but decent service.

    This place WAS bomb in the past but the quality and prices have gotten way worse over the last year. i came here for christmas last year and my party and I all agreed the food was really good and better then most Chinese restaurants. well this year we went on christmas and it was awful. we both ordered the same thing as last year, both were completely different dishes. last year I took note how fresh the chicken was and that it didn't taste like that fake nasty Chinese chicken you normally get in take out spots but now it is the nasty gristly chicken. The prices are also outrageous, i mean $11 for something you would normally pay like 8 dollars for. the most BS of all....have to pay 1$ extra for white rice and 2 bucks extra for brown rice....seriously...WTF This Place sucks Soooo Bad. Avoid at all costs. should be out of business soon with all these terrible complaints pouring in.

    Great food and I used to place to-go orders at least once a week, BUT.... the last 2 times I ordered Kung Pao Prawns (which are delicious, by the way), we were given Shandong Prawns (which are tomatoey and not so delicious). I can't understand the problem - they just keep giving me the wrong food. I'm afraid to place to-go orders anymore - its just too expensive and very disappointing.

    Chinese food, in Portland you say? Why not. This town has a very eclectic feel to it and you can get just about any cuisine you'd like. My brother has been to Shandong a number of times and well, my father loves Chinese so it seemed like a good option. We were hungry after spending a day in the gorge and visiting a small town outside Portland. Shandong is Northern Chinese food, so it's not like you're typical, run-of-the-mill place. Most all of the food has similar names but is prepared differently. Egg Drop soup is Dragon in the Garden soup and besides what you'd expect, it has tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms and big chunks of chicken. And is not neon yellow. We also got some fried potstickers that were large with minced pork and even the kiddo enjoyed those. We got three main dishes as well. Chicken with shiitake mushrooms, Shandong beef and a vegetable trio with broccoli, snow peas and black mushrooms in a white wine garlic sauce. The chicken came in a light brown sauce with garlic and was pretty decent, but the dish that won it for everyone was the beef dish. Slightly charred beef over cabbage in a sweet garlic sauce with a bit of pepper to it. It was topped with some scallions and sesame seeds. The kiddo really liked that meat (I guess it's the Texan in her) The place is really comfortable and our server was really helpful and even though it was busy on a Friday night, we only waited about five minutes. If I lived here, I could easily see going back for more. Great food and I'm full.

    Great food, just don't try to have a conversation. The noise level was unbearable and the service slow. Clattering of dishes from the kitchen, babies crying and tables so close together you feel like you're having dinner with the part next to you makes for a unpleasant dinning experience. Next time I'll get it to go.

    Great food, but weak, small, overpriced drinks. Everywhere else I go two cocktails is more than enough for me. I had to order 3 drinks to even feel a buzz, and the drinks didn't even fill up the glass. I also was never asked if I wanted another drink - I had to flag down the waitress every time. I suggest go to a bar first and then eat at Shandong - or get their take out.

    I really like this place and have to come when I am in Portland. Every dish is fresh and the produce they use is top quality. The soups are really good and at this point I think I have tried every dish on the menu! If you are liking for good Chinese food in Portland this is the place to go!

    SHANDONG! So delicious. The Shandong beef was seriously incredible. Nice rice and very nice tea. I liked the curry chicken as well, and nice generous portions to take home! Oh and I really loved the delicious pork dumplings, which were huge, very flavorful, and clearly homemade. Also, loved how the server mixed the sauce on the table - a nice artisan touch! Definitely will look forward to returning.

    Obviously Shandong isn't a secret here in Portland. 152 previous Yelp reviews can attest to that. My review could have come weeks ago as this was my second visit here, but when I came with a few friends a few weeks ago there was such a long wait that we decided not to stay. This time I came with just one friend and we stayed and we are both glad we did. After only waiting about 15 minutes we ended up getting a seat at the counter. We started out with the Pot Stickers ($6.50 for 6). These are seriously a great deal as they are huge. They are hand rolled (what other body part might someone roll them with?) and stuffed with a ginger-infused mixture of ground pork and Napa cabbage and lightly pan-fried to a golden brown. Wow. I love these Pot Stickers. There is nothing to hate about this unless you hate pork. In that case this dish is probably not for you. Your loss. More for me. For my main dish I had the Sichuan Pork ($9). The portions here are large enough that you can get 2 meals out of them. I should know because I took some home and had it for dinner the next day. The Sichuan Pork is julienned and sauteed with water chestnuts, sliced black mushrooms, and fresh ginger in a spicy garlic sauce. I'm not really sure there is anything more I can say about this dish. It certainly isn't groundbreaking, but it is some mighty fine food. I look forward to coming back. It is nice to know you can find some good Chinese food and not have to drive all the way out to 82nd and beyond to find it. It is a bit more expensive here than the restaurants out around 82nd, but still not wallet busting expensive.

    I have eaten here a couple times as dine-in and a couple times take-out... I am not entirely sure why I continue to come back. I think it is over priced and the servers are hit and miss. I work in the service industry and I know how hard it can be to always be on point, but first impressions count. I would say take out is the way to go, that way you don't have to deal with the servers for as long. I have had the chicken with snow peas, the green beans, pot stickers, and a crispy fried chicken in sauce dish (can't remember which one...) The food is pretty tasty, but I think there are plenty of other Chinese restaurants in town with better food, and better prices. The tables are also kinda wobbly, but the tea is good. It happens to be on the way back from my gym, otherwise I don't think I would go out of my way to eat here...

    Chinese food! Veganizable Chinese food! In my neighborhood! I just discovered this place within the last few weeks, while searching Yelp for a restaurant with vegan options close to the Hollywood Theatre. The only Chinese places with vegan options that I know of in Portland are Green Wok (SOOOOO good, but too far out) and Vegetarian House (centrally located, but wicked greasy and just a tiny Supreme Master creepy), so I am super duper stoked to find this place. The wine list and cocktail menus are carefully crafted (plus, they offer affordable bottles of bubbles, so this girl is naturally happy) and the menu--oh, the menu. Everything except the appetizers are veganizable. And ya'll, the noodles are HOUSEMADE. And served with SCISSORS for cutting. Interactive food, my favorite. I ordered Judy's Noodles: housemade noodles, spinach, fresh jalapeños, shitake mushrooms, garlic and white wine broth, and added fried tofu (though you could add steamed tofu instead, if you like. Weirdo.). They were sooo good. A little oily, but the delighfulness and spiciness made up for that. Recently I came back with my grandma and we tried the dry-fried tofu (she had the chicken), and the service again was on point, the food came out quickly and tastily, and the check total was fairly low. I will come back here again and again (next time I want to try the fried rice!) or until I get bored. But really, you guys, it's awesome Chinese food, affordably-priced, and you can hit up Blackwell's (my new favorite bar) for a drink afterward.

    My wife and I spent the weekend in Portland for a concert. While there, we planned to have dinner with my brothers and family who live in Vancouver but work in Portland. They are in love with this place and I was excited to try it. I can't even tell you what we had (because we ordered every thing from soup, pot stickers, wings, and many entree's) and all were delicious. Obviously, there is some great effort to put these dishes out. My main objection was the service. It seems that most of the servers are young and do not have a whole lot of direction. Dirty plates pilling up, lack of utensils, empty cocktails, etc. Luckily, the food makes up for it.

    We've been here three or four times--it's about a 45-minute round trip from across the river, but it's so worth it. The atmosphere is modern and comfortable, spotlessly clean, with friendly, quick, tipworthy service. We're greeted with a pot of hot tea, and whatever we order arrives promptly and is the perfect temperature, not to mention perfectly fresh, colorful, and delicious. You can taste individual ingredients, but all the flavors still harmonize to create the sensation of tiny Chinese fairies massaging your tongue. If you want to kick it up a notch, try the red pepper oil at your table. Your meal will be topped off with fortune cookies (or "advice cookies," as I like to call them, as I so rarely get an actual fortune) and juicy orange slices. This restaurant is also a good choice for kids--your server will give your wee tykes a set of chopsticks held together with paper and rubber bands, to make it easier for little hands to manipulate. A shame about the parking--there's a huge lot next door to the restaurant that's perpetually empty but apparently owned by the local community center, while Shandong customers have to park on the heavily-trafficked street.

