This is the most excellent place for Chinese food, both Cantonese and Mandarin styles, the owners Chester and Nancy are awesome, they have the most tasty and clean food, it's not the fanciest place but it has the best food and service. If you like steaks like I do, you have to try theirs, I especially like the Hong Kong steak medium rare, it is the most wonderful......getting hungry again thinking of Chester's cooking :) They also have a bar that serves up good stiff drinks, the lady bartender named Jeanie makes the best and most wonderful cocktails, Jeanie's family used to own this restaurant when it used to be called Black Forest Restaurant about 10 years ago, good food good service and good price and good patrons, it reminds me of the show Cheers every time I go in there on the weekends :)

four years later and the place is still "solid". Not much has changed in four years, still a great s.e. portland value.

This is the closest Chinese place to our house, so it's convenient. The food is consistent and pretty tasty. The Kung Pao chicken isn't anything spectacular, which is disappointing, because that's always our go-to. Usual other favorites here are Golden Dynasty Chow Mein, General Tso chicken, crab puffs, shrimp egg rolls, cashew chicken. We were not a fan of the Mongolian beef, waaaay too many onions and green onions, hardly anything else. You get a ton of food for the price. My husband and I spend like $45 on many options, then we'll eat Chinese every night for the rest of the work week..

I am taking away one star from my previous review because initially service was poor and the dish I ordered was bland. We arrived and stood for several minutes waiting before someone acknowledged us and offered a booth. Then, staff was slow, and we were asked by two different staff members is we would like something to drink besides water. Communicate with each other, please. My date ordered the kung pao chicken which she enjoyed very much. I ordered something new to me, barbecued pork Fun Shee. Both dishes arrived within 5 minutes of ordering. My Fun Shee was a bowl of nicely cooked but still crunchy, fresh veggies, and a small sampling of pork, most of which was near the bottom of the bowl. It was very much lacking in flavor. The all but clear tiny noddles were in a chicken broth, according to the menu but frankly the entire dish needed something that it was definitely lacking. I will not order Fun Shee ever again, because it was not fun. Thinking of ordering the fried shrimp appetizer for $11.25 next time. I love shrimp, and the menu says I'd get 18 for that price. A little rice and I'd be happy.

It was good. I went around 10pm, ordered the szechwan chicken, as per the waitress' recommendation, and liked it. I also liked that the bar area was quiet (no loud music, that is). People could chat and enjoy each other's company. I will go back again.

I (by nature!) do not tend to frequent Chinese restaurants with the words "And AMERICAN FOOD" on their signs. I did, however, decide to take a chance on the Golden Dynasty - hoping for decent food - at best - but completely expecting the worst. I must say, I was COMPLETELY TAKEN by surprise!!! The food at GD is pretty awesome for (Americanized) Chinese. I usually eat here 2 times a month with my family. My mom is only attracted to bad Chinese food. So she is in complete "nirvana" whenever we eat here. My 2 children (ages 3 & 6) LOVE the basic kid-standards (Soup, Rice, BBQ Pork with Sweet & Sour AND Pan-Fried Noodles). The portions are HUGE and CHEAP!! My mom (usually) gets the Pork Chow Mein -or- the Cashew/Almond Chicken. I enjoy spicy - so I HIGHLY recommend the Kung Pao Beef and the Twice cooked Pork!!! I have also tried the curry and I enjoyed that, as well. The GD also has a FULL bar. They offer "Happy Hour" drinks. They REALLY booze up their well-drinks - Which I also HIGHLY recommend ordering!!! The staff is really friendly, the atmosphere isn't super exciting - but who cares about the décor if the food is good and the place is clean, right!?!?!?!?! The service is also very fast. The food comes out hot and fresh!!! I am glad that I took a chance on the GD, not only do they offer great/cheap food but it's also close to home - it's a win-win!!! I highly recommend this place to anyone!!! P.S. When I first tried this place, I ordered TAKE-OUT. While I was waiting, I was chatting with a man who had been eating here for 20 years!!! He said the food was always great and consistent and has been for the 20 years he had been eating here. He stated his in-laws were Chinese and every time they come to visit, this is the only restaurant they insist upon eating at!!!

I get a lot of take out from here. They are always less than $10 per meal, and a meal fills my wife and I up. The food is always fresh. The takeout is a very good deal. The bar is nice as well if you want to get drinks. The only crappy part is they close so early. The good service here will keep them in business long time.

This is the perfect place for cheap and well made drinks and delicious food! Usually my mom, grandma and I dine in the bar area. We have a favorite waitress/bartender(I'm not sure what her name is). She always hooks us up with amazing drinks for like $3 or $4! They have a very friendly staff and always greet you and make you feel welcomed. :) try this place out!

