The Carnitas Yucatecas tacos as well as the Cochinita tacos are out of this world, and for the price, are huge. They are so good, in the 20 or more times I've been there, I have not ventured to order anything else (someday I will). The staff are very friendly and the place is comfortable and clean. They also have big screens on which they show the World Cup matches. Another word about their tacos: having lived in central Mexico for a couple years and more, and having traveled there extensively, I have to say that Yucatan is not a place I have visited so these tacos are unique in style, but EVERY BIT AS SAVORY as the delicious ones in Jalisco and Michoacan.

this place is so friggin good. some of the best best mexican food i've had in portland, and for the price, omg, its amazing. the sauces are rad, the presentation is beautiful, and i love the flavor combinations. simple and delicious. its in a super random location, but that adds to the charm. will be going back for sure!

I discovered this place last week and I just had to write. I've been to Mexico 7 times but NEVER had food like this. It is so different I hardly know what to say about it. It's like food from another world ( hey, sorry, I love Mexican beach towns and haven't been elsewhere ). Relleno Negro with BLACK sauce made from Burnt Chilies ? I can't say that I loved it, but I must say I was very impressed by it, and I could see people loving it, it just seemed real primitive to me. I was also very impressed by the pork they make that we were told was made by cooking ALL the parts of the pig for 8 hours. Seek this place out, go there, try it. This guy is doing something no one else in Portland is doing. Oh, and he also realizes the name is weird, and he said he plans to change it. To me it's just endearingly naive.

Marvelous, unusual food. Great prices. Great service. Friendly owners. Downhome atmosphere with a bar and a pool table in the connected space next door! This review is actually for Comida Tipica Yucateca, the Yucatecan restaurant that shares a building with the bar Angel Food & Fun. The restaurant is on the left. You may bring food into the bar, no problem! The husband and wife who run the place are smiling, friendly, excellent cooks and so proud of their cuisine. Try the unusual meats (poc chuc or chim or cochinita pibil) or the more common ones, try any taco on the fat housemade tortillas, try the soups, slather the orange habanero sauce on everything, get the soupy black beans on the side. Really you can't go wrong, just go! And enjoy.

Angel Food and Fun...??? WTF? Thanks to my buddy Jim's keen eye--he'd seen this place a few weeks before our visit--we resolved to track down this new cafe or restaurant, or grocery or whatever, which touted Yucatecan food in its window signage. Though we'd already had lunch at Taqueria La Estacion a few blocks away, we explored a bit, found it and decided to give it a shot. Damn, I'm glad we did.... First, yeah, the name sucks...we'll assume the owner's name is Angel (Ahn-hell, NOT Ayn-jell, please...) and he wants to put his name on his place that serves food; the fun is in the pool hall in the adjacent room...there's always fun with pool and beer, right? Now, back to the food part: Indeed, the Yucatecan kitchen is the focus of Angel's menu which features many of the region's standards like panuchos, salbutes, puchero, relleno blanco and relleno negro, frijol con puerco, cochinita, poc chuc, chocolomo, and a few others. First visit we tried the panuchos with cochinita, a tamal, and split a bowl of relleno negro. The panuchos were ok, but not quite as explosively flavorful as those at La Estacion down the street. Still tasty, but not quite at the same level. The tamal, wrapped in a banana leaf, filled with chicken, and topped with the distinctive salsa de chiltomate (cooked tomato, onion and habanero)...it was a moist, decent tamal, well worth the buck fifty or so price tag. Now, the winner was the relleno negro which is a sort of stew with shredded turkey and a ground pork stuffing swimming in a very slightly viscous broth flavored with barely burnt chiles, and an assortment of spices--sometimes it features a hard boiled egg as well, but not in this version. This is not a neon-flavored dish, but rather, very subtly seasoned, but highly enjoyable nonetheless. Chances are you've never had this dish unless you've been to the Yucatan, and I highly recommend getting to Angel Food to check it out. (I'm going to avoid saying that a trip to Angel's is like a trip to heaven, so don't worry about that obvious cliche winging into this writeup.) A portion is $9.99, but they will happily divide into two bowls, each large enough for a single serving. It is friggin' great, so try it. The people here are incredibly friendly and will walk you through the menu, explaining each item fully. I've had some nice conversations with them and they are very proud of their region and seem to be willing to risk offering such an unfamiliar menu to Portland...that said, they also include burritos and quesadillas to placate those who can't seem to understand that Mexican food goes beyond those dishes....oh well, they have to serve the market I suppose... Subsequent visits have included forays into other items: poc chuc is a great dish of grilled pork strips served with cabbage, pickled onions, avocado slices, an interesting thin hot sauce and a slurry of black beans (frijoles colados) on the side. Yummy. The polcan is a tortilla split open and stuffed with a paste of roasted pumpkin seeds and boiled white beans, topped with pickled onions and hot sauce...unusual, hard to find and delicious. One of the owners (or employees) is from San Luis Potosi in central Mexico and she has included a dish from her region on the menu, enchiladas potosinas...not the kind of enchilada you'd expect, but more like a flavorful tostada, topped with potatoes, salsa, mexican cheese and so on...nice, but not as good as those I've had in San Luis... another bowl of relleno negro was as enjoyable as the first...damn, I need a fix of that at least once a month or more...it's just that good. The owner has promised to add one of my favorite mayan dishes, papadzules which are tortillas wrapped around a boiled egg filling and doused in a fantastic green pumpkinseed (pepita) sauce, and finished with more of that chiltomate semi-hot salsa. It's not there yet, but the menu is still evolving, they've only been open about 6 weeks or so...and I'm still poking them about it, so hopefully the papadzul will show up soon. Folks, this is a place that deserves supporting...they are taking a chance in offering unusual menu items, some of which shine, others which come close, others are just average...but the overall experience is great and their menu is well-worth exploring. Maybe the fun is, in fact, in the food???

