Always slow, always cramping in an hour after eating. Staff has changed to non English speaking bar staff that is very unhelpful. Meh, price one pays for cramps and American Chinese food & good Sweet & Sour Soup!!

Boy, this place has seen better days. When you enter the place there was a bucket on the floor for catching the rain water coming through the ceiling - never a good sign. We ordered take out and really had low expectations for the food. Well, it lived up to our expectations. The mushu pork was OK, but the pancakes were dry and brittle. The General Tsaos chicken tasted like it was prepared about two days ago - very dry. I would have given them a lower star score, but my expectations were quite low for take out. It was priced right for the quality of the food.

Have you ever bit into a piece of chicken and it tasted almost rotten and dry and you couldn't eat another thing after? Yah, well that was my lunch here the other day. Plus, they reuse, and do not wash in between customers their tea pots... This place is horrible.

Very bad food. The whole time I was eating it I was trying to figure out what supplier they got it from because it was just so cheap. Got general sou's for lunch, the chicken was hard and the sauce was very thick and sat at the bottom of the dish. Even the rice was bad & I'm not trying to complain :( I stopped going to panda express years ago, but this food I wouldn't even rate on pandas level of quality... surprised this place is still open. It's probably because they're the only Chinese restaurant in this area.

I love this place! My husband and I rave to everyone about this place! I have traveled all over and no one compares to their food! We always make this our first stop when we come to Portland !

My husband and 2 other friends ate at Mars before going to the Roadster Show at the Expo Center. Oh the food was not good. we had some egg flower soup wit our meal it was luke warm I had to ask them to get hot 2 times. they must have a new owner. We came in thru the bar and boy the smell of smoke but I m sure it was the peoples clothes as you cant smoke in there but there were a few seedy looking people look like they were on drugs. we will not go back there. Food was spendy for what you got not worth our time or money.

my "general tso" was frozen breaded chicken breast that had been microwaved, chopped with a canned sauce poured over the top.... not mixed in. I wouldn't even make something that bad at home if I was extremely stoned and desperate.

I wouldn't say I was a fan of this restaurant because their customers are more towards to non-Asian population. My family and I were the only Asian customers in the restaurant. The reason why we stopped by here was because we wanted to eat something before we hit the road back to Seattle. I pulled the Yelp App, there it was! At first, we were a bit hesitant to go in because the area was kind of ghetto. But, after driving around the hood, we can't really find another restaurant. We sat down and required a Chinese menu, of course they don't have. And, they were honest about who most of their customers are. We appreciated! However, they let us to order what came up in mind and made it special for us in the kitchen. In addition, they stopped by constantly to check on us and made sure we were satisfied with our meals. My mom, a picky eater, she was happy with the food there actually. She thought the food was actually better than Facing East :-P I guess this is a good compliment.

If I could rate this place with negative stars I would. I was only about three people in the restaurant for lunch. I asked for hot and sour soup but the server gave me egg-flower soup instead. He seemed offended when pointed out the error. Then, to be just totally obvious of lack of ability to service their customers the server tried to give a plate of food I did not order. It was the order from the table one over from me. I will not ever go back to that place.

The only reason I didn't give it 1 star was because the food was decent. Here's the rest of my tip - since my 5% tip I left is way below my standard (I tip very well for quality). 1) don't be a bitch when someone sits at a table in the lounge and asks for a menu. 2) wash your hands when you return from your cigarette breaks.

I'm extremely picky about chinese food, or any asian food for that matter because I do not enjoy seafood, duck, or anything other than chicken, pork, and beef. So when I visited Mars Meadows, I was a bit skeptical. I'm a pretty plain jane girl when it comes to chinese food - mostly just sweet and sour chicken for me. But since coming to Mars, I've tried several dishes Sweet and sour chicken - my favorite Orange chicken - nice natural orange flavor and ALL WHITE MEAT CHICKEN! Mandarin chicken - very strong flavor, but delicious Egg flower soup - delicious without fail! Eggrolls - they're just OK in my opinion Pot stickers - yum and the sauce they are served with is perfect. Sometimes the food is plated very pretty and sometimes its just given to me with the sauce all plopped on. Service has always been friendly. If you're picky about chinese food like me and are looking for some clean, better-than-panda chinese food, then check out Mars Meadows.

We're local and have attended Mar's Meadows dining experience about a dozen times or so (over a 2 1/2 year period). I enjoy writing a review after multiple visits, because I think it's a more well rounded and honest review. I wish there was a seven star review, because then I could give this place an even middle four. I was going to give this place three stars, but the definition of three stars is, "A-OK," which Mar's Meadows is not. It's only OK. This restaurant is never really busy. As throughout most Portland, there are really almost zero fantastic Chinese restaurants, but as most people look for, this food is reasonably priced for the amount of food you receive. Taste of the food from good to bad varies based on what you order. I advise you to let them specifically know if you want your food more or less spicy. Keep in mind most dishes here begin as bland, much as if you are cooking for an elder care home, so start from there if you like it mild. Best thing we've had, which we would rate as "tasty" is the Mongolian Chicken. Good luck on this place. It's not terrible, but it's not great. It's somewhere in between.