Great food and drinks!! Dinner time can get hectic in the bar and service slows but if your in a hurry for service than go to a drive thru. It's worth the wait. Jeannie and Vin bust ass.

I finally found it!! Delicious Egg Foo Young in Portland!! It only took 8 years and countless tries. The Lo Mein was also awesome. Generous portions. Fast service. Tons of leftovers. My tummy is happy at last:)

The worst service I have eeeever had!!! I called my order in, even gave them 5 min extra before I arrived ... I STILL had to wait an extra 15 minutes - the time they said it would take to cook originally! WTH? Then, after ordering $20 worth of food - I asked for an extra red sauce - they wanted to charge me $.80!!! Are you kidding me!?! I will NEVER be coming back here

Best hot and sour soup in town. Great tofu dishes. Clean and very good service. Szechuan beef was excellent. Very low prices.

My wife and I eat here a couple times a month and love it. In March we threw an anniversary party for my mom and dad's 40th and ordered enough food for 35 people. Everyone LOVED it and where happy to take home left-overs (there was plenty). Staff is always nice, food is always good and plenty.

**lunch review only** Golden Dynasty serves standard Americanized Chinese food. We ordered Kung Pao chicken, beef broccoli, chicken lo mein, & hot & sour soup. I would normally order Szechuan Chicken but Golden Dynasty makes there's just with chicken (or beef) & green onions instead of with the usual veggies. I opted for Kung Pao chicken ($5.50) instead & it was decent for the price. The food is priced cheap so you can't expect amazing quality. I think I waited five minutes for my entire order so it's also food prepared fast. The beef broccoli ($5.50) looked better than it tasted. It wasn't great but adding sweet chili sauce at home helped give it the flavor it was greatly lacking. We wouldn't order this again. Out of the three entrees the chicken lo mein ($5.95) was the best, not spectacular but better than the other two. This is where I found my veggies; mushrooms, onions, carrots, green onions, bean sprouts mixed with lo mein & chicken. Hot & sour soup was mediocre. Pros: cheap lunch entrees served with soup & steamed or fried rice ($5.50-$6.25) generous portions late lunch hours (11am-4pm) = cheaper prices full bar with HH 2pm-6pm & 9pm-close ($2.95 items) friendly & fast service open late (11pm & midnight) large private parking lot Cons: 2/3 of our options lacked flavor no soup included with to go orders (additional $0.50 cents (WTH, that's cheap!) hot & spicy indicator doesn't taste hot or spicy one soup missing from my order; double check bag before leaving This isn't five star quality but I'd say three stars for fast service, large portions, & cheap prices.

Open late, out dated decor, & semi-flavorful food. The portions were plentiful, but there was an overload of cabbage in my dish.

Pretty good and affordable Chinese food. The takeout is fast and they have good lunch specials and happy hour deals.

  • Matt W.

Great atmosphere, very nice employees, and the food was tasty. the lunch specials are very well priced. The bar, lounge, game machines, and TVs were an added bonus. My only concern is efforts to keep the place clean. I would go back though.

The pork fried rice was rice and pork nothing else in it! So boring! The sweet and sour chicken was horrible! The bread on the chicken was the worse I have ever had. The service is nice but the food is bad. Maybe its just me because my husband liked his meal. Take out is fast.

Decent American-Chinese place. Good service, good value. Will return if I am in the mood for some Americanlized Chinese food, but not traditional style!

  • E B.

It was so bad. Nothing that we ordered was consistent with what it should've been. Chicken fried rice? More like chicken and broccoli with white rice mixed in. General Tso's chicken? Soggy sweet and sour chicken with a small amount of a Tso-like sauce splashed in. Mongolian beef? Stir fried beef with nothing else mixed in. Also, no white rice included with any of the entrees. We will definitely not be going back here.

One of my favorite Chinese food places! I have eaten here numerous times over the past 6 years. I'm kinda sad that I haven't written a review of this place before. First of all, their happy hour is one of the best in Portland. Cheap and delicious food, cheap and strong drinks, and did I mention how cheap it is?!? The dining room doesn't have the best layout, and the service in the dining area is not great, but it's good. Still very good prices for big portions. Some of my favorites are mar far chicken, pot stickers, won ton soup, and combo fried rice. I definitely recommend this place, especially for happy hour and if u want strong drinks :)

fantastic sides, loved the fried rice. there beef and broccoli was perfect. usually they always make it tough and crunchy but they do it right here. we received fast and friendly service and will definitely be coming back.

