I never knew it was possible to mess up pizza until I had Plank's pizza. When I think of pizza, the last thing I associate it with is sugar and that is all I could taste when I bit into it. Some might like the sweet crust, however, I was not a fan at all.

Don't confuse this with the OTHER Plank's on High St. Plank's cafe is like its less cool unappreciated sister. Think of it like the Marsha Brady of pies. I love Plank's on Parsons. The restaurant itself is a little dirty and a little dingy but I think of it as authentic. The interior is more roadhouse than pizzeria. It is very wooden. Wood floors, beams, booths etc. The walls are decorated TGIF style with clutter and photos but unlike Fridays', they are real. Plank's is actually one of the oldest restaurants in Columbus. Legend has it the reason for the two Plank's is a result of a family feud over a recipe. I have tried both and I declare Plank's on Parson the victor. The pizza is thin and has a very sweet sauce that I have never seen replicated. It is greasy in a flavorful way and tastes just as great for breakfast as it does for dinner. I am pretty lame in my adventures in pizza toppings, but the sausage and peperoni is a sure shot. Lock your car doors and eat at Plank's. And while you're at it throw a football at Plank's on Highs nose!

We used to live down the street on Sycamore from Planks and let me tell you, it was dangerous! The pizza is definitely unique and is very, very good. We live in Scottsdale now and every time the Buckeyes are playing, we wish we were at Plank's eating pizza. If you are looking for a casual joint to get some great pizza (and yes, they have plenty of other good food, also!), stop by Planks. It is well worth it.

Good pizza. Many will list Plank's the best. Again it's good and worth trying. Very good taste. Beware of the amount of sugar. Very Very sweet.

Ok so the last couple of reviews do not count I was another person then. I am here to say their is something so nostalgic about this pizza. I hate pepperoni and this pizza has all that I hate about pepperoni, (And I will not tell you what those are because then you will be looking for it and this is supposed to be a positive review, after all) but still for some reason It is soooooo sooooo good. My mouth is watering thinking about it. And the crust sells it. Sweet and yummy. Careful not not to get it confused with the other plank's they are not the same at all!

Atmosphere is awesome, staff is very good. Pizza is good but had a very unique taste. Very sweet. Takes you by surprise at first. Im more of a savory pizza fan which is the reason for the 3 star. Would go again but would have to be a craving for it.

The only reason I'm giving this four stars and not three is because I love their pizza. And their Italian sub. I have to agree with Jillian in her analysis of the drink prices. Outrageous. But more on this in a minute. I've been here a few times with my old boss who was a regular and knows the owners personally. I went last weekend with my parents and got something besides pizza. I got their Italian sub. My Mom got chicken and noodles and my Dad got their Swiss steak. I didn't realize that they even served real, home-cooked meals. I tried both of theirs and they were outstanding. The Swiss steak sauce had tomatoes in it which is the real way to make Swiss steak, not some brown sauce. The chicken and noodles was outstanding. Very runny but tasty and both of their meals came with mashed potatoes. Italian sub was excellent. It was toasted and had all of the staples: pizza sauce, ham, pepperoni, salami, banana peppers, etc. Overall, this place is a good, old-fashioned local yokel place that has been in Columbus for years. It's mostly an older crowd and families. Ohio State galore and sports themed. Now, their drink prices...I don't understand why this place hasn't invested in a fountain pop machine. They still serve cans of pop. It seems to me that it would be cheaper to have a fountain machine that would provide their customers with free refills. I had one can of Diet Pepsi and felt like I had to nurse it so that I wouldn't have to pay for another. I ended up just getting a glass of ice water in the end. Their pitcher prices are insane. $14 for a pitcher of Blue Moon. It's not even a huge pitcher. Also, they serve their draft beers in tiny mugs. This is the only beef I have. If they would lower these prices, I'm sure they would get more of the younger crowd of German Village and Merion Village and NW Hospital employees for after work. Anyway, this business model has apparently worked for them so I applaud it. They have been around since the 1930s and I'm sure I will be going back with some regularity. Damn good pizza no matter what anybody says!

The pizza here is delicious! So far I have been to this location on two separate occasions, and both times I have had the pizza. The sweet crust is definitely a unique twist, and I found it to be quite tasty when paired with the zesty tomato sauce. Their pizza prices are a little high, but not completely crazy for a sit-down restaurant. They also have a popcorn machine, so they offer free baskets of popcorn as well as peanuts. There is plenty of seating, and just the right amount of televisions if you wanted to watch a game without being bombarded by flat screens. Here's what I don't understand about this place-- the drink prices! Several others have mentioned this and it's totally spot-on. Alcohol prices are way too high for what they offer, and you only get a 12oz pour. They don't have fountain beverages, so even if you get a soda/pop they bring you a can (i.e. no free refills). The glasses of wine are fairly priced at $5.50, but I can't imagine a world where a pitcher of beer costs $14 in a midwestern city. Come for the pizza, and get yourself an ice cold glass of water to wash it down.