No beans. Nothing I wanted they could make. Told me to order a plate and even then they said they couldn't make it because they were out. Maybe the food is so good they ran out? I will never know.

Tried this place based in all the Yelp reviews. There was a steady stream of people when I was there waiting for a to go order for my group. For me it was just average. I eat a lot of Mexican food and I am forever looking for a great burrito. This was not it. Bland ingredients, unmelted cheese, too many onions, too much lettuce and not enough other stuff. Comes with black beans and guacamole but not much. I know a burrito may seem too basic. But it's a great indicator of how good other stuff on the menu can be. If I want "better" Mexican, Autentica is my new favorite. But for a quick lunch burrito I am still on the hunt.

  • Tori M.

Ohhh, the burritos here! Easily my most favorite in town. And they're a steal at only 6 bucks per right now. Everything else is pretty good too, but the burritos and house made sauces have a very special place in my heart.

  • Nathan S.

The service is good, but slow. They take their time with the preparation of the food and it is worth the wait! Not a place to go for a lunch on the run, but a spot to sit and talk while you wait. CASH ONLY! Everything is quite authentic and flavorful, and I highly recommend it!

  • Frank B.

Nice to see my gente keeping it real in Portland. Cheap, good, eats at this spot. Never heard of Panuchos and in my mind thought it was more like sopes or a tostada as my friend attempted to describe it to me. Turns out its kinda a bit of both. Chewy, corn tortillas stuffed with beans and topped with pickled veggies. When I saw the place specialized in the Yucatan region I understood why you don't see these items elsewhere in mainstream Mexican restaurants. The rice is very flavorful however the beans are soupy and black and taste a but oily otherwise the food is excellent! *CASH ONLY

  • Scott L.

I've been here twice now and the Panuchos are one of the best Mexican dishes I've had in Portland. It's like a taco on steroids. I got the carnitas and the pollo the last time I went and put a little hot sauce in them . The food is so cheap too, this is the spot for sure.

