We tried this place after ABC 6/FOX 28's Bill Kelley and Bob Kendrick rated it their top burger in Columbus. Wow, they couldn't have been more wrong. The place was dark, flies were buzzing around us, and the barmaid was very unfriendly and I'll even say rude (seemed like she was miserable in her job!). The burger was just OK, not terrible but definitely not good enough to return. Not a fan.

The four of us each tried the cheeseburgers! I had mine with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion! Also has a side of tater tots! The burger was delicious! The bun was perfect because it wasn't a bun that was thick with bread! The burger held together very well! Server was speedy and polite! We definitely will be back! Think I'll try the fried bologna sandwich with onion rings when I go back and my spouse the cheeseburger so that way we can try something new there

I'm prone to getting behind a small divey place with great food. But it's not a restaurant. it's a bar that serves food. A restaurant would be on top of their game to keep up with the orders. Twice I've called for a carryout and each time have been told to call back because they don't know how long it will be before they can get to my order. (Last time, told - there are 10 people ahead of you that we haven't served yet.) Tell me it's a hour, 90 minutes, whatever - take my order- and when I show up, have my food ready. What sense does it make to trade off whatever good will they've gained from word of mouth advertising and publicity by not even taking the order. That's just stupid. If they could fix that they'd really be doing something. A good problem to have I guess. I'm glad they're busy. And I don't desire to run otherwise hard working people into the ground - but if you've heard the hype- you need to know that the service is really slow to non-existent when they get backed up. Now, when you're on deck or it's your turn they couldn't be nicer. They really are friendly - but the workflow needs fixed. The hamburger is okay...not great but you won't go away hungry for sure. But far from anything to get overly excited about.

I'm not sure how I haven't written a review for Johnnie's yet! Johnnie's is a small, divey joint. If you blink, you could miss it! The seating is limited, so it doesn't take much to get a little crowded. Johnnie's has a limited menu, and are known for their burgers. The burgers are pretty damn big, and made to order however you want it. They don't come with anything, but if you need something else, the sides are all pretty good. I prefer the onion rings! I've also tried the roast beef sandwich which is served with real horseradish, and it's really good as well. It's actually been awhile since I've been...going to need to plan to get back soon!

Cheap food. Cheap drinks. Small space. Dive bar. That is what you need to know about this place. The burgers are delicious and huge. There are no menus because you have about 4 options to choose from. Everyone we have ever taken there has loved it. Some of the best burgers in town! Short and simple review for a small and simple place!

  • Drew D.

The cheeseburger I ate was huge and delicious. The service was quick. It's a hole in the wall, dive type of place. There are great happy hour specials here.

  • Lauren G.

Certainly the dive-iest dive I've ever dived in, but great happy hour specials ($1.50 for Yuengling draft in a frosted glass) and yummy burgers. I can only imagine that back when smoking was allowed in bars this place used to have a 10" thick ceiling of thick cigarette haze, but there's no real trace of it left, which shocks and amazes me. (And for the record, regular price Yuengling draft is only $4!) Burger with a side only $7.

  • Hua R.

Great burger joint on the other side of the tracks! literally.. this dive is referred to as 'Johnny on the tracks' b/c it sits just off the RR tracks. Gotta go with the Super Johnnie Burger ($6) w/ hot pepper jack cheese, side of onion rings ($2.50), and an ice cold Mich Ultra on tap ($1.50). Johnnies SuperBurger is so big it comes cut down the middle for all those small-hand mongoloids out on the westside. Delicious burger & no nonsense service, love this place!!

  • Steve C.

Nope. Lots of hype, but $7.00 for a stand-alone burger? That's gourmet level pricing for a burger that is pretty pedestrian. It seemed like a factory made patty, but maybe the meat was overworked. What I got wasn't horrible, but it was a bit dry, and it left me regretting that I didn't go elsewhere. The fries are food service standards, slightly over cooked. No fresh cut potatoes here. I've got no problem with a good dive bar. I've always liked the cut of Johnny's jib, but this place might want to get over itself a little and embrace some local beers. I don't care if they want to rock one tap with Yuengling, but how about representing C-bus with some local bottles and cans? I just moved to the general area and Johnny's is in convenient spot for me, but I'm not feeling it. I really wanted to love this place, and maybe it works for some people. Not this guy.