    I think I finally found it! A place that I can actually say Wow. Yes Portland isn't as culturally diversed as other cities but they try to make it up with their own interpretation of cultural foods. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but this place has left me wanting those dang green beans every time. I remember when I first time the sautéed green beans, I could not stop thinking about them. I think it was more memorable than the tender Mongolian Beef or the fried rice (which rice was way overdone). Yes the green beans were even more memorable than the Pan Asian wontons which were still enjoyable. Or could have been that I was terribly hungry after my flight? Well decided to try it again this time ordering different items. The Shandong beef was delightful. The ratio of meat to sauce was evenly balanced, most places give you more sauce than meat. The shredded pork was also enjoyable. Neither were as spicy as they indicated. Chicken wings were crispy and the again they weren't drenched in sauce like other places.The lemon chicken was perfectly cooked as the lemon sauce was not as thick and sweet as other places. The Gwari Wer noodles were interesting because they weren't spicy instead they had more of an Indian curry taste. Sadly on my second visit, the green beans fell short from my previous visit. Maybe I put too much confidence in these suckers. The wait staff was great even though they were getting busy. Overall Shandong is by far one of the better Chinese restaurants I have tried in Portland. I will say that parking can be a pain especially since you park in the lot in which Shandong sits on but parking is inconvenient in Portland. TIP: if you seat in the enclosed patio, make sure you ask for them to turn off the heaters or you'll be working on your Portland tan. I almost like it was a 2 for 1 special - Eat & Tan! Thankfully our waitress turned if off after we sitting in it for a couple mins. I'll be back!

    It pains me to have to write a negative review because I eat here often, but I had a really negative experience at lunch and felt that it wasn't handled properly. I came for lunch with two friends from work, and we roared across the river to the east side for what we thought was going to be a quick and delicious lunch. We placed our order, and after thirty minutes, we realized that we were the only people in the restaurant not eating, so we asked our waitress if our food was ready, to which she replied that she would check on it. We figured she forgot to put in our order, which we get - it happens. She came back around to every other table to check on them and seemed to purposely avoid our table, when all we wanted was an update on our food. I went to the front of the restaurant to let someone else know that we hadn't yet received our food and had been waiting for a half hour. They quickly yet rather dismissively told me they would check on it. Five minutes later our food arrived, with no acknowledgement that we had been forgotten about. Our waitress came over a few minutes later and apologized for forgetting to put our order in because she was new and still learning the ropes. We appreciated her almost-too-late apology for the situation, however, we felt that whoever was in charge could have stepped up and apologized again, or showed some remorse for the lack of service, and the poor service once we did actually receive our food. You have to represent your restaurant, and if your staff can't, then you have to pick up the slack. That's just called good business. We were given a small discount on our bill, but really, if we'd just been given some proper acknowledgement of the poor service, and a sincere apology from someone other than the waitress (i.e. the person who told me he'd check on our food, or the other person who brought our food), that may have sufficed. I understand why these specific people work the lunch shift. Maybe I will stick to my evening dining where I don't seem to have these problems.

    What a refreshing service experience. I have been here twice in the past week, and I have heard the same thing each time, "We all help each other out here. You can ask anyone for anything." Amazing. Water glasses are continuously refilled; a new pot of hot tea, if requested, arrives promptly. It is not always the same server, and no one has the "not my table" attitude. I have certainly experienced this phenomenon at a higher price point in town, but for casual, family-style Chinese, I was not expecting such team work. This level of friendly, can-do service puts Shandong high on my revisit list. You know what else demands revisits? The food. Almost everything has been a hit: pot stickers, crab (with a "C!") and cream cheese puffs, dry fried green beans, Shandong chicken, Manchurian beef, and Judy's delectable, chewy, spicy, amazing noodles. I've only had one miss here, the Tan Tan noodles. They lack the depth and layering of flavor found in the Judy's Noodles. It was kind of peanut buttery mush. I won't slam them for this dish; just know there are better ways to enjoy their house-made, super long noodles. I definitely have my eye on the chicken noodle soup here. I saw two ginormous bowls delivered to a nearby table and I mentally bookmarked that dish for future consumption, especially in the fall and winter weather to come. Location is a bit of a detractor. It is in that Bermuda Triangle where Sandy/Broadway/39th all converge and force you to turn in directions you do not want to go. Some people are never heard from again when they enter this geographic terror zone. Those who can navigate it successfully, however, are rewarded with a great experience at Shandong.

    We had been meaning to try this place for awhile and when we finally did, we found a new regular place for Chinese. We stopped in for lunch and ordered the sweet and sour pork, the cherry pork, and the shandong beef. The sauce on the cherry pork is completely addictive. Absolutely delicious. The shandong beef was delicious and tender. The sweet and sour was average. The minute we sat down we were presented with a teapot and hot and sour soup which was some of the best I have had. The atmosphere is comfortable. Even the music was nice. We left completely stuffed and a very reasonable $26.00 tab. We will be back again and again.

    First time patrons; family of 5. We are thrilled to finally find great, fresh Chinese food on the east side. I had given up hope, not eating Chinese for the last couple months. I really wanted to start my year with Chinese. This was spot on! We ordered a bit of everything: Spring rolls (crisp, light and non-greasy), pan pacific wontons (aka crab puffs) - real crab and lots of it, green onions and the perfect touch of cream cheese. Sesame Beef, White Prawns, green beans, pork fried rice and chicken chow mein. Everything was hot, fresh, well seasoned and simply delicious. We had very few left overs but already ate the little we did bring home. My teenager has declared this to be his new birthday dinner restaurant. The whole family is already talking about what they'll order on the next trip. It was that good. Service was prompt, friendly, empty plates were whisked away immediately. The kids loved the kid-friendly chopsticks, the green tea was good and the place is very clean. Each table was thoroughly sprayed down and cleaned after use. Reason for 4 stars and not 5 - No coffee (an issue for the hubby). It didn't bother me, but it was startling to be told "we don't have coffee." This is the Pacific NW - no coffee at any restaurant is just bizarre. But here was my big peeve; charging for rice. Not extra rice, mind you. As in, you won't get rice with your entrée unless you pay for it. I don't understand the logic of a Chinese restaurant that charges $11+ for an entrée not including rice in that price. Does anyone not want rice with their Chinese food? This should really be corrected. It's a bit expensive, so we won't be able to eat there as much as we'd like, but we'll definitely be back to try out the rest of the great menu!

    Food is pretty good but it's definitely caters to the Non-Chinese crowd. The food is a bit on the expensive side for Chinese and most of the sauces are over powered. Surprisingly, Shanghai dumplings are pretty good here. Expect this place to be pretty busy with Hipsters and Yuppie families.

    I just discovered this place recently and am already a fan! It totally breaks the typical cheap, greasy Chinese restaurant stereotype. Everything we ordered was fresh, authentic, and delicious. I really liked the wonton soup - I've never seen wontons that big before! The interior is clean and nicely decorated, and our server was sweet and friendly. We'll definitely be back!

    We have an awful time when we crave Chinese food on our side if the bridge (Vancouver). Nothing but a couple of mediocre spots we will patronize when desperate. Ventured on this freezing cold night over to Shandong...arrived about 8PM on a Friday night... Tables were starting to clear from the dinner rush, so we were seated right away though they were still all pretty busy, Started with hot and sour soup - delish ! The pot stickers. Some of the best I've had, and loved missing our own sauce for them once instructed... Servers were all delightfully friendly. We had the Gwen Wer (sp?) noodles, sautéed spinach, Kung Pau shrimp, and Shandong beef. Everything was fresh, hot, and perfectly prepared. We'll definitely be back !

    My first experience consisted of trying to call in an order and was left on hold while I could hear everyone talking in the background...in fact I'm still on hold as I'm typing this review! I decided to see how long it would take for someone to answer but after 20 minutes I gave up and called back. Miguel answered the phone and was unapologetic but simply replied, "well whoever answered must have gotten busy." As if I didn't realize he had been the one to leave me on hold. Your food may be good, from what I'm told but I will NEVER go through that again!

    One of the better restaurants in Hollywood District. Why only 4 stars? Well, not a lot of competition, plus the happy hour deals are meh, and the normal dinner entree portions are a tad small. However, most every dish is delish. Standout dishes for me are: Cherry Pork Dry Fried Chicken Shandong Beef The staff is very high turnover. Each of the last 3 visits have had 1 waiter/waitress training someone new. I didn't see this mentioned anywhere, but the Shandong corking fee is a very reasonable $8.

    To tell the truth, my first visit to Shandong left me kinda dry. Thank god I gave it another chance, because it turns out they are fan effing tastic. My first time here I got the Mapo Tofu - being a "northern chinese" restaurant they should be able to cook the hell out of this sichuan staple. It ended up being merely average. It must have been an off night because I have since ordered it and it's as tangy and spicy and delicious. The real standouts here - the ones that give me a food boner - are the Pork Soup Shao Loong Bao. Basically, and I'm about to blow your goddamn mind here, you take wonton soup and turn it inside out. Yes, the soup in INSIDE the delicious dumplings. You get a hot uncomfortable steamy face full of broth made from what can only be rendered pegasus wings. Go. Get you the Shao Loong Bao. You'll love it.

