One of my favorite breakfast joints. We change are order almost all the time and it's always delicious. The service is top notch. The only complaint would be is the look of the restaurant is outdated. But who's complaining not me as long as the menu stays the same.

Good food at good prices. We got the #6 and #7 combination plates. Both were good. I like green chile better than red chile so I liked mine better. :) The chips and salsa are also homemade and delicious. Service was a little slow because of a large group that we couldn't see or hear in the next room, and the main dining area was empty except for us, so that was a little odd. Altogether I'd go here again if we're in the area again. Nice to see a local spot while driving through.

El Charro knows how to make chile rellenos without smothering the chiles in breading. Good Mexican food!

Hungry for Mexican and a margarita, my friend and I stopped here on a cross country trip. Our waitress was most accommodating and allowed us to sample several sauces before choosing. We had the flat green beef enchiladas and chile con queso with green chiles mixed in. The food was simply awesome!! Great place. Great food!

In route to Florida from Cali on I-10 and the options were few. I tried to look past the reviews in order to be uninspired... Starting off with the chips my expectations were low for the food. The chips were awful. Unable to try the salsa because they were seriously unable to be eaten. Hard and tasted disgusting. I told the waitress they were bad and asked if they had more or suggested this might have been a bad basket. She seemed confused and said they are usually good and walked away. I got a combo plate and added a cheese relleno. The combo came with a beef taco, cheese and bean tostada, cheese enchilada, pork tamale and rice and beans. The taco was tasty and the meat was in patty form and cut up in the taco. The tostada was also good and had me wonder how the chips could be so bad with the shell for the tostada and taco being so good. The Chile relleno was my favorite. Perfect sized pepper and it tasted delicious with what seemed like two difference cheeses and bread crumbs. The cheese enchilada I would stay away from. Pretty simple to make, but this was more like a raw tortilla with red sauce which I personally did not find appealing. The pork tamale I also did not care for. The meat tasted bad and it was cold. Overall it was the best for what I had around, but nothing I would drive out of my way to visit again.

Don't even waste your time at this disgusting place. Head on the main drag east and go to Ramonas the best place in town. We have watched them more than once take the chips left on tables and dump them into a big bin in the back to be used again for the next customers. Go on down to Ramonas enjoy a nice atmosphere a very friendly family and delicious food.

I am going to start by saying that the service was good. We came in at 8pm on a Saturday night and were seated quickly. Our server was friendly and attentive. The place is exactly what you would expect from a diner-type restaurant on the side (literally) of four railroad tracks in a small town. And after an 80+ hour work week, it was exactly what myself and my party needed. We all ordered a round of Mexican beers and margaritas! Unfortunately, my praise stops there. The margarita was a really sweet pre-mix which, as an authentic Mexican restaurant, was disappointing! We ordered some nachos and chips and salsa to start with and the chips were stale! The salsa was watered down. Again, in a Mexican restaurant, this is a STAPLE and should be treated with attention and care! I would be happy with anything if I had a good margarita and delicious sals--not the case. I ordered chicken tacos for dinner which were pretty decent. My friends raved that the chili relleno was delicious, but my husband had a once-frozen tamale on his plate. Overall, the food was underwhelming.

Red sauce and chips were great, the breakfast food was definitely too my liking and the tacos, while greasy, were still pretty good for a hole in the wall spot

