I had the Huachulpa Pescado ixtapa, which is supposed to be red snapper. Tonight it was halibut cheeks, because, the chef explained, His shipment of snapper was not up to his standards. The dish was divine. The halibut was buttery and flavorful, and the fresh fruit and avocado complemented the flavors beautifully. The entree was carefully prepared with great attention to the balance of flavors. The black beans were tasty. The salsa had a pleasant kick. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was charming- I sat outside and when it got chilly there was a blanket to wrap around my shoulders. The price was reasonable, given the location and the fresh high quality ingredients. Service was prompt, warm and friendly, and the food came pretty quickly. I highly recommend this place and I will be back!

Took dad for his birthday, 4 people $220+tip, sure is proud of his food! Yes we had drinks, but 2 pitchers of weak margaritas are NOT worth $110! The "seafood" is cheap whitefish and tastes as such, even though the menu implies crab, shrimp and scallops, I didn't find any in my flauta, or relleno. I will not be back whether I was the one paying or not. I could get better from a portland food cart for a quarter of the price, and on top of that, who refuses customers their patio on a summer night when it's stifling inside?

Came here for dinner yesterday with a few friends and this place was a let down. Everything here is pricey and they want to charge you $5 to split a plate?! Lol! Food is very bland and salty and the quality is not fresh at all. Wouldn't recommend this place as there are tons of restaurants in Bend.

The food here is always amazing. The highest quality food in town with a great atmosphere. We spend all our anniversaries there.

I'm amazed at the number of good to great restaurants in Bend, OR. This one is in the GREAT category. Some of the best Mexican cuisine we've had in oh-so-long. Pricey???, yeah maybe a little but we'd rather pay a little more to have a meal we can talk about (in a good way) for a while. When in Bend, don't miss Baltarzar's.

When you rate something on yelp 5 stars it says "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" and that is exactly what Baltazar's is... As good as it gets! My go to is the Camarones El Pescador! Which is prawns wrapped in BACON!! Baltzar's margaritas are amazing too. If you haven't tried it you are missing out!

Our office manager chose this restaurant for our, very small, office Christmas dinner. I was ambivalent at first. I'd heard that the food was good but that the owner was condescending and rude. I was prepared to be disappointed. I wasn't. The man (possibly the owner?) who seated us and took our drink orders was kind and helpful, even jovial at times. There was a fun group at the bar having after work drinks and chatting. They weren't too loud but were having a good time and enjoying the atmosphere. The most unanticipated part of this dinner was that the food is Mexican! There is a large fish on the outside of the restaurant and no indication, that I saw, that this was anything other than a seafood restaurant. Perhaps I'm a bit unworldly, but Balthazars doesn't sound Mexican to me... Anyway, I had the Plato...something yummy with a trio of different seafood concoctions. All of which were good. The only part that wasn't extraordinary was the tamale. It had a very thick "crust" and a couple of teaspoons of filling in the whole thing. I left the masa and ate the filling, which was very good. I had a large margarita, which was definitely LARGE and delicious. A friend had the Ahi which was, blessedly, not overcooked. They forgot the prawns in my husbands meal, but rectified it immediately when he mentioned it. Everyone enjoyed their food and drinks and I'll be back to sample something else another time!

Very disappointed in the menu pricing on the internet vs what is actually at the restaurant. Approximately 70% higher at the restaurant! Food was good. We had prawns, steak, chicken fajitas. $70 for fajitas was too much!! Had signature grand marguerites for $11 per the menu but on the bill they charged $12! Accordingly we gave an inferior tip. Diner beware if you look at menu online. Go to La Rosa or Hola for good Mexican and reasonable pricing.

Really disappointed. My significant other and I had came here during summer and had a fabulous experience - the food, drinks, and service were all on point! Flash forward to Valentine's Day, they were much busier than usual. Our server seemed rushed and spoke to the both of us maybe twice. We ordered the lobster enchiladas and a dish with red snapper. The lobster enchiladas had water running throughout the plate, wet and soggy is not my kind of enchilada. The red snapper was VERY fishy - not fresh. Our plates were removed before we were finished, as if we were being rushed out. Very disappointed. Especially at the price we paid.

