I pass through downtown Milwaukie daily on my morning commute and with all the crazy construction going on these days I was directed to head down Washington St instead of my normal route and this cute coffee shop caught my attention. Stopped in this morning to give it a try. The space is cute, intimate, and clean. 4-5 tables, and sofa seating. One lady was working, I assume the Painted Lady herself, and she was friendly, helpful and service was quick. Pastries are homemade and tasty - we had banana bread - moist and flavorful, lattes are perfect and prices are reasonable. I just found my new go to coffee shop! Check this spot out you'll be back again, it's a little piece of heaven in the heart of downtown Milwaukie. Support Local business!

I LOVE Painted Lady!! The service and coffee are always great, but the thing that inspired me to review it was the gingerbread. This is hands down the BEST gingerbread I have ever had in my life. An amazing blend of spices, and a subtle glaze that perfectly compliments the bread. The first time I bought it, I was on my way to work, and once there, I had an internal struggle with wanting to share this fantastic treat with my co-workers vs. having it all to myself. I'm embarrassed to say that selfishness won out. Next time, I'll buy more and share.

Good coffee, great, fresh, real home made and elegant food! Super nice staff. I want them next to my house! They'll need a bigger space soon!

Fantastic breakfast sandwich on a croissant, ok coffee. The service was quick and super friendly and the place had a nice quiet feel to it. I recommend it if you're around.

This is my favorite place to go to in downtown Milwaukie. My friends and I love coming here to meet up and have lunch

This woman is doing the Lord's work. Everything that comes out of her kitchen is so good. No joke. From the tiniest little cookie (or a giant one) to sandwiches, soups, quiche, all. Since my first review, they've really settled in and there is a great comfy-cozy vibe there. Very cool artists display work here. They've got beer and wine, now, too! I adore this store.

Excellent coffee and amazing food. My only complaint is that they aren't open on Sunday. Everyone deserves a day of rest though!

I recommend all my clients and friends to haunt the Painted Lady Coffee House. Jill the owner has taken this little shop that was once like a small bit of coal and turned it into a gem of a place to get home made food and treats. Good coffee, good food, great service. The heart of this business is in the right place. One bite at a time. Delicious. Daily haunt worthy.

Cool place! I love their outdoor seating! Why, oh why, Painted Lady, are you not open on Sundays? I went a few Saturdays ago and had a latte iced and a rhubarb danish. Was a nice place. I was able to pay with a card. I think they have wifi? I might have been picking up wifi from somewhere else nearby or I might have just read a book on my tablet, I can't recall. I'd guess they have wifi. Kinda small, I'd say 4-5 tables inside and 2-3 outside? Cool place though. Menu looked tempting. I'd be happy to try more items. Wish they had longer hours/more days of service.

Try the cheesecake. You won't be disappointed! And they are constantly rotating flavors so plenty of variety. Also, count yourself lucky if you get a cinnamon roll on Friday or a Danish on Saturday before they have sold out! Lots of fresh baked goodies to choose from, great coffee, and awesome service. Best coffee house in Milwaukie, hands down. Maybe even in all of the Portland area?

This place is great. Everything they have is delicious. My favorite is the creamy tomato blue cheese soup. New specials on the board everyday and cool artists featured each month. Staff is always friendly and prompt. I love Painted Lady Coffee!

I think the food here is a solid 4 stars -- good coffee, great bagels. As a vegan, however, I can really only give it 3 stars. The only bagel option is a quinoa bagel (which I added hummus, tomato, and spinach to). They have almond and soy milk for lattes. The food was excellent, but an unfortunate lack of variety for vegans. Staff is friendly, the building itself is no frills. Looks like fun food pastry options if you're non-vegan. Bottom line: worth a stop if you're not vegan. If vegan, it's probably not worth repeat visits for anything but coffee.

Still my favorite place in Milwaukie for coffee or a light breakfast/lunch. Quiche, pastries, and espresso drinks remain unfailingly great.

Ahhhh, just arrived from out of state to visit a friend. Been up since 4am, resisted the Starbucks x3 at the airport and so happy we did. This place is the perfect spot for a good espresso, pastry and breakfast sand which. The service was quick, friendly and attentive, the place has a nice vibe and we are feeling pretty fortunate to have landed here!

Best quiche ever, hands down! Nice, golden brown flakey crust! And warm, friendly service with a smile! Great way to start the day! I never have any complaints when I come here!

Haven't tried the food really (just got a toasted bagel one time) but the coffee is great!

Great coffee, wonderful service, fair prices. After sampling all the coffee shops in downtown Milwaukie, The Painted Lady is my favorite. Consistency is very important to me and you will find it here. Have a scone...they're amazing!

