This place used to be our go-to place to eat in the neighborhood. After a few disappointing visits, we emailed the owner who promptly offered to make it right with us by getting is a meal on the house. Unfortunately, when we went in for our make-up meal, the pizza was burnt on the bottom so bad we couldn't eat it. We pretty much gave up after that. To be fair, I think that the quality of the food went down because of the employees who worked there at that moment in time (same people working every time we had a bad experience) and I don't think any of them work there anymore, but we haven't cared to go back to see. Their Caesar salad and pretzels were awesome every time though and I appreciate the owner trying to make things right with our visit.

First time visiting. We ordered cheesed filled pretzel but most of the cheese was melted away. Cheese sauce for dipping was just right. Sausage lasagne was a little too herby for me. Waiter never came to check on us even though few customers. Still looking for places to eat in our neighborhood.

I was expecting more. I went in this place after reading several 4 star reviews. I'm giving it 2 stars for the food and partially for the service. The only thing to give it 3 stars would be in the interior decoration/ambiance; reused doors for tables, pallet chairs, live music and a very comfortable place. Now for the pizza. We had both the Margarita and pepperoni. For the margarita it was sub par and not near authentic Italian. The basil was shredded over the pizza, the cheese was good, but not creamy and the crust was flat and chewy. I expect the crust to be thin and crispy and the edges to be light and bubbly. They did had toss the dough and use a wood fired oven, but the ingredients they used weren't worth 4 or 5 stars. The pepperoni was good, but the pizza crust, again, lacked. The service was good. The server was nice and when I was deciding on the beer he offered a sample of beer which I hadn't had before. He brought out two glasses of water before we ordered. For the entire dinner we were NOT offered anymore water or another beer. I had hiked earlier in the day and my date played a soccer game. We were thirsty! There was two other groups of people there that left during our visit and it was later in the evening, so it wasn't busy at all. 14" so called "large" pizza was $20! I won't return, but I'm glad I experienced it.

Was not what I expected, in a good way. Step inside and it goes with the "Wood-fired pizza" feel, with all seating and rustic decor made of wood. Great live music from 7-9, seems like a rare good date spot in St Johns, although I wish the lighting was turned down a tad to create a more intimate setting. I absolutely love the wood fired soft pretzels, with Tillamook cheddar baked throughout, and only for $3! The pizza was solid, but I am not partial to wood-fired pizza myself. The lasagna however was delicious, and our service was superb- friendly and attentive. I will also say that I have called just minutes before closing and was allowed to order to go items with no issue, a definite plus in my book!

Importantly, the service here was really good. Our waitress was friendly, prompt, and generally just a very good server. This restaurant as a whole though, seems to awkwardly straddle the line between neighborhood pizza joint and fine Neapolitan pizzeria. The outside of the building has "WOOD FIRED EATS" emblazoned upon it in white block letters and overall the decor is reminiscent of an upscale Neapolitan pizzeria like Oven & Shaker in the Pearl District. They have cocktail menu that includes several house-infused spirits and the full name of the restaurant is "Girasole Restaurant and Bar" All of the above, and the prices ($13-19 for a 14" -- exactly the same range as Oven & Shaker) gave us the impression that we would be getting a fine Neapolitan style pizza and have a full selection of top-shelf cocktails available. The cocktails, although they do have infused spirits that give the impression of a full selection, are limited to only what they have on the menu. I considered ordering a dry gin martini with their infused gin, but they didn't have dry vermouth; I considered a Manhattan, but again, no sweet vermouth. The pizza we ordered was $17. It tasted okay, but wasn't what we were expecting. The crust was very thin and very flaccid --deck oven New York style -- instead of the bubbly and chewy crusted, wood fired Neapolitan pizza we were expecting. The pizza was a little greasy too. That could be caused by a few things, but I think using part-skim mozzarella might help. The pizza tasted fine, and my beer was good, but, as I've said already, it isn't what we expected based upon the image presented by the decor, menu, and prices. I think $10-12 would be fair for the pizza we got, and I'd happily pay that to have it again. Girasole Restaurant and Bar has a lot of potential, but seems as if it is suffering from a bit of an identity crisis. They have a very high end image and name, but don't live up to that image or name. If a pizzeria has "WOOD FIRED" in all caps, sans-serif printed across the side of the building, I expect a Neapolitan style pizza. If a restaurant has "bar" in the name, a gorgeous counter, and a selection house-made herb infused spirits, I think it's reasonable to expect to be able to order any standard drink. My suggestion to the owners is this: Pick what you want to be and do it consistently. We would have happily walked into a NY style pizza place tonight and had a $12 pizza and beer; instead we walked into a place that we thought (again, based on the name, image, and prices) would be higher end fully prepared to pay $17 for a pizza and $8-10 for a cocktail and left less than satisfied.

This used to be our go-to place as well. We want to support local but this place just can't find it's niche. We just spent more than $80 for a pizza dinner for 2 adults and kids because there is no longer kids' pizzas on the menu. I get that you want to cater to hipsters wanting to have a wood-fired experience but please take that Red Tricycle award sticker off your front door as you don't seem family friendly any longer.

I give them 4 stars for the upgrades on the appearance and bar. But for the food, please try to use fresh ingredients to make the pizza taste fresh - it was really dry. For good pizza, try signal. The pizza is definitely not as good as it was a few years ago. The pasta dishes look good, I suppose. Could probably do a better job at home. Great mimosas, pretzels, and salad is huge. Props to being the nicest, cleanest place to eat in St. Johns for a meal. But, they only have one server working at nights, which makes it slow. Service 3 stars - All the servers have been nice. Food 3 stars - you can get better food elsewhere.

