Middle Eastern bakery and deli in Gresham, hurrah! I go here with work folk for lunch and usually get the kibbeh, tasty, and some sort of pistachio miracle for dessert. They have an impressive display case of pastry, it's only slightly more delicious looking than the deli case. They have daily specials of various meat and salads. Family owned and operated. Check it out if you're in G-Town.

Wow! Simply incredible. When you arrive you are usually greeted by Selma, the owner or her husband, Nick or one of her sons. Their food is completely home made and delicious. Mediterranean food is so healthy for you too. Well, I am not too short about her huge dessert selection though. It is a cool place to hang out too. You have got to try this place out. When you leave you feel full and satisfied...not icky like when you eat junk food. You won't regret it. I guarantee it.

I LOVE this place. Love it. Selma and her whole family are very friendly and it is a very comfortable place to go....but the food is simply amazing. She makes everything from scratch and it's always so good. Her dessert window blows my mind! I always get macaroons, pita bread and biscotti to go. Try their sub sandwich and ask for tahini on it!

Tasty, authentic food. The owner was friendly and even gave us a free taste of one of the pastries. Great place to have a light lunch.

  • Gennie H.

We've eaten here, as well as bought their hummus and pita. Great authentic food that is fresh and delicious. The environment feels more like a cafeteria than a restaurant, so we usually get our meals to go then eat in the park.

Great and simple Mediterranean deli. Great staff, great prices and really good food! This is a must when in Gresham. Really wish they had a bike rack.

Wonderful food, great to grab before a small trip to the park. Selma's is family owned and very friendly.

Menu variety: Sandwiches such as falafel, gyro, subs and croissants, combo platters such as chicken and rice, mezza and humus. Salads options include greek and chicken caesar. Food taste: Wow! very delicious. Food quality is superb, you can tell they take their time into making their food done right. So many different options and dessert case is awesome. Service: Very professional and helpful answering questions. Price: Reasonable Wait Time: The handful of times I've been here, did not experience any wait time. Ambiance: This bakery and deli is very quaint. I came in here for the dessert and walked out also buying a few more items; bread, hummus, salad and the chicken platter. Bathrooms: Not sure if they had any, did not use. Their dessert menu is not listed on their online menu so you will have to experience this for yourself. I highly recommend making a trip out to this place, its well worth it. You will thank me later!

I really love the hummus here , especially the roasted pepper and garlic flavors. That and the baba ghanoush are what keep me coming back and taking my stuff to-go. My biggest problem is I don't exactly feel a warm welcome here. It is pretty much the same vibe each time I have been so I don't stick around.

Really good tasty food, Selma is so nice.

I have been in twice now and each meal has been good. I don't eat out much because unlike some people out there I truly am Gluten intolerant. I am very happy to say that this is one of only two places that I have found in Gresham that I have not had a reaction to the food from cross contamination. I will continue to come back but if you are like me stay away from the fresh pastries display case, it is very tempting.

This is my favorite place in all of Portland. The food is spectacular and the service is great. I have never had a bad experience.

The best spankopita ever!! They made to order our salads. Fresh pita bread and hummus. This place is a gem. The food is organic and all natural with no perservatives. They even grow their own grape leaves. Great Lunch spot!

Oh, everyone in Portland is always scorning Gresham. I know it's pretty meh, but there are some places trying really hard and you gotta give 'em cred. Selma's is one of the tasty family owned places a vegan can root out some lunch when you're in east county. They have great hummus, tabouleh, baba ganoush, arnabeet, sambousek, falafel, and dolmades, all vegan. They are also baking the sweet stuff and have vegan treats. Some stuff says vegan, but if you ask there's always tons more that's unmarked. Everybody is helpful and knows what's up, too.

  • Carlene W.

Eaten at Selma's many times and always been happy with the food and service. This is a great place to try Mediterranean food offerings - Selma, Nick or their sons are always available to explain what's what! This has been a local favorite of Gresham residents for years.

Great friendly service. My husband had a gyro and loved it. I had the chicken Parmesan wrap which was very yummy as well.