    I liked it! It is exactly the type of Chinese food I have been searching for and craving in Portland! LARGE portions, nice and spicy, super flavorful, and the complimentary green tea after you are seated is a nice touch. We ordered one appetizer, one large soup, and 2 entrees (no drinks) and our total bill was around $40.00 and we had leftovers for lunch the next day! If you like Hot & Sour soup, you must try it here!

    We go here a lot and we love it. There was one time when the Tan Tan sauce tasted like they diluted it with water, but every other time it was spot on. We've lived in a variety of cites and countries, and while this isn't the best Chinese food we've ever eaten, it is the best we've had in Portland ... for what it is! It is greasy Chinese food! The fact that they use fresh ingredients and have unique flavors for greasy Chinese is a bonus! But then again, we didn't walk in here expecting our minds to be blown into tiny over critical pieces.... we just wanted Chinese food. Our favs are the tan tan noodles, spicy dry fried chicken, cherry pork, northern style fried rice, asparagus, Shandong beef, and of course, the hot and sour soup.

    The Chinese food that I have had previously in Portland was not too great. Since it has been several years since I dined at a Chinese restaurant in the area, I decided to see if the scene has improved since then. After reviewing the Yelp reviews, I decided to give Shandong a shot. Shandong is located in the Hollywood neighborhood. It is a short walk away from the Hollywood stop on MAX. The restaurant is located in a building that looks like a house and is unassuming. Though when you walk in, the decor is suprisingly modern and clean. Maybe I should have read the reviews a little more because I noticed there were not many Asians dining here. Just a couple women. The servers were not Asian either. Usually that is a flag, but I let the food speak for itself. They have a good lunch specials menu which comes with white or brown rice and hot & sour soup. Lunch plates are reasonably priced starting at $5.75. You can also order from their regular menu if you feel like getting something different. Though it appears most diners were taking advantage of the cheap eats. Decided to order the spicy garlic eggplant ($5.75) and one order of the Chilean rock crab & shitake shao loong bao ($7 for 6). The shao loong bao aka xiao long bao take 15 minutes to steam, so you need to decide whether the wait is worth it. Although the eggplant is described as spicy, it was really more tarty. I love the color of the Japanese eggplant that they use here. It looks and tasted fresh. The shao loong bao was a bit of an overkill since the eggplant and soup was filling enough. Found the shao loong bao here to be okay. There was not really any soup inside. I had the server put together the dumpling sauce, but I found it to be light on vinegar and it had too much of soy sauce. I will do the mixing next time. While the soup dumplings lacked soup, I did like that the crab was sweet. The service I had here was good and friendly. I do also like the interior of this restaurant because it feels comfortably casual. My visit at Shandong proves that there is good Chinese food in Portland. I won't say that it matches the best of what I can find in Seattle or Vancouver, but the food here is worth a try. Particularly for their cheap eats lunch specials menu.

    I visited this place once before for lunch and decided to try it one more time for dinner. Our family will not go back again. Let me be fair: the waiters very very nice and helpful, loved customer service. Now the bad: 1.the place was clean with nice decor but we were seated in the addition room to the main building with plastic cover over the window instead of glass. It was windy night with usual low 40s and we had to put our jackets over our laps, because we were freezing. 2. It's not an authentic Chinese food! There were not a single Chinese person, and my friend who is Chinese and knows all the places with good authentic food, hasn't heard of it. 3.Now, I understand, not every ethnic restaurant is serving an authentic food but at least it should be prepared to order and taste decent. As other reviewers noted food came out quickly, TOO QUICKLY for made to order food. Barely 7 minutes after waiter took our order we had 5 dishes on our table. Since the portions were 50% smaller compare to Chinese plates in other places, we ordered 2 more dishes. Now, the last two dishes came out IMMEDIATELY, I swear we didn't have time to start eating the first 5 dishes. They serve OLD food. It was not made to order, maybe leftover from the lunch or yesterday. We ordered 5 stir-fries, that supposed to be hot, they were not even warm. When I eat at Taste of Sichuan, I have to wait for food to cool down a little bit, because it is hot and fresh from the wok, I almost burn my lips. Not at Shandong.

    Thanks to Yelpers, we decided to give this a try. Overall we had a solid food experience, albeit didn't feel "authentic" - but I'm not sure I care. There were a good number of vegetarian options available, there is a choice of white OR brown rice, and the food/service is extremely quick and efficient. Parking absolutely sucks. There's a GIANT parking lot that patrons of Shandong cannot use - but it's always completely empty. Apparently if you try to park there, they will tow your car. Ridiculous.

    At first I was worried about a Chinese restaurant named Shangdong with a full force English menu. The result was not all negative. -Hot and Sour Soup was authentic and with the right punch of sourness -Chicken Wings is missing one key flavor that I cannot place -Black Bean Noodle It is all good. The noodle is fresh and again it is missing one key flavor for the traditional black bean noodle. -Curry Fried Rice It is fried rice. Not bad. All in all, the ingredients are all fresh and I will come back again when I am in town. The service is very good.

    I am of Chinese descent. I'm by no means an expert in Chinese cooking, but I've lived in China for a few years. I've eaten my way across China. So, I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I went during the tail end of their lunch service. It seemed like a popular place. The server took us to our table. The service is decent and attentive enough. They had nice tea ware. My sister and I ordered: Spicy Dried Fried Calamari-chewy rubbery squid wrapped with a thick crispy cardboard like coating. The spicy sweet sauce was decent, but the dish was accompanied with a scoop of rice that was half mushy and half hard. My confidence plummeted tremendously after tasting this dish especially when they couldn't even get white rice right. Jiajiang Bean Sauce Noodles- the noodles are suppose to be handmade. This was one of the worse handmade noodles I've had. There was no nice chewy bite to the texture instead it was weak soft limp noodles covered with dark sauce that lacked character. It was topped with some raw cucumbers and stir-fried zucchini. If I remember correctly, the meat is usually small diced pieces, but they had huge slices of beef. I could tell the beef wasn't exactly fresh instead loaded with cornstarch and seasoning to mask the fact. Chilean Rock Crab Shitake Xiaolong Bao - on their site, they state the skin of the dumpling is thin. I would like to counter that. The skin was thick and floury. I understand that we ordered an unconventional type, but the meat inside was tasteless and dry. I could not taste freshness in the crab meat. I felt like I just bit into a large dry ball of blah-ness. Pouring loads of vinegar didn't save it either. I think the zhejiang type of vinegar is probably more suitable for this type of dumplings as well. The complimentary hot and sour soup was edible, but nothing to write home about. I would not return. I rather go to PF Chang's if I wanted overpriced Chinese-American dishes.

    I have been searching for a place that made good...and I mean GOOD potstickers for years now. I have finally found that with Shandong! I tried them out initially with a coupon since they were closeish to my home, I am so very happy I did! Their food is the kind of food that I think about and crave. The kind of food that while I am eating I keep commenting on how good it is. All of the noodle dishes that I have tried have been spot on...I do actually have cravings for the Tan Tan Noodles...and as previously mentioned, the Potstickers are just perfect. I love that they also serve them with soy and white vinegar for dipping. They get pretty busy in the evenings so we mostly get take out, and I can happily say that we have never had an issue with our order being correct. If you love noodles...and potstickers, this is the place to go!

    I was looking for good Chinese food on the east side and went here based off the other reviews. The reviews once again led me to a great place! The cherry pork, lemon chicken and pan pacific won tons were fabulous! Definitely fresh tasting and not oily or gelatinous at all which is quite impressive. The service was good but I think they could use 1 more server or hostess especially on New Year's Eve when most of the patrons were waiting to pick up their to-go orders. It took around 30 minutes to get our food but it was well worth the wait! I will definitely go back.

    Hot damn! This place knows how to cure my cashew chicken craving. I am by no means a judge of authenticity but if you love meat covered in sauces this is your place. So far I have tried several menu items and my favorite entree is the spicy dry fried chicken. It has the perfect amount of heat and still maintains the gooey sweetness my Midwestern palate expects when Chinese food is set in front of me. They have a kickin happy hour menu as well. I must say I am not a huge fan of the specialty cocktails. I cannot recall the name but it tasted like spiked V8 juice. The service is awesome too, I have seen them get hit with a group of 30 soccer players and it didn't affect our service at all.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the spicy dry fried chicken and Pan Pacific wontons. I asked for extra spicy, and its possible i got it, but i'll be asking for 3x spicy next time. Prompt and friendly service on a late take-out. Plenty of napkins and two fortune cookies!