A bit surprise to us and super pleasant. We were just looking for a place other than the Starbucks down the street to meet and again Yelp saved us by providing this recommendation. Great food and totally local. How cool is that! This place is very kid friendly and charming, Most importantly they know how to run a real wood fired oven. We stuck just with the happy hour 14 inch pizza and it was done really well. The crust was thin and had crunch. And while weve never found pizza that could equal a certain spot on the water ion the Amafi Coast, this one definitely brought back those memories, The happy hour by the way is a terrific deal and not to be missed. Very nice Italian red was a perfect complement to the quick snack, we will be back!

We stumbled upon this little gem while exploring the neighborhood and thought we would give it a try, and we are so glad we did!! We tried the Ample Pie and it was very fresh and tasty! I could actually see the chef making the pizza before she put it in the oven!! It tasted phenomenal and reminded me of the pizzas we make at home, but only better!! This little eatery is a good drive for us, but we will for sure be back as regulars!! I hope they add goat cheese to the menu soon because it is our favorite on hand crafted pizzas!!

I want to like this place! Casual, and laid back, nice place to get a beer, but maybe a bit too laid back. For the three times that my wife and I have been there for eat-in-dining, the young staff seems to be more interested in texting on their phone and joking amongst themselves than serving the customer. Does 'Close at 8pm Sunday" mean that if you walk in at 7:48 pm the business will turn you away? This is what happened to us, except we were calling to get a pizza for pick up. To my knowledge, it takes approximately 7-8 minutes to make a pizza and fire it in a commercial oven. They told us the kitchen was closed.??? Turning away business in the John? That is OK, we can take our money to some other local restaurant and give it to them.

We wanted a simple, lunch before heading down to Trek in the Park, so we thought we would try Girasole. It wasn't very busy (3 tables had people,) but all of the tables in the main dining area were dirty. We wanted to sit by the window, but the table had lettuce, sticky dressing, and tons of crumbs... so we opted for the table that just had crumbs and poppy seeds... and the server didn't offer to clean a table off for us... :/ After we sat down, it took about 5 mins to get a menu, and then another 10 mins for the server to come back and asked us what we wanted to drink. We (3 of us) just wanted water, and it took her about 7 mins to get them to us. Then she finally took our order. I ordered the pretzel w/dipping sauce and the compost soup (I asked for them together they did not come that way,) my sister got the Queen Margerhita, and her boyfriend got the BBQ chicken sandwich. The pretzel came out in about 10 mins, but then it took another 5 mins for them to get their food, and I still didn't have my soup. It would have asked, but she told me the soup would be out soon... After we had finished almost all of our food (my pretzel was long gone,) the soup finally came... not sure why it would take so long for a bowl of soup... I also had to ask for a refill on my water, and the server didn't get to it for about 5 mins... and when she did come back with the pitcher, she went to the one other table that still had people at it (who had no water to refill) to see how they were doing before coming back to refill our waters. We were all done, and she just walked by and grabbed our plates, didn't say anything just took them... After waiting another 5 mins I had to turn around, say "excuse me, can we get our check?" She was talking to another server behind the counter, and seemed miffed that she had to get our tab. We were ready to pay when she brought it over, card in hand... but she walked away, so we had to get her attention again... A nice quick lunch before Trek, turned into over an hour of waiting for kind of over priced, not great food. Now the food. Pretzel w/ added jalapeno sauce- the pretzel itself was alright, though I do not think it should have the cheese inside because it just makes the middle a little greasy, the sauce is awful. Its mealy, not spicy what-so-ever, and kind of watery. Also online the price is listed as $3.95 for the pretzel w/sauce, but its really $3 for the pretzel, and an extra $2 for the sauce... Compost Soup- tastes like minestrone with more celery. Not at all worth the $4.50 price, and it doesn't come with bread, like everything else on the menu. Queen Margerhita pizza- it was alright, but didn't live up to its name. There was fresh basil on top, which was nice, but the cheese didn't seem like a fresh motz, it seemed like grated. It was disappointing at best, and certainly not royal. The price on this is accurate online and in house. BBQ chicken sandwich- I didn't get to try the sandwich, but he enjoyed it. I did get to try a fry, and they were pretty good. Crispy, good flavor. But again, the price online is $9.95, but its really $10.95. This was my first time eating here after over 4 years living in St. John's. The food isn't bad, just over priced for what you get, but the cleanliness and service was so bad it is 100% why we wont be going back.

Summary sentence of this review "If you like overpriced, flavorless cardboard crust pizza that takes 3x as long to make then other pizza spots this is your place, but don't forget a coat you'll be freezing as you wait" As you pull up to this corner spot, the large windows, fireplace and rustic wood surroundings draw you in. It screams great date spot and as a result I chose to take my fiancé there for his birthday. Note: Bring a coat with you, we were freezing the entire time we were there. We arrived at 6:30 on a Tuesday night, a few booths were occupied with couples but it was clearly a slow night. We sat at the bar and were offered service with little wait. The draft beers were limited to roughly 5 and they didn't even have a hoppy PDX style IPA on the menu or a wheat beer of any sort, the drinks consisted of a range of unique and traditional cocktails using what looks like in-house liquor (no labels on the bottles) priced at $8-10. We skipped the drinks this time around. We started by ordering a small Caesar salad, the dressing made the salad. The dressing was more of a vinaigrette/mustard-esq caesar that'd I'd never tasted before. The salad portion was small for the $8 price tag, it didn't include any meat either. The only other option was to get a $19 large which still didn't include any meat and appeared to be far to much salad for one person, let alone two sharing it as an appetizer. I think the owners should reconsider there serving size and pricing strategy. About 45 minutes into the experience (20 minutes post salad) our small half Kailua, half godfather pizza arrived. Besides the meager portion size for $13, the first bite into the godfather slice was disappointing. The crust was dense and flavorless, I'm certain the pre-packaged pizza crust you buy at Freddies is better. The toppings on the Godfather were "ok", the toppings on the Kailua were pretty darn good but when your chewing on cardboard crust, still hungry after the crumbs are gone and the speediest part of the night was getting the check that left you feeling like you were robbed in public this isn't a place you want to return to. One star for great service.