A dive bar to surely ask to your list. Beer that rivals college prices ($3 dom imports $2 domestics during happy hour 5;00-7:00 pm everyday), solid bar food. Burger piled high with all the fixings and piping hot jalapeño poppers are worth a try. I went here in search of a solid no frills burger, and voila! I got one. Nothing like eating a burger to the slow jams of trains rambling past the bar, in the company of the locals. The menu is small--burgers, fried bologna, fish baskets--and all fried favorites--mozz sticks, French fries, fried mushrooms. No worries- the cooks are good at what they do.

Simple menu. Good food. Throwback to the blue collar taverns. Locally owned not cookie cutter corporate place. Cheap booze on the railroad tracks.

Well - the husband wanted to try this local yolkal out per the reviews and sure as it reflects - burgers are on point! The ambiance is casual all the way and the place is tiny and dark- but don't let that detour you from giving it a try! We had burgers, onion rings, and the fried zucchini- all exceeded our expectations!

  • Monty B.

Big, simple but tasty burgers. My only complaint is they cook the patty a little too much to the point where it's somewhat dry. I'm usually a medium well to well done type of person, but even this was a little too well for me.

Not much to look at from the outside.. But this is a nice working class bar with good burgers and a variety of deep fried side items. Staff was really friendly and attentive. I liked the atmosphere (e.g., furnace sits in plain view rather than in a closet). While not posh, the place is clean. Based on some reviews, I hoped the burgers were going to be among the best I've ever had. Although they didn't meet my lofty expectations, the burgers were pretty good. What kept me from thinking the burgers were the best of the best? In my opinion, my burger was just a bit over done (and perhaps a bit salty). I gather all burgers are cooked to the same level of doneness - well done. Also, beer not quite as cold as I'd like. I wouldn't object to returning for more burgers at some point.

We came here on the night that Johnnie's was being featured live on the Channel 10 news. It was on this very night where we got to learn the secret ingredient for Johnnie's burgers: grease. As Dom showed us, they literally pour grease over these babies. What happens to the grease that's cooked from the burger? Put that stuff right back on the burger. What happens to the grease that's cooked from the burger next door? Toss it on! What about the grease from Johnnie's face? .... well, everything seemed sanitary enough... Let's just put it this way: in the war for your tastebuds, Johnnie's follows the no-grease-left-behind mantra. This diner isn't for the faint of heart. Literally. If you have a medically diagnosed faint heart you probably want to think twice. So did all the grease pay off? Not bad. Best burger in Columbus? I'm not sure about that. I'm a big fan of Thurman's. One piece of advice: if I were to come back again, I'd make sure to ask for the burger to be medium or medium-well. It was a little too cooked for my tastes. Like most Yelpers I had to try this very small dive out and chow down one of their famous burgers. Yes, a place I would have not chosen to eat out from the looks of the exterior (and interior.) Keep driving Matt, keep driving. Burger was good, hot, juicy and fresh. Yuengling's all they had on tap; mostly domestic bottles. The server kept bringing them even though we didn't order them. We kinda assumed it was because it was very busy and they were on the house for waiting? No-we were charged. I think they jacked their prices after "becoming famous," which makes me happy for them but sad for the locals who frequent this place. Onion rings were really good (enough to split between two.) Food's good, server's friendly but Johnnie's is not worth a road trip. Four stars because it's a hot burger close to work that's tastier than Wendy's.

The food was great here. The burger was a little bit dry. The waiters there are very friendly and passionate. All in all it is a great place to go.