    After all the rave reviews I was really excited to try Shandong but it was a terrible disappointment. When we walked in for lunch there were only three other tables occupied and the waitress rushed us to a table, tossed down menus and ran off. She later explained that all three parties walked in moments before us and that she was trying to get everyone served but it came off rather rude even though she had a forced smile on her face. After perusing the menu I decided on the Ma Po tofu which I chose in large part because of the lovely red chili next to it on the menu. After ordering and minutes before the food arrived the waitress informed me that there were additional vegetarian options for meat dishes but they aren't noted as such on the menu. Well, that's just great, I'm glad that there were other choices I didn't know about. When the food arrived it looked wonderful but that's really the best thing I can say about it. There was almost a total lack of flavor and non-existent spiciness! The sauce had a kind of cornstarchy taste to it and that isn't a flavor that I consider Chinese or even remotely appetizing. Even a little salt would have added tremendously but there was so salt or any other condiment on the table and I couldn't even request it because I think short of physical assault there was no way to get the attention of the server. Ultimately I was completely disappointed. Granted I grew up with great Chinese cooks in the family but this was terrible. I had great hopes that the Portland curse on Chinese restaurants would be broken by this establishment but it is still was this city firmly in its' grip!

    We ordered takeout for five adults and three young children. The food was ready when we picked it up. The food is delicious, not greasy or overly salty. The containers did not appear to be clearly marked so there was confusion about what we received. When we called to tell them we hadn't received all of our order, the owner/manager said he wanted to personally deliver the items to us and asked what we would like for an additional dish at no cost! Amazing customer service! I highly recommend Shandong!

    After reading all the reviews on yelp and I was really excited to try this place. But, it turned out that I wasn't sure if I really like it....... It could be better, or, I could gave it an "okay" with 3 stars, but, I wasn't happy with their service. I went there for lunch and I didn't eat their food? I got an expression that it is a pretty Americanized Chinese restaurant.... and I am not sure how authentic it is. P.F. Chang? Panda Express????? So, I got seated with a nice pot of tea and ice water. I was looking at the menu and they didn't service full menu during their lunch hours (which is fine, because those items must use less time to prepare and it's better have a menu like that for lunch as most people won't get long lunch breaks.) I had about 2 second to look at the menu after I poured myself a cup of tea, and the waiter was like "Are you ready, hon?" "No, I am not ready..." I ordered the Shandong Black Bean Sauce with Noodle... It came in a big bowl. The waiter came and mixed it up for me? Then asked me to cut it with scissors...? Then, I saw him cutting up noodle for the customers across from me... It was a bit awkward seriously.... I have never experienced that in a Chinese restaurant before. The Shandong Black Bean Sauce with Noodle just like the Korean Jajangmyeon. I have had this dish at other restaurants before and they ususally either put vegetable, diced pork and seafood in them, but Shandong put beef in it, and one of the only kind of meat on earth I don't really eat is "beef"... I know it's not their fault.. So, I tried talking to the waiter and find out more on the menu so I could other something else. I asked him about their fried rices and other dishes, but it seemed like he didn't have the patient to talk more about their restaurant, I felt like... and walked away with his heels that was making loud sounds on their wooden floor. I ended up getting my noodle to-go, and didn't get to order another dish to try their food... I was hoping to try their Xiaolongbao and again, they don't have full menu during lunch time.... On their menu, it said that if I need a full description of the dish, I can go visit their website... But, they had the same "menu" on the website that also does not included any description? At the end, I paid for the food and the service, but I still haven't tried their food. I took it home for my sister and she said it was way salty and she didn't want to finish eating it..... I asked and see if she would go have dinner with me sometime in the future to try out their xiaolongbao, but she refused to............................ Hopefully, I will go back sometime soon and actually taste their food to write my update review on this restaurant. The decoration inside the restaurant look very nice. The food portion is okay.... But, I've experienced better.

    I just got take out from here and I only ordered the red curry crab noodles because all the reviews said the noodles are amazing because they are made fresh. The noodles are awesome, but the curry crab sauce wasn't very good. Its bland, and not spicy at all. When something says its going to be spicy, I don't expect to have to dump sriracha on it to give it heat. I will probably keep the noodles and toss the sauce because I really hate wasting money on food. I was really excited to try this place, and I probably just got the wrong thing, but who knows if I will ever go back now. :/ I hate writing bad reviews, but I am really disappointed.

    I think I would like to make this place a regular stop in Portland(ia?) when I come visit my buddies. Shandong! Shandong! was all we kept chanting before and after visiting this joint Saturday after B-Roy came up big in the game. The NRN crew went in knowing this placed served some mean Northern Chinese cuisine. We ordered some Tsingtao 22's, Pork Soup Dumplings, Spicy Garlic Eggplant, Cherry Pork, Shandong Style Fish and Clay Pot Ma Po Tofu. This is one of the best meals in recent memory that I have had. I guess when you roll with the No-Rubbuhz to an establishment with food like that it is hard not to have a good time. The Ma Po Tofu has to be one of my all time Tofu dishes. I loved, loved, loved the Eggplant. The Fish dish was quite good but the fish went faster than I thought it would. Also, eating such a large fish eye while drinking felt like was a horrible idea at the time but I quickly did an about face as the rest of the night turned out to be quite fun. I guess my only gripes about this place were the drinks. I thought they were a bit overpriced and it would have been nice to have a well but it was not exactly something that would detract from the overall ambiance and experience of this place. It might actually be better to not have a bunch of the No-Rubbuhz crew liquored up. Hopefully on my next visit I will find the time to snag some more delicious dishes at Shandong. I highly recommend checking this place out to anyone.

    Similar menu to other Chinese restaurants, but really fresh and flavorful ingredients. The sesame beef was tender, but also had some crunch. Really good. Clay pot curry chicken was great. The pork fried rice had big chunks of pork belly. The crab wontons had great flavors inside, but kind of tasted like grease on the outside. May have sat a little while. Pretty much no great beers as you would expect from a Chinese place, but a pretty good wine and cocktail list. Service was friendly and attentive until shortly after we got our entrees. This place gets really busy and they kind of abandon you after that. No offer of a second beer, but didn't take long to get the check.

    What a surprise... We headed out to get ramen noodles for lunch, but quickly learned that the Japanese don't rise early on Sunday's here in Portland (bummer!). A quick Yelp! search on my mobile phone for Sichuan style food (I was in the mood for noodles) and this place pops up nearby with strong reviews. It doesn't look fancy on the outside, and the parking lot really is tiny.. but once we walked in, the server staff was super friendly, the place was clean and decor was nice. I like spicy food so I ordered the Gwai Wer Noodles. It had the little "spicy" icon next to it, but the server acknowledged it's not that spicy and brought out a chili/pepper tray for me to increase the heat as I wished. This dish was the winner at my table - full of flavor, very juicy, the meat properly cooked. Yum! What's worth noting here is that they make their own noodles, hand-made onsite. And these are wonderful. 3 feet long (yes, the server brings scissors to the table to cut them if you wish), great bite and flavorful. Wife ordered the Zia Jiang Bean Sauce on Noodles. She was less impressed - it wasn't bursting with flavor, like mine was. But, I liked it. True, it was more bland (black bean sauce is mellow), so I added a bit of chili sauce to increase the zing. I ended up eating the left overs for lunch the next day - perfect left-over lunch. There is a lot more on the menu, but we were told the noodles are the "must get" dish. I'll be back.

