This was my favorite meal during my recent road trip through the southwest. The restaurant was nothing special on the outside, but the food and service were great. A good sign was locals meeting up here for dinner. My order of Chili Rellenos was perfectly fried and smothered in green chili sauce and queso. Others in my group loved the enchiladas, salads, and green chili burger. Salsa is freshly made, and it shows. I could tell that this place uses fresh ingredients in all of the foods they prepare. Waitress was very nice, and gets extra credit for patiently suggesting adjustments to menu items in order to accommodate gluten and diabetic needs. If I ever drive back through Tucumcari, NM, I will make a point to stop at the Rockin' Y's Roadhouse.

We stopped here based on the reviews I had read on yelp and were not disappointed. The green chili soup another yelper suggested was great. So was my chopped steak and hubby's meatloaf. Service was prompt. The restroom was clean.

This is a no-nonsense great diner. It has beer (Guiness) as well as other brews. The food is very good. I had a chopped brisket beef sandwich which has good. Their BBQ was a little sweeter than I prefer but it was tasty and had just the right amount of kick. They have an extensive list of sides. I had their fried okra, which was good. My wife had a chopper sirloin sandwich which was also good. I highly recommend their ice cream. They have very good ice cream that is made in New Mexico. Reminds me of ice cream I had when I was a kid that is no longer available in my state. The service was outstanding and my wife and I recommend this place.

Stopped in to this diner mostly out of a need for food.....I imagine this is what drives most of Tucumcari's visitors there. We started out searching for a Mexican restaurant that we also found on Yelp that was reviewed well. When we found it, it was closed, so we came here...93 reviews can't be wrong, right? Right! This place was really good! I was surprised at the quality of the food, for it being so out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere, relatively speaking. A lot of the other restaurants in Tucumcari were a tad...sketchy...this place seems a little run down from the outside but it is clean inside. Our waitress was exceptionally nice! She always said "oh, you're so welcome!" in a super sincere voice. The food was pretty good. I had chicken enchiladas with green sauce, which came with beans and Spanish-style rice. The beans were awesome, the rice...not so much. The enchiladas were pretty good, and unique to me since this is my first time in New Mexico...definitely different from Mexican food in the Midwest. My dad had a cheese enchilada, which was also good. My mom's salad was good also. All around this a good place...I'm pretty glad we ended up here tonight! It definitely solved the hunger problem, and this is definitely the only town around that has any notable number of restaurants.

There are not a lot of options in Tucumcari, and this one probably gets overlooked because it's a mile or so off I-40, but it's worth the couple extra minutes to get there. A classic roadside diner with fast and friendly service. Menu has a nice variety of typical diner fare.

    (4)
  • Madelaine G.

This place was great. We got in late from a road trip and got some killer tex-mex cuisine, and really really tasty salsa. Can't go wrong with enchiladas! We got a jar of salsa to take home, and while it's not as good as in-restaurant, it's still pretty good.

  • Alix H.

Amazing food :) the staff was friendly and awesome! Going to become a yearly stop when we come through Tucumcari! The green chili stew and chicken fried steak mexican style was delicious!

  • Erin G.

Authentic and flavorful home cooking in a relaxed atmosphere. Our whole family was thrilled with the variety of food offered and we all left full! We would definitely eat there again!

  • James C.

Definitely worth stopping here! Not many places around until the bigger cities, but this is the one we'll stop at again on our way through. A couple of us had vegetable plates, and our favorites were the green beans, Mac and cheese, corn and fried okra. The green chili is one on the best things to try on the menu. Meatloaf and bacon cheeseburger were also good. They had great dessert choices also. Reasonable prices for good food.

    (5)
  • Wendy G.

Good food! Friendly staff! Our server was extremely sweet and kind. The small bites menu really makes it affordable. We were able to enjoy a real meal for the same price as fast food.

  • Will T.

The food was good, the prices were reasonable and the service was great. I had my first green chilli cheeseburger. I highly recommend it.

  • Jim H.

Service was quick and friendly. Food was very tasty for a diner, wife had grilled chicken salad, son chicken strips and gravy plus Mac and cheese and fries (he was a happy camper!) I had the Mexican platter. Great portions for the price. Would come back if in the area.

    (5)
  • Irina M.