This is America Baby. I'm not kidding, please do yourself a favor and drive to Johnnie's drive there and order a fresh seared, tasty flat topped burger that you will enjoy with every bite, and want to come back for more and more. I have driven by this dive a hundred times before and never once thought that I should stop in, until today. You walk up after parking your car and realize that you are in close proximity to railroad tracks, in a historic neighborhood that has seen far better days. You walk in through a narrow door. Off to the left you see a phone booth ,I didn't even know that phone booths still existed? My friend and I walked up to the bar and took a seat, we were greated with a warm smile and asked if we would like to have something to drink. The beer selection here is American, PBR in the bottles, Schlitz, ( I didn't even know they they still made that) and some imports like Labatt Blue, and Cornoa. They have one tap, today and it was filled with America's oldest brewery, Yeungling, and for a 1.50 you can't really beat that price. So I ordered one. The walls are filled with Americana, and posters of different types, and made me feel at home, This bar looks like it was plucked straight from a steel town or near a factory and placed in Columbus, but i like that, I felt at home, and I enjoyed my burger and I enjoyed my beers. There isn't much on the menu that is handwritten on a chalk board above the bar, but just get the burger. You have a choice of cheese, I went with Cheddar, and your toppings such as mushrooms, and bacon, fresh cold onion, pickle, and mayo. The fries and onion rings aren't really worth it, but thats okay, they serve the burger naked, with out mayo, or ketchup, but thats okay they bring it to you in bottles. The burger had a wonderful, had a great char to it from being cooked on the flat top, and they only offer it well done, which is okay plenty of flavor, and plenty of peppery goodness. I don't need a suace or anything else to make this burger. good. priced at 6.50 you really can't beat this. Five Guys in terms of yummyness might have just been replaced, and I can't beleive I am saying that. Its so good, I'm going back . for another round of burgery goodness This is a place that I could find my self at a lot, and I'm glad I've stopped by, yo should as well, don't let the outside fool you, just step in and let the food do the talking.

Winter's night. Dark. Hungry. Warm atmosphere, cold beer. Burger hits the spot--tasty, not too fancy. I'll come again. You should too!

Thanks to reviews made here and elsewhere, I gave Johnnie's Tavern a try for a late lunch today -- and it lived up to the hype. As many have mentioned, the menu is small, though the drawing card is the cheeseburger. It's a bold statement to use the term "superburger" on your sign, but it was a tasty burger. The fries were of the skinnier cut variety, not steak fries like I would have preferred, but they tasted good. And, yes, there is just one beer on tap: Yuengling, which I ordered happily since I'm a fan of it. Mine came served in a frosty mug and hit the spot on an 80°+ day. Only one waitress/bartender was working, but the service was great. An older couple who arrived about 2:40 p.m. learned some bad news: the cook had gone on a break apparently right after he fixed my meal. Happy Hour is M-F from 3-7, so you might want to avoid arriving in that last half-hour prior to it if you're planning on having a meal. As others have noted, there is no pool table in there now, but there is a golf video game in the back corner. By the front is a Touchtunes jukebox that one of the people by the bar kept feeding money into, playing country artist covers of rock songs. Somehow that seemed fitting. This experience is one of the reasons why I love Yelp. As a newcomer to Columbus, I might have never ended up at Johnnie's Tavern despite living nearby if I had judged the place solely by its exterior. I recommend giving it a visit if you find yourself in the area.

Not a bad burger. The ingredients were fresh... the burger was a little dry but it had decent flavor. I like it way more than 5 guys. I would say it should cost $5 for the burger and not $7. I'd be more eager to go back if they lowered the price. You also have to pay extra for any side items. The place is small but they keep it pretty clean. The staff is on the ball and friendly. Don't let the outside deter you, you might like their burgers even more than me. To each his own... or her own in this case. ;)

I've driven past this place 7,244 times before. On the 7,245th time, I decided it's time to go in. The place? It's kinda sketchy on the outside, right next to the railroad tracks. The old sign by the road proclaims "SUPERBURGER". The parking lot is not paved, just gravel. Several pick up trucks sit in the back lot. Small town diner kind of place. Several blue collar, beer drinking, large, middle aged, white men sit at the bar. So far, so good. The food? Superburger indeed! It's a big a$$ juicy burger thankfully cut in half because you won't be able to eat it all. A generous side of tots done to a crispy crunchy awesome goodness and the beer of your choice for a super low price. I ate half of my lunch there, ate half later so I got two meals for $12 and was plenty full both times. Bartender lady was nice with just the right amount of check backs. Good casual place to get some lunch and hang out. Go there and see what I mean.

