Becky’s Drive In Restaurant

Becky's is somewhat of a landmark in Carlsbad. Everyone grew up on Becky's Root Beer and Susie Q's. I love this place and come here every time I'm home. I still can still remember the name of my favorite carhop. The food is consistent I highly recommend!
I'm plagued with my father constantly talking about his glory days at Becky's-- so this place has been around for a while. I ordered nachos (I didn't really like them, they had fake cheese rather than shredded cheese like I had expected) so I would not recommend them. The tacos, chocolate milkshake, and hamburgers that were included in our order were delicious. It is a drive in (kind of like sonic) so if you are expecting a sit down restaurant I would look elsewhere.
Best homemade corn dogs ever. No joke, you will wake up in a cold sweat craving them in the middle of the night.

Simply amazing! We stopped here because of the previous Yelp reviews on a 2-night stay in Carlsbad as we move from KS to TX. My husband was dubious at first but was raving about the place so much by the time we left (uncharacteristic of him, btw), we seriously considered delaying our drive to TX tomorrow by a few hours so we could come back for lunch on the way out of town. We got there during happy hour (3-6pm) which meant cheaper appetizers and beer, a bonus we weren't expecting. The beer selection was great; my husband was pleased to find not one but TWO stouts on the menu, a rarity in most restaurants these days. The poblano cheese fries were outstanding - tons of green chili gravy and melted REAL cheese, not that fake cheesy sauce stuff you get at most places, enough to drown the fries which was perfect. For the entree, we split the 10oz New York Strip and it was outstanding - my salt-fiend hubby didn't even pick up the shaker, the rub on it was that good, and so juicy... I don't know why anyone would tarnish it with the offered A-1 or Heinz 57 sauces; we ate it straight up and wished we had more, though it was a good thing we split because there was still the green chili grits to enjoy, and seriously, people are not kidding when they rave about them. I haven't tasted grits that good in over a decade, and he had NEVER had grits that he actually liked before until now. As stuffed as we were, we could not resist the home-baked German chocolate cake they had on special for dessert... oh my, 3 layers, super moist, delicious frosting... even if I weren't almost 8 months pregnant, I'd have been waddling out of there, hehe. The ambiance is really nice in there; they have an old-school looking wood full bar area in the back, a semi-private section of the dining room on the opposite side, and then the main room. The tables are built on solid wood bases, which is probably a minor detail to most folks but I appreciated it. And a small but welcome detail in the bathroom is they have a shelf in the stall you can put a bag or to-go box on, not just a hook. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive, and we were in and out on a Friday evening without any delays. Overall, we wish we lived closer so we could come back; not sure when we'll ever be out this way again, but we highly, highly recommend it!!
When we first saw the place, it seemed closed from the outside. But don't be fooled! It's been open over a year and has already earned "tastiest eatery" in Carlsbad, at least according to us. When we went for dinner, it was filled with mostly locals but is a great tourist spot. The food was delicious--best buffalo chicken sandwich of my life, no lie. Chicken poblano was also perfect. For a side, you must get the green chile grits. And be sure to try the fried pickles, which come as chips instead of the usual spears. Our top meal during our five-day honeymoon in the southwest!
Simple but tasty pub grub. Everything was fresh and hit the spot. The wedge salad was just right, the jammin burger was juicy, and the buffalo chicken sandwich was crispy with just the right amount of kick to it. Our food came out very fast and very hot. The service was good, and the background music is a good touch in this relaxed atmosphere. If we liced here, we would be back.

I have been coming to Carlsbad to work for 16 years. I work here at least 3 weeks every month and I eat here at least once a week. I have a habit of eating the same thing all the time but that's a good thing because I love the burger and tots. Great tasting burger, it's always been great. Try it you will like it.
Very poorly designed venue creates difficult situation for service to be on par with the better burger shacks. The drive thru window is a dangerous traffic hazard. Outdoor seating is their best asset. The food is average. The smell of cigarette smoke on the staff working that day was stronger than the smell of anything cooking on the grille.
Ok burgers... fries were not fresh...the green chili burger was lack luster. Kinda pricey. No restrooms...outdoor seating area was nice hence the three stars.