I was told of this gem by a coworker from California. She told me this was a very authentic Mexican food restaurant. Always being up for something new and ethnic I gave it a try...twice so far. Drive up to this place and immediately noticed that this is not fancy. Restaurant is simple and clean. All orders are taken at the counter and they accept cash only. There is a sign on the wall stating that all food is made fresh to order so...be patient. It's worth it. First time I went alone and ordered an Asada Burrito which was delivered with two squeeze bottles of hot sauce - a green jalapeño and yellow habanero. The habanero salsa made this burrito awesome! Second time I went with a group and asked the man at the register what he would order. I ordered 3 Panuchos and 2 Empanadas. This was outstanding! I found that the jalapeño salsa went well with the Panuchos. There is a video poker, pool hall next door (the "Fun") that had a lot of interesting people in it. Good people watching and great food! I look forward to the next adventure to Angel Food and Fun.

I had never had panuchos until I came here. WOW! Really amazing dish that is a corn tortilla baked with beans inside. It is topped with pickled veggies, avocado, and the meat of your choice. Don't miss out on the sauces available on the tables. The green one is great. The red one is ok if you can take high heat. A little pricey but well worth it. Nice atmosphere.

  • Kevan I.

Sign says have patience but that is an understatement. I waited an hour tonight for three panuchos and walked out hungry. Food looked and smelled great. Pretty clean and nice staff. Cannot comment on food and will not return. I do not find that unreasonable considering my simple order and the extra long wait. Best of luck.

I have been here three times now and I cannot quit the steak burrito. Consistently outstanding! I am Jones'n to try everything they have on offer but cannot escape the perfection of flavor, texture and ingredients in this sisterhood of burrito harmony. To my shagrin, Portland does not enjoy a wide array of really, really tasty burritos. Angel brings a burrito that's come to dance! And, DO NOT miss their verde salsa - good Lord!

  • Bree C.

There is a soft spot in my heart for this place, as while waiting for my lunch I won $200 on video poker. The empanada was only $2 and quite delicious. The tamales were wrapped in banana leaf, which I haven't seen before and it gave it a different, but good flavor. Their sauces are good, and I found the tamale better the next day. The service was very good, as I ended up so excited about my winnings that I ate my to-go order there.

I had never been inside a restaurant that specializes in food from the Yucatan. Oh, have I ever missed out. The Cully neighborhood is one of the poorest areas of Portland, located south of the airport. It's far away geographically and mentally from the Pearl, but the aptly named Angel Food & Fun could prepare delicious food anywhere in town. Owner Manuel Lopez grew up in the Yucatan and intimately knows the cuisine. He is a former sous chef at the renowned Bluehour. I ordered a chicken panucho, a crispy tortilla topped with shredded chicken, an outer ring of refried black beans, chopped cabbage, pickled red onion and jalapeno and a slice of avocado. Served with jalapeno and habanero sauces. It was quite tasty. For the main course, I had cochinita pibil, a slow-cooked pork stew. The meat is marinated with bitter orange juice, achiote paste and then roasted while wrapped with a banana leaf. The pork was flavorful and tender, with a delicious broth. It was topped with cabbage and pickled red onion and served with tortillas. Corn tortillas. This is not American Mexican cooking, or even real Mexican cooking. The Yucatan has its own rich food legacy. I look forward to coming back and tasting some of their other offerings.

Whoa! This place is the shit! A friend from the restaurant I cook at recommended this place and boy was he right. I ordered the steak quesadilla, a salbute with chicken and two tacos. That with an autentico squirt soda came out to $12. Everything was super tasty and prepared with love. Especially liked the pickled onions in my tacos and the fact that they take a second to season the avocado wedge that came with my salbute. That shows poise & style. Steak quesadilla was filling and had an awesome mozzarella cheesiness to it that rivals most pizzas. Will definitely be back. The only complaint I have is that they are cash only. Which is more of an observation than an actual complaint. Gracias Angel! Oh! And don't forget to explore their awesome hot and green sauces with everything you order. Super legit!

The first thing that I loved when we went here yesterday is the fact that it is only blocks away from my wife's work. Perfect for meeting her for lunch. The second thing that I figured out after doing some research on them is that I expected the food to be great based on Manuel Lopez's prior experience. ( Ex. Blue Hour Sous Chef ) What I didn't expect is for the food to have as many layers of flavor to seemingly simple dishes. Was I wrong! Not only were the flavors there, they are done with love and made fresh every time as an order comes in. We were there at 12:15 and still had our food in 15 minutes. My favorite item out of the 4 were the Panchos. But the Steak Burrito, Pork Tacos and Salbutes were are very good too. Parking can be an issue when busy but I love supporting an ex sous chef out trying to start his own place. I wish him well and I told him when we were there to keep up the great work!

