The food is mediocre and I feel gross after having eaten. It is bland and not flavorful.

Great food and friendly service. The combination dinners were delicious. Highly recommend the crab puffs.

Our family loves this place for their szechuan dinner to go. An order for 2 feeds our family of 4 plus leftovers for a couple more lunch meals. Quality may not be best in PDX, but still good and large quantity.

The only thing you need to know about Rainbow Dragon is that they have THE most delicious crab rangoons EVER. The 5 stars are for the rangoons. Seriously. Please. You won't want to share. I promise. Ignore the ambiance. Get the food to go. This is the kind of food you pig out on while you watch Friends reruns in your sweatpants, people. Don't be ashamed.

Pros: in house made potstickers with a lovely spicy sauce. Huge portions for the price! Yummy spareribs in a tangy sauce. Cons: nice little bar area. The decor hasn't been changed since it was a seafood restaurant, and by the looks of it, that was 30 years ago. Usually crap decor or no decor in a Chinese restaurant is a good sign, the food is always better. In this one, not so much, it's mediocre food and nothing special then so many mediocre Chinese places in town. Bottom line: you want good Chinese food, go to shandong. But if you're close by to rainbow dragon, wanna curl up by yourself with a bunch of unhealthy food and watch tv, this is a good enough place to go for take out.

I don't understand why I have more than a gallon of lo mein noodles in my fridge. They're very tasty, but...that's just too many noodles. I'm fairly certain I asked for a regular sized order. It's twice the size of my beef & broccoli order. I don't understand why I was given two inedible deep fried egg rolls that I didn't order and a box full of sweet & sour sauce. Sweet & sour sauce in a box? What? Having said that, the bathtub of lo mein noodles was very tasty, the beef & broccoli was good, the crab puffs were very good, and the potstickers were more than edible. Funky little place. I'll be back.

The salt and pepper shrimp is Da Bomb! I crave it regularly. Owners are very friendly and you get large portions. The restaurant could certainly use a makeover, but the food is good.

Love this place. Cheap, large portions and strong drinks! I do take away a point for customer service not being up to par. Keep in mind there may be a bit of a cultural difference, so don't be too harsh on their skills in that area.

Will not be back..the first few times ok it was a mistake but by the 5th time my husband was pissed. They brought the egg flower soup and i asked for hard noodles to put inside instead of the crackers. She never brought it. I said ok. I get my food and my chicken chowmein had hard noodles not the soft ones. I told the waitress I wanted the hard oodles for my soup. She fixed it. Every time I have went in afterwards the same thing. My husband and I went Sunday and they did it again. She went on to tell me to next time ask for no noodles. She sd would fix this time like she was doing me a favor. Can u believe she brought it back w chunks of vegetables with no noodles so still got it wrong. I just wanted chicken chow mein w egg flower soup ..I won't be back ever..

This place has the best Chinese food in town and out of town..... it is greasy, it is so cheap, my ex boyfriend was convinced this place is a cover for the Chinese mob, the tables are slanted down hill, the bathroom smells musty and they have a complete seafood motif mounted Marlin and all.... BUT i have been going to this place for 15 years, i will not ever go anywhere else for Chinese food, because it is consistently awesome and cheap.

The egg flower soup was delicious! The main course was pretty good, and they do give you a pretty nice size portion. My only two complaints is the lack of good service and the place seemed pretty dirty. The waiter that was there seemed pretty nice and gave ok sevice, but the waitress lacked a lot on service. My fiance and I had empty drink glasses through most of our meal. I had to sit and stare at her until she approached our table. So in general... Good food and poor service. But I'll eventually go back again.

The limited lunch menu was disappointing. The decor hasn't changed much since whatever seafood place that was here first went under, making a cute but hokey atmosphere. Mongolian beef should never have canned mushrooms in it; everything else was mediocre at best. Not much better than grocery store deli chinese food overall.

