Had lunch there today, They were nice enough to make a New Mexico breakfast burrito for lunch for me. It was packed with delicious ingredients and was enough for two meals. The dinner salad I ordered was surprising in that there were multiple tasty greens in it, not just iceberg lettuce -- and they had a delicious raspberry vinaigrette as one of the choices. There were many other inviting items on the partially New Mexican menu (with daily specials) but I really wanted that breakfast item which I'd craved but didn't yet have this vacation). The building's design is fascinating, but there is one element in it that shouldn't put one off - the swastikas (albeit in reverse) which at the time of construction was just a sun symbol. The artist/artisan responsible included many other American Indian symbols in the total design (exterior/interior/ceilings/light fixtures/furniture). This place is off the main road and appears to be a favorite of local residents. I'm glad I saw mention of it in a travel book and turned off the main road.

I stayed at this hotel about 10 years ago. The restaurant was a hidden gem. Great food and friendly service. There was a chef there named David who took pride in his food and customer service. I don't know what happened. We tried to have lunch there for the last three years in a row. The first try, they didn't have certain menu items and the food tasted precooked. Last year, during the Sunflower Festival, we walked into a busy restaurant and NO ONE acknowledged us. No server, no waitress, no one. We stood there like stumps wondering if we needed to seat ourselves. We left and went elsewhere. Just left from my third and final visit. No one greeted us but after standing around wondering if we just sit or wait, a dour looking waitress motioned us to a table. The waitstaff was cold and unwelcoming. I ordered a breakfast item and my friend ordered a diner entree. We waited over 45 min, got only one serving of tea and our waitress never checked on us or updated us on our meal. Don't know what it could have been. Everyone else in the cafe was getting checked on and greeted. Actually, I can come up with one reason we were not as attended to but I won't go there. Let's just say , the restaurant is not what it used to be and it's not worth the effort. Find another local restaurant.

Sorry to say, if I visit the Mountainair area again, I will go to Alpine Alley. This place has been open and closed about 10 times in the last 10 years. The new owners are trying to make a go of it, but aren't doing very well. Food was just o.k. My companion ordered the Chile con Carne; good flavor but not spicy enough and not heated. I wanted the open face Green Chili Cheeseburger, but the cook messed up the order, and we didn't want to wait any longer to eat, so I had the Chile also. The only times I visited this café that the food was really good was back in the '80's when the primary menu was New Mexican. I wish the owners luck, and hope they get things smoothed out soon. It's a nice place it just needs to be smoothed out as far as service is concerned.