Really delicious food, everyone was kind and friendly, the prices are fair...good job! I'll definitely come here again!

  • J L.

I think the reviews are a little high for this standard, run-of-the-mill diner. Service was great, but the food was, meh. The chicken fried steak was nothing to write home about.

  • Willie C.

amazing chili rellenos ... super yummy. the salsa for the chips was really great too. filled us up for our trip through and all the way to Oklahoma from santa fe same day. service was really nice.

  • Cristina M.

There are limited options in Tucumcari, but Yelp led me to this place and it wasn't bad. A typical diner with a large assortment of food. I think my husband and I shared a BBQ platter and it was pretty good. Don't expect fancy, larger-city fine dining. Expect frozen, breaded okra and canned gravy on the potatoes. But they did everything right. the prices and quantity were appropriate. The staff was really friendly and the kids ate their whole meals. Not many places to stop between Albuquerque and Amarillo, but this was a good choice.

  • Adriana G.

Great lunch meal! Had some amazing fries, green chili soup and a salad. Would def stop again.

    (4)
  • Aisha C.

Great service and good food. Home cookin and some mexican options. I had a yummy (& cheap) bean burrito and my husband loved his chicken fried chicken plate. Coffee was hot and strong. If ever traveling down 40 again - Ill def stop here! Dont go to Dennys! Theres better food down the road - promise.

  • Lynnette S.

Great food, great atmosphere, great service and great prices. Jackie was a super waitress and very attentive. I love it when you go to a restaurant and you never have to hunt for service. She gets an A+! There were three of us and everyone's food was delicious and hot.

  • Tom O.

Great spot to have dinner. Food and deserts are excellent. When in town for the night or passing through this is the place. For Tucumcari it has to be 5 stars but I only thought 4 stars because of if your looking for fine dining go to a big town.

    (4)
  • Deb S.

Try the green chili soup, it's the most flavorful I've ever had. Most items from $9 and up and they are really large portions, but they do have a "small plate selection." My husband had the fried catfish special and said it was prepared perfectly and he also loved the slaw. They had some Tex Mex, salads, burgers, interesting mixed drinks and have plenty of parking for big rigs. Very friendly service and tasty food. We boon-docked there in the motorhome for the night with the manager's permission. Since they don't serve breakfast, they recommended Kix on 66 cafe for breakfast tomorrow. This was so good, we'll try it.

We stopped in at Rockin' Y's Roadhouse on our family vacation and we're happy we did! From the green chile burgers to the excellent customer service, we left very satisfied! Definitely recommend!!

While Trucking cross country Rockin' Y's has become a frequent stop for this Gear Jammer! Located at a perfect stopping point on the corner of US54 and old route 66. The food is nearly always delicious and the service is friendly. The location very welcoming to Trucks and nice and quiet for overnight parking. They also have WiFi for customers. I absolutely recommend the next time your passing through Tucumcari,NM you stop in for a bite. Keep on Truckin!

  • Holly S.

Delicious home-cooked yumminess. I had meatloaf, mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes, while husband devoured a big BBQ special. Very clean, relaxed atmosphere, so glad we trusted reviews and made this our dinner stop on I-40.

    (5)
  • Drew B.

Worth stopping for! The green chili cheeseburger is the thing to order. Our server was very pleasant and welcoming - this was exactly the right place to take a little break from our drive. Located right on route 66 in the iconic town of Tucumcari, you will feel like a local when you eat here.

  • Nicholas D.

Service was quick and incredibly friendly. The diner was clean and spacious. The food was great, I loved the green chile stew and was happy that the salad had romaine lettuce and not crappy iceberg. My friends loved the tacos. Overall great experience.

  • Jellyfish Z.

Great food, good portion sizes, and fast and friendly service. What more could you ask for?! We arrived hungry from a long drive and were immediately sat. We ordered a bowl of soup, chicken burrito, and green-chili burger. All of the items were good (burger was my least favorite). The soup was delicious and so was the burrito. There was enough to have a second meal (we certainly took the leftovers to go) YUM!

  • Rebekah G.

What a treat for the traveler! We were coming in on a Saturday night, so I called ahead and they saved a table for our family of 6. Everything was delicious and comforting. I loved all the care that was taken with our food; homemade soup, bbq sauce, and mashed potatoes, meats smoked in-house... Every plate on our table was just great.