We get take out from here about once a month. It's solid standard Chinese food, nothing too special or fancy, but nothing wrong with it either, reasonable prices, big portions. Have never eaten-in but good for take-out. Sadly there is no delivery option.

Whenever I travel to Portland I stay at the Best Western around the corner from Mars Meadows. While there are three or four other restaurants in the immediate area, Mars from day one was my go to place. The food is great and the service is friendly. I highly recommend their pork dishes.

Litterally, I've been going here for years; since I was a young tike learning how to walk and stuffing batteries in my nose. Seriously? It's true - it's my father's favorite place, we're from the area. Either I've gotten too big to where the rice is a small serving, or it looked bigger when I was a kid - maybe they've gotten cheaper, I dont know? The food is decent, it's the only Chinese restaurant around the North Portland Area (Americanized) - and I swear the same waitress has been there as long as I've been alive. I don't care much for the chicken, it's too dry - but the beef and whatnot (snowpeas, broccoli) it's yummy. I've had better, but to avoid traveling elsewhere when in need for a dinner it's within distance; so I'll settle. The service here is super quick! We ordered and the food was served within minutes - maybe that's a good or bad thing? I do know the carrots still had a raw taste to it. I was there the other night for the first time in 8 years... The decor hasn't changed whatsoever, so each time I'm there its a flashback to my childhood. I guess this is the only place that has yet to change in my lifespan here on earth, hrm. The place has survived for the longest time, so props to that. However, I think the male waiter's customer service skills needs to cheer up a bit. "HUH?! I'm not your waiter, she your waiter, she give you your check." Maybe I've grown up to be a bit impatient, but dude - I'm not kid anymore, be nice or no tip!

My mother and I came here last night for dinner. It was one of my last days being able to eat eggs before I begin my egg free diet so I wanted some yummy pan fried noodles! I ordered the chicken chow mein with pan fried noodles and the crab puffs as an appetizer. The hot tea had a little bit of a funny taste to, but the crab puffs weren't too bad. They were a little over cooked but they weren't terrible (however I've had better from a food cart). The meal finally came and was a HUGE portion. As with most Chinese restaurants I expected our meals to be accompanied by smaller plated to eat off of, but no, not here. My plate looked like I had gone through an all you can eat buffet line and took full advantage of the "all you can eat" part!!! I dug to the bottom of the mountain of food in front of me only to find a very small portion of pan fried noodles. The noodles were way too crispy and extremely under cooked; they tasted like they had been sitting out all day waiting for someone to order them! On top of the under cooked noodles was a dump truck portion of vegetable with a few large chunks of white meat chicken. The entire plate of food was completely covered in some sort of sauce that didn't have much flavor. All in all the meal was kind of disappointing! The food, with the exception of the crab puffs, was bland and flavorless. I'll probably try Mar's Meadows again, but I won't be getting the Chicken Chow Mein, that's for sure!

Gross dried out food. Give me some chicken fries from the BK nextdoor and I could dump soy sauce onit and have tastier "Chinese Food" meal. 50 great thai food joints and zero ediable chinese food. - welcome to NoPo. Ps don't go near Lung Fung either.

We come here from time to time because they have decent American style Chinese food and it's reasonably clean, plus the drinks are strong and relatively cheap. Mars Meadow just rolled out a new menu with simpler options and a new focus on locally grown veggies. It tastes good, and looks nice, and there's a lot of it! It's not going to impress your friends, and it only has a touch of authenticity, but it's tasty and plentiful, and it's a nice change of pace from the places that are trying too hard. We had to debate between 3 and 4 stars because of the new menu, before it was a 3 and a half, now it's taken a step up with the new offerings and the fresher local food being a part of their efforts. The deep-fried foods and the soups are still the best dishes they serve, but their stir fry is improving, which is nice for folks who would like to eat a little healthier. We had Udon soup and one of the combos, and they allowed us to upgrade the pork chow mein in the combo to chicken for a buck; no complaints there. The Udon is thick, square flour noodles in a delicious and savory broth, with a pile of fresh green onion on top. It was positively delicious, and very filling. Even with the add-ons it was under $20, but they do offer more expensive dishes including a new build-your-own combo-for two, for $20. The staff always seems to be running here and there, and they're sometimes a bit slow getting you started with hot tea and soup, but they do a good job of making you feel appreciated by the time you're done. It's definitely worth the trip to Delta Park every once in awhile, and sometime we'll have to check out the lounge, it sounded like quite the party in there. I wouldn't drive out from Beaverton especially to eat here, but it's worth crossing the bridge for a change of pace.

