(Below is an excerpt from the front cover of the Pied Cow menu) pied: parti-colored cow: the mature female cattle coffeehouse: In times of upheaval, revolutionary centres encouraging the interchange of ideas + usually generating liberal and radical opinion You can't find a coffee shop in Los Angeles that's a gigantic, gorgeous, Victorian house. I mean... here, it's hard to find a coffee place that isn't a chain in general. The Pied Cow gets 5 stars right away just for the building as far as I'm concerned. The Pied Cow is a sanctuary for me. I have to go there when I visit to remind myself that there are still places that are this rich in character. I like to sit back and eavesdrop on the conversations happening around me and I usually find myself in the middle of at least one philosophical/existential discussion. The place is conducive to gathering and exchanging ideas for long periods of time- that is the grand function of the coffeehouse. So anyway- say what you will about your occasional overpriced dish (they're dirt cheap compared to LA!!) or the one waiter you caught on a bad day (they're always gregarious and they're usually wearing vintage!)... if you don't appreciate the Pied Cow, consider yourself hard to please.

Interesting place for a Interesting Town. I always wanted to try hookah so i walk to Pied Cow Coffeehouse in a converted house with a nice outside patio where hookah takes place. The outside area is comfy and the decor was hanged pictures on tree's.It was like your in a 1930's gypsy caravel vibe to it,agreeing with Yelp User Heather C,the Waiters did have a 1930 Carine vibe to it. At first i thought it was my waiters regular duds (you never know in Portland) but found this is the theme after seeing more waiters. They did not have alto of Shesha flavors for hookah like Mint, vanilla and Double apple. I chose Double apple and a Lemonade to wet my whistle. The Best Lemonade i ever had and very good Shesha but the flavor was a little weak then i would of thought but over all good experience. The check seemed to take a long time to get but perhaps it's a mellow lounge but it was a little to slow paced for my City Sole,But I liked this place and i would come here again with friends.

Been here once before and had dessert. Came back again for dessert tonight and sat outside by the fire. I don't hookah and am older than most people that seem to frequent The Pied Cow. I do however enjoy the tea and dessert and the people watching and don't feel out of place by any means. I agree with some of the other yelpers on this place in that everything certainly does feel sticky. The bathroom was pretty gross as well. But, if you do enjoy hookah, or not and want a true Portlandia experience, you should go. Get dessert... the banana split is pretty good and so is the peanut butter chocolate dessert that is served in a tea cup.

I Came here for birthday dessert with my family, and was promptly ignored. We were literally the only customers inside. it's a seat yourself joint but all the tables were dirty and still had old dishes on them, so... We just sort of stood there until the boisterous employees came out of the kitchen (looking frustrated that we were standing there). "Um, it's a seat yourself place. Didn't you see the sign?" Says the server. "Is it a bus some other persons table kind of place?" I replied. After about 5 more minutes they had 2 small tables cleaned, which was awkward cause we were clearly a party of 5. We had already stood around feeling the persistent urge to ingest SOMETHING. So we got marionberry pie. It was pretty great! The crust was good too. And maybe they picked the berries, made the crust and baked it from scratch. It took almost 30min to get it. I don't want to complain too much, but... You know the saying,"simple as pie" or "easy as pie"? Well they messed it up, they brought some other kind for my brother,"because we ran out of marionberry." Cool, but maybe they should ask. We also requested no whip or ice cream and they added 2 scoops of ice cream to every plate. Charged us for extra ice cream and pie that we didn't really want. In the end, it's a great place for wild card pies, terrible service, tap water with no ice and hooka.

Have to be honest and say I really didn't enjoy my experience here. I've gone a few times and it failed to impress. Went for a birthday party at 7pm and hadn't had lunch that day. I was starving and was super disappointed to find they didn't really have any dinner items on the menu. I ordered their hummus and it only came with a few pieces of bread. The hummus was good though. Their sangria was really good however it seemed super expensive. We were sitting outside and we could smell something weird in the bushes. There also weren't even really lights or decor in the back. I wouldn't go here again with all the other choices on Belmont. It seems like a ton of people love the place though so I'm a bit confused.

Treated like we were homeless and loitering: My girlfriend and I were showing her best friend from out of town around Portland and were excited to show take her here. We sat down, waited almost 10 minutes before someone came to bring us a menu and when she did, she was rushing us for an order. We asked for a couple minutes to view the menu. When she came back, we still weren't ready so then another waitress came up to us and told us that "in order for you guys to stay here, you need to order because we're busy." We weren't acting like idiots, we weren't loud...we simply didn't know what we wanted to order. All three of us are successful professionals in the sales/service industry and understand that there is a way of treating people that you are hired to serve. The fact that "they were busy" was of no concern to us nor should it cause someone to treat us as if we were loitering. Thanks for welcoming our friend to Portland.

The Pied Cow is a nice coffeehouse with a gorgeous, sprawling hookah patio outside. Its products are good, but what really makes it stand out is the environment it creates for its patrons. Situated in and outside a beautiful Victorian house, the Pied Cow is ideally suited to hanging out on the patio on a summer's night, though I've even come here once or twice in cooler days. While it's more of a hookah lounge and coffee shop than a bar, you can also get beer and wine here, though I don't think they offer any hard liquor. The hookah here is conventional, but pretty good. My friends and I particularly like the rose flavor. I haven't seen them do anything like fill the bowl with juice or ice cubes or allow split heads. That doesn't bother me much. One thing that does get on my nerves, though, is their refusal to provide tongs or a lighter for the table. If you want to toast your coal or move it a little bit, you'll have to wait for your server to come by, unless you bring your own tongs and lighter. I really like how they sell beer by the pitcher. $15 for 60 oz microbrew pitchers is a pretty decent deal in this town. Particularly when it's Caldera IPA, which was quite hoppy, but smooth as all get out. I appreciate it when coffee shops also carry good beer--it gives you options, particularly for when you feel like a brew but don't want a bar's atmosphere. I haven't had any of their coffee drinks recently, so I can't review them here, but I recall one of my friends having one and liking it a fair bit some months back. Likewise, not having tried kava, I can't comment on it, though I know they have it. Food-wise, I've had the Mezza platter before, and it's decent. It's not the best Middle Eastern food I've had in Portland, but it's fine for noshing on with a group of friends. I wouldn't rely on their food to soak up the night's booze, though--it's just not hearty enough. Atmosphere at the Pied Cow is top-notch. The courtyard is beautiful, with an eerie quality to it, as if some arcane rites take place here after hours. Tables range widely in size, with a good number of small and medium-sized ones and a central one that looks like it could 20 or more without difficulty. I definitely recommend sitting by the fire-pit, if you can. In the wintertime, it's heated, though I still wouldn't go here on a truly bitter night. The inside of the house, likewise, is quite lovely and cozy. The Pied Cow is my go-to for hookah in Southeast. It's got a fine product and an incredible atmosphere. Particularly with the summer nights being so warm, I can see myself coming back here frequently this summer.

I really want to like this place but the service disappoints each time. One time we waited thirty minutes for someone to take our order even though the place was nearly empty. We eventually just got up and left. More recently, it took forty minutes for us to get the check and this was after asking multiple times. This is not the place to go if you're in a hurry. One star is for a good menu and the other is for the cool atmosphere.

One time, it took our friend 45 minutes to get the soy milk she asked for. Another time, it took me 30 minutes to find our waitress so that we could ask for a check. Its inadequacies & lack of attentiveness aside, I love the Pied Cow. It's my favorite late-night spot for yummy desserts & coffees. And their hookah is lovely. Very fragrant & mild. & I adore the quirky wait-staff. They're so cool! Great place to kick it for a late-night gab fest or for settling that sweet-tooth craving. I come here for the sweets & stay for the low-key vibe & chill atmosphere.

I'm not really sure what to say as I have mixed reviews. If you enjoy hookah, this is a good place to go. I don't know if I'd get any of their food. There were stray cats running around, and it didn't look very sanitary. However, come here in the summer and sit outside with a nice drink and hookah = perfection.

  • Katherine C.

Had a great time here last night with my friends smoking the jasmine mint "hubbly bubbly". They also serve both Ace Pear Cider and Duchess sour beer! The outdoor section has fire torches spread out for warmth under big umbrellas to keep you dry. A great place to chill with your friends.

I'm sure this is a fun place with good desserts, but my first visit here wasn't so enjoyable. I loved the atmosphere and outside seating, but the food was disappointing. First of all, the place doesn't seem to have that great of coffee, which was a let down because I hoped for a coffee place. I got the cafe mocha, but it didn't taste that impressive, and worst of all they served it in a standard water glass, so the heat of the coffee made the glass so hot you couldn't even pick it up. What happened to a real coffee cup? That's part of what I was paying to be there for. I also got the homemade pecan pie, but it really didn't taste that great and didn't have the classic pecan pie buttery taste. And the crust wasn't crusty/crumbly, but rather chewy, so it wasn't edible. Maybe it was because I came at night and the pie had been sitting all day, which is understandable, but it shouldn't have been served. One awesome 'feature' was that they have a very well behaved beautiful cat that comes and sits next to you on the outside tables. I'm open to giving this place another try, but I was let down this time.

Love this place, beautiful old house, great outdoor seating, desserts and drinks are delicious and they have kava! One of my favorite stops.

I've come here on and off for years -- when I do come back, I have no idea why. The service is terrible! Do these waitresses not understand they're working for tips?? I don't demand excellent service, just someone who isn't rude to me and doesn't make me feel uncomfortable. There was a frizzy haired girl wearing a sack dress -- she looked like she'd just been electrocuted. I asked her a simple question about the menu and she gave me SUCH an attitude. I think the owner only hires wafer thin, socially awkward, "unique" girls. I understand the place has a certain vibe -- but please hire nicer people! The food is sub par -- the only reason to go is for the ambience, which is wonderful. They also have an adorable cat! Beware in the summer time, there are crab spiders everywhere outside.

Pied Cow does what it does well. We recommend them for that! They have parlayed a very small Queen Anne into a fine spot for high school students and others who are bent on discovering weird Portland and occupying it. Pied Cow is not an outlier in that only though, Portland West Coast yoga central is light on truly sublime dessert restaurants. The hummus plate is large with plenty of vegetables. The beer and wine selection is inexpensive. The quirky deserts, like the espresso over chocolate cake and ice cream, and the giant bowl with pie and brownies for a large group are fine and inexpensive too! Coffee drinks A-OK. They could improve the disconnect between the order taking staff and the order delivery to the table staff. The system depends on the customer knowing the official menu name of what they ordered when the server who also may not know the official menu name comes out with no idea and is "who ordered the _?" The outdoor area is ad hoc compared to say, the Tin Shed. Maybe that's just how it is with their hookah trade. The outdoor Christmas lights, peaked tea house tent and surrounding landscaping are romantic but seating and tables rustic. Good example of a quirky Portland business with inexpensive evening and late night-focused foods. Late, go, eat, drink, yum!

We just happened upon this place because it was so interesting from the outside. What a fun surprise! Jasmine flavored Hookah was great. The coffee was so yummy. They also have desserts, beer, and wine. We sat outside on the patio and it was so relaxing. Very chill vibe. Love all the fire pits. Our servers were very nice as well.

I really like the Pied Cow, however, our service this past time made us uncomfortable. We felt as if we were bothering our servers, which didn't make for the best experience. I will say that I absolutely love getting pie and tea and smoking hookah outside on the heated patio. A cat will visit you every so often when you're here, which is a plus in my opinion. I'll probably be back, just hoping for better service.

Great drinks and food. Marionberry pie is to die for. Nice ambience to catch up with a group of friends. However, it isn't a cafe you come to work or read, lighting is quite poor.

I'm not really a review writer, my text is usually confined to text messages and status updates wrought with grammatical and spelling errors. This place though. Dude go there. Its small on the inside, but the decor is really fun. My and a Supernatural cosplayer friend of mine hung out by a door-less closet that was filled with crazy things like mannequin parts and old toys it was really fun to look at everything. If you have more than a few people, I suggest hanging out in the huuuuuuuuuuge patio area. hey have hookah smoke going on out there which is a menu item so if you don't like smoke it won't be up your ally, but it was really spacious and has like, fire pit things plenty of seating. Now food. wow. ok, Food wise, we tried the cappuccino which was foamy and awesome and I wanted 4 more, they're regular drip coffee was fresh and they had sugar in the raw which i'm a fan of, the cheese fondue, man.. i just... wow. I will be back for the fondue ALONE! a huge serving of bread and veggies and apple chunks (we added the sausage which was also spectacular) and the amount of cheese was very substantial compared to places like the melting pot or simply fondue. letsee, what else... OH PIE!! we got the marrion berry pie with ice cream to share and it was pretty good, I've never had that flavor though so i didn't have anything to compare it too but yeah, totally good for my tastes. Ok, rambling complete. Thanks for the awesome time Pied Cow, and hope we didn't annoy you with our nerd talk and picture taking.

The two words I would use to sum up Pied Cow Coffeehouse are WEIRD and STICKY. Every surface seemed to have a goopy sort of residue on it, as though we were dining upon the remnants of all the patrons who had gone before us. The banana split we had was--all three in our party agreed--the best banana split we have ever had, anywhere. I have read the other Yelp reviews describing the abominable service, and I have to say, our service was excellent--prompt and attentive--but this may be due to the fact that we were the only people in the whole establishment. For a similarly campy, creepy-meets-hipster Wes Andersonesque atmosphere, try the far less weird and sticky Rimsky-Korsakoffee House.

Me and my friends always have a great time here. We always get one or two bottles of red wine, a variety of flavors of hookah, and chocolate fondue. You will not be disappointed.

I came to the Pied Cow primarily because they have a tortie cat like I do. Seriously. I did not read reviews.. I looked at photos. I met a friend here. The decor is cute and fun. The wait staff are very hip.. my waiter had a sense of humor and patience. I got a soy latte. My friend got a hummus platter type appetizer and a huge boat of brownie and ice cream. Looked delicious. I also got a sliver. from the cute benches. oh well... the risk you take when you leave the house.. right? I never saw the cat. :(

After catching a show we were desperate for coffee, and we ended up on the epic EPIC steps of this amazing looking place around midnight. The atmosphere is awesome here, and we really enjoyed the cheesecake. I'm so freaking jealous of you Portland for having this place.

  • McKenzie M.

This is the place my go-to place for meeting my best friend when we haven't seen each other in a long time. I like the tea selection and array of small bites and desserts. The paintings and furnishings of the restaurant make me feel like I'm going to see a fortune teller or get a tarot card reading. The chocolate fondue is fun for a small crowd. The ginger cake is fluffy. The chocolate peanut butter truffle in a mug is beyond decadent. The hummus and cheese plates come with a great assortment of vegetables and pita chips and crackers and such. The baked brie is delicious, but let's be honest, it's baked brie. Of course it's good. As for the drinks, I can only speak for the tea, but I haven't been disappointed with any that I've sampled so far. It's fun. It's a unique experience. Nothing on the menu is so delicious it will make your eyes roll back in your head, and if you sit outside you do have to contend with hookah and cigarette smoke, but there's something charming about this place that keeps convincing me to return.

Want a interesting experience? Go to The Pied Cow. They have pie. They have tea. They have hookah! They're Greek? This place is such an amazing mix of great stuff. The restaurant is inside such a cool house full of interesting things to look at. They have a great patio for the summer months and a heated patio for the winter ones. Definitely come here for a drink and some pie--you won't regret it!