Hmmm... You don't come here because it gorgeous. Lordsburg is a town that seems to exist as a stop to truckers and travelers weary during this long stretch of I-10. I've done this drive about 10 times, yet never stopped here until this trip (2014). El Charro had a lot of great Yelp reviews, so we decided to eat an early din din here instead of waiting for our next stop in Tucson. I really wanted to like it, as my initial impression was, "What a charming little place." What an awful mistake. The nice things are the waitresses are so sweet and this is a scenic place, in a old, small town by the railroad tracks type of way. Had our service been faster, I would have had time to snap some AMAZING photographs before the sunset. Sadly though, as nice as the staff was, our service was slower than molasses. This appears to be due to lack of staff. However, they should warn travelers who may be in a rush (like we were) that it will be a while before you can order, eat and pay. We finished our beverages, chips and salsa before our dinner order was even taken. When that happened, we were not offered refills and it was another 30 minutes before we saw a staff member again. The bathrooms are wretched by the way, you probably have time during that slow service to head over somewhere else and use a restroom there. The red chili salsa was absolutely amazing. You would think that was a sign we were about to have a great dinner. I kept thinking during our hour wait for our dinners, "Now this is going to be good." Heeeellll to the hizzo...no. Sorry, but it was awful. My taco meat was half of a burger patty and tasted like a greasy, nasty hamburger in a greasy, soggy hard taco shell. I did not finish it. The enchilada was a teeny tiny slop of mess. I didn't finish that either. The only decent item was the tostada, but it was tiny, a bit greasy and flavorless. I would have eaten better at Taco Bell. So yeah, if I ever drive this stretch of the 10 again, I'm only stopping here again for photos.

I live in Southern Arizona so I'm very familiar with high quality Mexican food and this certainly was far from it. The chips were rather old and greasy and almost a little stale and the salsa with them was moderately good but nothing special. I got the #1 platter which came a with a tamale which was mediocre and sort of dry, an enchilada which was little more than a tortilla covered in what tasted like doctored canned sauce, a taco which was very greasy and was nothing more than a hamburger inside of a shell (good if it comes from a place that makes them well) and moderately better beans and rice which were nothing special. As far as things go not the worst restaurant I've eaten at in the least but certainly nothing to go out of your way for

  • Natro I.

The one star is for the waitress who was quite nice. I know great Mexican food and this is not it. The chile rellenos were filled with cheese wiz, the beef was flavorless, and my plate was so filled with grease and oozing cheese that I couldn't really identify what I was eating. Que lastima!

  • michelle m.

Nice, friendly server. Good chips. Okay salsa. Dull, greasy, unauthentic, and completely uninspired food. I had a tamale, a taco, and an enchilada. Tamale meat was dry and old-tasting. Taco had a greasy hamburger patty filling. Enchilada was doused in low-quality cheese and more grease. Beans OK. Rice old and dry. Depressingly ugly building. Almost comically pathetic.

Staff was very nice. Food was just okay and the Margaretas were not great. After reading the reviews I was looking forward to eating there so disappointed that it was just okay.

We pass through Lordsburg several times a year and have gotten tired of the bad service & quality at the truck stops so we stopped here for lunch. A lot of the reviews raved about how good the food is but for my party of four, it was only "meh". We ate our food because we were hungry and it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't amazing or even good & we probably will just stop in a different town from now on. The waitress was nice but that's about it

  • Charley C.

Well Green Chile! Wonderful Green Chile! Perfect Chile rellenos! Lovely service, and when I said I wanted to try the red sauce as well, a complimentary red enchilada was given to us! Inexpensive and fun. Yes it is a beat up old building and the facilities are very worn, but I came for the food and will come back now that I have a favorite spot in Lordsburg. Don't let the exterior fool you! The food is real good!

  • Candy P.

This place was pretty busy for a Saturday (seemed like it was frequented by a lot of locals, always a good sign). There were two very busy waitresses so that might account for the very loooong wait. The chips were good, salsa ok, and the margaritas mediocre. I had chicken tacos which were tasty, and hubby had a green chile dish which he thought was very good. We probably shouldn't have continued eating chips until our meal got there, because by the time it got there, we were pretty full. It's kind of "hole in the wall'ish" so don't expect anything fancy!