Danny’s Place

Reviews:
I'm from California, which isn't really known for good barbecue, so I didn't really know what to expect when I tried out Danny's Place. Because of this, I was pleasantly surprised to really enjoy the food here! I'm even tempted to say this is some of the best barbecue I've had, but that wouldn't mean much because I haven't had that much to begin with. I ordered the small plate of brisket with a side of coleslaw, which came with bread. Even though this was a small order, I could barely finish half of my order. The small came with 4 slices of brisket, and even though I loved it I couldn't finish more than two pieces! It had a delicious smokey flavor, and combined with the house barbecue sauce it was great. What really blew me away, though, was the coleslaw. It was so creamy, and the lettuce was crisp and fresh. The bread, which was fried in butter making it crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, was also a nice addition. Loved Danny's, and as my first barbecue joint it definitely set a high bar.
After visiting the Carlsbad Caverns, we came here with some family on a Saturday around 2pm. They were busy, but our group of 7 waited less than 20 minutes. This is a very casual, laid back establishment with friendly staff and satisfactory service. They have great options for kids and have no problems making substitutions on your meal. I ordered the choice of 2 meats dinner plate with brisket and pork spare ribs with fried okra and coleslaw as sides (around $14). While the meat was delicious, I'm not the biggest fan of sweet BBQ. However, I had a taste of the sausage which balanced out the sweetness of all the other BBQ. The variety of BBQ is great. The sides were good, but I tried some of the potato salad and it's definitelty just as good...maybe even a little better than the coleslaw in my book. This is a very family friendly restaurant that does not disappoint. Stop by if you're in the Carlsbad area!
We visit Danny's place when we want barbecue. It is a pretty good place to eat. It's pricier than I like to pay for a single meal, but for once in a while, and good barbecue, we'll pay it. The meat is good, the sauce is pretty decent (either the sweet or tangy sauce, though it is often difficult to tell the difference between them while they're still in the bottles), and the sides are good. However, the thing that makes this restaurant for me is the coleslaw. That's right, the coleslaw. I haven't ever eaten coleslaw as good as this, and I've tried a lot of slaw in a lot of places. It's very good. It's enough to get me to come back from time to time, just to have that beside my food. The service is fairly decent, though if you go during a busy time, it can take a while to get noticed for drinks and such, but that's common in Carlsbad, unfortunately. The interior is bright, decorated with country kitsch, and comfortable. I like it.

Everytime I've stopped in for a bite to eat my experience has been great! The food is remarkable and their own brand of Bar-B-Q is some good stuff. You won't be disappointed giving this place a try!
Disappointing menu. Over-priced entrees and domestic beers. Beware of the Chop Mix. The only saving grace was the venue; though it is small inside, parking and location are good.
Brisket sandwich and fried okra on the side. The place was 30 minutes from closing, but that didn't seem to phase the service at all. We were a party of 8 on a Friday night and they seated us quickly and got our orders to us rapidly. The brisket was well smoked and the flavor melded well with the BBQ sauce on the table. The buns were buttered and soft. The fried okra was a little greasy, but still edible. Other than the dead animals all over the room, the place has a nice log cabin vibe. It used to be pay at the counter, but they've recently changed that to pay the waitress. Just a heads up to anybody that's eaten here before, but not recently.

Good food. Green chile omelete, no complaints. Also, one evening while needing something more soothing, the club sandwich was a good call. Thick bacon, good veggies, all very satisfying. All in all, a solid diner. Oh, and good pumpkin pie ;)
This place was good for what it was. Walk in, order at the counter, large menu to choose from and you get a lot of food. Before coming here I read previous yelper's comments and so we did end up getting the texas toothpicks, I had never had em before and I'd have to say they were alright. I don't plan on visiting Carlsbad for any reason other than the caverns so next time we visit em, I think we might visit Happy's again too.
Good home cooking breakfast. Almost a hole in the wall but not quite. Worth the stop on the way to the caves!

Cute atmosphere with a great menu! Food was a little pricey, but good. We stopped by for lunch after going through the caverns and sat on the patio. I had the New Mexico Cuban and my husband had the special, a Prime Rib sandwich. Mine was good, but a little dry. He said his was amazing. Service was fairly poor- he didn't come back to check on us until we were finished eating. He did, however, let us know that there was going to be live music that night, and being that there aren't too many "nice" restaurants in the area (mostly diner types) we decided to return for a late dinner. We sat on the patio again. The musician was really good and the place had a great turnout. I ordered a glass of wine and hubs had a beer. They have a fairly extensive wine and beer list- always a plus! For dinner, I had the stuffed poblano. It was presented beautifully and tasted great as well, but was very spicy. Husband had the spicy chicken wrap and a Caesar salad. We had the same server from lunch, but he was much more attentive this go around. We would go back.
Gotta say, this place was wonderful. The staff were very polite, but they were friendly, as well. The restaurant itself is pretty classy. We almost thought we were unstressed, but other people coming in to eat proved us differently. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer. There was plenty on the plate and it looked wonderfully presented. They weren't too soggy or crunchy, but we're nice and thick. The sauce was good, as well. I ordered the green chile burger, which was delicious. It wasn't too spicy, but it had a very good kick to it. It was cooked perfectly. The fries it came with were crispy and we're flavorful. My boyfriend had the daily special, which was a prime rib sandwich. It had so much meat that he had to take some off! All in all, the visit was great. Five stars!
What a wonderful place. We just stopped by, we were immediately seated. Our server was sweet, as well as professional. The meal was perfection... From our crab cakes and poached pear salad to the margarita chicken pops, delicious and finger licking. My daughter loved the New Mexican chicken tortilla soup.