The food is amazing my only complaint is during lunch time they usually have one worker. One time when my family and I went our waitress was rude, she blamed her rudeness on the fact that she was busy and the only one working. She was pushy and we felt rushed. I recommend going when they aren't so busy

Boy, this place has a reputation- and lives up to it. I had heard about it for years, and seen the reviews on here, but it's just too far out of my way to stop by. However, I was headed down McKinley to get some car parts (that turned out to not be what was needed, but anyway...) and realized I'd be close to Johnnie's, so I stopped. Sure glad I did. It's a small place, and a very cozy one. I felt like a regular even though they didn't know me. And the way regulars are treated, even newbies, is relaxing. Very friendly service, very informal. The people next to me asked if the tomatoes were fresh, and were slightly (good-naturedly) disappointed when told they were from the store. A few minutes later, the waitress offered to get some from her garden. Seriously. I had a cheeseburger- you have to, don't you?- and onion rings. The onion rings were awesome. The burger was damn good. Best ever? I've had some good ones. Let's say this is in the top 5. But, really, practically perfect for a diner burger. Big, meaty, tasty, with fresh toppings and a good bun. Pop was served in a can, but with a frosty ice-filled glass. I didn't want to leave, and will try to find a way to get back soon.

I'm willing to give them a pass for their salty service. The place was pretty busy with one lady working the entire place; bar and restaurant. That said, the food was pretty so-so compared to the reviews I've read. We started with fried ravioli. I was born and raised in the St. Louis area so I know my toasted ravioli (yep, that's what we call it), and this stuff was garbage. The cheese inside tasted like tangy yogurt, and the raviolis were fried until they were burnt to a crisp. They basically fell apart when you touched them they were so soaked with grease. The burger was meh. Very thick, and a good size for $6. Good bun too, and it comes cut in half which was, uh, whatever. It was clearly hand packed, which is usually a good thing, but here, it was so overly packed that it just made for a dry, dense burger. The meat was cooked to a very-well-done state, which also made it fairly dry. The fries were the winner. Tasted like state fair fries or something. Super hot and crispy. Probably fried in peanut oil if I had to guess. Overall, not bad. Just didn't live up to the hype. Not even close.

As far as their burger's go, it's 5 star. These aren't your pre-made, frozen patties. I'd say for just a regular burger, this place is even with Thurman's or any other well-known burger joint. I think this place has been there since the 40's. A place doesn't last that long if they aren't doing something right. I can't really comment on their other food because I haven't personally tried it. It does look and smell good. The reason I couldn't give them a 5 star is due to service. I think this place has their regulars and friends and if you're not one of them then you kind of don't belong. We went there with a small group for my Mom's birthday a couple years ago. Maybe 10 of us. Which is a lot for this tiny place. But, everyone was eating, drinking and spending money the entire time. When my Mom went up to pay the bill the person behind the bar suggested we call next time if a lot of people will be coming. I'm thinking "what's the difference between our money and someone else's money?" We didn't just take up space and not order anything. The beers were coming at a steady pace. To sum it up, none of us have gone back. I don't care how good your food is, this was BS. And it wasn't the first time we felt this way. We went around Halloween time once. Well, we were told they were going to have a Halloween Party and we couldn't be in there very long. WTF? Is this not a restaurant/bar? This is what I mean when I say that if you're not a regular then they just want to rush you out the door or make you feel like you don't belong/shouldn't be there.