I'll confess to being biased as my family has enjoyed good times at Planks for years. But there has to be a reason we return right? The obvious answer is the pizza. The sauce and crust are the right kind of sweet and the atmosphere is that make yourself at home welcoming.

  • Mike W.

I have been here and had the pizza several times. I knew the pizza crust had a slight sweetness to it and that has been okay, in the past. Tonight I got a small cheese and mushroom with extra sauce and I am glad I only got the small. The crust was SUPER SWEET this time around. So sweet, I think I have diabetes now. Dear, Planks: You've GOT to do better.

  • Spencer Y.

Pizza is a sweet crust, can't fill up on it but great to order and munch on while drinking beers with friends. Beers are a little pricey for the area. Staple of Columbus.

First the good: The people are super nice and welcoming and comfortable. Yup that's it. I had ordered pizza there before and absolutely hated it. And trust me, you'd be hard pressed to see me order a pizza and throw it away. WAY too sweet. It was gross. Now I live walking distance to the place so was hoping to have a good place to go. This is not it. Remember before you moved to the city and thought the little restaurant in our town had good food? Then you ate real, fresh food? That's what this place is like. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger that doesn't come with anything. The SMALLEST burger I have ever seen outside of a fast food joint. For 8 bucks. No fries. Nada. The burger itself tasted good but was so small. It brought me back to the "where's the beef" commercials. The bun it came on was clearly store bought. The kind you had as a kid but not in a good way. They would do well to take advantage of a great local bakery. Because it came with nothing. NADA. I ordered the Fried Mushrooms. Clearly frozen and popped into the fryer. Again, they'd do themselves and us a huge favor by getting fresh mushrooms and hand breading them. The menu is very old school and seriously the burger was the only thing that was semi appealing to me. The older locals must like them as it's been there, apparently, since the 1930's. But it surprises me that the older crowd would be willing to spend so much for so little.

Their pizza taste like it had either a bag of sugar in the dough or was drenched in pineapple juice... It was terrible and def not worth my time, I don't know how anyone can stomach this pizza after 3 pieces I felt like vomiting and just threw away my 17 dollar pizza...... Thanks:( not

Friendly and welcoming staff. If on the fence about sweet crust, get the all of the way to counter it. It has quickly become an addiction. Love Planks!

My friends and I manage to get to Planks at least every couple of years, with my most recent visit being this past Friday evening. We always get the pizza, and the flavor hasn't really changed since last time I was there. The crust definitely has a sweet taste to it. They have an entire menu of other food, but we have never tried it....our reason for going is the pizza. Beer is served either on draft or I believe you can get cans. This past visit we went pitcher and somewhat regret it. The pitchers weren't exactly full, they came with quite a bit of head, and they weren't cheap. I will likely return to Planks again at some point for the pizza, but will be going for the canned beer.

  • Chip D.

Sorry Plank's. I've heard good things about you, but sweet pizza is not for me. The crust is just way too sweet for my taste and the aftertaste is not something I'm enjoying. I really wanted to like you - I love supporting local businesses. Perhaps, I should have ordered a sub or some fish instead of the pizza :(

    (1)
  • Michael C.

Very disappointed. I love me some sweet taste in my pizza, but this was the worst pizza I've ever had in my life. I have a taste in my mouth that frightens me. Forgive me for these harsh words and more power to you if you enjoy this... t must not be for me.

  • Christina K.

I have to say I have given this place a lot of chances because a number of my coworkers really like and says they have the best pizza. Well I have given it a fair shot and it's all about your personal taste and in my opinion it's the WORST pizza I have ever had. It's like eating sugared flavored with meat and a hint of tomato. Every bite I have to painfully work my way through and today I had to give up and order some home fries. I've also tried the Reuben it was dry and lacked flavor. The chicken and noodles is also bland and seems to be made with not fresh ingredients. I highly recommend Nancy's for chicken and noodles. They seem to only have canned Pepsi and they are $2 each!! Two cans of soda and I could've had a 12 pack! Service is lacking, the servers don't seem to hear well and if you ask for anything out of the norm they get very confused at annoyed at you. The one good thing I can say is they do know how to fry potatoes perfectly.

