Tanya’s European Deli Menu

This deli store has a great assortment of meats from Eastern Europe,,some time the food items can be a little old or not fresh, so you have to always be careful, once I bought some smoked food items here but then when I got home I could see they had gone bad, it is difficult to see if they are fresh or not, since they do not have any expiration date, so you have to just go with your gut, if you are lucky, then they food is fine and they have a great variety of it. It is a very clean place but the service is very unfriendly and they can be even rude, I have come here in the weekend, and not only was I not greeted as I got in, but the the few store employees were talking with each other and did not bother to stop in order to come and help me. But the fresh bread and the pastries are delicious.

I have walked by Tanya's European Deli many times over the years as I pass back and forth from TJ Maxx. I'm not sure why I haven't gone in and perhaps I should have paid attention to that little voice in my head. Perhaps it was the high expectations I had for the place because of the word "European" in the store title. I don't know what it was, but I wished I had paid attention to that little voice. At first, I thought maybe it was a store devoted to coffee and tea because several aisles are devoted to those two things. There are a lot of choices, but while I don't read Russian, the packaging for the tea and coffee just didn't shout "high quality." Things changed as I made my way from aisle to aisle, but it was uncomfortable to go in too deep to look at things because the aisles are narrow and the shelves over-stuffed with items. I felt like I might knock things over, sort of the "bull in the china shop" effect. About halfway through the shop, everything opens up around the deli counter, but again the deli cases were so stuffed with different meats and products that it made me uncomfortable about wanting to order a sandwich. The truly interesting items were the preserved fish and whole smoked fish. These are things dear to the Scandinavian heart of my father, and these items actually looked high quality enough that I would purchase some for him. The baked goods looked dry and listless and almost past their pull date. They are not baked on the premises, but baked and packaged elsewhere in Portland. Perhaps it would be better to seek out where these items are baked and purchased them there. While I was looking around the deli cases, I watched the young lady who was fixing the sandwiches and cashiering. She hardly spoke, never smiled, and did not look anybody in the eye, not to speak of a word of thanks. I don't think anybody has ever told her that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. There's a dairy case in the back that did not inspire confidence in me. Sad. One feels this store is a diamond in the rough. It just needs the polish from the proper person to make it into the sparkler it might be.

I've bought packaged goods here before, like tea and the like. But, yeah...stay away from the baked goods. I brought home a slice of chocolate cake covered in ganache and a slice of tirimisu. The cake was MOLDY on the inside and the tirimisu was stale and tasted horrible. I'm going to attempt to get my money back tomorrow.

We just discovered this place when we parked our car to go to TJMaxx. We 've come to this shopping center many many times to go to Marinpolis, etc. and this was the first time we noticed this place even existed. OK I know a tiny bit of Russian and couldn't help going in when I unexpectedly saw a poster or two written in Russian on the store window. It was interesting inside, though we didn't get to stay very long since we were in a hurry. They also carry the same bread (Russian rye) Uwajimaya carries ($2.99 a loaf and I like it much better than the bread regular supermarkets carries for the same or more price) so is a nice alternative when we're in the neighborhood.

For the true Soviet era experience this place can't be beat. Moldy bread and cakes, outdated meats that they cleverly peel the "use by" dates from. Bad Russian TV shows... oh wait they didn't have many TV's in the bad old days. The woman who works there is very attractive... but she yaks forever with the customers. I wish there were more choices.. but sometimes ya gotta have that Eastern European stuff... and waiting forever for really outdated and stale foods brings a nostalgic tear to my eye.

I have been looking for an Eastern European supermarket near where I live and was delighted to stumble across Tanya's Deli! The selection is much better than I've seen in stores of similar size and well represented the sorts of things I found in supermarkets in Russia and Ukraine when I lived there (including sprats from Latvia!). The service was unfortunately fairly standard former USSR (rude), but not unexpected given the context. I'd definitely recommend Tanya's Deli to people looking for food from the former USSR and Central Europe!

Some ingredients for Eastern European food are very hard to find. I went to nearly every market in Portland I could find! Tanya's finally carried the items I was looking for. I give 3 stars because some of the products seemed dated, and it was very difficult to get help from staff. However, if you really need Eastern European ingredients, come here. I am keeping it on my radar, and hoping they start to use fresher product.