This is as pleasant a place as I know of to spend an afternoon (especially a rainy afternoon) picking up a snack, perhaps having a beverage, and staying all nice and warm and cozy and perhaps reading a book. That's what I did last weekend and it was the highlight of the day. The decor is casual and rustic using lots of wood. There is a fireplace as well. There is live music on Friday and Saturday evenings, and I think this would be an ideal venue for such. I was greeted at the door by the very friendly manager, given my choice of booth, and given menu and ice water. I opted for some french fries and they were fried in garlic and rosemary and very tasty. The wood-fired pizzas on the menu looked terrific, so I'll save those for a time when I'm hungrier. This is yet another St. Johns gem. It's got great ambiance, great food, and great friendliness. Be sure to give it a try!

Good service, good music... But never had a calzone with no cheese and mostly air before... Felt ripped off but they make good pesto pasta and fries. Not sure if they forgot the cheese or what. At least we are buzzed now because we did not get enough food... ?

Okay, so I am still deciding whether I should give this restaurant a one star or nothing at all? I will give them one star. Hopefully they will get their act together! Where do I begin? Well, I have been living in St. John's for three years now. My first experience was delightful in 2011-12. They had a play area for children. It was very family oriented and welcomed those of us who were seeking a relaxing lunch or dinner without the hassle of your kid jumping all over the place. Apparently, that happened too much? Kids are really no longer welcomed as it once had and being a family in this place is not very comfortable. The upgrade is kind of ridiculous. I don't think their focus are in the right places. Doesn't feel like a pizza shack or a restaurant. It feels like they are still developing customer service with short staff. These people need help! They need constructive criticism before their business goes down in the gutter. I kind of feel for them in a way? So, the service is really poor here. There is practically no service. I have had bad experiences time after time. I should have left. I am beginning to think these people clearly care about their ambience more so than their service and menu. They still don't know how to manage a restaurant? It's appalling! After such bad reviews, you would think they would sit down as a team and let's say, talk about improvements? Their pasta options are only shell pasta and lasagna. The wait is forever for absolutely everything! That's including a friendly greeting, acknowledgement, water, drinks, and about a half an hour in the waiter just might stop by your table or booth after you have walked out of your seat tagging him or her down. It's terrible service. Unbelievably bad. I looked into their website. These people need help with their menu. They need a server training. They also need to organize a few things, like having copies prepared for the kid menu. They also need to teach their servers how to engage with public in a setting where you serve people. My experience was really bad. I am also going to write the owners and let them know they should update and pay someone to fix their website. They are currently using a blog site, and they don't have the menu for a category? Is this a restaurant or a complete joke? Get it together, you guys. This won't last too long. Prices are too high for this junk. Get it together.

***Pretzel Review Only*** Not the best pretzel porn, but I could not let this stop me from adding Girasole's wood-fired pretzel to the Throw Down. It's always a good day when you find a pretzel in a non-pretzel serving location. This time it was a pizzeria in St. Johns. These pretzels are clearly made by hand by people who make pizza on the reg - hence the hand-crafted unique shapes. They're boiled, salted and fired in the oven along with the wonderful pizzas Girasole pumps out. The pretzels come with a BOWL of warm white cheddar-jalapeno cheese dipping sauce, which is how dips should be served anyway. Just to give you a perspective, the bowl of cheese is the same size as the pretzel. This makes me happy considering the only other joint in town that does this is my favorite. Husband and friends Becky, Beau and myself enjoyed the first one so much we ordered a second. Girasole's rendition of the pretzel does not include lye or mustard - it's about soft, pillowy dough, a chewy crust, some salt and glorious tangy-creamy cheese sauce. And how can you say no to that?

  • Rachel R.

I'd give the service 4 stars because our server (a 30 something male) was super nice, attentive and quick, but the 2 star review is for the quality of the food. It's not very good. I hate to say it, but the pizza tastes like a jazzed up version of a frozen Totino's. It's bland, flat and overall not impressive. The small Caesar salad was good, in my opinion, but my guy wasn't a fan of the dressing, he didn't even finish his portion of his salad. We got a small pizza and small salad it was enough for the both of us considering we were going to the movies directly after where we knew we'd order some popcorn. The sizes of their meals are a bit bizarre though. Had we not been going to the movies, we wouldn't have been satisfied. Price increases dramatically from the small sizes to the larger sizes. We live in the neighborhood and we've always wondered why it seems so dead in there all the time, unfortunately, I think we figured out why. This place could be so cool! Change your menu (whole new pizza crush and sauce is needed), adjust your sizes and pricing and we'd totally come back. Would love to be able to support another local business.

Tried Girasole out with my boyfriend after passing it up for years and was pleasantly surprised. Our waiter was great, the food was awesome and the music they were playing was the best. The atmosphere is just nice, good for St. Johns. It's our new date night spot and the Godfather is our new favorite.

Boring. Bland pizza, expensive, inconsistent management, poor service. Seems like this place is ran by a hippy with a trust fund and good intentions, but is too lazy to do it right... It sucks because there will be good pizza in town and they will go under, like they should have a long time ago...

Great pizza, great beer, fun atmosphere. The live music was a blast! Pizza was overpriced, but overall a good experience. We did end up with a $90 bill for two pizzas, two pretzel appetizers, two lemonades, and six beers. WOW.

  • Martha C.

This place is overpriced. Since when did a pizza dinner for 2 adults = $50? This doesn't include so-so drinks. The salads are $7-$8 for a small and $18-$19 for a large. The salads are mediocre. I do like the pizzas but the large is more of a medium size. When I spend $23 (not including the tip) I expect it to be enough pizza for adults. The pizza is over salted and compost soup tastes like canned soup. I'm not sure why they are so slow to serve since they never seem to have customers. This area needs a good pizza place. Please shape up.