Planks has been a long time and for good reason they make a slamming pizza pie. The cheese is deliciously real and toppings fresh. Tonight though, I'm pretty certain they had a miscalculation on ingredient amounts. The crust tasted like a honey bun. Good? Bad? I couldn't decide - but it was definitely not the normal that I remember from before. I'd normally give this joint 4 stars but I didn't care for sweet crust. I'll pop in soon and give it another try.

It's sweet pizza - as in a sweet crust and covered in sweet sauce (not my fav). But it's a Columbus landmark and a pretty cool place. Def. check it out for the sake of checking it out.

I love pizza. I love sweets. But their pizza crust is wayyyyyyy to sweet. I knew it would be a sweet crust but honestly its like a dessert. Odd.

While I've had some not-so-great pizza in my day, I have never really hated a pizza before or failed to enjoy eating leftover pizza, whether cold for breakfast or heated up for lunch/dinner. Unfortunately, Plank's has managed to hit these two "firsts" for me. My husband and I ate at Plank's Cafe in German Village a month or so ago. We moved here within the past year and wanted to find a basic pizza place we could hit up whenever we wanted something local instead of Donato's, Pizza Hut, or Papa John's. We'd already identified Harvest Pizzeria as the best local place for fresh, brick oven-baked, sophisticated pizza, but 1) they're closed on Sundays and 2) sometimes you just want a basic pepperoni pizza, not a pricey, fancy pie with organic toppings and a cheese you can't even pronounce. We'd seen Plank's commercials, website, and flyers so we thought we'd give their pizza a try. We won't be making that mistake again. The pizza was disgustingly sweet. Had I read the reviews first, I would have known that's Plank's thing. But I didn't and we suffered through an entire pizza whose crust could have been a dessert. And while there was plenty of cheese and toppings on the pizza, and indeed those great little pepperoni slices that crisp and curl up at the edges like another reviewer said, the sweetness of the pie just killed it for us. We thought the sweetness was from both the crust and sauce since it was so overwhelming, but I guess, again going from the reviews, that it was just the crust. We even thought the crust was store-bought since it was so weird. Is it? Do they just add sugar to pre-made dough? Seriously, it was that bad. We actually had to force ourselves to eat the leftovers since the pizza was so unappetizing. I have NEVER had to force myself to eat leftover pizza before; I didn't think such a thing was possible. Maybe sweet pizza works for some, but we won't be eating pizza at Plank's again. Maybe we'll give something else on the menu a try though. Hopefully they don't put sugar in everything!

Loved the pepperoni pizza on the sweet crust. Tasted like Kings Hawaiian Bread Pizza. Has a collage atmosphere and beer and other stuff that I wasn't too observant about. The customer service was down to earth. I have no idea how much the pizza was, because my job paid the bill for the retirement party that was being held there. My favorite pizza though. I will take it to go!

Planks has pretty good thin crust and their toppings are top notch. The owner is hilarious to be around with and I always receive good service eating there. Only complaint about this place is the alcohol. I could see them up charging more to keep certain demographics from staying too long but come on, 14 dollars for a pitcher of domestic beer? It's not even a full pitcher and these guys love to add head/foam instead of pouring it out. Don't bother getting anything smaller because a 12 oz is like 6 or 7 bucks. Their mixed drink menu pricing is confusing and even the bartenders need to refer to the pricing chart every single time because each alcohol has a set price. Also, if you are going to get soda or pop or whatever people in ohio calls it nowadays, just get a pitcher. A pitcher is 2 dollars more than a glass of sodapop. My advice, pregame somewhere cheaper where you can get drunk for less than 30 bucks. Then come into planks when you get to that happy drunken phase and enjoy their delicious pizza and free popcorn. Ask for a pitcher of beer foam to keep your buzz going.

Probably one of the best if not the best pizza in town! Meat is from local Columbus company. Great crust and great atmosphere! Came here after I married my wife, it is our place! You can't come to Columbus without going to Planks!

  • Brian D.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Plank's on Parsons. My wife's family all grew up in what used to be called the "South End" and they've frequented Plank's over the years. I even ended up here after our local wedding reception. Plank's serves up a sweet pizza, literally. Knowing this, I always stray from my normal pep and shroom to some spicier toppings (sausage, onion and pep work great with this sauce/crust). The crust is thin and square cut, in that Columbus tradition. The sweet sauce/spicy blend truly makes this a unique pizza. If you don't like pizza on the sweet side, they have plenty of other good eats. What sets Plank's truly apart is the service and Tommy Plank himself wandering around chomping on his trademark (unlit) cigar, recognizing many and greeting all. You'll always get a "Thanks for stopping" out of him.

