The happy hour drinks and appetizers are a ridiculously good deal here, which earns at least three stars on its own, on top of the fact that our service was good and the food was pretty legit. I like the atmosphere, although the tables in the back are a little brightly lit for the feel of a pub. Other positives are the antique hardwood floors, cool Scottish knick knacks on the walls, and a decent sound system with a decent selection of music. Our service was really good at Mac's- she was helpful, friendly and honest. She was upfront about the happy hour special, and even let my friends order two drinks at once to take advantage of the discounted pricing before it ended. It's refreshing to get attitude-free service in the Short North. As an app, we all split the soft pretzels- nothing special (the cheese dip was the highlight), and the fried green beans- pretty tasty. My entree was one of the Scottish Specialties- Forfar Bridie. It came with way too many fried onions, but that didn't bother me as I just removed them to nom my meat pastry. The gravy on top of the meat and puff pastry was amazing. I want to pour that gravy on every savory dish I ever eat until I die from a gravy heart attack. The puff pastry was perfectly crispy, light and layered. This dish also came with a salad to start, which is always top notch. I would definitely come back here, and I would probably order the same thing every time I come back. The tuna salad looked good, but when my friend ordered it I saw that there were peas in it. I can do without peas, so I will probably avoid the tuna salad. My boyfriend had the cottage pie, which I didn't like as much as my entree. The other guy in our group got the fish n chips and he said they were nothing special (looks like I won!).

Great burger - I mean, great. What I like about the burger is that the bun doesn't get soaked and squishy. To me, that means quite a bit (remember, I'm a snob). The Mac Burger is the one to get, and to be honest, its the best tasting too. A good appetizer is the soft pretzels, which come with cheese sauce. It comes with too much cheese sauce, but that's a good thing because you can then use the sauce to dip your fries. BRILLIANT! Stay away from the taco salad, you could get the same thing at any Mexican place. Their Chili is good, get extra onions on top! Nice decor, good atmoshpere and the stamped roof tops it all off!

Jon- "This place looks familiar" Me- "No, I don't think so" Jon- "Yeah, we came here with C & L " Me "oh, I think I remember, we sat in the booth next to the bathroom" I looked at the menu, couldn't remember what I ate last time. Ordered Babybirds recommendation - the Mac Burger. Food came. Started eating. Me- "I really like the burgers at Red Robin" Jon- "I could spend all day at Red Robin if they had an all you can eat french fry buffet" Verdict- I'm writing this review only as a reminder to myself that I've been here, and don't need to come again. Foods bland, boring, and not good for me. If I want a great burger for $9. I need to go to Red Robin.

After seeing all the restaurants that we passed looking uncomfortably full we decided to pop into Mac's. I have eaten there a few times and always been happy and this time was no exception. When we arrived there were very few people there eating and it was perfect but by the time we left it was crowded and someone had taken the noise meter and turned it waaaaay up because in order for us to talk to one another we had to scream (yes, we were sitting at the same table) and our waiter had to bend down and get thisclosetoourface. Like another reviewer mentioned, some of the items that we wanted they were out of so we had to get our 2nd choice which not that big of a deal BUT I did have my heart set on the cookie dough cheesecake and they were OUT. We did get some of the Bailey's cheesecake though and it was out of this world! Service was great, food was awesome (try the sauerkraut balls- I know it sounds gross- just try them) and we left with a happy, full belly. Thanks Mac's!

Oh, Mac's. This place doesn't have the greatest food in the world, but I definitely give it points for atmosphere. It is just nice and unpretentious, which is definitely hard to find in the Short North. If you are tired of all the packed hipsteresque places like Bodega and Betty's, etc., go to Mac's. It's comfortable, even if it gets crowded. The staff is friendly and pretty attentive. Not class-A service, but that'd just be weird. The best things about Mac's food are: $3 wings on Tuesday nights, huge baskets of steak fries, good greasy sandwiches, and Mac's Fudge Delight (get that if you are really stoned). Some of the other menu items are so-so. I dunno. I just love this place. They have a good selection of beers, whiskey, scotch, and the nice high wooden booths are very homey. Mac's!

Nothing exceptional here, but nothing bad either. Its a good pub. I visit it frequently, but never to use the bathroom...

Joey, the bartender, will rock your world. Also, a pretty impressive selection of beers on tap (my personal fave: Abita Purple Haze), but also includes Magic Hat's Roxy Rolles, the Brooklyn Brewery's Black Chocolate Stout, and soon to include Harpoon's Winter Warmer. My friend and I ordered nachos, which were not as loaded as we had hoped for, but still a good snack while boozin'. Mac's is a place where you can just hang, and if it's a slow Sunday or Monday, they'll put in a movie, or crank the jukebox, or whatever you want.

Mac's has been a Columbus staple for me for many years. Wing night gets you a pound of wings for about $4. The chili is thick, wonderful, and just a little spicy. But the star in my mind is the Scotch Egg. I'd love to know what goes into the sauce that they serve with it! Yom!!!

Came here to meet friends on Saturday night. We ordered some food and had a couple drinks. I loved the soft pretzels. Nice bar and decently priced.

The well attended (on a Friday night at least) and wide-open seating area of Mac's Cafe creates a constant buzz that would lead you to believe that it would take 10 minutes for your server to take your order and another 20 to have food in front of you. Surprisingly, this wasn't the case with my experience. I ordered a reuben with a side of cole slaw, which was delivered to my table within the 8-10 minute range. The cole slaw was amazing, in fact it was probably the best I've ever had at a restaurant (it kills Brazenhead's tobasco slaw). The reuben was A-OK; it's difficult to screw up or impress with that type of sandwich. Overall, Mac's is a solid option for drinking/dining in the Short North. The only thing that would make me think twice about Mac's would be the beer selection. It seems somewhat limited when compared with some of Mac's competition in the area. Tip: Look out for some of the weekly specials that are listed on the menu.

Next time I come here, I am definitely going to try the scotch eggs that everyone speaks of so highly... but last night, Mac's was perfect for a casual (not anywhere near first) date. It was positively roaring for a Tuesday night, and we did have to say "what? WHAT?" over the crowd a lot, but it was actually quite charming (also, both of us are a little er, hard of hearing from all the live music we have taken in in our lives, so this may not be just Mac's). There was such an interesting variety of people here - lots of after work types (it was circa 8pm), some dudebros and hos, some fellow Clintonville-looking types, etc. The service was also very good considering that the one waitress was being run ragged by an overflowing bar and restaurant (maybe there were other waitresses and waiters, but I saw our gal on the complete opposite side of this large restaurant taking orders at one pt - kudos to her). The food was great for bar food - I love the Scotch selections. I got the cottage pie, which came with tots instead of brocolli because apparently they were out of brocolli (haha). I could finish neither the cottage pie nor th tots, but both were excellent. The boy had something I cannot recall, the name was Gaelic, but it was similar to the cottage pie only involving a savory pastry (cottage pie = no pastry). His was also excellent but too large to finish when including the massive pile of onion strings (rings?) involved in the whole affair. This price is a bit high, but I do think it's worth it - I loved the atmosphere here, and the food was yummy and comforting. I'd really love to come here and Drink sometime, to make it a true Scottish experience (haaaa sorry I had to!).

Went here with my wife on Thursday July 7 at about 5:00 pm. There is a public metered parking lot right next to Mac's that made it convenient to get there. We seated ourselves in the booth in the back of the restaurant/bar. The booths are nice because they have a really high wooden divided between them to give a good deal of privacy. From 2-8 pm is happy hour (half price appetizers and alcohol specials). She got the sauerkraut balls with a dipping sauce. They were excellent. She also got a Blue Moon on tap. For our main course I got a the grilled salmon sandwich. It was not fresh salmon, but a pre-made patty that was grilled. But it still tasted good. It came with a choice of side and I had a side salad. She ordered the reuben sandwich that was plenty big and her side choice was the fries. The serving of fries was huge! The Columbus area Entertainment book has a coupon for purchasing one meal and getting the second meal free. We used that to get a nice discount. The service was quick and the food pretty good. Bathrooms were very clean. There is a pool table hidden away in the back by the bathrooms.

