Old truck stop diner. Decent food, big portions, family owned, great jukebox, alright coffee, and a great atmosphere. When I started going to the Barn over ten years ago, the main dining room was the smoking section which is at least 6 times as big as the non smoking section. Now it's all nonsmoking, but it hasn't lost any of the charm. My friends and I started going to the barn before high school 4 times a week - eating burritos, drinking coffee, and smoking cigarettes. We used to get in and out of this joint for under $5 with tip. The prices have gone up, but not by much. I love this place and have since day one. It's diner food people and you can't beat it. The green chile is great smothered over the breakfast burrito with bacon. The waitresses are great and will keep the coffee comin' all day. Plus it's great for people watchin'. Old cowboys, blue collar workers, families, everything. The Mule Barn welcomes all. Hell, I've even sat a a big table with strangers when the joint was full. Welcomed in like I was part of the family. A breakfast burrito at The Barn is always a must have when I come back to town. Make sure to try it when you go to ABQ. A little off the beaten path, but worth it.

Try the chicken fried-stack. this place is a hidden jewel it's a little out of the way but the price and portions make it worth it.

After reading all the rave reviews about this place a friend and I went for lunch (who both have been craving a good chicken fried steak after leaving TX). I was very disappointed. We decided to split the chicken fried steak because it was so big. After we took one bite, we looked at each other and wondered where was the flavor. The gravy and steak had little flavor and the gravy had the consistency of glue. A huge let down, to say the least. The mashed potatoes were salty and ehhh as well. The menu advertises home made cakes but none were available and all the pies are not fresh. Maybe other items on the menu are awesome, but for an authentic chicken fried steak, I'm still on the prowl.

CAN WE SAY, " COWBOY BREAKFAST! " They have been in business for more than 50 years. They must be doing something right? There portion size's are ridiculously huge, in an outstanding way! If want Ol School Albuquerque feel, come here and order some Waffles!

Unassuming and extremely good diner food. The restaurant was clean and pleasant, quaint and homey feeling. I went on a Friday night and got the all-you-can-eat fish and chips and barely finished the initial order. The fish was light and delicious and the fries were very flavorful. For desert my brother and I split a quarter watermelon, which was a) the only time I've seen that offered and b) excellent. The waitstaff was nice, but the place was busy so I had little expectations. Everything on the menu looked good, and I hear the chicken friend steak will knock you down.

After reading the other reviews of this place, I begged my husband to make the LONG drive across town to eat here for dinner. Kind of wish I hadn't. When we first walked in, the "hostess" barely looked at us. After standing for a few minutes she told us to sit wherever we wanted....and never thought to at least give us some menus. The place was almost unbearably hot, no AC. There was an incredible amount of flies circling around us at every moment. We sat in a booth in which the seats probably had not been cleaned in 10 years (old fries and bits of food....YUCK!) I tried my best to overlook all of this because I believed that the food would be fantastic. Nope. I ordered a Mexican combo plate (cheese enchilada, beef burrito, beef taco, beans and rice). The cheese in the enchilada wasn't melted...you could tell it was the shredded variety (which is how it should be, I know, just needed to be MELTED, or have the appearance of being cooked). The beef in the burrito and the taco was loaded with grease, which was dripping down my arm. On the plus side, the taco shell was light and crispy, the best part of the meal by far. The rice was very dry and the beans had no flavor. I was so disappointed! I could've made that exact meal at home....it shouldn't have been called "Mexican food". It was like a "Back East" version of Mexican food. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars is because our waitress was very nice. It would probably help a bit if they attempted to drain the beef.....and add some seasoning to the bland food. I'm so disappointed :(

I lived in Kirkland, Washington for a year and although a very beautiful place to live, finding a good diner was difficult. I looked forward to business trips to Spokane to eat at Frank's Diner. It's awesome so stop by if you're ever in town! Murphy's reminds me of a lot of Frank's. There's a nice hometown feel when you walk in the door. Locals everywhere with a very comfortable and casual environment. The food's delicious, the servings are generous and the prices are reasonable. If you're ever in Albuquerque and want a good meal stop by Murphy's, you won't regret it.

Murphy's is good, cheap, and has huge portions. A great place to get a breakfast burrito with good chile on it.