Found on Yelp. Let me tell you why this place is cool! New Mexico was the first state me and my friend got into out of AZ on our road trip to NYC. We had been on the road about 6 hours, we were starving and this placed looked good from Yelp. We go about a mile off the highway and this looked like a real Mexican food place. As we step in they say sorry we're closed. We go "Ugh, Damn". We bust out our story. We traveling cross country in a U-Haul, on road 6 hrs, starving, have a cat in the truck could we grab something small. They stopped us and were like Yes, of course. Grills and fryers are down but we can make some bean burritos, chile etc, what do you like. So we both get 2 burritos and pay. After we pay they kept asking what else they could get us for the road. Drinks, you need drinks a lady asks? Ya sure. Cool. Then they just kept giving us things, chips and salsa and 2 pieces of pie. They didn't have to let us eat in the first place and they didn't have to do all they did for us. Anyone that provides such great service and just cars about their customers that much gets 5 stars from me any day!

Ate breakfast here- we ordered the ranchero eggs with a side of hash browns. The food was good and moderately priced. What really made this place enjoyable was the service. Our waitress was extremely friendly and personable. The place was very clean including the restrooms. Overall, it was a nice establishment that I would recommend. Plus the exterior has a great look to it!

We stopped at El Charro for lunch today. It was a good stopping point on our way to Tucson. The restaurant was busy so it was a little while before our order was taken. Things speeded up when a new waitress arrived to help out. My wife a I both got a combination plate with beans. Both of our meals were good, but compared to some of our Las Cruces Mexican Restaurants, it didn't quite measure up to some of them.

This review is for The Maverick Room, the bar attached to the restaurant. It's a full bar, with no taps, just beer in bottles, but they do have a decent selection, including a local from Isotopes Brewing, and at only $2.00 to $3.00 a bottle. You can order food at the bar. The folks here all speak Spanish, but they're pretty friendly to outsiders.

  • Chris A.

Ordered enchilada relleno and taco. Ask for chicken instead of beef. The sauces good. Waitress/service good. Decor dumpy. So this is acceptable, but far no where near what you can expect in a major city

Well, we had hoped to like El Charro. It had been recommended by several of our RVing friends. My wife doesn't remember what she had (and it was only a couple of weeks ago). I had the chile relleno, taco combo. They looked good. The chile had the stem on it and the deep fried batter was crispy. But, there was no cheese inside. It was underneath the chile, directly on the plate,...and tasted like sliced American cheese. The taco was a tasteless ground beef patty. (I didn't even finish it). (ETA: I make meatball tacos, occasionally, but they are made with spices and red or green salsa and are spicy and have flavor, these did not,) The ambiance is what it is and I would not have had a problem eating inside if we had not had the RV parked across the road to dine in. The service was excellent and we were allowed to take a "hard copy" menu to the RV before ordering. Plus, the waitress asked if we wanted to try the salsas before ordering. It was spicy but, heck, Hatch, NM is just an hour or so away and we like it hot! I'm afraid we won't be back, and we pass through Lordsburg several times a year. LS

This is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant, and I live in Tucson, surrounded by Mexican food! I have had the tacos, red chili, enchiladas-you name it and it's all good. My favorite is the red chili plate. Every time we visit family in Lordsburg we come here for lunch. The first time I ever tried it I was blown away, it is real NM Mexican food, and I like that better than the Sonoran Mexican food I'm used to at home. I was so happy with our first lunch here that the next day I begged my husband to take me again for our last stop on the way out of town. I even ordered the exact same thing. So good! The red chili salsa is amazing, once you taste it you won't be able to stop eating it! I dream about the stuff....

Food and service was great. Salsa and chips are homemade as well as the guacamole. Prices are very reasonable. Would definitely eat here again.

Best restaurant in the town, and the only place I found where I can have a drink with dinner too. I have tried the tamales, tacos, chips & salsa, and a couple of the burritos. All of the meals were fresh and very flavorful. As everyone on here has said, the salsa is great, definitely among the best I have had (I live in El Paso do that is a pretty big statement). Definitely will be eating here often while on work trip.