Mac's. Ahh Mac's. Having spent my entire high school/college career in Columbus I can give some kind of weird insight on places like Mac's. For me, it's crawling with awkward memories as well as those kids I knew in high school and thought they were the coolest dudes-like-ever! Until I found out quickly that they're just arrogant assholes and I fell for their schtick? Yea. They're there. A lot. But, Mac's has got something to say if I give it five stars and continue to go back there amid the awkward "omg, how are you?"s and weird email exchanges. As I frequented this place mostly in high school and the early years of undergrad, I don't know how their beer selection is. I can say from eating here too many times that I can guess it's good. The food is what I know all about. Nom. Scratch that: double nom. The Club sandwich is by far the best Club sandwich I've ever had. No lie. For a long time, it's all I ate at Mac's. Then I discovered their onion rings. To die for. For serious. I love love love them. Thinly sliced and barely battered-yes! Mac's is laid back dining for people who just want to chill out, get a beer and a good bit of grub. Once I went here and it took an insanely long time to get my food. But, it never kept me from going back. Next time I'm in Columbus I should head down there. Maybe I can run into those losers. Or, just get an amazing Club sandwich.

This place rocks! It's my favorite place to grab a drink in Columbus hands down! It's somewhat of a Sunday evening tradition for my girlfriend and I... Oh and by the way the food is great too! Joey is the man! My girlfriend and I love to just hang out and watch a movie when he's behind the bar on Sundays. Stop in... Highly recommended!

So were were suppose to go to Barley's but when we drove by it didn't really look like our kind of scene so we kept driving around looking for a place. At some point we got tired of finding places on yelp to check out after we passed them (wouldn't it be great if yelp could tell the direction you were traveling and give you a list that way) and decided to just park and walk. As luck would have it we parked right outside of Mac's Cafe. The place is decorated in a pub theme but is old enough that it doesn't feel like a chain (big problem with lots of the newer places in Columbus). We sat down and ordered our drinks which came quickly. One of our friends went to the bathroom and found a back room with a basketball game and pool. We took our drinks back there and played four games of pool without being interrupted by anyone other than our server who was nice enough to keep checking on us even though we were drinking rather slowly given all the fun activities. He was great and really nice. We had a very fun afternoon!

Scotch egg... a heart attack with a side of cholesterol. But sooo goood. They also have great burgers and fries. It can get really busy on weekends, so be forewarned.

$3 Wings Tuesdays. One pound of delicious wings drenched in tangy barbeque sauce, mild sauce, or spicy sauce... All for $3. What more is there to say? Once you've gotten through classes and/or work on Monday and Tuesday, you're gonna be wanting some chicken wings and beer. Because really, what else is there to do on a Tuesday night? Atmosphere is nice - big place, usually not too crowded (at least on Tuesday nights). There used to be a piano in the dining room with an awesome hired musician on certain nights, but it's been replaced by a jukebox. If you're craving chocolate, get their brownie with icecream - it's to die for. Overall, a great place to go if you're premenstrual, stoned, broke, or just really need some calories.

Used to live nearby and I really miss Macs. IMHO, best wings in town if you like'm hot. I order medium with hot sauce on the side. The BEST thing going is the Cellar-temperature Guiness. Be patient! It takes awhile for a good pour, but this is the way Guiness was meant to be. It is the only place I know of in Columbus that does it right.

Food is decent but don't go on a busy weekend night- you have to seat yourself and you don't realize until you are the one sitting at the table eating your meal but people will actually hover over you waiting for a seat. I would suggest a week night meal.

Food is ok if you are drunk. Try the Scotch egg if you have never had one before. The service here sucks really bad.

I've never had a bad experience at Mac's cafe, and really the only reason it doesn't get a 5 star rating is because I've never had a phenomenal experience there either. Located in the short north Macs provides a reasonably priced meal, an ice cold beer, and a good place to sneak away to during the brunching hour. Their wings are pretty good...and this is coming from a wing snob, sandwiches are exactly what you expect in a pub.

    (4)
  • Michael B.

Great happy hour. The club sandwich and tater tots is a favorite. Beware of the hot wings, they are no joke! I love spicy wings but these are not your normal hot wings! I shared some with a fellow hot wing lover and we struggled but loved every minute. The portions are huge. The service can be hit or miss. The servers are always friendly but the time to get our food has sometimes been longer than I would like.

HUGE portions for the price. Wedge salad was half a head of lettuce! Ordered the sauerkraut balls, and there was 8 of them! Most of the menu was your typical bar food, I was hoping for more authentic Scottish pub favorites. There were a few though. Husband had the fish and chips, and wasn't very impressed. Small pieces of fish, and bland fries (needed salt or something) Nice place to stop in for a beer in the Short North

I remember this fabulous, casual place to dine in the Short North area of Columbus. My personal favorite over the years was their STEAK PIE. Although I moved out of Columbus a few years ago. I plan to patronize this place during one of my near-future visit to the city.

I didn't like Mac's, which seems crazy because it's a bar with bar food, but it happened. For the appetizer, we had onion rings. They were good, but the dip was seasoned terribly - just way too much pepper, absolutely awful. I will complement the size of their salad - it was huge. The pieces of lettuce and other vegetables were very large. My fiancée and I both had the Mike Brown burger. It was not very good. It was hard to eat, extremely messy, and it did not taste very good. To top off the entire experience at this restaurant, the service was awful. Also, not much on the menu looked good. Maybe I'm being too hard on the place, but most of the other restaurants in the neighborhood, even if they haven't done a great job, have done a better job. I should mention my visit was in June 2013 during a week night dinner. Not crowded at all.

The absolute best thing on the menu is the Scotch Egg. If you are going here, it is a must have. The atmosphere in Mac's is wonderful and so is the service. You can sit and enjoy your meal or grab at spot at the bar and just enjoy a drink. They have a great amount of beers on tap and the beers they have are awesome. A great place and many happy memories!

  • Robert T.

What can I say about Mac's? It is a great neighborhood pub that offers a great selection of beers, good food, and good service. The chili is one of the best in the city. I always get the onions and cheese added - live it up some! I have tried almost everything on the menu except for a couple of traditional Scottish dishes, and liked them all. On a recent visit I had the Tuna Melt on Rye. It was so good that I thought they had went and got the Tuna from the Columbus Fitch Market, but Keith and Suzette protested such comments.

We went to Mac's on a Friday night because it was the only place we could get a table on short notice. Their beer list and their food were satisfying, but kind of forgettable. The place is pretty big and it is cheap, so if you're looking for a place in the crowded Short North on a weekend and you don't want to spend a lot, this is a decent place to go.

  • Big Baby Jesus C.

Well holy shit Batman, we have a regular bar in the Short North after all. It's not a dive, not some fancy $10+ martini bar, just a regular bar. Been past it 100 times probably. Always thought it was part of Fabian's till last night. On top of all that, I got the best burger I have had since arriving in this God forsaken cow town. Good ground chuck, cooked to order even, crazy.... It came with a ridiculous amount of tater tots, like half a bag, and for under $9. Everyone, staff and patrons, were friendly to boot. I will be back, but you should stay away.

So Mac's. It looks like our party of three stumbled into this place for many of the same reasons as my yelp predecessors- we were hungry in the Short North and wanted some unfussy food without a 45 minute wait for a table. In the interest of fairness, I should point out that the night we visited was quite busy. We had no trouble getting a table or anything, and it certainly wasn't elbow-to-elbow in there, but it was a bustling night. So bustling, in fact, that our server apologetically informed us that there weren't enough pint glasses available for all three of us to have both beer AND water. They should probably buy more glasses- I recommend a trip to Ikea. I ordered the veggie club, and the boys both got burgers. I was excited to see Tater Tots as a side choice on the menu because only fascists don't like tater tots, you know what I'm saying? We also decided to go out on a limb and have a starter of the sauerkraut balls. They sounded delicious- unfortunately we'll never know how they tasted because they never showed up at our table. I'll assume they were kidnapped because after we'd eaten I asked our waiter to remove them from our check and he was shocked that they didn't arrive. Amber alert! I have a habit of asking the waitstaff for recommendations, especially if I am having trouble deciding between two menu items. Our server was quite honest, which was really helpful, but it also seemed like he didn't heartily recommend anything. Not such a good sign. My veggie club was only okay- it didn't contain some of the ingredients promised by the menu description which was a little disappointing- and the boys liked their burgers a lot, although later they both said they were too hungry to really be picky by the time the food came out. That's the other issue- I think we waited for about an hour for our food. Again, it was busy, but not busy enough to warrant a wait like that. I will give them props for a juke box- that's a nice touch. But I won't be coming back here again unless its just for a drink at the bar.

Happy hour prices are pretty good. Their wing prices are definitely worth it.