    Shandong is another go-to spot for lunch. I must preface this review with the following disclaimer. From here on out I will refer to the food here as Chinese, but be aware that this is what I call "American" Chinese. Mostly fried or stir-fried bits of protein often breaded with a sweet and spicy sauce. There isn't anything wrong with that, but I do like to make the distinction between authentic Chinese and American-Chinese. And now back to our regularly scheduled programming. If there is one thing that I would ask the Shandong Genie for, it's more parking. Parking here is atrocious and if you're unlucky enough to miss the sign that warns you not to park in the West Parking Lot (which looks like it belongs to them but doesn't) then you'd better hope the Towing Gods are smiling down on you. The restaurant itself is very inviting. The ambiance is nice and the decor is clean and appropriately faux-asian. Here's a fun game you can play when you try this place out. Bring a thermometer and take regular measurements in the bathroom to see who can get the lowest reading. I'm not sure how they manage it, but the bathroom seems to transport you to the Arctic. (Sarcasm Translator: It's freaking cold in the bathroom!) While the service here is friendly and inviting, the efficiency and speed can be a little spotty. I've experienced some really great service and some quite terrible service at Shandong. That being said...I love the food here and the food itself is EXTREMELY consistent so I can let inconsistent service slide. Portions are perfect. Not too much to feel like you've overdone it, but not so little that you need to stop somewhere else to fill up. Every item I've tried has been really tasty and consistently so. The dry fried items are great. Manchurian Beef is one of my favorites. One of my primary complaints with American Chinese is that the breaded items are very often so bready, you forget you're even eating meat. Here they are lightly breaded, leaving the natural tastiness of whatever item lies beneath the batter. The quality of the food here leaves me contantly amazed at how inexpensive it is. A lunch special is typically less than $7.00 and it comes with a nice hot bowl of Hot and Sour Soup...one of my favorites. If you're looking for a great Chinese place with consistently good food and a great atmosphere, look no further. Shandong will not disappoint!

    Wow! I enjoyed vegetables before, but this place will make ensures you save a little more room on your plate for the side dishes. The eggplant and green beans are fantastic, so is the northern fried rice. the shandong chicken is pretty good too. I was a little disappointed with the very weak green tea and the mu shu pork, but we might have poured the tea too soon and maybe I just don't like mu shu. Try it for yourself and let me know. Definitely worth a visit.

    I wanted to try this place. It turned out to be OK. Service was nice and efficient. Friendly. The pot stickers for which I think I'm a pretty good judge of...were just OK. I was not impressed by them. The noodles themselves were very good. Texture showed that they are pretty freshly made. The sauce on the noodles was not quite what I was expecting. It tasted OK. Overall it was an OK experience...its not like I wouldn't go back...but I wouldn't make a special trip knowing that there are other Chinese restaurants that I enjoy for cheaper.

    It's hard to find good Chinese food in Portland. While I would stop short of calling Shandong authentic, it is certainly heads and tails above the common throng of "Golden Jade Imperial Fountain Palace Buffets" that litter the city with their watered-down Americanized fare. The interior is remarkable only in that it smacks of effort; great care was taken to elicit a contemporary vibe that married with characteristic Chinese decor. The end result is an oddly antiseptic atmosphere that made me feel as though I was intruding on someones carefully arranged Pier 1 dining room. Perhaps that is what is hip today? I wouldn't know. Even so, it was nice to sit down in a Chinese Restaurant that didn't look like the back room in a Shanghai Strip Club, or one where the faded memories of their 70s origins remain intact in modern day. Our server was very nice - prompt and courteous. They get high marks for being on the ball, and were very informative regarding the preparation time for some of the more advanced dishes, such as the Crab and Shiitake Shao Loong Bao. These pastries were just as the menu described; generously stuffed with crab. I can't say much about the spring rolls, but my wife and mother-in-law assure me they were good. (I did opt to use their in-house made mustard for the pastries, though...a dynamic combination, for sure!) Of the main dishes that we ordered, there are mixed reviews. On one hand, the Crispy Chicken (their variation on the American "General Tao's" (Tsao, Gau, Tso, Cho, etc) dish was quite worth the trip on its own. I loved the heavier ginger flavor, which really helped to set it apart from the others I have had in the past. The sweet and sour pork, however, seemed a bit bland. It was not a deal-breaker by any means, but there was so little flavor to it, that I could not work up the same degree of enthusiasm for it as my wife, who apparently thought it the best dish of the evening. Of particular note was the vegetable trio which, apart from being generous in portion, was actually served in a wine sauce that did NOT taste like used bath water. I have never really been able to enjoy these dishes in other restaurants, so Shandong gets points for providing a rich and pleasant taste that somehow managed to allow the natural, fresh taste of the veggies to shine through. All in all, a pleasant experience, and my new pick for Chinese in town. I would caution you on the parking, though - there is street parking available, but only about five spots in the actual lot. (Apparently, the Community Center next door will, in what is probably the most ironic definition of "community" I have ever known, tow your vehicle without a second thought.)

    Had the southern chicken fried rice, which isn't the traditional fried rice you get at most places. It was made with salt vs soy sauce. The taste, by far the best I have had. The quantity was more than I could finish, had to ask for a to go box. Large pieces of moist chicken. The flavor was just right, nothing over powering, could def taste all the ingredients. Also tasted my friend's dish which was the red curry crab fresh noodles. One word YUM! Noodles are made fresh to order and portions again were abundant! Clean, fast and good service. Everyone speaks English! Not the typical Chinese dive! Great addition to the neighborhood, looking forward to dine in again!

    This would be the exception to rules I have for good Chinese, rule #1 if it's not Formica, crappy lighting, and surly waitresses who get made at the slightest provocation it's not good.#2 If there isn't noisy chatter all over the place with the cooks yelling in the back it's not good. #3 If in fact the entire place doesn't not have one single Chinese person dining, it's not good. This place broke those rules and filled a much needed spot for flavorful American style Chinese food, with notable authenticity. My boy curses the none delivery Chinese food he's used to in NYC and Boston, this seems to be a suitable replacement although it's not delivery. It was a nice change of pace that the decor was new, modern-ish, and comfortable. The old swanky light samba music in the back round was cute and let me do a little chair dance as I sipped flowery jasmine tea. The iron pots were very nice also. First of all, I am not one to usually base all things on service, but I have to say this, wait let me change the star rating first. OK, our server was incredible, he should teach other server in other places what to do and how to behave. He was engaging, genuinely friendly and very very fast. OK that's out of the way let's talk food. I will say this, based on these reviews this seems like perhaps a locally owned pf changs? specifically everyone talked about the dried fried chicken, being a more flavorful general tsao. eh we tried it cause you guys wouldn't shut up about it. so, maybe not my thing, to me the flavors were..hrmm..what was expected with a little kick, it was good, it was obviously fried in good clean oil the presentation was nice, it was steamy hot, and their rice is very very good( which is high praise cause I'm a bitch about rice) what surprised me was no one talked about the noodles! I will never pass up anything that says fresh made noodles. now I will talk about the must haves: we had the shandong bean sauce noodles. wow...complex flavors, very rich and decadent, with excellent chewyness to the noodles. nice tender cuts of beef, love the zucchini and the little bits of cucumber. i love this dish, it'll be hard but I think I'll try the tan tan noodles next. really large portions, they reheat nicely as well. also must haves: crab bao - I risked my crab allergy to try one, it was worth the three bennadryl I downed later. the boa was fresh, nice and steamy and not too sticky, nice bao stuffed with flavorful flaky crab. hot and sour soup - excellent, needs a bit of stirring when it first arrives, the flavor blossoms quite a bit by the second bowl. it's enough for 4 people to have 1 cup or 2 to have several cups. it chock full of noms, not only really tender chicken but also some nice shrimp. We probably could have survived with just the noodles and soup honestly, there was a lot of food. but we escaped for about $40 with tip and leftovers for both of us the next day. The experience was welcomed, and we will definitely be back.

    Shandong is an Americanized Chinese restaurant with tasteful contemporary Asian decor. Their dishes utilize freshly prepared ingredients and good sauces. Although better than your standard formula Chinese restaurant, the food doesn't really stand out for me any more than what you'd get at a PF Changs. I'll make an exception for their complimentary tea and soup - both of which were quite good. With a small private parking lot, most patrons are forced to hunt for a parking spot out on the street during peak hours (which can be inconvenient). It is a good lunch spot as they have many lunch specials in the $6 to $8 range. I wouldn't recommend taking a large group here, however, as they don't seem to be equipped to handle the large volume of orders in an efficient manner.

    I try to think of life before eating at Shandong's. I'm not totally sure, but I'm guessing it was a bleak flavorless world. I try to go here every week. Scratch that, I CRAVE it every week. I asked if they put crack in their food and they said no. I believe them because that would be bad business. But I'm serious, I crave it like a pregnant woman craves hard boiled eggs (or so the stereotype goes). I haven't had many items on the menu. I have a hard time branching out from my favorites. I'll mention the wonton soup, which is made for two persons or Shaquille O'Neal. You could probably wear the bowl on your head afterward. It's super delish. Here's the meals that you MUST try. 1. Shandong Chicken - Easy to remember, the title of the restaurant is half of the name of this dish. It's a bit spicy, with soft, tender white chicken bits in some flavor blast of a sauce. There's some random dry hot peppers (not sure the name) that I venture to eat for the fun of sweating. The dish also includes scattered fermented black beans which add this tasty, salty flavor. Get it with rice. You can't see me right now, but my mouth is watering. 2. Gwai Wer Noodles - To explain this dish is like trying to explain the word 'explain'. I'll try, and you'll just have to trust me on this one. It's (homemade) noodles, in some type of spicy-ish tomato paste (I say paste, it's not like pasta sauce in taste..a little thicker in texture), with zucchini, chicken, onions. I personally haven't had a flavor like this before, which is always exciting to say. And I was hesitant at first to try, it didn't sound right. Now I got a habit that I can't shake. So there you have it. Make two trips. Flip a coin. Make the choice. Stay out of my way when I want my Shandong (that's what she AND I said)!