This place is bomb!! The food so close, if not exactly, like the Mexican food my uncle (from Mexico) cooks. I seriously recommend this place!!

One of the greatest benefits of living in Portland is finding small restaurants that are owned by people who are passionate about what they do. Angel food and fun is one great example of just that. The dining area is a small place with a few tables. They are connected to what seems like a bar/tavern. As you walk up to the counter to order your food there is a sign stating to please be patient as everything is made fresh and to order. (We never waited very long for our food) We ordered "Panuchos". Fried crisp handmade tortillas topped with lettuce; pickled cabbage; pickled red onions; tomato; avocado; jalapeño with your choice of chicken or beef. There is a ring of refried beans sitting right on the edge of the whole tortilla too. Wow amazing taste with all the flavors melding together. The refried beans add a nice earthiness to the dish. Next was the "Salbutos". Almost the same as the Panuchos without the refried beans. Again great flavors Of course had to order a pulled pork taco. Perfect spices; savory and tender. Last but not least was the chicken burrito. Chicken; lettuce; rice; black beans; cheddar cheese and guacamole. Simple ingredients but so perfectly balanced. As some other reviewers have said, probably one of the best chicken burritos I have ever ate. So 6 items for 23 bucks including tip! Wow! Great food; nice people and great prices!

Finally stopped in here with some friends, sure glad that I did! Prices are pretty decent, and food was delicious. I had an empanada, two pork tacos, and a 7-up for six dollars. Cannot go wrong with that. When I arrived, I hadn't realized that this place is Cash only, thankfully they have an ATM right next door, and that was really the only issue I had with this wonderful little hole in the wall. I look forward to trying more food the next time.

I had never heard of a Panucho or a Salbute before reading reviews of Angel food and Fun but they are a new favorite. The first time I stopped by this place to give it a try I was confused and weirded out since I walked into the "Fun" part of the restaurant, which is a sleazy looking gambling hall run by an asian women before figuring out there is a separate part of the business where the food is served, only to leave hungry since I had no cash on me. But once I ate my first Panucho I was hooked and I have been back 4 times in the last month. A new hidden cheap eats gem in my NE neighborhood.

Yummy Steak Burrito and love the Pork Tacos. It is definitely a hidden gem in Cully. Cash only so hit the arm before. Great service and cool atmosphere. There is also pool next door. My kinda spot.

I really feel that I must elaborate on my previous review which was (in it's entirety): "Totally legit Yucatan style Mexican food" Which, while accurate really doesn't say anything. So please, let me elaborate: Best Menudo in Portland. Mind you that it is Menudo Rico (no hominy). That being said, the broth is amazing. Hand Made Tortillas. Amazing! Panuchos and Salbutos. Don't know what they are? Guess you should try one of each. Very nice folks that own the place / work here. Cold Beer. Do you need anything else?

Note the five star review. I had to subtract a star for crazy parking situation but I would add 5 more stars if I could for unbelievable food! I travel every week all over North America including Texas, New Mexico....I graduated from high school in San Diego and used to go to TJ about once a month. We lived in Scottsdale Arizona for 9 years before moving back to Oregon about 4 years ago. We vacation in Cabo occasionally. Angel Food & Fun is as good as ANY Mexican food that I have ever had. We had 3 Panuches and 3 Salbutos on Friday night. The bill was $11.00. It is now Sunday afternoon and we are still talking about the amazing flavors. Please do yourself a favor and hustle over to Angel Food & Fun. Tiros de culo y las bolas!

  • CJ J.

Outstanding food in a charming, quirky little hole-in-the-wall. The menudo (ask and they'll give you some of the calves foot!), the panuchos and the pibli are all first rate. I'm sure the other stuff is great too, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Easily some of the best Mexican food in Portland.