Food was good for a buffet but the service wasn't great. Told The server three different times coke no ice and all three time she got it wrong. Just like any buffet, some things are great and some not so much. For the price it's a great alternative to not making dinner
This was really good, especially for what they charge. And there is enough variety that you are bound to find something you like. I definitely recommend. It also looks like they add new things periodically. Like tonight the chicken meatballs.
This is my preferred stop for Chinese food in Carlsbad. I like the interior, I like the price, I like the service (most of the time), and the food is very good. We've been going here quite a bit throughout the years, and I enjoy it. Sometimes, you have to be a little proactive about catching the servers' attentions, but often, that's during busy times. Most of the time, however, it's easy to catch their eyes to get refills, or whatever. They offer a few American food choices for those who are in your party who don't like standard Chinese-American fare.

So great for early morning burritos to go!!! All different kinds! The spice is there no need for hot sauce on some burritos. The ladies are very helpful in explaining what each burrito is made of and if it may be a little too spicy. Real good Mexican style food!
Don't let appearances fool you. The place may look a little shabby, inside and out, but the Mexican food is The Real Deal. Give it a whirl.
We visited this restaurant last week. The appearance of the outside lol has bars on the windows and doors and its next to shady looking hotel. So if you're looking for an upscale restaurant this is clearly not the place. I was told they had authentic mexican food (not New Mexican) which was just what we wanted so we decided to go in. Service was a bit lacking, but they were very friendly. The chips and salsa with avocado chunks was good then we ordered a combination plate, large chile cheese fries & the enchiladas suizas served with rice, beans, guacamole & sour cream which was also good except for the many flies which we had to shoo away from our dinners.

Chapman’s Restaurant

Reviews:
Giving this spot a 4-star due, mainly, to its location and that area's realities. Carlsbad NM just doesn't offer a lot of choices and, relatively speaking, this one seems to be at the top of the heap. Airlift this restaurant into a more gastronomically competitive setting, and my rating would drop by at least one star. With all that said, this seems to be a new eatery that deserves some time to tweak its formula and stick around in order to cater to the Caverns' tourist set. My party wanted steak and we first went to the Stockyard downtown. If you saw my tip on that place, you know that I was disappointed by the discrepancy between its name including the word "steakhouse" and what it truly is. Anywho, the steaks here were pretty high quality and tasty overall, cooked correctly (a perpetual issue for us, since I like rare and my companion likes medium-well), and were served quickly. The bread was delightful - soft, warm, and a great mix of doughy and firm. I had the steak and shrimp entree, which consisted of a 10 oz sirloin and 3 beer-battered shrimp. My steak seemed to have quite a bit of fat and gristle around the edges, but there was still ample steak there to satisfy me, just felt like I had to trim it myself in order to get there. The shrimp were an excellent complement. My companion had the rib eye, which came out perfect. Greeted at the front door, by a gent in a formal jacket with French-cuffed shirt, he even pulled the chair out for my companion to seat her like a lady (nice touch!). Nice decor, pleasant ambiance, and the staff dresses up the way that you'd expect from an above average restaurant. The meal was billed as coming with a handmade salad with house made dressing, which I was really looking forward to trying. Unfortunately, the staff didn't serve us the salad. Our entrees were brought out within about 5 minutes of the bread and we were too shocked at the quickness to mention that they had forgotten the salads. Besides, what do you do when that happens? Tell them to take the steaks back to the kitchen to rest under a heat lamp while you go get the salads for us? Certainly not! Mentioned the oversight to the server at the end of the meal and they offered to bring out the salads then but my stomach wasn't about to lay salad on top of a steak, rather than doing it the way that nature intended (rabbit food first, then the protein). They offered a comp dessert, but we were pretty tired from a long day and passed on that. Instead, they gave a token comp on a (small) portion of the meal. Sadly, they couldn't offer any wine - they don't have their liquor license yet. A faux pas for a steakhouse, for sure, but I'm willing to overlook it because they're somewhat new and it is a small town. We wound up sticking with water, which was not refilled until after our meals had been completely consumed. Overall, the sins that we endured (forgetting the salads, not refilling the water, lack of wine) were relatively minor and all, in my opinion, fall under the "hey, we're still getting our act together" umbrella a new place should be allowed. If you find yourself in Carlsbad NM, I'd recommend giving this spot a try.
It all depends on what you get, keep it simple. The liver and onions were good if your into that. The deserts are actually delicious, it is our new desert place. Stay away from the tilapia it has horrible. Pico and chips are pretty good. 3.50 for a pint of Stella!
Went to Chapmans with my boyfriend and 2 of the guys he works with in the oil field. My lunch was delicious, chips and salsa was great, and endless sweet tea. My boyfriend's medium rare steak was dropped on the floor and had to be replaced. It took them over 20 minutes, and the rest of us finishing our lunches with him snacking on my fries, before the replacement was going to arrive. We asked to take the other one home for our dogs, so I gather that they figured since we were getting 2 (though one inedible by people) for the price of one, they wouldn't deduct anything off the price- which they should have considering the insane amount of time it took to get the replacement out of the kitchen- rare/medium rare shouldn't have taken that long. Especially when the restaurant wasn't that full. The decor was nice, wait staff was friendly, and prices seemed about right, but when you mess up FIX it. Quickly. He took it home and ended up eating it later since everyone else had finished and we had to get him back to his site.
