I was told to stop here by a local on my way to the John Day fossil beds. I'm really glad I listened! Friendly attentive service with a homey feel made the locally sourced burger taste even better! Finished off with a slice of strawberry pie and went on my way more than satisfied. If you're passing through Dayville the time to enjoy this cafe, you won't be disappointed.
Wished we'd made it in time for breakfast, missed it by 15 minutes:(, but what we ended up getting was quite delish! I had a Reuben, which could have been a little less greasy, but full of yummy corned beef! Husband had some kind of crazy burger and our son had the corn dog kids meal, which includes a drink and ice cream! We were fueled up for our day of adventure at the Sheep Rock unit of the John Day Fossil Beds, just down the road. It's the only restaurant for miles, so make sure you don't show up on a Monday or Tuesday:) Only three stars because I had actually called them and asked what days they were open and was told they were open every day. So, we show up on Tuesday, starving, and had to drive 20 miles back to John Day to eat and do that part of our trip the next day. (This was before the hours and days were listed here on Yelp.)
I think this is the best food for many (100?) miles around, with friendly service and very reasonable prices. We came for an early lunch and were both delighted with what we ordered: I had soup and salad with the daily special chorizo and lentil soup, which was delicious, and a garden salad which was fresh and huge. Added a side of potato salad which was also great but the soup and salad would have been enough! My husband had a chicken sandwich and fries, the fries especially were hand cute and delicious. Everything was home made and yet still menu prices were inexpensive. Very impressed!
