Best aspect: open on Sunday, which is why we were there. Food is quite plentiful but bland. There's not much to choose from in the area, so La Fonda is an acceptable option, but don't expect too much flavor.

In our road trip from Texas to California, we traveled through a lot of little towns where your best food option is usually Dairy Queen. We were pleasantly surprised to find a restaurant in Artesia that not only was good for a little town, but downright craveable by any circumstance. The trick here is to not get too creative, and just order what sounds good. I don't remember the name of the dish I ordered, but it tasted like two large enchiladas covered in 7-layer bean dip made fresh. If you find yourself in Artesia, head to La Fonda and enjoy this laid back little restaurant.

It's La Fonda! Service is wonderful! Food is pretty good. They have always accommodated my special request and have never had any issues with their service. Best part...they have Sweet Tea!

We really enjoyed La Fonda. After reading some other reviews I was a little worried , but the service was fast and friendly and the food was good. It's not the best New Mexican food I've had but it hit the spot, and it's way better than the Tex Mex crap we have to put up with in Texas. I will say the red chile had no bite to it, but it's flavor was good. Their Spanish rice was the tastiest Spanish rice I've had--peppery and delicious. Usually Spanish rice is bland. If you happen to be in Artesia, this is a good place to eat.

Went with a friend and her son over Labor Day weekend. Wasn't too busy and we were hopeful. Our waitress was "down homey" and we were hopeful. She took our order and brought us chips and salsa. The salsa should have been our warning... It's from a jar, tastes like Pace. She brought our drinks, two a piece, one for drinking and one for refilling because she said she was too lazy to come back in 10 minutes. Took our order... Friend got 2 chicken breasts, son got chicken strips, and I got red chicken enchiladas with rice no beans. After a standard wait we got our food. Mine was green enchiladas with a huge side of beans. :/. Sent it back. After a very long and aggravating wait I got my food. This was the very irritating part. They took the inside of my green enchilada, dumped it on top of two empty tortillas, and covered it in red sauce. Wtf. Rice might have been good if it hadn't been covered with pepper. I don't know how the enchiladas were. I didn't eat them. Friend said her dinner was ok. Neither of us would go back. Waitress did remove my order from the bill. 2 stars... One for removing my order and one for being honest enough to say you're too lazy to provide good service.

This place isn't bad at all. The reasonable prices and gigantic portions make it a winner. The only downer is that they don't seem to serve alcohol, which might be a problem for some. Still though, the food is good and in a small town like Artesia, that counts.

If there is anyone in particular you are trying to avoid running into in Artesia, New Mexico, just skip La Fonda altogether. After everyone gets out of church on Sunday morning, there are two places they all flock to: La Fonda and Pecos Diamond. I guess if I had to pick between the two I would pick La Fonda, but I would pick Mexican food over a steakhouse most any day. The food is pretty good here, actually. They have a daily buffet that is pretty decent, or you can order off the menu. It haven't really had anything there that I didn't like, but of course I only go a couple times a year. It's a funny little place, with a style all it's own. The service is usually really nice, and for the most part attentive. But you have to remember this is Artesia, NM, so that is to be expected. I have never really had a bad experience at this place, except the one time I ran into the one person in Artesia that I would never in my life want to see. But you can't really blame that on the restaurant, can you?

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food and friendly service. Our server Bryce was very attentive to our needs. My husband ordered the fajitas...which came with all the fixings. He ordered 2 more flour tortillas because there was so much meat. I ordered the shredded beef chimichanga with red sauce. It was huge but I ate it all. The only downfall was we had no room for the sopapillas afterwards. Thank you La Fonda for great food and service.

This place is the best Mexican in town. Low score from me because it's too dark, not clean and fairly slow. The servers push around these silly kitchen carts with food and drinks rather than carrying anything. The carts are usually dirty and shouldn't leave the kitchen. They are also closed at the oddest times. There's a reader board upon entering that sometimes says pretty tacky things. Needs an update badly. A cleaner kitchen would equal less bacteria. Unfortunately, eating at this restaurant never ends well for those of us with a sensitive stomach. Clean it up...light it up. Pretty common need in Artesia.

I ordered a chicken chimichanga and in my humble opinion the food did not taste like most authentic New Mexican cuisine. The atmosphere is really cool and I appreciate the decor and the New Mexican pictures. The staff was extremely kind to me and made recommendations I appreciated!