An update to correct some recent reviews: There's no pool table, and their beer-on-tap selection consists of Yuengling. Just Yuengling. All the rest of the good stuff....well, to quote Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles, "It's true, it's true!" If you find a friendlier local watering hole-- especially to new drop-ins--let me and everybody else with a Greyhound Bus connection to Columbus know. Immediately. Here's my only mild criticism: There's only a dozen spots at the bar, 3 booths, and about 6 tables (depends on configuration). And, it's a small room. So, don't expect wide open spaces, pardner. And, get there early during happy hour (M-F 2:45-6:45, non-Johnnie's time). Or, stand.

First - don't be intimidated when you see it from the outside...as it looks like a place Tony Soprano would bring his crew. Second- don't expect many menu choices...all the options are listed on a 3 x 5 card. But the burgers are among the best in town, the drinks are very cheap and the owners/staff are fantastic. One of my go to hang out places. Awesome every time.

Having grown up with grandparents in Akron, Johnnie's Tavern feels like a bar that somehow got uprooted from next to a steel mill - and that's a good thing. Brick and cinderblock walls, wood tables, a dark, high bar. You walk in and there's still an honest to god Ohio Bell pay phone right next to the door. When you sit down, the bartender / waitress checks on how you're doing, asks what you're interested in, and bustles (that's the only word for it - she honestly bustles) through the bar checking in on newbies and regulars alike. A beer comes in the bottle with an ice cold frosty mug (out of a huge old freezer that the bartender semi-regularly dumps extra ice into), and of course I'm going to talk about the "Super" burger that's advertised right on the sign. It's big - thick, without being too greasy, melted cheese, and a great satisfying crunch from nice cold lettuce and tomato. I went with the onion rings and found them OK, but not exceptional - I've heard I should get the fries next time, so I'll keep that in mind. Is it the best burger in Columbus? I'm honestly not sure, but I think they're certainly part of the conversation - and I have to admit that next time I go back, it's going to be a tough decision between getting another one, or going for the fried bologna sandwich.

Freakin awesome !!!! What a hamburger. Juicy, cheesy, & good price. There are few things to know before going there: This is a dive bar and small space. You are not serve menu or silverware. There are about 7 items to order from. Also if you order pop, it will come in a can and a frosted mug. The fries/onion rings/etc come seperate. Honestly the burger is so big you almost dont need the sides/ if you want something, recommend you share with someone else. The service is good. One main gal, very nice and fast. This is a hidden gem.

From the reviews, I admit I had high expectations. The burgers are huge but don't taste any better than others I've had. The only beer they have on tap is Yuengling, anything else comes in a bottle. The service kind of sucked but I think that was more because there were 2 waitresses handling everything and one was new. Can easily understand that. Overall was a good place if you're nearby but not worth going out of the way for

Big bangin' burgers, baby! The rumors were true. The latest Columbus Dive Bar Tour stopped at Johnnie's Tavern (not to be confused with my beloved Johnnie's in Grandview) and first impressions were slightly ... divey. Yep,we're talkin' railroad tracks, pickup trucks, and bars on the windows. First of all, dive bar - sorta. Diner - more like it. This *bar* had food - and great food at that! They only had one beer on tap: Michelob, oh yea! And your general selection of domestic bottles. There was a menu of about six appetizers (mini corn dogs rocked my world) and five entrees (cheeseburger, sammies & a chili dog - and new addition the fish!) I got the cheeseburger, and let's just say it absolutely needed to be cut in half to be consumed (a nice touch on their part) and MADE myself only eat half in fear of looking like a hog. The bun was toasted, the patty was juicy, and the cheese was perfectly melted. Bottled beer. Burgers. BLISS.

