I love Apollo's. When I lived in the dorms on many a late night of studying hunger would set in. I didn't feel like walking and most places were closed, but Apollo's was always there. With a great selection of food at fantastic prices you can't go wrong. The restaurant is on the small side and some of the staff may be short with you, but a great place none the less.

I have ordered Apollo's many times over the years with very few issues (once there was meat in my veggie falafel, but they sent out a new one right away). Today I received my falafel pita and it was fried to a crisp, it was literally almost black. I called them to ask if they had recently switched the type of patties they used and the owner cut me off mid sentence before I even finished, telling me absolutely not. What that told me was that it wasn't the first complaint they had about it since he seemed to know what I was about to say. Anyway, what really disappointed me was how dismissive the owner was and him telling me I was out of luck. I wasn't trying to get anything free, I just wanted to express my thoughts that the old patties were better. After 5+ years of eating here I probably won't ever order from them again. **By the time I finished writing this I found 2 pieces of meat in my falafel pita. I found them while I was picking out the falafel since it was so terrible and just trying to eat the pita. Also, apparently the owner must have felt poorly or something since their delivery guy just walked in with another pita (which I didn't ask for). They get 2 stars for trying to correct their mistakes, but lose 3 for their phone manners and food quality.

And then there's... Apollo's! A campus institution! It survived moving when it was displaced for the South Campus Gateway and will probably be around longer than I. There's something nearly magical about Apollo's, a sort of undying loyalty it instills in its customers. I can hardly think of ordering gyros anywhere else, no matter how much more "good" people tell me they are. Apollo's has a huge menu with all sorts of pita sandwiches and variations on the staid gyro, a long menu of sides and appetizers, salads, burgers... the selection is incredible. I often order far more food than I should because I can never make up my mind. And Apollo's gets high marks for their food being almost as great when delivered as when ordered in-store. I highly recommend the spicy potato wedges- very thick cut fries with a great seasoning. Their regular french fries are a good backup plan; they get a little soggy on delivery and they're still great. There's a reason Apollo's was here before I arrived in town and will be here when I'm in the ground.

For fast Greek food, Apollo's comes out on top, especially for a place that's open late and delivers. The restaurant is small with just a handful of seats and limited standing room, but they offer a pretty full and extended menu. Late nights are going to be packed full of drunk college types looking to get some food in their stomach. All you really need to know is that there is a great Gyro, Fries and a Drink deal for only $5.00!

If you don't like Apollo's you're crazy. If you last this long on campus as a store front, you're doing something right. I've eaten a lot of gyros around town and these are my favorite. The pitas are delicious, spicy feta cheese dip is awesome and I crave their fries. Yeah the gyros aren't enormous and bulging with 90% meat like others' (which I think is gross) but if you're really into stuffing your face, order two, they're $3! Yeah the guys in there can be d!cks but they deal with drunk idiots all night long and need to run efficiently. Just don't be a dumba$$ and they're pretty nice. I'm pretty sure they only have 1 delivery driver so I'd probably avoid ordering delivery during busy hours. And they stay open til like 3 or 4 am everyday which is always awesome.

Just some average gyros. Nothing too great. However, prices are pretty good.

A friend and I discovered this place during a trip to Columbus for a show at the nearby Newport Music Hall. We had a great time! What Apollo's may lack in ambience and space they make for with low prices and delicious food. I'd wager that, when completely packed, they could get maybe 30 customers in there. Maybe... The booths are the requisite super-simple, rounded, light beige that you see in older delis and divey little places like this. Comfortable and nostalgic (to me, anyway). Nothing on the tables, either - ask for condiments and sauces. We each had the gyro meal and a few beers. Man, was it cheap! Gyro (with extra meat) was $5, which includes fries, and the beers were $2 (Yuengling). We chowed down on a good dinner and a couple of beers each for less than $10. Great deal! The employees were all friendly and easy-going (you'd have to be to work at a place like this). Apollo's probably isn't the place to take mom and dad when they come to visit you at OSU, but if you like a simple, cheap, delicious meal and a laid-back atmosphere, this is the place. I'll be back.

