Got here early for a 4 person table, I had to wait over 20 minutes to be seated because they wanted at least 2 people in your part before being seated, even though there were plenty of seats. .

Seriously one of the worst experiences ever at this location. We went to dinner here tonight, there was a gross odor outside that tended to be in the restaurant, as we were eating two workers were discussing if what was going on in the kitchen was sanitary!!! And it took 20 minutes just to get our billed payed! We will never go back. Looked like the kitchen help was trying to get sewage out of the drain out back when we were leaving. Gave 2 stars because the food was tasty but I'm praying no one gets sick!!!

I go here frequently because it's close to home and I think the food is good. Today I tried the buffalo chicken quesadilla. I'm not sure why because I'm generally not a fan of buffalo sauce. But this was amazing. My main objection to buffalo sauce is it too heavy on the vinegar. Theirs was not. They also make an good cosmo. This may sound strange since this is a Mexican place and most people would be ordering a margharita but my drink of choice these days is the cosmo.

The place could use an update inside. I used the other Yelpers to help me decide what to order. I got the Super burrito and it was good but $13 was to steep for this one item. We also tried fajita burrito which was another suggestion, and it was rather bland. It was to expensive also $12. I wasn't blown away but the food quality and it's not a place I will rush back to. It was just okay.

This is a Dayton must for Mexican. The atmosphere is NOT why you are going to Elsa's -- it's the FOOD and the bad Juan's!! They specialize in Mexican food - get a super Burrito or some enchiladas. Top it with a frozen Bad Juan. Heaven.

By driving by Elsa's, I would have never stopped in, once going in, I felt like I was bringing my kids into A bar, rather then a restaurant. We are military and Elsa's is highly recommended, so we decided to give it a try and the food was very good, for American Mexican food, coming from San Antonio, TX, it is nothing like we are used to, however for this area Elsa's has the best Mexican food in the area. I prefer to order take out, because I do not find this to be a kid friendly place, although they do have children's menus with crayons. I personally prefer to not have my children in a bar environment. Last weekend we placed a to go order and it was not right, however we did not find out until we got home. I called the manager, Penny and she was absolutely amazing and very apologetic. Penny offered to replace the order immediately, however we did not want to drive back out and pick it up, so we just ate what we received. The next day Penny - replace our entire order at no cost and she personally made it. The food was amazing. Penny was fantastic! The food is a little pricy, however it is the best Mexican food in the area and we will continue to be patrons. Thank you Penny for going above and beyond!

I love their wings! I've got Indonesian friends and they've given them the thumbs up on taste. It's cozy and definitely has a hometown feel.

If you're in Dayton, want some complimentary chips and salsa(house-made of course), some amazing slow-cooked meats packed into a burrito, sizzling on an iron skillet, or on a rack of ribs, and some crafted margaritas with a tried and tested true customer satisfaction rate, hit up Elsa's. This place has continued to please over the years, and will never disappoint especially the lovers of hole-in-the-wall cantinas.

Had the fajita burrito - delicious. Weird little place - looks more bar than restaurant, but the service is fantastic, the people are nice, and the food is really good. Went with my brother who has a penchant for the hot, he ordered the "Help me I'm on fire" wings. Did not disappoint. He said they were the hottest wings he's ever had, and that dude loves wings. Definitely worth a visit. I went with a three because the food didn't totally blow my doors off, prolly because their menu is sort of all over the place. Food was good, but that's what the 3 is designed for :) Great server though - I'd give her a 5.

The only thing Mexican about this place is the busboy. It's Taco Bell with waitresses and bad booze. Absolutely horrible.