Selma's is a regular stop for me and my lovely wife. I haven't had anything that is less than wonderful. My regulars are the tabouli, a green bean dish, chicken and curry rice. But, the several kinds of humus are always wonderful... likely the best humus I've ever had. My kids love her desert case and swear by her baklava. I usually get a macaroon. The place is also very friendly. After saying "thank you Selma" and walking back to my office, I find myself thinking "this is how my grandmother would cook if my grandmother was Syrian." (my grand mother was an Scandinavian cook.)

Selma's Bakery brings some culinary diversity to Gresham. It is located in the heart of the downtown commercial district. There is a vast array of baked items, packaged snacks and beverages. Lots of seating is available in this establishment. I went here after having gone once before. The wedding cake cookie I had during my first visit had a little too much sugar powder on it, but it was mostly delicious. This time I had a Lebanese pastry which was again really complex, an interesting mix of meat and sauce, though it is not as easy as other bakery items to begin diving into. Prices are at par-level. I'll probably be back again. The beverages are expensive at being over two dollars for bottled soda, though the Lebanese pastry at four dollars was good since it included meat. Lots of their pastries are under two dollars. Try Selma's if you get the chance.

I'm in pure shock that anyone would give this place anything above 1 star. The worst Mediterranean food I ever ate. Nothing is fresh or made to order. They heat the dry food up in a microwave.... Even the pastries are so dry. Very confused why their reviews are so good. If you're looking for real Mediterranean food, Nicholas is a block away. Never coming here again!

After three visits, I'm ready to review this wonderful place. However, my reviews are only for take out food, not for eat in. My sons have therapy in downtown Gresham, and I like to walk the town while they're in therapy. After passing this place several times and reading their reviews, I decided to give a try. Three visits later, I am SO Pleased. Like other reviewers say, this place is VERY clean. It is spotless. Even their shelves displaying retail good are scrupulously clean. Another thing--the staff is so friendly. On one visit, I happened to come in to contact with a lady whom I'm assuming is the owner, and she was so pleasant and eager to explain every item I was interested in. My knowledge of Mediterranean cooking is limited, so I appreciated her availability. What have I tried? The Med salad, the tabbouleh, and the curried chicken and rice. WONDERFUL! All very flavorful and very fresh. The roasted cauli also looked great. Once i'm off my restricted diet, I'm going to dig into the spanikopita, the stuffed grape leaves, and the baklava. The great thing about offering dishes deli-style is that you can try a little bit so see if you like them.

Friendly knowledgeable staff, authentic food, and very tasty, have only had the bakery goods, but everything looked good

Selma's is a lovely place. I find myself craving the curry chicken, arnibeet (fried cauliflower), spanakopita and garlic humus at least every week. The food is always fresh. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.

These folks are very nice. Food is pretty good. Well priced but a bit overrated at 4.5 stars.