The BEST burrito I've every had. Drove up from Salem to stay the night in PDX before our morning flight. Found this place on Yelp. I wouldn't have ever stopped here just drinking by, but I'm glad I found it. Who knew food could taste so good.

A good friend recommended this hole-in-wall Mexican restaurant for good food at great prices. I've been disappointed by most Portland Mexican restaurants. This place is wonderful, unless you are trying to impress people by the atmosphere. No table service. You ordered at the front counter. There is a white board with plenty of specials. Both of us loved our food - at cheap prices. This hidden-away restaurant is my new favorite Mexican restaurant. Don't blink or you will miss it.

The chicken burrito and empanadas are outstanding! And the green sauce is great. Can't wait to try more on the menu. Went back today and tried the cochinita pibil. Wow, so tasty.

  • Jim J.

The Yucatecan food is here is special. This is not a toss it together burrito joint. We were happy to grab a beer next door and wait a few extra minutes for the dishes Manuel Lopez is creating here. The tamales, relleno negro and cochinita were all fantastic. The pickled cabbage, red onions and habanero are all used to perfectly balance the savory flavors.

I've written a review in the past but I must update since I attend frequently. I'm now addicted to their burritos that have fried cheese in them!!! Oh my God!!! I eat quite a lot of Mexican food. And it takes quite a lot to impress me. Burritos usually dont. But these. These!!! I've brought a lot of friends here that are now huge fans. Bang for yo buck, certainly.

  • Erin P.

This place rocks. I tried it today for the first time after reading the reviews. I got the tamales, tacos, and salbutes. The tamales are amazing , unbelievably moist. They may be the best tamale I've ever had. The salbute is great as well. The tacos were a little dissapointing which made it lose a star for me. I like cilantro onion tacos more than ones with lettuce and tomato like they have here. I'll be back :)

this place is small but definitely worth the wait! they do take to go orders over the phone as well. I have never experienced yucatecan food before, but when angel food and fun is compared to most traditional Mexican places I frequent, they come out on top. the cochinita pibil is amazing! the entree stew with pickled onions and banana leaf has huge chunks of tender, flavorful pork. I also love eating the cochinita in tacos (I wish it was an option for the salbutes) the panuchos are great for fans of crunchy tacos but I am a bigger fan of the salbutes, tacos with a fluffy handmade tortilla. my only complaint is that you only have a choice of chicken or carne azada; both of which are just average. empanadas are pretty good, larger and flatter than most I have tried before, but full of pork/onion flavory goodness I've had great food experience here, can't wait to try the rest of the menu! also holy crap they have spicy salsa

This is my favorite taqueria in Portland. The owners are extremely hard-working, welcoming, and so proud of the food they serve. They are proud to be different than other taquerias -don't expect a big plate of chips or super greasy Americanized fare. I have brought a lot of meat-eating friends here and they are blown away by the food. I say this because I have only tried a few of the vegetarian items or dishes that are easily modifiable. The chef is only too happy to cook to your specifications -just don't stray too far from the original! I would need a whole separate review to give credit to the hot sauces crafted daily here. There's a jalapeno and a habanero -pretty standard for taquerias. But there's nothing standard about these sauces. They are the BEST hot sauces I've ever had. I dream of pairing these sauces with my favorite avocado-based tomatillo sauce from Taqueria Can-Cun in San Francisco. But Angel Food & Fun wins. Plus, did I mention how fabulous the owners are? Come on down to my neighborhood and try anything on the menu out :) You'll be back!

Fantastic, authentic yucatan style mexican food. We sampled a lot of the appetizers and everything was delicious. The chef ( maybe owner) came out and chatted with us as well. Can't wait to return for a pollo Asada burrito. We heard that was fabulous too. Our new go to mexican spot.

In a residential area. Weren't sure we were at the right place. Service was prompt and people was very nice. Food was great. Very fresh. Never had Yucatan food before. Surprisingly very fresh delicious. Steak panuchos had bean filling. Chicken salbutes were yummy. Definitely will go back.

Had lunch with my 3 cousins, place is spotless, the owner is very helpful. The food was amazing, this is not American Mexican food. Everything is prepared fresh. Not going to tell you what we had, as I want you to go and order what you might like. I'll just say everything we had was very good. My total bill was $6.00 and I was happily satisfied. Sometimes things aren't what they appear to be on the outside.