It took me a year and a half on campus before trying Apollo's for the first time. I ordered a regular gyro and falafel pita-both $3.50. The falafel pita was pretty mediocre; the falafel lacked good flavor and was just slightly burnt. The gyro was excellent, however, and I would put it right with Buckeye Donut's gyros which are also very good. The pita was soft, the meat was super tender, and it had decent tzatziki sauce. Overall 3.5 stars bumped up to 4 because of the cheap price ($3.50) for a pretty good-sized gyro.

  • Jacinta Y.

Got the gyro special here. First, it was a great price for a meal. Second, the employees were super nice and accommodating. Also, the flavors in the gyro really came together well. I've had gyros in the past that were too dry, but that wasn't the case here. I'd definitely make a repeat appearance.

  • Dylan H.

The food is decent, about the same as any street meat you can get in the Short North or downtown on the weekend. It's still good, especially for the price. However, the building itself is kind of scary. The place seems thrown together and, even though I'm sure they do clean things, it just looks like you're taking a huge gamble. So many people eat here, though, and I've never gotten sick. But they could do with some major remodeling.

  • Hassan H.

gyros are greesy but for 3.50 can't go wrong. 3* flavor and 5* price make these a mean 4$ or 4* fill up.

  • Critic M.

Great food and great service. They have the best gyros in Columbus for a very affordable price. I'm a big fan of their home-made Tzatziki sauce. I keep coming back here for a reason.

Don't ever do delivery from this place. It will take well over a hour sometimes 2 hours even when your just ordering gyros that take 5 minutes to make. And when it gets to you it's cold. If you eat there or do take out it tastes great! Just don't do delivery

  • Natalie B.

The worst service I have ever had in my entire life. If you're open until 2:00 am act like it. Don't pretend to call the cops on 2 customers because they're waiting for an order. You're entire business model is a joke.

    (1)
  • Paul M.

The absolute worst customer service I've ever had in my life. Apparently when you take your order to go there's no sales tax ok that's fine we never specified that our order was to go so they just put it in the computer assuming that it was. Then they started asking us to leave because we did not pay the sales tax? Lol what? After I bought fingers for 5$ and tipped them 3 they were complaining about 40 cents. They then proceeded to call the cops. Unreal refrain from this place.

This place is a gem. Ate here as an undergrad, and still grab a gyro as an alum. The tatziki is bold, veggies are fresh and the meat is juicy. Their menu is extremely extensive, but I keep it simple with the reg. gyro. If you're going Greek, go Apollos.

  • Alex P.

Love the food. Very quick deliveries. If you are craving Greek food during long nights, order away. The gyros and falafels are amazing despite being a little greasy. Some of the best Greek food I've ever had. I wouldn't suggest tipping via paypal though. I think the owners don't give the tips to their workers when I do because every time I have they always say that it wasn't on the receipt. So please do tip in cash.

  • Mark L.

Drunk or sober, this is honestly some of the best Greek food I've ever had. Maybe I'm a sucker for cheap, greasy gyros. Maybe I find the dirty, homey, divey inside and the equally homey family/staff somewhat endearing. Whatever. Their falafels are on point too. I don't care what anyone else has said about them. They smear hummus on their pita. Not many restaurants I know do that, and it truly is the magic touch. Only order takeout. The restaurant is really dirty for eating in. And delivery takes over an hour. Everything is cheap. Check your Saver and Paper GOLD magazines for a B2G1 deal. Mother effing win.

I usually have good things to say about Apollo's, but not this time. I ordered the gyro platter which it says comes with pitas, along with meat and veggies for two. I received my order, only to discover that I had received no pitas. I called them up and explained and the guy on the phone tried to tell me that I had mixed up the order and it only comes with one pita. Me: I get that, but I didn't receive any pitas... Apollo's: Ok, well do you really want me to send the driver back out for one pita? Me: Yeah...I can't eat my gyro without the pita. The customer service was just below average this time around. Although, their food is good. you have to know how to treat customers. I should receive what I paid money for, no matter the inconvenience of the delivery driver.

Still searching for a good gyro in Columbus, ideally somewhere not too far from Clintonville. Their gyros are tiny (the price matches, thankfully), the meat and tzatziki are bland, and the pita is nothing to write home about either. It's just not that good. Oh, and the fries were barely cooked and disappointing as well. If you've had legitimately flavorful and well balanced gyros before, you're going to find this underwhelming. There are clearly enough positive reviews that they don't have to try that hard. Seems like there are some positive comments about other things here besides the gyros, but I would only go back in a pinch so probably will never test.