Mac's is easily my favorite pubaurant(word???) in the Short North. Hands down, the best happy hour in the city-- half price apps($3.50 for a lb of wings[don't even think about the "No Refund" sauce; the name should be warning enough], crazy good soft pretzels, Scotch Eggs, etc) and a fair selection of moderately priced beer(cellar temp Guinness, anyone?). The consistently quick service and attentive servers/bartenders, something not always found in the Short North area, is a HUGE plus. I haven't made my way through the entire menu, but I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered to this point. Mac's continues to impress me with every visit. Nightly specials(beginning at 9pm, if I remember correctly), in addition to the already amazing happy hour, make Mac's a great place on a budget.

My favorite place to hang out in the Short North! Mac's is always busy with people, and parking is always an issue, but it's so worth it. I love everything about this place (I just discovered it connects to Fabian's!)! Try the Scotch egg, because I was so scared of it for the longest time (immature taste buds), and once I finally gave in, I've been hooked. Joey is by far the best bartender! Ask if he is working when you stop in.

I had a friend in town last weekend and we wanted food and drinks so I suggested Mac's. This review isn't so much about the food and drinks, as it is about the service. I give it 3 stars because I've had good experiences all the other times I've been there. We had a server named Terri (according to the receipt) who immediately seemed completely uninterested in being our server and maybe just life in general. The first problem was that I asked for Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey on the rocks. She came back and said they didn't have it. Which I thought was strange because I had it the last time I was there. But whatever. She offered an alternative and I said ok. She brought it back and it was a warm shot. LOL. What part of "on the rocks" was confusing? Also, she gave us a drink menu and the beer list had at least 6 beers crossed out in black marker. If these are no longer an option, why not just print new menus? Its not like they were on some fancy paper at all. It was just a regular piece of paper in a plastic sleeve. Tacky. Terri seemed irritated that she'd messed up my drink and that I sent it back. She brought us our food and barely checked on us again. It sucked that my out of town friend's experience with Mac's had to be a negative one. I wont allow just one bad experience to ruin Mac's for me. IDK if she was new or what. but I don't recall ever having her as a server before and if I get her again I will request someone else.

Worst rueben sandwich i have ever had. The drinks were cold but the tables are crowded and too close together. I'd come back if I had to but I'm not going to make it a destination place.

This is a hidden gem of a bar and is truly underrated in the bar community. I didn't discover Mac's until sometime within the past year. Actually that's a lie. I came here 2.5 years ago for the first time but didn't start "frequenting" it until a year ago. I'm no beer snob, so I've been satisfied with all their drink selections. I highly suggest eating here! I die for the chicken salad sammie on a CROISSANT. Buttery, flaky goodness. They even put sprouts on this sammie. Sprouts are a totally underutilized sammie topping. If sprouts aren't your thing you can obviously ask for it without them or simply pick them off. Also, you can get TOTS as your side. Do not make the fatal mistake of offering up your tots to your friends as they will attack your plate like savaged beasts. Instead, wait until you've had your fill of tots then offer them up.

Not my favorite spot to stop on the bar hop. It was incredibly busy and I couldn't even move. We ordered drafts and stood squished at a wall table. The floor was sticky and the place was overcrowded with tools. There was no vibe except for people getting drunk and acting like college kids. Maybe they were all college kids. I downed my Guinness and was so ready to leave. Note: The bartenders were really fast, super attentive, and nice so at least we checked out on a good note but It wouldn't be my choice for a normal hangout. Peace

I am so disappointed. After not wanting to wait for an hour on a Tuesday night for Betty's across the street ( damn you Columbus Restaurants!), Jon and I decided to head over to Mac's. I had heard that it was good from one of my amazing students actually, and Jon had been having hankering for a burger. So, why not? The waitress was pleasant and the place was spotless. We ordered onion straws for us, a burger for Jon, and a fish sandwich for me. The prices were pretty reasonable as well. Now on to the food. The fish sandwich...listen, far be it from me to judge Irish food...but isn't an Irish pub supposed to have pretty good fried fish fillets? Like in fish and chips? Isn't it sort of a staple, am I right? Well, the fish had this terrible texture. Hot, but chewy and soggy and what I've always imagined Lutefisk to look and taste like (AGH GROSS NEVER). I mean, it was obvious that it had been frozen and then just thrown into fryer. Not so good... For an Irish themed pub and grill, please work on this. People expect good fish fillets from places like these, and my dinner this evening left much to be desired.

Good beer selection and great bar food. The biggest problem I have with Mac's is every time I go I end up too stuffed from food to keep drinking. Love the tot's (why doesn't more places in Cbus serve tots?) and the mac burger is tasty. It's never too crowded to be overwhelming. Just a solid spot. It's been around awhile and there is probably a reason for that.

My office used to be right across the street from this place so I've done it all at Mac's. 1. I took my boss' 3 year old daughter here for chicken nuggets and fries. 2. Said goodbye to a coworker over a mean burger and fries. 3. Had an extremely uncomfortable and important pre-promotion lunch with my executive directore over an oversized Caesar Salad. 4. Shared awesome potato wedges and a ball of onion rings with a black and tan with coworkers after work. 5. Drank my weight in PBR after staying super late in the office to meet a deadline. There is very little about mac's that is five star and four star is pushing it in terms of quality and service, but when it comes to versatility and a guaranteed good time this place is solid.

Not a good experience. It was red white boom but didn't seem more crowded than what you'd expect on a weekend. We were seated immediately and waited on right away. Got our drinks and then the wait began. The waitress kept our glasses full (but soda was a little flat), but it took an hour for a side salad. Hamburger and poppers were ok. Cottage pie (kind of a shepherds pie) was cold. Even if warm it would been so so. Steamed Broccoli side dish and tasty...the best thing we had. All n all disappointing.

I really like Mac's because it offers a difference experience than my other go-to places in the Short North (Bodega, Barrel 44, etc.). Mac's is a little bit more low key, and their happy hour specials are awesome. (For the record, half-price appetizers go a long way in making me a happy grad student.) I absolutely cannot resist their hot pretzels. I'm also pretty impressed by the great seasonal beer selection, both draft and bottle. Yet another great thing about pubs and bars in this city. I'll be back at Mac's again and again. Of the tavern-style places in the Short North, this is definitely my preferred.

My friends and I stumbled upon Mac's by accident after we couldn't find a restaurant to hold all 10 of us at 9:30 p.m. We had all just left a wine tasting at Camelot, so we were ready for some good pub food. We must have walked in at just the right time because there were three tables that we were able to push together to accomodate our large group. Our waiter immediately dropped off menus and got the drink orders rolling. I warned him that we were all going to be on separate checks, but he did not seem to mind one bit. Our drinks were brought to us very quickly (especially for a busy Friday night) and then our food orders were placed. I was so excited about the menu. So many random things to pick from. I order the grilled cheese and tator tots (while my friend joked that I needed a booster seat with my order). The food came out very quickly and from what I could tell, everyone was pleased with their orders. Two of my friends got burgers that were huge and looked delicious. My grilled cheese was great (hard to mess up) and the tator tots were an awesome addition. Good service, good beer, good food. I'll go back for sure.

don't be fooled by the name, this is a decent little pub. +1 for friendly service, even though we only had 1 round. +0 for decent beer selection, but nothing special +1 for location (short north) interior is what you would expect ... lots of wood, large bar, dimly lit. there is a metered lot just north of the building ... enforced daily except sundays and holidays. recommended, but don't expect anything out of the ordinary.

Good draft beer selection. I like the atmosphere. You can easily hear your conversation.

Went in for a quick drink. I keep hoping that one of the Irish/Scottish pubs in town would have Murphy's but all they have is Guinness. Drinks were a little more than I normally pay in Columbus (then again, I didn't hit it during any specials), and they poured the Guinness a little faster than I would have, but otherwise it was ok. Nothing special about it here, but nothing bad either from what I saw.

I really like this bar. This is a great place to get a burger or dinner (limited menu). After hours, this place is amazing. Really good beer selection and appetizers. I would suggest this joint to anyone in the area looking for a more relaxed place with chill people.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!!!! The staff and owner are always friendly and cheerful. The Scotch Egg is amazing! I go through withdraws (like I am now) if I have not eaten there at least once a week. The happy hour is one of the best I have ever seen anywhere in terms of prices and length. I always feel comfortable and there is always a good mix of people here.