I posit were this in Portland there would be a line at the counter. But the eponymous effort of owner Selma Khoury and her family, this Middle Eastern food centric bakery and deli may be Gresham's best kept secret. Now that we've found Selma's, it will be a destination stop for my husband and me in future trips through Gresham. AUTHENTIC & FAMILY OWNED Selma has Syrian heritage which one might intuit from the Middle Eastern delights in both bakery and deli case as well as the small Syrian flags shown above the counter in this brightly lit, sparkling, welcoming space. The aroma of good food greets you as you walk in the door. So did, on our visit, a handsome guy behind the counter who I subsequently learned was one of Selma's sons. From him I learned his mom is involved in all the baking and cooking for the restaurant This is a true family effort with well earned pride of ownership. Those kinds of "mom and pop" businesses are not so much seen these days and they are delightful to discover. THE DRILL There are two sparkling glass cases at back of the store, one filled with bakery items and the other with deli items. There is also a menu for sandwiches and other to order food. Order at the counter, pay at the register. SEATING If you're eating in, you can take a seat at one of the many standard height (yahoo) tables with chairs in the light filled room that has lots of windows at the front of the store. More that is yahoo-worthy is that the tables have ample space between them. No "sardine can" tight seating here. EATS There are options for vegans, vegetarians, omnivores and dairy free and gluten free eaters. Middle Eastern options are the focal point for the food delights served here but there are other choices too. As example, cannoli in the refrigerated take away case and a curried chicken and rice in the deli case that might lean more Indian. This is a scratch kitchen, everything is cooked and baked in house, with Selma in charge. High quality ingredients are evident in the outcomes of both sweet and savory dishes. We bought some sweet treats to eat in and some to take away, and savory dishes to take home for dinner. Everything was delicious. In particular the Bird's Nest pastries, a traditional treat of sweetened pistachios in a sweet phllyo shell, which are one of my favorites and these are the best I've ever had. We also loved the date filled cookies and the fruitcake (seriously) with dates and walnuts. We selected jalapeno hummus and mamaghanoush (Selma's spicy version of eggplant spread babaghanoush) as well muhammra, a red bell pepper and walnut spread that his particularly cumin rich in this version, as well as tabbouleh and karnabeet (called arnibet here I think) which is fried cauliflower served with a bright lemony tahini sauce. There are also sandwich options available and we heard Selma makes felafel too, although we didn't try it on this visit. Next time. COFFEE What goes better with Middle Eastern sweet treats than coffee? (Maybe mint tea?) The coffee served here in the pump pot at the beverage station was nice and hot, so thumbs up for that, but a bit more subdued a brew than is my preference. Next time I'd opt for a Turkish coffee or an espresso beverage as they have both. THIS N THAT: 1) PARKING: On street and in a free lot that had ample open space across the street. Try finding ample and free parking in Portland near a great deli / bakery like this. Just sayin...this is worth the trip for that reason too. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in and throughout. Standard height seating. Ample floor space. 3) CATERING: They do it. 4) NEIGHBORS: Wells Fargo bank next door.

I've been going to Selma's since 2006 and I never get tired of it! I make a point of going a few times a month. It's a wonderful family owned and operated business that couldn't be more friendly or accommodating. I've tried all of the sandwiches/wraps and you can't go wrong! There pastries are delicious and I love getting my hummus from them! If you haven't tried Selma's you should definitely make the time to do so!

  • Sherria F.

Selma and her family offer top notch customer service, she makes the most excellent homemade food with the freshest ingredients. And her baked goods, well they are like no other with a ginormous selection to choose from. Absolutely recommend you stop by to try her mama ghanous she makes herself from scratch. Deliciousiosis!!!!

Hidden gem alert! This news flash brought to me by, non other than my Gram! My man and I were up for a visit with her a couple of weeks ago, and she was telling us about this fabu Syrian bakery up in Gresham. Apparently Gram even knows the bakery's namesake (Selma). I always forget what a drive it is to Gresham from S.W. Portland, but boy was it worth it! We could hardly contain ourselves: package after package of fresh-made pitas ("Real Middle Eastern, not that those silly Greek ones!" says Gram), dolmas, Turkish coffee (with cardamom!), olives, peppers, kibbi, hummus, spanikopita, unnamed (and new to us) items that were delightful....ah, great lunch/dinner spot for us. If you're in Gresham or just driving by, you should definitely stop. There's always room for a snack, especially when it's nice and healthy, served by friendly folks.

Another victory for Gresham. We went in here today because we wanted gyros, but didn't want to go all the way to Bonfire for their happy hour. We decided that we'd split a Selma's gyro instead, and it's a good thing we did, because their generous portions add up to the same you would get ordering two gyros from Bonfire (we still love Bonfire, but the gyros here are just a bit better in my humble opinion) with the same (or better) price. We also orderd the meat and potato pastry/pie and it was delicious. Meat pies aren't my cup of tea usually, but this was absolutely delicious. I wanted to get a taste of the one thing that makes my mind up for me at every mediterranean place- the hummus and pita. The hummus, absolutely delicous. The pita, fantastic. Breaking it down- The food here is amazing. The gyro is one of the best I've had anywhere, the pita is great, but I still prefer the pita from Nicholas, and the hummus is just a bit more flavorful than that of Nicholas. Do I prefer one over the other? I'd have to say that Nicholas would be my favorite Gresham date night for the pita and kebabs. But if we're looking for some fresh delicious items to take home for dinner (Selma's closes at 6pm) or wanting a delicious lunch, Selma's would be among our top choices. I cannot wait to go back. Upon coming into the building the first thought is "wow, it's extremely clean. Wow, look at those cakes in this case. Wow look at the pastries in THAT case! OMG, all of those salads and goods in that third case. Wow!"... The selection here is wonderful. Not just Gresham wonderful, either. The service is perfect as far as I'm concerned. I don't need somebody to roll out a red carpet. They're friendly, not overwhelming, polite, and so very generous. I'm super happy that we know about this place now