    I like shitty, low quality American Chinese food that comes in gigantic portions that I eat for three days. Is that SO WRONG? BUT this place was good too, and it wasn't low quality, nor were the portions huge. I feel so torn! We started with spring rolls, shao long bao, and the token complementary tea. The tea was served in a pot that could only be made if dark matter, it was so heavy. However, if our table was attacked by raptors or zombies, we could have adequately defended ourselves with it. The spring rolls were okay. They had a decent crunch, but were not super flavorful. my husband seemed to be enjoying his shao long bao however. As for the entrees, the crunchy dry fried chicken was so close to hitting the mark, but for my tastes it had to much ginger in it. It was, however, excellently crunchy. The sweet and sour pork was about as perfect as sweet n sour pork gets. We also got the vegetable trio, which advertises itself as containing bok choi but was mysteriously lacking. What was there, however, tasted fresh and fabulous. The wine sauce was light but had a good flavor to it. For this outing we had three people, and ordered three dishes and two appetizers (eating family style, of course). We were definitely satiated, but not stuffed. For around $50, I probably could have gotten food somewhere else and had two days of leftovers, but is the quantity worth a switch in quality? And am I even taking a hit to quality since the food wasn't really singing to me in the first place? I honestly have no idea. Like I said, I'm torn!

    Really awesome northern Chinese cuisine. Someone went crazy with the Ikea lighting fixtures, but this is a great, comfortable, bright room. Not a huge room - it feels just the right size. Sizzling rice soup is very good, very light, not too salty. Pot stickers are HUGE. Peapod beef in oyster sauce is pretty typical, and the red curry seafood noodle dish is wonderful (they'll cut the noodles at your request - I kinda wish I hadn't had them do it - I think it would have been easier to eat them without that. Slurping is GOOD, after all!) Prices are very reasonable, and my brother-in-law says the Mu Shu is AWESOME. Their parking lot is very small and only has a few spaces. Don't park in the bigger parking lot behind the restaurant. Try to find somewhere on the street.

    I'm super picky about Chinese food, too, and I agree with the poster who said the dishes lack complexity. The Shandong chicken tasted like vinegar and sweet chili sauce. My friend's curry chicken tasted like curry paste but little else. Our hot and sour soup was room temperature. It's not greasy-spoon-bad Chinese. The restaurant's decor is tasteful and the plates are attractive, but the food doesn't live up to the compliments it gets. We both agreed that if we had to choose between Shandong and P.F. Chang's we'd pick the latter. Heck, I'd probably choose Panda before I'd go back here.

    This place was awesome! We went to Shandong based on the reviews people gave on Yelp, and we were not disappointed... I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, and we will be coming back. The food was fantastic and the prices were great. Yum.

    Shandong has become my go-to Chinese place in Portland. It's casual, un-fussy elegance on the inside belies the randomness of the building itself, perched in the corner of a large parking lot for the community center across the street. Favorite dishes include the cashew chicken, dry sauteed green beans, and noodles that are excellent. The pot stickers a plump and delicious with a trio of sauces to mix and match. The Hot and Sour soup which features a few bobbing prawns is the perfect food for a rainy night or a head cold (or both). The waitstaff are friendly and earnest, rounding out a terrific overall experience. I leave the question of authenticity or inauthenticity to others. I don't care either way, I'm just glad it's here...

    I've never had an amazing plate at Shandong, but I've also never had a horrible one either. It's pretty good in general, and the ingredients seem pretty fresh. Service is fine. Lunch or daily special price is good, normal dinner is a little pricier but nothing too bad. Thumbs up over all.

    I don't normally write reviews but for this restaurant I felt like it was needed. This is a new hidden gem in the Hollywood district. Not very well known yet and the name Shandong needs to get out there. The first the you notice when walking in or just right outside the door is how amazing the food smells. You get the aroma of homemade Chinese food and growing up in a Chinese household there's nothing better and the smells remind me of when I was a kid. The second thing you notice is the decor is not like any other typical Chinese restaurant you don't see the red booths. You get a nice modern look with. The waitstaff seems fairly new and inexperienced but I guess that's what happens when you have white girls serving Chinese food and you're not at PF Changs or panda express or maybe it's because this is a new restaurant either way they were very friendly and personable and you could tell they were trying Now about the main event... The food. I would highly recommend the calamari. They are battered deep fried goodness severed with a delicious sauce on top. This by far is my favorite dish. Anything "Shandong" has been great also, the chicken wings are something I would suggest trying the chicken wings, they're a little on the spicy side for me but with some rice and beer or wine you can't go wrong. The steamed dumplings they make are another dish everyone should try unless you're allergic to crab, but they use real crab in the dumplings and fried wontons which is very rare to find. Overall I highly recommend this place I hear you can follow them on twitter and Facebook too.

    Yeah!! Good black bean sauce and in my area. Still not bay area quality Chinese food due to the Kung Pao being light on the spice but still good taste. I really enjoyed the black bean chicken and they were very nice and made it with green beans for me instead of green peppers and onions. They said they are thinking about adding delivery service when they 'catch their breath'. We really hope so!!!

    Friday night. GF out of town. Gotta feed the kids. Don't want to cook. What to do? I fired up the ol' Yelp and searched for Chinese. That's the one cuisine the kiddos will always agree on without any tears, drama and/or whining. Shandong had the highest rating in our neck of the NE. Off we went. The place looks bigger on the inside than it does from the street. The dining room is clean and the decor is tidy and modern. We ordered sweet and sour pork (the boy always orders S&S P), braised tofu, sauteed green beans and veggie chow mein. The prices aren't low, so I was keeping my fingers crossed for some quality. That's what we got. Besides the shocking blood red of the S&S P, everything looked wonderful. It all tasted as good as it looked. We scarfed it all down and barely had anything to take home. (Of course, we forgot the leftover boxes on the table. Grrrr.) This place is a gem. We may have to go back when GF gets back from her travels tomorrow.

    I wanted to like Shandong. I really really did. My first experience was very positive. We ordered the hot and sour soup, pot stickers, a beef noodle dish and beef with snow peapods. The pot stickers were great and so was the hot and sour soup. The two beef dishes were okay. They were good, but the sauces seemed to taste the same. My second experience at Shandong was underwhelming. I ordered food to go. I called to place the order, and the woman who answered the phone said can you hold on and then left the phone on the counter for 5 minutes before I hung up. I called back asking for a dish with beef and veggies. She recommended the Shandong beef. I went to pick it up and when I got home discovered that this recommended beef dish had only beef and a sprinkle of cabbage. I called to see if something was forgotten and she said none of their dishes have a mix of meat and vegetables. Why she didn't say that in the first place I don't know. I really don't think that she listened to my question. Also, the sauce tasted very similar to the other beef dishes that I tried. The third time that I went the hot and sour soup was just off. It tasted sweet. Not the same soup that I tried the first or even second time. Also had another beef dish (beef with broccoli). Their beef dishes all seem to have the same or very similar sauces. In summary, will I go back? Yes. Do I think there are kinks to be worked out? Definitely. I think I'll wait a couple of months to see if they can make some necessary adjustments to the cooking and customer service.

