McCrae's is a nice family owned business. I have been eating there for almost 15 years. They have delicious food and very large portions. The service is speedy and the facility is kid friendly.

several other yelpers have already said everything i have to say about mccraes café... its a whole lotta real cheap food. BigP and i were looking for some saturday morning 'gut glue' aka biscuits and gravy. we pass this quaint little joint frequently and finally decided to pay them a visit. on the day we went the place was about half full and we were there very soon after opening. as a cook i take this as a good sign. i did not read the yelp reviews before dining so i was not sure what to expect. upon entering we were promptly greeted and seated, and coffee was poured and on the table before my jacket was off. we were presented menu's and browsed through them even though we were pretty sure we just wanted the b&g. the offerings were typical American breakfast diner-style fare at reasonable prices. while we waited for our waitress to take our order we noticed some of the plates arriving at other tables... whoa! the portions in this place are enormous! they boast of serving a 12 egg omlete on their sign but every plate we saw was just as huge as that omlette sounds. waitress returns (more (AWFUL!) coffee in hand) within 5 minutes of seating and we ordered. i am not even kidding when i say our food was on our table almost before we were done ordering it! as you can imagine the quality is not what you are buying here. quantity - yes. price - yes. quality food made with love, or at least a little care - no. both the biscuits and the gravy have to be out of a can. if it isn't, i would very much like to see their recipes for both. don't get me wrong now... it wasn't inedible, just boring, bland, cheap-tasting and slopped onto a plate by someone who doesn't give a damn what the food looks or tastes like. copious amounts of salt, pepper, and hot sauce got us going. we ate about half of our breakfast before deciding it just wasn't worth the time to finish it. our waitress didn't even ask if we wanted a to-go box (we didn't) as if she was used to throwing away insane amounts of food every day. it wasn't that that our visit was really awful (besides that coffee... ugh! and im NOT a coffee snob at all!!) it just wasn't anything worth going back for. i did notice some mammoth sized chicken fried steaks come out to a table next to ours that looked pretty darn good. maybe i'll try one someday. maybe. as a side note, as i said before i pass this place often and they usually have a full, or nearly-so, parking lot. that has to be an indicator that perhaps i was dining on an "off" day or maybe i am just WAY more picky than i previously thought...

As we pulled out of PDX enroute to Mt. Hood, I asked my companion, "Damn l could really go for some home-town farmer breakfast". Coming from a farming community, we were happy to find this on Yelp. I'm glad we did! The portions were *HUGE*, just like they serve back home. Gravy was excellent, and over all the food wasn't salty. Giving this 5-stars because they provided salsa with my eggs :)

Quantity does not equal Quality. Went here with my husband who is a giant breakfast fanatic, since the place was always packed. Meh. An omelet the size of your torso doesn't mean it tastes good. It was very bland, and the meat was sub par. The kid behind us got the hugest burger I've ever seen, he seemed pretty happy about it. We always said we'd come back to try a burger, but the boring omelet has kept us away.

Why pay for CRAPPY service? The short chick IS THE WORST SERVER IN GRESHAM! And on our LAST VISIT, our food came out 25 min. Later and wasn't even HOT! Room temp at best, so we Bolted after yelling some expletives and paying for our cocoa and soda, which they should of compt us. So even after screwing up and not being accountable for forgetting to put our order in, they will still ask you to pay for your drinks!!! Total douch of a place. Save your money and stY home... Or better yet, go to Mc Donald's.

