You can't judge a book by its cover. Don't be fooled, Smokin' BBQ sits on the corner of Main & 5th, easy to spot, and for some reason, easy to pass up. This restaurant brings the authentic Texas-style slow hickory smoked BBQ to the streets of Dayton, and all of their sides and sauces are homemade! If you are the Oregon District late on the weekend, they are open until 4 am. Check it out!

Phenomenal Texas style smoked BBQ. The chilimac is something out of fantasy. Best sweat tea in town as well. Hmmm ribs XD

Food good. Service good. Bad: eating at the spot, why using styrofoam plates and cups and plastic silverware? And well, something I would never understand about BBQ in the US, amazing meat and the crappiest bread you can ever find, but that's a common thing in all the country. What's this baguette fobia that Americans have because the crunchiness hurts their baby pallets? Pussies... XD

I come here for the smoked hamburgers, which have a great smoky flavor and softer than normal texture. They're amazing! However, the sides are a little bland and a little overpriced.

Great service, food, and price! Went looking for dinner and Uno was closed. Actually kinda glad they were. Had they been open we never would have tried this place. The outside doesn't say anything about the meal. Please give this place a try!

this year I stopped in and had baby back ribs, green beans and Mac n cheese along with the wonderfully steeped sweet tea. Very moist ribs and fast friendly service. Great Dinner. Seating is stools and counter type diner.

Outstanding! Real Texas barbecue in Dayton Ohio! I've had a lot of brisket and this was excellent. Obviously slowly smoked for a long time to make it tender. Served with a little bit of sauce but not overpowering the meat on a nice bun with some kettle chips on the side. Excellent lunch for 10 bucks. Can't beat it. I'll go back here at the next time I'm in Dayton fo' sho'.

Best BBQ!! Chopped brisket sandwich with chips and coleslaw. Lots of meat, great price...check it out

A block from Crowne Plaza found some great BbQ. Unsuspecting building on the corner but don't let the site fool you. The brisket was tender and not overcooked. They serve kettle chips w most plates which are good but a bit greasy for me. Wife loved em!

So good! I love a good pulled pork plate with the greens (only comparable to the greens in the south. Oh yea, and the banana pudding.....wow; just like my little sister makes

First time there BLEW me away, will definitely be back! I had a smoked cheeseburger with their smoked bacon...it changed my life, amazing flavor and a HUGE burger, the bacon was the bomb.com , blows regular burgers out of the water. Rib ends where also delish with their tasty sauce. Nothing was dry and nothing was overly smoking tasting. It was just right, a cozy little spot I can't wait to go back to!

Definitely a must-visit if you love bbq and "hole-in-the-wall" type places. My boyfriend and I both loved it -- I thought the pulled pork stole the show and he ranked the brisket (which was INCREDIBLY tender) in first place. Great mac and cheese and cornbread muffins too! We will absolutely be back, and honestly this place might just fuel a visit :)

Saw this little place and wondered about it. Spoke to others and they said it was good. Decided to try so I checked out their menu online. Went with the brisket sandwich. Online menu said $7.99 for the sandwich. I ordered the sandwich only and the guy at the register asked if I wanted pickles or chips. I assumed they were included since I ordered the sandwich only. When all was said and done my bill was $10.98. I guess the guy had wrung it up as a dinner since I chose to substitute slaw instead of the chips. Wish he would have told me that. The brisket was super moist. Sauce was nothing to brag about. They say the sides are made fresh in house but I doubt the slaw was...seemed like store bought. The place really isn't clean like some reviews say. The register guy seems to be the owner and was much too interested in conversation with other guests than to pay any serious attention to me while he was handling my order. Also, when I got back to the office to eat it they gave me a chopped sandwich when I had ordered a sliced one. Maybe if the owner had been paying better attention to my order they might have gotten it right. You only have one chance to make a good first impression. Way overpriced for what you get...one small sandwich and a side of slaw for $10.98. See no need to go back, I've had better BBQ and at better prices.