    I went here with a group of friends, thinking this place would offer a decently authentic Chinese experience (two of them having been to Shandong province, as it turns out). Quite the opposite. From the atmosphere, waitstaff, and most importantly, food--none of them were what we expected after reading a few yelp reviews (not to mention the high rating!). I tried a few things on the menu: shandong beef, some noodle dish that was supposedly their most popular, an order of the pork bao, and a special of the day, "pork belly soup." I'm not giving this place one star because of a couple pluses: the Pork belly soup was actually decent--well, the pieces of pork belly at least--the broth and vegetable accoutrements were completely underwhelming. The other plus was the bao. Even still, it wasn't above any bao I've had at other establishments. The popular noodle dish I ordered literally tasted like canned Chef Boyardee. Tomatoey-sweet with a hint of spicey and no depth to the flavors. The noodles are supposedly homemade but tasted more like dried ramen that you'd buy in the grocery store. They were soggy and not chewy, and had no "meat" to them like good homemade noodles. Shandong beef: again, decent but absolutely not 4 or 5 star worthy. Anyway, this place was completely underwhelming. If you're looking for some standard American-North Chinese food that offers no real Chinese atmosphere (I think I heard Kelly Clarkson being played), I guess this is your place. p.s. like other reviewers have said, DO NOT park in the huge lot next door. You have to park on the street. p.p.s. track lighting everywhere

    I've been here over and over again. For a reason. Food: 5 (Just really high-quality, non-greasy Chinese food) Atmosphere: 4 (Very clean, nice interior; comfortable booths) Service: 3 (No consistency in waitstaff, but attention is just right, service is quick) Value: 4 (7$ for seafood, 6.25$ for pork/chicken dishes at lunch. This is very inexpensive for what you get.) Sustainability: 1 (No mention of organic, local, nor of energy concerns within the facility) I'm a regular here. I can't help it. I've gotten something different every time I've come. This place is a little bit different from many Chinese restaurants in that its entrees are complete meals; meaning that if you order something with meat in it, you don't just get meat. The kung pao has bell peppers, peanuts, brown sauce. The shandong dishes have a slew of vegetables. Besides having a great variety of vegetables and meat, the service is earnest and attentive, no matter if it is busy or not. The staff tends to be young (I would guess high-school aged), but they do a good job. The cooks don't dally with your order; you're served quickly and in and out in under 40 minutes for lunch. My recommendations are the following two dishes: dry-fried (mandarin elsewhere) calamari, which is lightly battered, not chewy and in a sweet/sour/slightly-salty sauce that is incredible. Additionally, they have celery-free kung pao dishes: onions, bell peppers, and lots of peanuts. Many places have a gloppy, crappy sauce and it is hunt-for-meat-amongst-celery (filler). Not here, the kung pao is excellent. A coworker got Mongolian beef once that looked really good too. Oh, and before I forget, I don't want you to forget to try the noodles. The tan tan noodles are something you won't experience anywhere else (noodles, chicken, veggies, peanut sauce (not a Thai peanut sauce, though) which is very savory) and the crab curry noodles are enough to feed you for about 2-3 meals. The noodles are hand-made in the restaurant daily, and it makes a huge difference. The noodles are the deal here. They're new in the game, but I can definitely tell you, it's pretty damned good. It is worth a stop by. And I asked the owner if he'll start delivery, and he said he would in a few months as soon as he catches his breath. Takeout/delivery from there would just be gourmet!

    I've tried two things here so far-- the tan tan noodles and garlic eggplant. I didn't realize there were so many reviewers who disliked the tan tan noodles. I wish I had read their reviews earlier because I certainly wouldn't have ordered them. As some people had written, the tan tan noodles were not spicy at all and bland. I'm not sure if it's the noodle or the corn starch they added to thicken the sauce/soup but it tasted very floury and starchy to me. Sadly, I ended up throwing half of it away because I couldn't eat it. The garlic eggplant is so-so. The flavor isn't as bold as places I've visited in the past but it's still edible. It's not the greatest chinese food but I'm willing to try the standard dishes in the future (i.e. fried rice) and see if they're any better.

    Came here for lunch on a friend's recommendation and glad I tried it. Split two dishes with a co-worker, had the dried fried calamari and shandong bean hand pulled noodles. I'm not a fan of spicy food but the calamari was not overly hot and the sweetness of the sauce offset the heat. Perfectly flavored dish that was not greasy at all. The squid was a tad bit on the chewy side but not a big deal to me. The hand pulled shandong bean noodles were awesome, perfect texture and chewiness. The sauce for it was incredible, I highly recommend this dish! This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in NE Portland I've been to and is way better than PF Changs for sure. Can't go wrong with good food and huge portions at an affordable price!

    3.5 stars- but a treat when visiting from San Francisco- Shangdong in NE Portland, OR was visited while on a recent visit to family. I arrived at about 4:30p for happy hour and ordered the Chilean Rock Crab Bao which was tasty and well seasoned- very good. The Pork Soup Shao Loon Bao had not enough soup (should burst in your mouth) and was a little stringy- but still had good flavor. The House Wantons were deep fried perfectly and a nice treat. Pot Stickers were well prepared and very good. The Spring Roll was worth the taste but not great. My waitress mixed the seasoning sauces at the table and served (and prepared) a nice pepper infused vodka martini. I want this place to open in Alameda, CA!! wu can= lunch

    Craving the delicious dumplings I had experienced only last week, I took the family to Shandong during happy hour. I ordered some of the basics to show off this little gem, and then let them order two additional dishes. I cautioned on ordering too much, promising full bellies with the seemingly small amount of food ordered. My two hungry men were stuffed in the end , and only 3 days later, we are all craving the sizzling rice soup. Everything you read from others is accurate: freshly made dumplings freshly made soup crispy fried chicken no greasy mush excellent service About the service: They are over the top client oriented. The two ladies are constantly checking in, offering water, more drink, more everything. Really sweet ladies. They even demonstrated a TREMENDOUS amount of patience and professionalism while having to deal with a belligerent customer - and he was not drunk, just a jerk.

    I have a hard time seeing how any of the previous yelpers walked in to this place and thought they would get authentic Chinese food. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it! While the tea is free, the steamed rice that should just come with your meal is not ($1 per serving). I also didn't get the free soup other yelpers mentioned. I had the chicken Mu Shu, Cherry Pork, and Manchurian Beef. All of it was delicious! Only complaint is I asked for extra spicy Manchurian Beef, and on a scale of 1-10 it was probably a 2. Can't wait to stress my desire for extra heat on the next visit!

    Wow what a disappointment. I have to admit things seem to have gone down hill.. or perhaps its just the take out food.. I just ordered a sweet and sour chicken lunch.. and WOW $6.25 + .50 for brown rice.. not bat "i thought" I have had this in the restaurant as a sit down customer and loved it! Now I did take it back to my office.. a 6 minute drive.. But i opened it.. and SOGGY everything.. The brown rice looked a pale shade of white.. I was really shortchanged on the chicken considering take out customers do not get soup.. Overall.. I will NEVER order take out lunch from here again.. If you really want a value do like I do and go back to Hung Far Low off division.. A FAR better lunch value.. I could have spend the same amount of money and gotten so much more.. I am so disappointed in what was my favorite Chinese food restaurant.

    What an awesome pleasant little gem of an affordable authentic Chinese restaurant in Hollywood! Went here for a big group lunch of 27 people a few Saturdays ago. I think we made arrangements beforehand, but I was still impressed with their ability to accommodate us. They really maximized the space in this small well-decorated space. I was also very pleased at the decor of this place. It was super clean and modern--how refreshing. The food was awesome, and so affordable! I highly recommend the calamari.... well cooked, and the texture, is SO GOOD. Nice, friendly, and delicious food. Street parking only.

    This is just OK Chinese food. Actually disappointing given the glowing reviews. However the staff, albeit non-Asian from what I saw was very friendly and offered good service. The food is very Americanized, almost designed specifically for what a non-discerning pallet thinks Chinese food should taste like. In Portland, no one should have to settle for mediocre Asian food given all of the good choices we have. A sampling of what we tasted: Kung Pao Chicken - just ok and not very spicey Spring Rolls - more like deep fried egg rolls filled with stringey celery or lettuce or something of that nature. Hot and Sour soup - nothing outstanding here Chinese Braised Tofu - very bland