Food was 4 stars (-1 for amount of corned beef on the reuben). Service was 3 stars at best (we called in our order). They deliver, but not to "certain areas" even though it was less than a 3 minute drive from our house to the resturant.

Not your everyday Pizza - and that's a good thing! Went to Plank's for a Happy Hour on a Monday for the first time and was blown away by this place. It feels like a dive bar for pizza. I was forewarned by friends about their "sweet dough" but I actually enjoyed it, in part because it wasn't just the same pizza taste you get everywhere. Probably not a taste for everyone though. The Parsons location is huge with lots of party rooms and tvs to watch various sports games. Only knock I have on this place is the price. On Monday's pizza is half price, which is actually closer to 'regular' price. If it would not have been half price I would have called it overpriced. Definitely plan on going back, but only on Mondays.

  • Hanna D.

Okay. I haven't tried happy hour yet, so as soon as I do I'll update. Their pizza is pretty delicious. With the yummy sugar on the bottom it set off my pepperoni and pineapple pizza perfectly. Although it was a little overpriced for me, a $2 price reduction would make it worthwhile. The service is great, everyone is very friendly and helpful. The gentleman behind the bar only worked there because he loves it so much. If you're looking for a place with a pretty normal beer and food selection and a friendly homey vibe, I would suggest Planks.

If you are looking for great food, affordable prices, and unique atmosphere, then you need to go to Planks. You need to order the Meatloaf with Mac/Cheese. Does not disappoint. Can't wait to go back.

It makes me sad when sugar is added to food unnecessarily. Sweet pizza crust isn't really up my alley so i just ate the toppings but those toppings were DELICIOUS :). Plank's does something special with their sauce and it went really well with the veggies I ordered on my pizza. If you think you could like sweet pizza then you'll probably love this place. My husband very much enjoyed it. Taste reference: we're huge fans of Houndogs :)

Planks is a very special place for my husband and I. We had our first date there and continue to go back. Recently we had our wedding at Schiller Park and then made sure all of our guests came to celebrate with us at Planks. The wedding was on a football Saturday, and typically Planks will not reserve tables, but with a wonderful manager Matt, he helped make our day a great one! The staff was excellent as well in assisting in all the little things we needed, such as help set up the cake area, serving all our guests, and thinking on their feet when we needed more plates for the cake! Our day was awesome, and Planks helped make it so. We would of course highly recommend Planks for hanging out, having a great pizza, or even having a group from your wedding party celebrate with you!

I really tried hard to think of worse pizza...but for the life of me I could not. The crust was really under cooked. The dough and the sauce were sweet. It was over-priced. There wasn't anything good about it. Awful.

  • Lisa E.

This is an old favorite of mine! Down here in Arizona we do not have much great pizza (even though bad pizza is still pretty okay), so I had to stop in while I was visiting. This place is unique in that the pizza dough is almost sweet!! And the sauce compliments it very well. Another great thing about Plank's is the way the pepperonis are always crispy on top, yet the dough is not overcooked on the bottom. Yum, makes me hungry just thinking about it. The service and restaurant are also nice...the place looks and smells like a good pizza parlor. I can't wait to visit again! I am salivating writing this review, too bad Plank's is a couple thousand miles away.

    (4)
  • Gavin D.

This review is about the pizza. Said pizza is really sweet. For real, like a donut sweet. Not like a sweet tomato sauce sweet. The dough is down right sugary. It's weird. And while I like to think I'm open to new things, and ate several pieces trying to break out of the box of what I expect from pizza, I just don't like it. Some people love it, for whatever that's worth.

Planks is delicious! My boyfriend's family brought me here a few months ago for the first time and I fell in love. It's a small hole in the wall place off Parson's ave (not in the best location, but well worth the trip) When you walk in there is an elderly woman working at the front who greets you with a big smile. A lot of the staff are older and have been working at planks for years. I learned this talking to the older gentleman who brought out my takeout order on the second visit. Everyone was so friendly and seemed to really love it there. I will say the pizza did take quite a while to get out to us once it was ordered but like the drive it was well worth the wait. The crust is a sweet crust and it's the best I've had! I liked it so much I had my boyfriend take me back the following week and we ordered take out and I liked it just as much the second time as I did the first. We've had pizza at other places since then and every time he asks me if I like it as much as I do Planks and I always say No, Planks is the best!