This is an ok setting as far as atmosphere is concerned. Only being here about :15 minutes I do have one quick suggestion..... Make sure you have your drink BEFORE you start eating from the buffet. I was halfway through my plate before my drink arrived. If you've never had Mexican food before this is a good place to start. That way anywhere else you go the food will taste better. A good amount of the food tasted bland and some were even a mystery. I thought I was getting a chili type concoction. You can imagine my surprise when I found out it was suppose to be "Enchiladas"!!

First time here. Had seen mixed reviews so was a little weary. I ate the asado plate a really enjoyed the asado, as for the rice , was dry and didn't try the beans. The salsa tastes like Pace for sure. A lot of tomato, jalapeños taste pickled. Not good. My husband ordered the carnitas taco plate. He said his only complaint was the the tortillas tasted like they were heated in a microwave as did mine. Service and ambiance were good. Not from Artesia but would recommend it. ;)

  • Bryan T.

Definitely the best Mexican style food in Artesia, NM. I love the carne asada. The service is always spot on whenever I go (which is usually with a larger group). If they served alcohol it would get 4 stars.

Limited vegan option but very good taste in customized veggie Mexican food . Good ambiance, very good service 3 stars from veggie guy else could be more

So disappointing. Ordered off menu the chile rellenos cheese and beef. Full of seeds, thick deep fried coating which was soggy and tepid. The carpet was filthy. Do not recommend.

Food was just ok. I want Mexican food so I expect good salsa unfortunately I'm pretty sure it was pace picante. And I like food with flavor, this was bland. Such a let down. People, prices and service were good

This has to be the worst Mexican food in the nation. Slow service, rock hard chips, salsa tastes like ketchup, I don't think they even cook with any spices, and if you ask for hot sauce you will only get Tabasco. What type of Mexican restaurant doesn't have a variety of hot sauce? I would go hungry before I went back!!

    (1)
  • Melissa E.

The service was prompt and courteous. The tea and chips were filled and refilled to your hearts content. The food, however, was average. The portions are large. The salsa tasted like canned salsa or like Pace. They do not offer a mexican-style soup on their menu. Overall it was an okay experience.

This place has great service and the best sopapillas in all of New Mexico, and they are a bargain. Go Bulldogs!

  • Andrew A.

The place is nice and I'm sure the have a good margarita. The food unfortunately is comme ci comme ca .I ordered the fajita plate. They covered the plate in vegges. The meat was ok but not skirt steak. True fajitas do not need to be covered or smothered or anything of the sort. The meat speaks for itself; everything else is garnishment. The salsa did have some heat so that was a plus. The service was OK. My search continues for good Mexican food in New Mexico.

If your a fan of mild Pace Picante, cheese whiz chile relleno, dry beans and hypertension inducing rice this place is for you.

Talk about fast, friendly, service!! I totally liked it here my food came out fast, hot and delicious! I order the chimichgana plate it was great!! My service was soo nice!! I would come back!!

  • Bobby P.

Not bad, not great. The salsa has to he Pace. The rice was not very good. Had an adobada burrito with red that was very good. The pork was well flavored and cooked very well. The sauce on the burrito was mostly good and the beans were good. I would come back while in town and would recommend if you're OK with it not being amazing, but good.

Simple atmosphere and friendly waitstaff. Food is basic Tex-Mex, unremarkable in presentation but unexpectedly flavorful and served hot. If you're in Artesia for the night this will get you through. Would definitely go again. Oh, no liquor served here...just an FYI...

On our recent stay in Artesia, we asked our hotel where is the place to go for good Mexican food. The hotel manager said there was no good Mexican food places around and told us to go to Buster's. As we were on our way to Buster's, because of the recommendation, there was a sign saying they are closing on July 13th. My husband and I decided to ignore the manager's suggestion and go to the Mexican restaurant I found on Yelp which was La Fonda. La Fonda WAS DELICIOUS! The manager of the hotel had no idea what he was talking about. The Carne Asada platter was the best I have had in a long time. The other meals were also fabulous. The service was a little slow but we were on vacation and didn't mind. We would definitely eat there again.