The atmosphere is of a typical Tex-Mex restaurant. It was kind of dark, but with TVs on, as I remember. The staff were quite friendly, and my food came out pretty quick. However, while I was waiting, I was hoping to enjoy the chips and salsa that you almost always enjoy at a Mexican place. The chips were good, but the salsa was a little lacking. It seemed more like Bloody Mary mix with maybe one little slice of onion hiding somewhere in the tomato soup that was the rest of my salsa. Nonetheless, I finished the first little dish of it that they brought to me. I was hoping that maybe that was the end of one batch, and that I would get a nice new dish with more of the things that we usually associate with Salsa, like chunks of tomato, onions, cilantro, etc. I was sorely disappointed to get more of the same from my first batch. As nonplussed as I was by the salsa introduction, I had high hopes for my Burrito that I had ordered. Burritos seemed to be the specialty here, so I was expecting their finest. When my entree arrived, it certainly looked the part- though somewhat smaller than I would have expected (it was by no means a small meal, but it seems like most other Mexican Restaurants really load you down with enough food for lunch the next day). It was drizzled and cheese, and gave me a bit more faith that I would end my meal on a positive note. Before diving into the Burrito, however, I sampled the Black Bean soup. It was delicious. So, after cleaning my dish of any remains of soup, I tackled the Burrito. Unfortunately, I was once again disappointed. If I were to have the opportunity to rename my burrito, I would name it: "The Black Olive Burrito" because that is essentially what it was. There were some Onions here and there and maybe a couple of slices of green pepper, and of course some green olives. Some people really like Olives, but I am not one of them. Had I known that my burrito was mostly consisting of them, I would have ordered something else. Oh well. Too late. It could have been worse, but definitely not my favorite Mexican Restaurant experience.

First before I review the service and food i have talk about the manager. Our party of 6 eat here once a year. We come in for a convention for the last 30 years. . I told the manager how many a table was set up and two of were seated. The rest of our party was 10 minutes behind. I ordered 3 large guacamole 2 large quesos. The Manger told me if the rest of our party didn't show up quickly and a party of 6 .did come we would have to get up and get back in line. My response was I ordered food an it was on the table. Really sir................ The food was great the waitress was wonderful. Mr Manger we dropped almost 300 dollars .in the future think before you speak

This place has terrible food and strange waitresses. (Except for the greeter that intially seated us.) We were introduced to three different types of salsas, but they were all "flavored water" as one of our group members stated. The food was priced as a regular Mexican restaurant's...but it was more like Mexican bar food. Of low quality and low preparation skills. Why then, do they get two stars instead of one? Well, their margaritas are indeed strong. It gets the job done. I seriously think that's the only reason why this place has so many customers. But the full parking lot still baffled me. And I'd never go here for a good meal.

I have come here quite a bit and I never think the food is that outstanding. Everyone else talks about how good the food is, so I think maybe I am just trying the wrong thing, but everything I get is sort of just bland. I will say though that the queso and waffle fries nachos are delicious! I do not dig their tacos or burritos though. I know a lot of people come here for their Bad Juan's though, so I do recommend having one of those. I believe they limit you to two Bad Juan's though since they are so strong.

From the outside, this place is the definition of a hole-in-the-wall. First thought: this is going to be some fantastic Mexican food. Meh. My half-sized shrimp quesadilla didn't have a whole lot of flavor aside from being spicier than I thought it would be and the queso wasn't spectacular. This place is supposed to be some kind of Dayton institution? I don't see it. I will say, their Bad Juan margaritas pack one hell of a punch. I don't think I would willingly choose to come back here. There are far better Mexican restaurants in Dayton.

Had lunch there today. Very mediocre. Ordered the chicken taco salad and it was not good. I wouldn't recommend it.

The original Elsa's location in East Dayton on Linden Avenue, this is the location where the Bad Juan originated the margarita to watch out for, which will kick your butt if you're not ready for it. This is your American style Mexican where there's tons of cheese and sauce and beans for your enjoyment. Very generous portions and never ending house made chips & salsa. The staff is friendly, happy to accommodate any special requests.

I've been going to Elsa's for over 10 years. I really like the black bean soup. I've tried the "famous" Bad Juan, and thought it was just bad. Overall, I think Elsa's is a decent Mexican restaurant.

  • Ryan W.

Food is mediocre at best. I believe People only buy the bad Juans because they have high alcohol content...I would prefer a standard margarita any day. A couple years ago a manager tried to tell me my gift certificate might be stolen and tried to not honor it because they had been having a problem with keeping track of their hand-written gift certs. I would never buy a gift card at Elsa's again.

