First note: Bring cash or a check as they do not accept credit or debit cards. My husband and I are spending the summer in the Cloudcroft, NM area and have visited the Western Bar/Restaurant four times in the past two weeks ~ two times for breakfast on the restaurant side and two times for dinner/drinks on the bar side. Breakfast was very good, as was the service. I highly recommend the Chilaquiles with red sauce! For dinner/drinks, the restaurant turns into a completely different place. The service is HORRIBLE in the evenings on the bar side. We went in this past Sunday evening (6/16/13) and seated ourselves as no one was behind the bar nor was there a waitress on this side of the restaurant/bar. We waited more than ten minutes and I then went to the bar to order our drinks. Our drinks arrived within a few minutes and then the waitress/bartender completely ignored us for the next hour. We were not brought a menu and would have ordered food had anyone bothered to bring us a menu or even check on us. We also never received a check/ticket. We knew approximately the costs of our drinks so we left money and a tip (which was very generous on our part considering the lack of service) on the table and left. One more note ~ both bathrooms were disgusting. The trash cans were full and both smelled awful. There was trash (a couple of paper towels from the bathrooms and some toilet paper) on the floor in the hallway between the two bathrooms. The ladies room was just about out of toilet paper and I would have told somebody about this had anyone checked on us. There was also a surgical glove with something (Vaseline like substance) on it in the ladies room. Half of the glove was in the trash can and half of the glove was stuck to the wall. NOT appetizing, to say the least! In summary, the breakfast food and service is above average but the bar side of the establishment at night is HORRIFIC. We will eat breakfast there again at some point in the next three months but will never go there again in the evenings.

The restaurant is good, a solid B+ or A- café. Fairly diverse menu: Stakes, burgers, Mexican, token sea food; salads are fresh but uninspired. Quick service once you get in, there can be a sort wait on weekends. The bar is a trip back to 1947. Don't miss it.

We just spend a long weekend in Cloudcroft and ate at the Western every night we were there. EXCELLENT FOOD! The quail is SO good and much less expensive than what you would pay for it in Central Texas (where I'm from). The mexican food is also great - wonderful red sauce! The huevos rancheros are the best I've ever had. The service was great, the people were friendly and best of all - there's a bar right next door!! We'll definitely be back.

A small, western-style bar with an attached restaurant. Restaurant section is small, yet family friendly. Service is brisk, food is good. Seems to be popular with locals and tourists. Located on Burro in the old-town section of Cloudcroft, it is close to shopping and the local hotel. Definitely worth a visit.

It's not great and it's not bad.. Just what you would expect from a small town cafe. We had breakfast there.no other place was open in town. Such a cute town. Wish it wasn't so early would love to check out all the shops.

The food is pretty good. Good service. However it's the only place to eat after 8 and it closes at 9. Also can drink until bar closes at 1. Women bar tenders very unfriendly to non locals!

Excellent service and really great food! They were busy and still fast. The quail and fried okra were fantastic. Good atmosphere. Friendly people. I will return. It's kinda like diner food but better. They have a great selection of beer.

Cloudcroft is a cute little mountain town. Stopped here after doing the Osha Trail down the hill. The ambiance is unimpressive, the waitresses are friendly. I got the Mexican combo, which included a Taco Bell beef taco, cheese enchilada, pork tamale, and chile relleno. The chile relleno was by far the best. I also got it with christmas sauce, both red and green. For beer they do have a selection from Santa Fe brewing. Other than that its shitty domestic draft. Overall worth trying if you're in the area. But bring cash, they don't accept credit cards.

The food is not the best. I ordered the fried chicken, and the green beans were not very appetizing. The baked potato was ok. The chicken was sort of dry but overall ok. They don't accept credit cards though. It's not the best place.

Lower your expectations put on a mask to stifle the smoke from the bar next door. Only place to eat when you are in the village. Our group had Mexican food, burgers, beer and a not so great Rita but it was vittles, that means snacks for those not from these parts. Service kind and expedient. Wish I had tried breakfast, that might be the ticket to liking this place, competition is needed.

Went here for an early lunch. For seating, you can choose between the unremarkable restaurant area or the more rustic (and dark/dingy) bar area. My gf and I chose the latter because we found the hint of cigarette smoke more bearable than the overpowering aroma of greasy breakfast food that was present in the restaurant area. The food was OK. We shared a Mexican platter, which included a DELICIOUS chili relleno (I might go back sometime just for that), a dry-ish tamale, and a decent cheese enchilada and beef taco. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Overall, it's fairly decent/average. Given the limited choices available in Cloudcroft I'll probably be back at some point.

Yikes, what a "meh" experience. We called ahead for a group of 12. It was ready to go but we had the rudest waitress at first, soon augmented with another more pleasant one (thankfully). After getting my drink order wrong, it was replaced with a snarky comment. The food was just okay and at least affordable. The bartender looked right at me and immediately began texting on her phone, leaving me standing. Not going back.