We have ourselves a winner! Talk about an overlooked prize of one of the most obnoxiously trendy parts of the city! If you want to get a good mental picture of what Mac's turns in to after midnight on a weeknight, start off by imagining your favorite Scot/Irish pub. Now imagine it being half the size with only 1/4 the amount of corny chotchkies all over the wall. Throw in an awesome tap selection, cheap domestics, and a artery-busting food menu that's got awesome prices, and you've got yourself Mac's. If only it weren't next to Fabian's- my other favorite bar in the Short North- I would've discovered this place much sooner. First thing's first- the beer. Of course they've got Bass and Guinness on draft for all you rowdy Irishmen, but they've also got a handsome selection of imports and microbrews as well- bonus points for two different kinds of Leinenkugels! On top of that they've got two dollar PBR drafts as well if you feel like keeping things extra lowbrow and extra drunk at the same time. The liquor selection is on par with most of the competition and contains a fine well whiskey that makes for some cheap, stiff whiskey 'n cokes to keep the night flowing smoothly. And then you have the food. Even if you just stop by to get drinks, you'd be a fool not to do like the locals and order an appetizer or two. A couple nights ago a group of friends and I split orders of onion rings, potato wedges (fries maybe?), and sauerkraut balls. in order: the rings were a beautiful mess of deep fried deliciousness that was more like a "Bloomin' Onion" at Outback- (sauce and all), the wedges were light on the seasoning yet packed full of bold flavor, and the sauerkraut balls were without a doubt the finest I've ever had in Columbus. None of that pre-packaged made in a factory crap- these definitely tasted like they were hand-rolled on the premises. I can't guarantee whether they actually were or not, but they were awesome either way. And then there was the Scotch Egg- a tribute to Irish-American excess that would make Anthony Bourdain himself squeal with delight. First, you take an egg and hardboil it. Then you cover it in breading. Then you cover said breading in crumbled sausage. Then you deep fry the whole thing. Then you slather it in a mysterious off-white sauce that may have something to do with ranch. THEN you eat it. Then you call an ambulance and get the plaque scraped out of your femoral artery. If not, you will die a happy man. There's only one bad thing I can say about Mac's, and that's the proprietary nature of the seating. If you want to sit at a booth, you HAVE to get a server to sit you down and keep the drinks and food coming. Expected during daylight hours, but kind of a pain if you're there after hours and just want to hang out and serve yourself so to speak. Our server definitely got a pissy look on her face after we got up and moved back to the bar when we realized we didn't want to be waited on when we could just order our drinks directly from the source. Oh well, this place still rocks any time of day!

Mac's will always be one of my favorites. It's located in the Short North, right near a public parking lot. For those of us that don't live in the Short North, that parking lot is pretty great (especially when it's cold). Every time I've been there, I can easily find a seat and we are helped relatively soon after. There was only one time where we came late on a weekday and no one came over to our table in the front. We still kept going back. We love their wings and they have a good selection of draft beer. A great place to hang out for awhile. It's one of those places where it doesn't usually get overwhelmingly loud (so you can still have a decent conversation).

Mac's has become my go-to place in the Short North, especially since it's only a few blocks away. It has a laid back, neighborhood pub atmosphere, and even on weekends it is a welcome change of pace when places like Front St and the Arena District are packed and way too noisy. The servers and bartenders are always friendly, and I have yet to have anything less than excellent service. They have a rotating selection of draft beer, and it is consistently good. You can also get Guinness at a proper temperature here, and they have a separate tap for it. For food I've never gone wrong with the turkey reuben, and I love that they offer tatter tots as a side instead of friend. Drinks and dinner for two will usually end up running you around $30 with tip, and always feels like a bargain compared with some of the much pricier restaurants nearby. Highly recommended.

Great happy hour specials.. Overall a good value for food. The side salad served with fish and chips was larger than any entree I've ever seen. The iceberg lettuce in it was large chunks with parts already bad. Fish and chips were okay. I did like the sauerkraut balls for an appetizer.

This place was nice, but nothing to really write home about. The food was decent, and the options wide. I'm not a drinker, so I can't say anything about the bar, but on a Saturday afternoon, it's not a bad place for a late lunch. This is one of those places where their is not really a lot to say either way.

I've sat at a booth and ate at Mac's once. It wasn't especially memorable. But I do like to swing into Mac's and grab a tall Newcastle late at night from time to time. Joey is a great bartender. I'd stop in to see him even if it was a seltzer bar. What's a seltzer bar? I don't know, but I don't think they serve Newcastle there. I stopped in with a friend on Tuesday- he ordered the wings- 3 bucks for a pound, I believe. He was pretty impressed with the whole deal, but I think wings are way too much work for the low payoff. So taking his word for it, the Tuesday wing deal is stellar. As far as the atmosphere goes, it's kind of strange. When I first walked in, I thought it was a run of the mill sports bar. Then I started noticing all the European flags, and realized they were going for a UK theme. Despite all the signs, mirrors, and flags that imply some connection to the UK, it still kinda feels like a sports bar. It even draws a sports bar kind of crowd if you go before nine or ten. But if you hit the place around twelve or one, you'll run into a more laid back interesting crowd.

Good food, good prices, great service. My friend spilled her beer on the bar after only consuming half of it and there was a fresh pint in front of us before the bar tender had even taken his towel to the mess, that counts for something in my book

I'm really digging Mac's because it's a great place to get good late night food. And I'm not just talking bar food. At 11:30 at night the full menu was still open to us, though sadly they had already run out of the Steak Pie. Traditional Irish food and American fare occupy the menu. I had to try the Scotch Egg just to say I had. For the curious, it's a hard boiled egg encompassed in sausage, then deep fried and served with a delicious and creamy herbed sour cream. It was really good, but I suggest sharing with a friend to keep your cholesterol levels low. I had a burger with cheddar cheese that I ordered medium rare. It was cooked very rare, which wasn't too bad, but be aware that this might happen. I think my favorite part about Mac's Cafe, other than the late night dining, was the movies that they were showing on the projector. I'll come here every Sunday night to catch dinner, drinks and a movie!

At first glance, I would say that Mac's is more of an average bar with pretty good food (I'm all about the mini pretzels during happy hour!). However, what makes this bar so memorable is the world-class service! My first time at Mac's I had a server wow my pants off by reciting every beer they have (which is not a small list!) and its happy hour price -- she was out of breath, but so helpful! The next time I was there the server helped me get a closer table to a TV so I could watch college football. Mad props to the service, I will definitely continue to go!

Oh, Mac's Cafe... I have spent the better part of my college years in this place. Every Monday night for half off sandwich's and after every college theatre production. I also celebrated my 21st birthday in their backroom. -They have a great import selection. -I love the location. -The food is pretty awesome. Plus they have tots. I would also recommend the friend green beans with honey mustard. -It's really great for groups. They are pretty cool about pulling tables together as long as you leave a pathway for people and servers. -You could also fit in one of their booths for a little privacy. -Downsides are, the staff turns over alot so you can sometimes play Russian roulette with what kind of server you get. -It can get a little spendy. -It gets VERY crowded on weekends. This place has been a big part of my late teens and early twenties and it will always hold a spot in my heart.

Loved the Pub atmosphere. Ordered the Cottage Pie and Mac's Burger (bacon, cheese and coleslaw) which my wife and I shared. My daughter had the Mac-n-cheese which she loved...and she is a picky 4 yr old! The entree's were delicious - seasoned well and cooked perfectly to order. Not a fan of the fries or salad, very basic and uninteresting. But didn't really matter because the main dishes were delicious and filling! Washed it down with an IPA and a New Castle. Will definitely go again.

Stopped into Mac's last night with some friends. It was LC's birthday and mine was the day before so we were on a bit of a High St. Birthday Bar Crawl. This was nowhere close to the first bar this group had seen that night, and there were probably around 10ish people in our group by that point. We set up shop at a table or two but everyone was really just running around the bar at that point. Some people ordered drinks from the server and some got beers at the bar, which did not make her (server) very happy. "if you're going to sit here you need to order your drinks from me," or something close to that but the intonation said it all. Just snooty. As a former server, I get it. She is loosing out on money, we were behaving like drunk monkeys at that, but come on... you can be pissed at us but you can let us know in a better way too. I'm not going to change the 3 star rating. This is still a 3 star place, but better at the bar than the tables for sure.