Quality is not what you pay for here. You pay for quantity: gut-busting, "Good-Old-Boy-American" super-quantity made with cheap, low quality ingredients. If eating a 12 egg omelete at a divvy greasy-spoon diner is your idea of "going out for breakfast" then boy oh boy, different strokes for different folks, I guess. If you like quantity over quality, then hey, McCrae's Country Café is probably the greatest restaurant you can find because the quantity you get is ridiculous. I mean who in their right mind would want to eat a 12 egg omelet? You would have to not care about your health whatsoever. Even the "half order" (6 egg omelet) is just too much food (and cholesterol) for a single human being. It's 'Merica at its finest. No wonder this country is so overweight and wasteful. A textbook glimpse into American conspicuous consumption. I came here because it was 6:00 in the morning, I work nearby, I dropped my wife off at the airport and wanted to get some breakfast to kill some time before going to work. I spent $16 on a bland, low quality sausage and cheese omelete (half-order, six-egg), a small orange juice that tasted horrible- definitely came out of one of those sticky juice dispensers you see in cafeterias, and a tip for the waitress. The omelet was basically a pound of cheap, ground sausage with a Kraft single melted on top and then wrapped in a thin egg blanket. But I hate wasting food, so I ate the whole thing, along with most of the greasy-wet slab of hashbrowns next to it. I ate it... ...And then regretted it immediately. My regret wasn't just gastronomical but financial as well. If I'm going to eat a lousy, low quality breakfast I'll just go hit the dollar menu at McDonalds or Jack-n-the-Box. I was mad at myself for not just stopping at McDonalds for a couple breakfast burritos. I would've done the same damage to my self-esteem and body but for $2 instead of $16. There are two reasons I didn't give McCrae's one star. 1. The waitress was very, very, very nice. I would hate to see, however, how much food she has to scrape off plates on any given day. 2. I get it. I really do. I grew up in a small country town in rural Illinois and the restaurants I went to during my youth were exactly like McCrae's. HUGE, farm-boy portions of cheap, low quality food that tastes bland and usually benefits from the addition of salt and pepper and/or ketchup to make it taste a little better. I know that this sort of food appeals to some (if not lots) of people. So just because I do not seek out restaurants like this, I know there are people out there who hate me for writing this review because they love McCrae's and think it wonderful. To each their own.

The food is pretty good but the prices might be just a tad too much. Waiter was somewhat impatient , not just with us but at other tables too... and it was not like we were slow or trying to chat him up or anything. I understand they are busy but feel like it was a little brisk. May or may not be back but I don't think it will effect them too much as they seem to stay really busy lol.

It's just a lot of food and prices to match. Nothing small. But ok food. Didn't eat the take home portions.not my favorite.

Sweet Jesus of all things holy this place has crazy huge portions! If you're going....it is wise to take someone with you. Or perhaps a few for that matter. Each portion is enough for at least 2 people unless you are just THAT hungry. I've been here a couple times and the food is always mediocre at best. The chicken fajita omelet is decent as is the chicken fried steak. The philly cheese steak was OK. The service overall is ok as well. I only come here once in a while but everyone seems to be friendly. Come hungry.

  • Cassy W.

The portions are huge and the food is mediocre. I was at first impressed with their service until I had a problem. We went for Mother's Day brunch and their till was broken, she ran my card for $41 when my check was $14. She was nice and apologized and did a refund. I checked my bank account a few times and the refund didn't go through yet. We went in again the next weekend and same thing, had a great meal. When I brought up the problem with the weekend before, she refused to do anything without seeing proof from the bank. I was willing to show her but then she told me it was my banks problem and she wouldn't even look into it unless I returned later because she was too busy. I was appalled by the way she was treating me for her own mistake last week. Needless to say, I will never be returning or recommending to anyone.

Okay, so I was lured in by the promise of stellar chicken fried steak (CFS), and I was NOT disappointed! Fair warning: a half portion is easily enough food for two adults!! Great breading, not greasy, an it doesn't fall apart when you cut into it- someone knows what they're doing in the kitchen! Fast and friendly service, special requests accepted happily (what can I say, I like my eggs a little overdone). A pleasant experience, I would go back! Extra bonus: clean water, it didn't have the greasy spoon funk taste in the water typically found at other breakfast joints (you know who you are!).

I am a fan of McCrae's, but not necessarily for the food. The coffee is weak and God-awful. As many have mentioned, the food portions are enormous, but so are the prices for what you get. I get the gimmick of offering a 12-egg omelet, but is it necessary? Another gripe is that you have to specify cheddar when ordering an omelet or else you'll get American, which is so-so on a burger but to me a no-no on just about anything else. What makes me a fan of McCrae's is the service. The restaurant is family-owned and their commitment to the restaurant and its customers is immediately obvious. No matter how long it's been since we've dined there, my family and I are greated with a sincere greeting and a smile of recognition. We'll be back. Now, about that coffee...

  • Justin E.

This has become our sunday tradition. The food is ok, but the portions are so huge. It is very traditional stick to your ribs. The small omlette has 6 eggs! Beware the country fried steak is on a plate all by itself. Service is super fast and the food is cheap.

