Yeah, I know: a diner on Highway 97, on the road halfway between Klamath Falls and ... no idea where. But we drove into Chemult midday feeling very hungry and saw the sign that said "Best Food on Hwy. 97." Even if they were wrong -- and we're in no position to know for sure -- out stop was a good decision. It's a family operation on the side of the busy road, and everything is cooked to order. The French fries, a throwaway item most places, were hand cut and cooked hot and fresh, in a word, crunchy delicious. So was the club sandwich with thick slices of ham and hot, just-cooked thick bacon slices. Big-city folks anywhere would enjoy this! The three-meat chili was terrific, piping hot and spicy with sliced onions and cheese on top. We didn't order sweet rolls, but we heard someone else in the diner say they were the best anywhere around. That's all. We didn't stay long and we didn't try other menu items. The experience was a good one -- friendly service, too -- and we'd call this absolutely the best part of our trip on Highway 97 for sure.