  • Luke T.

The worst falafel I've had in Columbus. Some of the worst service too. The delivery takes FOR. EV. ER. You have to pronounce each syllable like it is it's own word like that so you understand just how serious I am. The french fries are soggy, nasty crap. On the plus side, they did build a decent, tiny patio right on High that can seat maybe 6-10 people. Nice location to sit and drink a beer in good weather, with good people watching. Smokers, take note. They also deliver beer, I think, which is a plus. No secret underage deliveries like another place I reviewed not too long ago. Sorry freshman. Moral of the story: I don't think Apollo's could possibly remain in business if they weren't across the street from a university with 60,000 students. You could probably wrap furballs from your cat in old banana peels, call it a gyro, and run a successful business on this campus.

  • Leo S.

2.5 really. A lot of my friends recommended this place. It definitely has its appeal with cheap prices, being open late, and friendly decent service, but the food itself is just not good enough. I got the 2 gyros, fries, and a drink meal for $8.50,but honesty could have had just one gyro. The gyros were small, but very filling. They have a lot of meat, but almost had enough sauce, veggies, and pita to balance it out . Unfortunately, the meat is incredibly salty and all the other things are average at best. The fries were also not very good because they were soggy and very potatoey. Apparently this place used to be a lot better, but I probably won't visit it again unless something major changes.

My first Apollo's gyro was met with a stern scolding. "Hey, if you're going to eat it here, you gotta pay the tax!!!" Granted, it was a little past midnight and we were mistakenly caught between drunken hoards of people trickling in and out. I suppose they have to lay down the law during that time of the night. Otherwise, as long as you come to Apollo's before midnight, everyone behind the counter's been friendly and accommodating. Their $5 gyro deal always satiates in a pinch. Just recently, I've had their chicken gyro and was a little disappointed in the flavor. Maybe it needed more sauce? Whether it's for a quick lunch, a drunken fourth meal, or just 'cause you've been hankering for a fast gyro, Apollo's is a decent choice.

  • Alana H.

Mmmm I've got all good to say about the food here. The gyros they serve are the best I've ever had, especially for the price! I mean $5.00 for the Gyro, Fries, and a drink...you cannot go wrong! I don't have too much to say about this place. It's small, and in an extremely weird place. The patio smells, but I wouldn't dock it a point for that because the food makes up for it. It is super delicious when you're craving a gyro. Skip the $5 footlong at Subway and get one of these babies!

Solid 5 stars. Affordable late night meal. For Five Dollars!!! Gyro, Drink, and Fries. Perfect. I go after ten so I can park at a meter and walk in. But it's not the safest part of high street. Nor is the decor inside very inviting. But man, do they make a mean gyro. It's quick, tasteful, and has the perfect texture. It's kind of a hole in the wall. It does not seem like the cleanest restaurant I've been to, but hey when the food tastes this good and is this cheap ... Why not..?! I'm definitely coming back on either a Sunday or afer 10pm so I can drop in for a quick gyro. OPA!!!!

Solid gyros in a college town atmosphere. A bit greasy on the appetizers, but service was quick and the staff was friendly.

Tried a new Greek dish for the first time - skordalia. It was awesome! My boyfriend got the $5 deal for a gyro, fries, and drink. One of the best gyros I've ever tried! This place has a lot of character to it with the signs on the walls and back of the cash register. Great great food and service but I really think they need to upgrade to a new location or renovate the place. Definitely looks crowded in the back for the cook. Vents are dated and the space inside in general is just small. I guess that's what you get on campus, but I feel like more people would at least come in to check it out if it looked nicer.

Delicious, cheap, greasy, flavorful gyros. I'm actually a big fan of their gyros and I think the meat is really tasty and has a lot of flavor. The fries are average but not bad. I tried the spicy feta dip and is was pretty terrible, but I probably should have known better than to order something like that. The pita that came with the dip was warm, soft, and delicious, though. Delivery is always pretty fast for me but I do live fairly close. Definitely the place to go to satisfy a sudden gyro craving.