  • Laura P.

Well deserving to be on the Green Chile Cheeseburger Trail. Service is fast friendly and efficient -- lots of locals eat here (that's a clue). Very clean. Food is excellent - hand cut fries, juicy well seasoned hand-formed burgers, and generous portions. A great place to stop for any meal -- off the I-40.

    (5)
  • Jason S.

Gas station attendant up the road recommended it. Grateful he did. Our server, Tara, was incredible. Salsa was fresh and tasty. BBQ sauce homemade and flavorful. Chile Rellenos were a meal and very good. Okra, awesome. Sopapilla was good. Chips were some of my favorites ever. Yes, I have a whole tortilla chip fetish, judge me. Friend said her pulled pork sandwich was really good. Get Tara to sing for you.

  • Mary M.

A pleasant surprise in a sparsely populated area! We ordered a Double Bacon BLT with Fries, and a "small plate" Tacos with Potato Salad (talk about fusion!). The bacon on the BLT was perfectly crispy, the lettuce and tomato fresh and cold, and it was uniquely presented on a Kaiser bun. Mayo was on the side so one could decide how much or how little one wanted. Plenty of well-prepared "dirty" (unpeeled, not really dirty) fries! The Taco shells were homemade and fried crispy! And the Potato Salad was creamy, with perfectly cooked potatoes. We will definitely make this a stop anytime we are headed west on I-40!

    (5)
  • Michael L.

The staff gets five stars for their friendliness and the food gets two stars for a cowboy round-up to four. The sausage, green beans and mashed potatoes were great. The ribs and brisket were as tough as an old shoe. If they could get figure out how to keep these two items moist then this place would get five stars.

    (4)
  • Bridget P.

The best fried okra I've ever had, and that's saying something: I was born and raised in Mississippi! Steer clear of the "pinto beans," though, they are questionable at best. Huge portions and decent prices. Excellent people watching, too...

  • Barbara D.

It was ok. I do like to give small family owned restaurants a chance over the national chains. I had the patty melt w mashed sweet potatoes and my husband had a burger and fries. The rye bread, swiss cheese, grilled onions, and burger was pretty good. My husband said his deluxe hamburger was ok. The service was all right, our waitress was very sweet. I thought there would be more of a Route 66 vibe, really did not feel it.

    (3)
  • Cristy R.

The chicken enchiladas are delicious, and the mashed potatoes and gravy are amazing! This little place is worth the stop. We recommend it.

  • Alexandra K.

We stopped by this place on our way to Colorado from Austin for dinner and it was really good! My mom had the meatloaf, which was excellent, with buttered corn and mashed sweet potatoes. I had an ok grilled cheese (made with American or Velveeta) but a really good cup of their green chile stew, which had a nice flavor and was about medium spicy. The service was mostly great, but they were short servers that day so we did have to wait for some things, while other things were forgotten. But they were super nice people! They had a decent sized menu too, with New Mexican cuisine as well as chicken fried steaks. We could walk there easily from our motel. Probably one of the best restaurants you'll find for dinner in this town!

  • Zach Q.

I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews but in comparison, I could never give it more than 2 stars. They restaurant was small and dirty. There were flies everywhere inside. Our food was just ok. My wife said here tacos reminded her of her school lunches. That's not good. No good beers either.

    (2)
  • Jon D.

Like many others, we stopped here because of the reviews on Yelp. We were not disappointed! Although I can eat nearly anything and be satisfied, my wife is much more picky than I am. She was in the mood fir Mexican and although this is not a Mexican restaurant per se, their burritos were actually very very good. The kids thoroughly enjoyed their burgers and fries as well. The prices are much better than their rivals down the street. We would have paid a lot more over there. Total bill for 4 was around $28.

  • Genevieve D.

Good food and friendly service. Clean and plenty of parking for trailers and semi's. We had meatloaf and brisket and bought a Route 66 patch for my collection

  • Mike N.

This gets an optimistic 3star rank because it is probably the better restaurant in this void. We had hamburgers so maybe "missed out" but based on the iceberg lettuce in my kids' salad and dryish beef in my burger, probably not. Our server was good though and the owner was friendly enough. The lady behind the counter could buy a smile though...maybe a bad day. Anyways, we were underwhelmed but no longer hungry when we left, so I'd recommend it for the traveler.

