Excellent food. Enormous portions. I had teriyaki chicken with brown rice. Absolutely delicious. The leftovers made two more meals! Cannot beat the value.

This was by far some of the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Nothing tasted good and everything looked the same. I had there sesame chicken, chow mein, and fried shrimp for lunch. I couldn't tell which one was the shrimp and which one was the chicken, they looked the exact same. The chow mein was basically bean sprouts and a veggies. The sesame chicken was just breaded with sweet ketchup like sauce on the side. When I eat sesame chicken, I expect it to have real sesame sauce. I went with a few friends to this place because of them raving about it, but the sesame chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and the fried shrimp all looked the exact same with just different color sauces. Overall, I would never recommend this place to anyone.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Salem area. One of the reasons I like it is that it has a drive up window. That's great when I want take-out and it is raining really hard. I go here a lot in the winter. I often just pick up a large egg-drop soup. We also like their egg foo young. The vegetables are crisp and the sauce is not too heavy.

  • Heather C.

Love the Lemon Chicken and when you order something extra spicy it comes that way!!!

  • Lewis Marklin M.

Ok first of all a Chinese place called John's? Well the food is as unauthentic as the name. I don't even want to describe it cause it might bring back bad memories that I don't want to relive! A friend, former player for the LA Dodgers died so I was out of sorts and stopped in here for dinner if you want to call it that and mind you I have had fish balls soup before even. All I can say is Dim Sum? No, Dim None. Bad bad bad

  • Renee F.

Best Chinese in Salem area. huge portions, white meat chicken, very hot and fresh. The Mandarin Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Mongolian Beef are all scrumptious, really good egg rolls. Love this place!

Good prices, big portion sizes.....but if you get you food to go check the box to make sure its the right order....

  • Eric M.

Did not eat the food, it looked unappetizing. We talked to the waitress and explained that one of the dishes was not what we wanted. She didn't seem to eager to help, I asked her to get her manager.. Told the manager the problem, they spoke Chinese at our table in front of me, I asked them to speak English! That was rude, what followed was just terrible customer service with no people skills. They told us they would not bring us a new dish and that we had to eat it. We left... Now they can eat all three dishes!!!

This place is amazing. The service is always prompt and the servers are very nice. The food is amazing. The Kung pao beef and chicken are to die for. Always delicious. Plus they have a drive thru for the call in orders.

  • Jeff H.

Excellent Chinese food. We called in ahead of time to do the drive-thru option, which is convenient. But be aware, there is a little bit of a language barrier. The menu lists only one price for each item, but I was asked if I wanted a large or small order of each item. We opted for the large order of each. General Tsao's Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken, and beef fried rice, along with a barbecue pork appetizer. When I rolled up, the order didn't seem to be ready. I waited a little bit, but when the young lady returned with my credit card, she also had my order, and everything was hot. So I was okay with that. First off, it was A LOT of food. I was a little stunned by the price (over 30 bucks for two of us), but mostly that was because we ordered the large option and they included so much. The sweet and sour chicken was served as it is most places; the chicken was cut into nuggets and deep fried, with sweet & sour sauce served on the side. Only this time, it seemed like the chicken was hand-breaded. It was super flaky and incredibly delicious. The sauce was a little sweeter than I would have liked, but was very tasty. The beef fried rice was a disappointment. They put in a TON of bean sprouts. It turned what I was looking forward to (a soft, moist, rice dish) into a crispy chore of a meal. I ended up not eating it. I imagine it would have been good, but I have never seen bean sprouts in fried rice before. Ever. And didn't expect it here. Oh well. The General Tsao's chicken was good, and the white rice was decent. All in all, a great place to go. Except for that hiccup in the fried rice, I'd have given it five stars. A good Keizer location to check out.

This is one of my favorite and have not found any place in town that can compare. The food is great, not some American-hybrid cuisine either. I've eaten there too many times to count. There have been times the service was epic and there times we went in and it was slammed busy and it wasn't great. I could eat here daily.