This is not a Chinese restaurant -- it is a restaurant ran by Chinese people! The service was horrible, the tables and condiments were coated in oil soot and the menu was a joke! If you are looking for large plates of greasy, starchy food then eat here -- if you are looking for any semblance of Asian food, go to Safeway and get something from the deli instead of this place!

Lover's of this place--from Venus. Hataz? Well, hataz turn on Mars!!! And let's face it, in all walks of life, haters come in ALL stripes. Haters, blockers, pretendahs, chumps, straight up fools, jitterbugs, ooooh-weee! The Good Lawd must sho' love himself some hataz, he sure enabled enough of 'em to be existin', hey? (note: just a little stream of consciousness free-stylin'. Bear w/me.) Now let's talk about LOVE. and all the terrific things Mars Meadows does right. Mars appeared on the inauspicious lot, next to Baxter Auto parts and Shari's, back sometime in the late 80s. Is it "authentic" Chinese--- as if any would even know it if it hit us right between the eyes. I am confident from what I've heard and personally seen that Mars Meadows is significally cleaner, and to all-around levels of accountability than "real, authentic" eateries... As i've mentioned a time or ten, my all-time gold-standard of Asian eateries is their shrimp fried rice....I'm happy to report Mars' is man-tastic! Szechuan is mighty spicy as well! Double points!!! So My good friends at Mar's Meadows, in the immortal words of Stevie Wonder, teacher's, keep on teachin'..... preachers, keep on preachin............ and the rest of us, we'll keep on lovin' the Meadows...

BEST AMERICANIZED CHINESE IN NORTH PORTLAND/WEST VANC FOR SURE! Ok, so I have had a little extra time on my hands recently, and I have been dining at some places I've wanted to try for a while. I live in North Portland, so while I'm willing to travel, it's nice when something is close. It is a bit quirky and in Delta park which isn't a sexy location, but if you live in No. Po. you know what I mean when I say finding good ole after work take home chinese is freaking hard to find, I mean, read the reviews for Lung Fung. So here are the goods: -Clean, and while dated in decor, it doesn't make you feel like the things have actually been there since those designs' original heydays -Not romantic, but not a turn off either, (just funny enough to make you sort of pleasantly amused) and there are good snuggly booths, good place to dine with friends or after a few beers. -Service is super friendly this is definitely an american chinese type place, but that's what we came here for right, otherwise we'd be somewhere off Powell near 82nd. -Quick- never waited more than 10 min to get food obviously fresh out of the pan food. -Fresh- this is no farmer's market or anything, but for a place in Delta Park that delivers the goods, you can get normal white meat that didn't come from the "other" bucket at the butcher. (Can't speak for the Beef, haven't had it, but looks just as fresh on other's plates) -Dishes have tons of sauce, but just enough to make it pleasant, any more would be too much, but I wasn't detered, plus a point for not super greasy being as most items are deep fried. -Overall they deserve a shout out, in another place they might only get 3 starts, and in places where it would be gauche and not funny to have ironic decor, this would probably get a 2.75, but when the food is fresh, quick, doesn't make you sick, cleanly prepared and served, and while not cheap, also not expensive, in a veritable desert of Chinese food, they get a good 4, (would be 5 if I wasn't a total snob) for BASIC AMERCICAN Chinese food- in far north portland enjoy.

As everyone knows, food rating is subjective. This restaurant will get mixed review, b/c the Chinese food (if you want to call it that) is westernised, and the restaurant is cater to the western population. When you enter this restaurant, you would be hard pressed to find any Chinese people eating at this establishment. The only thing they did right IMO is the rice. With that being said, the service was horrible, and in all fairness, there was only one waitress on duty, but she never came by our table to check to see how things were, nor did she refilled our glass with water (which was empty). The good news is that no one got sick from eating here. The waitress is so used to dealing with the Non-Chinese population, that she said in Chinese that I was cheap to a co-worker behind her b/c I left $4 tip for a $33 bill (I gave her $37)right in front of my face. Just think what she says about you behind your back (or right in front of you in Chinese). I wouldn't be surprise if I see this restaurant on "Kitchen Nightmare", "Dinner Impossible", or "Restaurant Stakeout". Only came here b/c it was close to the hotel I was staying at. Lesson learned, drive 30 minutes into the heart of Portland to get real authentic Chinese food. For me, tried this place once, never again.