I don't even know where to start... The food was amazing! The service was top notch and the atmosphere was perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. I can't wait to eat here again! We sampled a little of everything, pretzel with cheese sauce, pasta and a pizza, delicious! I would be cheating everyone if I gave Girasole anything less than five stars! GO THERE! Support local business and wood fired everything!!!!

I really want to like Girasole. Wood fired deliciousness? I wish. Each time I've been to Girasole, I've been underwhelmed. Service, slow and inattentive. Slow to get food. The food itself, while edible, is not impressive. Especially given how expensive it is. If Girasole was not so expensive, I might consider eating here from time to time as I live in the neighborhood and enjoy eating in a nice, casual, family friendly environment. I'd prefer to save my money and my time and avoid Girasole. I could make a tastier pizza at home in less time than Girasole. And it wouldn't cost $15 for a tiny pizza.

This is quite possibly the best pizza in the galaxy, and it's run by some of the nicest people in Portland. If you're in the mood for incredible-tasting, perfectly-cooked, wood-fired pizza goodness, there's no better option in Portland. DON'T MISS the handcut rosemary french fries that're so fresh you'll freak out, or the stick-icky gooey madness of the fresh-fired-so-good-you-won't-share cinnamon rolls with ooey-gooey warm cream cheese to dip in. The simple but high-quality cocktails are the perfect complement... and if you're truly in need of a carb load, they'll totally honor your request to put the rosemary french fires underneath the cheese on your pizza.

I've been meaning to try this place since we moved to St. John's. We've ordered from both the other pizza places in the area and we're looking forward to a wood fired pie. Called in a large pizza and was told it would be a 30 minute wait. No problem. Went in and told them we were going to order drinks while we waited for our to-go order for Katherine. I think it took about 8 minutes for the guy to make our drinks, it was slow and we we're the only ones who we're waiting for cocktails. I wasn't in much of a hurry or otherwise I would have been annoyed with the slowness. The spot was super cute with a good atmosphere, although it was silent with no background music when we walked in which felt weird but shortly after the live music started which was good. After about 40 minutes my husband asked if our food was almost ready. The same guy, an obviously new server named Peter, said "oh did you have a to-go?" After some shuffling around they brought us a cooked to shit, orange looking cardboard ass pizza. I'm.. pissed.. So I tell them I can't pay for this. I'm pretty easy but this was really, REALLT terrible looking. Apparently the pizza had been waiting for an unknown amount of time and when they realized it was ours the tried to re-fire it. They agreed to comp our tab which I appreciate but after almost an hour we left without food. I have no idea how the pizza is, but the service was noooot good. I may try it again in hopes that it was an off day but my expectations are low.

BEST EVERYTHING EVER! I can't believe how good this place is. I'm glad I forget sometimes or I'd be there every day! Their pizza is so crispy fresh and hot out of their massive wood burning oven. I often drop by just to eat their rosemary French fries that are out of this world. They hand cut and fry them to order and throw in big sprigs of fresh herbs. For dessert you should never miss the opportunity to eat the wood-fired cinnamon rolls; I cry a little with joy every time I eat them. Vegan & gluten free friends don't shy away! They make a nice gluten free crust and offer Daiya cheese. The owner is the nicest guy EVER and is always willing to accommodate my quirky pizza requests. Did I mention they make their own herb infused simple syrups for drinks? AND on top of that, they only use top shelf liquor! They have my favorite Crater Lake vodka which is made locally and is an excellent liquor. They also have live music some nights which is such a blast! You'll see people dancing near the fire place and having a great time. I'd write more but I'm on my way to pick up a pizza now!

Just had my first pie at Girasole. Really good Ample Pie with gluten free crust. The server was very friendly. My wife and I don't live that close but we will definitely make it back at least once a month. Oh and really good wine list. Enjoyed their house red. Didn't get to try any of the house infused cocktails, but looked intriguing.

The food was okay, if not a bit overpriced for what you get ($9 for a bowl of mac and cheese). The service on 2/16 was horrible. Waited and waited to order - place moderately busy. I ordered a soft drink when we placed food order. It was not delivered. I politely requested drink again when food was delivered - never came. No one checked in with table to see if we needed anything. I had to go to the counter to pay -- again, our table was not monitored by the staff. The staff needs training or replacement. The food is not good enough to tolerate such poor service. If you have exhausted your other St. Johns options and want a change of pace, by all means check it out. Just expect slow and poor service. After writing this I wonder why I left any tip.

My boyfriend and I ordered the Mimi Pizza last night. We opted to wait for it and take it home because the restaurant was pretty loud from the shrieks of little kids. We sat down and enjoyed some water and nice conversation. The person who I assume the owner filled our water glasses a couple times and was very polite. This was surprising. There are alot of places in St. Johns that have really bad customer service so this was a refreshing experience. When we got our Pizza home we ate it. It was topped with Bacon, Bleu Cheese and Carmelized onions. It was pretty small for being large but it was delicious and worth the $18.00 we paid for it. We'll be back again.

I really, really, wanted to like the food. We live in the neighborhood and want all restaurants to do well and provide tasty food but the pizza crust and Cesar dressing at Girasole were such a disappointment. If you prefer to have your Cesar dressing taste lemony then this is the place. If you prefer an anchovy, garlic blend this won't be a good fit for you. The pizza crust was tasteless and Margherita pizza was bland. And the size of the pour for the price of a glass of wine was crazy. Small and too expensive. Basically, our choices did not trigger our taste buds and to couple that with the high prices made for a disappointing dining experience.