I was driving on my way from El Paso to Phoenix when we stopped to get food in Lordsburg, which was pretty much the only town for miles. My choices were El Charro or Kranberrys, so I chose El Charro based on reviews. It was a little whole in the wall, but looked like a nice diner. There is one old lady who takes the orders and one man who helps her. The kitchen is small with a small staff, so the food took extremely long to make. I was hoping to get in and out since we had to be in Phoenix soon. The food wasn't bad. I ordered the taco, tamale, and the enchilad plate. I was somewhat dissapointed the enchilada had no meat, just cheese. The tamale was a bit dry, but the taco was ok. I noticed most people order taco plates. If i go back i would probably order chicken tacos. The prices were reasonable. The workers were nice but are just way too understaffed for such a big restaurant. Its not realy their fault, just be prepared if you don't have a lot of time on your hands.

Ok. So there's some deferred maintenance on the building and inside it's basic, but the waitress was friendly and upbeat. Guacamole is excellent and no. 3 special a feast. Traveling through NM, this definitely a worthwhile stop for good food, cheap price and friendly service.

    (4)
  • Teri S.

Food very good. Red wine bad and served chilled. Price was right. Friendly waitress. Chile Relleno spicy. Not San Antonio Tex-Mex.

  • Kimberley H.

The best green chile rellenos I've ever eaten anywhere are made fresh here. I love everything about El Charro: the most wonderful food, the vintage Route 66 atmosphere, the people who work there, proximity to the highway and that the train runs right in front of it. Do not travel this section of I10 without stopping.

Where to start...the restaurant is filthy. The floors are dirty, food and grime on them. Dust everywhere, baseboards missing, ceiling tiles showing roof leaks and food stuck to it. Light bulbs were missing or burnt out. Smoke from the bar spewing into the restaurant. Now onto the food. I ordered a combination plate with a taco, enchilada, and tostada. I requested chicken and was told "no this cook won't do it" umm I'm the paying customer you make what I request within reason. My husband also had a combination plate. Taco, tamale, and enchilada. His beef taco was a thin unseasoned hamburger Patty cut in half and slapped into a greasy taco shell. The food didn't have much flavor and tasted as if everything was microwaved with the exception of the greasy fried taco shells. Service was OK, waitress was friendly. I left hoping we don't get sick and wanting to go buy bleach to go back to clean it for them. I just can't get over how filthy the dining area is.

Traveling back to Texas we stayed in Lordsburg so looked on Yelp for a restaurant. Based on the reviews, we went to El Charro for dinner. The ambiance leaves much to be desired yet it has a certain small-town charm and family feel. The red chili salsa was fabulous, very spicy but full of flavor. The chili rellanos were light and tasty and the beef burrito excellent. The server was sweet and friendly. We will definitely stop there again next time we are in the area.

Best that Lordsburg NM has to offer! Red chili is amazing. Small town feel, old building with charm and the best darn Mexican food. You will love it!! This place has not changed in all the years I have known it!!

Great food and excellent service! We arrived 9:30pm, just 30 min before closing. Old lady help us very well and all food was fantastic! Little bit of drive from I-10, but well worth it! I highly recommend for everyone!

The service and the food here are excellent. Everything is made to order and the salsa is fantastic! I love spicy food and they don't disappoint. I had the red chili burrito and a beef burrito and I definitely would stop again.

Not sure how I would sum up this restaurant. The decor? Homey? But too large to quaint and not warmly decorated. The food? homey. There were not a whole lot of options in town to get a beer with our food, so even though we were excited to try El Charro, we also chose them on default. After a long day of biking from Duncan, AZ a cold beer was needed. The service was welcoming and warm. The food, hot and tasted good. We were not impressed with the chips contrary to the other reviews. I think my over all problem (which is why I could only give it three stars) is that I am a yankee from the north and just do not know good New Mexican cuisine. Our Mexican cuisine is just different so I am not accustomed to the cuisine here. I would come back if ever in Lordsburg, but not making it a destination.