I saw a pic of the Mac Burger and thought the base of the burger looked good (not a slaw fan) so we decided to stop by for lunch. Besides anyplace that serves "Sh*t on a Shingle" and spells it out is going to get my business at least once. It's a nice atmosphere...deep wood tones, green and brick. Good tunes playing including a little OSU marching band medley to get the patrons pumped up for the OSU/Miami game later in the afternoon. We ordered the jalapeno poppers (cheddar) for an appetizer. They were kinda puny but still good. (Not worth the $7.25 we paid for them given the size and the fact I could've bought 2 boxes for the same price at GFS like they did) The salsa they gave you dipping was really good. We got lemonade and iced tea and I wouldn't normally review drinks but the lemonade was like sugar water with a slight hint of lemon and their freshly brewed iced tea was really strong. For an entree we both got burgers medium well. His was a burger with bacon, swiss, mushrooms, grilled onions and he added A1 and got steak fries. I got a cheddar, bacon burger with steak fries. Mine was overcooked and underseasoned. Mustard and ketchup couldn't save it. It wasn't the worst burger I've ever had but nowhere near the best. I was kind of perplexed at how bacon can taste like nothing. It's obviously cheap. The hubby agreed. The steak fries are actually not steak fries, they're potato wedges that look like they were cut from a melon sized mutant potato. They were overcooked and flavorless too. I ate 4 of them and left the rest. Sigh. The hubby had a different experience. His was cooked to his specified doneness and he liked the flavor (excluding the bacon which contained none.) But then again, he poured A1 on it and as we all know, A1 can make a boot taste good so I'm not sure how good the burger actually would've been without it. He ate all of his mutant fries and said he'd get the burger again so there ya go. Our lady server was attentive yet indifferent. The bill was $36 before tip. grumble. We'll likely be back though to give it another shot. I will get Shit on a Shingle just because being given permission to order a dish with a curse word in it appeals to my inner 3rd grader.

For the past few weeks, I've had the same Saturday routine. We go out to dinner with the intention of going to Betty's. When we see there's a wait, we walk across the street to Mac's. I think we just try going to Betty's so we don't tell ourselves that we're going to Mac's yet again because, let's be honest, the food at Mac's is good. As everyone has said, the scotch egg is delicious, but there are ton of other amazing entree items. The burger is good. The tuna melt is good. The salmon burger is good. I had one of the entree items served with onion rings, and that was good. It was like a puff pastry filled with meat and gravy. Everything is tasty. The sandwiches are always served with more of the side than you can possibly eat. French fries? you have to share. Onion rings? be prepared to shovel your face, which embarrassingly enough I literally shoveled onion rings into my mouth here. There was one time when I completely cleared my plate of onion rings. I was pretty disgusted with myself, but our server was impressed.

Mac's does two things better than anyone else in town: Sauerkraut Balls and the Scotch Egg. The Sauerkraut Balls are sauerkraut and sausage that is fried. I'm not sure if there's a batter, but they do have a crust that holds them together. The dipping sauce is kind of a spicy tarter sauce. Very good. The Scotch Egg is a hard-boiled egg that's wrapped in sausage and fried. It comes with the same sauce as the Sauerkraut Balls. There's something about the spice of the sausage and the richness of the egg yolk that makes you feel like you're sitting in Scotland. The fish and chips is terrible. I don't remember the Reuben being particularly great. Stick to the two appetizers above. Together, they're a great meal.

Well the outside was very nice looking, I was hoping for it to be fun... First walking in from awesome 90 degree weather into maybe a room that was 5 degrees cooler isn't too fun. So from there sat down and waited for our waitress, she seemed nice, until she didn't know any of the specials or and sort of Irish beer. Instead I ordered peroni, after that I was never offered a menu for their beer list. After getting the beer list i was just super sad seeing that it was like any regular bar. Same beers nothing really Irish, The food was okay, but all I have to say if you have Nachos at an Irish bar it is not an Irish bar. So my friend Vince and I ordered a burger with blue cheese. it was good, but to many toppings and not enough meat. Our waitress was never to be seen again, we waited at least 30mins to ask for our check then another 20 to pay. The service was lousy and didn't enjoy myself at all. I will not be returning to this bar or be recommending it. P.S. If you don't serve Killian's Irish Red, then do not plaster signs advertising it. Just saying. LIES!

Mac's is GREAT! Apart from the flags and brewery-mirrors, I don't think it's authentically British at all, but Mac's has a nice, laid-back atmosphere, the servers are extremely friendly and efficient, and their burgers are imo THE best in town (and they cook it to order - including medium-rare, unlike that laughable Red Robin nonsense). Definitely try the Mac Burger - the coleslaw/bacon/burger combo is great, trust me! Great fries too. (And I don't know what it is about their pickle spears - they are SO delicious! I always ask for an extra one). We were going to try the Scotch Egg, but at like $4.50 for one, we gave it a miss (shame). Although parking isn't bad when we go for lunch, I imagine it can suck during the evening. Mac's is in a great location though - it's nice to walk off lunch browsing the shops nearby

Pretzel and cheese (nacho), good. Taco salad very good, big portion. Meatloaf was very good along with the fried green beans but the mashed potatoes were bland (even with salt and gravy). Service was decent. Would recommend.

Mac's is a place that I've spent a decent amount of time at during my college experience and after graduation when I've been in Columbus. This Short North bar is the perfect place to get a group of your friends, grab a table and settle in for a few hours. When the jukebox gets going, expect most of the patrons to join in. The servers and bartenders are really great. After a while, you pretty much become like friends. They have a large selection of beers available, both domestic and international. This place can get busy on the weekends but you'll be with plenty of good company. Expect a younger crowd here comprised mostly of young professionals. The burgers are good and so are the fish and chips. A must have during any visit to Mac's is an order (or two) of their tater tots and an order of the sauerkraut balls. For some reason, there's nothing like them. Expect good size portions for a low price. Can't be beat in the Short North.

Oftentimes went here when Betty's across the street was too full, and it ended up becoming a favorite as well. This place is a heart attack and a half. Seriously, between the Scotch egg and the macburger, I can feel my arteries clogging just thinking about it. They have excellent whiskeys and beers (I am super picky about beers and I can still find something I like here). The waitstaff is pretty decent too, but nothing really special. All in all, a great place to go to if you're looking for a bar with coronary-inducing food.

I really enjoy this place. Hooray for Scottish food! My boyfriend and I decided to check this place out about two months ago. And how the heck had I never been here before? It's insanely close to my house, but I'd somehow never been here, not even once! Crazy. For those of you who don't know where I live, which I hope is all of you or else that's creepy, Mac's is in the Short North right on High St. We found a place to park on the street (yes, we drove, but it was also snowing out and very cold!) and walked in. The parking would be a hit or miss because High St. is crowded most of the time as far as the meters go. In the warmer weather I will definitely be walking here. This place is so cute! It's bigger than I expected, but still not that big. It's all decorated like some Scottish or English pub. I liked the atmosphere. Very laid back, and it gave us both the impression that this was a good place to enjoy some brew. If you've been here, you probably know what I mean. You just feel like you need a beer in your hands! The floors are wooden and they creak when you walk on them and it feels like an old-timey little pub. It's cool and it adds to the atmosphere. It wasn't too crowded but most of the tables were full. It was also pretty loud, so I had to speak louder than usual for my boyfriend to hear me, even though he was sitting right next to me. It certainly sounded like a busy place. We were seated at a table sort of near the front door. Our server - some tall guy wearing a T-shirt and shorts (in December) came to our table and got us some waters. He also took our beer order. I can't remember what I boyfriend got, but I'm pretty sure I went with a Stella. Their menu was really different. It was kind of like the same food you would expect anywhere else, but every dish had a twist that made it stand out. I really appreciated that. And the prices really weren't bad at all. My boyfriend checked out the appetizers and saw that they have mini soft pretzels. That was it, he was sold. He ordered those and they came out about 5 minutes after our beers. And what a good pairing with beer! These pretzels were so good. They were in the classic pretzel twist shape but small, so they could fit in the palm of your hand. And they were served with a cup of cheese sauce. Soft pretzels and cheese for the win! They were awesome. We conquered them. (FYI, if you have ever had Old Bag of Nail's mini soft pretzels, they are essentially the same thing.) As for the rest of the menu, it was hard to decide, but my boyfriend went with one of their burgers and I got the chicken salad sandwich. I swear, anything that's served on a croissant is good in my book. We waited a while for our food and just sat and enjoyed our beers. There were a few TVs so we were watching those and enjoying the drinking music that was playing. We really loved the atmosphere and didn't mind that our food took a while. And when it came out - it looked amazing! My boyfriend said his burger was great - I hardly saw it he scarfed it down so fast, so it must have been good. I have no idea what was even on it. And my sandwich was huge. It was also really good - a different taste than most chicken salad I've had. Why? Because the salad was mixed with shredded cheddar cheese. I was intrigued but worried that it would taste weird. It didn't. It was awesome, and it was so filling that I could only eat half of it. We both got fries with our sandwiches and they were also really good. The food here is like higher quality bar food. A little greasy, but good enough to eat without any alcohol involved. But it really was a great compliment to the beers we were drinking. The restroom here was alright, pretty clean and big enough and well stocked. As for the cleanliness of the restaurant, it was fine. Nothing was messy and although our server looked a bit disheveled, it was a tidy little place. And I should mention that while our server was pretty available, he was slightly standoffish. Not exactly the friendliest. But we didn't really mind. We had enough beer and food to keep us occupied. Our bill was a little high due to all the beers. It was obvious we weren't here during any happy hour prices. I think that maybe next time we'll aim for happy hour since the food prices weren't bad, but the beers can really make the bill climb. I had to get a box for my food and took it home. Yes, when I ate it for lunch the next day, it was still delicious. But then again, being a cold sandwich, I figured it would be. We liked Mac's a lot and will definitely be back. I can't wait to give some of the other items on the menu a try, especially one of the burgers for myself after seeing everyone else's comments about them. If you're in the mood for a cozy little pub and want some beer and good food, this is a good spot for it!