This is a sweet spot in St Johns. They make everything from scratch, from the salad dressings to the pizza dough and put lots of love into it all. All the food is not only done well, but has interesting takes on it. The rosemary garlic fries are simply amazing. (Why didn't I think of that a long time ago?) I also loved their "compost" soup which I hear is made with love from one of the owner's gardens. The salads are HUGE! So make sure and order the small if you just want a "normal" salad size. In fact, the portion sizes here are all generous. (Burp) One of the highlights of this small sweet spot is their amazing wood fired pizza oven. I mean it is really "wood fired". No other heat source. It is shaped like an oval oven of yore and has a small fire built in the back of it. They not only do wonderful pizzas there but their cheesy pretzels look delicious! Didn't have one, as I'm gluten free but I wish I could! Speaking of gluten free, they have a tasty gluten free pizza crust too. They won my heart and stomach! I'll be back, they've been fairly warned.....

Food is great but I showed up tonight at 8:10 - their hours say they are open until 9. Doors locked, closed sign up - 2 employees inside. Looked up, looked back down and kept doing what they were doing. Guess I'll go somewhere else for pizza.

By far some of the best gluten-free pizza in town. They have some pretty stellar topping combinations and lots of options for make-your-own. Also, excellent vegan pizza. Beer and wine selection is just so-so, but the staff is super friendly. Great place for kids and hanging out on a weekend to manga and play games over a pint and a few slices with friends.

I will not patronize this restaurant after they confronted me (during the annual St. John's Parade) because my one year old was crying outside. I was sitting along the curb with my children when my son began to cry. One employee was given permission by the manager (or owner, I'm not sure what her job title was) to come OUTSIDE and tell me to leave the vicinity as they "were running a business" and my child was "disrupting the other customers" who were INSIDE the building. The staff was very disrespectful toward my children and me. They didn't offer any assistance or help in anyway; only attacks and criticism of my parenting skills. I am angered and terribly saddened by the extreme lack of empathy a room full of female employees showed by sending the one male employee outside to harass and criticize a mother of three young children on the sidewalk during a busy NOISY parade. There is a "kid area" in the restaurant with books and trains, but their ACTIONS show the truth about how they feel about children and parents. (Before this incident occurred, I ate here twice. The pizza was mediocre. Service was slow even with only a few patrons.)

Did not eat here, but spent 4 hours with lots of teenage girls screaming.......the delightful owners - who I had the privilege to meet and talk to - hosted an event for a famed U Tuber..... They were gracious, kind, informative. They provided free nachos and pretzels, all delicious . Plus, free alcoholic beverages to those parents ,such as myself, who were dragged kicking and screaming to the event . They would not accept payment or even tips ..... This is a one of a kind cafe.I recommend going out of your way to enjoy this wonderful place.

Great experience. Pizza was very good and always fun to watch the fresh dough being tossed. Place was busy and service was timely. The Spanish coffee was excellent!

I loved the pizza and sangria. The fries are addictive. However the pizza was pretty spicy. It caught me by suprise. Owner is acceptant to feedback and I really enjoyed the food otherwise.

I liked the size of the pizza since it was just my husband and I having lunch. It gave us a chance to try an appetizer and get a pizza and still walk away full!

Sadly, we were disappointed with this place. It took over 45 minutes to get our 3 small pizzas. The waitress tried to move us to the other side where there were a multitude of loud children. Plus, she brought us our drinks & never returned. We had to go ask to get refills & where our food was. The pizza was okay, but there are better options in St. Johns.

The best pizza in the St Johns area. We've only ordered for take-out, but we have been satisfied. There is a good selection of toppings and pretty good crust. We love wood fired pizza (my husband is from CT and we've been spoiled with New Haven pizza). It's nice to find a decent wood fired pie in the neighborhood. The Ample Pie is tasty! So far my only complaint is that the pizza seems a little on the high side as far as prices. I look forward trying a few more menu items.

The Aussie and I called Girasole Pizza and ordered a large pepperoni pizza to go, eager and excited to try a new, locally-owned pizza place in our neck of the woods. After parting with $16 ($15 for the grub, $1 extra for to-go orders...not sure why, as I always need to-go boxes when I eat in anyhow, but I digress) we got home to open the small, light-weight box to find a disappointingly puny pizza. Definitely not worth $16, especially for just one topping. The crust was VERY thin. Not crispy, but very close to it. Also, there was very little melty, savory cheese. Lastly, the tomato sauce was overly tangy...not the balance of sweet and salty I expect in a decent red sauce. After quickly polishing off most of the pizza, Aussie asked me "what can we make now for dinner?" I sincerely wanted to fall head over heels with this place's pizza, but it just didn't hit the spot.

Looking at other reviews and pictures, I suspect either they've changed their cooking process recently or just had a lazy night because our pizza was stale, soggy and chewy. The waitress confirmed that they "parbake" the crust, which explains the twice-cooked, underwhelming taste. I would have been impressed if someone presented it to me as frozen bake-at-home pie. But i hear "wood-fired" and I'm expecting a crisp bubbly crust and fresh toppings. She said they prebake because "it takes too long" to cook it fresh, which is pretty bizarre given that you can find a pizza made from fresh dough at dozens of other places in town. She did discount our meal, and the place is kid friendly. I don't live in St Johns so I'm not likely to return, but if I did I would request fresh dough before giving their pizza another try.

I went to Girasole Pizza for the first time yesterday and my wife and i were very impressed with the menu and the service. We tried some of the appetizers which were very good. We will certainly be going back.

Great wood-fired pizza with a variety of toppings. Sometimes a bit of a wait, but really yummy. I love that they only have local beer on tap. Girasole caters to families with young kids (toys and a play area available). They also have a pretty decent music selection playing in the background.

Serendipity - we needed a place to take ourselves and our two year old for dinner, and everything worked. He enjoyed the small play area (though I was a bit nervous about its placement next to the fireplace, which had an uneven edge on the floor), the fun tables and the small pizza we ordered him. Solid menu, and the staff was extremely nice. They only have one highchair at the moment, but I can't imagine they won't buy more soon - families with kids were their sole clientele when we were there, and the place packed up quickly at dinner. They appear to have worked out the heat and smoke issues that the previous reviewer mentioned (at least the night we were there, 1/22/2011).