Maybe its because I am from Arizona but I think not...The notorious Bad Juan is disgusting...tastes like mountain dew and tequila with a lime....the salsa tastes like pace and when you ask for hot salsa you essentially are given chopped jalapenos (yuck) and the steak and chicken are both flavorless....the chips are stale and cold and the cheese sauce is definately velveleeta.....DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! Oh and did I mention this is the most EXPENSIVE bad food I have ever eaten!!! Not to mention pushy service it was like they wanted us to leave from the moment we stepped in the door....

Started with the Infamous Bad Juan and their complimentary chips and salsa. Chips came warm but didn't look or taste homemade, not a huge deal but a lot of places do the homemade thing. Salsa was good but a bit bland and no kick. I'm sure you can ask for a hotter salsa. The Infamous Bad Juan at lunch for $6.50 is exceptionally overpriced for coming out of a machine. While it was strong you could taste the cheap tequila. Just because the margarita will probably get you drunk after two doesn't make it worth a recommendation in my opinion. The food wasn't too bad for a lunch portion. We tried out the Gazpacho, it was okay. Cost $3.10. The spinach enchiladas were pretty good and came with a "fruit cup" (think grocery story plastic fruit cup, wtf?). Also tried the famous super mini (shredded chicken) burrito. It was tasty and not too bad. All in all I wouldn't go back as I tend to love good margaritas with my Mexican and Elsa's missed the mark for me.

Elsas is one of the best around! Great chips n' salsa, awesome margaritas, and their enchiladas / tacos are the best!

I was so disappointed!!! The silverware was dirty and table next to us was drunk and trying to hit on my friend and I (gross) the food was overpriced and just plain gross thank god I'm only visiting and never have to eat here again this place does not deserve one star but what ever!

So I've been here a few times since it's right up the road from my girlfriend's place. There is nothing wrong with the food I've just had much better Mexican food before but I've had MUCH MUCH worse. Came here for lunch this past weekend and ordered 2 enchiladas (one chicken one pork) and a chili relleno and while it was all good it was covered in so much cheese (and I LOVE cheese) that it all kinda tasted the same after a bit. It seems strange to me how you have to get your own chips and salsa instead of them bringing it to you but I suppose it's not that big of a deal. Prices are on par with most Mexican places as is the decor. Staff has been very friendly each time I go in and service is usually quick.

Ordered the fajita steak nachos (half order). What a joke! LOL Reallynot funny...bag chips covered with lettuce, sauteed onions, thinly sliced green peppers, diced tomatoes, and lots of black olives...oh yeah and itsy-bitsy pieces of steak. That's the joke part. Given the balance of black olives to steak bits, it really should've been called olive nachos with steak bits (kinda like bacon bits). Realy a poor value. Never again. Caio.

You have to come here for the famous Bad Juan! I was in town for a friends wedding and this was one of the first stops. I had no idea what I was in for until I stepped foot into the place. We didn't eat any lunch or dinner because we were going out afterwards, but we did have the complementary chips and salsa which were very good. I had the Raspberry blended Bad Juan, and it was to die for!!! This will be the first place I go to when I make a return visit to the area.

  • Amanda L.

The food here is so-so but what I really go for are the Rasberry "Other" Juan's. They are the best!!!!! I have been to the other Elsa's locations and the don't compare to Linden Ave.. The one in Kettering on Wilmington Pike looked at me like I was crazy for ordering an Other Juan. They didn't know what it was. I will only go to Linden Ave. but be warned. If you have a large group make sure you're all there because they won't seat half a group and they don't take reservations.

Pretty delicious range of food, including every level of spicy hot wings (not really Mexican I suppose). I had a chili cheese covered tamale that was ridiculously bad for me and oh so good. Oh, and the Bad Juans are sweet and sugary and you don't realize how much alcohol you're actually ingesting, until two Bad Juans down the line when you're belting out Lionel Richie with your brother. True story.

If you're actually looking for Mexican, this is not the place to go. If you want a good Margarita, then you've found your lugar.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