This place is adorable and the BBQ is amazing!!!! I prefer the spicy sauce and really appreciated that they packaged my bread separately from my pulled pork in the to-go box soggy sandwiches are weird and I appreciate the consideration of the staff! Also the sides are soooo good and you can get a giant meal with an awesome sandwich along with to sides for about $9!

BBQ that tastes great even late, wow it sounds like a wendy's commercial or something equally comical. The fact of the mater is that Smokin has some damn good food. On Fridays and Saturdays they are open till 4am which makes it awesome to go to when you need a quick bite to eat. The sweat tea is awesome, tastes better then pretty much anything else you can find in Dayton. There is a small dining room, but even if the place is packed you can get food quick to go or for eat in. For the sandwiches expect to pay about 6-8 bucks depending on your meat, which is served dry and comes with sides of sauces to suit your wants. and a side of homemade potato chips ( which taste awesome dipped in the sweet sauce) Portion size is adequate, but nothing to big either. Meals which come with two sides run 8-10. Drinks are all the refills you want, make sure you take some of the sweat tea with you to go

Try the smoked burger. Incredible! Great little dive.

Have been here several times now and the place never disappoints. Some good menu items I haven't seen at many other que joints: smoked bologna (wonderful), chili mac (very tasty), and the smoked burgers (also very tasty). I greatly enjoy the vibe. Just grab a seat at the counter, order a sweet tea and commence shoveling some good BBQ in your face. How could this not be a wonderful thing?!

Holy smokes, is this place good! I went to an art show around the corner and happened upon this BBQ joint and was so happy that we went in and had some late dinner. It really reminds me of living in the South. With only countertop bar seating, you get really up close and personal with the 1-2 employees working hard in a steamy open kitchen. Seriously, it was so hot in there and it was 30 outside. I got a chopped chicken sandwich and banana pudding - both were perfect. The sauce was sweet with a little sass to it. It was just super comfort food. I do not enjoy going to Dayton, but I am seriously thinking about going up again soon just to eat here.

Meat is smoked then wrapped in plastic. Once ordered, meat is tossed in a microwave oven to be reheated. Chewy, overdone, dried out. The greens are awesome and chips are decent. Much better BBQ elsewhere in the Dayton area.

This place kicks ass! Texas BBQ in Dayton? Hell yes! I lived in Texas for a year and my family is Tex-Mex and my friend from El Paso, Texas brought me here. The owner lived in Texas a long time and does all his smoking (including burgers) in house. He also makes up his own BBQ sauces. Now, the sandwiches come with a side of home-made potato chips and the meals come with traditional BBQ sides (I ordered greens and mashed potatoes and my friend ordered the navy beans and mac n cheese). The unsweetened tea was great. The smoked burger was something different. I really liked it a whole lot. I also tried the sliced briskit which was excellent ("best in Ohio" as the Tejana girl who works there put it). A great find with great food. They cater and offter a lot of options.

By far the best BBQ in the Dayton area. First off, don't be expecting a super fancy restaurant, because this is not that kind of place - it's pretty bare bones, but it's all about simple good barbeque. The owner is from Texas and is super friendly. The beef brisket is in another league compared to other BBQ joints in Dayton, like City Barbeque or Oink-a-doodle-moo. The chopped brisket is as good as it gets, and the sliced brisket is so tender it's good enough to eat without any sauce. If you buy the dinner (2 side dishes) they give you enough meat for 2 heaping sandwiches, even though you only have 1 bun. They make their mashed potatoes from scratch using red potatoes and are totally delish. Like other people have said on here, the sweet tea is also a must get. They pretty much smoke anything here, from hamburgers to tilapia (for Lent). It's a favorite for people who frequent the Oregon District on the weekends since it's open until 4 am on the weekends. This is one BBQ joint that more people in Dayton need to discover!

Had my first "smoked" hamburger here. Loved it! Also, they make great chips. Finally, I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant where they make you feel so welcomed.