I love wood-fired pizza, which is perhaps why I was so disappointed in the food here. The crust is like cardboard. My friends and I agreed that it seemed like frozen pizza. We experienced very friendly service, but unfortunately I can't recommend this place.

I went here for Sunday brunch with my friend and was excited to see this pizza place had a special menu for the early morning! The waiter and greeter were really nice and let us sit anywhere in the spacious restaurant full of natural light and interesting artwork. I really enjoyed the painted tables that were converted doors. We enjoyed a 'hangover' pizza that was accompanied with a shot of franks hot sauce, and some french toast skewers - they were also very receptive of the comments I had to improve their food, and they even asked for my opinion! I haven't gone back in about 2 months, but from the looks of recent reviews they are improving and I think their great attitude will serve them well! I look forward to seeing the positive changes when I return. And writing an update. I gave this place a three because I wasn't super impressed with the food, but it was good. I think they could have improved their presentation and quality of some ingredients. Also, I had wonderful company which made me enjoy the experience more.

I was so thrilled when this place opened, but I didn't go inside until a few weeks ago. Dinner was fabulous, service was amazing, great for a neighborhood pizza place. I agree with another reviewer, the pour on the wine was small, but that can easily be fixed, right?

I'm not the pickiest person I know, especially when it comes to pizza. But when I hear that there is wood-fire cooked pizza, I get a little excited, and I was looking forward to giving them a try. I will say the ambiance is fun, and the service was good. The menu has a variety of tasty-sounding pizzas on it, and I was pleased to see personal sized lunch pizzas, if a bit more spendy than I would have hoped. I am especially fond of BBQ Chicken pizza, so that's what I ordered. The pizza was perfectly fine, and I liked the size, but it was nothing to get excited about. The crust was ok, the toppings were ok, but I expected a bit more than that. The icing on the cake of my lunch time visit, though, that definitely puts the visit down to two stars, was the very disappointing brownie. A Ghiradelli chocolate brownie with caramel sauce sounds like a dream come true to a chocolate lover like myself. I went to pay the check, and there they were, beckoning to me. I decided to get one to go, and was decidedly shocked when they told me my total bill - the brownie was $4.00!! A little higher than I expected, but I thought maybe it will be worth it. It wasn't. I haven't had a brownie that dry in years... no fudgy goodness. Not even very chocolately. I paid $4 for a likeness of a brownie, and it made me very sad. Now, it could be that they were having an off day, brownie-wise. I may try them again someday, and if things are better I will gladly amend my rating. But, for now, this was definitely a 2 star visit. *sigh*

Went here for the first time a while back when we were in St. Johns. They have a really good selection of wood fired pizza. Probably not my favorite pizza in PDX but very very good pizza. Also they have local beers, when I say local I mean local in the neighborhood of St. Johns. They carry Occidental and Captured by porches beers. Very cool place i'll be back for sure.

THANK GOODNESS. We haven't had good pizza on the peninsula as long as I can remember. Well, let's not do disservice to our awesome pizza food cart, which is great (but not a restaurant.) Anyhow. It's just nice to have a new place open up that isn't a coffee shop. We're covered on that front, thanks. Girasole is really GREAT. High quality ingredients. Nice work on the sauce and the crust, a rare feat for some reason. Their salad dressings are perfection-- both the Caesar and the Blue. Haven't tried the soup- but it looked pretty basic to me. Service is fine, though they have been incredibly overstaffed both times I was there-- that will probably calm down as they get into the swing of things. They really need to move the tables around and add a bit more seating. I understand what they were trying to do-- but a couple more tables are needed. There is a corner with toys for the kiddos, which I see bothers some people-- but I couldn't have cared less. What they do need to work on is that wine list- TERRIBLE, terrible, terrible options.

First time here and it was definitely a miss (with the exception of the staff). The servers were friendly and on point. The pizza was very weak. We tried two and both suffered from lack of flavor and I thought it was over priced.

For people who are raving about how good this place is they either are friends of the place or have a bland sense of taste. The food was terrible for starters. It took a long time to wait for 2 sandwiches that had no flavor: none. Red peppers on everything doesn't equal flavor. The pasta salad was horrible, I have had better pasta salad by pouring Italian dressing over pasta. There was no interaction with any wait staff. It sounded as if the workers in the back were having fun but that energy did not transfer into the food. From the outside of the restaurant things look decent but be warned...very warned... You can score a better sandwich and pasta salad from the deli at Safeway or Fred Myers...I'm not sure about the pizza at this place and I definitely will not be going back to find out.

Hangover Pizza was an excellent way to start the day - it makes the night before more worthwhile! Our Lattes were perfect and my partner really enjoyed his frittata. Staff is very friendly; when we asked about one of the rules of the UNO game on the table she offered to hunt the box down! My only complaint is he silly piece of string tied around the napkin/silverware. I almost shredded my napkin while removing the string. Totally unnecessary, difficult and a waste. We will definitely return.

We went here on Sunday morning with a friend for breakfast. We hadn't intended to go, but James John Cafe was too busy, the line for Johns Street was insane and Patty's Home Plate...well, you could stay home and do better. So, there...a beacon in the morning...Girasole. We had some friends that didn't give it great reviews when they first opened, so I didn't set the bar very high! Sarah, our server was FABU! So friendly when I told here we were Girasole 'virgins'! She explained everything and was very patient, despite the fact we were preoccupied with our college age 'adopted daughter' having a melt down from 'tanking' the GRE! The coffee was amazingly good! French press to boot! We ordered the Hangover Pizza, the cinnamon rolls and the french toast skewers. We were NOT disappointed. The pizza was delish! Eggs, bacon and blue cheese on my breaky pizza!?! Sign a brotha up! The cinnamon rolls, which I would rarely gravitate to were ordered by my partner...and I'm glad he did! They were SO good! It finally made me forget about the dreadful smell of 'Cinnabon' at the mall! You gotta try Girasole's cinnamon rolls! The French Toast skewers were fine. Nothing to write home about, but they were good, nonetheless. I would have been pissed if that's all I had ordered. Let's put it that way. I'm always excited to see people open new fun places in our neighborhood. I'm glad I gave Girasole a try. YOU SHOULD TOO! Now, quit reading this and go stuff your face!!!