It's been at least 15 years since I've been here. I can't really remember that visit, so I'll review based off of my recent visit. The food here was amazing. My wife and I decided to send the kids off to school and grab a quick bite to eat. We live in Rio Rancho, and were in the mood for something different. When walking in to the right side of this restaurant, we could immediately tell this place had it's regulars. We sat ourselves and were greeted right away. Each patron happily greeted others as they arrived and as this left. The menu was very basic, which is what I would expect from a dive like this. We ordered the huevo rancheros with red and green, over medium eggs and a side of pancakes to share. When we both took our first bite, we didn't speak much after that. The food was so good, we forgot we were there with each other. The home fries were amazing, the red and green chili was amazing. I've never had this dish with a flour tortilla on the bottom, it's usually made with a corn tortilla. It was excellent. The pancakes.....heaven. They were crispy on the edges, and soaked up the butter and syrup as it was poured on. Now our server had a VERY dry sense of humor. He didn't talk much, didn't smile and showed no expression. I've had worse at other places, but the ladies clearing tables were very friendly and liked by the many patrons in the dining area. The cashier was very bubbly and thanked us for eating there. WE WILL BE BACK.

Dirty place...floors had food everywhere, never was swept up the entire time we were there. Had to flag our waitress down several times, people getting the orders that arrived well after us. The food? Well, let's say I hope we don't get sick. Burnt toast came out a full 15 minutes after our breakfast. They are supposedly famous for chicken fried steak...it was gross. Soggy with bacon grease and tough. Cross this place off our list!

You come here more for the atmosphere and vibe than the food itself. Which is not to say that the food is bad, per se, it's just nothing special. What I'm talking about re: vibe, is the wide, open layout, the old booths that have been around forever, the faded linoleum. Probably constructed in the 50's, there are big plate glass windows looking out onto the parking lot, where hitching posts still stand by the parking blocks. Most folks that pop in here have likely been coming in for decades. It's that kind of place; you grow up with it, and even though there are "better" places out there, it's familiar and unchanging. I'll be back, because I am convinced that there is something that this place makes which is outstanding. Half the fun will be coming in just to find it.

First time. Looks like a dive but every table was full. Parking lot was telling. A mix of old 70's cars, some Junkers, some BMW's and mini vans. Al walks of like come for the food. We had breakfast .... This place come very recommended. The pan akes are big and they are ok but our family said we wouldn't be back. Food wasn't very good. Very friendly staff but that doesn't help 1/2 hour later when you have to run to the bathroom. Cute place, great staff, just not for us, food was a let down.

One of the few remaining restaurants left from the 40's It's is a dated restaurant but with the new owners bringing it to speed real fast, it's a place to be. Talks of WiFi and new furniture, and with the new owners greeting you with a smile and a kind word, it is a new favorite hang out for us. True New Mexicans know this place and will be better than in the past. Fast food service and so dang TASTY it's worth a little drive. It's a piece of Americana that's rapidly becoming lost among the chain restaurants. It's the kind of place where if you go often, everybody knows your name. Remember Albuquerque SMILE IT GIVES YOUR FACE SOMETHING TO DO!

I feel like I stepped back into the past and it's not a bad thing. I ate at diners like this growing up in the Midwest and really like the atmosphere here. The old sloping ceilings, painted cinder block walls, the tread on carpet, old tables and chairs in other situations would make me cringe but here it all fits. Bring me a thick layer of sausage gravy to coat the buttery biscuits, add in some eggs and bacon on the side and I'll relive breakfast in middle America the way farmers and ranchers ate before a hard day outside. Ok, enough nostalgia. The biscuits were very good. The Gravy didn't have as much sausage as it should, but I like a a very thick sausage gravy which is rarely available at a restaurant. The eggs and bacon were cooked well and tasted good. The bacon in particular was nice and crispy without being burnt which is my favorite. I will be back which means the place did its job.

This is such a great dive. The breakfast was great and it had a real small town country feel to it. The French toast was good and did the job but the side of bacon was awesome. 5 pieces. I'm a huge bacon fan and anytime I can get just straight bacon on a plate I'm won over. The meal was a great hangover cure and the atmosphere was low key. The place was incredibly busy on a Sunday morning but I didn't feel like we were being ignored. The parking could be better but I drive a super-sized SUV, so some of that is my problem.

I had a great brunch. Typical American diner. Had the hot turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. Great prices. Love the atmosphere, dive like with vintage decor. Finished it off with a huge cherry pie slice a la mode.