This spot is amazing! Can't believe I haven't been here sooner. They have home made everything- dishes to desserts!

I'll start off by saying that I REALLY wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, the negatives out weighed the positives. Food textures and temperatures were way off. This might have to do with the fact that I only saw and heard a microwave being used in the preparation of our food. Pita bread tasted like it was from Safeway, tabouli didn't taste fresh. All together the meal was very anticlimactic. I came to this place because of the great reviews it received on Yelp. For those who love this place, please take your critique else where. Cause evidently food isn't your forte.

Subpar experience. First, the lights were off except for a few dim lights in the kitchen - presumably to save electricity but it was kinda dark. I ordered a chicken and rice platter based on a yummy lookin photo someone uploaded, and after a long wait my plate finally came but it was a joke! Barely any shredded chicken and nope it wasn't hiding under the rice. The whole time there I heard excessive microwave door slams and dings - probably why the few shreds of chicken I had were crunchy on the ends. The lettuce in the included Greek salad was brown too. Then a lady checked on the table dining next to me, but never me. On the way out, a man held open the door for someone in a wheelchair leaving ahead of me, sending her on her way with pleasantries but looked at me and paused before saying "c'mon"?! Seems that they were nice to regulars but not newbies like me. At the time of typing this I'm on a nearby bench still hungry, irritated and yelping other places for more food. On the bright side my meal was a biz expense. I love supporting mom n pop type places but Selma's, "c'mon" you have to do wayyyyy better on multiple levels...

Awesome food. Nice staff. First time here, we looked a little confused and the staff offered a full menu and explanation. Very quaint but delicious!

  • Jas H.

Really good food. They have a good takeout section in the deli with prepared foods such as hummus, baba ganoush, spanikopita to name a few. Everything is always fresh and that's just the savory section! They have a great sweet section and bakery as well. Prices are good and the service is so friendly!

    (5)
  • Danielle H.

I typed in gyro in the search field on Yelp and this deli came up. So I went there and ordered my gyro. If you're craving a gyro do not go here because to my surprise it was just a wrap with the gyro meat in it and there was hardly any cucumber sauce on it which to me makes the gyro. The meat was like processed lunch meat made with lamb and beef. I was so so disappointed and I'm still craving a gyro. :(

  • Dimitri P.

I'm pretty sure the owners know what Turkish coffee is, but they aren't sharing this delicious treat with Gresham. I was served cardamon-flavored espresso. A bit watery for espresso too. I swear I'm not being nitpicky here. The preparation/final product of espresso and Turkish coffee are very different. Moving on, the desserts here are delicious. Many of the savory dishes like samboosik, spanakopita, pasta salads etc are little under seasoned and lack filling for the price. There wasn't a food menu, you've got a display case of goodies to peruse like a deli counter. They have combination platters according to other reviews. I ordered a la carte style to build a lunch, which ended up being pricey. Overall good, tasty pastries and very nice people running the place.

I've never written a yelp review but use it all the time. Selma's deserves my review! Very clean restaurant and friendly staff. They went above and beyond to accommodate my two kids. Gyros were fresh and tasty. Macaroon was perfectly moist. We tried the iced Turkish coffee which finished the meal off nicely. I highly recommend stopping by!

  • Katie H.