The Pied Cow is one of my favorite leisure joints in Portland. If you like light alcohol, hookah, and palatable food in an awesome setting, you'll like this place. I'll start with what I don't go her for - food and drink. Their menu is fine, I've never had a bad experience with food. They do have a mean sangria that's good in the summertime. Now for what I DO go her for - hookah and ambiance. They're hookah menu is pretty well fleshed out, and their equipment is in good shape. I suggest going with some sort of mint combo, like vanilla mint. They even replace your coals for free when they go out. This is definitely a summer joint, and the ambiance during the warm months is FANTASTIC. Lights and foliage envelope you in a rustic cocoon of hipsterdom that's enjoyable even for the most uptight. Lines can be long in the summer, but the wait is always worth it.

Ever drank too much the night before when company came to visit? Want to still go out to show them a good time in Portland but can't look at alcohol? This is your place to spend a chill night. The patio is a must in the summer. Food wise, I ended up getting the garden salad, made it vegan and also split the the mezza platter with a friend. Hit the spot! Had a fruity tea (can't remember the name) but it went perfect with our mixed rose mint hookah flavor. The place got busy around 8pm-10pm but settled down after 10. The outside atmosphere was cool with lights and trees overhead with tiki torches around the perimeter. Super laid back. Great date night spot!

Another great stop my friends and I made in our 3-day whirlwind tour of Portland, and I'm so glad I got to experience this place! ~~AMBIANCE~~ Quirky, fun, lots of random decorations and knick knacks. Overall it's got an antique-y dark victorian house kind of feel, but then you have the random shrine with all sorts of Asian pieces and decoration and the outdoor seating area with a stone fountain that has what seems like red Kool-Aid bubbling out of it. ~~SERVICE~~ Fine! No complaints. It was pretty slow there when I went, about 4pm on a Sunday. ~~COST~~ Not bad, about $30 total for two hot drinks, a platter, and a dessert. Afternoon snacks for three. ~~FOOD~~ * Cardamom-Honey steamer - 4.5 stars (hot steamed milk w/ cardamom & honey. $4) This was delicious! I love cardamom and have never had it in milk, which had a smooth frothy texture. This made us all feel warm and cozy inside. * Mezza platter - 3.5 stars pic: yelp.com/biz_photos/pied… (hummus, tzatziki sauce, kalamata olives, feta cheese, fresh tomato & cucumber slices, hot chilies & pita bread. $11) A very large impressive plate of food! The bread was a little bit dry, but I liked that it was thick and fluffy. Both dips were delicious. And you get a LOT of feta! * Peanut Butter Truffle in a Teacup - 3.5 stars (a teacup full of dense truffle-like chocolate layered with peanut butter, topped w/ fresh whipped cream. $5.50) I just had to try this from all the reviews raving about it! It tasted like a giant Reese's in a fancy teacup. It's tasty, not necessarily really special/unique (except for just the intense amount of chocolate & peanut butter) - and just be ready to consume a lot!

The first time I had Pied Cow Coffeehouse was in 2006, when I was visiting Portland, and a friend and I stumbled upon it by accident. We fell in love with the ambiance and the decadent chocolate desserts and hot cocoa we ordered. When I visited Portland again in 2013, I decided to check Pied Cow again, and was surprised to find that the cute ambiance had not changed. We had a flaming banana chocolate dessert, which was pretty cool (I'm not a big banana fan, so that may be why I did not find it amazing).

  • William H.

I think the banana chocolate dessert we had was decent, not amazing. The ambiance is nice and I like the outdoor area--perfect for a good read or if one needs to work. The house is eclectic and the staff is friendly.

We were recommended to come here after our favorite Lebanese place was no longer offering hookah. We were skeptical but were incredibly excited upon arriving. The front door of the Victorian house was slightly spooky but also cool. The eclectic hostess had us sit outside to smoke hookah and we had a nice fire pit right next to us. The hookah was great- strawberry and mint- and just the right strength. We also got jasmine tea and a lemon, honey, ginger hot drink which all were incredible. The pricing is appropriate and the garden area has the right amount of unique artifacts and lighting for a really awesome experience. We loved it so much we came back the next day during the day.

Really, really nice Hookah patio. Excellent place to spend a summer afternoon. Their food and drink selection isn't mind-blowing, but pretty decent. They do a float with Young's Double Chocolate Stout that's delicious. Only problem is when they get swamped it can be difficult to track down a server. It's very laid back so don't be in a hurry.

The staff seems out of the house of the undead from game of thrones. They also seemed to be using fake accents which was uncomfortable. The gingerbread cake with ice cream is great, but I would not recommend the brownie boat or the chocolate fondue.

    (2)
  • Little T.

my friend and I both ordered the brownie boat and we were so excited when it came out. Cut up pieces of brownie tucked next to 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with fresh whipped cream. Alas, we both knew after the first bite that we should have ordered something else, maybe even gone somewhere else. my ice cream was 'icy' which means it's old or their freeze was set too high and made icicles in their ice cream. the brownie were dry and didn't seem fresh. We picked through the whip cream but for $7.00, i expected more. the waiter was nice and the restaurant had great atmosphere but how hard is it to have good quality brownies available. for gosh sake, Zupan is across the street. boo!

Pretty good service, but other then that I wasn't too happy with the food/drinks/hookah. The baklava reminded me of wet cat food, taste and smell... It literally took me back to my great grandmother feeding her old cat. Fond memory for sure, but not something I want to be reminded of through taste. My sangria was full of ice with apple slices and some lemon, typically it has more delicious fruits that actually make the drink flavorful, but this just tasted like red wine over ice. The hookah we ordered was supposed to be "double apple" and unfortunately I never really tasted any apple flavor at all. It just tasted kind of herbal. I have been there once before and really had a nice time, everything was pretty good and fun... But I think this place has gone a little down hill for me. I don't think I will be returning.

The Pied Cow is my favorite coffeehouse in all of Portland! It's an old home-turned-cafe that I love to bring friends who can appreciate the counter-cultural feel and the unique-ness of the atmosphere. That being said, The Pied Cow may not be for everyone. However, if you're looking for a true Belmont/Hawthorne experience, look no further! The warm marionberry pie with cold vanilla ice cream melting over it is to die for, as well as the honey-lavender steamer (the perfect bedtime treat!) If you're looking for something a little salty, the heafty portion of curried lentil dip is fantastic, and the salami cheese platter will have you taking enough leftovers home that you'll think you've come from a grocery store. Also, The Pied Cow is one of the only places I've found that sells SeaDog Raspberry Ale - one of my favorite beers with a very distinct raspberry flavor! On top of all of this, they're open late! The only downsides are the sometimes less than friendly staff. I've never had an issue myself (and have been coming here for about 6 years) but I have heard stories. Also, you must be 21 to enjoy their hookah (which is overpriced). The Pied Cow is definitely worth your time if you're looking for that little gem of Portland spirit!

Ah, yes. High school chats over a chai milkshake and a pack of menthols. We've all been there. There's places like this in every city. I wanted to like this place because it's close and somewhat cozy, but it was too "Hey man, we're funky and chill and don't really believe in good service." Also overpriced. Also the servers were extremely...drowsy. So I guess if you're seventeen and want to quote Nietzsche all night, you should be fine. The hookahs smelled nice though.

Inside an old Victorian house, Pied Cow is the penultimate of hip and awesomeness that embodies Portland. It quickly became one of my regular hangouts toward the end of high school when my friends discovered hookah, and the fact that Pied Cow definitely offered superior shisha and ambiance. Speaking of the atmosphere, sit indoors and look at eclectic decorations of bright paintings and a Hindi-inspired shrine, or outside with a whimsical and romantic/bohemian lantern-laden courtyard with Persian rugs on the ground. Recently, they've put in a covered porch with heat lamps, so you can sit outside without having to brave the weather. This awesome place also boasts some pretty good nibbles: The hummus plate is good, and Bernadette's Brownie Boat gives Baskin & Robbin's a run for their money. Try the Mexican Mocha, with hand-ground Mexican chocolate for a rich treat, or the hot mulled wine for something a little more European. One time my friends tried the Kava...not recommended...it tastes like dirt. But in all honesty, I highly recommend this late-night awesome Belmont mainstay!

    v. delicious brownie sundae but really shotty service. sat in the semi-dark for 30 minutes before my gestures were noticed. other than that, i'd go back, but sit closer to the light/the server.

I really like this old house. I really like the creeky chairs and the dark lighting. I really like the ambiance and the yummie teas and the outside seating. The bathroom is clean and cute and I really like the overall feel to this place. Appetizers were reasonably priced, we got lots of bread with balsamic vinegar and oil for like 3 bucks and we enjoyed that with our tea and they made room for us when a couple more of our friends showed up. The kava wasn't good though, they must use a powder and not the root because my lips didn't get numb and tingly from drinking it like the kava at Townsends on Alberta. Even though I like this place and next time I want to go outside for the hookah. :D

Kind over overpriced for mediocre food. The best features of this place are the distinctive decour and patrons. The experience was very enjoyable, however that was primarily due to the company I kept for this meal as well as enjoying the art and scenerey. The meal was nothing to write home about, and was pretty much completely unmemorable.

I would have gone for 3 stars, but the memory of many a night in highschool that ended up here pushed it up a level. I mean - nowadays I really only like it on sunny afternoons and off-nights. Weekends fill the place up with youngsters. And I've never liked it for the food, obviously, but more for the way the place is put together. The back patio is shady and easy to chat in. Really though, as much as I want to be annoyed...places like this DO have to exist for the younger version of me. So I'm glad that it does, and that they're very good at what they do. Nothing wrong with that.

Delicious food and open late, a nice hangout spot that's better then a bar.

  • Katie W.

The coffee was good but it was damn near impossible to get enough milk and sugar to get me through the mass amounts of the stuff that I drank. The decoration was super cool. However... there was not one single thing on the food menu that I would willingly put into my mouth.

The atmosphere, beer, coffee and hookah selection are awesome! Inside, the house is quaintly decorated and comfortable, and the heated patio and gardens outside give everything a great vibe. If you're looking for a relaxed atmosphere to hang out and drink some great imported beers or a really good cup of coffee, this is it. Even better, you can bring your doggers.

My go-to place as a high schooler. We couldn't go to bars, so we'd waste time at the coffeehouse. Many a long conversations about who knows what occurred on these very grounds. Their desserts are awesome, the sorbets, the ice cream desserts, very good. One thing that wasn't my cup of tea (literally) was the Kava. Just a little weird. Place is so quaint, cozy, and brings back some memories. check it out.

The place is rustic, welcoming and has really good qi or chi. This is one of my favorite places to relax on a nice sunny day. The place just has the right energy. I've never been served by an inattentive person here. It is the type of service that million dollar investment restaurants would love to say they have. The food and coffee are always wonderful. Espresso, yummy sweet flavorful with wonderful aroma that remains in your mouth. Not over-roasted bitter crap served at those places where they dream about how they will pile bucks to the stars. No my friend, this is good coffee here. I highly recommend this place for a snack and a drink. One warning: Most of their appetizers are large portions, this means that if you plan to eat a full meal soon, your only fooling yourself.

Great place. Situated in a good neighborhood, great for mixed-age people (i.e. when one person's under 21 and the other people want to enjoy a beer). They also have hookahs and a heated patio. I love the kava preparation! The only problems with this place is that the service is so unobtrusive to be non-existent if you don't want to poke your head into the kitchen to order. But if you're down with that, then it's a great venue for a long sit!

  • kelly s.

The desert is awesome, the romantic old school house with gravel bench garden for smoking hookahs is great, but the service here sucks the whip cream right out of the can. They all act like they just go done watching "Kids" the movie and then trying to re-enact it before serving you a meal, have been here dozens of time, somehow serving pie always seems like re-inventing the wheel, and for 18 bucks, their hookahs are always broken and f-d up. If I wasn't addicted to the pie and espresso drinks, I would would have given them 2 stars

  • Michelle A.

I really enjoy this spot! The service can be very hit or miss, but the desserts are to-die-for. Most especially anything warm, like the warm ginger cake or the warmed brownie with ice cream. Dang, my mouth is watering already...oh yum. There is a fine selection of snacks, but mostly I'd come here for the tea, coffee and desserts. I believe there is a small listing of wines and beers as well. I love that Pied Cow is open so late; it's a great alternative to the bar for night owls who don't drink or drink lightly. It's also a fun relaxed date spot. The outdoor seating in the summertime is heavenly and the hookah smells so tasty it almost makes me rethink my non-smoking ways. In the winter it can be drafty. The house is so small that one bad customer can make the experience less than pleasant. I would recommend coming with a friend; it's not the place to come and pound out your novel alone.

    1) Hooka 2) Sangria 3) Outdoor seating Doesn't get much better. Has to be the best place Belmont has to offer (besides Wonderland).

I really hate to leave a review based on a situation like the one we had tonight, but given its severity, I feel people should know how awfully we were treated by the manager/proprietor (?)-- I'm talking about the young Asian man who's always there. Before I proceed, let me also note that the inside of this place has a sour smell, like it's been cleaned with vinegar and not properly rinsed. It always catches me off guard but I've sat outside the last couple of times, so it didn't interfere with the experience. Ok, now on with the situation...we went there to order hookah, and sat outside on the patio. We also asked for some lemon wedges for the water..an extra request, but we're paying customers and it's nothing extravagant. We order vanilla/jasmine tobacco for our hookah since it'd been recommended by the server on a previous visit/was really good. Hookah comes, I taste it first and realize it tastes funny but don't say anything and let the others who'd never tried it before have a try first. The next person tries it and immediately notices something wrong.. Then the third person tries it and says how it tastes burnt/like charcoal. Since I noticed it too we decided to let management know and to see if we could change the flavor. Also, at $15-16 a bowl (a bit of a rip off given that it can be found for only $4 in cities like NY) we figured we should be getting what we pay for, which is a "fresh" tasting bowl of sheeshah, regardless of the particular flavor. This stuff clearly did not taste fresh. So we get the mgr, he comes down and samples it himself and basically proclaims us liars. His first argument was that he could not recreate the flavor I'd tried before. Then when we said it was more than just a matter of flavor, but that the stuff actually tasted bad, he refused to hear us and essentially told us it was in all THREE of our heads and that we weren't the type of customers he wanted there anyway (ordering hookah and lemon wedges), and then told us never to come back again. Talk about customer service. This guy should not be operating a business and should probably find a job where accommodating customers is not an integral part of the job. When we questioned him further about his statments, he went on to say that the type of people he wanted were ones who come inside and order and have this ideal type of experience... what that is, I'm not sure. Since they offer hookah and it's only to be smoked outside, I'm not sure how his whole vision lines up? Why bother having hookah if you want people to come in and langor? Again, I don't think this is the business for him. I've had several other interactions with him before and they've all been pleasant, but I guess since I never had a problem, there was no reason for things to be bad. Clearly this guy can't handle criticism or customer dissatisfaction. Again, when you're running a business and you have PAYING customers, you're kind of obliged to hear them out when something's bad. Otherwise, why are you in business? It'd be one thing if we just didn't like the flavor but the stuff was ill-tasting and when confronted he chose to badger us instead of take responsiblity and on top of that, threaten us with "never come back". Pretty crazy stuff.

In my opinion, there are few things more peaceful than going to the Pied Cow with a friend on a rainy day and sharing a hookah and tea in the heated patio. The inside is nice and cozy too. No wifi though. Otherwise I'd move in.

Probably the worst place I have ever been to. I was visiting from California only to find that this place was a waste of my time and money. The food is overpriced, the service was by far the worst I have ever gotten in my life, we waited around a lot and our server was really pretentious, awkward and rude. All the food tasted old like it has been sitting for a few days. Portland has tons of other better cafes and coffee shops, I would skip this one for sure.

