Every time we come to Shawnee, we have lunch here. They have the best "blue plate specials"! If you enjoy pie for dessert, they have a big selection of homemade pies.

They now accept cards. This family-owned restaurant has been serving generations of families in the Pottawatomie County for 35+ years. Employees from banks, the, courthouse and legions of lawyers, students, merchants have sat at the booths and counter and chose Benton's because they were fast. BEST PIES IN TOWN. Best catfish and chicken fried steak. Yes, the atmosphere isn't fancy or even updated, but I come for the food and to visit with my dinner companions, not be wowed by the decor.

Just about anything on the lunch menu is good. Their fried chicken is a standout though. A little pricey for the surroundings, but there's not a lot to compare it to in Shawnee! What you DO want to get--if nothing else--is their pie. Any kind of pie. They're all homemade and fantastic. Even sugar free selections. Mm, pie.

Benton's Cafe has been somewhat of an "institution" in Shawnee for more than 40 years. It offers blue plate specials, burgers and other items. The inside is the only redeeming quality of the restaurant. It still looks like something out of the 60s, complete with (unworking) original mini jukeboxes at each table. That is about the only thing quaint or interesting about this restaurant. The food is atrocious. Often, it arrives within a minute or two (not even kidding!) after you place your order - definitely showing that it is not made fresh to order. The cheapest foods are used in its preparation and it is bland and just plain bad. I have eaten here many times over the years and have always been disappointed. I'm sure you will be too. For some reason people have given this "institution" status in Shawnee and recommend it. See for yourself but don't say that I didn't warn you.

Excellent food, Would be 5 star but for the dated atmosphere. Great diner type food. Best pies in the Southwest!! Try the coconut pie!

2 words: HOMEMADE PIES. Good service and hash browns nice and crisp. Turn of century building with 60-70s decor. Clean bathrooms. Beautiful neon sign too. I'll definitely return! Note: cash only.

Benton's Cafe is the kind of place that, one imagines, has stayed the same since it opened umpteen years ago. They have daily specials, still have a "Diet Plate" that features cottage cheese and a tomato slice, and a bajillion kinds of pie. The best thing is asking the waitresses what kind of pie they have that day ... they have them all memorized!