This is a hidden little gem. I stop in here regularly for fresh pita bread, hummus, and tabouli. My daughter loves the cookies and a samboosik for lunch. The hummus is some of the best I've ever tasted and people are always impressed by the quality of the bread and hummus. The business is family owned and the food organic and good quality. Great local business with even better food. Great place to take home food or baked good or for a light nutritious lunch.

Friendly place good food, had the falafel and gyro. Only thing, I would like dark green lettuce rather than ice burg.

Selma's has the best hummus platter with fresh vegetables in the Northwest. It is always served with a smile. The restaurant is a hidden gem in Gresham.

Not sure how I missed Selma's Bakery and Deli in Gresham all these years. I am so glad a friend told me about it. Their deli case is amazing--salads, hummus, meats, all ready to eat! Sandwiches of many kinds made-to-order: gyros, shwarma, etc. Create your own platter of meats, salads, etc....beautiful bakery items. There is plenty of room to sit and enjoy your meal. Beautiful! The prices were fair for the area and it was very clean and quiet. A nice place for lunch or take out.

I had the curry chicken platter, and added grape leaves and hummus. Everything was fresh and homemade, absolutely fabulous meal!

Seriously, this is by far the best food and service in the Gresham area..........

Some of the best Mediterranean pastries I've ever had. A surprising find in the Gresham food desert. The cream horns especially are worth the price.

Love the people, location, and the wonderfully fresh Syrian foods and baked goods!! Watch for her fantastic pumpkin chocolate chip cookies!!!

WOW!!!!! I would say this is some of the best cuisine I have ever tasted ANYWHERE! The variety, the desserts, I can't say enough! Be sure and finish with dessert and the Turkish coffee with cardamom!

  • Elena K.

Selma's is one of my favorite lunch spots in Gresham. The ingredients are always fresh and crisp - I love the veggie croissant with the pomegranate Italian soda. Dessert is always a challenge - so many fabulous choices, I end up taking a variety home for that midnight craving. They also sell some Mediterranean goodies like rosé water, grape leaves, and gluten free soaksay cookies. Plus the family running the place is the sweetest!

    (5)
  • Jonah K.

This deli is amazing! I leased an office space above Selma's for six months last year and made weekly (or more frequent) trips downstairs to stock up on pita, hummus, tabbouleh, dolmas and a wide assortment of amazing Mediterranean food. The place is truly one-of-a-kind; I haven't encountered any other like it anywhere, which is a shame, since I think it would be successful in any location. And I have yet to find a hummus that is smoother and fresher than the stuff from here -- just amazing. It's a family-run and family-owned establishment. Service is always friendly and fast.

    (5)
  • Barb A.

I absolutely LOVE Selma's! They are so warm and friendly every time I walk in. I am there so much they know me by name. There are sooo many things on the menu that are delicious! I haven't tasted one bad thing in there. If there is ever something that you'd like to sample, they always happily oblige and give a big one! Everything is made in house with the freshest of ingredients. Go check them out!

  • Marc K.

I tried Selma's based on their Yelp reviews. I have to admit, I was disappointed. Gyros was 7 bucks for a small roll full mostly of lettuce and super-thin tsatziki. Nothing like the Greek delis I grew up with around the Mid-West. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere is quite comfortable. The bakery portion of Selma's was pretty admittedly impressive. I like it more as a store than a restaurant. Rosewater rice pudding was just okay.

Selma's makes cakes too! I bought a bunch of items for a birthday party last month. I called her (the night before) and she had everything waiting for me when I got there in the morning. This woman is amazing, she grows her own grape leaves and her pita bread is perfect! You can eat there or they pack it to go (great for a little picnic in the summer weather) We always go back to Selma's, it's a great Greek option on the East side :)

  • Leo C.

I got there about 20 minutes before they closed, and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. Their selection is better than the menu suggests. They have several other dishes available deli style. And their desserts, WOW!!! All freshly made on site. I am asamed I have not found this place sooner. Go, enjoy Greshamites!!!

  • Lee W.