Johnnie's Tavern - Ahhh yeah. Love this place. Bonus: there's a pool table. It looks like one of those places that will end up surviving the apocalypse. The door creaks open and behold, a bona fide hole-in-the-wall that makes me smack my lips from the backyard burger smell. I picture jockeys or dudes from a fight club hanging here. There are bars like this all over Chicago; neighborhood gems that draw regulars and artful dodgers. Don't kid yourself though. You have to have an adventurous spirit and be openminded to take it all in - but only on your initial visit. You get it shortly thereafter and realize that this place harbors one of the best tasting burgers in town. I haven't been there in some time. I keep trying other burgers around the city because I loves me some juicy, pink, smoky, burgers. I will be headed back very soon though since there are only a handful of places around town that make me coo with delight like this place. So this review is a recall, which makes it all the more pertinent. That large, charcoal-y slab, tucked in a fresh Kaiser, topped with beefsteak tomato, iceberg lettuce and a smidge of condiments is all I need in any good burger. Note. I've also heard that the roast beef is rockin too, but I can't not order a burger every time I go. The bartenders are friendly as hell. CNN is usually playing on one TV and sports on the other. I love jumping up and playing some mean pool afterwards while the old-school jukebox cranks out the Stones or Hank Willams Sr. Standard beers on tap are more-than reasonably priced and the fries are those big old beef-steaky types that taste kick-ass dipped in mayonnaise. Johnnie's is in the heart of Margaritaville on Trabue, just below the railroad tracks. I would love to see if others feel their burgers stack up against such heavy hitters as Thurmans or Mohawk. Enjoy!

A friend had recently suggested this place to me so I decided to give it a try. I am glad I did. Although Johnnie's Tavern isn't much to look at (and can be somewhat intimidating), the staff (1 person) was extremely friendly as well as everyone in the place. The beer is cheap ($1.75) and the burgers are AMAZING (one of the best I've ever had.) It's a dive - but it has a lot of character. I'm glad I tried this place. I'll definitely be a loyal customer from here on out.

One of the best burgers I've had in my life. This is coming a lot from me, a guy who has yet to really find many good places to eat in Columbus when compared to the heaven that is the New York and New Jersey area back home. Just as everyone else has said, Johnnie's is a no-nonsense kind of place. It's in an ugly brick building next to train tracks. This is one of the places that keeps its mouth shut and lets its food do all the talking. The service staff is damn friendly. The guy just walks up to me, sipping his beer, and has a nice conversation about what I should get, since it was my first time my girlfriend and I were there and didn't know anything. We got a regular cheeseburger and just as I said in my first sentence: one of the best burgers I've had in my life. I've even come to realize that burgers don't need any fancy add-ons. No need for any fancy onion rings (which at Johnnie's, is awesome by the way), or sauces or some sort of gimmicky cheeses and a "Texas Burger". Just extraordinary beef cooked to perfection. I ordered mine medium. The crust on the burger gave it a small hint of a crunch after sinking my teeth into the beefiest-tasting burger I've ever had. Johnnie's is one of the best burgers I've had in my life, next to the one at White Chocolate Grill in Phoenix Arizona. I've only been there once, but I already feel like it's leagues ahead of any other restaurant in Columbus. Oh, and it's cheap too. Much cheaper than most other burger places. We all know how much more flavor a good price adds on a burger.

Wow! I have been driving by here for 7 years laughing at the Superburger sign until a friend spoke highly of this place. I have been planning to try this place out but my wife wasn't behind the idea. A friend and I had plans to hit up Griggs for Disc Golf and this place seemed close enough to finally get a chance to test the burger. It rained, so no disc golf but we decided the place was worth trying. The place is a local dive bar type place. No windows, people smoking outside the door, and cheap beer. The Michelob on tap is $1.50 and the only choice they have. Their bottles are $1.75-$2.50 depending on your choice. Don't expect any microbrews or much choice other than your basic American Beer. They do have Killian's which gave me one of my favorites. The burgers are around $6 with extra choices such as bacon or fires extra. The fries are not worth the extra money. The burgers are good and nice sized. Mine was a little drier than I like but still pretty good. Don't let the location, outside, or three older gentlemen smoking at the door turn you aside. The place is worth checking out but don't expect your hipster beer here. Also don't expect much choice other than a few sandwiches but I think the burger is the only real choice on the menu. The place gets four stars for beating initial expectations but lacks the variety of beer that makes me happy. Also the TVs are small so don't go in hopes of making it a sports bar.