When I was getting ready to move to Portland from the Bay Area, I was warned left and right by my friends that Portland has either "no Mexican food" or "shitty Mexican food." Not.True. There are fewer legit places here to go to than in California, I'll give you that. But if you are willing to take a 15 minute drive, you can find some really special stuff. This place is proof. Yucatan seems to be Portland's regional cuisine of choice, and this place doesn't f*&k around. Everything on the menu is good. Everything on the menu is cheap. Eat food purchased from this place, and you will be pleased with your decision.

Some of the best food I've had in Portland. Not always the most consistent portions, though. Try everything. It's seriously all good. Relleno Negro is amazing. Burritos are the best I've had here, and they aren't absurdly sized. But then again, they're so good I usually want more. Win some, lose some I guess.

Drove past this place a few times since I'm new to the neighborhood. Sitting at home bored I look on yelp for suggestions for a eating place and figured why not. I have the veggie burrito (the only vegetarian option) and it was worth it - freshly made with peppers, tomato, lettuce, black beans, cheese, sour cream and guacamole - this was an evenly balanced burrito. My boyfriend had the steak burrito and remarked it was the best burrito he's had in a while (sorry la Bonita). worth a visit

This place is so good!!!!!!! I had a panucho (delicious!!!!) and a chicken burrito, and yum, yum, yum!! The owner is super nice and came by to see how we liked everything, and explained how the burrito is made a bit differently. It was simply great. I wish I lived a bit closer, although, that could be dangerous! The only thing that would make this place better for me is having the silverware and water easily accessible for the customers so one doesn't have to ask the kind staff for each thing needed, and serving margaritas ;)

The reviewers are right - Angel Food & Fun makes killer burritos. Both the chicken and steak are amazing. Their panuchos and salbutes are also delicious. I'm looking forward to trying several of their other dishes. So happy to have them in the neighborhood! A heads up that they are cash only now.

  • Brittney M.

I love the panucho and tamales so much I haven't ventured too far off them. I'm sure the rest of the menu is great but a chicken panucho with their hot green salsa is pretty sublime. Their tamales are incredibly moist, banana leaf style. I also think their black beans are pretty amazing. Only drawback is it takes a while to get your food, and you need to pay cash.

  • Holly H.

We have been trying to get in for a year. Finally made it. The food is great, fresh and well prepared. The frijol con puerco was so satisfying, warm and yummy. The black beans that came with the plato azado were amazing! They were puréed and so flavorful. You could just eat them all by themselves. Looking around everyone's food looked delicious. I hear the menudo is good, not really my cup of tea. They are a bit out of the way, unless you live in Cully, but worth a visit. It's is the neighborhood spot you all wish was just down the street from your house.

All I can say is this: I've been once only, and need to go there again.... SOON!

Was slightly wary as I drove up to this joint but I'm glad I went in. It's a unique spot adjacent to a bar but the food was delicious and I will certainly be back!

Wow! It looks like I'm hitting this place up about once a month which, for me, is crazy! I took a few West-side friends here the other night. I wanted them to try the Cochinita Pibil. Unfortunately we were a little early and we were told it needed at least two more hours to finish it's slow roasting. Okay, I'll start with the some Salbutes and Panuchos and finish with Relleno Blanco (see previous update for Relleno Negro). The Salbutes and Panuchos were a big hit. One of the lighter eaters said that, next time, she would make her meal out of them. The others at the table had the Rellenos Negro and the Menudo (tripe), both meal-sized bowls and both finished to the shine. You know a place is good when everyone walks out saying, "I have to take 'so and so' here. I'll add to that, "and I need to try the Poc-Chuc next time."

So yummy! Unique, complex, and fresh and the price is right. Try it out -- haven't been disappointed by anything on the menu!

My husband is from the Yucatan peninsula and this is as authentic as it gets. We drive all the way from Beaverton to NE Portland to get some good food. We love the sopes, menudo, salbutes and panuchos. The food is cooked to order so if you are in a rush this isn't the place for you. If you're wiling to wait then it is totally worth it and you are getting fresh food. The staff is super nice and has service with a smile. Please keep in mind that this is not American style mexican food. This is authentic food from Southern Mexico.