This place has fantastic food, good coffee friendly staff and mimosas !! What more could you ask for !?!?!? There is inside and outside seating the art is local and always changing. Our favorite is the biscuits and gravy and the jalapeño bagel it's all either made fresh at the cafe or another local bakery/cafe.

This place was disappointing. My decaf cappuccino ordered turned out to not be decaf after all AND was very bitter and flat tasting. The apple coffee cake was ok but was just set on a plate, still in the plastic wrap, and delivered to the table still cold from the refrigerated case with no fork. I hope you have better success than I did there.

Found this cafe while in the area for a volleyball tournament. Scones and other bakery items baked daily. Had a hot chocolate that was just the right sweetness and richness. Good choice!!!

Delicious and appropriately strong coffee, amazing pastries. Small inside, a little loud. As other reviews have mentioned, not great selection for vegans. The cakes look amazing and I hear that you can preorder whole ones...

My husband and I are new to the area and decided to check this place out today. The coffee was good, nothing overly exciting. I ordered the biscuits and gravy which, again, wasn't anything too special. My husband ordered a BLT and it was awesome! You could tell the bread was homemade and it was delicious! The bacon slices were thick and cooked perfectly. We will definitely be back to try more based on that one sandwich. I will say that the staff was incredibly friendly, service was excellent and very quick. She even gave us a dog biscuit for our puppy while we were outside waiting for our order. :)

First of all, I am bothered by the review below me because the author tells everyone to not buy the food because it doesn't LOOK special. People, don't review something if you haven't actually tried it. The food IS really yummy! And it doesn't cost more than any other place that is not fast food. The owner makes everything fresh in the kitchen. ANYWAYS. This coffee shop is a welcome addition to downtown Milwaukie. Despite there being a couple others in the area, it does fill a gap. I am referring to the fancy pastries and cakes she makes fresh daily! Milwaukie Kitchen & Wine has some, but they don't have a lot by way of selection unless you count the pricey gluten-free options from other bakeries. She also whips up different lunch specials every day that more resemble home made meals. The portion sizes are also generous for the price tag. No one else does this! This morning I had an iced latte and a blueberry muffin. They were both good. The muffin was very fluffy and light for being a muffin, and the blueberries were HUGE and fresh.

This is probably the best coffee shop I've been to. Great locally owned option. The staff is always friendly and the owner is invested in the community.

I usually love the carrot cake, but the size you get varies too much. It depends on who is cutting it I guess. Today I got the mini-version - way too small and it was a bit dry (perhaps because half the cake was gone). Second time that's happened, and it's disappointing. I don't know if I will go back again. Probably not.

Let's face facts: Milwaukie doesn't really have a lot of options for good coffee or baked goods, and definitely none as good as Painted Lady Coffee House, which would stand on it's own in any Portland neighborhood. Proprietor and Baker Jill Younce is, in fact, painted with many colorful tattoos. It turns out that Jill and I both happen to appreciate tattoos, as well as art, and punk rock music, so we struck up a solid rapport right away, and I felt like a valued customer the first time I walked through the door! However, I noticed that Jill also remembers all of her other customers by name, and she impressively remembers all of their drink requests and favorite treats. I've heard her on numerous occasions say, "Hi ____, how are you? Would you like your usual ____?" So, in short, it seems that Jill understands customer service, and she definitely understands baking, as the products Jill is crankin' out are about as good as you'll find anywhere in the city. The glass case is always stacked with fresh baked goodies for days! Muffins, pastries, cheese danish (which are fucking awesome, BTW), apple coffee cake, a different variety of fresh baked scones every day, brownies, cinnamon rolls, bagels from Gabriel's Bakery, and every other delicious and delectable treat you could need or want. In addition, Jill and her crew make some delicious breakfast bagel sandwiches, and serves up an awesome lunch special every day, complete with great local beers, and service with a smile. And the quiche? Holy shit. I'm part French, part German, and as strange is it sounds, I don't even like quiche that much, but I'd gladly eat this quiche several days of the week if I could. I almost forgot the mention the coffee, and the espresso drinks! I'm more of a shot in the dark with cream kinda guy, but Jill and her crew can make any drink you want with the best of 'em. I've enjoyed a few great cappuccinos and lattes here, and I have yet to experience anything less than great from this cozy little shop in Old Town Milwaukie. As difficult as business has been in downtown Milwaukie with the light rail construction, this shop seems to be busy as ever, and I highly recommend going out of your way to visit the awesome coffee shop and chill hangout spot for breakfast, lunch, or both. If you live in Milwaukie, or you're just passing by, stop by Painted Lady, and tell Jill I sent you. I'm sure you'll find a delicious morsel that'll make your day that much more enjoyable. Painted Lady Coffee House definitely makes my morning better every time I walk through the door.