Recipe for quick and easy BBQ dinner in Dayton, OH: - 1/2 lb of Smokin' pulled pork - 1/2 lb of Smokin' chopped brisket - 1 side greens Pay $12 for all items. Alternate between the pork and brisket, dipping the meat either the Spicy or Mustard sauce before each bite. Swallow one of fork full of greens every two minutes to cleanse the pallet. Repeat until meat is gone. Enjoy thoroughly. Serves one.

Great food, Great service, Very clean place, Food portion is just right, Banana pudding reminds of me what my sister sometimes makes when I get to see her. A friend and I had pull pork, smoked ham, green beans, collard greens, corn bread and banana pudding. I am already ready to go back for more.....matter of fact, I think I will just do that.

Let me preface this review by saying that we just moved here from Northern Virginia a week ago, and this was our first venture to a non-chain restaurant in the area. We were drawn to this place based on the reviews and our hankering for some really good barbeque (which is something Northern VA severely lacked). I was taken aback by the outside of the establishment. Really a hole in the wall type of place on a corner in downtown Dayton. I wasn't even sure we could eat in because it looked so small. The parking area is proportionately small too, but luckily it wasn't too busy when we went. Upon entering, I was even more shell shocked. (Again, coming from Northern Virginia where everything looks shiny, pretty, and in order, even if it's not). The interior was very basic; barstools along two seating areas - one right at the kitchen, and the other at the window looking out into the street. We were greeted immediately upon entering and we explained it was our first time there and they welcomed us to have a seat and asked what we'd like to drink. I read that the sweet tea here was amazing, so we went with that, and WOW was it good. Definitely up to par with my southern standards. :) I went with the pulled pork sandwich, and my husband got the beef brisket dinner. Mine was juicy, flavorful, and downright delicious. I pretty much inhaled my sandwich because it was so good, and it had been so long since I had really good barbeque. The homemade potato chips that came with mine were quite good, very unique. My husband enjoyed his brisket dinner plate and the sides he chose (macaroni salad and potato salad). As a previous reviewer stated the service was lightning fast. We maybe waited 3 minutes between the time we ordered and when our food was brought to us. There was only one other family in there at the time. The main reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that they don't have free refills. And they don't tell you that anywhere in the menu; so basically you suck down that palate quenching sweet tea unknowingly and have to pay another $1.75 for a refill. Space is really tight in there as I mentioned before - we had our baby in the car seat and since it wasn't too crowded we didn't have an issue, but I'm not sure how a stroller or wheelchair would do inside. However, they do have some picnic tables outside too. As far as the food goes though, it was delicious! They have an extensive menu to include meatloaf sandwiches and dinners, smoked bologna, tilapia, and chili! Since I had such a tasty experience with the pulled pork, that will probably be my go-to meal in future visits. :)

After a really nice chat with the owner about how great the food is (to be - I have never before eaten here) I got a pulled chicken sandwich that bit back at me when I dug in at home. Rubbery, tough chunks of chicken that should never have been sold, especially during the dinner hour. The kettle chips were good, the mashed potatoes average. If other menu items are as good as claimed to be then perhaps the pulled chicken should get dropped from the menu. Very disappointing.

  • Tim L.

Went with 2 buds. We got a smoked hamburger (like a turkey burger, otherwise nondescript), Ribs (oversauced & chewy), Rib tips (waaaaaaay oversauced, mostly fat, what little meat there was was tough and partly unchewable) and chicken wings (tough, chewy skin, mostly flavorless). Even the pickles disappointed- soggy and lifeless. Good potato chips though. PS- we went at 5 on a Saturday. A local told us after that that's not when to go.

    (1)
  • Tom S.