2 years ago this place was great but not any more... All the "chicken" dishes are made with some kind of bleached white rubber tofu material that cannot be identified by any lab?!? Maybe they are just getting their cats from a different source or something but I just can't eat it any more without major gastro-intestinal issues... One good note, if you can get it at least warm, the hot and sour soup is good!?!

This was a favorite until the other day ordered takeout went straight there in the time they told me got home started eating and my boyfriend started to go into a cold sweat, stomach cramps, vomiting and dizzy spells from the hot and sour soup that is the one thing I didn't eat that he did. Needless to say be careful if you go here. Plus the owner when I brought the food back told me he never wanted to see me again. Awful customer service if you ever get sick from their food. I highly recommend going elsewhere if you want Chinese food

Tried it for the first time this place was great we had BBQ pork, egg roll , egg flower soup, fried rice, fried shrimp , beef and broccoli. The chicken was ok the rest was amazing fast and friendly service ! You will not be disappointed !

This place is right next to my house so even though I had a bad feeling about it I thought id check it out. It was gross. The portions were huge so my brother was really happy but the only thing I could actually eat were the crab wontons. which were actually surprisingly good.

  • Flo A.

The service was fine, the crab puffs were good, but my meal was the worst I've had in a long time. The chicken was hard and rubbery, the BBQ pork was dry and burnt and the steamed rice was fine. Will not be returning.

I love this Restaurant!! i grew up with the family that owns the place, it has always been a favorite spot for me. Good Prices, Great Food. The building leaves something to be desired but you cant have everything Tip: if you are sick with a cold or congested, Try the Hot and soup soup, for just 3.50 you can get a Huge container and you will be feeling better with in ten minutes! Its a Great spot!! check it out!

Pretty good food. Enormous portions! Place is a bit dirty though. Ceiling has like 6 inches of dust. Oh, and I hate the shark.

Good food, good prices, family style portions :) looks like it used to be a sizzler or some other type of kitchy seafood restaurant at some point. I have a hard time finding good, cheap Chinese close to where I live so I like this place...

  • John K.

I always go home with a take home. This place gives you enough food. One order is like feeding two people. I split lunch with my friend a lot. Sweet and sour Pork is good. From the outside it looks a little unkempt. Landscape could use some help. It use to be an old seafood place so some of the seafood decor is still around. Service is good. The food and price is so reasonable my buddy and I keep going back. He feeds a family of 4 here. May not be the best place to take a hot date; unless its for the food and price.

I went here a few weeks ago and unfortunately I will not be back. I ordered the Mongolian beef and it was soooo salty. I had them redo it, and while less salty, it was still extremely salty, also, greasy. I have never had anyone screw up on Mongolian beef. I was disappointed. They asked again if it was okay, but what was I suppose to say? No, redo it a third time? I knew I would not like it... For those of you who want good Chinese food go to China delight. It's a lot farther away but the food is fantastic.

I live within blocks of Rainbow Dragon and get take out often. They have it ready in minutes and the portions are huge. The building used to be Biff's Seafood and they never bothered to change the decor. I believe it's been close to twenty years since Biff's closed....Doesn't look like they have cleaned inside either this place is a real dump but the food is good. I'm sure none of it is authentic Chinese and it is certainly not a hipster joint but you get a ton of food, fast. Skip the Sweet & Sour chicken or pork and get the spareribs. They are not deep fried in a bright red sugar sauce but are stewed in a wonderful tangy sauce. Best thing I've had on the menu so I order them every time. BBQ pork is always moist and tender. Chow Meins and Lo Meins are always fresh and hot. Fried rice can be dry and flavorless sometimes but I use it to soak up the wonderful sauce from the Sweet & Sour Spareribs so I don't care...Prawns have more breading than I'd like but their red sauce, whatever the heck it is, is delicious.