This place is the essence of the North Valley - home cooked comfort food! I had the SW Roast Beef sandwich and it was delish. Definitely a spot for the locals but they greet and serve you like part of the family if it's your first time. Nothing fancy about the interiors - a mix of tables and booths. I'll be back because their breakfast is calling my name.

  • Janet S.

The worst hot turkey sandwich I've ever had. The chicken fried steak was huge, full of grease & not crispy at all. Pounded super thin. Not what we had hoped for. & the staff didn't know anything about the specials. They had to ask the chef, I guess.

Really enjoy visiting Murphy's Mule Barn whenever we're in the Albuquerque area. As other reviewers have mentioned, this place is dive material and is not for those looking for a "fine dining" experience. I mean, how cool is it to walk into a restaurant for breakfast and hear Lynyrd Skynyrd playing over the speakers? The tables and booths are rustic (some tables are particle board), none of the mugs or flatware match, and the *artwork* hanging on the walls is second hand... but those are some of the features that make this place so cool. The biggest feature of coolness, however, are the breakfasts (have not been for lunch). I've enjoyed every meal I've had here, but have limited my selections to the huevos rancheros and the bacon breakfast burrito. Both are tasty and worthy of New Mexico presentation. The chile (have had only the green here) is not too hot, staying more in the mild to medium range. I tend to like chile to be flavorful rather than tongue scalding spicy hot. The burrito, on my last visit, was not piping hot (wasn't cold, just could have been hotter), but was still loaded with flavor. Was also loaded with bacon - nice to see, as some places just sprinkle a bit of bacon here and there in their burritos. Love how they spread the green chile sauce over the burrito and then douse it with melted cheese. Serving sizes are huge and you won't walk away hungry. The servers we've had have been very friendly and attentive. The coffee is so-so (which, imo, is what you find in 90% of the restaurants out there). The patrons are down-to-earth working class folk who know where to get a good, inexpensive meal (breakfast burrito is only $5.80, and like $6.95 if you add meat).

What they lack in service they make up for it in the flavor of their food. Manager very apologetic and sincere. If your by yourself make sure to get a table instead of sitting at the bar or you'll regret it and it will ruin your experience. Trust me I eat here all the time....

The Mule Barn has been serving food for over 50 years. It may win no prizes for decor or modernization, but its food is outstanding, good value, large portions and as an Englishman, I find the Fish and Chips are excellent, Famous for it's chicken fried steak which is larger than the plate it is served on. However, all the things I have tried are great including, Liver & Onions, Burritos, and Sandwiches. If you find yourself nearby pop in, you won't be disappointed.

The chicken fried steak is made from scratch and is about the size of a small pizza (see posted pic). Their prices are dirt cheap and the waitstaff is unfailingly friendly. No further commentary necessary. EDIT: Here's a scan of their menu: scribd.com/doc/127966179…

Murphy's Mule Barn holds a special place in my heart like most people who live and breath the valley air. My father would take our giant family here on saturday or sunday mornings for breakfast. It was a place he could feed a family of 7on a budget. I have very many memories of time spent with my family, stuffing our faces with giant portions, and being loud obnoxious children with my siblings. It's a great atmosphere for families, especially those with young children. It is decorated in old western memorabilia that takes you back to a time when things were much simpler. When I was younger I would eat just about anything. I was the opposite of a picky kid. Brie, mushrooms, dirt, whatever, I would eat it. So, Murphy's was a great place for me. My parents could feed my bottomless stomach and still find something for my picky siblings to eat. However, as I grew into a blossoming teenager and my tastebuds developed a bit, Murphy's stopped being my favorite place. Their New Mexican food is all tomato based versions of any New Mexican flair. It's runny, murky, spiceless, and flavorless. Their plates are ginormous, but it's mostly because you have to eat as much as possible in hopes that the next bite might contain some flavor. It's bland, it's awful, and it's bad for you. Now, I would give Murphy's one star, but I can't. It holds too much sentimental value to be given anything less than two. So, if you have to take out a large family and you're on a budget Murphy's is great. If you aren't pinching penny's and you want something substantial to eat Murphy's is just not the place for you.

Random whole in the wall. I always get the sunrise chicken fried steak, which is green chile and cheese on top of the chicken friend steak. Comes eggs and biscuits and gravy. Very reasonably priced, very low key, and ALWAYS delicious!