One of the most welcoming and friendly restaurant owners we've ever met. Baltazar is unparalleled. It is of utmost importance to him, to serve the best Mexican seafood in Central Oregon, with consistency. He offers the highest quality Mexican dining experience in town. I would love to hear of any Mexican restaurant in town that can serve better Fajitas Mixtas with giant scallops, fresh fish, and shrimp that we've enjoyed on a weekly basis. Great margaritas and love the quiet atmosphere!! This is without a doubt one of our favorite Bend restaurants! S & M

Heard the food was awesome, but we would say it was "good" at best, certainly didn't blow our minds... B+. Service was a bit bizarre/dry/unfriendly... D-. Two of many examples of the bizarre service - which brought us as many or more chuckles as it did frustration, but hey, it was still odd: 1.) Over the phone, a few days before our reservation, I was assured the kitchen could work with a soy allergy, no problem. I think it was the third time (in about 45 minutes) we asked our server if I could eat the tortillas, he responded to our table, "haven't checked yet, you know, I do have other tables to wait on besides yours." The fourth time I asked, after he brought the food out (the food I didn't know if I could even eat?) he said, come with me, and waved me up to follow him to the kitchen. He asked me to reap the tortilla wrapper myself because he didn't bring his glasses to work and couldn't read the ingredients on anything. Odd move, eh? So no other servers, cooks, etc. literate? 2.) The four of us were at a small square table -- after ordering drinks and an app, beyond the chips & salsa that start on the table, we had very little room -- and we knocked over half a beer. We cleaned it up on our own, but asked a passing server if she could fill up our half-spilt beer by-any-chance... she said probably, but she'd need to check with out server first. Funny. Anyway, our server came back, muttered something quick while filling up the now empty glass with beer -- at the end of the night turns out that was an extra $6 beer. Would have been nice to know.

I've been to Baltazar's many times, and the food and service is always incredible. I ordered a seafood fajita last time I went, and there was enough food to last me for three days! One of the best seafood places in town.

Incredible Mexican food! Best I've ever had. Baltazar is so friendly, helpful, and accommodating! A very child friendly place and even took time to hold and play with our 7 month old. A must visit while in Bend! You will not be disappointed. Get the jumbo Margarita and Carne Asada with Prawns on the side. Incredible!

I'm not in the mood for seafood very often, but when I am, Baltazar's is a good choice. Pros: The food is quite good and there are many different choices on the menu. The owner is so friendly! We love seeing him when we visit. Cons: They are fairly understaffed and the food can take a while to get out. And the cocktails are not well balanced, you can barely taste the alcohol.

Balthazar's Mexican Seafood Restaurant came as something of a surprise to me. I usually do not stereotype stuff, but I am not a fan of Mexican food in the US. Now Mexican food in Mexico is awesome, with lots of fresh fruits and veges, and easy on the salt and fat and meat. Here in the US it is usually different, with lower quality ingredients and a lot of salt and fat and assorted nastiness. Balthazar's is high end, and the menu is outstanding over all. Everything is immaculate, the service is outstanding, and the food is amazing. Sure, they have all the standard Mexican fare, but it is of an entirely different level of quality. The seafood is fresh, the shrimps are huge, and flavors exquisite. Their beans are some of the best I have ever had. Highly recommended.

We ate here for the first time recently and I don't know why I waited so long. Baltazar's is a Mexican Seafood Restaurant and we didn't quite know what to expect. We started with prawns for an appetizer and they were huge and delicious. I also had bacon wrapped shrimp added to my meal and they were heavenly. Everything we ordered was excellent and they were happy to oblige substitutions to make everything perfect. We will definitely be going there more often in the future!