So glad we ate here during our cross-country trip! Rockin' Y's has an eclectic menu, and all so good. The service is friendly and fast, the food is hot and well prepared (we had BBQ and tex-mex), the dining room is huge (lots of tables, and booths all around the perimeter, plus counter seating). We ate later in the evening (8pm, pushing 9) so it wasn't crowded, but there were still at least 10 tables full and several people came in after us. The ribs were great -- they're dry, have a great rub, and Y's serves a tangy wet sauce to go with them if you like. When I ordered, I wasn't sure if they were smokin things themselves, but they have to be, so fantastic. The enchilada platter (combo) was great too, sauces were very flavorful, the cheese was melted but high quality so it didn't clump up, and everything tasted fresh. Prices are fantastic. My only regret is that we weren't all that hungry, I wish I'd had the room for some green chilis!

If you like eating at an old style diner then this place is for you. I had the chicken fried chicken and it was awesome. They have friendly wait staff and delicious food. Yes they are open on Sundays.

Yum! Glad we stopped by this cute diner. Food was hot & delicious! Wasn't busy but took a bit longer than it should have. Pretty sure it was wait staff, not kitchen. Would definitely go back though.

Ate here based on Yelp reviews. Glad we did. Got two meals to-go to eat in our RV. Wife got the T-bone steak and I got the lemon pepper chicken. Food was really good and hit the spot after driving all day. Staff was friendly and the dining area looked comfortable. There was plenty of room to park our RV on the side of the restaurant in the large dirt/gravel lot. I would definitely recommend eating here.

We decided to stop at Rockin Y's in Tucumcari, NM for dinner after reading all the growing Yelp reviews and were sure glad we did. It doesn't look like much from the outside, so we probably wouldn't have stopped here on our own. Inside it looks like any average roadside diner. I was a little nervous when I saw, printed on the bottom of the menu, "All dishes are the Chef's creation, therefore no substitutions are allowed." I have to be honest; I find that just plain rude and not anything that a REAL CHEF would ever put in writing. It shows an arrogant attitude. So, you're telling me that if I have a food allergy you won't leave that item out of a dish? That could be dangerous to someone's health. If it hadn't been for all the positive Yelp reviews, I would have walked right out. Just keeping it real. I am glad we stayed. Our waitress was like a little ray of sunshine. she laughed and smiled and joked with us. We told her we drove here from Phoenix and she shared that she was originally from Phoenix. She suggested menu items and, when Ron asked her for some tomatoes to add to his salad, brought him a bowl of diced fresh tomatoes with a ready smile and a positive can-do attitude. She told us that the meatloaf there was to die for, but Tyoni and I had already decided we were splitting the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. We were allowed to pick 2 sides and we wanted a salad but it wasn't in the approved list of sides. NOT ONLY did she offer to bring a salad as one of our sides but she brought us an extra plate so that it would be easier to split. Tyoni happens to be VERY PICKY about her gravy and asked for the waitress to bring out a little sample to try (the restaurant we ate breakfast No problem, says the waitress and heads into the back to get her a small bowl of white gravy to sample. It easily passed muster as they MAKE IT FROM SCRATCH. The chicken fried steak was perfect - nice crispy breading and not overcooked (my biggest pet peeve). The mashed potatoes were average and they did not have balsamic vinegar (though the waitress brought out a vinegar and oil setup that suited us just fine. Ron ordered French fries with brown gravy. The fries I swipes from him were nice and crispy outside with bits of skin on the ends and the brown gravy was decent. We wanted to take the waitress home with us, Ron jokingly offered to let her drive the rest of the way to Illinois with us, but - alas - she turned us down.

This place is about a mile off from the free way but it's totally worth. I got the fried chicken which was fried to perfection. It wasn't too salty or greasy like other restaurants. My boyfriend got the meatloaf which was also delicious. I just really want to compliment the restaurant for making their food not salty. Their ingredients were fresh... It was like eating home cooked food. I'm so glad we didn't go to Denny's or Sonic. Excellent food.

  • David J.

Very good for price. We had chicken fried steak, chile rellenos, macaroni and cheese, and a burger. Everything was homemade and enjoyable. Rellenos were much better than those in most Santa Fe New Mexican restaurants. Pleasant service.