I wish I could tell you what the food tasted like. However when I took my wife and two boys out for a late breakfast we never got service. We sat for 15 minutes and watched as others that came in after and sat down were waited on. So i will not be going back to a place that can't even figure out how do day hello and may I get you something to drink!

Was visiting Albuquerque for the first time and wanted a local place for breakfast. We had 6 people and needed to eat fast. This place was great! Large and very tasty portions. Fast and friendly service. Decor and seating was a little rough, but was expected from the name of the place. We went on a Friday morning and got a table right away. I recommend the Murphy Omelet special. Great green chili sauce. Don't miss out.

This place is difficult to review - how do you determine which pros and which cons are more important? And doesn't that kinda make it so interesting that it nixes the cons anyway? Or should it just tell you that you are in the wrong place... It's such a dive, truly, deeply, at it's core. Rickety old tables, which may or may not be clean even after they wipe it down for you. You get the impression of old, sweaty diner from the moment you walk in the door, but it also makes you feel good, because you know it's a place you will love. The mugs for your coffee are already on the table, and they are a truly random collection that either came from a thrift shop or were simply left behind in sketchy rental properties and got appropriated for use here. Lots of Christmas mugs - because who DOESN'T have extra useless Christmas mugs to hand over? Random business mugs, and not all local. Some boring plain ones - and it's really annoying when you get one of those, because you know, you want a weird one. But all come with endless refills - and what could be better than that? (Well, other than better coffee...) Good food, seriously good pancakes, but also some disgusting choices (pizza-sized chicken fried steak). However, since you can order whatever you want - I'd say that's a wash, wouldn't you? And who am I to say that the stuff I find disgusting isn't someone else's idea of heaven? They certainly seem to sell a LOT of that chicken-fried steak! The service is - well, interesting. We have had everything from total lack of interest in our presence to a smiling Flo-like persona, and everything in between. But they have all been willing to answer my ever-present question: of these two items, which would you order? (I can never seem to pick just ONE thing from any menu - drives my husband nuts.) It's a huge space, but often gets packed. Testament to the food, the service or the ability of the average person to overlook certain things for lower prices? In any case, it makes for some awesome people watching. There is a lot to look at in this place, inside and out. It's been around quite a while, and history tends to make it's mark. It's fun to sit and take a good gander while you sip your coffee. Overall, while this is not going to make anyone's top ten food list in the city, this is a fun, decent place to eat with great prices and a truly unique atmosphere. It is surely one of a kind, and exactly the type of place we love to support. Hard working folks run this place, and you should definitely show them your support! It's worth it!

This place leaves much to be desired in the ambiance department. Of course, if you were raised in a small southern New Mexico town like me, you are going to feel like you went home for your 20 year reunion. Truck stop, truck stop, truck stop and what the heck is wrong with that? Luckily, some years back they made customers stop smoking inside. I have to say that Murphy's has the BEST breakfast burrito in town. The burrito will feed 3 people, but I eat the whole thing anyway. Smothered in red and/or green chile and cheese, this burrito spills off of the plate. My neighbor was the only one who would eat there with me, he's a cowboy from Oklahoma and he would order the pork chops and eggs for breakfast. I will never forget when I saw the famous, Chef Jim White in there one morning with the chicken fried steak that was bigger than his plate. The patrons in this place are pretty interesting to watch, I think it could be renamed as the Freak Barn...but I'm not judging, I can actually lick my plate when I'm done and no one will care.

Can I give zero stars? This is my dad's favorite place to eat so unless I want to pay this is where we go. Guess what? I end up paying for breakfast a lot. Yes, that's how much I hate this place. From the greasy food, the dirty dishes, the old smelly patrons, the old toothless waitresses, this is a place I don't even think I would eat at to cure cancer. I feel that my opinion is valid and secure because I have eaten there 3 times. After the third time I made a vow, never ever again.

This is what you classify as a great local place to eat. Has the atmosphere of an old local diner. Great breakfast place. The place packs the people but that says a lot for a place of business. My food was really good and had a great flavor. Waitstaff was really tentative and I never ran out of my drink. Overall I think you should give this place a try and make your own decision whether you would return for the future.

My recent trip to Murphy's was really good. I had not eaten there before although I had heard good things about it. The food was really good and there was lots of it. The service was a bit slow and it took a little longer than I would have preferred to get our food but it was worth the wait once we got it. I definitely recommend this place, especially for breakfast. You will enjoy it for sure.

