Good food trumped by substandard, slow service. We had to wait to be seated...its not crowded (four tables seated). We were more or less ignored once we ordered. "I'll be right back with some bread!" Oh yeah? When? Oh how about ten minutes. Great. There is no hostess...this is not the problem of the customer. I was pleasantly surprised by the food, but extremely turned off by the service. The service alone might keep me away. This is too bad because decent food is hard to find in Monmouth/Independence.

From scratch. Handmade burger buns, fresh-cut French fries, huge breakfasts, and a chef that likes to visit. Does not get much better than that! I am heading over soon to try his hand-selected ribeye steaks and homemade tater tots. Quality, great service, good prices and a beautiful building. One more thing-expect to wait a bit longer for your meal......cooked fresh from scratch takes a bit of time and is definitely worth the wait.

They try but appears the service has not improved. Watched as 4 groups left . The burgers are fantastic. Rolls are soft. Tots homemade. Greg makes some of the best he made foods. I think once the services gets better , mostly good, this place would be a place I would take friends and family. If you want fast food don't go in. You want food you would have at moms ... Go on in..

I was pleasantly taken by surprise as I took my first bite into the western Omelete, which had a complementary spice that came from the homemade salsa, blending perfectly with the chef's delightful sausage bits which I learned later are actually blended with fresh herbs and spices locally in the restaurant. Overall, I would call this a 5-star, class establishment due to the extra friendly wait staff that were knowledgeable, and the owner's engagement and interest into my personal experience and also the other customers that came in at the same time as me. With a grand ambiance, along with hometown service and homemade taste, it was well worth my 12min drive from downtown salem! I'll be coming back here soon. Thanks Gregg!

Ignore the heathen unenlightened and impatient 2 star reviewers. This place is amazing. Hand cut fries. Homemade tater tots and bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Try dipping the tots in the vinegar and then the homemade fry sauce... can you say holy shit? Very relaxing atmosphere and patio seating. The burgers are done to perfection and the staff is friendly and accommodating. If you ate in Independence oregon... eat here.

Can't believe how many options to eat in Independence! This is our friend's favorite. Great bar, beer options and food options. The burgers were recommended and I had trouble deciding on which one. Went with caramelized onion and goat cheese. Good and plenty of onions but could use a little more cheese. Still would try it again. Also split a buffalo chicken salad. Awesome spice and chunky blue cheese. Nice chunks of chicken and fresh tomato. Great service and willingness to modify and split orders.

The owner, Greg is absuloutly delightful which is just the extra touch to a delicious menu. Everything is made from scratch! All the meats are just amazing! Might as well try whatever you think sounds appealing because it is all great! I came with a large volleyball team and we ate everything! Sidenote: if you like zucchini fries, you will love these! Tatar tots are hand rolled, buns are made fresh, mac and cheese are 60% cheese 40% noodles. The best! Thank you so much to Greg and his staff we were a large group and you accommodated amazingly!

Nicely decorated, nicely staffed, attentive to detail. We ordered the cod and chips, nicely portioned and what you'd expect. My friend ordered pulled pork and some tacos as it was taco Tuesday. He lived everything in his plate. My husband had the old McDonald burger and upgraded to onion rings. This was the only thing he didn't like. They charged 3.00 for the onion ring substitution. He received 4 onion rings. Otherwise, a nice change.

Awesome service and great Steak salad as well as burgers, the fried zucchini was a great starter crispy and moist not soggy. I haven't been here since it was the old river steak house and I wish I would have tried it sooner because it was such a great experience and yummy food.

I went here last night for the first time since it switched from Raging River. It was pretty quiet, not a lot of people there. Which I hope is rare and that this place can maintain its food quality and stay in business because it was GOOD! I ordered the bangers and mash (best mashed potatoes ever, specialty sausages from portland, and perfect veggies) and my partner ordered the salmon fish and chips with their HOMEMADE TATOR TOTS. Amazing. However, I wouldn't have known any of these awesome ingredients were included because the menu does not self promote at all. I think that the business needs to do some real promoting of the food and not just list the items because until I knew that the hamburger buns were homemade or that the meat comes from a place in portland I wasn't that interested. The food is great. Go. You won't be disappointed. There is some other work to be done with the restaurant, just doesn't involve the recipes :)

This place is amazing! First of all the waitstaff is wonderful, welcomed us with open arms! We were seated quickly and pleasantly and not short after, our waitress came to take our order. Perceptive waitstaff paid the perfect amount of attention, not too much to make us feel smothered but enough to feel like we mattered. The food was just as perfect, just as the waitstaff was genuine all the food is made from scratch and it shows in the flavors. We ordered a simple Ceasar salad that was fresh and not drenched in dressing, two different types of mac and cheese that were so flavorful and not super greasy, and the fish and chips. The fish and chips were exellent, the batter was light and airy and the fish was flakey and cooked to perfection. The drinks were just as good, they have a great selection of beer and the mixed drink was so tasty. The atmosphere is homey, everything is pleasant, and we were even given two visits from the owner. We had a great conversation, chatted about families, and were offered an invitation to perform at his restaurant! For a culinary experience, this is at the top of the list!