Sat down and was a little unnerved by the expensive menu prices. And then I had the food. Immediately I found myself in the Elysian Fields. Just me and a blissful sensation of fresh seafood caressing me ever so tenderly. I melted into my chair and forgot about the world for what seemed like an eternity. The best Mexican food I've ever had, possibly the best food I've ever had. I can never go back to my former life of mediocre Mexican cuisine.

  • Jimmy H.

Hands down the best Mexican/Seafood I've ever experienced!!! The service, the margaritas, the FRESH food!!! All of the meat and fish are perfectly cooked, all the vegetables are fresh and delicious. Had a group shared appetizers, tasters and group dishes. Large variety and I'd give literally everything I ate a 10/10!! Nothing too greasy or too oily. You will pay for this standard of food, but if you appreciate good quality food you will melt in here!!!!

  • Haley H.

Absolutely amazing, Very fresh an delicious! Don't come here expecting the typical oily or buttery fajitas at those other Mexican restaurants, this is REAL Mexican cuisine.I see comments on people complaining about prices, but you get what you pay for! Baltazars fresh margarita to die for! I can't even pick a favorite dish, I loved all of them that I have tried. I can go on and on but I will stop!

Terrific random choice for dinner! Walked in without knowing what kind of food we would be eating. What we ate was wonderful Mexican seafood! The ceviche was great! My friend's crab enchilada was delicious! Sangria was perfect...not too sweet and not too much wine! Yum! It was a little expensive but worth it, in my opinion.

  • LC M.

Food was really good: fresh good ingredients, but presentation on placemat sized platters was just too much. Prices also seemed really high... $29 for an entree, wow! The margaritas are very tasty. The downer for the evening was observing the waiter argue with patrons from another table about something that wasn't right with the order. Seems like Baltazar could do better!

    (3)
  • Nicole S.

Overpriced, underwhelming flavors and the wine glasses were thick as doorknobs. The seafood was fresh, however. I got the Acapulco burrito and it was "ok" but definitely not worth $25 for a flour wrapped entree. No wine menu to boot. Service was satisfactory and the silverware was pretty nifty (fish silverware). All in all, I would not return.

  • Kayanna S.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! My husband and I went there on multiple friends' recommendations. They were not kidding! Hands down the best Mexican food we've eaten, mind you, we are huge food snobs! I consider myself a very good cook, so most restaurants are a let down, leaving me wishing I would have just cooked at home. However, If it were not for having 5 children, I would never attempt Mexican food again and only eat there! And Balthazar is a super sweet guy, very friendly, very attentive! I opened a yelp account purely to recommend this food!

I have reviewed about 25 restaurants in Bend. I can say by far this is in my top 3. I have never been to a place in Bend that has fresher seafood, friendlier staff and better ingredients. We have been to the restaurant about 5 times now. Every time was with my family and in a group of 5 including my 2yr old who also loves the place. The menu is vast and he can seriously make anything up you want. The prawn are no joke and are the largest and freshest I have seen. One of my favorite places to eat as a kid was Azteca in Seattle. They can actually make my favorite dish, the Pollo Fundido spot on and it's not even on the menu. I have had something different each time we have gone and been blown away every time. The infusion of Mexican/seafood is the best in Bend for sure. I highly recommend giving this place a try. Others complained about high prices. Fresh seafood is expensive and do you really want to go somewhere with "Cheap" seafood? You will not be disappointed.

Some friends introduced us to this amazing Resturant . The food was so tasty. We had their crab leg special with a combo of carne asada. Also we had them grill prawns which were huge and had them in soft flour tortillas . Service was excellent and they were extremely friendly. We'll definitely return and share our experience with others! Great place to enjoy fresh fish in Mexican style dishes!

Every time we eat here it just gets better and better. Baltazar is the owner..no not the chef. But his chef is very very good at what he prepares. The portions are large but every bite a treat. The atmosphere is calming and fresh. This is a small place but comfy. Service is always above par. the place is clean and inviting. I love that he uses utensils that are not out of the dollar store. When a buss boy clears the table you do not here the clinking of these nice heavy utensil and plates. The staff is trained...yes what a nice change. I have not eaten dinner here as yet we go in for lunch mostly. Prices are very fair.Food as I said is very good.Service also very good. A must try.