Not a lot of choices in Cloudcroft so after a long day, we decided to stop for sandwiches. They were ok, nothing special. The tator tots were over fried abd the toasted bread a bit over toasted. The club was fine, meat fresh. In all ok for a quick snack, but not worth a trip out of your way....

I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with mixed green & red chile sauces with corn tortillas. I'm pretty sure the corn tortillas were store-bought but they were really good nonetheless. The portion was huge! Ordered the eggs over medium & they were perfectly cooked. Loved the sauces, not sure which one had a kick to it but it was the right level of spice for me. The beans & hash browns were ok but loved the eggs & sauces. The only way I think it could be improved is to put some avocado on it, add some onions to the hashbrowns, & if there were homemade corn tortillas, that would be great! I'd definitely order again. I almost didn't go in initially because walking past the building I could smell cigarette smoke, however, no one smoked in the restaurant & it didn't smell of smoke, & I would definitely know it!

A good restaurant with a full liquor bar attached (or vice versa) The Bar is a local watering hole, usually open until 2am on Saturday, 10pm the rest of the week. I did not want to qualify this as a 'Dive Bar' or a 'Lounge' ;the proper category would be best described as a 'Saloon' in the Western sense. Seems like a fun place to hang out and have a few. The restaurant portion is smallish and clean with lots of wood. Food is mostly down home fare with Mexican food as well. I sometimes get the Quail which is a little pricey (I like to opt for the unusual). Service is always good, the beer cold and the wait staff pleasant. Solid 4 stars...Yee-haw!!!

Good food. We tried here with some friends of ours (who have been afew times) for lunch. Was impressed. The portions were big. My wife tried the huevos rancheros and the plate was massive. I triedthe double meat burger. I loved it. it was so big and I was so full when I left I actually didnt eat dinner that night (which never happens). Floor was a bit dirty (needed more vacuming at some point), and the bar attached (where the bathrooms were) smelled terrible. Good place to go for food if you can avoid the bar side

It's a bar in the mountains...pretty neat actually. A saloon, I should say. Next door is the cafe. It's alright. Nothing much to rave about with the food. The food is mostly Mexican-ish.

Not a lot of choices in town, but nonetheless this place has the market cornered. There is a liquor store, bar, and restaurant - all part of the same building. A few TVs for the game, plenty of beer on tap, super local and friendly too.

I have been here to eat quite often in the last ten or so years. The last two times my husband and I went the food was not good. After the first time we thought it might have been a fluke. The next time my husband got the philly cheese steak sandwich and the meat was tough. I love okra and order it whenever I see it on the menu. The breading almost seemed stale and lacked flavor. We probably won't go there again for a while and will find another local favorite to eat at when up in Cloudcroft.

This is a touristy western-themed bar in a touristy town so don't expect much and you'll get what you expect. The place is equally divided into two sides - a typical barroom which was pleasant and reasonably authentic (with a large group room in the rear); and a brightly lit add-on dining room that had all the warmth and charm of a Denny's. It started off on the wrong foot when our waitress didn't have a clue what beers they served. Duh, it's a bar. That is about as basic a task for a server as you can get. I had a taste for fried chicken but was concerned it was going to be too much food for my appetite. I was intrigued that a bar like this in a remote mountain-top tourist town would have things like trout and quail on the menu and both could conceivably be awesome local fare so I asked the deer-in-the-headlight waitress if the trout was local caught and she said no, she thinks it's frozen. I asked if the quail was local and, frankly, I don't think she knew what a quail is ... she just sorta stared at me. So I fell back on the fried chicken, it's really hard to screw up fried chicken. You guessed it, yep they did. There were "4" pieces. The breast was about the size of a small hamburger patty. It was dry and almost completely tasteless. How can you make fried chicken tasteless??? Of the remaining three pieces the thigh had no meat on it (I don't know how that's possible), the leg was as big as my thumb and the wing had to have come off a hummingbird. The side rice tasted like Rice-a-Roni and the green beans were canned. The green salad was adequate. I could forgive the bad food if the ambience was a fun, rollicking western bar where we could kick back and enjoy some brews but no, the place was like a morgue. What a terrible waste. Warning: they don't take credit cards!

We had the lunch special green Chili stew and grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch. Our friends had nachos and Santa Fe chicken the Santa Fe chicken was not very good at all. Service was ok stick to the specials!!

Drinks review only: Upon exploring the town of Cloudcroft (which took about five minutes...nice place), I decided to grab a brew or two before heading back to Alamo. Being that this is seemingly the only place in down, the decision wasn't hard. I bellied up to the bar, and the very friendly bartender was immediately there to help. I wanted something local, and got a Santa Fe IPA in can. I spoke with some of the others at the bar, which seemed split between regulars and visitors. Later, I switched to a Green Chile beer that was fantastic. During happy hour, each drink was something like $3 - excellent. Seems like the kind of place that would pour strong mixed drinks too, but can't confirm. The people next to me ordered food and it looked/smelled good, but I didn't have any food myself.