Oh, peanut butter cup in a teacup, how I love you. Every time I go to this little converted Victorian house on Belmont I get the peanut butter cup with its tiny dessert spoon and o.d. on chocolate. The couches and shabby chic interior make this an awesome date spot. Two interior details of note: A portrait of a young woman in the sitting room that looks like she might lean out and tell you cute secrets, and a ship mural in the bathroom with embedded blinking lights. Quirky, definitely. Outside the Pied Cow has a romantic yard with tables strewn about and white Christmas lights strung in the bushes. The whole place feels like a bohemian Alice in Wonderland tea party. They used to serve hookas, but I'm not sure if they still do. Also, be prepared for really, really slow service outside.

cute little place, nice staff but they forget ya...it was so quiet and when the music was turned off it was a bit strange...good coffee though and nice little place on a rainy day to chill with a friend...the hazelnut brie was GOOD...cappuccino all foam but the mocha was to die for - good n' strong with not too much chocolate...yum. while i'm a NE girl, if i'm ever wayyy over in SE i'll be back :)

Serves food, beer, tea, coffee and hookah. Hookahs price is a bit much($16) for the size of bowl and the coals are the "insta-lite" kind which typically add a slight taste to the flavor of the hookah. The water pipes all seem to be used for any flavor (no reserved hookahs for mint or apple) so that is a downer (as apple hookahs are usually only reserved for strictly apple flavors to keep the flavor of apple strong). The outdoor setup of this place is very nice, lit by tiki torches and string lights. Would imagine it would get a little cold at nights as I see no heat lamps set up. Staff seems friendly enough, looks as though hookahs only get/need 1 coal as they are large coals (about the size of the bowl) and typical customers seem pleasant. Pros: nice atmosphere, friendly people Cons: pricey hookahs, small bowls, insta-coals, mixed flavors.

I used to go to this place years back. The outside area looks like it's seen better days and the inside seems like it got kinda *weirder* but overall, the ambiance is pretty laid back and comfortable. We came here for dessert and coffee and weren't disappointed. Service was alright, but we're low maintenance. We'll be back when the sun is out and we can sit outside in the dry garden.

Yay Pied Cow! Always a great hangout in SE. There are more cool coffee places in Portland than you can throw a stick at, but everyone knows Pied Cow. I only wish the rest of the world would take it as an example, and stop opening glossy, sterile, coffee shops that resemble dentist offices. Furniture does not have to match, people! It's better if it doesn't! Sorry, I digress.

Lemme tell ya. I don't smoke. At all. So it was with a bit of hesitation that I try the hookah here. However, it wasn't bad at all. Plus it was flavored so that helped, except when it was getting to be done and I got a sore throat. That wasn't the fault of Pied Cow of course. I do recommend the place if you want something "funky" or whatever you kids call it these days.

I positively love this place. It is wonderful to come here with friends or even on a date. The ambiance is fantastic, everything seems so cozy and laid back. The coffee is delicious plus you have an array of foods to try. I highly recommend any of the soups or desserts. Everything is reasonably priced as well! Hookah and kava are available here as well (I have not tried any hookah stuff but the kava is interesting. If you like the taste of dirt, give it a shot). If you go during the warmer months it is worth the wait to get seated outside! There are tea lights and candles with mismatched tables and chairs to make you feel at home. I have been here several times with different waiters each time so the service is really hit or miss.

So, honestly, I'd give this place, at this point, a 3 1/2 star rating. Yay! I AM a fan, kind of...but... eh. I have some complaints. First the good stuff: 1) The location. I love Belmont. I dig the Victorian house that Pied Cow calls home. 2) The patio. I love sitting outside when possible. 3) The food, as I remember, isn't horrid. 4) The prices aren't awful either. 5) I know there are more good things, because I used to frequent this place. 6) If you dig the hookah, shazam! Complaints: 1) The staff. I down Portland service when called for, and this place could be one of the worst 2) The staff. Some of the ladies (is it because I share the same equipment?) are truly the snarky of the snarky. Just because I don't paint on day-glo clothes and prance around with clip on neon hair...doesn't mean I shouldn't get served. Just saying. 3) The staff. I've had better times w/ the males, but still... 20 minutes for a glass of wine. If they aren't stomping the grapes to order, I don't care to hear the excuses. 4) You know the drill. I have had to chase down the "employees" to pay. I mean, if they don't want my three or six dollars, so be it, but let me know so I can GO. So, it sounds like I hate the place. I don't. I just don't go anymore and that sucks. If they fired all of them and made an effort for decent service, I'd go back...until then........ sorry Pied Cow, I really did dig you quite a bit.

very interesting experience. We got a hookah which was not at all what i expected, super mellow, not like smoking at all, had it on the patio which was quite romantic. the tea was very good as well, didn't try any food. service left a bit to be desired. I had to go inside to find the waiter to pay. Aside fro that a very enjoyable experience that i would recommend to anyone.

Hookah, desserts, cheese plates, the place is near perfect. The vibe is super laid back, a quintessential Portland destination. The hookah was nice and thick (we ordered watermelon), the desserts were sweet and primed to perfection, and the outdoor patio is unmatched. The only reason I gave it four stars is because our server pressured us to go while immersed in a game of Settlers of Catan. I see it from his perspective and I don't blame him, but if a place is so crowded that they have to pressure their customers then it's not perfect.

so upon hearing about this place it sounded like a cafe utopia.... cafe in a victorian style house you say?.....what more could i ask for being the type who dies for a good coffeehouse where the vibe is good and you can draw in your sketchbook and write in your journal for hours. unfortunately my expectations were tooooooo high....the experience was kinda strange i walked to the front door and saw a "wait to be seated" sign and instantly thought "oh lord......." all i wanted was coffee but got the hungries from walking all that long way. I ordered the cheapest food item on the menu...the bread...and it was pretty fancy scmancy i must say.......i ordered the coffee and had to wait in 20 minute incriments to get refils.... i had to wait even longer to check out and eventually got up myself to pay....which may just be the way this particular place works....but shit... are you or arent you a sit down place or not pied cow!? one waiter was a so so nice....while the other was slighty pretentious and kind of uninviting. .........so........this is a great place for a date...they have some fancy items on their menu that im sure taste great however....as a hangout spot...a place to draw/read/relax....no way...its just awkward and you will stand out....order some kinda orderve..come in for a good meal. smoke some hookah.get some pie...get up to pay...and then get out and go to muddy waters next door to finish the day off.

I like this place. It's so cute. They have outdoor seating and also heated tent seating. They allow dogs outside and even have a menu for dogs including non-alcoholic beer in a bowl. They have food, but mostly just appetizer type stuff. Good beer selection. Great staff. Hookahs.

  • Jamie D.

Although a very charming place aesthetically, I was disappointed in the service, which was horrendous. The outside patio had people smoking hookah and eating appetizers, but the inside was nearly completely empty, yet it took forever for someone to even come and acknowledge our presence. I ordered a chai latte, and they served it to me in a beer pint glass. It was too hot to hold. And when we finally got the waitress's attention and told her it was too hot, she didn't even offer to bring me another cup or anything. She took a napkin and wrapped it around the glass and said, "See? You're supposed to hold it like this." So I can't really tell you how delicious the desserts are (which my local friend said are really great), but I will say that atmosphere has the power to make or break an experience, and the lack of friendliness or helpfulness there wouldn't bring me back for a second round.

This is one of my favorite dessert/coffee places to go to in Portland, especially on a warm summer night. It is a little old house and kind of reminds me of Rimsky's on the inside. They have an outdoor seating area with a nice ambiance and also offer hookahs for those that are into that sort of thing. I would recommend sitting outside if you can and the weather is nice. In the winter they have a small covered heated area on the patio if you really want to sit outside, but it is probably better to sit inside when the weather is a little cold. They have the BEST peanut butter cup truffle. I am a huge peanut butter fan, so this is most definitely one of my favorites here. They have many other great desserts as well and are decently priced. They also offer beer, but no liquor. This is a great place to go on a date or out with friends. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait, but I think its worth it. I love you Pied Cow! I'll be seeing you real soon.

I love this place. The little house is adorable, the decor is fun and eclectic, and the staff is great. I think this is one of the only places left that still has huka...which by the way is excellent! The menu is quite diverse with great snacks and delicious desserts. If you have never been to Pied Cow it is a Portland must!

  • Cath C.

Pied Cow is an eclectic place that serves wonderful, unique desserts as well good as good espresso drinks and hookah pipe experiences. The atmosphere is relaxed. You will find a mix of people (customers and staff). The restaurant is an old house and it has a very cool covered patio. If you haven't had the chance to go then definitely check it out! In the heart of Belmont it is well worth a visit. I have yet to try the hookahs but they look fun!

A true original, this isn't your typical java joint. Located in a rambling and beautifully-renovated Victorian home in the hippie-holdover Southeast neighborhood, it serves some of the best coffee in town, in an ambiance that makes you feel like you're visiting friends. The interior decor ranges from traditional seating arrangements in one room to bean bags and low tables in another. But this is a place you want to vist on a sunny day or mild evening, because all the fun is to be found outside, a Bohemian open-air living room with mismatched vintage tables and chairs sitting on Oriental rugs strewn about the lawn. After dark, lights strung among the trees and candles provide a romantic atmosphere. Delicious desserts include French silk pie, six-layer chocolate cake, and an array of pastries, and they also have wine and beer. Who needs Starbucks with imaginative charm like this?

This place is cool. So cool that the bathroom has a plug-in oil painting and the waiters (could you call them that? more like "the guys who hang out in the kitchen") come around only every ten minutes, or about when they feel like it. But it's in Portland, so of course it's not too cool that you won't be welcome. The menu is laid-back and hilarious. The interior is cosy, funky, and middle-Eastern in theme (like the menu). Five of us lounged on cushion-covered benches in the corner, starting with warm tea, and then filling up on all sorts of really good hummus plates, salads, and sandwiches. The coffee is good, but one of the desserts we had (the "If You Dare" chocolate cake) was really dry and tasted like it came out of a box. Did that stop me from finishing it off for the group? Hell no. (This says more about me, coffee, and chocolate than anything else, but that's another story.) Pied Cow is perfect for a tete-a-tete with a friend or a small group.

Some friends took me here when I cam back for a visit and I really liked it. We sat in the garden and drank tea and smoked a hookah and caught up on old times when I used to reside in P-town. Miss it so much and had such a fab time that night!

The back patio/enchanted forest is such a great escape from the real world, kind of like a Jurassic Park of coffeehouses. But don't pass up the chance to wander around inside the super funky house where all the yummy goodness gets put together -- no big meals, just great apps/small plates and desserts. It's a great excuse to slowly make a few orders and lounge around, kick back with your friends, and sip a beer or coffee, depending where you want the day to go.

I still don't get why people flock here. The service is primordial and the food is what you can get from the snack aisle of any grocery store. I suppose it's for the novelty of the hookahs that brings back the crowd. You could, basically, get the same effect by chilling out in a friend's back yard. Yawn.

If you like that weird, quirky, Portland vibe, then definitely get coffee here. The place wasn't anything special, the wait staff was your typical Portland-I-could-care-less types. Coffee was delicious though but it just wasn't my scene.

I went here over the summer with a group of friends to celebrate my friend moving. When we first started ordering the waitresses seemed fine, they brought us our first round of appetizers and my friends and I chatted for awhile. The wine was not cooked out of our fondue all the way and we wanted to bring it to their attention so we could get a little less boozy tasting hot cheese. Then we waited for awhile for the waitresses to come back out, like ten minutes. They never came to check in us so one of us had to actually go inside and fetch a waitress. We were surprised to see them all sitting around inside talking. She gave us a lot of attitude when we were trying to order more food. We asked if they could cook out the alcohol better in the dessert fondue, to which she replied that she didn't think we could order fondue because they cook it with alcohol... Yes we are under aged, but I was baffled that she didn't know that you cook out the alcohol when you make fondue... I told her this and she seemed very annoyed. She kept pacing and tapping her foot like we were boring her, very unprofessional. Our dessert was brought out, the alcohol was still not cooked out well enough and we just gave up. Nobody came to check on us again. We waited for awhile and eventually one of us had to go fetch a waitress again. She came back with all of our food on one check when some of us had ordered separately and instead of fixing it herself, she tried to make us fix it by having to pay back one another. She over charged us by about 20$ and when we told her we were very disappointed in the food and the service she said, "well I knew you wouldn't tip me anyway since you're teenagers." Good service should never be determined by whether or not the customer looks like they will tip you well firstly, and what ever happened to the customer is always right! Honestly I went out of my way to write this terrible review because it was the worst dining experience I have ever had. I would never go back ever again... I should have told their manager about my terrible experience and then just left so the waitress had to pay for the large party check.

I had totally forgotten about this place until earlier this week when a friend invited me over for a drink and a snack. Once there, my memory was refreshed about what a little gem this place is! The back patio is really expansive and has a great vibe after the sun goes down with lots of bamboo, candles, and torch lighting. The menu offers up a lot of different options including snacks, sweets, tea, spirits, and hookah! Our server Kya was great! She was extremely friendly and attentive with a lot of charm. Definitely a spot to check out for a low key enjoyable evening out with friends.

This is my favorite haunt in Portland. Hipsters avoid it because apparently there is a phantom air of pretentiousness, which I can only ascribe to their very absence. Good riddance. There is no Pabst here. It is a salon in the original sense. The Cow is a place I go to when I need psychic breathing room. I come here with friends for inspiring conversation. Being in a dim and dreamy place helps us focus on that. People have reviewed this type of behavior as "high school", well, I've been doing it for my entire adult life, so try again. The waitstaff are real people. They aren't "the help". I've gotten to know them all, at least on "familiar face" basis, and I've never ever had any complaint about them. If you have a problem with the service, you more than likely just generally have a problem. I come here with the understanding that I am being invited into someone's home. The music played inside feels curated to match the vibe, probably whatever the kitchen wants to hear. Expect psych/ krautrock, old timey scratchy records, 60's Spector/ girl groups, and 80's underground at a reasonable volume. If you are visiting the neighborhood or just want to fill a night with friends and pleasantries, ***here is my ideal night on this block*** (this routine takes 4-6 hours): Go to Khun Pic's Bahn Thai promptly at 6 (they fill up fast). It is on the other side of the street, up a block or two, completely covered in brambles. They are also real people so beware if that rubs you the wrong way. Again, it is someone's home, and it's just as intimate, so show respect. They take an hour to bring you food because it's a husband and a wife and a stove. When you are done, walk over to the Cow for coffee and dessert, or hookah and a beer. My friends get a bowl of kava to share. I get a cardamom steamer with soy milk and sometimes pecan pie with ice cream, and maybe an Old Rasputin. The hummus plate is good for sharing if you aren't totally stuffed. We sit there and talk for 1-3 hours and leave around 11 or 12 to carry the night on elsewhere. You know, like what you do at a coffee house. OH if you opt to sit outside, try to find Clutz, the Cow's house cat. He'll plop on your lap and purr for hours if you let him. He makes drinks and merriment that much more pleasurable. In the end, you either get this place or you don't. Regardless, please appreciate the effort.

I've gone here on & off over the years for friend meet ups and just to reconnect. I do like the eclectic decor. The music was/is all over the board. The staff is generally attentive and the food is generally good.