Yeah, I've had better. Ordered the rib tips, which I love in a fav rib joint in Chicago. I have not been able to find another decent place and I will have to keep looking. The ribs tips were inconsistent within the same meal; that is, some were very tender, some were tough, some were grainy like it there was too much tenderizer. Probably won't order that again. But, I'd be willing to give them a second change for an excellent brisket some time in the future. Maybe then I can upgrade the rating. Caio.

From the outside, not so exciting. Seating inside, again not so much. Of the several places I've tried BBQ in Dayton, this place stands out for their food. I've had the pulled pork, baked beans, and mac-n-cheese a few times and have never been disappointed. The pulled pork is lean and tender. If you order a pulled pork plate (with the sides), you can ask for an extra bun and easily split the meal. Well priced. Definitely a great local Dayton BBQ place.

Every time I go to Dayton I eat here. Every time. Staff is very nice, food is awesome. I can't make up my mind if i like the brisket or pulled pork more. The sweet tea is also great. Late hours are also a huge plus. Only down side is the dining room is small (diner style) and gets cramped easily.

  • Michael M.

Wow! Let me start off by saying this place is so underrated. Yea not much to look at and very small, but the BBQ chicken sandwich might've been one of the top sandwiches that I've ever had. A must for anyone who is anywhere near the Oregon District!

  • Charles R.

I am not a BBQ expert, but the two meals I had here were very good. I had the smoked burger both times. It was honestly one of the best burgers I have ever had in my life. I ordered it plain and I think vegetables, cheese, etc. would have just masked the delicious flavor of the meat. I can only assume that everything else on the menu is just as good. The sandwiches come with home-made chips, which were a little salty but still a good accompaniment for the burger. The price for the burger (and everything else on the menu) was ridiculously low. I think the burger was four dollars or something like that. For such high quality food, this price is a steal. The only problem with this place is the size of the restaurant; there are only fifteen or so seats inside, and two picnic tables outside. There was no choice but to take the food and eat it elsewhere. Regardless of how crowded it can get, this place is a must-visit if you are in the downtown Dayton area. It is a short walk from the convention center and the food is terrific. I highly recommend it.

Okay I'm going to be objective here I'm not well-rounded when he comes to barbecue so I might be off base a little. Let me start by saying when I walked in it was a cute clean little diner friendly service with great big smiles which was warm and engaging. I have the ribs, perhaps it was the cut of the ribs but there seem to be very small bones in it and a lot of of what I guess to be cartilage and I spent a lot of time pulling it apart the bright side was the sauce on it was delicious, decides to me weren't very good bread potatoes but they were kind of cold and coleslaw that was just kind of average keep in mind it had snowed most the day and it was late at night so I don't want to be too hard on them from the time I got there till leaving there was a steady line of customers ordering takeout so I'm talking this up to just one slightly subpar meal in the sea of delicious barbecue. I would definitely go back and tried again. It's between a three and a four I don't like to write things extremely low unless it's really that bad taking into consideration great service is hard to find although should be expected I have to boost them up before hopefully next time the food will make it a solid four.

I grabbed some carry-out the other day from here for a late lunch. I like the style of the place, a small stand-alone building on a corner that looks like an old-time diner on the inside with chrome and leather stools and red counters to eat at. The service was friendly and it didn't take long to get my food. The item that I really wanted to try was the smoked burger. I had seen it advertised previously on the outside of the building when I had driven past and had been wanting to try it. On their menu it claimed that were known for their brisket so I decided to try that too. Since I was splitting the meal with my wife I got the double burger which turned out to be huge. I would recommend the single for an individual since there is no way that a person could possibly fit the double in their mouth for a bite. The single burger is only $5 and while it does cost extra for lettuce, tomato and cheese I find the price quite reasonable for the size of the burger. The double was so big that me and my wife just took the burger apart and each ate one patty. It had a great smoky flavor which I have not found in a burger before. I really liked it and it satisfied my curiosity and taste buds. The only thing is that the burger was a little dry but that didn't really take away from me enjoying it; I would still eat it again. You can add BBQ sauce to it if you want since he will offer you sauce when you order it. The sliced brisket was also real tasty but also a bit dry. But once again flavor was great and it was still delicious and sauce can be added, but in my opinion the sauce doesn't taste as good as the brisket itself. I was given both sweet and spicy sauce and to be honest could not tell much difference between the two. The spicy sauce was definitely not spicy. I also didn't find the sauce to be that tasty and honestly thought that both meats were better and tastier without the sauce. If I could have, I probably would have given them 3.5 stars; I went back and forth between 3 and 4. I like the place and would get food here again, maybe I will try their ribs in the future. They have all your standard BBQ meats and sides on the menu. I will eat their burger again because I don't know where else I can get a smoked burger and I really liked the flavor.