The pizza options in St. Johns are terrible. Its either take and bake nastiness or pricey organic artisan. Rather than consuming a years worth of sodium, my mother and I opted to take home a Girasole pie. I don't remember the name of the pizza we ordered, but it had fresh basil, mozzarella, and chicken sausage. We ordered the large for take out, but waited in the restaurant while it baked. The service was super friendly and the staff was playing some great 90's tunes. We waited about 15 minutes for our pie and it smelled terrific (even through the box!) My mom peeked inside the box when we settled into my Jeep, and she gasped at the size of this supposed "large" pizza. It looked like a medium! Her disappointment was short lived because once she took a couple bites, she realized that Girasole definitely abides by a "quality over quantity" way of cooking. She proudly served the pizza to my dad and he loved it, but he was left hungry for more. The slices are thin and so as the crust. DELICIOUS, but thin. Overall, I was disappointed because my mom ended up spending almost $20 for a medium pizza disguised as a large pizza. She won't be back and I wont either.

Dinner here is good, not excellent, but good. If I were only rating this place for dinner, I would give it 4 stars. However, today I went for the first time for breakfast and it was awful, so I have to do only 3 stars (but probably closer to 2.5). So, therefore, I'm going to give a review on both breakfast & dinner... For breakfast, the food was bland, they had limited options and the service was terrible. There were 5 people working and only 3 customers and it was some of the worst service I've had in a long time. Their french press was broken, so no drip coffee or regular coffee available, although they do have an espresso machine if you want to fork out the cash. Personally, I love refillable coffee when out to brunch, but that isn't an option here. On the plus side, if you do decide to go for breakfast (not sure why you would when there are MUCH better places to go in St Johns for brunch), I have never seen them busy in the mornings, so you are certain to get a table. For dinner, we've been here probably 10 times, so it's obviously good enough to come back. The novelty of wood fired pizza is cool and they do have good topping choices. Service is always lacking, but I do like that there is a great kids play area and it's very kid friendly, so that's a big selling point for us. They do have good salads and I know they are updating their menu with sandwiches as well. They have painted tables and ample street parking. All in all, it's decent for dinner.

The wood fired pizza was pretty good. We had a pepperoni and chicken sausage pizza, and the wood fired taste made it extra good. We also had cups of the potato leek soup. It was decent, but could have more flavor. Needs more cream perhaps. After many restaurants in this location, I hope that this one makes it.

This place was really great! The flat bread in particular, and the Caesar salad (assuming of course that you like garlic). Portion sizes are large and the service is quick and very friendly. If you have little kids -- or even if you don't, this is the place to sit back, enjoy a local brew or glass of wine, and eat well.

They've cruised past their 1 year anniversary. Like Freddie Prinze Sr. said, "Lookin' goooood!" An excellent proof that it truly is all good in the hood.... I might be way off here, but the decor in this place to me screams "Nouveau California Hippie transplant." Fortunately, it's not an off-key scream, and in an affected but endearing faux Italian accent. Butterflies festoon the walls, as do sunflowers (Girasole in Italian in fact is their word for "sun flower".. or literally, "as the sun turns".... the staff there said I was one of the few that correctly guessed the meaning of their name, but heck, they hand it to you on a silver platter, w/all the decorative Sunflowers everywhere in the building and on the menus). Each table for customers is uniquely styled/patterned.... one near the door had a mr lizard theme, several others I saw had what sort of looked like a game board of "Candyland" or somesuch.... maybe they keep dice and game-pieces behind the counter? The inset fireplace is a very nice touch, as is the foosball table right next to it. "Sounds Interesting. But what about you food," you might be wondering? On the whole, I liked more things than I didn't, and the prices were pretty darn reasonable. Their Caeser salad is smallish, but with exceedingly crisp Romaine, and fresh cheese sprinkles and Artisan-style croutons. Their Composte Soup was exactly like Progresso's version, so many ingredients jam packed in there, yet all you can do is marvel at how bland it is. Fortunally, every table comes equipped w/the glorious Srirachi hot sauce. Their Pizza is a mixed bag. I've now tried both their Margherita and their pepperoni, both of which I was quite pleased came with supremely thin crust. The Pepperoni I liked, it had two types of cheese, and a generous sub-layer of meat. The Margherita... not so much. Other than sauce and cheese, the only topping looked like chopped scallions. Can you still consider it a Margharita w/scallions, instead of bay leaves? I love me some scallions, don't misunderstand, just trying to suss through this mini-mystery... Another example of my being continously pre-occupied with questions of highly dubious merit.... so much for intellectual curiosity! The only other menu item I've yet tried is their lasagna, which I found on point. I liked that it was served in a small bread pan....help to contain any potential mess, which is tougher to avoid when it's slopped on a flat plate...Finally, they feature Occidental brewing on tap, which gets HUGE points with me, any time. Occidental is my favorite new Portland based brewery, easily. If you have the chance, at least try their dopple bock! The service so far has always been excellent @ Girasole... as it should have been as it's been quite slow when I've been there. But Lord knows I've had far less attentive service at places that were completely non-compis-mentis, and I'll bet I'm not the only one to routinely experience this in town... Girasole, a belated, "Welcome to the neighborhood." Ciao, and Grazie!

I LOVE this place! There isn't a drop of high fructose corn syrup in it. That means that they do not serve pepsi or coke products and they do not own a deep frier. This may bother some but I think it is refreshing:) they do have natural bottled sodas and there are new ones to try all the time. I like the cucumber soda. They make home made stone fired pizza, sandwiches, pastas, soups, and salads. I think they are a fairly new business. Every time I go back there is something new! I even saw that they added a steak to there menu which makes it my next date night hopefully.