Baltazar's is always one of the 1st places we recommend to our many out of town visitors. It may appear to be strictly seafood at first but it's a great all around Mexican restaurant and that's saying alot since I'm originally from Arizona and have had some great Mexican in the 30 years I spent there! My wife always gets the halibut fajitas and I'm a big fan of the chicken mole enchiladas and the fajitas. The salsa is great as well! Great wait service always filling the water, asking if we need anything etc. We do dress up sometimes when we plan ahead but also have gone in flip-flops and half wet swim trunks fresh from playing in the cascade lakes and didn't feel like we stuck out, after all, we live in an outdoor paradise here! May not be the best place for kids and service is probably slow when there's an event in town but just about every restaurant in Bend has SLOW service period. Try waiting an hour and a half for a table for 2 at the "social table" at "10 Barrel" down the street and you'll know what I mean :-)

We had a large group in celebration of a birthday, and were all pleased with the meal choices and the food that was served, and servings were generous! The service was not exceptional, but they tried. One thing that made us turn our smiles upside down was the fact that they do not allow more than one ticket per table. With 13 people at our table, we spent nearly 45 minutes straightening out our bill. The wait staff didn't remember who got which drink, appetizer and meal, so several of us had to help him. I'll go back, but will never suggest this place with a large group, unless they amend their policy on large groups.

You can experience the Mexican coast in Bend, OR. Wonderful seafood dishes expertly prepared. You can first taste the food with your eyes, then your nose, and finally in and through the mouth. Gotta go back when in Bend.

We had read all of the great reviews so we thought we would try it out. I ordered the Tampico Trio and after 45 min (there were only 3 other families in the restaurant) it finally came. The waiter cautioned me on the hot plate and when I took a bite of each item they were all cold! Each bite of the seafood releno (I only took 3 bites)had a distinct taste of mold When the waiter picked up our plates and asked how our meal was I told him, he just patted me on the back and said sorry....$85.00 bucks later!!! needless to say that will be our first and last visit to Baltazar's

The end of an old year and the beginning of a new one seems like a pretty good time for fresh starts. On New Year's eve, as I write this update to my previous review, I do it with hopes that that the attitudinal things that made me previously downgrade the four star ambiance, service and food to only a three star place are changing for the better. I heard from one of the team at the restaurant in response to my previous review, a person who had been on prem the day the "final straw" incident occured that I spoke of in my review. The staff member acknowledged the accuracy of my sumary of the incident, apologized and said things are changing there for the better. I've heard the same from folks who've decided to go back and give Baltazar's another try. People can change and if that's so for Baltazar's owner and managing the temper that led him to lash out at customers, then we'd give the food, service and ambiance four big stars. (Speaking of ambiance, Kevan O did a very good job of capturing the interior in his photo.) Honestly, we probably won't be back but it's worth a shout on on Yelp that the tide may be changed in the right direction. And, if you go, be sure to treat yourself to some of the incredible mole that is made by Baltazar's mom.

I had dinner at Baltazar's last night and what I really love is that the taste, service and flavor is still superior. It remains one of my favorite places to go in Bend. Sometimes finding great seafood in the high desert is problematic, but Baltazar's never disappoints! From the amazing prawns to the seafood enchiladas - it is all very good.