This place is worth driving across town for. Amazing American breakfast food with truly American portions. This is the kind of place you take a German exchange student to show them why Americans are fatter than Europeans. Then tell them they won't be far behind because the food is so damn good there is no going back to plain old small portion snitzel after. Their last two stars are for one spectacular item on their menu. The chicken fried steak. Made by them every morning. Get there early because if you show up near the end of breakfast they are likely to say "sorry sold out on that one." I would call their full order of Chicken Fried Steak the "Three Man Job" because one or two are going to have a tough time finishing it. I'm a HUGE eater and I'm not kidding. Three man job! Amazing!!! I wish I had more time to comment but one of the best down home breakfast joints you will ever find. Pancakes are amazing too. As this can easily be done poorly. Just to comment on other posts in the thread on McCrae's. There omelets kick ass but its a shame if that's what you order given their meat product awesomeness. If an omelet is done poorly I blame the people who ordered it. Its standard American fare so if you want something that tastes different than eggs and cheese you better order accordingly. Hence why their menu says "Eggs Made to Order" on it.

The food here is typical diner fare, huge portions, and we especially like their pancakes. They're flavorful and not overly rich. One word of caution. Three separate occasions when the fellow at the register added up our tab he has overcharged us. Once, by over $10. Total your bill beforehand and be prepared in case they try to overcharge you. Otherwise, good place.

ALWAYS GOOD FOOD! If you're looking for down to earth comfort food that is yum and comes in large portions without breaking the bank, then this is it. I like they're steaks, omelettes, and especially their one pound burgers! The owners and employees are always courteous and friendly. I love bringing my family around.

Our family comes to McCrae's anywhere from 2-3 times a year since we've lived out in East County. It's not a place we go to for exceptional or noteworthy food. We come here for a straightforward diner experience on a Sunday morning knowing we can pay for one plate and share it between 2-3 people at more than a reasonable price. The service has always been very friendly and fast; our coffee never seems to run out. We are never rushed to leave despite being provided the ticket upon delivery of the food. I normally keep it simple with over medium eggs, hash browns and bacon or one of the scrambles/omelets split with my husband. Again, the food is basic and not particularly noteworthy but consistent and will do the job for typical breakfast fare. We will continue our leisurely returns, as McCrae's offers that "small town" diner comfort that is reminiscent of my hometown.

This is a little delicious gem in downtown gresham. The food is excellent! The service is top notch! One of my favorite places to have breakfast. I highly recommend it.

I had heard about this place on The Food Channel and wanted to go. Finally went about a week ago and it was everything it was cracked up to be! The portions were MASSIVE and delicious! We had a 5 year old with us and he ate EVERYTHING! We ate there twice and I plan on going back the next time we're in Portland.

Try it! I LOVE this place! Giant breakfasts. enormous burgers, great service. They have it all. My only wish is that they were open a little later.

Great big portions. Reasonable prices and very friendly service! A go to place for breakfast. Haven't ever ordered any food other than breakfast, but I'm sure is delicious as well.

  • D C.

Huge portions, great service, can get busy at times but the staff is on it. Probably a good thing they aren't open for dinner or we'll be there more often. 12 egg omelet what else can you ask for? Oh yeah a huge chicken fried steak. All of a sudden I'm hungry again.

Quantity over Quality seldom ever dominates a foodies mind. I came into McCrae's this morning after our church service to have breakfast and kill some time before our baby shower this particular afternoon. This place has crossed my mind many of times cause I drive by it quite frequently but I also have seen a few of my facebook friends post about this place so I wanted to give it a try. My fiance has been here before and boasts about how large the portions are. She was hesitant about going here as we would have a lot of food at the baby shower so she decided on something light there. We came in and the wait was not long at all considering how packed the place was. We sat down and got our menus and as I was perusing through the fare some pretty typical of most greasy spoon restaurants. I ordered the chicken fajita omelet and my fiance orders the french toast with strawberry topping. The wait wasn't long and our server constantly came back and checked on us regularly. Our food arrives and I was ready to dig in. On my first initial bite I found the chicken to be precut portioned and artificially grilled chicken breast. The veggies were fresh and overall idea was good but the execution of it was horrible. The biscuit was horrible. It was more like a dinner roll as opposed to being an actual biscuit. There was nothing very exciting about the meal itself. Even the hash browns came out of a bag. My fiances french toast was pretty basic and just topped with strawberry filling once again something that came out of a jar. Overall, I was not impressed. Like everyone else says, If you want gigantic portions and care less about the quality this is your place. Hate to say it but I don't believe I'll be back again. Not that the service was bad because it wasn't. The food just doesn't do it for me.