In from out of town, planned on coming here after reading reviews for the chicken fried chicken. When we arrived, we were told about the amazing special: ribs, brisket and sausage with sides for only $10! But had to tried that chicken fried chicken! It was amazing! The beers were super cold and the food was excellent. Our server, Tara, was wonderful and made us laugh. Great service made the experience really pleasant. We will be back next time in town!

So much better than expected - GREAT FOOD AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE!!! After driving all day, we just wanted a quick meal. We both had salads that were very fresh and perfectly made. They were brought out very quickly. Jackie was our server and and she was extremely attentive. There's not a lot in Tucumcari but this is place is not to be missed.

This place is awesome. If you are passing through on Interstate 40, don't pass this place up. The food and service is awesome. We had the Green Chile Cheese Burger and real sweet tea

  • Jennifer A.

We found this place because it was the best rated place on Yelp in the area. It's a nice diner where you can get a decent meal and the staff are friendly. It seems like the kind of place that attracts the local. Also, the prices are cheap. I'd say if you want a decent meal and a fresh slice of pie in a casual environment, this is the place for you. The food isn't 5-star quality, but it's good and the portions are adequate. The only downside is that they close at 8PM during the week.

  • Leah O.

If you want to try out a traditional Green Chili Cheeseburger, this is as good a place as any! That burger was ridiculously yummy. As cliche' as it might sound, this restaurant felt very "authentic." And our server was absolutely delightful.

Typical diner fare. I had the chicken fried chicken with fried okra and broccoli. It was so much I really feel stuffed. My husband had the smoked sausage , salad and soup of the day which he enjoyed very much. The young waitress was attentive and quickly filled our requests. We were here on a Thursday night in December and the place was very quiet. Good place to dine in Tucumcari.

After 5 days on a motorcycle and an assortment of fast food we were looking forward to some "normal" food. Liked the reviews on Yelp and picked Rockin' Ys' Roadhouse. So glad we did! Nice, clean, diner-style restaurant. Great, friendly waitress Tara. Good food! My husband had chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and an excellent cream gravy and a very good fresh salad. I had chopped sirloin with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. Fresh brewed tea! We were stuffed so we brought a lovely slice of lemon meringue pie back to the hotel for bedtime snack. And it was great... husband says it is the best lemon meringue pie he 's had in a long time. Recommend!!

When traveling through this area, we make it a point to have Dinner at Rocking Y, we love there New Mexican dishes, Red and Green Chili is this best! Owner's and staff are great too!

With a limited selection of restaurants in this rather remote area, we found this to be an enjoyable experience. My wife had barbecue and I had Mexican. Both very good. The people were friendly and the server attentive. Also it appeared to be very clean and well maintained. The restaurant got its name from the two sisters Yvette and Yvonne who are the owners.

The fried ocra and chicken mushroom Swiss burger were exactly what I needed! While most of Tucumcari is boarded shut in Sunday, I was so happy to find this gem open for lunch. Our server, Taneka, was wonderful. Service with a smile is alive and well here. The diner feel is perfect. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is an annoying buzz. They sell a few Route 66 items inside as well.

Service was the best!! The waitress was kind and took the time for recommendations even though they were slammed. I never had to ask for a refill. The brisket and okra were REALLY good. The green chile soup was soothing after a long stressful day of driving thru storms. Definitely try one of their cobblers a la mode. Pecan was to die for! It was an overall terrific experience.

Home cookin'. Had the "Chicken Fried Chicken-Steak with fried okra and baked sweet potato. Solid. Nothin' fancy, but good and plenty of it. Reasonably priced and great service.

Fantastic find!!! Great server Kaitlin but that was just the beginning I ordered the chicken fried chicken and I am not a gravy person so i requested it on the side but I ate it all...so creamy! My husband ordered the meatloaf and said it was delish then to end this wonderful meal we shared a lemon merengue pie...yummy! Do not be deceived by the outside it was one of the cleanest diners I have been in.

This place is amazing. From Amber, the hostess, who is so friendly, informative and professional too the drink serverJackie so sweet, Kassie our server was quick witted and spot on with anything we needed. The Cook, Rafael was awesome and a gifted cook. Overall experience a 10 but they didn't give me that option so 5 is the max. This place is a must if you love good home cooked food...flavoring was amazing!