I was ready to be wowed by this restaurant. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I have always believed it takes special ineptitude to not be able to scramble an egg and produce something edible. Today the cook here reached that level and dare I say may have surpassed it? We ordered off their specials section of the menu. One order of scrambled eggs with diced ham, hashbrown and toast. The other was biscuits and gravy with a side of a scrambled egg. The eggs were liquid and not from lack of cooking, nor were they fluffy like milk had been added. The bland non-egg taste has me believing they cut the eggs with water. The diced ham was typical low end pressed and chopped ham. The hashbrowns were also tasteless until you added way too much salt. The absolute worst thing on the table though was the biscuits and what was supposed to pass as sausage gravy. It looked bad, and sadly tasted worse. This restaurant is often busy but we were not the only ones to walk away from breakfast after just a few bites. Our neighbor table had pancakes with a side of bacon. Half slice of bacon and a couple bites of what looked like good pancakes and he walked before we did. I have never panned a restaurant like this on any review and I hope I am never so disappointed that I have to again. But if you are looking for breakfast in this area, do yourself a favor. Go south of Paseo to Milly's, Jimmy's or even down to a Weck's, but don't waste you money here. It may not cost much, but you may find you overpaid.

We tried it on a whim with a friend visiting from out of town. We are always on the lookout for great dive restaurants. This place has all of the elements to qualify as a true dive experience, except for the food, which was a HUGE disappointment. The pancakes were burnt, the rice was cold, the huevos rancheros were blah, and the bean burrito is almost as good as Taco Bell. To top it off, there were dozens of flies buzzing around. I even killed one that landed on the table. As my out-of-town visiting friend just stated, it has great atmosphere and it's like eating at a barn. Two stars for the atmosphere.

This is a locals gem where you will spot all types of characters enjoying huge portions of home cooked comfort food. Warning: the Mule Barn is in an old gas station with hand painted murals on the wall and all sorts of mule memorabilia decorating the place. I personally find it very charming but to those who are looking for nice ambiance, this is not your place. This is the sort of place where the owner wants her loyal customers to feel at home and that is the way she likes things. I can't say enough nice things about the Barn, my family and I have been coming here a couple of times a month for the past few years (ever since we moved here). My dad loves this place for its liver and onions. He always requests extra onions and the senior citizen discount. Their soups are really amazing, I believe they only make one type a day but are made from scratch. If you have never been here before someone must partake of the chicken fried steak which is about 12-14" in diameter and comes hanging off the platter smothered in white gravy with bread, potatoes, veggies and soup. On fridays they serve all you can eat fish and chips, although I couldn't imagine eating anymore than the initial serving. Mule Barn is one of the few places that serve quality with quantity and I highly recommend anyone looking for some local flavor to come here. This place is CHEAP and judging by the menus, it doesn't look like prices here have changed since maybe the 80's?

So I walk in for a late lunch with my son, the first thing I notice is the furnishings which evoke memories of 60's and 70's cheap diner tables and chairs. We sat down and we greeted by our waiter he gave us menus and got our drink orders. He came back with our iced teas and I noticed that they use a much larger glass than most other restaurants. The tea was not too strong and not too weak, it was just right. We both decided to have the chicken fried steak, I opted for a side salad my son got the homemade chicken noodle soup . The salad was a normal side salad, the soup was very tasty. Our entree came out in a timely manner but OMG this chicken fried steak was the size of a full grown Sasquatches footprint, it was huge! I wish the waiter would have warned us that it could easily feed both of us. Our chicken fried steaks were drenched in a homemade white country gravy it also came with fries or you could also choose mashed potatoes or baked potato. Here's where things start to go bad... The steaks breading was a bit on the mushy side and I suspect its been a long time since they have changed the oil in their deep fryer, there was a definite funk to the flavor that can only be brought on by fryer oil that has passed its prime. When all was said and done we both had only eaten a little of the chicken fried steak before it was too much of an assault on our taste bud to continue. Price wise it was very affordable but the quality was very disappointing . I would have paid substantially more if the food had been acceptable. Although I didn't use the restroom my son did. His words upon returning from the rest room "Jean Claude Van Damme must have been here because both stall doors had been kicked in" He also mentioned that they were in need of cleaning. The verdict... I will not be returning to the Murphy's Mule Barn. P.S We took the leftovers home for our dog & she sniffed it and walked away, not a good sign when she prefers Kibbles and Bits to people food ...