This may not be the best Chinese food in Portland, but it's still pretty good. The portions are huge and way cheap. Plus, they get everything out to you really quick, have no problems with big groups, are open a little later than most places in the area and their decor is perfectly kitch.

i had just moved to Portland on November 6th, 2010, and my sisters and nesphews and i decided to go to this place based on the number of cars in the lot relative to other Chinese restaurants we had seen. The service is actually pretty good as far as beign quick and attentive and the prices are very reasonable. However the servers did not seem happy, not one of them was smiling, which kind of akes away from teh eating experience. The food however is bland, cheaply prepated and had i known what it was like i would not have gone there. Call the food below average in every way. It ws bland the sauces seemed weak in flavor and nobody really enjoyed the food even though we were all really hungry having just unloaded the moving truck.

Meh, don't think we'll be back. This was the first Chinese restaurant we have checked out in our neighborhood, and were not impressed. With so many other Chinese restaurants around, we'll check out others. We ordered the Family dinner and were overwhelmed with the amount of food we ordered. They get a plus for the huge portions, but unfortunately, since the food wasn't that tasty or interesting, we weren't excited about so much leftovers. Of all the food we sampled here, nothing stood out and most of it was below average. The service was good and friendly and the prices and selection were pretty good. We accidentally ordered mostly fried dishes, and I would think that if we had a better variety of food we may have enjoyed it more. This place used to be a seafood-type restaurant...if you go, you'll get a laugh at the cheesy out of place "ship" decor.

  • Carolyn W.

I guess if you live within walking distance of this place it's better than no (greasy) Chinese food at all, but otherwise there are many other places relatively close with much better food. I will concede that the portions are generous and the servers seem nice, but in terms of food I think I'll head to Happy Garden next time.

I love Rainbow Dragon! If you're looking for creative Hipster food, which I love, this is not the place. If you're looking for down home Chinese food and lots of it, I highly recommend this restaurant. I've been going there for years and they've watched my babies grow into teenagers. It's a wonderful family that runs the place and they always give great service. Tip like the food is more expensive than it is! Oh and if you like your spicy food spicy, ask for it. They make things mild. Unfried favorites- Mongolian beef, kung pao triple. Fried favorites- sesame chicken, general Tso chicken. Love the ubiquitous egg flour soup too!

I really really enjoy their food. They have a lunch menu and a dinner menu but the portions are HUGE no matter which menu you're ordering off of. Everything on their menu is cheap. This is definitely a place to go for fantastic food and great, speedy service if you're on a budget or not. I have had their BBQ pork plus sweet and sour chicken in a lunch combo that comes with a cup of their soup and a fortune cookie. I was a little surprised they make a point to say that comes with your meal. Anyways, I got so full from this delicous chinese food and even had some for left overs! Not bad for only $4! There is also a lounge at this place because the group I was with enjoyed watching a drunk lady stumble out of there and try to get into her friend's car at 11:30 in the morning! I wish I could take away .5 of a star though. The restaurant you can tell, used to be a seafood restaurant. Those who own it now have not changed the decor except for adding in some paper fans and a buddha statue. There are still the gigantic fish hanging on the wall along with a boat wheel with lanterns for a chandelier. The sign for this place is still a ship too!

You just can't beat Rainbow Dragon. Is there better Chinese food out there? You bet. Can you feed a family of five AND have leftovers for under $25 at any of those other places? Not a chance. Yes, the decor is cheesy, but it's been cheesy for so long now that it's part of what makes this place home. The food is good, the selection is good and the staff are great. We've watched their children grow up there over the years, and Henry (the owner/operator) is the nicest guy. Fast, tasty and very reasonably priced with huge servings. Pretty hard to beat!

  • Courtney S.

This is by far my go to splurging resteraunt ! Cheap, huge portions and all around good. Yes, the decor Is a little off, but I'm going there for the food not to worry about some fish on a wall . Who cares? I love this place! The sweet and sour pork is killer, the egg flower soup is amazing! the staff is always friendly and helpful. We've been going here for years, and I will continue to go for years to come!