My truck broke down and I was stranded in Tucumcari, NM for 2 days. I went to another steak house In town and the service was horrible. I accidentally found Rockin Y 's on my way out of town and was I bummed that I hadn't found them sooner. Great food and great service. They are not by the hotels , they are off Route 66 corner of 54.

I ordered the Easter special of ham, peas, carrots, red potatoes and a dinner roll for $13.98. It was pretty good. My husband ordered a rack of ribs but was brought a 1/2 rack with coleslaw. The ribs were tasty with a dry rub but the coleslaw was tasteless, like they forgot the dressing in it. The waitress and the cashier were both told that the coleslaw had no flavor and they both looked dumbfounded like that was impossible. My husband asked me to taste it and someone who cooks all the time, they forgot the dressing, weather it was to be mayo based or vinegar based. He also got green beans with bacon with his meal and those were tasty also. The place was nicely decorated for Easter and we both received a dessert with our meal, which they happily let us carry out . I gave them a 4 and my husband a 2, thus the 3 star rating.

We have been traveling through here for 10 years and have had to endure sub par food until now. The Mexican food was homemade and tasted like it. Hubby had the chicken fried steak and it was the way you dream about--yum, yum, yum covered in homemade sausage gravy. The lighting is my only complaint. It is fluorescent and I dislike that. Go for the food. That's where the locals are getting theirs. Super friendly staff and good value for the money.

We stopped through on our ride through New Mexico. This is a neat place to stop. It had the feel of an old route 66 diner. The only thing better than our meal was the service. Our server was on the ball, she was fun, witty and we had a lot of fun. I wouldn't hesitate to go back!

Convenient because it's probably one of the only restaurants that will be open in Tucumcari, NM. Staff was friendly. Food wasn't great. I ordered chicken tacos. Flavorless chicken and interesting beans and rice. My friend ordered the enchilada and really enjoyed it. To each their own.

This is a Route 66 diner with old fashioned appeal. The service was great - Olana was attentive and kind. The food was fine and reasonably priced. The sweet potatoes were very good. They also have several flavors of ice cream. If you are passing through Tucumcari, Rockin' Ys would be a good choice to stop for food.

We normally hit Del's when stopping in Tucumcari but because it was Sunday and Del's was closed we tried something new. I was sold when I asked for green chile and I got real roasted green chile chopped....true New Mexico style. Not overly stylish but great food at a great price. Nice find in a small town.

I truly enjoyed this place. I had the chicken frie teak. The breading was so crunchy and tasty...almost just a that. I had some cole slaw and some mashed red potatoes. This is all home made and worth a stop if your traveling. I like the atmosphere and the staff was always on point and ready to serve my needs. I plan on stopping here every time i go through this town.

Traveling through and stopped for dinner. The food was excellent and the service was very good. It all tasted fresh. I had the Mexican enchiladas and rice and beans they were delicious. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her panko baked cod. Worth the stop.

Find yourself on Route 66? Definitely stop by Rockin' Ys! On our way back to Texas, we decided to stop for a bite and read good things on Yelp! We came on a Monday and alas, it was $5 burger night! My husband opted for a burger and added green chiles and American cheese. (Per his report, the hatch chiles were the perfect addition and he would have easily given it 5 stars alone). I had the chicken enchiladas with red sauce which came with Spanish rice, beans, chips and salsa and sopapillas. The salsa was definitely homemade and was rich with tomato flavor and a medium spicy level. The enchiladas were stuffed with freshly shredded chicken and also full of flavor. The sopapillas were the perfect ending to the meal, drizzled with honey. Oh and I can't forget the waitstaff - super friendly and helpful. But then again, i have yet to meet someone here in New Mexico who isn't nice and welcoming :)

Small town diner with big city taste. We took a chance on this place based on Yelp reviews. Waitstaff was more than friendly and went above and beyond to make sure we had all we needed. I had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes smothered in cream gravy and a side of okra. Southern cooking in New Mexico - wasn't bad at all. The real treasure was the St Louis Ribs. Fall off the bone, dry rub smoked ribs - perfect! I was glad when my son left 3 ribs on his plate. The only thing that I could find wrong was the complimentary sopapia that came with my wife's taco salad. No sugar, no cinnamon, no butter = bland desert even with honey. I would definitely recommend if you find yourself in this little town. Go when the sun goes down and enjoy the neon at the retro motels on the Route 66 strip.