Obviously not the home of the most authentic gyro, considering its location across from the quintessentially mid-American Ohio State University. But the lady preparing my Greek-inspired delicacy was especially happy when I thanked her with an emphatic "efcharisto" and explained to her that I'd learned to thank people in her language during a Catholic pilgrimage to Greece five years prior. :-) As for my gyro (ordered as take-out), it was very good, although I should have asked for tzatziki to replace the ketchup packets I ended up getting in my bag. But overall, this place gets a heartfelt "OPA!" from me!

  • R Y.

This place makes the best falafel gyros in town, just the way I like it, nice and tahini-y. I live all the way in Dublin but I make the trek and deal with annoying, gross college kids just to grab a couple of these. The tahini sauce isn't the traditional kind with lemon and garlic, I'm pretty sure it's just tahini straight up. AWESOME. If your lips aren't shiny by the time you get done eating one of these, you did something wrong. Plus they fry it up quick in flavorful (read: old) oil and the whole thing is diner-style divetastic and it's worth dealing with High street traffic and then Lane avenue traffic and then 315 traffic and then Sawmill road traffic. But only once in a while, even I have my limits.

Keep in mind that my rating is based soley on a delivery experience. I ordered a gyro platter with fries, a meatball sub and two Gatorade's: one red, one purple. I paid with my credit card and included a generous tip for the driver. Almost 1.5 hrs later, what I received was a cold, dry meatball sub, a pile of dry gyro meat surrounded by soggy lettuce, a limp Greek salad instead of fries, a yellow Gatorade (gross) and an orange Gatorade (tolerable). When I called to complain, whoever I spoke with, very politely told me that I was mistaken, that they had delivered exactly what I ordered and that was that. On the plus side, I will say that the Greek dressing that came with the salad I didn't want was very good. As was the creamy garlic sauce & pitas that came with my lame gyro platter.

  • Sarah H.

I was flat-out shocked that this place made decent falafel! I saw shitty, college-neighborhood hole-in-the-wall and totally wrote it off. which is weird, because my favorite falafel in Boston was pretty much the most hideous tiny building on the block. anyway, my biggest criticism of their falafel is that they don't put the creamy garlic sauce on it, but instead use really greasy tahini. I think without the grease factor, it would be 4-star falafel. could use some more veggies. the gyro my boyfriend had was decent, from the couple of bites I had. the grape leaves tasted good, but had a really, really mushy texture... not very appetizing. the feta-pepper dip had a bit of a bite to it, and the pita that came with it was possibly a little denser and doughier than I prefer, but tasted good and came warm. the highlight of the meal was definitely the baklava though. I kind of imagine that it was store bought baklava because there's no way they could have made this themselves. but maybe I'm wrong! maybe they have greek grandmothers in their back kitchen making sheets of filo dough. either way, it was great - I especially appreciated the nutty flavor of the filling. also, delivery. delivery is awesome. I ordered around 7pm and had food before 8, which was much needed... I just didn't feel like cooking. you know how it is.

I was absolutely horrified with the delivery time. We were told our delivery order would arrive in about 30 minutes. Over an hour and a half later, we finally received our food. The only things worse than the delivery time were the state and the portions of food we received. Most of our food was cold and anything that wasn't was barely lukewarm at best. If you are wanting lamb, do NOT order the lamb platter. It is overpriced and sold as if you will get a nice side salad with it. In reality, the "side salad" is barely a pinch of the shredded lettuce that goes into the gyros with no additional toppings or dressing. Get the much less expensive lamb gyro instead. We also ordered pita bread, and received ONE piece. Ridiculous, especially for the price. The only good things? The lamb was pretty tasty, even if it was cold. The driver who delivered our food was very polite and apologetic about the wait. All in all, I probably won't be ordering from here ever again. I spent too much money on not enough food that wasn't even delivered warm or even near within the estimated time frame. I'd get a refund if I could.

One of my Columbus staples! It started as readily available light night food when I was a student and now it is a mandatory stop whenever I am in town. A nice little hole in the wall with a few booths available. Their gyros and always warm and delicious. Wrapper perfectly in foil it makes for the perfect grab and go food. The baklava is so sticky sweet! Great food for before and after the game.

  • Andrew F.

Some of the best and most affordable drunk food in Columbus. Mind you, if you are looking for really good Greek food, go to Happy Greek, but if you are looking for a cheap greasy Gyro late night, then this is all you. Also i saw some people have had issues with delivery, maybe I've just been lucky but I've always though they were surprisingly quick.