Props to this place for carrying on the tradition of order by numbers. Make sure to specify when you order chow mein to get the pan fried noodles otherwise you'll get the crunchy bits which are good in a different way. Everything is heavy on the celery...why? Because celery is cheap and so are Chinese people. The egg foo yung is mediocre here, but if you're at PIR late in the afternoon trying to avoid I-5 traffic nothing is better than this place out here for American Chinese food.

Time warp alert! I love the '70s, too, but keep on truckin'! I've heard that this place has been around for decades, but it looks (on the inside) as if it were a former Burger King or Taco Bell with their funky booths. I ordered chow fun for lunch and was served thin noodles. Their average customer, from the looks of things, probably wouldn't know better. Service was "strange." What saves this from being a one-star rating was that the food was somehow edible.

  • Grey W.

For American-Chinese food this place is average. Nothing exceedingly spectacular here. The food was "alright". The service was "alright". The atmosphere was "alright". You get my drift? The only reason I give this two stars and not three is because it's in the middle of nowhere. I wouldn't have even known this pocket of Portland existed if my party hadn't taken me out out there. Also, there is no option of getting your food without MSG. The portions are pretty big. We ended up taking a lot home. Would I come back? Maybe.

I live in NoPo and am very frustrated at the lack of Chinese-American cuisine in the area. I get hankerings for sweet n' sour and greasy chow mein, and my husband and I recently went on the hunt to get me some for lunch. We ended up in Delta Park at Mar's Meadows. Upon entering, the hostess (and only server) was sitting on the waiting bench yammering on the phone. She quickly told whoever was on the other line "hold please," took us to our seats, dropped off some menus, and went back to the phone. I was quick to decide: sweet n' sour chicken, shrimp chow mein, and my husband picked out a beef dish (Mongolian, I believe). I was expecting these to be three, full plates, from which we'd grab our fill and take the rest home for dinner. I don't eat pork, so the combination/meal plates are never an option for me (no substitution!) When the hostess came back to take our order, she brought us water and a pot of tea. After telling her what we would like, she told us "you know, that's a lot of food" looking at us, expecting us to change our order. "It's ok. We'll get take-out boxes if we can't eat it all" (which I definitely wasn't expecting to). I was getting twitchy in my seat, anxious to grub on some sweet n' sour soaked pineapple, and slurp up some greasy chow mein noodles. I asked my husband, "I wasn't looking too closely, but did you see anywhere on the menu that they're MSG free?" Nope. And there were no signs posted in the door, either. I finished my glass of water and set it on the edge of the table. The food quickly came - three large plates for us to pile servings onto our own individual plates. It all looked amazing...but the chow mein was missing something: noodles. Whaaa? There were decent sized shrimp on a bed of bean sprouts and large vegetables. I poked to the bottom of the plate, where they had a handful of crunchy noodles as a serving bed. About this time, a woman at the next table calls the waitress over to send back her hot n' sour soup...which was not hot. My husband and I looked at each other, shrugged, and began to eat, assuming this to be Mar's Meadows version of chow mein. The beef plate lacked spice (minus the peppers if you ate one of them), the pineapple from the sweet n' sour tasted like they'd been soaking in pure alcohol (rather alarming, since I'm expecting), and the large baby corn and mushrooms from the "chow mein" plate tasted watery, like they were fresh from a can. My husband ate the baby corn from the beef plate and said it tasted as if it'd been soaking in beer. The chicken was dry, but the sweet n' sour sauce was good. We ate our fill, and sat patiently waiting for the waitress to come by. Once she did, she finally refilled my glass of water and we asked for "to go" boxes. She came back, filled them for us, brought us our tab and a couple fortune cookies. We paid, grabbed our bag of leftovers, and headed for home. Our house is a 15 min drive, and by the time we got back, we were hungry. Definitely MSG.

Went here for lunch today and really enjoyed it. Good solid menu, priced very affordable and quite tasty. I thought the service was excellent! It's just the standard Chinese food that you find anywhere else with a few minor differences. I thought the hot and spicy soup was some of the best I have ever had. I had planned to go to the Mexican place next door but decided on Chinese instead and am glad I did.

My housemates and I tried Mar's Meadows for the first time last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't speak for the dine-in quality, but the take-out was great. A ton of food, and fairly friendly for a college-student budget. Super fast too... our order was ready for us when we arrived 10 minutes after calling in. Only complaint would be that it was a little skimpy on the meat... but there was plenty of veggies, and the meat was of good quality.

Mars Meadows is one of Portland's greatest Icon's. It has survived in the same location at Delta Park for many decades. The food is traditional American style Chinese. I have eaten there many times and have enjoyed every last meal without exception. I have never been able to eat the entire meal and the price was more than reasonable. I also take the leftovers home and have a second meal. What a wonderful place!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