I woke up last night extremely hungry and couldn't go back to sleep because the stomach beckons. So I open the app to see what's open around me and I automatically gravitate to this little gem of a spot. I immediately put myself together to head over for some pulled pork. It's a little dive restaurant, whips up a very good pulled pork bbq. The meat is tender, the sauces (hot and spicy) is remarkably good and the sides I ordered were top knotch. No BS places like these get the front of the line pass on my list. I get my food, I eat it, enjoy it, pay for it and leave hella satisfied. Weeeeeeeeeee!!! Follow me on instagram @rodtorres3

Vast bbq menus for a little joint. Simple, but very great tasting bbq. The smoked hamburger was something I've never had, and I've been missing out. Great hickory smoke flavor in a classic burger. Several sides are also available to create "dinners" that compliment the array of smoked meats.

We ordered the quarter chicken dinner, which is a leg thigh quarter with two sides. My friend ordered the rib tip dinner with sides. The meals this time around (July 30), were excellent. The chicken was well seasoned and juicy, it had that wonderful smoky flavor and smell that I LOVE when eating barbecue, and the sides were reminiscent of my Mother's. This time around, Smokin hit it out of the park. The rib tip meal was especially good as well. I will keep comong back.

Not sure what Rick was smoking(last reviewer) or where he was eating, but he is way off the mark. First the ribs were awesome. Tender, fell off the bone with a good smoke. Sliced brisket was good(although it came close to the best I ever had in middle of nowhere Texas). The pulled pork was ok. I added more bbq sauce and it helped. Now, the baked beans and cole slaw were great. Not from Sysco like Kirk said. Close to fresh as you can get. Nice cool 50's diner feel makes a great atmosphere.

Lordy be! My stomach is about to explode after that meal. This place is in what I assume used to be an old Whimpee Burger. There a number of small metal corner diners in Dayton and in this one's second life (or 3rd, 4th, or 5th. hard to say), it's a delicious BBQ place. The atmosphere is decent enough with counter seating, oldies on the radio, and a great view of a busy intersection across from the Neon Movies and two train bridges. The sweet tea is too legit to quit. It's a white cup of diabetes that'd be worthy to wet and Southerners whislte. The menu is an extensive list of straight artery clogging deliciousness with a very thoughtful heart healthy turkey menu. I had the BBQ pulled pork, chili mac, and some sweet tea. The chili mac was just tops with a great flavor, chunky meat that was just falling apart, and all that atop some mac and cheese. One bowl is enough to fill me up but I went for a sandwhich too. The pulled pork was good and plentiful though the bun was a little disappointing. The BBQ is sweet, so I added some of the hot sauce and it made it just right. The meat is moist and not overly sauced which is both nice and rare. I'm pretty sure this is the best BBQ place in Dayton, if not the best then maybe the best BBQ take out place. Huge perk: Service is FFFFFAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTT.