Plank's is a great old fashioned Columbus favorite. While I can't speak much for the rest of their menu, they certainly produce a consistent pizza product which I have come to love. As most of you have read, there is a little sugar in the crust, but don't let this deter you. It is not overwhelming by any means and it does something special to your taste buds via the salty sweet mixture of the crust sauce and toppings. If you haven't been, it's worth a shot. If you don't fall in love with the pizza, you will certainly fall in love with the staff, community and local experience at this Parsons Ave eatery!

Unique taste; quick service. I'm new to King Lincoln and I'm used to being in a funky part of downtown that was just far enough that no one delivered. So, when I saw a coworker get pizza delivered for her lunch, I just had to jump in. Turns out it was Plank's. I ordered a cheese pizza and I have to say, I'll be ordering again, very soon! After ordering, my pizza arrived in about 20-25 minutes. I popped it open and the aroma was mesmerizing. I'm not native to Ohio, so I had to remind myself that square cut on a round pizza is standard. One of the first things I noticed was the ration of pizza to toppings. It wasn't overloaded with pepperoni, nor was it too sparse. It was probably the best example of a well-pepperoni'd pizza that I can remember. And they have those tiny pepperoni that crisp up around the edges, adding great texture. Speaking of texture! The crust is phenominal! It is thin with just enough bite that you can truly savor it, but you're not chewing forever. I give Plank's 4/5 stars for two reasons: First, the customer service over the phone wasn't stellar. I was rushed through my order, wasn't quoted a price or how long it would take, and I was hung up on before I could ask more questions. Granted, it was lunch time, so that won't keep me away. Second, even though several other reviews mention the sweet sauce, I wasn't expecting it to be as sweet as it was. The sweetness is not subtle, but I don't feel like I'm eating dessert. I will say, though, that it slowed me down a bit, because it is so unique.

I have lived in GV for about a decade now, and Planks on Parsons is pretty well known, in and outside of the 'hood. Some southend locals love it, and preach all over town about it. Its also pretty well known that the owners/bartenders are rude, and apparently some of the waitstaff. Pizza - Tastes like pizza on a sugar cookie crust. Often incosistantly cooked. BTW, this place is NOT cheap. Soda is $2 for a 12oz can to keep the parsons bums from sitting in there all day and drinking free refills. (Customers take the hit) 2 large pizzas, 2 small salads (Garbage), 2 domestic beers and 2 iced teas - $70, including tip.

    (1)
  • Josh P.

Pizza was so so. The topping were good but the crust is sweet and just has a funny taste. $3.95 for a can of pop is pretty absurd. Service was so so. The waitress seemed in a sour mood from the time she walked up to the table. This is not a place that I would come back to.

My friends and I are on a Happy Hour binge, and this was the Monday stop this week. We stopped in on a Monday for half off pizzas, and showed up around 5 PM. The place was pretty empty and easily accommodated our large group, although I will say it filled in quite a bit by the time we left a few hours later. The inside of the place is definitely akin to a local joint that hasn't changed its decor in decades, with lots of local sports memorabilia and pictures. Its not much to look at, but it has a lot of character. The staff was friendly and easily split our bill, no easy task for a party of 12. As far as the food goes, I enjoyed the sweet crust. Their pizza menu isn't extremely long with specialty pizzas, and they don't have tons of toppings, but they have the standards. One of my friends ordered the Cajun Chicken and really enjoyed it. The pizza is that middle ground between regular and thin crust, not quite as crispy as the thin but not as carbolicious as the regular. I might have gone with 4 stars, except our pitchers of domestic beer were $13. Seemed a little outrageous to me, maybe their Tues/Thurs happy hour specials are better.

As a night shift nurse at a nearby hospital, there's nothing like stopping by this joint after a long shift for an ice cold beer and pizza at 7AM. The fact that this place is open so early is awesome. The pizza is delicious. The crust is thin, crunchy, and with a sweeter flavor almost like cornbread. The mini tacos are pretty satisfying too. They are tiny and fried. The pizza overall is kind of on the pricey side in my opinion, but it's worth it after a long night shift.

Best Pizza in town hands down. Staff treat you as a regular, and always a fun time. Open at 7am serving EtOH which is perfect. Plank's has a special place in my heart.

  • Caz O.

Based on take out pizza alone: the building is confusing & kind of in a shady area. Don't try to go in the front or right side. They "don't have a medium" pizza. Only a large & a small. I'd hate to see what a small looked like because the large was only about a 12 inch. The prices were insane, a large mushroom pizza was $13! You can get a tastier & bigger 1 topping pizza at Little Skeezer's for $5! The mushrooms were canned. The reviews about how sweet the pizza is are true. I like sweet sauces on pizza and thought I'd love it... I did not love it.