I have been here 3 or 4 times now. The first two times I went with my friend and we both brought our kids. It was nice for us to know that the place is kid friendly and we can kind of relax a bit because it is casual. The food is pretty good. I have had three or four different pizzas and they have all been good (although some kind of greasy). The artichoke dip was good, the hummus was okay. I look forward to going for breakfast sometime. We wished they had fountain soda too. My husband drank water because they didn't. The service was pretty slow tonight it seemed. I think they may have been a bit understaffed. When we got there there was only one other family in the place and it still took probably 25 minutes to get our food. I make a lot of homemade pizza at home and I can knock them out pretty fast on my pizza stone so I am not sure what the hold up was. I hope this place sticks around though! I think the prices are reasonable, the decor is nice, and the food tastes good!

They have gluten-free pizza! And, it's good! I had their BBQ chicken pizza (homemade GF BBQ sauce, very good), and my husband had a regular pizza with peperoni and sausage. We both really enjoyed our dinner, and my husband enjoyed a homemade cookie/ice cream sandwich. Great prices, especially with the all-day happy hour prices (which include GF pizzas). We also liked that our beer and wine were served in little mason jars! We had great service and we will absolutely be back.

I've been here about four or five times and have never had a bad experience. I agree it does appear to be a little expensive, however, I think it's worth it. The salads are delicious, the root soup is wonderful as well as the BBQ Chicken & Thai Pizzas. The staff is friendly and the beer is good! Support your local businesses and give this place a try!!!

I had the Margherita. The crust was good. The sauce was weird, kinda spicy and pasty. The cheese really had no flavor. I didn't have any problems with service. I got my drink and salad pretty much right away and my pizza within 20 minutes.

I went in on a Saturday night around 8PM to order some take out. After reading the reviews for this place I was worried. I am glad that I have a mind of my own. The service was prompt and the prices are great. I got a sandwich with a side pasta salad, large pizza, , a side of pesto and a drink for $24.50. I was given my food within 15 minutes and on my way home. Loved the grilled sandwich and pasta salad the pesto that I asked for on the side for the sandwich was great!. Liked the pizza a lot but thought that the peanut sauce on the Thai pizza could have been a little spicier for my taste. I will be trying some of their other options in the future.

I really like their pizza . The decor could be better inside and the service a bit more personable and faster. Besides that they seem to really care about their customers and the pizza is my favorite.

  • Willard J.

The location is nice and the inside is clean and has a solid vibe. They have a nice selection of beers on tap and a full bar. A few issues we had. 1. Taps were blown on two of the beers we wanted. 2. They didn't have some items on the menu. 3. The menu is a little small and somewhat pricey for a 14" pizza. 4. The service was on the slow side and the place was pretty empty. Some good things: 1. The pizza was good. I wouldn't write home about it, but it was good. 2. The waitress was very nice and apologetic that a pretzel we ordered was cold. 3. The salads were great (see photos.) Overall, it's just another pizza joint. I think if I make it back in here it will be for a salad.

  • Ivan J.

The place looks good, the menu has only three apetizers, three salads and plenty pizzas. Went there w my wife to have a cool night out. There was a band playing inside, but to our surprise we couldnt talk for the whole dinner bc the band was so loud. Food wise, the pizza was very whatevers, not tasty, and i even assumed the dough wasnt fresh. We got a very small salad for $7.50 w greens and a few sliced almonds. I repeat, $7.50 for a small salad. Good thing thou, free coke refill. Somebody call Marcus Lemonis from the porfit to save this place. Cool service at least!

Im sorry because you seem nice enough, but the food at this place is just not good. Ive been there 3 times now and I wont be back, it's been a disappointment every time. I really think you need to get like Gordon Ramsay in there or something and have him refresh your menu. The pasta section? Like come on you guys. So weak. Also, for boasting to be a pizza joint you need to learn how to make pizza dough. So nasty. And SUPER overpriced too. St. Johns is so small whyyyy must we waste dope restaurant real estate on this place?

Great beer and decent pizzas (they're rather small in size for the price, though tasty). Lots of high chairs, booster seats, kids menu items, and a cozy play area. Service was perfect and the place wasnt crowded on a weekday night. These guys are making a genuine effort in a tough market, and we truly enjoyed our visit to their establishment.

this place has great sandwiches and pizzas. the taste is great and prices are fair. try the arugula sandwich. the big problem is that they don't have soda

    (4)
  • Nick W.

I give the pizza 4 stars. It's quite good. I like how they drop blobs of cheese on it instead of coating it with shredded cheese like most places. The flatbread was okay, the hummus so-so. (kind of watery?) I really wish they had a better drink selection. I understand they want to sell local products and avoid high fructose corn syrup -- and I support this, in theory -- but a 12oz bottle of soda shouldn't cost two dollars! I just end up drinking water. If I could get a soda for $1.50 with some ice, I'd be happy. With some of the kinks ironed out, this could be an awesome place. As of now, it's pretty good, but with some quirks.

  • Cinnamongirl 6.

I love the compost soup. I will admit that I haven't tried the pizza which always looks amazing. I've only had a sandwich. The atmosphere is family and kid friendly. I love the mason's jars for drinks. The price are very fair. The one complaint I have is that once we have our food, that's it. We have been there three times and each time we don't get asked about refills or if we need anything else. I don't like to be fussed over, but I also don't want to have to get up and ask for more tea when my empty jar is sitting on the edge of the table. So, that being said, we will definitely go back. Gotta try the pizza!

I don't eat in many restaurants since discovering my gluten intolerance, so finding a gluten free pizza place is a definate plus. We stopped in for a hot beverage on a cold day, and shared the compost soup, blue cheese/ spinach pizza, also an eggnog latte . What a great afternoon in St.Johns!!!