Pied Cow is one of my all-time favorite places to go with someone. I've only been there in colder weather and can't wait until it's warmer to visit under the fairy lights and pet the cat that likes to hang around outside. One thing that is really incredible is their spiced/mulled wine -- it's perfect for a cold night, so tasty, warm and generous with a gorgeous display fruit. I give them a four just because they could have some more vegan food available, but the atmosphere and drinks are the things that keep me coming back & loving it. The staff is quite unique and friendly too.

Stopped in for a beer and some hookah. Interesting beer list, and decently priced. Some others got a hummus plate and it was pretty huge. The hookah was pretty pricey, but the patio is still a pretty cool place to hang out. I'm pretty sure I'll be back.

I didn't have a great experience, I'll be honest. Here are my three chief complaints: - It's a shame they didn't offer a few more alcoholic options - a nice hot cup of spanish coffee would've been nice with the brownies and icecream. - The rules regarding number of credit cards used to pay are annoying. - The service was a little spotty. The deserts were pretty good, I mean, nothing to complain about as far as taste was concerned... maybe it was a fluke, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it could've been much much better. I'd give them a second try sometime, for fairness' sake.

The place itself is in a old victorian house, decorated to the tee. Right on Belmont. Very quirky place, ambiance is great, super Belmont hipster vibe. I am pretty sure all staff is required to have an accent to work there, because I haven't met one that does not..but it just makes the experience. Solid place for late night coffee, or dessert. My best friend and I love the brownie boat on the menu. The Ginger Bread Cake is also a solid choice with either ice cream or whip cream on top. Open until midnight sunday-thurs, 1am on weekends.

I love this place! It's got charm oozing out of every nook and cranny. It's a great date night spot for some tasty dessert. The backyard patio is pretty charming as well. Service can be a little slow at times, but honestly, it doesn't bother me here because everything I've tried has been delicious and the waitstaff is so friendly. Highly recommend this for anyone looking for a charming, friendly place with a lot of unique Portland quirk.

Good dessert and 21+ only hookah. This would get 4 stars but the service is so slow...whether you're on the patio or in the actual coffeehouse. I do have to say...this place is weird...like haunted house weird. We came here over the weekend and there was creepy circus music playing haha...all dark and weird. People are calling it "fairy tale like" I prefer creepy.

I had a exceptionally good cheese plate there. Nice decore. Fun place to be. The chairs are a little uncomfortable though, no biggie.

Had a great cup of tea here in the outside garden area, alongside a piece of pretty gross (overpriced) cherry pie. The atmosphere is really cute but the waitstaff added a weird, annoyed air to the place. Seems like it'd be a fun place to hookah, and maybe if you're there with a big group, the servers won't be as distracting. There are so many better (and cheaper) places to eat nearby though so skip the food and just go for bevs and/or hookah.

Food and tea was really good! The atmosphere was super cute and trendy. The service tho, was very slow and we were forgotten about multiple times.

If you read this, DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! The worst and most rudest service we ever had! I totally get it if you don't smile or say Hi to your costumers. We all have been in one of those days. However, being rude to costumers who are begging for your paid service, that's way too much! We got there and sat on the patio. 20 mins later our waitress came take our orders...etc I'm a hookah smoker and I have been to many hookah bars. Don't even dare to ask for charcoal. The guy who we asked almost killed me when I did. "WE KNOW when to bring you charcoal", he said. OK, you pay $17 (everywhere else is much cheaper) and you are on your own. 10 Mins later, I had to go inside (you need something, you come to us) and asked him nicely: Can I please get some charcoal? He came to us with a lighter and a fast burning charcoal (the worst type for hookah). He burnt it with his lighter and left it burning on the top of hookah! NOBODY DOES THAT! First, It will kill you. Second, It will totally ruin the hookah and its flavor. I asked him to leave take it from the top and leave it beside until it gets red and burnt. "No" he said while he was leaving. I was shocked. I literally have never met anyone that rude in my entire life. Even if we were to paid $17 to be smoking there, we wouldn't be treated like that! I went inside, paid and left. That was the only time I saw him smiling. I do think he has some serious mental issues. No kidding.

Pied Cow is very unique and has one of the best outdoor seating areas in Portland. The inside of the house is love-or-hate. It's a little much for me sometimes, but the outside area is freaking awesome! I like to bring a cigar and a book here and sip on one of their coffee drinks. Last time I was there two cats roam around outside too, which I thought was really cool. I really want to start coming here at night. It lights up really neat at night. Also, don't be misled by the word "coffeehouse"- they serve booze here too and food AND Hookah! They actually have a very unique and interesting menu. Also, the staff has always been super friendly and inviting. a macabre old Victorian house a huge outdoor seating area unique coffee, booze, food, and hookah menu close proximity to other amazing bars, restaurants, etc. What is there NOT to like about this place? Easy 5 stars. One of my favorite places to relax outdoors at. Quintessential Portland right here.

This is one of my favorite spots to take friends who are visiting from out of town, or just to relax with a friend or my boyfriend. We always sit outside, which is quite large and garden-like. My recommendation is to enjoy some beers or wine while smoking a mango hookah, then sharing the cheesy fondue or one of their decadent desserts. The menu is super vegetarian-friendly and vast. Each time I visit I find that I'm so relaxed and enjoying myself that the time just flies by. Its easy to spend a few hours here! Check it out- you will not be disappointed!

I never planned on coming back after the way we were treated last time but i had a friend from out of town and we wanted some sweets around 10:30pm. First off their firepit wasnt lit and not all of the heaters were on so it was pretty miserable and cold we asked if they would change that and were blown off. After about 30 mins of no service and hanging out with some cat that was pretty great i went inside to ask for 2 black coffees and she said one min so i waited 15 mins goes by and another employee came out of the kitchen and i addressed her, the reply was Im not a server its not my job and walked off I was a little offended so 45 mins in we finally get our like warm brie and coldish coffee. The sad thing is the other groups of people around us were not getting served either. Honestly this place is the worst and the employees treat customers horrible but they are always on top about coming back to get the check even though we were two shakes from leaving without paying since no one would help us. I wish there was a negative rating. Seriously management needs to do some serious changing maybe fire the victorian ghost that too good to help customers

The food, drinks, and hookah are all delicious and amazing! My one complaint (and it's a major one) is that the service out on the patio is excruciatingly slow. I like to always give servers the benefit of the doubt since I /know/ it's a harrying whirlwind of a job, but... I've sat with an empty glass for upwards of a half hour with no sight of anybody else, even when there are all of two occupied tables in the entire joint. Is there a bell you can ring to get someone's attention inside? I know I must sound impatient and snotty, but my knees and ankles aren't that great and it's easier for me to get to the patio and stay there than to go up the front stairs into the house portion of it (which is a shame because the interior is LOVELY). I will say that every server I've ever had here has had a lovely attitude and been accommodating! I just wish they came around more often.

Ok, admit it, I have a certain fondness for this overpriced hippie hipster hangout in my old hood. It's not a kid place though. It's a grownups going to do hookah/kava or watch people ( this is us) doing that. I like the espresso and the pie and the chocolate cake just fine. Not GREAT mind you, but ok. If people are young and moving into the hood I would encourage them to check it out. It's a great place to play scrabble and have cofffee like my hubby and I used to do. It hasn't changed, not a whit.

I am so glad this place stays open late on Saturdays. After suffering the heat all day before heading to Pioneer Place to spend some gift cards, my friends and I decided some nummy sweets in the nice cool evening air of the Pied Cow lawn was just what we needed. We got there at about 1130 pm . The place was rather crowded as I figured it would be with all but one table of customers choosing to sit outside. The seating in house was a serious no go due to the still horrid heat. We only had to wait about fifteen minuets for a table and the wait staff was much faster than I had figured they would be considering the number of customers. The black and tan sundae with an iced latte for me, the cheese cake for my two girlfriends. The ice cream and latter were delish as was the cheese cake my friends had. By 1215 or a good deal of the rush was done and most of the tables were empty. We sat around chatting and relaxing with the waitress coming by to refill our waters and made no attempt to rush us out. The Pied Cow, fantastic as always!

oh pied cow..so many young highschool friday nights spent here being "cool" I haven't gone back in literally years but on a muggy day after walking across the bridge from NW to the avalon theater, after our movie we decided we deserved a little rest in the garden with pecan pie. mmmm pie. ah....so many memories, and it's still awesome. and chill and there was pretty much the coolest little kid playing in the garden. wildly entertaining. i'm not sure about full meals but for a very decent Moroccan mint tea iced and hot, and a very delicious pecan pie ala mode.

Had to wait for nearly 20 min to get a seat even though there were open tables. Then We sat around for another 20+ min without a server talking to us. Eventually, someone came over, said hello like she was gonna take our order then just abruptly turned and walked away. So tired of awful service at that point we just got up and left. Can't speak to how the food was since we didn't even make it that far. Such fond memories of this place but sadly won't be going back after this horrible experience.

HOLY HIPSTER HAVEN BATMAN! If you're looking for a place to imbibe ice-cold bubbly brews, hot and frothy steamers, or fungus filled fermented drinks look no further! *Those descriptions may be off-putting, actual beverages are tastier than an angel's tears. Hidden away inside a converted old house, Pied Cow serves up a variety of savory and sweet plates to accompany your tastebuds while you gulp down unique drinks! Surround yourself with the cozy ambiance of bizarre black velvet art, as well as a sculptural collection that could only have been compiled by the mentally insane. A botanical backyard of looking glasses, fairy lights, and sweet scented hookah fog will beckon to you while hot girls dressed as bookish librarians serve you to your hearts content. Not to be missed while soaking in the vintage glory: Cardamom or honey-lavender steamer. Chocolate stout ice cream float. ANYTHING on dessert menu. Put on your pork-pie hat and tighten those sock guarders b*tches, it's time for a night out at Pied Cow.

Strange ambience.. yes it reminds me of the late 60s/early 70s times.. I think - no, I know, I actually lived in this kind of place.. even the music they were playing.. was set for that time period. It just did not do it for me NOW.. like it was overstated? I was craving some natural relaxant.. kava. The stuff "relaxing" is made from.. I had many punch bowls of this in Kona Hawaii.. Maybe I was just craving Hawaii.. At any rate they serve it there so I had to check it out.. No No NO! They so do not have either the right concoction or they just had no clue how to prepare the kava.. so disappointing.. I did drink it really fast, because it gets in your system and maybe? it helps kick in faster. No.. just tasted all watery.. dang it! We also ordered the hazelnut brie with bread.. meh again.. what the heck? The bowl was super hot as the server stated.. but the cheese's consistency was like I was fighting with it trying to get it on the bread or on the apples.. Not working for me. I give it a 2 star because it's an old house, with some interesting decor/ambience/wall paperS. The server was as sweet as can be.. but there just seemed to be an essence missing.

Wow, this place is awesome because of it's uniqueness and coziness. I mean c'mon it runs out of a house and the ambiance is incredible, even if it has that gypsy feeling. Definitely a great place to take a date. The music and the lighting set the mood here. The sweets are well sweet. I ordered the peanut butter truffle and holy cow! I almost went into diabetic shock. I'll admit I'm not a huge chocolate fan (crazy I know) but it had peanut butter. It's rich and smooth, huge hit with chocoholics. Make sure to have plenty of water or milk around. The marionberry pie helped balance the truffle's sweetness with it's tartness. Again, I was surprised by this place and the staff let us enjoy your evening. It's worth checking out at least once.

Ambiance is cool, especially in the summer. Hookah and food are good, but the service leaves a LOT to be desired. I know it's supposed to be a relaxed atmosphere, but the service is so relaxed it's hard to get your drink refilled or a new coal for your hookah. We always have to flag someone down and they seem really bothered by it. If the service was a little better we'd be there all the time.

I'm not one of those Start-up Guys, but I work for one. I've never gotten into the game myself, because it seems like every time I have a good idea, I read the next day that someone in San Francisco has just secured $x million in venture funding for it. I've always kept my one really, truly good idea up my sleeve, though, because someday, when I have the money and the time to invest in it, I could pull it off perfectly. Or so I thought until today, when I went to Pied Cow for the first time. My idea already exists. It's in Southeast Portland. Back to the drawing board. The environment at Pied Cow is ideal. Just perfect. Their menu even says that it's an escape from mundane 21st century concerns, and that's precisely what I wanted when I walked in. Out back, under the shelter in their heated back yard, I puffed mint shisha and drank a bottle of Portuguese vinho tinto and read a book. I didn't even try the food. Oh, but I will. Seriously, I'm not even mad that they stole my idea.

we came from late night eats after a comedy show and couldn't resist checking out this place that seemed like some friend's cool parents' old house and fun backyard, complete with fire pit and lanterns and sheltered seating. one of our servers was especially captivating with her "dirty old england" accent which seemed exaggerated for the eerie fairy that she seemed. everything was a seeeeecret, including "what's in the basement?" and "what's in your amazing necklace?" and she told us, if we were to do "one thing while in portland, you HAVE to check out the rose garden!" we happened to go the next day, in time to see no roses and the stems only. we figured perhaps she was very morbid. hehe. but back, to the pied cow! i had a lovely chai and we all shared the apple hookah which was super fun and relaxing. our other server was super friendly and engaging as well but not as spooky. we had fun later imagining going back the next day to check in again and learning that our fair lady server had not worked there since the 20s and has been haunting the quirky place ever since. don't think it's the case though!

The house wine special - is always a great deal, and not too shabby. The first time I came, we just had wine. Then I returned for some late night snackage. I had the spicy bean dip, thinking that was one of the few vegetarian options I could order. I don't know if it was me (highly likely) but as I read the menu - nothing really caught my eye as "veggie friendly". I glossed over most of it, resting on the desserts thinking, "so it's a coffeehouse with good wine and desserts". Then I ordered the spicy bean dip - wasn't too bad! The people next to us ordered soup - which was vegetarian (that day?), and I was kicking myself I didn't order THAT! Of course the desserts are good, but so are the salads ...and the soup. It's a bit small, if it's cold outside and you want to be warm. I am looking forward to sitting out on their patio this summer though!!

Stopped here for tea and pie after an evening flight into PDX. She and I shared Marion berry pie and ice cream, which was mediocre, but my Ginger lemon tea was excellent. The service was slow, but the slightly gothic/macabre environment dark and intimate with a pleasant candle burning the night away was the intent. Add apple pie or apple crisp to the menu and this Pied Cow would get a solid 5 stars from me.

I love the Pied Cow. The ambiance is dreamy and fairy tale like. The wait staff is prompt, yet laid back. I love the cheese fondue, and the peanut butter truffle teacup. I'm not in love with their chocolate cake, or the brownie boat. They are open till midnight, which is good if your with minors (or mormons) and want to hang out late. I'll be spending my summer nights on the patio, enjoying hooka.

The pied cow is a truly unique experience, bring an open mind and enjoy. my boyfriend and I are hooked on the brownie boat and if you are feeling especially adventurous go for the try this if you dare-a ridiculously rich piece of chocolate cake with a shot of espresso poured on top. It is a dream. Love to bring friends here for hookah and relaxation!

The Pied Cow won me over before I even walked in the door, and continued to woo me with a generous helping of the daily soup and fresh baked bread. And the Hot Lemon Ginger Toddy soothed my sore throat like some kind of miracle. I enjoyed good food while taking in the eclectic décor under the warm, moody lighting in the company of a lovely friend. The atmosphere is surreal, the patio is private, the menu has a little something for everyone, and overall I'd recommend Pied Cow as a dining experience to anyone passing through Portland. Unless they're passing through with kids... In which case I'd direct them elsewhere.

Last time I was here, the only seating was in a drafty, leaky tent in the middle of a downpour. But you know what? Warm gingerbread cake with ice cream really will make it all better! A bit pricey, but I've never hand anything that I didn't love here.