The food is terrible and the service is even worse. We got the bill before we even got our food!

I was introduced to McCrae's when I started dating my boyfriend. I've been here numerous times. I really like the family atmosphere. We usually go now with my boyfriend and his mom, and I usually get a hot cocoa each time. The people there know us so well that they will already bring me a hot cocoa, him a diet coke, and his mom tea after we walk in. And we don't come into the restaurant once a week or anything, we could wait three months and come in and they will still know us! To me this is where you go when you want something like Shari's, I've only really had breakfast here, I think I once had a burger, but it was very large and I didn't like it. I usually get the something from the light eaters menu. I've recently moved to Tigard so this is going to be something that I miss. We usually have a Christmas Eve breakfast here, so I'll probably be there. Usually don't have too much of a problem when we bring our big group in here, however it definitely can get busy.

  • Lacey D.

It is so sad that people think this place serves actual food. It is garbage food. Everything is from a can, carton or package. This is not home cooking, it's a sodium infused prepackaged nightmare excuse of a restaurant. If you are looking for chicken fried steak the size of your torso, or a massive 12 egg omelet, both of which taste just like salt and grease, then you should go here. If you would like to be served a decent breakfast drive one more minute and go to Truffle Hunter. Seriously.

    (1)
  • Samantha S.

Mmmmmmm!!!! Definitely my FAVORITE breakfast place!! My boyfriend and I go every Sunday. They have my favorite strawberry french toast, HUGE delicious omelets (seriously, I usually finish Half of the Half order), and the BISCUITS AND GRAVY are a must. I've been trying the same things at other restaurants, and nothing beats McCrae's. I gave up on biscuits and gravy elsewhere because McCrae's set the standard so high. :) YUMMMmm.

  • Katie P.

I've been to this restaurant twice before and have had pretty good experiences both times. My third experience had not been that great. I had looked up some of the reviews on here and noticed a lot of people mentioning "quantity over quality" and either having a great experience or just a bad one. People coming in after us were helped first and were served first. The portions are decent, but the quality of the food seemed just to be okay. I felt that I was rushed to order and the waiter helping my boyfriend and I was not speaking clearly in the least and rushed me through my entire order. We had to flag him down again to finish my order since he did not give me much chance to say the entire thing. I didn't end up giving the normal 15-20% tip I normally give because quite honestly he did nothing except bring us our order (incomplete order & had to bring the rest later without apologizing). It doesn't look like I'll be coming back.

  • Kaity K.

Ordered chicken fried steak, it came out and was freezer burnt and tasted very old. Told me they wouldn't charge me for the steak and what do you know, it was on the bill anyway.. Will NEVER go back again.

    (1)
  • Shryl-Seth S.

Had eggs, hash browns and biscuit. The eggs were ok, the hash browns tasted like a freezer and the biscuit was not edible. The biscuit was soft on the top, moist on the bottom and 1000 degrees inside. What restaurant microwaves a biscuit??? This place has no heart.

Great stuff! Thank you. Friendly people good food and clean area. Chicken Freud steak will certainly take care of your hunger pains

  • Jeff H.

My girlfriend and I have been to this location a number of times. It's a spacious building with two different seating areas. Each time we arrive, we are promptly seated and offered large jugs of ice water. My breakfast of choice is always the chicken fried steak. It's huge, comes with eggs, toast, and hash browns, and the gravy is thick, but delicious. Service is always good here, the food is always good here, and the quantity is great. I suppose one could be a hipster snob and dislike everything because it's not organic and can't be traced back to the farm of origin, but that's your own call. Me, if I want a breakfast that is nowhere near healthy, and I want to spend time with friends in an open, warm, airy place, I can think of worse places than McCrae's.

  • Amber S.

Always love the food here everything always tastes great sometimes there's a wait but it's a very popular spot so it comes w the territory. Best French toast and huge slices of bacon!