One star for the building. Staff was nice but disorganized. Waited an hour for omelettes and biscuits & gravy. Coffee was blah. We had to serve our selves refills because servers never came back to check. There was an awkward quiet... No music. Food was ok, nothing to write home about. We ordered drinks and they weren't very good either. Over priced for the taste and quality. And it was not busy. Lastly when it was time to pay, they said our card was declined. What!? I have over draft protection so I know that was b.s. but embarrassing none the less. I had to ask 3 times( 2 different cards) for them to run my card and it finally worked. Obviously something wrong with their machine.

I heard the ownership changed and Wow is it different. Can't imagine a better evening. Staff was friendly, service was very attentive, and food was some of the best we have had in years. Had the chef's special that day, Beef Stroganoff and it was melt in your mouth good. The Salmon was cooked perfectly and served on a bed of great vegetables. It is well worth the drive from Salem. The outside patio is the perfect spot for a nice summer dinner.

The restaurant has been opened 2 weeks and well worth the visit. The recipes were American; but execution was great. Fluffy eggs, home-made hashbrowns that were crisp, home-made biscuits hot out of the oven. Ditto on pancakes. Was a delightful experience. An extra treat was that the owner dropped by our table and talked with us for a while. He shared part of his life story with us which was the icing on our meal. Wait staff were friendly, attentive and professional. Great little place.

A little overpriced. The waitress tried hard but the food was pretty lousy.

The wife loved their grits. I had the cinnamon apple french toast today, it was excellent. The service was great. Our waitress was friendly, nice, and attentive. The atmosphere is pleasant and the 70s music was very nice. Also the cleanliness was too notch.

I've been in twice during the last month and enjoyed both trips. Great service! Servers are very friendly and always take good care of us. Drinks, complimentary bread, and our meals arrived in a timely manner. Food was yummy and portions were quite large. I also enjoy the atmosphere, we sat in the booths along the wall. These booths have high dividers which offer privacy for a more romantic feeling meal which is something that sets The Independence Grill apart from the other restaurants on the block.

I went and visited Independence Grill on their second day of being open. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the NEW owner made sure to come and chat with our table. I had the Caramelized Onion Burger, which came with goat cheese. It was delicious! At first glance the portions seem small, but I think it is 100% a case of my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Frankly, portion sizes are so out of control at most places, that I really respect the portion size I received. The burger patty was clearly hand made and the BBQ sauce dipping sauce I request for my fries was lovely. I'm excited to see Independence Grill become a fixture in historic downtown Independence.

Great service. Had zucchini appetizer which was very good but needed more of a crunch. I would have given 4 stars if the bun on the burger was good. The flavor of the meat was good but the bun ruined it. It has a raw taste but falls apart. They need a good pub bun.

We've never had a bad experience here and it was the same the other morning for breakfast. Our server (Jenny) was great as usual. She's very attentive and pleasant. The food is great as well. I even heard the chef ask our server if we enjoyed our breakfast (chicken fried steak and eggs). That shows me the chef really cares. My only suggestion would be that the staff not congregate and have personal conversations that are within ear shot of the customers. Not that anything inappropriate was said, it was just a bit loud and distracting. We ate in the bar area which provided an unobstructed view of the kitchen. This would be nice if you could see the chefs cooking but you can't. You get the audio without the visual. Maybe swinging doors to the kitchen would be better here. These 2 issues are the only reasons I didn't give them 5 stars. I can't speak for lunch or dinner menu items as we've only had breakfast here. We'll be having dinner here soon.

Not a good experience at this restaurant. My expectations were high when we entered the restaurant, as it was very comfy and well decorated. However, I waited 20 minutes for a mixed drink and was just about to walk out of the restaurant when the waitress finally came with it. I saw two other parties come in and leave without ordering; one had been seated and not waited on, the other party never got seated and was waiting by the front until they gave up and left. The place was definitely not busy; maybe six tables seated, max. My chicken fettuccine alfredo was wonderfully flavored, but definitely not hot-which means it was cold about 5 minutes into the meal. The other person in my party had the New York strip. The steak was undercooked and not well trimmed. The potatoes were cold-not even a hint of being warm. Of the six tables I saw seated, three of them went to the bar to get their bill because the waitress was paying no attention to them and didn't bring it. This could be a wonderful restaurant, but was a sad disappointment.