Great place to hangout. Nice interior and outdoor seating is preferable EVEN DURING the rain! They have a huge heating lamp in the patio area that works wonders. For those sitting far from the heating lamp, the attendants started a little fire in the pits outside. Totally welcoming. Hookah had great variety and good quality pipes. Reasonable price for a group activity at $16. Wine and beer selection were affordable as well. yelp.com/biz_photos/h9GR… My only complaint was with the Kava. Kava = Rainwater filtered once through a gutter at the end of autumn after the leaves have shed and partially biodegraded. I wish they'd try to make it a little bit more palatable. Served lukewarm and with no taste. I don't care if it's cultural, it's disgusting. Please add chocolate. :) That would make it mighty tasty...dirt. Haha.

The Pied Cow is classic Portland! I've been coming here for well over a decade! The best part of the Pied Cow is the ambiance! It's so enjoyable to grab late night coffee or dessert in the living or dining room! However, went the weather is good it's well worth the wait to grab a garden seat. The appetizers are decent but it's the dessert you really want to go to. And it's a Portland coffee house so there is always kava and hookah if that's your scene! Great chill atmosphere, great coffee, great dessert!

I love the Pied Cow. The Interior has a creepy voodoo Victorian feel. The beverage selection is great. The deserts are delicious. A few of my favorites are the rose lemonade, the lavender steamer, and the chocolate cake topped with espresso. Don't come here if you need WiFi. There is none. Suck it up, internet addict. The snack options are good, but I wouldn't some here specifically for big meal. The meat and cheese plates are as close as your going to get to an entree. The staff are amazing. The ambiance is rad. Overall, really fantastic place.

Enjoyed a tasty glass of wine (served in juice glasses...so cute!) and a vanilla hookah here the other night. Great outdoor patio. Have coffee, tea and desserts in a pleasant hippy style outdoor garden that's lit up at night. Adjacent is the main building: a cute and characterful Victorian house- a classic SE Portland experience. Service was a little slow, but what's the rush?

Hookah, hummus, and a man-o-rexic waiter in a wife beater and suspenders.. Doesn't get any better. So I lived in Portland for years and I am just now writing about it. I was there this last weekend to watch the UFC fight at the rose garden and the guys I was with said they wanted to try something different, this is easy to do in Portland. So I took them here. Not that great of a food selection but they have hookah and we all like that. We were all pretty happy with what we got. The portions were huge and the prices were decent except the hookah, man what a rip off, now I own one so I know the costs and every thing that goes along with it. I believe it was almost 20 bucks for the hookah, but it was a good time and we aren't cheap so it wasnt that big of a deal. I had the Meza platter which has tzatziki, hummus, veggies, and pita bread, it was pretty good. The service can be pretty lacking but than again it is Portland and they go at their own pace.

Food, Beverages, alcohol-free and alcoholic This is a great place for the food and beverages. I love their beverages menu, which rangeth from coffee--the traditional house coffee, plus espresso drinks--cappucinos, and their caffe au lait is delicious. They have tasty desserts, and there are some wonderful people that work there. However, they can be a little bit slow in seating people and they could stand to fix the lock on their bathroom. However, the energy there is wonderful for those who live on and for the Faerie, Goth, etc. types of energies and atmospheres. Their triple cappucino is excellent. Their house coffee is $1.50, and is a bit overpriced for the quality of that particular drink on their menu. They are a mellow crowd overall and the price is good for the food and such they serve. However, if you want quick service, they can be a bit slow. Great if you smoke hookahs--and the smell is great even if you don't, lol. Bright blessingses, Bright

I had never been here until last week - from the outside it's a cool house that has been turned into a coffee/dessert/drinks place. I didn't realize there was a patio area that is totally hidden from the street. It was so nice and laid back to hang out there, with the smells of hookahs and good conversation. The service was good, the atmosphere is pleasant, and it allows dogs on the patio. It's a great place to hang out at night after dinner.

Last night, I finally witnessed the aura of the Pied Cow. Like many reviewers noted, this place would have hit the spot for me in high school. It's very Mazzy Star - from the sweet, trendy, straight-haired servers in skirts to the flowers carpeting the treed courtyard. Very poetic, indeed. So naturally, I was uncertain when we entered. I guess I might have passed it over as a place for a less mature, less jaded crowd, but I wanted chocolate and my friend said we should go here. Turns out, a mature group of ladies, wandering post-happy-hour, can find quite a lot to smile about on the Pied Cow menu...chocolate fondue, nutella-banana crepe, and other sinful cravings. We flipped right past the Teas and Coffees, I'll admit. We were drinking and smoking, so sitting outside was an added bonus. My friends ordered port and cider, but I was undecided. Then I noticed their menu had mead. Mountain Meadows Mead, to be exact - a favorite West Coast brand. Let me tell you all something: The pleasure of sipping a glass of sweet mead or port under a canopy of flowered trees in the summer with your girlfriends, while dipping donut holes in chocolate fondue is ENTIRELY adult and most especially appreciated by those with a 2-year-old who sings "Jingle Bells" every day in June. It was a memorable evening with an ambiance created by us, not the venue.

This place has fantastic atmosphere. There is a huge patio with outdoor seating and heaters so we were able to sit outside even in October. They have super friendly service and an awesome menu. I wish I lived in Portland so I could go back frequently and try more of their selection. I had the Gingerbread and honey ginger toddy both of which I can highly reccomend. I will be back someday to try the fondue (both chocolate and cheese)

My reviews usually focus on the food and drinks, but the menu didn't turn me on. Portland has a lot of great coffee and places for food, but I wouldn't describe Pied Cow with any superlatives in that respect. Pied Cow shines in a different way; its dark décor is decorated with a disparate assemblage of objet d'art forming a pastiche. As a result, Pied Cow has Dada anti-aesthetic feel to it. Our server seemed like she was straight out of a David Lynch movie. Her speech was slightly stilted, and I had the impression that she was a bit shy. At the same time, she was friendly and a good server. Together, the server and décor just seemed to work and produce an almost surreal atmosphere.

Pretty dark but other than that it had a very cool atmosphere. Lots of seating, but still cozy. Felt like we were hanging out in the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. Even the servers were kinda creepy in a nice way? Does that make sense? The whole vibe makes it worth a visit. Their Mexican hot chocolate is insane as well. Freshly shaved chocolate and about a pound of whipped cream.

Pied cow is one of my favorite late night spots, if only for the food, especially the baked brie with apples and hazelnuts and the peanut butter teacup. Mezza platter also tops high on my list of things to nosh on after midnight. They even have a fair amount of obscure and unique fermented beverages, ranging from beer and cider to wine and sangria. That's all worth 5 stars and then on top of that they have a lovely atmosphere and fantastic hookah! But I'm sad to say, I'm not giving them five stars, only because they have hands down some of the worst service I have ever experienced! We have been here on several occasions and it's certainly not all the servers that are poor, just one in particular. She greets you with the enthusiasm of a person who has a fork lodged in her eye. She messed up our order, acknowledging this with complete indifference, as if to say "Yeah I know this is inedible, what do you want me to do about it?". She never smiled, never offered any personality and acted as though we where disturbing her evening. All that aside, the thing that grinds my gears the most is that we sat for a full 25 minutes waiting for a server. By the time she made her way over to us, we where informed that they had stopped serving hookah 20 minutes ago. Well, basic math would indicated that if she had stopped by our table when we had sat down then perhaps we could have ordered a hookah, why else would we be sitting outside a hookah bar on a Saturday night? All that aside, the other server was plenty kind and the service we have gotten on previous occasions was warm and attentive. I know everyone has bad nights, but I sincerely hope they Pied Cow takes notice and has a conversation with the staff (might as well make sure everyones on the same page) about how to treat customers.

Stopped into The Pied Cow over the weekend for dessert and coffee after dinner a couple blocks away. It was pretty quiet in there and had it been a bit warmer I think we would have chosen the outdoor seating area, which not only accomodates hookah, but probably triples their seating. In the mood for pie, I had the pecan (not the super sweet variety) and my better half the marionberry. Both were delicious, as was my Ivanhoe, an iced espresso drink, and his cappuccino. We're definitely keeping this in mind for some warm weather hookah enjoyment.

I love Pied Cow! It is my favorite late night spot to go to with friends. It is always busy but it is still intimate. You can enjoy a coffee and dessert and just hang out and talk among friends. The If You Dare cake is my favorite dessert. Their coffee is amazing and the pita platters are delicious. They have lots of options for sharable foods to split with friends. I see that others comment that the service is lacking....Yes, they don't check up on you often but that is because they give you your space. They are not on you all night trying to get you to leave even when the place is busy. All you have to do is flag them down and they will help you. I appreciate that they give you space and let you relax.

I love the ambiance of this little old house. It is really only 2 rooms with hardwood floors and high ceilings, but the charm is still in tact. The stairway to the upstairs makes for a beautiful display area for antiques and the old dining room has a lovely chandelier surrounded by bright floral fabric that makes the room feel more elegant than it is. The menu looked good, some teas, coffee, food, desserts and tobacco for the hookah. The tables in the place are all pretty rickety - beware of leaning too hard! I had 50/50 service. 2 servers were there, 1 had a bad attitude (how do these people have jobs?) and the other was perfectly nice. I realized that this "Coffeehouse" does not have wi-fi after sitting and ordering my tea and food. I had pulled out my laptop in hopes of getting a few things done before my other parties arrived. I asked the ruder of the servers if they had a signal and his response was "No, we do not to encourage the use of computers here". Alright. As I looked at him confused about the attitude I put my computer away. I guess I was an idiot for assuming a coffeehouse in Portland would have wi-fi. Well, now we all know. My food came and went, it was ok. A little overpriced for what I got, but I was starving, so it was nice that they had some variety of vegan and veggie food to choose from. Overall, this place is good for ambiance, mediocre on service & food and not good at all for working or business meetings.

I like Pied Cow, it's a pretty neat place. But everything here is so hit and miss. The service is usually pretty bad. Orders have been placed and forgotten in the past, drinks have been neglected, wrong dishes have come out. Also, while they aren't rude, to me anyway, they aren't exactly nice either. I think in service politeness goes a long way, but unless I feel a server is going out of his/her way to disrespect me I usually don't make it into a big deal. As for the food, it's pretty good most of the time, but pricey. I usually go with a friend, and the two of us get a couple appetizers, or an appetizer and a dessert, to share/split. It would be a great place to bring a group and share with each other. I've not done hookah here, but definitely want to some day. Also I love the back patio, it's so nice and cozy, the only reason I really ever come back. Wish this place would tweak some stuff. I would visit more often if it cost slightly less, and if I felt a little more welcome.

Not as fantastic as I'd hoped, but fine. I would return, but mostly if Pied Cow were in a different city without other options. Here, the fact that it's a little funky and has plenty of vegetarian options just doesn't stand out. I guess that's nice in general, but too bad for this dark little place.

I wish the hookah was as good as the food in this place! But it's still my favorite and only place that I can eat and smoke hookah at at the same time! I love the fact that outside patio is available in both winter and summer. It's actually heated in winter! The staff are very friendly.. service can get a bit slow but I think it's understandable given that they are super busy most the time!

Now I will give the bad first and end with the good. The service could use some help outside. I have only been there once and to be honest I would maybe give it one more try but they are expensive and you feel cheated. When I saw that it was $17 for a hookah I said what the hell and hoped it would be good. I was very disappointed. I couldn't taste the mango flavor I ordered and it took forever to even get to place the order for it. The waitress was rude when giving me my check. I will say What I spent on my hookah and my one drink was what I spend for me and a friend to go out to another hookah place. I will say that sitting outside was really nice, my Sangria drink was very good and the hostess was really nice. The places has a nice vibe and its nice that they only allow 21 and over.

Okay, I was wavering between three and four stars and went with three because of the service. Are they going for the aloof French waiter thing? I don't know, but I do know it's not working... I went here last night with a few friends and I have to say that, by the time we finally got a table outside, our server was a really nice, helpful guy. The others, not so much. But, moving on from the service, the Pied Cow is pretty awesome. Especially for a nice, warmish night when you can sit out in the garden area. Last night we had a hookah (pear-mango), a few beers among us (I especially liked the Sea Dog Raspberry Wheat), and a few delicious slices of pie. Overall I would definitely recommend it for a chill summer evening.

This was a really nice Hookah lounge. I love the outdoor area as I felt like I was in my backyard. There was a decent selection of food stuffs however I did not have anything other than the Hookah. There was a good variety of Hookah flavors and the coconut one was great. My only "gripe" was that it was a little pricey. I've been to Hookah lounges where a full pipe costs only $7 whereas this one was $16. I will admit that I'm comparing apples to oranges since I am from NJ and comparing a NJ price to Portland price. Overall, I really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of this location and would definitely like to come back when I'm back in town visiting.

we came here on a rainy day so it was nice to be indoors. i got the marionberry pie (no ala mode needed) and j got the gingerbread cake. it was okay, a bit dry. see pics! the patrons, wait staff and the place are a bit eccentric. i notice that Portlanders have a distinct style. Definitely check out Urth Cafe when in LA and Pied Cow in Portland!

I do love me some pied cow, though this is certainly FAR better in the summer. If you come here, I suggest filling up on food beforehand. The prices for their food is just not worth it. Wtih that being said, everything else is great. I love the outdoor seating in the summer time when it's all open and there is lots of room. There's just no beating it's atmosphere, with the exception of a few great bars. hookah is a major plus, and the beer prices are decent. Pied cow is best for a date or a larger group. I highly suggest it.

First off, I've only been here once. Recently I had to meet up with a friend on a Sunday afternoon to go over some stuff, and this location was picked solely by convenience of location. But it was a pleasant enough experience. Walking in, two things vie for your attention: the funky decor (I approve, by the way), and the funky smell. We settled onto a comfy couch, checked out the menu, and aha! Lightbulb... hookahs. So that's the smell. If you're scent-sitive (don't kick me for that), you might find it hard to deal with - for me it was a noticeable presence, but not painful. My friend got a big-ass mocha, which he seemed to enjoy, while I had some Moroccan mint tea, which was lovely except that the janky pot it came in was really dribbley when trying to pour. (I'm also pretty uncoordinated sometimes, so half of that's on me.) The service was friendly and attentive - they checked on us a couple of times but weren't intrusive. Although I'm generally opposed to hookah-smoking (for myself, and unless I'm monstrously drunk), there's also booze on their menu and the outdoor seating had some potential. I wouldn't be against coming back here sometime if someone suggested it.

I'm not quite sure what to say about the Pied Cow. I have a feeling the patio was the place to be, and from the inside looking out it seemed great, but I sat inside where the lighting was so low you couldn't read the menu. Now I am a lover of ambiance...sexy candles in a dark room would be great if there were a sexy man sitting across the way, but there wasn't....so it was a little strange. Plus it was dark enough for me to run into chair that I couldn't see the corner of. I think this would be a cute dessert and coffee date place. I liked the feel of the place, and the servers were all super cute, but the tables indoors were set up so that chairs were just about on top of eachother...which didn't make sense. If someone had been at the table next to me, I would have been in their lap (maybe that would have been a good thing...who knows). Their hummus wasn't anything special...cold and a little thick. And the bread fell apart every time I tried to dip it into the hummus. I hear great things about the fondue though, so I might try that if I ever come back. I had a lavender and honey infused steamer which was AMAZING. If you like steamed milk, lavender, and honey, TRY THIS. The only downside was that they put a ridiculously hot drink in a glass...not a mug made of glass..but a regular beverage glass with no handles that burned my hand when I tried to pick it up. Not great planning on their part, but it was still delicious. I'd give it another go, since it wasn't a bad experience and the patio looked wicked awesome. But I doubt that it'll be my go to place in Portland.