This is an interesting Mexican restaurant. You'd never know it was Mexican upon entering it; the colors are more like Starbucks instead of the usual over-the-top colors and graphics which you see usually. In fact, the most colorful thing we saw was the tri-color chips served with two salsas (one red, and one green) served with the menus when we arrived. Along with the subtle colors there were lots of metal sea sculptures, which is fitting since their specialty is Mexican flavored seafood. Since the friends we were with knew the owner, the service was attentive and friendly. After a round of margaritas for all (the grande was $11, a bit more than I usually have paid), we all had some sort of seafood. The Acapulco burrito was huge! Stuffed with delicious seafood, is was presented on a large plate with rice and beans. My wife had one of the camarone dishes, the one with th huge prawns and with mushrooms. Equally very good. I guess for the price however, I expected a lot more. For this type cuisine, which is pretty basic (rice and beans as sides!) this is at the very top. Not even white tablecloths!

6 of us had dinner there last night and all 6 of us ordered something different. We all loved our selections. The service was great and the owner helped as well. He has a great sense of humor and appears to take great pride in his restaurant. I had the plata cancun and the scallops were huge as well as the prawns. The sauce was to die for. If I were to offer any complaint at all it would be that the food was so good I ate too much! Highly recommend!

Mexican - fancy cuisine with a Mexican flare Margaritas - a basic one is $9 Massive - size of food and drink servings Masculine - decor with dark chocolate walls and metal sculptures Marlin - look for it on the sign to locate the restaurant Mature - the clientele... children are discouraged Money - there was a little bit of sticker shock, esp. on the cocktail menu Mediocre - my rating I picked this spot for date night with my husband while in Bend. On the face of it, a great choice since the food was delicious, they serve a stiff margarita, warm chips and two types of spicy salsa came immediately and service was excellent throughout. The owner even greeted us warmly when we entered and said goodbye as we left. So why only the A-OK rating you ask? I felt like we took a wrong turn in Bend and ended up in a swanky country club dining room. Our reservation was at 7:00p, but we were the only couple under 40 in the entire place for awhile. But, as my husband said, "At least they are gray hairs and not blue." He's a glass-half-full kinda guy. Food and drink portions were enormous, with food served on round platters, not mere plates. The margaritas were expensive, but you only needed one so I suppose it evened out a bit in the end. They specialize in seafood and I choose a trio of enchiladas (lobster, crab and shrimp) and the lobster was a standout. My husband chose a mixed seafood fajita plate with prawns, halibut and scallops. Even the food was oversized; I've never seen mushrooms or prawns that large. One problem is that all entrees are served with black beans and rice. Now, I know many people that would prefer pinto beans or some other choice, so it is odd that they aren't offered. This is a place that ultimately wasn't my style while in Bend, but I am sure it would suit many others, probably my parents. After all, they belong to a country club.

Another Acapulco Burrito and it was excellent. Somewhat upsetting that the showed a bottle price and glass price of a merlot but waiter said the don't like to sell it by the glass - then take the 'glass' price off the wine list. Service was adequate.

Best in class. Only drawback it you will leave stuffed, happy drunk, and feeling very satisfied you spent well and enjoyed a lot. Summer outdoor seating is great.

This is a great place. The food is good. They start out with tri-color tortilla chips and some fresh salsa. Baltazar calls me "amiga" even though he doesn't really know who I am. My husband always orders a side of guacamole--which is practically a meal in itself. We've ordered several things on the menu and haven't had any bad experiences. If you don't like super-fresh seafood try the carne asada. Plus, I really like it that people don't bring their kids here.

This is the second time I have dined at Baltazar's while visiting Bend and will continue to make a point to go back. As mentioned, the quality of the food and generosity of the drinks is great. The dining room leans more toward masculine than feminine but that's fine for me, simple, clean. I'm in my early 30's and didn't feel out of place but I also detest dining at restaurants with screaming kids (well, just kids in general). Take them somewhere they want to go like Red Robin or the like not where adults are trying to have a nice dinner. Okay, I am off my kid soapbox now. This isn't typical Bend but that's fine. There are enough places in town where I can drink beer with the locals while staring at exposed wood rafter ceilings and hearing about how good the snowboarding was on the mountain. I will say that I am a bit of a Mexican food nut, it's my default when thinking of where to dine out. That said, Baltazar's is familiar but different and a nice change to the standard Mexican joints.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