I stopped into this establishment the other evening to imbibe with a rowdy group of my fellow hashers, and was shocked to find this type of classy place on Parson's. From the exterior and location I was somewhat expecting a seedy bar with a few sketchy locals, but boy was I wrong. I entered the bar early and was immediately welcomed by a gentleman wearing fantastic garb who was happy to converse with me. Of course everyone asked what we were celebrating that evening, and seemed amused when I announced that we were there to drink, drank, drunk. As my large group rolled in, the waitresses were happy to help us and prepare separate checks. My friend ended up with a pitcher on the house, and the drinks were more than reasonably priced. At the end of the night my friend saw his bill and declared that he would return to any place that charged so little for a mixed beverage. I have to say that I found the pizza delicious. Stealing a piece from my neighbor, I noticed that the sauce or the crust happened to be delightfully sweeter than expected. It really added something to the flavor, and I had to use self control not to take another. I can't speak for the other food choices, but my group seemed happy with their sandwiches and fried variety. I was definitely impressed with the service we received, it was a great evening with some lovely individuals. I'd suggest stopping in for a pint to talk to the entertaining bartenders and enjoy a pizza.

I went during the lunch hour on a weekday and I love the customer service and friendliness of this place. The food is good as well I has the combo; turkey sandwich and navy bean soup.

Favorite pizza in Columbus. But only the Plank's on Parsons

Got a large cheese pizza and an antipasti salad. Total $23 and change. The crust was basically cardboard, no flavor kinda gummy. Sauce was sweet, cheese was ok. Salad was nothing special but overwhelmingly small for its $6.50 price tag. The house dressing was awesome! Service was good and staff was friendly; perhaps pizza isn't there specialty, search for better place on the east side

Everyone has had their fair shares of pizza. Planks produces my favorite plain pepperoni pizza to date. I love the sweetness of the crust with the spice of the pepperonis. Besides, when have you heard of a stand out thin crust? That's kind of a big deal to get you to evaluate pizzas not only by the topping but by the crust too.

The pizza was good, but the atmosphere was great!! Such a cool place, and the owner is an awesome guy. He wanders around and tells stories and chats with everyone in the place.

Planks has a unique taste that you just want when you want it when it comes to Pizza. Never had a bad pie here. Love the atmosphere.

This has got to be the last of the real local Ohio diners that offer the atmosphere you grew up with here. It is a blue-collar, old country (music) establishment with diner type food at a decent price. Since returning to Ohio a few years ago, I really missed these type of locales. Coming here almost put a tear in my eye. I felt like I was around some real good people. They are authentic. None of this fusion style, pretend food. I don't like the sweet crust on the pizza but they aren't trying to be Italian so I won't worry about it. The waitresses are old style and probably have worked here many years. They have that "hon" type personality that I think we should have more of. The kind of staff that you know really cares about your business and enjoys talking with you. Don't worry about the neighborhood, only good people stop in here. The parking seemed safe to me. People respect an establishment if they know whats good for them.

Whatever you do, don't get the 2 Plank's locations confused (as they are pretty damn near in the same vicinity to one another) or at least give your compadres clear notice WHICH Plank's to meet them at. A simple distinction that I recommend is the one with sugary pizza crust and well the one with just regular pizza crust. Go for the sugary location (which is the one I am reviewing) if you can't decide on which location to try. It's like nothing you've ever had before. I may be hallucinating, but I think I read somewhere that the sugar is used in replace of some other common pizza ingredient and is actually healthier. But I could be making this up but it's nice to think it might be a smidge healthier. Service though at this location was less than stellar but I mean you'll get so high off this pizza the fact that your water glass is empty will be a long forgotten memory.

Hands down the best pizza anywhere. Columbus, Ohio, USA, the world. In fact the pizza is so good I've never tried anything else on the menu nor do I know if they make anything else. As other reviews have stated, this Planks is not to be confused with Planks Bier Garten on High St. I made the mistake once and wondered how such a wonderful pizza could be so terrible all of the sudden--I quickly realized that there were two Planks in town and I was at the wrong one. Whether you decide to dine in or take it home or have it delivered, rest assured your hunger will be satisfied, in fact you will probably stuff yourself because the pizza is so delicious. I'm not sure if it's the sauce or the pizza crust, but one of them has a slightly sweet taste and this just blows the normal pizza paradigm out of the water. It's not like eating a cinnapie or anything like that, just enough to make it different. The crust is cooked crisp to perfection and the pizza is topped with an explosion of pepperoni and vegetables. Drinks are served by the can rather than the cup. The interior of the restaurant is historic to its time. The service is great, one of the few restaurants I've been to where I have no complaints. This is a must do restaurant if you're visiting Columbus for a few days.