    A true gem in a world dominated by MSG-laden vs. fast-food "Chinese" food! I had never even noticed Shandong, even though the bright red sign was conspicuous in the autumn night. After reading the positive reviews on Yelp, we arrived at the height of a Saturday dinner rush. The dining area of the restaurant is on the smaller side and the entryway spills onto the main eating area, so as we waited to be seated I was dancing to avoid the bustling servers and exiting customers. But the wait for a table was less than 10 minutes (in retrospect, a very small sacrifice to pay for their amazing food), and once I was seated I noticed the decorations were modern and minimalist, making the space open and friendly. My party of four ordered a family-style feast -- Appetizers: Potstickers and a large order of Hot & Sour Soup for appetizers. Main Dishes: Mongolian Beef, Sweet and Sour Pork, Cashew Chicken, and Vegetable Chow Mein. The Hot & Sour Soup arrived first. Now, I usually am not a fan of Hot & Sour but as they had no Egg Flower we were left with no choice. The large order arrived in a HUGE bowl that could easily serve about 6 or perhaps even 8. It was neither too hot nor too sour, but full of tofu, shrimp, chicken and egg. If all Hot & Sour soups tasted as good as Shandong's, I would have been a fan long time ago. The Potstickers arrived next (total of six). Now, I've had plenty of potstickers that were so fried and doughy that isn't worth eating to get at what little meat there was inside. But these hand-made potstickers put those to shame! They were so lightly doughed and perfectly cooked that the outsides almost melted in your mouth. It was almost like eating a Krispy Kreme doughnut fresh off the oven, if that comparison doesn't gross you out. The main dishes came out just as we were finishing up our appetizers. I think it sufficient for me to say simply that the Mongolian Beef and Cashew Chicken were the type of food that makes you realize how good something can taste. Each of the meat dishes were absolutely smooth in taste and texture. Even the chow mein noodles were perfectly cooked -- sans crisp burnt edges or stuck together in some amalgamated clump. Two things prevent this from being a 5-star review: I didn't eat much of the Sweet and Sour Pork but those who did commented that the meat was a bit too overdone and the sauce itself didn't have that "sticky" quality that other Chinese food restaurants have. Now, I maintain that is a good reason to like Shandong -- the fresh nature of their food -- but if you're looking for a neon-orange, stick-to-your-gut sauces, this ain't it. Secondly, rice doesn't come with a meal. There were about four servers that came and asked us if we wanted rice, but when we asked about it, they said it does cost extra. The good news: our main server said that a order of rice for "two" generally is enough for a party of four, so we went for it. She was right -- we had plenty of rice for everyone and had some left over. Call me old-fashioned, but why make rice an upsale item at all? The total price for four main dishes and appetizers and the extra cost of rice was about $50. Considering everyone left full and we walked out with a few leftovers, this is an amazing deal that I can't wait to share with other friends and family!

    I don't want to overstate the case, but... offhand I cannot remember ever having better Chinese food. The Hot & Soup soup was spot on, very clean tasting with just the right balance between vinegar and pepper. We also got Dry Sauteed Green Beans, which were first-rate. The beans had a very fresh snap to them, and just a bit of spicy heat. The Dry Fried Chicken had a sweet orange sauce and a good peppery burn. And they offer brown rice! Definitely looking forward to visiting again.

    Yummy! Just got take out from here. Delish! The wonton soup is great, and the pork wontons were fab. Thankfully, not another chinese restaurant that throws shrimp randomly into every wonton, spring roll, etc. Yes, you can order it with shelfish, but for those of us that have an allergy, this is a place I would recommend. Got the Mu Shu and it wasn't too oily. I would highly recommend!

    I've only been once, but I see that I am not the only one who was immediately impressed. I had the lunch special, shitake and beef. It was really good. The shitake were fresh and the portion was just right for lunch. It came with green tea and some really good hot and sour soup. They don't have brown rice and there aren't any vegetarian soups, although there are some decent veggie main menu items - most notably ma pu tofu clay pot. I will defitnitely return.

    Eh. Food was pretty bland for all the hype. Got the basic Chinese dishes (broccoli beef, jung pao chicken etc) and was not impressed. It wasn't bad, just not special at all. the only thing that was decent was the hot and sour soup, the dumplings were ok but had way too much ginger in them. the service was very pleasant though. DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE!

    I am pretty picky when it comes to Chinese food but I was very excited to eat at Shandong. I am looking for my perfect Portland Chinese restaurant. Recently I went to Lucky Strike on Hawthorne which was tasty if uneven. Shandong is even closer to my house and had better reviews. All of this is to say I had some high expectations. I went with two friends and we had the sesame beef, chicken with mushrooms and home made noodles with beef. Everything tasted the same. There was no spice, no sweetness, no complexity of flavor. The only flavor was super salty. The texture of the sesame beef was nice as was the texture of the home made noodles. But overall none of it tasted very good. I ate because I was hungry and then stopped as soon as I wasn't. I had a lot of leftovers and ended up throwing them away just because I couldn't work up the interest in eating a bowl of heavily salty sauced meat. However, the reviews on yelp are so good that I kind of want to try one more time to see if I somehow ordered the 3 worst dishes on the menu. In good news, the young host was playing a pretty sweet playlist of 90s R&B.

    This great new addition to the Hollywood District offers Northern Chinese done with fancy- restaraunt touches at very reasonable prices. Everything seems handmade with great care and the owner himself (Henry) came out to make sure we were happy with our meal........terrific place, great food, I'm happy to give Shandong a rave review! I'm already planning my next visit.

    Excellent upscale Chinese food at a reasonable price. Friendly staff (a little too pushy with the cocktail menu though... I can't wait to try those drinks... I hope they live up to the prices and the hype), great atmosphere. My Asian friends give it the thumbs-up, so I feel good about eating there. Tried the Moo Shu pork, and thought it was delicious. Also tried some kind of noodle that I didn't care for, but my friends really liked. Overall, I strongly recommend Shandong.

    Wow, I just can't jump on the bandwagon. It is good food. The restaurant is cute as a button. But when a friend sent me here for "the best and most authentic Chinese" she has ever had, I was truly set up to be let down. And then I remembered, she is from Gresham. We had house wontons, twice cooked pork and shitake mushroom beef. It was all good food. The order of wontons only includes 4, not sure if I would have ordered it for the price had I known that. The beef was quite good, the pork may have been a bit over sauced, but the flavor was nice. The dishes don't come with rice and you have to order it separately. The servers are very young and inexperienced, but friendly and efficent. Overall, it is good food, but really, tastes like most other decent Chinese that I have had. Just served in a bit of a more perky environment.

    Read some reviews and decided to go in with good expectations. It was less than satisfactory in terms of customer service; the staff was really quiet and only came to the table to serve and give the check. Never came over to see if every thing was ok or if I needed anything else. The food was pretty good, shrimp dumplings didn't have much form so they kind of fell apart but were still good. The Cherry pork were kind of a let down for me because even though it had flavor it wasn't texturally tasty. A bit too breaded so it was just crunchy and saucy. Overall atmosphere is nice but overall service isn't.

    The best Chinese Food I've had in Portland. Get the hot sour soup while you wait, I would say its "extra chunky" with the amount of chicken, prawns, tofu, egg, and veggies. Its so good! Just writing this review right now makes me want to go there. Also, one of my choice menu items is the dry fried calamari. But I love seafood (if its good). I have had about 7 different dishes from Shandong, and all of them were spot on. I love the Kung Pao Prawns too. Basically, if you haven't been here and you live in Portland, its worth checking out. And to top it off, free green tea! They deserve all the business they get, so check it out!

    Simply put Shandong has to be my favorite place to eat. Prices are excellent, the food is amazing and the people are really cool. Been coming here since they opened and honestly there are some weeks where I will go 2-3 times a week for lunch. The Cherry pork is good, the noodles are really good and made to order, but I can't seem to get away from the Kung Pao Beef. Jeeezus that dish rocks!!! Spicy, full of flavor and quality ingredients. Henry use's many of his family recipies which are authentic Chinese dish's. For the people who complain about it not bieng "Authentic enough" get over it, you wouldn't eat real authentic Chinese!!! For Chinese food in Portland, this place is worthy of a 5 star, possibly more if they were allowed :)

    Five stars for a neighborhood chinese joint? Absolutely. Seriously good Chinese grub at lesser-restaurant prices. Sign me up for pan-pacific crabmeat wontons. Dry fried prawns in a fantastic chili garlic sauce. Not too oily mu shu veg, with nice crispy veg and thick (maybe a bit too thick) pancakes, green onion and hoisin. Cashew chicken in a dark red spicy sauce - different than standard and delicious. The noodles at the table next to me looked amazing. I am psyched this place is in the hood.

    Talk about bang for your buck! In this town, we are seriously lacking good-old, kick-ass-comforting Chinese food. But we've found the best spot to stuff your face with nostalgically delicious crispy fried pork, awesome rice dishes, and savory-spicy garlic eggplant. A bowl of way-too-much soup for two people---mmm Dragons in the Garden---is a screaming $5.50. It may be a few minutes to park your hungry bum, but it's certainly worth the wait. Bar seating is quite entertainingly un-portland; I recommend snagging one of the 6 bar stools for a great time and a cheap meal. nom nom nom.

    This food is FANTASTIC! Everything we had was very fresh tasting, the sauces were awesome...just perfect. The produce is local, no more than two days old, everything made to order. Even the pancakes for the Mu Shu are handmade! The service was wonderful, the decor very nice, and on top of all that, it is very inexpensive for all that you get! We will go back again and again! (Just wish it was closer!!) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