The Pied Cow is a cafe in the Belmont neighborhood housed in a lovely victorian. They have coffee, tea, nibbles, wine, beer and appetizers. It's not a place to have a full-on meal, but a great place if you're a little bit hungry and want a comfortable place to hang. While the inside area is cozy, I highly recommed spending your afternoon on the patio of Pied Cow. I went here this evening, and although it was pretty warm today (by Portland standards), it felt super comfortable, even chilly at times, because the whole patio is shaded by trees. It's super laid back, and even though you're right on Belmont, it's quiet and relaxing. Highly recommended are the hummus, mezza and cheese plates. They all go well with a pint of beer - the beer on tap rotates, so just ask. Tonight it was Laurelwood's Organic Red, which is always delish and local. The staff is beyond hipster, but always very, very nice. My only gripe with this place, is actually kind of stupid. As a single girl, sometimes I just wanna go out by myself and not be surrounded by couples. This 'aint the place. Not only was I surrounded by couples, people were cuddling. Ick. So, yeah, great date spot, but maybe not so much for the single folk. Whatever. I'll still go there for a beer, hummus and some shade. Oh, and they have hookas if you're down with that. Oh, and if you go here, please stop by Noun next door!

During my last night in Portland my friends and I came here because a friend noticed the hookah sign outside the previous day while we were waiting to grab a table at Cricket across the street. What a great find! The wait was quite a while, but worth it in the end. We sat outside and had the coconut and pear hookah. To drink I ordered the sangria which was ok...not too much a fan of (I'm used to lemon/lime soda in my sangria, not coke, but to each their own). To eat we had the baked brie which was delicious and included apples and hazelnuts on the side. Overall it was a very relaxed atmosphere with good service. I definitely felt it was the perfect place to spend my last hours in the city.

My husband and I went to the Pied Cow for dessert a couple of weeks ago, about 4:00 or 5:00 p.m.. Place didn't seem busy, although there were several full tables. Greeted effusively by the hostess, handed menus, then ignored. After over 10 minutes of waiting, decided to leave. About to stand up, server came toward us- then veered to table beside ours, to clear it. Never a word or glance at us! We were really glad to get out of there, after that. Heartily *not* recommended.

Katrina W nailed this review - so much so that I'm finding it difficult to evoke emotions that she herself didn't already say so eloquently. Read it. In the meantime, I'll give it a go... Have you stayed at the Flying Pig in Amsterdam? Many of us have...some of us remember...which is just incredible. We've sat in the pillow lounge area, entranced by a kaleidoscope of red curtains, foreign accents, stained glass, backpacks, and body odor. We were strangely comfortable and terrified at the same time, but embraced it openly knowing it was a temporary indulgence. The Pied Cow holds this same mystique - a compelling window into La Vie Boheme, yet in a way that has become so commodified that it is now la vie-mainstream. A paradox indeed. Enchanting the first time...but after each return visit it becomes less and less attractive. My most recent visit was certainly not my first, but it had been a few years. I found the menu ample, but uninspired...and I was disappointed to see that due to only serving beer and wine, all of the alcohol options (save the spiced wine) were cold. Given the space and vibe of the venue, a Spanish Coffee or a Hot Buttered Rum would have been divine. Two students were doing homework at a table next to us, and we felt like we needed to keep our voices to a whisper. 4 people whispering over beer and cheesecake...Uncomfortable at best. Clientele walking in would awkwardly drop their voices upon entering, realizing this was a "quite time" atmosphere. And brrrrrrrrrrr! It was Frrrrreezing inside! What I did not encounter was the poor service I've read about. In fact, our service was probably the highlight of the evening - both people who helped us were exceptionally friendly, quick, and helpful. Definitely a 5-star service experience. If you haven't been - GO. It's a must. Tasty treats and eclectic atmosphere abound. However, Pied Cow will never be one of my timeless favorites, in the same way that the next time I visit Amsterdam, I will not be staying at the Flying Pig.

In search for specialty dessert places on our last night in Portland, we discovered Pied Cow Coffeehouse. (We might have been persuaded by the funny sounding name.) Looming over the dark street like a haunted house, the Coffeehouse was daunting at first. We almost turned around to decide on another place to go to, but once we settled into a table, we immediately relaxed. Inside, place was calming and quiet. The lights were dimmed and the walls were covered with interesting things to study. Even the waitress had on an interesting outfit to study. (Interesting in a good way.) My rose lemonade was delicious, but I wish I had ordered something a little bit more exotic, like my friend's lavender infused steam, which I liked a lot. (The steam was something like warm milk with a fluffy consistency.) My boyfriend's brownie boat was also very delicious. You must try the brownie if you can't decide on what to get!

I stopped in here with a date for a warmer. It is housed in an old Victorian house which makes it very romantic. I ordered the hot chocolate and it was great. However, my date ordered the steamed milk. I took a sip and was blown away. The milk was steamed with honey and given a light lavendar taste. It was amazing!! I wished right then and there I had ordered the steamed milk and not my old standard, hot chocolate. We didn't eat, but perusing the menu, the food looked pretty good. I am definitely going back to this charming spot.

One thing that I love about my friends oh-so-much is their encouragement to commit each of the deadly sins. Last night was no exception. After an afternoon spent watching football Chris, Julie and I decided to grab some dessert before calling it a night. We were already on Belmont so we decided to go to the Pied Cow. Within minutes, Chris and I decided that we would be splitting the chocolate fondue with added peanut butter. A better decision has never been made before. (decide=4 times. I need a thesaurus) The fondue came out quickly with a plate of apple slices, bananas, donut holes, and marshmallows. Talk about gluttony! The three of us couldn't even finish the whole thing, it was so big! So much food for such a small price. Totally worth it if you're looking for a choco-fix with friends.

A dark, moody, dirty place that needs to throttle back on the teen- hipster, counterculture-wannabe-with-unwashed-dreadlocks vibe. You've never even heard of Che Guevara, have you, sweetie? I get it P-cow: you're too cool to care. You can't be bothered. Yeah, I felt that way when I was 16, too. But now I'm a grown-up, and the forced angst rubs me the wrong way. You dig? Enjoy the teenagers that your watermelon-scented hookah are likely to attract. I'll strap on my Depends, and stop annoying you with my irritating un-cool/adult needs. For example: my hot coffee-- NOT-- served in a juice glass. I'd imagine the patio would be nice on a summer night under the right circumstances, though.

I had my first Pied Cow experience last weekend for a friend's birthday, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The old house, patio, and decor are both odd and charming, and I was a big fan of the neighborhood cat that hung out with us all evening. The menu includes a variety of desserts, coffees, and alcohol. My friend and I shared the fondue, and later she ordered the $50 sundae. Even though there were 10 of us in total, we were not able to finish the sundae, they're not kidding around with that gigantic dessert. I got the chai tea twice because it was so incredibly delicious. The only down side was our first waitress, who was a bit grumpy and seemed irritated by our being there and, ya know, wanting food. Our subsequent waitress (Who I think might have been the owner?) was incredibly friendly and attentive. This is the type of place I want to bring friends who are visiting, or just hang out with fellow Portlanders for the evening, so I'll definitely be coming back.

I hadn't smoked hookah in a VERY long time. I was in Portland visiting one of my old college hookah buddies and she took me to the Pied Cow to revisit our beloved old pastime. We took a table in their covered & heated outdoor area and ordered coffee, dessert and some watermelon hookah. Everything was splendid. The coffee was tasty, the dessert was delicious (even though they brought me the wrong thing; I ate it anyway) and the hookah was perfect. I can't imagine a better way to spend a cold, rainy day with an old friend (or loved one) than puffing smoke outside over chocolate and coffee. Amazing. Thank you, Pied Cow.

It was time to update my review! It's been over two years since I've been here for the first time now so me and the cow are better friends. This is a place to go if you want to sit, talk with friends, and forget time. You can sit inside (comfy old house with a couple different seating options of varied comfort) or outside on the cozy and mood-lit patio. If it's summer, go for the patio. You can smoke the hookah. I don't. But others were and it smelled good. You'll take a seat and wait a fair bit for someone to come take your order but that's okay, it will give you time to lull over the choices. There are a lot of choices. This is the reason that I removed a star, though. Even if you aren't in a hurry it's nice to feel like you can get someones attention when you need to. My go-to item is the bowl of kava to share. Like I said, it's a good place to go with friends and friends share. But if you're ordering food, order for yourself. It's too good to share. I love the hummus plates. i guess they are a good size, so maybe you can share a little bit. I've also tried the lavender/honey steamer. It was smooth, sweet, and tasted like summer. Definitely a good bet if that's your thing. So go, and be calm.

After passing this place so many times, I finally had the chance to slip in one evening for dessert. Having never been, I was immediately comforted with the dark warm eclectic interior. We had the option to sit outside, but decided on inside. That being said, I was there on a date and it was the perfect atmosphere for it. Except that someone had brought a newborn out that cried almost the whole time (at 9pm). We shared the chocolate fondue. I love chocolate and I love chocolate fondue. It comes with a huge pot of it and a plate of bananas, donut pieces, marshmallow, and apples. We didn't even get halfway through the plate before we decided that we were finished. The chocolate was a bit overpowering for both of us. I think I had a chocolate coma for the two days after. I would definitely go back again, but would prefer to try something else the next time. It is definitely a nice cozy nighttime place for sure. And it's nearby to where I live so even better!

If I were to review this place after my first experience there, I probably would have given it a 3.5. After heading there again yesterday, I would give this place a 2.5 - so I figure that I take the average and there you have it. We didn't do much here - just smoked a little hooka, and had a round of beers... but the service was terrible - we were ignored completely. We headed outside (one waitress knowing full-well that we were out there) and we waited, and waited, and waited... and then we actually decided that if she didn't come out there in 2 minutes that we were going to take off. She had 15 seconds left on that 2 minutes, but I was starting to feel like I didn't even want to be there anymore because I was so annoyed. We had the blackberry hooka, and it was quite tasty and the heaters were keeping us warm enough, but I didn't get that cute-funky vibe during round 2 that I had the first time that I was there... and I'd say that I had about the same level of drunkeness both times. I'd say that this place has it's moments... but there are places that are much friendlier and cuter in Portland, so adios vaca... until I need my hooka again.

So the menu is yum. The vibe is hip. The garden is fabulous, especially on a warm summer night. However, this is the first place I have visited in Portland where I seriously wondered if maybe I'm too old for the place. Call me crazy for wanting to be acknowledged by the waitstaff within the first 45 minutes of arrival. I think if I were still in college I would have loved it. If I were even a young twenty-something it would have been great. As it is, I'm over 30; I've got the beginnings of crows feet around the eyes, and I think that puts me over the acceptable age limit for this hipper-than-thou SE pdx locale. It certainly put me into the invisibility spectrum for the waitstaff. As you can tell from my other reviews (what? you haven't read them yet?!.) I'm not a fan of the smoking. I can survive in the garden at the PC because it's mostly sweet-smelling hookah smoke. Their fruity hookah concoctions are the equivalent of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine. It gets the newbies primed for the harder stuff to come when they're ready to step it up a notch. In all seriousness, if you go, I highly recommend their ice-cream and espresso concoction. If they can manage to bring it out to you before the ice cream has melted entirely, all the better.

Probably the best last night place I can think of in Portland. I honestly don't explore the food options too much. I almost always get the Salami and Cheese platter or desert (all the desert is AMAZING). The 'Try This If You Dare' or whatever the espresso brownie ice cream thing is delicious. The atmosphere is great for just one on one talks with people. Really dark, a little creepy, but kind of a fun feelings. Amazing tea and coffee and I hear the hookah is good but I've never tried it there. Super great.

I wish Yelp allowed separate ratings for different aspects of a place, because the Pied Cow is great if you want a drink, especially if you like patios or have a dog. The patio space is well covered, making it very comfortable in questionable weather. The coffees, teas and alcohol are good. I don't recommend the food though, especially for those with specific preferences. Recently my $10 salad - made vegan by omitting cheese, arrived with two pats of butter on the bread. The waitress assures us the pita bread is vegan, but I doubt it because most commercial pita bread is not and because she didn't seem very interested in the specifics of other items: my friend asked what honeybush tea is, and the server replied that she didn't know, then just stood there without offering to find out or bring out the package or anything else. And for $10, you get a plate of lettuce with a few shavings of carrot, a couple bits of cucumber and some tomato.

Delicious desserts that only a wizard could fashion in a setting that feels like a Harry Potter movie! If you're a fan of sweet treats, wizardy niches, and hookah(i didn't try out this feature), this is the late night hang out spot for you. Expecto Patronum!!

Restrooms: One single stall When I'm looking for something delectably sinful with which to please my palate, I come to Pied Cow. For me, the choice is simple: either the rich chocolate peanut butter teacup - which is literally a teacup full of chocolate and peanut butter - or the Hazelnut Banana Nutella Crepe, which is served flaming. How can you go wrong with a dish that comes to you on fire? It's especially great for warming your hands on those cold days. Pied Cow is a lovely space, with plenty of seating - both in and out, a selection of good noshy nibbly bits, windes and beers, and delicious-as-heck desserts. It is also good to note that they do not have wifi, which means you don't necessarily want to come here to study but that you DO come here if you want to be present and engaged with your date. They are also open late, which is nice in a town which seems to roll up the sidewalks as soon as it gets dark, and the indoor seating is reasonably cozy even during the long desultory Portland winter.

I never heard of this place until my friend recommended we go to it for its food and hookah. We were trying to plan to go to a place with a hookah first off. And he found this place. The hookah is decently priced and the food is good. The tea is also very good. The one thing that is not so good about the hookah is that they do not replace the coals once they are done. Even if you have tobacco left.. they wouldn't change the coal. A little frustrating and you feel a little cheated. I had the hummus plate and that was very good. Everything tasted super fresh. Good marks for the food. My buddy and I started to feel a little tired towards the end of the night, and decided to get some tea. The waiter recommended the Argentinian tea, so we had a go. What a great recommendation! It did exactly what it was supposed to do. The downside...it lasted til 5am! Phew! They also have space heaters outdoors to keep you warm if it gets a little cold. Good place to go for hookah and something to snack on.

The Pied Cow used to be a real treasure, but it's gone down hill in recent years. I've been there a handful of times and each experience has had something outstandingly terrible about it. First off, the food isn't mind blowing. It's good, but it doesn't make up for everything else. If you're looking for something with similar indoor ambiance I suggest The Rimsky Korsakoffee House. At least they have live music. So, what's wrong with the place? Well the service is simply terrible. I know it's hard to be a server. You bust your ass and deal with anything from assholes to idiots to parties of 10. I get that. That's what tips are for. But these servers are the worst I've ever encountered. For example, I was outside with a party of 4 or 5 one night, smoking a hookah. We ordered efficiently and politely. We never were loud or anything. At one point our hookah broke. It straight up fell apart. We waited for 10 minutes for our server. Eventually I went over to let her know that it was busted. She took a further 10 minutes without coming over to the table. When I flagged her again she said she was busy. They proceeded to charge us for a new coal when they brought out the replacement hookah. Classy. That's a pretty typical experience for me and my friends at this place.