Plank's confused me at first because I couldn't figure out where to park and I didn't want to walk from Nationwide Children's Hospital. It turns out the parking lot is in the back. The pizza was good, with a thin and crunchy crust and plenty of toppings. The sauce and the crust were a little sweet for my tastes, but compared to anything else in the area it is above and beyond good. Also, it's a very casual bar, so you don't have to dress up to fit in.

Looks as though Plank's is a love-it-or-hate-it kind of joint. I don't fall on either end of the spectrum; the dive bar vibe and great service wanted me to like it but the pizza and the prices let me down. With taking it as its titular name, we felt obligated to try the pizza, so a large veggie pizza it was. The crust has a unique sweetness; my guess is that they borrowed Pooh Bear's favorite sweetener as the "secret" ingredient, but don't tell anyone. The veggies on our pizza were fresh . . . from a can. Other menu choices included a range of standard bar grub, jalapeño poppers, mozzarella sticks and subs. The food was about what I expected it to be, and the real problem was the price; I've had fresher, tastier pizza for less. Did I mention that a 12 oz. can of PBR was $3? Aside from that, it does have a nice set up, and with the well-established "regulars" and friendly and familiar bartenders, it was welcoming. Just not impressive.

Plank's is very come-as-you-are, which I find refreshing. You know that friend you have that when they ask how you are, you really tell them how you are? If that was personified in an eating establishment, I think Plank's could be that place. Plank's pizza is among my favorite in Columbus. No, really. It's actually got it's own thing going and does not taste like any other pizza I've had before. I love that about it. There's a parking lot in the back that is mostly full, but has always had a couple spots left for me. Service is usually pretty good and if you're in the mood for chatting, chances are your server is too. Even though we came at the tail end of happy hour (seriously, like 6:59/7:01), our waitress let us know that if we knew we wanted it right now, she could put it in right now and get us the lower price. But even without a discount, drinking is cheap to do here. 5 clams for a glass of rose wine (if I'm feeling into that sort of thing) or a mixed drink (I am always feeling into that sort of thing) and draft is pretty cheap, and sometimes they bring it to you in a fancy chalice! And what's not to like about that? Sidenote: their jukebox always eats my money and never plays my song. Consider yourself warned!

I hate to give anyone a poor review, but I was very disappointed with Plank's pizza. It was extremely sweet (some say it's the crust, but I thought it was the sauce), and the crust was chewy. It was so undesirable that I couldn't even finish what was on my plate. I only ate what I did because I didn't have any other food in the house! And to make it "stomach-able," I dipped it in some spicy cocktail sauce. A very sad dinner. I was also appalled at the price! The menu only offered small and large, so I assumed the small was a reasonable size, especially since it was listed for $12.50. Nope. It's your typical 10-inch pizza, which, incidentally, was $14.95--perhaps because it was delivered. After handing over my $17 (I couldn't bring myself not to tip the delivery woman), I still held out hope for deliciousness. But, as you know already, those hopes were dashed. One positive: The service was friendly and fast! (But, I guess that's small consolation.)

Not to be confused with Plank's Bier Garten in German Village... I absolutely love the pizza here. There's an interesting sweetness to the pizza dough which really sets it apart from the rest. The small pepperoni's are always cooked perfectly; curled up and a little crispy around the edges. This is probably my favorite pizza in town. I haven't eaten anything else here so I'm not sure about the other dishes.

Strange. I'm from out of town and was told this was a place to go for pizza. In my opinion, Pizza shouldn't be icky sweet with an after taste. I've never tasted pizza like this and wouldn't do it again. Seems to get some good reviews. To each his own I guess ...

I stopped here today for lunch. It's a BIG place. I'm not sure why I was surprised by this but I was. I ordered a hot roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. And the waitress offered to bring me some horseradish on the said which I accepted. The beef was very good and the potatoes were great! I'll have to come here again one of these days.

I have relatives that live in German village, and Planks has been a required stop during visits since I was a little girl. I can only comment on the pizza, as I have never gotten anything else there-it's DELICIOUS! The crust is sweet-I definitely think they put some sugar in there. Given my fat kid-esque love of all things sweet, I think that is a big part of what makes it good. I live in Cleveland, and have brought Planks pizzas home for my family before. The restaurant/bar itself is fine, as you would expect for a sports bar/good pizza sort of place. I would definitely recommend stopping here for some good pizza and a good beer.