An genuine Ohio State campus classic. Cheap, greasy, fast, and delicious any time of day. Stick around to eat and you never know what kind of a show you'll get. A really fun place to people-watch.

Apollo's is best known as "that one place that sells gyros 'til 4 in the morning", and after eating here more times than I can count, that description is as accurate as it gets. According to the menu they offer a plethora of other Greek cuisine like souvlakis, shwarmas, kababs, and salads, but have yet to witness anyone order any of these things. Judging by the frazzled staff and the meager quarters that these items are made in, I can't imagine them being any good. Luckily, the gyros here are better usually better than expected. The meat is tender and moist, the tzatziki sauce is generous and perfectly seasoned, and the pitas are tender and warm. the vegetables, mainly the tomatoes, are hit or miss, which partially explains the three-star review I'm giving them. With a dish that derives it's taste for the juxtaposition of warm meat and cool, crispy vegetables, the tomatoes are usually a drag. I usually just douse the thing in hot sauce and forget about any of the other tastes involved. Another bummer at Apollo's is the staff. I appreciate having authentic Greek food prepared for me by authentic Greek chefs, but a late night here is as close to the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld as you'll ever encounter around the OSU campus. I'm sure I'd be testy from dealing with drunk undergrads for hours on end as well, but it's not rare to come by here as early as 7 pm and get sassed for not telling them to take the onions off your gyro early enough. Oh well, it beats MacDonald's, I suppose.

When it comes to gyros I have always loved this place. They have and probably always will be the best in gyro on campus. Their customer service is the reason I am giving them such a poor review. I have been ordering from Apollo's for 12 years now and I think my time has come to an end. I have had many issues in the past and now I am through. They used to deliver just about anywhere and it was quick. Problem is that isn't the situation anymore. Last few times I have ordered only a couple of gyros and it has taken almost two hours to get them. And now they have upped their delivery fees to $2 if you are far away. Apparently four blocks (less than 3/4 of a mile) is considered far because now they are charging me the $2 extended delivery fee. And the gyro, fries, and drink for $5 is no longer available for deliveries. I'm guessing their business is hurting otherwise they wouldn't be so cheap. If that is the case, it would make sense, because they have just lost one of their most loyal customers over the last decade.

  • Carla D.

Apollo's has fairly decent gyros...as long as you don't ask too many questions and don't pay too much attention to the location. Whenever I got food from there, I would just go in, order a gyro, pay, and make my way out. I've heard some funny stories from other people about this place. For instance, you have to be brave to use the restroom. True, it's a popular campus spot. I would say, get your food to go, though. And be sure to smile and be polite to the people behind the counter; it'll make their day!

Apollo's is good for one thing, decent and cheap food late at night. They were always open when you needed them and provided that much needed relief from hunger when studying. Apollo's is also a must for anyone who has gone out with friends and is looking for a bite to eat before crashing for the night. Expect the place to be busy on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with those making the trip back to the dorms stopping for some food. There is a decent sized menu to choose from.

  • Matthew M.

I agree with most of the other reviewers' comments on Apollo's: The place does an admirable job of feeding people all day and into the night for a fair price. I have not been to Apollo's a lot, only a couple of times when out late and the empty stomach feeling after a night of drinking sets in. The gyros did feel like a godsend at the time, i will say. I have never used their delivery service, but i hear it is executed well.

  • Marissa M.

Apollo's has some of the best hummus I have eaten. Served in a small Styrofoam container for delivery I recommend ordering at least two and extra pitas. Hummus on delivery seems like a dream come true. Not sure what the folks of Apollo's put in theirs, but it is creamy, cold and is iced with tahini. The pitas' are always delivered hot, and with at least four to a pack. Sometimes, to get my order up to delivery fee, I will add an order of their potato wedges. Nothing Greek about them, they are still wedged firmly in a special place in my heart. I am not a super fan of the gyro's there. The sauce somehow upsets my stomach. I am also spoiled by The Happy Greek. I only do take out from Apollo's. The actual dining area is stark and fluorescent. The booths look as comfortable a pew, and to the touch feel slimy. The place is clean, but still feels dirty. Eating there on a regular basis would ruin the mystique. Order out from Apollo's. It is going to take the full forty five minutes so use that time to psych yourself up with anticipation. Once it arrives the moment and the food will be gone all too soon.