This place is very good. Big ups to Yelpers who got Selma's on the top of this list when you search Gresham. The guy working the counter was awesome. He was friendly, casual and very helpful; just what you hope for from your server when unfamiliar with a restaurant and it's cuisine. I did the out-of-towner thing and asked for a recommendation. He proceeded to give about six different recommendations and the ball was then dropped quite obviously in my court to make the decision. I floundered. Finally I decided to go with the chicken shawarma and had the pasta salad on the side. His other recommendations of samboosik, kibbi and the maza platter all sounded good and if I end up in G dot again I'll probably check one of them out. The wrap and salad both kicked ass, although the shawarma did skeet tahini all over my dress pants, which was quite uncool. The pasta salad was loaded with fresh veggies and just the right amount of tang. I finished the whole affair with a cannoli which was worth easily 3x more than the $1 they charge. Good food, very friendly staff and reasonable prices. Whether you are on business in Gresham or a local you won't regret a visit to Selma's. Just watch out for tahini skeet.

  • Bobby D.

This place has a lot of different choices of baked good and lunch items. I ordered a curry rice with chicken strips with almonds and a greek salad. All of the food they sell is made on site. They even have a few sugar free (made with maltitol) choices of baked goods. The service was great and the staff were all super friendly. I thought the food was good too especially the greek salad.

Great little place in Gresham. Great hummus, homemade pita ,baba ganoush and more. Finally, you don't have to travel far from home to eat Middleastern food if you live in Gresham!!!!

  • Steve R.

Great Food GREAT service - This deli shows what an old world family run business is capable of -- both the older & younger generations of the family seem to work there - imagine if YOU ran a bakery/deli - how would you like each customer interaction to go? THAT'S the kind of experience you get. first class. Kid friendly - bright, open, airy seating... LOTS of yummy, homemade foods from my childhood - Gyro was so tasty! - ( in a wrap form - no pita ) yummy yummy yummy! Baklava is exquisite. rather unassuming storefront might not get noticed by the average person - but if you're a foodie - in Gresham's historic downtown district - it's worth seeking out - * Thumbs up ! *

  • Jessica K.

Another good review for Selmas! My boyfriend and I love the samboosik, both spinach and chicken curry. You can really taste the homemade flavor and time spent making these delicious treats :) Their spanikopita is wonderful as well! As far as desserts go, their baklava with walnuts covered in chocolate is worth every penny. It's rich but not too sweet and has great texture to it. The service is great too! I need to visit more often...

This is our go to place for last minute pot luck stuff, They don't have a huge variety, but what they have is top notch. The staff is very friendly and accomodating and the prices are fair. Haven't delved into the pastries, but the almond merengues are delicious, even the sugar free ones!

  • Miss Josie H.

Selma's is a little bakery and deli in Gresham. I like it because it's clean, the people that work there are always very nice and the food is fantastic. If you're starving you can get a large, satisfying meal, and if you just need a snack you can pick up a little dessert or just have some pita bread and tabouleh. My personal favorite, is the samboosik. It's kind of the same idea as a hot pocket, but much better! If you're in Gresham, eat here.

    (5)
  • Laura A.

We love Selma's! Yummy food. Some of the best in downtown Gresham. They're a little pricey for a deli though, which is the only reason i wouldn't give them 5 stars.

  • Levi L.

Unbelievably good middle eastern food. Hummous, spicy chicken/rice dish, m'judra (sp?), pumpkin cookies, and wedding cake (thanks Selma!!) are all my favorites. I'm not usually a massive middle eastern food fan- but thanks to this place I legitimately like it now!!!

  • Bernadette A.

A great deli in downtown Gresham. I have gone here a few times and always leave satisfied. I usually get a Gyro and fresh pita bread to take home with me.

  • Shan H.

Selma was a friend of a friend when I met her, but she's become someone I look forward to seeing when I'm in the area. I lived in Gresham for a year and loved going to her little deli/bakery till I moved back to the Chicagoland area. Her family and herself worked the counters last time I was there. The garlic hummus is amazing! Everything there is! It's great for just a snack or a full out meal and it tastes just as good tomorrow :) Selma takes pride in her place and it shows. Definitely worth stopping by :)