Driving through looking for a good restaurant. Checked Yelp and there it was! Food was very very good! The place was very clean! Our waitress Terra was so pleasant. Would definitely recommend this place.

  • Eric F.

Clean tables and efficient service. Food was decent, but not memorable. I had a combination plate with their brisket, ribs and sausage. The sausage was very good, but the ribs and brisket were unremarkable. There was neither anything wrong with this place nor anything that blew me away.

Went for lunch as we were passing through town. Excellent food. Very fresh for being a diner type place. I had a bean enchilada with green chile sauce, my husband had a cheeseburger. Both were just excellent.

  • Mike K.

About a mile off the freeway to the north. Worth the detour. Agree with the review about being clean inside. We had cod and chicken fried steak. All platters come with choice of 2 sides out of 16 to choose from. This is a gold mine for traditional American food. Mexican as well. TONS of parking for big rigs and rv's too.

  • Michelle G.

Don't debate about it...just eat here!! We stopped in our travels to eat lunch and were so satisfied! The chicken fried steak is flaky and perfect. The brisket is tender and the sauce is so good. Our server was very nice and helpful. Awesome place!!

  • Bart D.

Wonderful food, great portions, ice cold beer and a price that was appropriate. Service was great, food came out in a timely manner and was almost too hot to eat. If you stop in Tucumcari, pass up the chain eateries and find the Rockin Y Roadhouse

  • Adam W.

We enjoyed a fantastic breakfast at the Roadhouse. My over-easy eggs were perfectly cooked, and came with house-made potatoes and 4 (!) strips of bacon. My dining companion's pancakes were fresh, tasty and HUGE. Coffee was diner-standard and my cup was kept filled. Prices are very fair for the quality and quantity of food. Staff were very friendly. As good as breakfast was, I was almost sad that we hadn't been there in time for lunch, as the non-AM offerings looked pretty solid as well. This place is worth a visit.

I arrived here at 10:00 a.m. passing through Tucumcari, and I had a breakfast platter of eggs with hash browns and biscuits. The food was terrific, the service was delightfully tasteful and gregarious (this was the best part), and the Route 66 atmosphere was positively genuine - one gem of a restaurant. 5 stars.

  • Karen S.

We stopped here based on Yelp. The food was fresh and terrific. The salsa was good and chips were homemade. The chili rellanoes were very good although different than we are used to... crispy and lightly battered. But the very best thing was the blackberry cobbler with ice cream. Delicious! Attentive service. Loved it... will make a poiint to stop there again on our next cross country.

  • Susie B.

What a find in a small town on I-40. The chili relleno's were crispy the way we like them. Ask for Carrie to wait on you and the service will be terrific. Even the wine by the glass was good. I will definitely try to get back there

We drove all day and had read about Rockin Y's. It was very good and the waitress,Caitlin, was excellent. She recommended the homemade dessert topped with ice cream. It was the perfect finish after a tender grilled chicken breast and a wonderful chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. We hope to eat there again when we come through

  • Susan R.

Probably the best meal we had when driving through NM. Hubby's chicken fried steak was amazing, and my fried chicken strips were pretty darned tasty too! The veggies were cooked to perfection and the dinner rolls were enormous. If this diner had a second location in East Texas, they'd have folks standing in line! A GREAT place to eat - we will def. go back. HIGHLY recommend this diner. Am sure glad we found this location on Yelp! Susan Tyler, TX

I stopped here on my way from Michigan to California. As Adam mentioned, not much else to choose from except for national chains. It was awesome! I ordered the panko breaded fish with sweet potato and green beans. The price of this meal was less than $10. This dish looked like something from a more upscale place. It was flavorful, filling, and so much better than anything I could have gotten at a national chain. It was real food, and plenty of it. The server included a dinner roll and it was pretty tasty too. The place is pretty basic, no frills, but the menu offerings are plentiful. The burgers looked great but I wanted to try the fish. The wine selection looked interesting also, local wines. Since I was driving and tired, I didn't have wine. I included a photo of my meal (before I devoured it). Seriously, if you're ever in Tucumcari, New Mexico - eat at the Rockin YYs. You'll be glad you did.