I arrive at the restaurant around 1pm. An older gentleman and lady were at the table next to me. As I was seated, the gentleman got up and walked away. Several minutes later he returned and his wife said she'd be right back. I assumed they were using the restroom as neither returned with a plate from the buffet. So...two elderly people each visited the restroom and I was STILL waiting for service. I left a note, "Waited 15 minutes. I'm leaving." A two-star rating only because this might have been an unusual day for them. Will I visit this place again? Probably. Any time in the near future? Nope.

I can't echo the bad reviews as I get a pretty good experience every time I eat here. If you want the best experience, go for the lunch buffet as the food is freshest then and you won't have to wait for it.

oh man where do i begin??? we had just finished visiting the carlsbad caverns and we were extremely hungry! We were a big group of 10 (two kids). The restaurant closed at 9pm and we got there around 7:45pm. This might have not been the ideal time to eat here for i believe our food came from the bottom of the barrel. First off, the place needs a remodel inside. Its kind of dingy in there. They sat us down quickly and we ordered our drinks. It took a while to get them and some were actually wrong. The waitress took our order and she memorized it all. Which would have shown skill, but she managed to mess up our orders when she brought them out. The beans were hard and cold, and something funky was up with the ground beef. The ground beef in the enchilada, taco, and sopapilla was all bad. One of us ordered the pollo loco (grilled chicken breast) that turned out to be raw. Even one of the kids who loves food pushed her taco plate aside and said,"this tastes weird" Like i said, it was the end of the night so this could have been bottom of the barrel stuff but still give us a break!! Only two people liked their dishes and they came from the American side of the menu. So all the mexican dishes we ordered were just terrible. The owner took off the dishes no one touched off the bill and she brought out free sweet sopapillas for everyone. Basically, i would never come back here! worst mexican place ever THE END

I am from Carlsbad, some 36 miles to the South. I moved away to France when I was 17, but would come up to La Fonda with a schoolteacher friend of mine at least once a month because the restaurant's food was so outstanding. I have to report, however, that it WAS outstanding. I recently went with my sister and nieces and it was just awful. The Guadalajara, which I had always ordered, was overly salty and the guacamole did not taste fresh. Even the rice was bad (undercooked). My sister did not eat 1/2 of her Chimichanga (my schoolteacher friend always had it and it WAS delicious). The girls had American food and said it was okay. It really is true: you cannot ever go back home.

It's basically a family Mexican buffet. Sadly no booze (Mexican without a margarita - really??!!). Absolutely NOT memorable, not tasty - was tempted to give 3 stars because was affordable - but no I think not.....

We came to La Fonda in December from California and I have to say it was awesome! From the buffet, the best chile relleno I've ever had and a filet medallion in a black pepper sauce that melted in my mouth. It's an older restaurant so don't expect a ton in the ambience arena, but I'll be back

I was taken here while visiting for work. My host said that if I'm at all hungry this is the place to go... And, I'm going to have to agree! The lunch buffet looked decent but it was rather generic and nothing jumped out at me. I decided on the Beef Enchilada Plate with Red Sauce. IT WAS HUGE! I was very full and very satisfied at La Fonda. I was also curious how every time my tea was refilled it was by a completely different person. Seriously, I think I saw 43 people fill me tea that day -- it was great.

I grew up in Artesia. Thank you I appreciate your sympathy. There are two things that people think of when they hear "Artesia": Football and La Fonda. I'm not going to bother reviewing the former, but as for the latter here it goes: It's good, but not the best. It is however, original. That is how I believe it got to be of such an Artesian cultural phenomenon. Don't ask me why (because I have no idea) but once in a while I get the craving for some La Fonda. I've heard that over the years it's been through a few changes, and the last time I ate there was probably 4 or 5 years ago. But if you haven't been here before and you unfortunately find yourself stuck in the crappy little town of Artesia, NM; then you should definitely go here. Unless you want alchohol, and then you should go to the Wellhead, because this town has some silly law about drinking and eating at the same place. Come to think of it, if La Fonda served booze, I might actually give them 5 stars.

This is right across the street from the hotel we were staying in. I was expecting a little more in ambiance and the food, but it was good enough for 4 stars. I had a huge plate with all kinds of stuff but I really loved the chile relleno. Our waitress was super. And we all loved the sopapillas with sugar sprinkled on them.

Has a pretty good buffet but ordered off the menu and was very good home cooked style mexican food

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