I'm a Mexican thats been traveling all around US and Mexico, and believe me when i tell that this restaurant, doesent even comes close to mexican food. The service was awful, the bathroom disgusting and the food really bad, the only good thing about this restaurant was my dr pepper. This town isnt big and it dosent have many food options, but beleive when i tell, dont come to this place!

The chicken tacos were very good. It has the run down appearance of an old diner that has been missed by the freeway... but the food is good. Low key service. Good value.

Perfect no frills hole in the wall Mexican restaurant. A little hard to find...take Main St. north to the tracks...turn left, the take the underpass to get north of the tracks. Then weave through unmarked streets to the address on Southern Pacific Blvd. Worth searching for. Great prices. Excellent green chili, home made beans, good rice.

We stopped in on our way through New Mexico and I am glad we did. The original plan was to stop in Deming but the good reviews for this place made us pull off the highway early. At the recommendation of others, I had the red chili plate. My husband had the enchiladas and some of my red chili, as there was plenty of food. Next time I would likely have some of those crispy tacos. The food was very tasty. And we concur that the salsa was very good. The right salsa will bring me back to a place. The rice and beans were as they should be, nothing fantastic, but filling and good. The service was very good, an older gentleman who brought our food quickly but with very few words. My husband struck up a conversation with him when we were done, and he was told that the place had not changed in over 60 years. And, it looks it. It is very retro, with original signage, and it faces the train tracks, probably from a day when the train brought business to restaurants. This restaurant is a little north of the main highway (I-10), so watch for the directions. It isn't hard to find, but you will have to drive a mile or so. It is definitely a good stop for good food when you don't want to spend an arm and a leg or too much time. Now at night, that might be different, as they have a large bar area and it looks like there might be music and/or dancing!

Stopped at lunchtime - not a busy place - on the wrong side of the railroad tracks to be easily accessible. Restroom had no soap. Food was good with a nice spice to the salsa. Service was slow, probably because so few customers meant so few staff.

  • M J.

After a full day of driving, we were hoping to find some good Mexican food and we did. Chips and salsa were good. Enchiladas could have been a little warmer but the rice and beans helped it all go down.

Found this "local place" by accident a month ago while on a road trip. What a find. Red chili salsa is homemade and some of the best. Chili Relleno's are crisp and NOT drenched in sauce...Yea. Good NM Mexican food

Excellent Mexican food; most likely the best restaurant in town. I highly recommend paying a visit to El Charro if you are anywhere near Lordsburg, its definitely an experience.

Saturday night and place was dead. Food was great and service was friendly. For location and type, it was five star.

  • Jim P.

So excited. It looked like the real deal.....but then So disappointed. I have too agree with Carl, the food just didn't live up to the reviews. The chips were good. The chili-verde and salsa just didn't have any depth of flavor or any chili heat. Same for the red sauce. So bummed.

    (1)
  • Carl B.

You've got to be kidding! Has no reviewer ever tasted real and good Mexican food before? Greasy chips, rellenos where you taste the cooking grease, not the chiles. Either this place has gone sadly downhill since the reviewers ate there, or they've badly mis-judged. The one star is for the friendly waitress, not the food.

    (1)
  • Crystal S.

A simple diner with good food, that's been around for over 40 years. What a great stop on a 9 hour drive. If you're driving from the I-10, this is just a few minutes detour from the freeway. It is just over the railroad. I can't handle spicy food, but me sweating over the salsa and green chillies were worth it.

    (4)
  • Maynard G.

I agree with the other reviewers. Good little old Mexican restaurant.

I have been going to the El Charro even before I could walk. It's a close to homemade as any restaurant can get. Do try and stop by!

  • Dana N.