Stopped in here on my way from California to St. Louis...Only place open in this hole of a town... Awesome soup, awesome burgers! Yelpers go here! Great prices and service too. We were going to go to Dels (Another local restaurant) but I'm glad we ended up here instead! Surprisingly... Highly recommend considering it's in the middle of no where.

Stop, look no further. WOW! Rolling cross country NJ2CA with the wifey, two boys and the dog. We were looking for a hardcore route 66 experience...stopped at the midpoint cafe in Adrian Texas...disappointing, decided not to eat. Grabbed the iPad, hit the yelp and BAM! First off the town of Tucumcari, NM is the best all around 66 spot...harkens back to the mother roads heyday, period! If you love 66 this is a must stop town and road food paradise. I had the green chile burger, slamming. Wifey had the chicken tacos, groovy. Big boy had the smokehouse burger, fantastic. Tough guy ordered the chicken fried steak...best I ve ever had...period. Super nice, super clean, super food!

Another place I found with my Yelp app. Clean, friendly and good food. I really like places, like this one, where every employee gives you the feeling of being welcome. Driving cross country? - skip the chains and try this place - you will definitely not be disappointed.

  • Jessie G.

Address is wrong on yelp...the selection is great and the waitress was very friendly. I've driven over a thousand miles and am relieved I stopped here for brunch! I got the enchiladas which were delicious. I had them bring both red and green chili. Both were good but I much preferred the green. I hope everyone who visits here will enjoy it as much as I.

Great food and portions priced right. I had Oven Baked Cod, yummy, husband had chili rellenos platter and thought it was outstanding add a nice bottle of Cabernet, just the best. Service was on spot. Don't miss this sister restaurant to the town's other top rated eatery Del's.

  • Preston L.

Damn this place was delicious! I had a beef burrito, french fries and some type of Mexican bread with honey, so freaking good. Especially the burrito covered in red chili sauce, the meat and everything I had was fresh and meal was hot. Tortilla's were cooked fresh as well. I highly recommend this place!

I got the chili, meh...it was edible. It lacked richness, flavor and taste. Sadly, it was a little greasy. It consisted of beans and meat. I didn't taste any tomato, garlic, chili powder, bell peppers, nothing. According to the other reviews I should've gotten a burger.

Checked out Rockin' Y's Roadhouse for dinner on yelp after arriving in town, I have to agree with the other reviews I read the food and service is good but the best surprise was their Margarita! Since they only have a beer and wine license I was surprised when they offered me the choice of a Margarita to drink as well. It is very light and refreshing and the surprise is it's made from wine and you would never know it. So be sure to give this drink a try.

We stopped here on a long trek from MI to AZ, and we had a wonderful breakfast that was both very filling and delicious. The atmosphere was very small town, but not in a way that didn't invite visitors to have a laugh with the regulars. The waitstaff were all very nice and speedy, always making sure we had everything we needed. A great stop and I would love to visit again.

If you find yourself on I-40 around Tucumari, NM, do yourself a favor and take a break from McD's and Arby's. This place is just a mile or so off the freeway (mountain Rd.) Food is great, fresh, nice menu options, friendly waitstaff. Oh and the food is a great value with awesome sopapillas for dessert. Would definitely come back, but don't find myself in "no where" NM very often.

There are times you should listen to locals and not to Yelp. This was one of those times. The gal at the hotel desk recommend Del's. I thanked her and told her we ware going to try Rockin' Ys' - all she said was that she recommended Del's. Should have listened. We had the Chile Rellenos and the chicken something or other (very forgettable). The chicken somethingorother was very dry and tough. The Chiie Rellenos were stuffed with either cheese-whiz or american cheese. Once free of the "cheese spread" the chilies were quite good. The "rice" side apparently started life as Spanish Rice - right out of the box. The bean sides were OK. Service was OK also. We asked her for a recommendation (I think she wanted to say we should eat elsewhere) and after a long pause (maybe she was ruminating on the question) she told us that everything was good. We should have left at this point but, we thought, Yelp is seldom wrong - which is true except when it's not right. So . . . chalk it up to wrong staff on duty, wrong phase of the moon, wrong cook on duty - what ever - if you feel adventurous and are stocked up on antacid, give Rockin' Ys' a shot - there's not much else in Tucumcari to choose from anyway.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