    (5)
  • Angela W.

I love this place! It does get pretty busy on the weekends, but it's worth the wait. We always get great service and food here. The omelettes are crazy big (6 eggs for the 1/2 order) and they are always full of plenty of fixings. They have some of the best French toast around, if not the best. I would highly recommend going here.

  • Kaylie B.

I absolutely LOVE coming to breakfast here. The portion are unbelievable! The gal that is there is so nice and manages the business excellently. I will most definately be back and bring my family from outta town to also enjoy that which is McCreas.

  • Kimberly S.

Food & service top notch. Very community involved owners they regularly support the Sandy High football team even though their own kids have graduated. The $ is pretty spendy, the portions are however huge. Chicken fried steak is the best in all the land. I don't go as often as I would like because taking the family is a bit spendy but I still love and support this family owned business.

    (5)
  • Dylan K.

Country fried steak's out again, and fijita omelet's out too man not my day. To Don, they have orders coming in every Thursday if you are there on Wednesday odds are you are not getting country fried steak or chicken fijita omelette^^

The service is really friendly here and the food taste great!! The prices are good as well. My friends showed me this place and now I show my friends and family from out of town and every persons I have brought here love it!

  • Jason H.

Great little spot for breakfast! Very reasonably priced and the quantities are more than enough. You know you're going to leave full when all the people leaving the restaurant are carrying to-go boxes. Clean, cheap, roomy...all the earmarks of a great little local breakfast joint.

    (4)
  • G D.

I've only ever been here for breakfast on a weekend morning. The options and quality is that of a standard diner. This is a destination of choice for hangover crowds. Nothing like some classic greasy breakfast food to fix a headache. Extremely friendly staff. The atmosphere here isn't our thing. I would never wait to eat here. It is basic but a beloved Gresham local favorite.

    (3)
  • Larry B.

I go here a lot. While the food is Hugh Portions and ok and the Service is great , their omelets are always overcooked. I usually get Biscuit and gravy and that is good. I do find their Prices to be overpriced . Love the Staff and the company but it is just Ok on Food

    (3)
  • Andrea B.

Huge portions, you get seated quickly, and its very homey :) If you get coffee they'll offer you more every give minutes. The waiters/waitresses are very on top of things!

Either this place or Elmers but they are both tied for the BEST breakfast place in Gresham. They have a 12 egg omlette definetly worth trying it is giant. But they have delicious pancakes n waffles they never go wrong with the bacon. But the best part of this place is that it is so homey.

Great place to go eat never leave this place empty got to try this place if u have not had it..or if u live in the Gresham area...

  • Diva A.

This is a frequent breakfast place I go to with family, we have been going periodically for over three years. We have never had a problem with the staff, and I can safely say you get practically what you pay for. This place is definitely for the budget type of people, it's a ton of food for a relatively small price. I have tried many of the items and some are lacking while others are absolutely delicious. I have yet to know someone who didn't enjoy the mushroom cream soup, and there are incredibly delicious items on the menu like the strawberry french toast and the ruben. However, I admit I am not a fan of their eggs, as I think it's either a very cheap brand or it's liquid, and their hash browns need quite a bit of salt to get tasting right. Food is a hit or a miss, but the portions, price, and taste can be extremely fantastic. It took a while to find the things I really love on the menu, so I don't recommend coming to this place only once if you don't find anything you like.

  • B L.

I've eaten here quite a few times. I took my father recently after boasting about the portions. I always get an omelette of some sort, which is great. My father ordered the pork chop breakfast, oh my what a dried up piece of leather, he had to tear it apart by hand. Still trying to convince him to go back for the omelettes.

    (3)
  • Lisa T.

Hungry? Portions are big! U won't leave hungry! Prices aren't so bad. Service is Great and when it's busy they at least apologize for the wait. Very friendly. I always come when I can. Note: don't expect fancy settings or people in fancy clothes. Ain't that type of place.

Good pancakes, terrible eggs. Nice staff and they don't rush you - a good place for a leisurely breakfast.

WORST service ever. Went on Saturday morning, sat down and waited nearly 20 min for someone to take our order. It was getting busy and they paid no attention to who arrived when. The table next to us showed up after us and were eating before they came! We ended up walking out. Skip it....for sure.