This is one of the best places in Portland for dessert! I have been here many a times with friends and wish I'd been here with a date because it is just so cozy. Inside, it is dimly lit with cool art and fun people. Outside is a patio with lights and tiki torches, where you can also buy hookahs (which are only worth getting if you go in a group, because they're pretty expensive). The two best desserts or drinks I've had are the peanut butter cup and the mulled wine. The peanut butter cup is just what it sounds like but even more delicious and fatty: a tea cup filled lined with chocolate and filled with peanut butter goodness. When I go with friends we usually share several desserts so we can share the goodness. Their sundaes are pretty damn good too. But what I most recently discovered was the mulled wine. On a freezing winter night, there isn't much better than ending the night at the Pied Cow with a mug of their warm mixture of wine, tea, spices and a cinnamon stick to top it off. Only word of warning on this one: the combination of wine and heat may cause increase in flushed face, or maybe only for those of us who are more flushed-cheeks-prone. Go here for their desserts with a date. Perfect ambience and delicious nighttime treats.

I went here the other night with a friend for coffee. I had never been here for the actual coffee before and was pleasantly surprised when the waiter brought out espresso coffee with actual whipped cream on top and not just a little bit, it was delicious. I topped it off with the Lavender Honey Steamer, my favorite. The waitstaff was pleasant and prompt. Great experience. I will definitely be back.

This is tough because I LOVE the atmosphere, the drinks, the food, basically everything except the inconsistency of the staff. Every time I've been here the service has been horrible. I came here with a group of about 6 peeps and would not recommend doing this. It was a huge hassle. We ended up waiting forever for anything and everything, had a rude waiter, and after the meal was over and it was time to pay, he told us their debit machine hasn't been working so we'd have to pay in cash. This would have been fine had we been told BEFOREhand. But no, he decided to tell us after we had already sat down and eaten. Totally lame of him considering most people don't carry cash around anymore. None of us had any, so we had to split up and venture off in the pouring rain to get cash back from the grocery store up the street. The waiter was *extremely* apathetic and didn't offer any apology. To top it off they added 18% gratuity. It killed the mood for all of us. If you're not in a group this place is the bees knees. Try their Meza platter, Lavender steamer, flavored hookah, or cheese plate. All are fantastic. 3 stars only because the staff sucks badly.

One of my favorite hiding spots in Portland. I can bring my dog there when the weather is good (definitely a plus) but the staff sometimes knows they look really cool or...something...and have annoying attitudes--some, but not all! It doesn't matter anyways, because I love dessert. Pecan pie is wonderful, the cat roaming is swell, the teas are really nice, and the painting of the ship in the bathroom cracks me up every time (no idea why...just does). It is homey, dim and nice for dates, and reasonably priced. I have yet to try their fifty dollar dessert...but I think I might have to someday soon. Also: I came here for a tea one afternoon while coming down from a trip, and felt totally comfortable and at ease with everything and everyone there. That's gotta count for something, right? ---Later Review--- I trekked from my NE home to meet up with a girlfriend for tea. Ambiance was just how we like it....as usual, very dim and just crowded enough so our ridiculous and revealing conversations could not be easily over heard, even if the tables are close together. We were both hungry for something to share and not sugary. The fondue was disappointing, not that I expected them to do it traditionally, but the cheeses are too cheesy/suited for an American palate, and so the white wine cooked with it doesn't even suit it....but we were hungry and ate every last morsel. Caved and got marionberry pie. Delish. Service typically lax. Same brunette with a superior look on her face? Yeah. Working 25 hours a week is such a drag. Just don't try at all. My main draw to go back to Pied Cow is the atmosphere, always. They could work on changing up their menu with some new stuff, and the servers being slightly more aware of their customers (water, hot water refills, picking up the check without having to wait 15 minutes..).

Great atmosphere, but things are a little overpriced. Service is better than at Rimsky's, but that's not saying much. Still, it's open late and has both savory and sweet food as well as tea and coffee drinks. Pied Cow is one of the best places to go out at night if you're under 21!

I'm a fan of almost any place that has hookahs, but I especially like this place for its creepy Victorian vibe and its eclectic menu. It features fondue and kava. Kava for chrissakes! Don't forget to get cozy with Morton the cat. I love the gingerbread cake, and there's nothing better than lavender honey milk for sending you off to the land of nod. (And, word to the wise: Kava is not for the faint of heart. It's an odd taste and it will make your mouth numb.)

We had the hookah combo with tea, baklava, mezza plate and double apple hookah. Everything was great and the outside seating is surprisingly comfortable. The menu selection could have been a bit better.

Extremely poor customer service encouraged by typical Portland arrogance. I used to come here every weekend to smoke hookah, especially with friends from out of town. I usually asked for mixed tobacco. I do hookah at home so I know it takes literally seconds to mix a bowl of shisha. There was one particular weekend that would be the last one there. I also tell everyone to steer clear of this place. I ordered the usual tobacco mix from the male waiter there. I don't know his name. He said that they don't mix tobacco and looked at me like I was insane. Then I told him I come here quite often and they never say a word and just mix it for my friends and I like it is standard proceedure. This is what he replied with word for word: "We don't mix tobacco. We pre-make all of our bowls before opening. It is a waste of time to mix the bowls... I mean.. what's in it for me?"... and walked off, without asking if my friends and I would like anything else. Awkward. What's in it for you? Well, let me explain. You work in the food service industry. You provide service to customers that come in to your establishment seeking to be serviced and catered to, otherwise they would cook and eat at home. You are obviously also not in the upper echelons of professions, so stop acting like you run the world. Arrogance isn't pretty at the top and it isn't pretty coming from someone who is truly pretending. Customers pay a premium for said service. What's in it for you is that is how you get paid your wage and if you are a cool person and make people happy to be at the establishment you are representing, you get a tip and you keep your job (hopefully management keeps tabs of their employees that suck and ruin customer experiences). If you forgot what "TIPS" stands for, as with most people and places in the Northwest these days (with the exception of real world-class restaurants and steakhouses), TIPS stands for To Insure Proper Service. You see, your entire job revolves around service, hence why you service people in the food service industry. There is nothing bad about your job, just don't be a jerk. No one likes jerks. To everyone reading: take your money elsewhere, like King's Hookah on Burnside, if you want quality hookah and mixing of tobacco at no extra charge and no attitude from hipster jerks. That's where I've been going ever since this experience at Pied Cow. If you like arrogant servers that think their job isn't to be nice to people and provide solutions, then this is an awesome place to waste your money.

Eclectic. Decorative. Lots of character Varied menu with lots of scrumptious desserts, lunch/snack fare and good variety of wine and beer selection. Only thing missing is a collection of board games but my friends and I entertained ourselves by playing our own version of Pictionary. Awesome time and a great way to enjoy a rainy day. Chocolate Fondue is amazing with delicious fruit, marshmallows and doughnut holes. Citrus would have been a nice addition to have. and easily serves (the menu says Serves 2 but more than enough for 4-6. It was way too much for 2 of us, even with a few of our friends nibbling too.

I really like this place. It's a tad pricey, but the food is pretty good - I lived in Israel for a year and the humus is quite authentic. I really have liked the desserts and the drinks I've tried - my favorite is their chai, which if you like a sweet, but not overpowering chai with a nice flavorful spice to it, it's really good. The brie is good too. It IS a hooka bar, and they definitely allow smoking, so if you have issues with that (I'm allergic) that can be problematic. Their gingerbread cake (as some have mentioned) is amazing, and is really good combined with the chai. The service is spotty - sometimes it's great, sometimes pretty bad - but that's kinda expected. It's a very hipster spot, but that's kinda the appeal - it's quirky and a great place to take people who are new to Portland and wondering about the atmosphere. The fact that it's in a quirky old house and that the patio is lit by red christmas lights and under a huge tree is awesome, especially in the summer. It's also right by a neighborhood with a huge street painting of a sunflower in the center of the street. Very Portland.

I wanted to pack this place up in my suitcase and bring it back to the bay area with me. Although, I can't imagine it being anywhere else besides Portland. Delicious brownie with ice cream, lavender honey steamer, and happy hookah time. The back garden was rather enchanting. The trees, carnival lights, and spires of nearby victorian houses made it feel like a set for a movie. Great place to linger.

Their peanut butter in a tea cup dessert is to die for. Its really best when you share it with someone you have the hots for. The other, must try items include the lemon ginger toddy and the nutella crepe (I mean, who doesn't love a flaming desert). The only reason I can't give them five stars is because they are not really vegan friendly.

This place isn't known for their fantastic coffee, at least, for me it isn't. I believe you pay the extra for the scenery since it is rather nice. If you want to get a group together, hanging out near the patio, and talk story -- then this is your place.

I love the pied cow. I like that they have legit Kava tea and their chai is amazing. I have not tried the food but it always looks great..especially their desserts. The atmosphere in the house is awesome. They have cool music playing, nice dark lighting, and interesting pictures. It's a great place to come and relax with friends. The only annoying thing is that you need to be 21 to buy a hookah. That is really annoying because most places it's 18.

Here's a good story about customer service at Pied Cow. We order hookah. It tastes like burnt coals... Honestly If we are going to throw down 15-20 dollars, I'm not going to smoke coals for god's sakes. So we ask for a change. Keep in mind throughout the entire time we were being as polite as possible, since we have been in service industry and hate bad/rude customers. The owner rudely asks all of us to take a puff, and yah, it tastes like ass. He proceeds to smoke it saying that HE thinks it tastes fine and shisha is expensive (it's not that expensive buddy), and we are the ones who shouldn't complain. Owner: Well maybe the bad taste is all in your heads. Us: So it's in all three of our heads? Owner: maybe it is. It's a rainy day, maybe you're in a bad mood. Then somewhere along the line it goes from the bad-tasting hookah being our fault to: Owner: We don't want customers in here who just order hookah and lemon wedges. Us: Why do you advertise hookah then? Is it bad to order hookah? Owner: We don't want customers who do that, you don't get the experience. WHAT??? Then after we told him he was harassing us, which he was, he rudely and chidishly yelled: "GET OUT AND NEVER COME BACK AGAIN." WOW. seriously? Did that just happen? How does a polite complaint means getting kicked out? How is this place even popular? How is this guy running a business? Who talks like that to customers? Pied cow, you may have good food and skinny staff with braids, but I am never returning to satisfy the asian owner who dresses like a 70s vietnamese FOB with too much money and is so pretentious he has a painting of himself at the front door.

When I lived in the neighborhood I could often be found smoking on the patio, rain or shine since it has covered and open air seating, drinking way too much coffee (yay DIY refills!!), playing all sorts of silly dice or board games while munching on the delicious chocolate fonDO! YUM! It's a little pricey and the service is.... we'll settle for okay (Snobby? Well, that's fine because I really don't want to be around them either.), but I dont ever really come here for the food or drink, it's just a neat place to hang out. The decor is wonderful, be sure to take a peak at the shrine inside!

Stopped here for dessert to close out a date. The Pecan Pie is excellent, despite its positively homey presentation. The Mexican hot chocolate was delicious and monstrous--it probably was more caloric than dinner itself. My wife had the Yogi Spice Tea, which is one of the best herbal teas I've tasted. An excellent post-Dinner hangout.

WITCHES WORK HERE. I would give them less stars if I didn't like that vibe...it goes well with the Victorian house. They all look dressed like homeless young grandmas in that hipstery way that seriously reflects their attitude or I'd keep it to myself. They could be far less rude though. EXTREMELY RUDE! Morton the cat is awesome. Even caught him eating a mouse. Not sure if that is great or gross. The hookah is probably 21+ because we were laughing our asses off for the rest of the night, and I don't regularly smoke but my friend does...they even claim on their menu that there's nothing illegal but they're not saying you won't feel something (or something to that extent). The patio is great. The crazy shrine in the house and the beautiful decor is worth it alone. If you can get past one shitty waitstaff [it does get hard to ignore], this place is great!

The worst! I'm actually writing this review based on an experience I had about a year ago, when I was just visiting Portland. I'm a vegan and at the time I was living in South Florida which is not the friendliest place for vegetarians. So I was still kind of in this mode where I'm sketched out by any restaurant that serves meat and dairy and isn't specific in their menu. So one day I stopped in with my non-vegan friend and the only thing I could find for myself was a hummus platter. I asked the waiter if it was vegan. Now, in retrospect this was probably a dumb question because it's super rare for hummus to not be vegan...but still...I've actually found hummus that contained yogurt...so I wanted to make sure. Especially since I was in a new town and not really sure about anything. This was one of my first experiences eating out in Portland. If the waiter didn't know, all he had to do was say so and find out. It would've been an easy question for the chef. Instead, the jerkoff of a waiter decided to mock me for bugging him with a question like that. He said in a rude and mocking tone "I don't know...is water vegan?" I guess he thinks it's funny to embarrass and antagonize his patrons...I was dumb founded. I mean...really? Just because I asked? It's not like I was being rude...I asked my question and I was very polite about it. I mean...what did I do to deserve that? I can't freaking believe that I actually ordered the hummus. It was totally disgusting anyway. My friends ordered some drinks which were equally gross. I paid my tab and left a tip for two cents. I'm never going in there again and I advice everyone to stay away from this dump!!!! Especially vegans!!!

I was really pleased with my experience at Pied Cow. My husband and I went there on our 1 year anniversary. I had gone with him once before when we first started dating. They have great food and the best chi that I've ever tasted. This last visit We ordered a salmon plate (salmon, cucumber, crackers, tomatoes, with a cream cheese spread) As well as the hummus dip (hummus, cucumber, carrot sticks, pita bread, and an olive on top) Both plates were amazing and very decently priced. This last experience we sat outside and tried the vanilla flavored hookah. I have never smoked hookah before so I don't have anything to compare it to. I do know you have to be 21 and some people find that to be bothersome. I on the other hand, don't care. I did enjoy the seating outside. It has a very cozy feel to it. A little cold this time of year though. The inside has a cozy feeling as well. This doesn't matter a whole lot about the restaurant it's self but I also really liked the way the waitresses dressed. =) I can't really think of anything I don't like about the place.

When a girl asks before even sitting down if you serve chocolate cake, and if it's rich and chocolatey, the correct answer is not "yes" if what you really have is dried out, stale, crumbly, chocolate cake. True, it may have been rich and chocolatey on Monday night. But this was Friday. And on Friday the frosting cracked off and the cake crumbled. You do not fuck with a girl requesting chocolate cake. I was in an emergency situation and Pied Cow failed me big time. They also don't serve boozey coffee. WTF, they're a coffee/dessert place and they don't even have a little kahlua to put in my latte? Lame.

I've been to this Portland institution only twice in my nearly 5 year tenure in this lovely city. The first was nearly three years ago; a coffee date with a music lover who offered me a ticket to Sasquatch festival if we clicked. We geeked out over indie rock while sipping on some mocha's and a cheese plate. Yes, we wound up going to Sasquatch together and getting wonderfully sunburnt. My second visit was just a week ago with friends for a birthday celebration of dessert and hookah. We'd just experienced the monumentally slow service of Hoda's and definitely needed some coffee to perk up. Even though the outside seating was pretty busy, as our group had shrank from 7 to 4, we managed to snag a table just as another party left. Otherwise we probably would have had to sit out in the cold next to some inadequate tiki torches. Two Mexican mocha's, one "gringo" mocha, and a hazelnut latte were to be required! Mango hookah was shared all around. Yay that they had reasonable prices; $16 didn't seem too high to me at least, and split between 4 people was not bad at all. I know of at least one hookah bar in Portland that has a two-person limit per pipe, and luckily this is not the case here. Now, someone just should've told the birthday boy that you don't inhale the special flavored tobacco you smoke from a hookah sooner, I'm sure it would have saved him an inevitable sore throat (one that I sadly got too. Eh, I'm not a smoker, what can I say?). For a coffee and dessert house, I don't know, I think the dessert menu was underwhelming. Or maybe I just wasn't pleased with the item my boyfriend and I shared; a banana and nuetella crepe served ~flambe~ with rum. I was not expecting the fire, and I think I literally uttered, "Oh shit, our dessert is on fire!" when the waitress brought it out. I guess we didn't let the alcohol burn out long enough because all we could taste of the crepe was the rum, and it was not good rum. My friend's chocolate ganache peanut butter teacup concoction was pretty decadent and delicious. I helped him out with a few bites because, you know, we were all still pretty full from dinner...or something. Out of the two places we dined at this night, Pied Cow wins for service and ambiance, but only slightly. We had a server slow to bring the check here as well. At this point in time it was 11:30, and we were all dead tired despite the coffee, I was about to fall asleep right there on the patio. So another member of our party went to seek out the check, and found the server coming out with it. It shouldn't be this much work to pay a bill at a restaurant people!