    (4)
  • Valerie W.

Our fav!!!! This is the best Chinese food in Keizer. We order to go here at least twice a month, the kids are huge fans of the crab puffs and the Sub gum.

Good: noodles, veggies, sauces, beverages, prices. Bad: Service, location. Overall I had a good experience and would come again.

  • Akami M.

Love their food and we have always ordered to go at least a couple times every few months for years. The last couple of times, the service has been not so great. They usually say ready in 15 minutes but lately when we go there after waiting 15 minutes, there's another 20 minute wait. Just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

    (3)

A great Yelp find. Very good Chinese food, egg foo Yong was fantastic. Lots of food for 6 I will go here again.

Had to find a new Chinese place after Louie's closed. This is good and fortunately much closer. The egg flower soup is delicious! I always get Johns Incredible Soup-er Bowl. It has chicken, steak, shrimp and noodles...all of my faves. I wish it was more soupy, ie more broth but it is really tasty none the less. My husband gets the Kung Pao and my kids get the subgum. They all come with sides of pork fried rice, bbq pork, shrimp. We always have left overs - the portions are plenty. If you are in the Salem-Keizer area and craving Chinese, John's is the place to go. **Bonus, they also have a drive in window if want orders to go. SUPER convenient!

  • Bob G.

Ordered ahead for take-out. When we got there no one had taken our order. Three employees claimed we must have called a different restaurant. I hit redial on my phone and the phone rang inside the restaurant. Suddenly they located our order. Strange service to say the least. Food was good.

    (3)
  • Michael D.

Best in town also the cheapest in service they love to over price then leave stuff out of your order so they can save money and make more profit

  • Chris S.

Very good food. Kinda skeptical at first by the name, but now its our go to Chinese. Fried rice is as good as it gets. Staff is very friendly.

    (4)
  • Alex W.

I would have given them another star if they would stand to reason and not be so stubborn. They seem to have the best selection and best Chinese food in the Mid Valley. Also, the price is very reasonable for the generous portions. Its as close to the big city as you can get. The menu is several pages and they offer a lot. Its a shame they can't deviate from their menu, though, with substitutions. For example, I like their won ton soup but I don't eat pork. I want to order it without the pork but they want to charge me the same and the soup is almost $8.00, with a big portion of pork in it. Too bad for me. I don't go there anymore. They have a good variety but I spent too much time in Asia and I just wanted the soup.

  • Lara G.

Worst Chinese food I have ever had. It was cold in some places and warm in others. You could tell the food was not fresh. The service was also really bad. I waited 30 minutes for them to bring me some cashews in a little bowl, after they forgot them in my cashew nut chicken. I will not be back.

  • P J.

Mediocre at best. Bland chicken, unimpressive rice, poor atmosphere (Chinese-American chic right down to the wood paneling) The place at Lancaster mall makes better food than this place.

    (2)
  • Don R.

Eaten there twice, food is good, ready in about 15 minutes, very inexpensive and good portions

Clean, cheap, tasty, no-nonsense, mostly Cantonese food. Best egg foo young so far in Salem. I'll be back.

Had to go to oregon to gather my dad's belongings. Needed some good food while I was up there and thankfully Yelp delivered. I'm kind of a vanilla eater when it comes to chinese food. Give me pork fried rice, chow mein, and sweet & sour pork and I"m a happy camper. The chow mein and pork fried rice was nothing short of divine. The sweet and sour pork was too sweet for me, but still had a good tang to it. The food was hot, fresh, and pretty darn good for takeout. Like other reviewers, I was nervous about a chinese food restaurant named "Johns". I'm glad I didn't just a book by it's cover. I ate all the rice, all the chow mein, and half of the sweet and sour pork. OMG it was wonderful. If I ever find myself back in oregon, I'll be stopping here to eat!

