This place is one of a kind. The owners, especially Chris (you'll know him when you meet him:) are extremely friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is a throwback for sure, but it's nice seeing a piece of the past NOT change much. Everything changes, so to me- while I don't love the decor, knowing you're getting great food is what's important. You can always do carry out- that's what I do. They have the BEST custard pie I've ever had. Same for tapioca pudding- to die for. Pancakes were delicious too. I have a sweet tooth lately but the dinners are the real deal and you can't beat the price. Some of their veggies they grow in their backyard- you rarely see that anymore. I think it's good supporting local, longstanding businesses and I'm very happy I finally stopped in here.

We've been regulars at Stone's for about 25 years, when we used to come here with my in-laws and our young daughter. We've always appreciated the restaurant's cleanliness, friendliness, homey atmosphere, and the quality of their food. Mrs. Stone runs the kitchen, and she's an excellent cook. Mr. Stone acts as host, cashier, and general go-to guy. Their dinners are delicious and priced under $10. Many restaurants advertise home cooking, but Stone's really comes through. This was my daughter's favorite place to go when she was young. Now that she's a mother herself, we are bringing our granddaughter in on a regular basis. It's wonderful to have a neighborhood place where three generations can sit down and enjoy a meal together. There aren't too many restaurants like Stone's left. I'm just glad it's so close to home. By the way, Stone's does accept credit cards, and has for at least two years. This is very helpful to us, because we rarely carry cash anymore.

The place is kind of hit or miss. Breakfast for me is a no-go. I thought the pancakes tasted generic, the syrup was generic and the bacon was horrible. It was so bad in fact that I thought it was turkey bacon but they assured me that it wasn't. To balance that out, the dinners are great. The homemade stuffing is some of the best I've ever had and the pies are homemade and so much better than anything from a grocery or Godawful Frisch's

Going to Stone's is a bit like wandering into a sitcom diner set, like Monk's from Seinfeld, except it's a sitcom that you expect to be canceled before the first commercial break of the pilot. There is absolutely no character to this place - the decor is simple and plain and the menu is an unassuming piece of folded white, laminated paper. About the only engaging part of the menu is the fact that you can get Glier's goetta with many entrees (or as a side). Breakfast entrees include such innovative cuisine as "Two Eggs and Two Pancakes", "Two Eggs and Two French Toast," or the ever-popular, "Two Eggs and Home Fries." Lunch items include "Hamburger", "Meatloaf", and "Pork Tenderloin." Yet, despite being the exemplar of ordinary, Stone's has yet to be canceled. it's like "Two and a Half Men" - you can't figure out why the show is still on for the life of you, yet here it is going into it's sixth season and somehow Charlie Sheen is the highest paid actor on television. In fact, Stone's has been around 40+ years. Which leaves me thinking that they must be doing something right. Or, the regulars don't like change much, and, apparently not much *has* changed since 1962 when Stone's opened. So what do they do right? Our coffee was hot and they kept it coming... ...but it came with non-dairy creamer (not cream or even milk). Our eggs were cooked as we ordered them... ...but the French toast appeared to be made from Wonder Bread and both it and the pancakes came with imitation maple-flavored corn syrup in individually wrapped servings, like the kind you might expect to get at a fast food restaurant. The food is moderately priced (our breakfast was $14)... ...but this is a cash-only hash house and the food isn't remarkable enough to make you want to go across the street to the ATM and withdraw money. Stone's isn't for everyone, especially if you like a little flavor in your life, but if you like consistency and knowing what to expect, this might be your new hangout on the West Side.

This is an adorable little restaurant. The staff is nice, the owner is nicer, and everything is delicious. The food taste like it came from a real kitchen not an industrial one. If you are looking for a fancy or modern place to go avoid this place, but if you are looking for some food that fills you up and a place to go enjoy friends and family (and not fear the bill at the end) visit Stone's often!