I actually found this place accidentally. It is curiously located on a corner that is on the edge of the Oregon District. Small, rather quaint looking... and I was compelled to eat there upon first sight! So compelled, in fact, that I had dinner one night and returned the next day for lunch. Had a good experience with both brisket and pork barbecue... and the greens. Smoked burger was good but since there was no seating available I took it "to go". No problem except I didn't answer the questions "What do you want with it?" very completely and forgot to ask for BBQ sauce (or any other sauce). The burger was dressed with the pickle, onion, and tomato that I requested but no sauce of any kind. The owner offered vinegar with the greens but should have (due entirely to my own memory fade) offered a sauce for the burger. The burger was tasty enough and, although not exactly juicy, was quite edible "dry". Let me comment on the owner and his staff -- nice guys! As a customer I felt welcomed but not artificially coddled. That is my kind of atmosphere! Seating was available in the evening but impossible at lunch time. I took that more as a charm factor than a problem. Whenever in Dayton I'll surely be eating here!

It's ok for Ohio, nothing like que from the capitals. But they have one thing I absolutely love that I can't get in KC. ChiliMac--I love this and will be back many times for it

Love this place. Stopped by for a sliced brisket plate. Ordered it with double green beans w/ham, wheat bread, pickles & onions and a Pepsi. Also got a side of the potato chips they cook in-house. Everything was outstanding. The quality of the brisket is fantastic. Definitely my go-to meal there. The turkey (sandwich or plate) is also excellent. Love the friendly & prompt service.

This was my favorite BBQ place in town by far. Today's visit was disappointing. Slow , unfriendly service, pork loin was tough. I'll be back, hoping they're just having a bad day.

My first visit here was ok: nothing spectacular, but I enjoyed it. This time, however, was a disappointment. The person with me enjoyed it, but I've definitely had much better. The baked beans were bland, the mashed potatoes were actually dry, and the pulled chicken was almost sweet, but yet still light on the flavor. This is a place that I want to like...I'll give it another try.

Ended up here after a long night out downtown. I had heard good things from co-workers, but needed to check it out for myself. I had a pulled pork sandwich, which was incredible. The place was packed, even at 1am. Definitely will be back in the future.

Had a half slab of ribs and smoked wing dinner during the OSU/Wisc game. it was my first time eating food from this place. I have mixed emotions about the ribs. Most of the bones the meat was tender and had decent flavor. A few of the bones were well past burnt. "Cajun" doesn't cover it. I think person putting the ribs together should have done a better job on taking those two or three burnt ribs out and replacing them. The wings, on the other hand, were great. Smoked just right and they tasted great without the sauce. I ordered the green beans and mac & cheese for my sides. The mac & cheese could use some work. Will I go back? Yes. I'll try the ribs again.

By far the best in the area! Whether you are out to lunch or need some food after a night out in the Oregon District, this place is perfect. I've tried almost everything on the menu and it is all delicious. All the staples are great and you should also try the burger!

It was my son's Mothers Day gift to me that led me to the Smokin' Bar-B-Que. I've driven past the spot for years always meaning to stop by, so I was excited to try the barbecue I'd heard so much about. The smell of the smoke while walking in the door was a good sign! We were greeted immediately and given drink choices, including THE drink of the south...sweet tea, done to perfection! I had the chopped brisket sandwich which I chose not to dress with any sauce as the meat was flavorful enough on its own. I also had a side of nondescript coleslaw, but, seriously, who gets jazzed about coleslaw? It's just good with 'cue! The brisket was tender and smokey; topped with pickles it was enough to end my never ending quest for good barbecue around here. The homemade chips were a nice touch. My son had the homemade pork rinds which also looked amazing. Couldn't leave my husband out, so I got a half slab of ribs to take home. They fell off the bone as my husband was eating them - I think he actually swooned! We will be eating there again in the future!

  • Rick K.

Sadly this place misses on all fronts. The brisket was already cooked in bbq sauce which made it more like sloppy joes than bbq. Unfortunately, the sides were much worse. The beans looked like they were straight out of the can. The southern style green beans also looked like they came straight out of a can. And I am sure the coleslaw came straight from Sysco. I would put this meal right up there with one from a school cafeteria. PS. The homemade potato chips were actually decent. If they were to turn them into bbq chips they would be really good. 2015