HORRIBLE, I got food poisoning. The only good thing is that it's fast. Meat was chewy and didn't have much flavor. Asparagus wasn't fully cooked. Customer service was horrible. It took us 10 minutes to pay because the lady was talking in the back with the others. Worse place ever, not recommended!

  • Nettie S.

Totally standard Chinese place. Happy hour 2pm to 6pm and 9 to close, as well as daily drink specials. They pour stiff drinks! Food is average Chinese fare, salty and greasy as it should be. Good for people watching in the bar. Video poker in back.

This place is my favorite chinese place in S.E. Portland. I love the mar-mar chicken, nice white meat. They tend to forget the "Pork" on the pork fried rice quite a bit, I usually have to remind them for it. I've been going here for a couple years, maybe once a month, still not tired of it. Probably more like a 3.75 stars, but I rounded up. Crab Puffs could improve, as could the BBQ pork, but I stick with the sweet and sour pork and the mm chicken and I am good to go.

  • Brooke D.

Not sure why so many bad reviews - it's like Chinese food I've had at nearly every Chinese restaurant I've ever been too, except the portions are HUGE! The BBQ pork is much better - instead of thin slices with weird red stuff on them, they are actually thicker slices of grilled pork - yum! The fried shrimp were also good and the drinks were so strong you could barely drink them. The egg flower soup had loads of stuff in it & was very tasty with a little salt. My only real complaint is the fried stuff is SUPER oily. Had chicken, egg roll, & fried shrimp & blotted them all to try to get the grease off to to no avail.

  • Jesse S.

Probably the worst Chinese food on the west coast, and I've been to some bad ones. Lol The service was not good, making this place not worth trying ever! We both got sick from 2 different plates, forks were filthy, drinks were watered down, waitress was a tweaker who had meth still in her nostrils, or something white, lol. Ugh the place makes me sick even thinking about it. Save yourself!!!

  • Walter S.

Dude that reviewed this place 5 stars is nuts. If you think this place is 5 stars, I'd venture a guess that you think Black Angus gives a 5 star steak, and Red Lobster gives you 5 star seafood. It is what it is. It's cheap greasy Chinese food. Nothing more, nothing less. It's priced right where it should be, my to go orders never take more than 10 minutes, the staff is friendly, no complaints. It's not going to knock your socks off, but it's a standard Chinese meal.

You simply don't want to miss the 2P-6P Happy Hour here - its even worth the drive. $2.95 Potstickers, BBQ Pork, Veggie or Shrimp Egg rolls, and many more items 2P-6P. And Mirror Pond beer for $2 or so. The portions are full size, not reduced size and some of these items are $6.95 regular price outside of happy hour. The potstickers were some of the best I've ever had anywhere. The BBQ Pork was excellent with fried rice. Probably 8 slices. Nice portion. I heard they make their own hot Chinese Mustard - it was potent, hot and fresh - great to dip items in. It sits on every table in a yellow mustard bottle. AC for the summer was cranked up - bring a jacket if going in the summer. I can't wait to go back and try some regular menu items. The PRICE can't be beat.

First walking in the staff was slow to even notice us, when we sat down and was given our menus it took them a long time to take our order. I would understand if it was busy and they had things to do but the two girls just sat there talking and didn't check up on us. Anyway, I ordered a dinner combo with hot and sour soup, egg fried rice, mar far chicken (just like a sweet and sour chicken without the sauce), sub gum chow mein (lots of celery, other veggies and crispy noodles underneath) and sweet and sour pork. The hot and sour soup was thin and super spicy. They also served it with crackers??!! Never seen that before. LOL Panda Express has better hot and sour then them. Sorry. The egg fried rice was average, the mar far chicken was good but the fancy name made me believe it was something else. Should of just called it sweet and sour chicken with sauce on the side! The whole thing was just not that good. Quanity over quaility. The portions were huge..so if you have kids and they are not too picky well this is the place to go. You can probably get one dinner combo and feed 4 small kids with it.

Amazing! I drive past it almost everyday and finally decided to go in and place a to-go order. Staff was super friendly, I got tea while I waited for my order to be cooked. I wish they were slower so I could have had more time to drink! Dishes were very reasonably priced and tasted great. Not greasy at all. I have been there five times in about a month and tried multiple dishes and have not been disappointed. I have been to many Chinese restaurants and this was by far the most authentic. Maybe they got a new cook since these other reviews were written? I mean, they were absolutely delicious!

Bland food, boring menu. Took 40 minutes to get a simple take-out order with only 2 people dining in the restaurant. Overpriced for the quality.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