If you want good ole pizza this is the place to go, they have a sweet cornmeal crust and a sweet tomato sauce. It's a local fav that I crave about once a month, they also have fresh popped pop corn and peanuts as snacks. Can't loose. The only down side that I know is they have canned Pepsi products, I'm a diet coke drinker and there's nothing more I want with that pizza other then a ice cold diet coke. Check it out.

This place is classic. Got a real "Happy Days" vibe. Very lived in. Cool-ass older bartenders and decent pie. More of an "experience" kinda place than a foodie's spot, but decent all the same.

Sugar in the crust! Reminds me of a good OSU restaurant. Also reminds of why I need to move out of Columbus. Overall, good solid pizza shop.

This place has everything. Great people. Fantastic pizza (I think they're hiding cinnamon in there!) Atmosphere. And beer. Don't get this location confused with the High Street shop. They might be brothers but their pizza is NOT the same. This is the spot if you want good pie, and a good time. Especially on St. Patrick's Day. Yep.

What happens when you crush up animal crackers, put sauce and cheese on it, bake it then have an insolent prick ring it up at the counter? You have a trip to Plans under your belt. The pizza tastes like candy, in a bad way. Waaaaay too much sugar. On one hand it distinguishes itself from other pizza places, on the other hand after the second slice you're done with the whole pizza. Also, their sausage is really bad. Onto the service. I ask the kid "what would you recommend?" he says "uhhh. its pretty much a standard pizza, you can get whatever topping you want" Thanks dude, glad i have full run of the toppings list. "Anything better then the rest or something i should defiantly check out?" "Uhhh its just, whatever toppings you would want". Do yourself a favor and go to Sparano's.

I would give it 5 stars but the prices have gone up so much. Still love it here especially the pizza because it has a the best crust. I've been going there since I was little with my family and it's a fun bar especially half price Mondays during football season

They have the best pizza ever! I think it has something to do with their sweet tasting crust. The staff (and especially the owner) is great, and it has a great atmosphere. It's definitely one of my favorite places to eat in Columbus. They have a 1/2 off (dine-in only) pizza special on Tuesdays too.

With out a doubt the best pizza I've ever had. The reviews describing it as tasting like candy should have a Snickers bar - there is a wonderful subtle sweetness to it, nothing like the negative reviews claim. It took me years of going before I even realized that it was the sweet crust that made it unique. Great German dishes in addition to the pizza, and a vibe that feels like Cheers - highly recommended.

This pizza is alright. I did like the fact that their crust is sweet. It's entirely different from what I usually eat, so it was a nice deviation. Peter D described it well with the "animal cracker" comment. It does taste exactly like that. However, their pizzas are wayyy too small. My boyfriend and I easily finished the large between us. I wish they would have offered a larger size. Anyway, my feelings about Plank's is that they're truly overrated. The pizza is fine, but not anything to write home about. (BUT I must mention that they played Sinatra and Dino the whole time I was eating, so I was in heaven).

Great pizza, very refreshing w the sweet crust, instead of greasy crisp crust. Drinks are way overpriced for a family pizza joint. I'll go back again in 5 years, but not next year

Cool place, lots of character and regulars. Friendly staff. And can't beat a bar that opens at 7am. But I'm not a huge fan of their food -- their pizzas are fine, I'm not big on their sweet animal-cracker crust. Overall, it's A-OK.

planks pizza not what i remember . it is too sweet. almost like crust is made of cookie. prices are high. each topping beyond one is 2 dollars each. i will stick with the chain deals. ie pizzahut etc.

This place is the opitamy of everything that is wrong with Columbus. The pizza tastes more like a dessert, and the wait staff is incredibly rude. I don't recommend going here.

  • Rob B.

Peter D's review is all the more reason to give Plank's 5 stars. Dude likes Friday's and thinks the kid working Plank's pizza counter is a tool for not recommending pizza toppings as if Plank's is a five star restaurant. Like others said, the crust is sweet. That may be love or hate but a lot of people love it. To get the full effect of the place go in and sit at the bar and talk to the owner, Tommy, and the rest of the older fellas behind the bar. This place is a Columbus institution and is still doing it right after all these years. It hasn't changed but that is its charm and character. You cannot replicate it. A lot of hearty homestyle fare in addition to great pizza and friendly service. I've taken several out-of-towners there and it is the only place they want to go when they come back to town.