This place is good if you need to get a lot of food for very little money, but beyond that, it's not great. Everything I tried was surprisingly bland. How do you get that little flavor with all of the salt and grease of Chinese? The servers were friendly but didn't seem particularly knowledgeable - our waitress had to ask three other people before she could tell me what one of the dishes was. All told, it's better than Denny's in the quick and cheap department, but I probably won't return.

5 stars all the way. Great service, great food, and an awesome bar to wash down all the food. People complain about the greasy food. Well, what do you expect if order fried Chinese dishes? And if you feel like losing some $$$, there are a few video poker machines for that too. It's like a mini casino in the middle of Portland, minus the hot waitress and the black jack tables. :-) Being the nephew of the owner doesn't hurt either. LOL

Rainbow Dragon is our neighbood Chinese restaurant. It's a tacky, hole-in-the-wall place, that could use a good makeover and a bucket of soapy water. But, I love their food. We usually order the #8 with pan-fried noodles, sweet and sour chicken, fried shrimp, egg flower soup and fried rice. They usually throw in egg rolls too, depending on how big our order is. Their crab puffs and bbq pork is great too. It's cheap, cheap, cheap (about $8 for dinner and $4 for lunch) and delicious. You get enough food for several meals. No MSG either! They have a full bar, although we haven't been in the lounge---it's mostly a lot of neighborhood drunks sipping cheap drinks!

  • Jp H.

Good food, but I wouldn't suggest ordering anything that's deep fried (spring rolls, pot stickers, etc)- it's served pretty greasy. But for everything else, the portions are ample, and taste good. It's not the best Chinese food we've ever had, but so far it's the best we've had in our area, and the price is hard to beat.

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Portland. This is my boyfriend's favorite place to eat (he's been a diner here since the early 90s) and he took me here when we first started dating. I've been hooked ever since. We live out of state now, but try to make it here whenever we visit Portland. Their Egg Drop soup is delicious and their Chicken Sub Gum is on point; we can't find any dishes elsewhere that can compare. Great to bring a large group or come with family. An awesome low-key/no frills Chinese restaurant, run by an incredibly sweet family.

Old school restaurant. Still cool (in a homey feel kinda way). Good cheap eats for Sunday lunch. Yummy Egg Flower Soup. I had the $6.00 lunch special. You choose 1 entre and it comes with a fried egg roll & fried rice. I chose kung pao chicken as my entre. I was asked how hot I wanted it and said, medium. Glad I did cuz it was on the edge of "lava" but was still full of fresh veggies and chicken. Very tasty. All our food came out super fast and super hot. Everyone loved their food and even had a little bit left over to take home. Not the greatest looking place inside but the food is good, cheap and on point. We have a teenager that loves this place and I imagine we'll be going through the menu from time to time.

It was not what I was expecting. The menu is very light on items (at least for lunch). I ordered the pork fried rice and it was not fresh pork. The edges were a bright red and the meat was a dark grey. I couldn't easily stick my fork into it. When I first tried my fork made a small dent in it. I was disgusted. HOWEVER the price for my boyfriend and I was less than $10. So that was good that we didn't pay that much for a not very good meal.

The portions are very big and I like their sweet and sour chicken, bbq pork and pork fried rice. I get it to go and tonight the bbq pork is very dry.

Favorite Chinese restaurant! My boyfriend and I come here a couple times a week. Their egg flour soup is the best we have ever had! Their service is amazing. It's fast and they are very polite. You can tell that they care about their customers.

  • Kathryn K.

Very large portions. It took them a while to take our order when we first arrived. We got the pot of tea and soups right after the order was taken. The main meal was ok but I do have to say the hot and sour soup was outstanding. I would go back just to order soup and an appetizer. Lots of left overs and it only cost 24 bucks for two people ordering one of the dinner specials.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