I'm not a fan of Mac's food, but then again, I'm a vegetarian and their menu is not rife with veggie options. The veggie club sandwich is not bad, and their fries are excellent, particulary if ask for a side of beer cheese. Everything else I've eaten there was disappointing, but again, take that as coming from someone who's never had the burgers everyone else raves about. It's a nice chill atmosphere though; you'll see fewer hipsters here than in many of the other bars and restaurants in the Short North. Decor is nothing special, but it's comfortable and pleasant. Service is adequate to good. Three stars as a good, lowkey, place to grab a drink or two, but I'd pass on dinner.

I happened up here during the tail end of the Pride parade, as two friends and I wanted to get out of the rain. It was pretty busy, and I couldn't locate a host, so we just seated ourselves at the first open table. The table was still wet, clearly had not been wiped down. I had a bad feeling I was in for a terrible time. Thankfully, I was wrong! After about 5 minutes, a server got our drink orders, which were delivered nearly instantly. Same with our food. We got jalapeño poppers (searing hot), a burger, and 2 salads between us. All of it was exactly what we wanted and how we wanted it. I subtracted a star because the first impression was very not good. I understand they were busy, but I'm sure many people would've gotten up and walked out in the first 5 minutes.

Mac's is a small, unassuming restaurant and bar, but it is a solid choice for Short North casual dining. Like many of the old-school Short North spaces, it is long and narrow, with plenty of exposed brick and wood. Bar in the center and seating wherever a chair or booth can be had, and Mac's can go from a few tables to packed in minutes. We've always had consistent and efficient service, which is a testament to their ability to adapt to customer demand. This trip was a lunchtime jaunt before the Doo-Dah parade on July 4, and we showed up right at opening. Beers and Scotch eggs for lunch? Yes, please. If you've never had a Scotch egg (and you like your breakfast food compact and fried), you're in for a real treat at Mac's. A hard-boiled egg encased in pork sausage and deep fried - served with a creamy sauce - it's a game changer. They have lots of other appetizers to choose from, including a selection of wings, jalapeno poppers and sweet potato waffle fries. The waffle fries are definitely a good choice if you find sweet potato fries a bit mushy - the waffle cut gives more surface area to crisp up. Mac's does have its fair share of other Pub-style foods, like fish and chips, Shepherd's pie, and Guinness stew, plus a variety of sandwiches - the giant Mac burger is popular, as well as their turkey Reuben. Vegetarian options are plentiful as well - two kinds of sandwiches, big salads, etc. And, better yet - they don't look askance at you for a) ordering vegetarian and/or b) not ordering alcohol. Very laid-back place, we make time for Mac's.

Mac's is where it's at. So many things to choose from, I can't wait to try more things. I've gotten the kraut balls on a few different occasions and they are SO good. Can't go wrong with the chicken fingers or wedge salad. Very excited to try the egg and a burger. Will be back.. FoReVeR

There are certain places that, under the right conditions, fit the bill like no other. If you are strolling through the Short North and find yourself in need of top notch pub food and a nice micro or regional draft to wash it down with, there is nothing in that part of town that is Mac's. This is a great happy hour joint, as it is a bar, first and foremost, and one of the very few places in Columbus you can find a cellar Guinness. If you are in the mood to extend your happy hour, they offer a decent range of straight up pub food. Try the Scotch Egg and Cottage Pie at least once, and their fish and chips is always a solid choice. Service is casual and friendly, not neglectful or hovering. This place holds a special place in my heart because both my brother and dear friend Mollie served here back in the day. So no matter where you might be on the way to in the Short North, Mac's is the perfect standby.

Stopped in Mac's for late night drinks and food after walking around the Gallery Hop in the Short North. Their drink prices are very reasonable - $3.50 for a well drink - and that's their standard rate....at least for their cheapest whiskey. We had the wedge salad and the nachos. The nachos blew the salad out of the park. One thing I do want to mention is that our server was superb. We came in around 10pm and he was very attentive to our needs - gave us waters right away, took our drink orders, made suggestions...I don't know, it was just refreshing to have great service so late, especially since we were exhausted from walking around the Gallery Hop, playing the "Wanna eat here? How about here? Let's walk a little further" game for God know how long.

Mac's is a funny little place with one of the BEST Happy Hours in the area. Its very long (4-8 I think most days) and VERY cheap. I love it. Its not a bad bar to eat at either. The scotch egg appetizer is a unique absolute must, and I am a bug fan of the spicy bbq wings! Not very spicy but great flavor. Cant wait to go back and try some more things!!

I always looked forward to coming here. It was my favorite restaurant. Things have changed. The nachos are totally different and have some cheap cheese sauce. They were terrible. Also, used to love the chicken sandwich. Now it is just chicken tenders with lettuce and tomatoes on a bun. I once loved this place. I will never be back. I can't emphasize enough how mad I am about this place going downhill.

An oasis of peace in an area of town that is increasingly filled with overdressed nouveau rich and/or hipsters. Here, you can always find a spot at the bar or a table. The happy hour specials are decent and the stalwart menu favorites are always good (e.g. Scotch egg!!!). On a recent visit, friends proclaimed the veggie burger, chicken shawarma, and sweet potato waffle fries as excellent. Service is spotty, but really, you shouldn't be coming to a dive-ish bar for good service. In sum, a very decent watering hole.

Great happy hour and bar food joint!! This place is a rough around the edges place with a happy hour that let me spend $1.95 for a whiskey&diet. I am a happy camper with that! It's also longer than most happy hours from 4-8pm Mon-Fri!! The food here is pretty standard bar food but they do it decently well. The wings are good and if you've never had a scotch egg... You've got to go here and try one!

Food was okay. Went there an go the half price chicken wings and a couple beers. Pro: good for late hang out Con: server checks you out 6 times prior writing this review. It is okay to check customer one or twice after we finished eating. But checking us out 6 times after we finished is too extreme!!

Th Happy Hour was amazing!! Our host, Benny, took good care of us as he recommended several appetizers to try as first-timers. You cannot leave with trying the Scotch Egg. (Lord, Bless my arteries) The medium wings were terrific as well. We will DEFINITELY be back!

We stopped in for a few drinks before a concert one night simply because we had a guy named "Max" with us, so we thought "Max/Mac...it just makes sense". We claimed one of the old school round oak tables and pulled up a chair for our group of 5. The server quickly came over and told us the happy hour specials (including a super cheap draft list!). We had a great time toasting to random things and laughing the entire time we were there. It was a laid back, dive-vibe type of place that set the stage for a fun filled few rounds of drinks before our concert. With the right group of friends, I'll go back for sure!!

This used to be my favorite happy hour In the short north, but they've gotten rid of their food specials for happy hour. I'm really disappointed and this won't be my go to happy hour spot anymore.

Went last night with a couple of friends around 9pm. They weren't busy but the service was very slow and the food (wings and a few sides) took 25 minutes. Normally I love coming here but last night was definitely a miss. But the Scotch Egg is so amazing I know I'll be back, with hopefully better service.

What happened to mac's it use to be good. Went there tonight with a party of 8, when we were seated there were only a few tables sat and 3 at the bar. We placed our drink order and 20 min later the few alcoholic beverages came out before my ice tea and one others water. We ordered 15 min later another table was seated next to us. With in 20 min their food was out and only 2 people at our table has received their appetizers. Another 3 top was seated but after 15 min of no one waiting on them they left. Finally our food started showing up but just 2 at a time. People were finished with their food when the last person at our table received theirs. One person at our table got a burger that was only half cooked. Three people had onion rings as a side two had large amounts but one person only had 4 rings and came out cold. I had ordered a Ruben which only had about 2 oz of really tough meat. Also the server dropped off a plate of chicken wings at our table that belonged to the table next to us. After experiencing this we all will never be back.