The coffee and quiche are quite good, I've never had a daily special soup/lunch that wasn't great, the service is friendly and the decor rotates various local artists through. But it's the baked goods and desserts which blow everything else out of the water. The croissants and scones and cheesecake etc. are splendid, and the crusts make them divine. I don't even like crusts, generally with pie or cheesecake I don't eat them, or I eat them first to get it out of the way. Not so with these. The mocha nanaimo bars and bacon scones may be the best things I've ever had from a coffee shop.

The food is "as good as it gets". It is a very small but, varied menu. Two Friends-in-Dine joined me for lunch yesterday, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012. It was a little hard to find as the building number was not visible. I give you the following to let you know that while it was hard to find for the following reasons, it was worth it. The front has a large black awning over the sidewalk. The awning front says only "Coffee House". This is Oregon for god's sake. EVERY corner has a "coffee house". The front window does have the name and cute logo. I couldn't see it or the signboard on the sidewalk as it was hidden by the cars parked out front. I would like to see the awning sides have the "Painted Lady" name on them. I ordered the Biscuits and Sausage Gravy. I wanted scrambled eggs, too. Unfortunately, they were not included in the offering. I asked if she, The Painted Lady, could make a side order. She could, and did. My plate arrived swiftly and HOT! The Gravy was rich. It tastes like she uses real cream to make her cream gravy. The sausage was incredibly flavorful with a small zing of red pepper flakes. Plentiful gravy laid atop two open faced whole wheat biscuits. I had not expected whole wheat biscuits. I don't recall that detail from the menu. Turns out these were two of the lightest, yet not fall apart, buttery biscuits I have EVER had. And I have had a LOT! I could not stop "yum"ming. FID 1 had a salad with no tomatoes (she is in there often enough they know her by now and she does not even have to ask them to keep the tomatoes out [allergy]) with soup. She loved it. I cannot recall what she had. FID 2 had the salad, with Spinach and Tomato Quiche. Both were excellent. The crust was incredibly flaky but, not at all fall apart. I have no idea how she did that. The quiche itself was fresh and yellow. Too often quiches with spinach tends to turn the egg custard an off green color. Not this one. Thin slices of tomato perfectly crisped sat atop. Desert is not to be missed. I had the German Chocolate Cake. My only issue was that it was cold. Which, under food rules it must be. I prefer cake at room temp. Temp allows the moisture and full flavor of the chocolate and icing to be enjoyed. Either way, it was excellent. A large slice with generous icing on top and between the layers. The chocolate iced edges and side were excellent butter cream. Maybe a touch less sweet on that would be better. But, I am NOT complaining. I also had a taste (counter top offering) of the Blondie Brownie and nearly melted. A square of that went home with me for the next day (today). Again, I melted. It was so moist and full of flavor it nearly melted me into my seat. Prices were incredibly reasonable. Seating is limited. Our server was happy, responsive, fun, and quite good. I WILL go back again. You should too.

Yummy! The cream puffs... all I can say is yummy! Amazing baked goods. I also had a vanilla soy latte to go with my sugar fix. My boyfriend was in complete silence as he ate his sticky bun (I believe he was in heaven). If I lived closer I'd be here all the time and weigh a million pounds. Yummy Yummy Yummy

Service is fast and friendly. Cozy and simple seating area. Delicious house-made pastries. I had a ginger cookie sandwich stuffed with lemon cream and a key lime coconut bar. I really want to sample everything in their pastry case. They also have a California style lunch menu. I will definitely visit again when I'm in the area.

Its so pretty inside! Your basic coffee shop, I just like it because its nice and relaxed with out a punk rock guy behind the counter hitting on every girl who comes in (which is a lot of the coffee shops in the area) I stop by here on my way home from work sometimes. I wouldn't buy the food though, costy and doesn't look special.

I've only been here once, but I will be back! Best scones that I've ever had. Monday mornings just got a bit better. A happy addition to the Milwaukie coffee scene.

By far the best coffee and pastries in Oregon, the owner is as sweet and unique as her danish! If you haven't ordered one I suggest you do! Breakfast varies from simple to full on! Her micro brew coffee courtesy of black beard is not bitter, so if Starbucks bitter is your preference please stay at starbucks. I hope in the least Milwaukie will represent, and help her thrive! My Partner and I go Monday through Friday excited to see the new delights!

Probably the best coffee shop experience I've ever had. Consistent and friendly and inviting. I frequent this shop a number of times per week - everything is so fresh and of such high quality, you cannot go wrong!

Jill , Sarah and there crew always do a fine job and create a large variety of the good stuff. Good stuff meaning excellent pastries and treats that take the edge off of hunger in between the real meals. They make a great breakfast sandwich that will hold you over for the entire day. The coffeee is great and they have a fully stocked fridge of Monster energy drinks. There location is perfect, check them out. I am not a fan of ginger (the spice) but they do have alot of different ginger items.