WOW!!!! We stopped here as our 2nd stop on the roadtrip... definitely looked like aliens among the locals there. But OMG the food was so so so fgood! I had a red chile burrito and a cheese enchilada. It was spicy seasoned and delicious! My sister had a Green Chile Enchilada which was yummy and a beef taco which I thought was a hamburger patty in a taco. haha. The chips were sooo fresh hot and amazing, and the salsa a smooth hot blend of chilis. One of our favorite spots stopping cross country. YUM!!!

    (5)
  • Drew G.

Five stars. Fantastic chips and salsa. I had a green/red/bean enchilada. Good, as well. Great atmosphere, the place has been open for over 60 years. I'm pretty sure they haven't changed a thing, which makes the place even more attractive.

  • Ada R.

Stopped here on a cross country trip from Iowa to California. It's EXACTLY the kind of place you hope to find on a road trip - a crusty old diner in a real border town in the middle of the desert. I had a Mexican style breakfast - chorizo and eggs with beans and tortillas and coffee. The tortillas were fresh and piping hot - probably the best I ever had. The coffee served with a cream that was freshly prepared from evaporated milk and something else I can't remember. There was no non-smoking section which ROCKED! I'll always remember this place dearly.

We thought this was a really good find. Great food (try the green chile), nice chips and salsa, decent wine for a happy hour price of 2.50/ glass and very good service. Especially from our waitress who had worked for the family for 45 years! Definitely would go again. It's a favorite of the locals which is always a good sign.

A little hole in the wall but fabulous food!! Best place in town!!! Our waitress was Mari. She was amazing. We even tipped her double because the food she suggested was wonderful. We had read reviews on Yelp and we thought we would not have a good dinner in this town. This restaurant was the only one that had some good reviews so we gave it a shot. Best hamburger I had in years . I ordered with cheese, mayo, mustard and onions. The flavor was sooooo wonderful. The fries are great and Homemade!!. My husband had the red chili enchiladas and he was in heaven. The chips were homemade and so tasty. Salsa is great but if you get seeds a little hot for my taste. If we ever come back to this town we know where to eat. Thanks Mari !!!!!

I've driven through Lordsburg multiple times driving between Texas and Arizona and I used to think there was nothing to eat in the entire town, until this time when I discovered El Charro. This place is awesome!!! Seriously. I love everything about it, even the 1960s-era lost highway diner feel, and the cool outer facade, and especially the great Mexican food. Most highway-town Mexican food these days is awful, but the food at El Charro reminds me of what Mexican food restaurant food used to taste like when I was little-- not fancy but fresh, and not greasy. I had chile rellenos and enchiladas with a side of beans, and I cleaned my plate. It was so good I even ordered a burrito to go to eat later. The service from the young waiter was genuine and excellent. Another charming thing about El Charro is that if you want to have a beer with your meal they seat you on the bar side, which looks exactly like the restaurant side except it has a lounge attached. The bar played the Eagles as the sun went down over the railroad outside and I felt like I was in a very cool movie.

Passing through NM and decided to stop here for dinner based on the Yelp reviews. It specializes in Mexican and American. My husband chose the #2 from the Mexican menu and I got the sweet bread from the American menu. What can I say, I'm a sucker for offal. The food came out pretty quickly and piping hot. The #2 was a combo plate of a taco, green chile tamale, enchilada, tostada, rice and beans. It was all pretty tasty. Their salsa is also really, really good. Very fresh, just like the veggies that were on the tostada and taco. The sweet bread were pretty tasty too. A bit over battered and undercooked, but the batter was nice and crispy. A lighter batter would most likely solve both issues. My sweet breads came with soup, fries (or mashed potatoes), toast, and a side of beans. We also had two ice teas. Our total came out to about $23, which is a pretty good deal for all the food we got. All-in-all it was a solid meal for a great price. However, I will add that the food was a bit under seasoned for my taste. So, I would give it 3 1/2 stars for the food. But the service was so friendly, attentive, and quick that the restaurant as a whole gets four stars in my book.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization.