First off, I give Mac's tater tots 5-stars! You get a big ol' heaping basket for just a few bucks. This is the reason I go to Mac's. They serve food late-night and usually have a pretty good beer selection as well (though they have been out of two hearted the last few times I've been). Besides the tots, it's just kind of meh for me. The service is hit-or-miss; from what I know from friends who have worked here, the management is pretty shoddy, which causes a pretty high turnover rate, so that makes sense. The bartenders are fairly friendly for the most part though, and you can usually get a table when you need one. It's also a great place to go if you have a big group, from my experience. When there is a "big" game on, whatever the sport it seems, the place can get pretty loud, but overall it's pretty relaxed besides super busy weekend nights. All in all, Mac's keeps me coming back as a spot for late night grub, but it's nothing to write home about.

Food 2.5 stars, Beer/drinks 4 stars. They have pretty solid fish and chips, and average bar food. It's in a nice location - short north is a nice place to walk around and visit many places. They have a pretty good beer selection and reasonable prices. Nothing flashy here, but not a bad place to hangout.

I just had lunch with friends there and ordered the Cottage Pie. It was one of the worst things I have ever had at a restaurant. One the waitress noticed that I had not eaten it and asked about it I told her that it was very bad. After offering to give me something else which I declined mainly due to the time constraints , they " discounted" my meal instead of taking off that poor excuse for food. I gladly paid it but will never eat there again. Keep up the great customer service!

I like Mac's n' all, but I feel it's been something that people let slide "just because it's Mac's." I've been here and had great service, and I've had deplorable service. I've had my Guinness poured perfectly, and I've been served a priest's collar. The food - is good. The scotch egg isn't bad (mainly, I think it's the sauce people love), nor the Shepard's pie. I know we've ordered a few other items, but to hell if I can remember them. The beer selection isn't bad, and the staff seems to have improved over the past year, but I suppose the lack of convenient parking is why I never really think of going there when I am in the area.

I don't understand why I don't have a review of Mac's cafe yet but I'm fixing it now. I've been eating at Mac's for years and years. I have extremely fond memories of going in at lunchtime for a scotch egg and a Tetley's ale. The Tetley's is sadly no longer available, thankfully the Scotch egg is. A Scotch egg is not super complicated, Mac's serves it with diced tomatoes and a cream cheese based sauce with diced onion and (I think) dill. Somehow the combination elevates the humble egg and its fried sausage cocoon. I get the fish and chips, the portions are huge. I like the high backed booths. I like the huge piles of fries. Mac's is a great place to take friends, the environment encourages fun conversation. Very crowded on weekends. Worth the visit for the Scotch egg. Four stars.

Mac's Cafe has their share of fat laden foods. There's not much here that is not fried in some way shape or form. Very Scottish styled cooking. One of my favorites is the Scots Egg. What's that? You ask. Well, it's a hard boiled egg, packed in sausage, rolled in bread crumbs and deep fried till there's a hard "shell" around it. Served with some dill sauce on the side. It's horrible for your arteries but flavor wise? It's awesome! It's kind of like breakfast in a ball. I wouldn't tell you to eat it every day, but for a treat for the senses? Sure, why not? Also great is their chili ( spicy, spicy, spicy ), hot wings ( spicy, spicy, spicy ), burgers, chicken sandwich, fish sandwich, pretty much everything. Plus if you are looking for fries, their sandwiches are served with a mega portion piled on top. Shepard's Pie and Forfriar Bridie are for those wanting a quasi authentic taste of the home islands. They're pretty good and very filling....comfort food at it's best. A pretty good beer selection rounds out your reasons why you'd want to visit them.

Kitchen is open late 7 days a week ^-^ I work second shift and get out at 11pm so most restaurants are closed when I'm off. Luckily for me Mac's Cafe is open until 2am every night and the kitchen doesn't close until 1:30-1:45am. So last night I checked it out and the scene was mello. Ordered the Mac Burger and it was ready for me very fast. The french fries with it were bland as can be. The burger though was tasty. It had bacon and slaw on it which gave it extra crunch and juiciness (I think I made up a word). I can't say the burger stands out, but it is a great option late (I arrived at 1am so not much to choose from). Will have to try more of their menu in the future on those late nights

Scotch Eggs. That's all that matters. Addicting. Food is always great and huge portions. The kraut balls are the best I've tried in the city. The sweet potato fries are fantastic. The scotch egg has my heart. Good beer selection. Service is hit or miss. Sometimes it's great and sometimes it sucks. Also this place is open late so it's a great alternative to pizza after hours.

Yay! I love Mac's! For being in the Short North, you'll be hard pressed to find a better happy hour. Half price drinks and apps until 8 AND all day Sunday. This includes my favorite fuel for silly nights, Magic Hat #9 (drafts only $2.50 during happy hour!). The food is okay, but really - just okay. The Scotch Egg is a good time, as are the slathered-in-butter soft pretzels. The wedge salad is huge/good and the chicken salad croissant sandwich & tots are usually a win. One weird thing is that they only play music from the jukebox. It's not really noticeable until you realize nothing is playing and then it can get a little odd. But usually someone will step in, find a few quarters and surprise you. I've heard everything from Metal to Britney here. Don't come here expecting anything fancy. You've got your typical bar food, Pub atmosphere and laid-back patrons. And don't forget the cheap happy hour! But, if you're into that (as I am), you'll love this place.

I've been going to Mac's since I turned 21. Yeah, this is where I went to celebrate that milestone, and I have always enjoyed the place. I don't usually eat a lot here, aside from the Scotch Eggs, and those are great, one of the only spots in town to get them from aside from doing them yourself, and they are fabulous. The drink menu is pretty huge, its a bar after all. And they usually have a good selection of everything on hand. They've been out of one or two options on occasion, but hey that happens. The only thing I don't like about the place is that on a busy night seating is impossible. It's a seat yourself deal, so when you walk in you have to find a spot, and if the place is full you end up having to find a table that looks like it may leave soon, and then vulture nearby, waiting for them to pay and get out so you can sit down. There are a good number of tables, but on a Friday or Saturday night there are always more people then seats. It's just how it is, and there's really not standing room. So, show up early, and if you have a group you may end up split up. The prices are reasonable, especially for being in the middle of the short north where everyone else jacks their rates up for the heck of it. Oh, and it can get a bit loud. Regretfully with sports enthusiasts that will often buy a single drink, and them camp out at two or three tables to watch an entire game. Why those types don't go to a sports bar is beyond me. But hey, other then that its a great place to hang out!

Good food for decent prices, which is hard to come by in the short north. The service was great, its a cute little pub setting. I spent about $10 on a huge wedge salad and an oberon (with an orange, of course!). Not bad at all, I was totally expecting to spend more. If you're a hot sauce lover, try their wings with the extra hot sauce on the side. That stuff was potent (and delicious).

This place is CHEAP! We went for the famed happy hour and were the only ones there which was suprising. We shared the pretzels, warm and tasty though I'm not a fan of fake cheese dip, still great deal at $3! The onion straws was the biggest pile I have ever seen for less that $2, I prefer rings, but with a bunch of added pepper they were fine and a meal on its own! The chicken fingers descent as well, real breast not pressed meat, also $2! Lastly the fried green beans, awesome and the only veggie my son would willingly gobble up (though I think you can no longer call this a veggie) my favorite art of the meal for sure, $3 and also a huge pile! My husband had the Miko Brown Burger with bacon, cheese and egg, he said it was fine but for $9 you are better off getting a couple apps. I had the large house salad for $5, also tasty and a great deal! In all good bar food at unbeatable prices, teh service is fast and friendly, what more could you want?

I've never been to Ohio before, but business has brought me to this new, exciting, and really friendly state. My goal is to only eat local, and fresh food, and avoid chain restaurants at all costs. I didn't realize this until I started eating around, but apparently everyone really loves reubens here, which I think is fantastic! I ordered that with a side of fries, and I'm very glad I did! Was a fantastic sandwich for a pretty fair price. The service was prompt and quick, we were seated immediately (a little after lunch time) and our food came out in an efficient manner. The decor was cool and chill, felt like a pub you could just go in get some good grub, good beer and hang. I'll hopefully be able to go back again before I leave.

Now here is a PUB! I've only been to Mac's twice, but each time I have been pleased with the outcome. Mac's is not one of those bars that have music playing so loud that you can't hear your neighbor, but instead they have a jukebox with all the classics on it that play at a respectable level. The Inside of the bar feels like a typical Irish pub. several round tables laid about and one L shaped bar. The food - Dude we got the burger there, and it was huge, and delicious. Just about everything on the menu looks fantastic. I'm kind of sad I haven't been back for some time. The Brews are pretty legit as well. Mac's is the bomb.