I think of The Pied Cow as a gateway to Bohemia. Fun in pre-bar-age college, but even then, it reminded some friends too much of high school. Many years later, it can still be a nice place to take my parents and friends from less urban areas, to give them a little glimpse into the funky/cute/cozy world they imagine I inhabit.

The Pied Cow is a long-standing southeast favorite. Occupying the downstairs of an old dimly-lit Victorian building, the Pied Cow offers dessert fare that includes pie a la mode and home made peanut butter cup truffle. You can also get a selection of savory nibbles, too. The biggest draw is the sizable patio. Smoke your hookah here and eat a sweet treat with it. The Pied Cow also wins by staying open late.

Gather 'round boys and girls! It's time for another rousing tale of how Michelle doesn't understand the hype! This is happening more often than I'd care to admit. Maybe I am culturally challenged like the famous PDX eatery employee's email said. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. That's all quite possible. I'm not going to rule it out. Regardless, maybe I missed the boat by not going here in high school. See? I'm trying to find fault in me. Then again, I'm almost certain my high school self wouldn't have really cared for it either. While I am a huge fan of Victorian houses, I'm not a huge fan of dessert or hookah. Creepy dolls on the staircases? Not so much. I do know JW's bean dip he ordered sucked. Yes, I still ate it anyway, but it was more mindless munching than actual desire to ingest it. I also know the alcohol selection wasn't anything to go out of my way for. The shot of espresso and beer were decent, but the highlight was taking the time to make a volcano out of it when I poured the espresso in. I had a lake to clean up, but it was worth it for entertainment value. I'm not going to die if the invitation arises to head out there again, but I'd rather just chill out in my own dining room [or yours] with the booze of my choosing. Hell, I'll even bake you a cake.

I have recently come to terms with the fact that yes, after years in Portland, I have slowly adopted bourgie and hipster tendencies. Pied Cow is one of them. It's a quirky (hah, way overused adjective, but fitting) little place that has really good desserts. It's best for a group of friends to hang out or a nice end to a date. Cool outside, a little romantic inside. It's so dim you sometimes can't see a damn thing. Again, the desserts. Why bother going to Pix? The service is very much hit or miss, though. I can tolerate neglect, but I can't stand for rude wait staff. WTF, I'm here to give you money. The best thing about the Cow is hookah/shisha. It's a little pricey, but it's a nice way to spend an evening with friends. We need us some shisha proliferation.

Here's a naughty little not-so-secret for Sunday: Once upon a time, I had a big thing for crunchy hippie boys. I went to school in Santa Cruz. It was bound to happen. So when I reach the vicinity of a large flock of grizzly-bearded, hacky-sacking, political freedom-studying, funk music-dancing, gee-I-don't-know-how-we'll-kill-the-half-hour-before-the-movie-ing men-folk, I sit up a little straighter. It's a trip down memory lane as much as anything hormonal. That's what Pied Cow reminded me of. The stage was already set for this kind of an association because the big objection to coming here was that it was full of teenagers. But we made it here anyway and managed to snag a table at the coveted heated patio. As the group deliberated over hookah flavors, I noticed that a certain kind of man kept appearing in search of a table. My kind of guy, back in what used to be very much my kind of place with wines a-plenty (OK, that still holds) and ashtrays liberally added at every table. I was somewhat concerned that I would need to send a text to a lifeline pleading, "Help, stuck in my sophomore year. Please send incense." The snap back to reality? A quick read of the menu, and the realization that I was never able to afford this kind of an evening when I was in college. At least my house wine, at $3.50, was very reasonable. Also, the single server who manned the outdoor seats was kinda nice but kinda harried. For what reason, I couldn't tell. At some point, I determined that I didn't want to waste very much time reading the boys, you know? Plus, his penmanship on the bill was like reading Aramaic. Maybe more stars will pop up once I try the fabled desserts. Or if I wake up to find myself 19 again.

After a hearty meal and a few games of feisty scrabble my friend suggests the Pied Cow for desserts. He exclaims eagerly that he's always wondered about this place, has heard great things, and is tortured when he passes by it on the bus. Sounds convincing to me. It's around 10 o'clock when we arrive. We're promptly seated. A moment of silence ensues as all three of just take in our surroundings. Wow, creepy! I actually got out of my seat to peer around the corner where an ominous red glow has caught my attention. I am delighted and horrified to see a stairwell filled with an odd collection of items and statues. I wonder what they're hiding? Hmmm? What we ordered: My friend orders the Marionberry pie w/ a mexican chocolate mocha. My bf and I decide to share the chocolate cake that's served with vanilla ice cream and a shot of espresso you pour over and house coffee. Very tasty and satisfying desserts. Our dessert was delightful, perfectly decadent and enjoyably tantalizing as your mouth is greeted with a mixture of cold meets hot. The coffees were enjoyable too. My friend seemed to really enjoy the musical selection and I'm a big fan of old creepy stuff. I'm waiting until summer to head back, this time to enjoy their patio seating.

This is one of my favorite places in Portland. The building is amazing - beautiful colors, tacky but fun decor and feels like you are stepping in to a Victorian themed fantasy novel by Mercedes Lackey. I have always had friendly encounters with the wait staff, as well as prompt service. Their spicy bean dip is yummy and a friend got a salad that looked divine. (next time I'll try it!) I am also a fan of the iced coffee and the icecream espresso drinks. Most of all I enjoy the Pied Cow Coffeehouse because of the atmosphere. The building is beautiful, the outside seating area is comfy and quiet and it is a nice place to visit with friends and enjoy the city of Portland.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Sorry for the shout, but it's how I feel. :-) I live in this SE neighborhood, and the Pied Cow is, by FAR, my favorite place. The food is delicious and served in generous portions. My favorite is the hummus platter with cucumbers and tomatoes, although the cheese plate is absolutely heavenly as well. And the tea........oh my gosh, it's flavorful but not overpowering. Some friends and I sat in the garden one evening for quite a long time, and must have had 8 pots of tea.......our waiter was friendly and didn't get grumpy about making multiple trips, even when we stayed so long that we wanted to order more food! For dessert you absolutely MUST try the Peanut butter cup! My indoor experience was good here too, but it's a bit crowded inside. However, I love the decor. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the service is a bit faster inside. I recommend it for very small groups, or for couples. Probably not the greatest for kids or large groups.

My review thus far is limited and will be updated as I return, but I'll focus on the inside. A great place for a first date because it is dark, and the servers strike that great balance between attentive and invisible. Nice drink list (beers and wine) and the food is all meant to be shared. Will go back to try out the patio!

Best when you want a good place to catch up with a friend. Charming mix of antiques, art and found objects makes it feel a bit Alice in Wonderland, an escape from normal life where you can kick back, talk slow and giggle. There's a great patio with cheerful christmas lights surrounded by bushes for that secret garden feeling. Not a study spot and difficult to get a big group into. A solid tea selection and tasty appetizers and desserts. I demolished the baked brie with cherries and nuts with a friend. I long to try the hazelnut banana nutella crepes but haven't found an excuse yet...

I'd always heard people rave about the Pied Cow. It was EXTREMELY cute looking. It's in an older looking house on Belmont. They have a pretty large outdoor area, which I am guessing used to just be the backyard of the house. It feels very relaxing to sit out there, under trees, sipping on some wine. I give it three stars mainly because it lacks vegan food options. There's some hummus and pita, but I would love to see some vegan desserts since everyone seems to rave about the desserts there. The options did look delicious, but I couldn't eat any of them, however I had no trouble drinking two glasses of their sangria, filled with delicious fruit. I wouldn't come here again to eat, but I would definitely go for a happy hour.

"Sure, he sounds funny. But I donno." "Haven't you bagged every tall welder on the planet yet?" "Fine. I'll meet him." I pick him up. He doesn't believe in cars. I bring my dogs, for conversation fodder. Angelina Jolie, the Shi-Tzu, pulls off her collar and runs towards Belmont on the way in. He plucks her up, holds her awkwardly, like a child clutching a baby, kind of stiff and proud, wearing a baseball cap that looks like a beanie with a brim. Grinning in victory and grimacing with minimal remaining small dog tolerance in the same expression. We sit on the picnic benches in the garden and talk, share a glass mixing bowl of kava tea, a mezzo platter and apricot hooka. There's something kind of sexy about sharing a hooka on a first date. At one point, he gets relaxed, puts his sandaled feet on my knee. I take it as a sign that he likes me - a brazen move, our first PDA. I wait inside for the bathroom, and I pay, since we've seen a server for only a few fleeting moments, which was fine. From the stained glass window, I see him pick up Angelina and dangle her in front of him like a pizza dough. It appears they are having a serious discussion about their future together, and how this is going to work out. One has the distinct feeling that he outwits her. We haven't been back, but it's a good memory for sure.

Ah Pied Cow, you're so cute with your name and your hookahs and your patio. Unfortunately you can't live on those alone! This place tries a little too hard to be bohemian and hip but comes across as pretentious and quasi-touristy. The patio and interior are nice, but the the food is a bit forgettable. Some of the staff are a little snobby in a, 'hey man I'm an artist, I can't be helpful' kind of way. That said, though I definitely wouldn't make it a regular jaunt, I feel like the Cow is one of those must-visit Portland places. See for yourself.

We showed up around 8pm on a Friday and there was no wait and plenty of outdoor tables available, but when we left an hour or so later there was a wait. We just stopped by dessert but I would love to come back for hookah. Their outdoor yard is such a hidden gem, it feels so secluded even though Belmont is just on the other side of the brush. Service was good. Actually I thought service was crappy for the last half hour we were there since nobody would come to our table so we could ask for a check. Then someone came by and we asked for the check and they picked it up off our table where it had been sitting for who knows how long. Someone very stealthily set it down without us noticing and the dusky light did not help its visibility. So 4 stars it is for a yummy rootbeer float. I definitely want to come back to try one of their other desserts or some food... everything I saw others around us getting looked great.

This place is super-cool. I don't think there's any more enjoyable experience in Portland than sitting outside at the Pied Cow in summer time. This place is always lively and has a very authentic character going for it. I'm not a huge dessert person, but I love their peanut butter and chocolate cup. It's so rich that I feel sick after getting halfway through it, but man is it good. I can't comment on the food because I've never tried it here. Coffee seems mediocre, but acceptable. This place is all about the atmosphere and outdoor seating.

The staff here is a bit off, to say the least. Our server was heavily sedated. And not, "Hey man, I'm stoned," sedated. I'm pretty sure the Pied Cow provides occupational training to recently released mental patients. Serious.

I've wanted to check out this place since moving here a few years ago and finally got around to it yesterday afternoon (a Saturday) - and I'm so glad I did. The inside of this lovely old house is just so pretty and sweetly decorated... reminded me of one of the "weed cafes" in Amsterdam. We decided to sit out on the huge cute back/side patio and play some cards while waiting for our food. The atmosphere is all-around really relaxing, and there's table service (!) - something I wasn't sure about 'til we got there. Our server was SO NICE and friendly, it added to the chill feel of the place for sure - thanks nice server guy! My partner had the rose lemonade and it was, in a word - AMAZING! I had a simple iced Americano but it was really good, nice and strong. We shared the hummus/tzatziki and pita plate which was nice & big, lots of pita, carrot sticks and cucumber - definitely a decent portion for the price ($7), and the hummus was deeeeelicious! There were a few people trying out the hookahs - they looked kinda cool, and easy enough to figure out for folks that might feel kinda intimidated - it looked like the server just brought it out to them, showed them how to use it and that was that. They have tons of stuff I really want to go back and try - mainly the DELISH-sounding desserts and $3 pint-glasses of Sangria... mmmm, looked seriously yum. Yup, I'll definitely go back, and soon.

Felt like a back yard going away party. It's very cool atmosphere. The hedges block the street well and you really feel like you are in a back yard. Had a few drinks and made fun of some people around me. Just like any other backyard I am in.

When I visited Portland, I heard that this place is quite famous here. So, I went to this place to check it out with my friend. However, I had the worst service that I have ever had before. Based on what I heard from a waitress that was in charge of serving my table, I thought that I could eat some tiny food that I have brought with drinks I ordered. When another guy took me the drinks I ordered, he very rudely said " you guys can't eat the sandwich. It's our policy." I might have stopped eating the food if the guy talked to me in any sort of understandable way. But, he was just too rude. The guy just left after saying that. After I got that guy, I couldn't stay there and finish my drink that I ordered. I called another waiter to cancel my order or find any way to handle this situation. But, from this guy, I got another horrible feeling and even humiliated. "You don't want to bring any food in a restaurant." Without trying to resolve this situation, he also just left letting me behind even laughing at me. Three dollars steamed cranberry juice that I ordered. It is not big money, but I can't just give that money to them. That's why what I tried was to talk to servers to figure it out, but the thing that came up to me was humiliating service and scoffing at me. I got humiliating service ever. Why would it be so much more expensive to get a drink in that sort of coffeeshop than buying a bottle of cranberry juice in a grocery store? As people might know, that is because human service is included. I would never go to this place again.

The only place I've ever been that you have to be 21+ to smoke hookah. This defies all logic when the government legal age for tobacco is 18. I really loved this place until I tried to bring an underage friend here. Disappointing.

dont go expecting fast service, dont go expecting plush anything. go expecting a relaxing time and lazing about in someone elses back yard and you'll be good to go. bring your dog, and your smokes or get ready for a hookah.. excellent way to unwind on the way home after work grind. love their outdoor patio.

so i love this place! been here several times and it offers many things to many people! they have an amazing outside area when we have a lovely Portland night or even when it rains. I love the funkiness of the inside too! the staff is friendly and helpful! they also offer hookahs for rent if you like that. it also makes a great first date place...if they can't handle this unique space tell them to move on buster!! check it out, but beware...the dessert helpings are big...so share!

This place is glorious for a slow and warm night in the garden. Shady, peaceful space under the trees, with tiki torches. Feels very well shielded from the hustle of B'mont. Nice long list of bottled beers. Hummus platter is always good, though comes out different each time. I've never done the hooka thing, it looks like a pain in the a*s. This is a nice place to bring out of town fam, even if you've got a youngster, as long as you are not in a rush. Spotty service. Be prepared to go stick your head into the kitchen to order or get your check if the garden is unattended. And the house is haunted. It's cool and spooky inside.

Meh. Kinda cool atmosphere/house. I could definitely do without their music selection. Outside patio would be cool if it weren't filled with smoke. Service/menu was okay.

    v. delicious brownie sundae but really shotty service. sat in the semi-dark for 30 minutes before my gestures were noticed. other than that, i'd go back, but sit closer to the light/the server.