Please Read! This deli is a hidden gem! Let me start off by saying that the deli is only operated by one person so you must be patient. There is a huge selection of tea, coffee, pickled and dessert items available. There is also a great selection of imported meats, fish and beer to try. If you are thinking of stopping by you must try a fresh handmade deli sandwich along with a Baltika beer. You can't get a taster sandwich anywhere for the price. My fiancée was born in Ukraine and says the food tastes like home. So whether you are European or want to be adventuresome, give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Nice selection of European snacks. However, check the expiration dates on everything. I bought some beers and some of them were 6 months past expiration. It was very disappointing considering the beers were $3 each! Also the customer service is slow, and unless you are Russian you can't get your deli meat sliced, she will only offer to cut you a chunk of cheese or meet. This place could be great if Tanya actually cared about her business.

Decent stuff, meh service. The sandwiches are where it's at, you couldn't even buy all the meat they put in there for the same price. They have a nice counter selection and some pastries that really remind me of the ones my mom would buy from the Russian bakeries of my early childhood. So, what that means is they taste like cardboard...but for me it's a big nostalgia thing. The napoleon is my favorite out of all of them. The prices here aren't the best out of all the Eastern European stores around town, and the service is weak. No, bad service isn't a part of Russian culture, as I've heard someone hilariously enthuse to their friend in the parking lot here. There are tables in the store but the few times I've eaten in there I have gotten the side eye like I should eat and get out. You have to be aggressive about ordering something behind the counter, because they don't even offer to help you or, really, make eye contact at all. Tanya is Ukrainian and a lot of the goods here are focused in that area of the CIS. If you're also from that area they have a ton of Ukrainian-language and Russian-language zines, mostly about celebrity gossip entertainment and some of them free, along with an okay selection of DVDs. They do have some Baltic goodies I haven't seen in every other store. Other than that, though, this little place is basically a crutch for when you can't make it across the river.

This place has been here for 7 years, and I have no idea how I have just now found it and patronized their establishment. 100's of rare imported meats and cheeses from mostly eastern European and west asian(Russian) countries. As well as dry goods, candies, wines and sundries. Owners are Uzbekistani, or at least the only person working was. I got a sandwich from a menu which had some great selections for under $6. The meat was delish, and generous, but I must have miscommunicated that I wanted lettuce and onions, because it was literally 1.5 inches of amazingly thin sliced cured meats, 2 nice slabs of cheese, mustard, mayo, and a few tomatoes. It was great, but a little on the gut-bomby side of things. It would have been amazing with a little less meat and a little more veggies. Will go back for more armed with my experience and a keen sense of what I want. Great place for a good selection of meats you would not be able to find at even Whole Foods, Zupans, etc.

For those of us on the West side dying for our East European goods, this place fills the bill. While not quite as homey as say, Good Neighbor on 82nd, it has a creditable sausage section, acceptable dairy selections, Baltika beer and kvas, frozen pelmeni, and my favorite: the stacks and stacks of canned/dried goods that you can't easily find except in a place like this. Nice selection of candies from Poland, Ukraine and Russia in the bins....liquor-filled ones are the best, IMHO, although I am partial to the Alenka krem brule. Nice additions are foods from the Caucasus, some local breads from Ararat, and an ice cream case (Dreyer's from Oakland, but who's complaining?) Service is variable, depends upon who's working that day. A few Russian words will get you a smile, though. When I can't make it to the east side, this is my "go-to" place for tvorog and ryazhenka, and that yummy Estonska kolbasa that I just can't seem to stop eating.....

Interesting selection of gourmet and European packaged foods. Full meat and cheese deli. However, the woman (and perhaps owner) could not have cared less about us and was more concerned about her phone call. We walked out without ordering and won't be back. First impressions are so important and she blew it!

Pretty cool little place, me and my girlfriend always like to check out different markets and this place is a little hidden european deli which seemed very interesting, they had all kinds of crazy stuff I'm not used to seeing, the pastry and meat selection alone are pretty amazing, smoked fish and all kinds of pickled goodies, oh yeah I found those chocolates with the alcohol in them, awesome, I can admit that some people might not like the "service" but if you ask they deliver, they don't say anything until you are ready, we looked around for a bit and found some good meat that we were interested in, had it all sliced up too, the lady is pretty quiet but I have no problem with that, she took care of what we needed and I had to pry my girlfriend out of there before she drained my bank account on multiple goodies we didn't really need............. we'll be back, very cool neighborhood place, very close to home for us