Macs is one of my favorite hang outs in the Short North. Took my wife on one of our first dates here and convinced her that you needed to pay a quarter to use the bathroom (you don't). Anyway the best part about Macs is it's cheap and it's in the short north. Do yourself a favor and get the loaded nachos. If you come with a nice sized group, it's fun to take over the back room behind the bathrooms. It's secluded, private, and there's a pool table and golden tee... you can create an on the fly private party, except it gets pretty cold back there.

One of my favorite Sunday Funday hotspots. The drink specials are unbeatable, they have Pac Man in back, and it's right in the center of the Short North! The food is great, the bartenders are always really really nice, a great beer/drink selection. The only draw back is that it can get a little dark at times. If it had more sunlight or a patio would be even better. But beggars can't be choosers it's a great place to check out.

Great place for drinks and food if you're into Scottish/Irish food in the Short North. I used to live a block away and the service was always on point and reliably consistent.

Beers and burgers. 'Nough said. Food can be awful at times - on more than one occasion the burgers were practically raw (and I didn't order steak tartar!). Prices, though are very reasonable. Specials used to be better, but the prices are so low that it hardly matters. Get the Mac Burger with tater tots and a brew and you'll be fine.

The metered lot next to Mac's was full, and we were trying to figure out where to look next on the very busy High Street when a street spot opened right in front of Mac's. That's a sign! Summer Sunday after 6pm, so tables were full but the place wasn't packed. Long bar with stools looked like the place to be if you're social, but we sat at a comfortable 4-top. Happy Hour was still in effect, complete with half price apps and good drink specials (our UFO Pale Ale and Harpoon IPA were $2.50). Since we planned to visit a couple other bars in the area we tried to control ourselves food-wise. Tried. We started with the Sauerkraut Balls, which were interesting but not as good as I expected - too little sausage flavor, but the horseradish dipping sauce was addictive. Next I ordered a Scotch Egg and Ken got wings. The egg came cut in half, with a generous layer of sausage and a creamy herb dipping sauce. I loved that whole app. Ken's wings were good, but not as crispy as he likes (he asked for extra crispy too), and the sauce didn't stick (but you could run the wing through the sauce on the plate). All in all, a great experience. Less than $20 for three beers and three apps. Happy Hour definitely recommended!

Great Scott!! Ok really, I've just always wanted to say that and never had occasion. I'm really not even sure what it means, but Mac's is a Scottish pub so just roll with it and we'll all have some fun here. Never been to a Scottish pub? Wuhelllll, listen here, lassie! You're going to want to go very hungry cuz the Scots prefer their plates on the big and hearty side. The signature item, the Scotch egg, is hard-boiled and wrapped in sausage, deep-fried, and served with a tangy sauce that's sure to edge you into cardiac arrest. If old-fashioned cholesterol isn't your thing, they also make a mean fish & chips and a burger that rivals Thurman's in diameter. The daily specials are always noteworthy and often a traditional British somethingoranother. This is not the best place to go if you're health-conscious or vegetarian, but the salads are decent if you're worried about being stranded in a sea of carnivorous grease. Also keeping in true Scottish (and/or Irish) fashion, the beers are always flowing at Mac's. They have a great variety that changes seasonally and includes room-temperature Guinness for the die-hard beer snobs in your group. Being a pub it can get kinda loud, especially later into the evening, but after enough rounds of drinks who cares what your friends are saying anyway?

Okay burger but surely there has to be a better burger joint than Mac's on this street. I had the Mac burger which came with Swiss cheese, coleslaw and bacon. It was hard to eat. My beer was better than the burger. I had a pint of Bell's Brewery's Two Hearted Ale. This IPA was very hoppy and just what I needed after running the Columbus marathon.

If the "scotch egg" still mystifies you, you could do worse than to grab a counter seat at Mac's Cafe and try one. A pub style restaurant that brings high-quality food to the Short North with a scottish flare, Mac's has become a lunch-time tradition for many short north workers. Most Short North restaurants offer a limited set of possibilities.... seafood or steak, American or Italian, but at Mac's, their American/Scotch menu forces you to choose whether or not you want to stay American, go full on Scottish, or mix between the two. While it may be what most consider a "simple" food, one of my favorites is chicken salad sandwiches. Ive been eating at Mac's Cafe for years, and Mac's by far is the BEST chicken salad sandwich I've EVER had.... and I keep coming back for more. A generous helping of their yummy chicken salad piled onto an over-sized croissant and topped with tomato, sprouts, and lettuce. Simple? Yep! Simply delicious. You almost have to cut it and eat it with a fork! Next time you're in the Short North for lunch.... I highly recommend you stop by Mac's Cafe. You won't be sorry you did.

Mac's for the win!! Went to Mac's Thursday night after trying to go to the Rossi for the third time with no avail. I am always too hungry to wait over a half hour for a burger. So, me and my main squeeze took a stroll down High St. not sure where to stop. We passed Mac's and took a look at the window menu. My bf spotted the tuna melt and he was sold. I went along and was soo glad I did! We grabbed a funny shaped high top by the bar and our waiter came by in seconds. He was a really nice guy and great at his job. Prompt, friendly, efficient, and unobtrusive. Loved it. My boyfriend orders the tuna melt, of course and I get the Mac burger, of course. I love getting house specialty burgers. This one was bacon, Swiss, and cole slaw. A great combo, surprisingly. AND we both got TOTS!! Anyway, the food came out pretty quick and the portions were huge. The plate was mounded with TOTS! My favorite side dish ever! Mac's does it right. Crispy on the outside, melty on the inside. Heaven! The boyfriend was pleased with his tuna melt and ate the whole thing (that's a good sign). My burger was really great! It was perfectly cooked to medium well (a hard thing to master) perfectly juicy with the tiniest hint of light pink. It had great flavor and was seasoned well. The cole slaw acted like mayonnaise and lettuce combined, and the bacon was crispy, flavorful, and not fatty. I didn't even miss the fact I didn't get to go to Rossi and my burger was so tasty, maybe I don't even want to go there anymore. Just give me my Mac burger and tots please! The prices were excellent; our two meals and two NA drinks were less than $20. All the menu prices were really reasonable. They also had a hamburger special for $5. On another note, they had a pool table hidden in the way back side by the bath rooms, kind of a cool billiard set up. AND the bathrooms, while old, were SPOTLESS! I almost considered sitting on the seat, almost.

My friends seem to like Mac's more than I do. It seems like it is missing a little something--I'm just not sure what. I've gone here for happy hour and it's usually pretty empty, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I like the overall feel of the place The drink specials are good, so that's a plus. Unfortunately, the happy hour food isn't very good at all. One time I went and got the medium wings, they had barely any flavor to them. So, the next time I went I got the hotter flavor--those were unbearably spicy to the point I could only eat a couple. And I'm very conditioned to spicy food. I'd personally advise to avoid the happy hour specials and just order from the regular menu. Their sandwiches and things are pretty good. A good thing about Mac's is this back room that they have. We wanted to have a small going away party for a friend of mine and all we had to do was call and ask them if we could use the room. They had no problem with it, and it was free. There was pop-a-shot and pool back there, so it was a pretty good set up. After hours this place is good for drinks and stuff too. Mac's really only falls short on happy hour food, everything else is pretty A-OK.

Now I do not drink so this is all based on the food and the all around atmosphere. I have been here a few times in the past and I have never really been a fan, first walk into a smell that is slightly mildew and a sewage mixture. Sit down at a table, it is around 11:30pm and the place has hardly anyone there. Now why did it take till my friend got up too grab a menu for someone to realize we were sitting there? Now the menu is eh, not much to choose from. So I got myself the grilled cheese sandwich and some mac and cheese. It was cool that with the grilled cheese you could pick from many different cheeses and add multiples. It was not cool that my grilled cheese came out charcoal ed. I did not return it I guess that is my fault there, I felt that I would be a nuisance if I had asked. The grilled cheese in general was kind of boring and really a weak excuse of a grilled cheese. Than I was excited for my mac and cheese, and it not only had no flavor and I had to smother it in ketchup and pepper for some kind of taste. After that just the mushiness of the mac and cheese was not pleasant, and tasted like it was sitting under a buffet hot lamp all day long. I will most likely never go back, I am just glad my friend was buying my dinner or I would be even more upset.

The food is plentiful, though not very well seasoned. The staff is friendly. The beer is cheap. Good enough for three stars in my book. The fish and chips looked good, and there were enough chips to feed an army. I went with the meat pie. Kind of a pot roast with a pastry on top. Lots of it, and like alluded to, I kept the salt shaker in my left hand.