Bombtastic. Amazing Yucatan style Mexican food. We had Puerco Pibil and it did not disappoint. New favorite.

Delicious, authentic Yucatan food in the middle of nowhere. Had beans (heavenly) and rice with Cochinita Pibil (a pork dish) and it was heaven. We also tried the tamales, which are very different in their moistness and flavor than what most think of as a tamale; really great. We will return soon. I hope the weird location does not keep anyone away...their missing something really good if it does.

I really wish this place was better its so close to my house and I need a go to mexican joint . Ive been twice the first was pretty decent we got various tacos and rice and beans. Pretty good even though they were out of 1/2 the menu. One week later went back they still were out of 1/2 the menu. Ordered what they had and rice/beans. Took it to go had one bite of the beans and spit them out burnt! Horrible so pissed cant ever go back the tacos weren't good either. Consistency is the key why cant restaurants understand that. That and tasting your food those beans should never have left the kitchen.

Their tamales are the best I've ever had, makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The panuchos are delicious as well. As others have said, their location is odd...But it's totally worth stopping for. Patience is a virtue when visiting, waited 1/2 hour for a small takeout order...Still worth the wait!

***New ownership, new menu. The tamales are really good, the burritos are generous and delicious, and the tacos have grilled onions in them and that was a great new addition.*** It was a rocky beginning, but now the food is fantastic! Oh yeah, super inexpensive for what you get.

Chef Santos, the talented owner of Angel (PLEASE CHANGE THE NAME!) is an excellent cook and he will whip up whatever you order, as long as it is delicious, authentic Yucatan food. On the board, there are the Mayan-Mestizo staples, which are still uncommon in most Mexican eateries: Relleno negro, Manjar blanco, Cochinita Pibil, Poc Chuc. But you could tell Santos you feel like having papadzules or stuffed cheese or deer pipian and he'll make it! or tell you, if it is unusually difficult, to come pick it up the next day... Try all the strange things, like the "tacos de Xim" or the Choco Lomo, to really have your palate exploding with adventure... AWESOME!

4+ Stars! This place is delicious! Ive always seen it around the corner from me, and never ventured in. I saw some excellent reviews posted here, and thought I would give it a try. Im glad I did. I tried one of almost everything. Everything was delicious. It came with this watery looking pale red liquid that was the salsa. It tasted amazing! My favorite was the Cochinita taco. Holy cow delicious! The Panuchos where amazing as well, everything was just delicious. I would of gave it 5 stars, the taste is worth 5 for sure. I got a bone in one of my tacos, and that kinda sucked, but I was still happy with my meal and my local find. I would still come here even if I lived out of the neighborhood.

This spot hidden at NE 60th and Sumner is a treat. I went simple for lunch and just got the cochinita torta. But it was awesome. Tender and moist, it was delicious. The bolilla was nice and soft, soaking juices but keeping its crust. The torta was simple with cabbage and lime, not a huge meal, but ample for my $5. Everyone was very friendly in this small restaurant. I didn't go into the attached pool hall/bar, but there were a number of tables. They're probably pretty decent, I seem to recall that this location had previously been an Asian billiards joint. I will definitely be back to try out the other Yucatecan dishes.

What I had was Absolutely Terrible. The relleno negro soup. If you like watery soup that is black and tastes like charcoal, has some shredded chicken and a few pieces of gristle and a couple bones floating around in it you'll love it. Probably one of the worst things I've ever seen or eaten. Actually I didn't eat much of it....only a few bites of chicken, until I found the bone and a couple tastes of the black charcoal broth. For $10 bucks I at least wanted to taste it...by golly. (I know what a roasted chili tastes like and this ain't it, this is more like ashes from Grampy's Wood Stove.) And how three people sitting in this small place can stare for a 1/2 hour at a huge big screen tv blasting (I mean LOUD) Spanish music and watching a bunch of people dancing at a wedding somewhere down in Mexico during lunch is beyond me.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