I dont give out 5 stars lightly but tonight 5 stars was well earned! Took a chance trying this place out, we had heard it was pretty good but still had some reservations. We ordered via the menu on UrbanSpoon.. which is out of date some.. but worked. We drove down to pick up our order and they have a convenient pickup window. The food smelled good and was brought to the car in a big brown bag. We got the family meal for 2 and it could have fed 4! Cost about 25 bucks. Not bad. The quality is what really shines... the food tasted fresh and the sweet and sour pork and shrimp were perfectly done. Seriously... some of the best Chinese food I have ever had! It was delicious! We are new converts and this is easily our new favorite restaurant. Must try John's if you havent yet. You will love it.

Took my son here before dive class and was pleasantly impressed. The location is in a little strip mall and easy to get in and out of. The service was quick and when looking at the menu was pretty simple. We ordered the combos 1 and 5 and the food came out quick and hot. The portion size is great for 1 growing teenage boy or 2 adults. I took half of mine to go. Prices were amazing, b/c for $20.00 including tip we were both full and I had lunch for the next day. Overall Rating: 86% Service: 4/5 Price: 5/5 Location: 4/5

If it's the weekend and you are terribly hungover, John's is a great option for to-go food if you are in the Keizer area. The best part about this building is the drive-up window so you can roll out of bed, look like crap and not have to leave your car. (Not that I've ever done that...lol) You can call ahead or order at the window. The service is really quick and the portions are HUGE. I love the fried shrimp and the chicken lo mein. John's wouldn't be my first choice for chinese because we have several good options in Salem/Keizer, but it is good for sure.

  • Sylvia D.

I was a little apprehensive about eating at a Chinese restaurant called "John's". I had read the reviews on yelp and was still a little hesitant. It was a combination of laziness and hunger that finally prompted me to go here and I was pleasantly surprised. Customer service was excellent and the food was decently priced. After we ordered the food came fairly quickly and was very good. Just to make sure that I wasn't liking the food out of pure hunger I've eaten there another 2 times in the last week (because my boyfriend was craving the shrimp fried rice then the day after that my brother-in-law was craving the lo mein) and I'm totally sold. This is an all system's go for me. It's right up the street, the prices are decent, there is convenient parking and the servers are extremely nice. They also do takeout and have a little drive thru window on the side.

I've driven by this place many times and never given it a second glance (the fact that it's a Chinese place named "John's" probably has a lot to do with that). But today I had to grab some lunch while I was in Keizer, so I fired up Yelp, and based on the ratings decided to give John's a try. I had the asparagus chicken lunch special for $6.95. The hot & sour soup was not great (kind of watery, too many water chestnuts and not enough tofu or that dark fungus), but the main dish was really nice; lots of asparagus cooked just right, thin slices of tender chicken breast, and a tasty garlicy light sauce. Service was quick, although it was past the lunch rush hour and I think there was only one other customer. Overall, a pretty good place if you want decent Chinese food.

  • Bo L.

This is my son's favorite place to eat (and he's only 4). Personally I wouldn't say that it's the best place in Salem/Keizer to find Chinese food, but it is still very good. Regardless we still eat there frequently and enjoy the food and service. It's located in a small strip mall with limited parking but it does have an additional parking lot in the back, just a short walk from the entrance. Overall it's good. I definitely suggest it.

Found this place through Yelp some time ago and tried it. You could find my old post. I came back to see if it was just a fluke or this was a really good place to eat.

Worst Chinese food I have ever had. It was cold in some places and warm in others. You could tell the food was not fresh. The service was also really bad. I waited 30 minutes for them to bring me some cashews in a little bowl, after they forgot them in my cashew nut chicken. I will not be back.

Mediocre at best. Bland chicken, unimpressive rice, poor atmosphere (Chinese-American chic right down to the wood paneling) The place at Lancaster mall makes better food than this place.

I was pleasantly surprised that it was just as good as last. Service was fast and the food came quickly and hot. Will come back. :)

Very good food and friendly staff. I didn't see any roaches in my food, but it wouldn't upset me. I grew up in the tropics, and we kept roaches as pets:)

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