This is our "Must stop" for breakfast when going to or through ABQ. Its got a comfy-cozy atmosphere, lots of tables and the wait staff has always been friendly to us. When pulling into the lot, it's not fancy, but what appearance would you expect from a mule barn?? The servings are large, and the food really good. The menu selection is not huge but everything we have ordered has been satisfying. We will keep coming back!

We loved this place so much, that we had to come twice! My wife and I worked on a crew for the balloon fiesta, and the thing to do after you're done ballooning in Albuquerque is to go out to breakfast. We went to 4 different spots for breakfast during the week, and this was our favorite. The decor is funky and the vibe is very homey, so everyone is very nice and you feel like family. Coffee is served from random mugs, which is a fun touch. And the portions are HUGE. The chicken fried steak is literally the biggest thing you've ever seen. My wife and I split it because we had heard that it would be big, and we were stuffed and still took half of it home. The second time we can we both had a breakfast burrito, which was still huge as we both took back half of a burrito for lunch. If you're looking for the best breakfast in ABQ, it's time to stop looking and head to the Mule Barn.

Would not feed this to a starved canine. Beyond awful. An assault on my taste buds.

Been going there for a long time. It's Arkansas country style food with some top notch New Mexican thrown in for good measure. Great wait staff, friendly management, visually interesting from the decor to the customers. It is in character for a country style place...could be a truck stop from 1959. One of the few places in New Mexico with catfish on the menu as a regular item. Good fresh soup. Amazing country fried steak! Don't dress up for this and you'll be right at home. Parking for anything that can be legally driven on the highway. Good prices too. Seat yourself and the waitstaff will provide a menu. Turn that coffee cup right side up and say no more. In addition, the men's room was clean and neat. You'll either love it or hate it but my bet is that you'll love it.

The food is OK, but a neighborhood restaurant. However, my 13 year old LOVED the hot turkey sandwich because the gravy was "awesome." We'd come back. Great service!

One of the best bacon green chile cheeseburgers in the city! Quite a jaunt for us to get here since we live in the heights, but well worth it! You cannot go wrong with this.....I know you can get burgers virtually anywhere, but when in the area.......try it! You will be back!! Nice old school country diner atmosphere.....couple of bucks in the jukebox with some old country and an ice cold glass of iced tea.......You will not be sorry.

What a great place! It is as genuine as a place can be. A family owned jewel. My date and I went to the mule barn on Labor Day, and the place was empty (a few scattered patrons). We ate great food, and sat and talked for (what seemed like) hours. They made us feel at home. Typically, I prefer smaller portions. I just had bacon and eggs, but everything was just like planned. When we were leaving, the waitress was serving a "FULL" chicken fried steak. MYGOD -- I doubt I could eat a quarter of it. Great food -- great atmosphere, great prices, and great help. I would have given it a 5 stars, but everything was too big for me to eat.

We live behind the Mule Barn and were frequent customers. Then food portions started getting smaller and the prices going up. The last time I was there, I stopped for dessert. There was only as small section open to seat customers. The desserts were posted in a the section that was closed. I was not attempting to sit down I was just reading the menu. The cashier came up and rudely told me the section was closed. I replied I was reading the dessert menus to place a to go order. I order three crappy tasting desserts for $15.00. I should have just left. Not even a thank for coming. This place is dying a slow death. Definitely not the great food and service from a few years ago.

We had a reasonably good experience there on Saturday, but returned today and will NEVER go again! We waited 10 minutes just to get water, then had to track down a waitress to take our order, after she had taken it from another table that came in after us. Then we saw friends arrive as part of a big group that was seated in a separate room. All of those people who arrived after us, including the large group, got their food before us. Finally, after waiting more than an hour, our food came out cold, and one order was totally wrong. How do you confuse an order for a burrito with an omelette? There was no apology or explanation other than she had too many things to keep track of. Maybe she should be fired - that would solve her problem. We left the three cold dishes on the table and went to another restaurant. We were hungry but we were trying to be patient and reasonable. Too bad the horrible service will keep us from going back. And we'll tell the other 60 people in our RV group (here for Balloon Fiesta), and all the pilots we crew for to avoid this place. Maybe they'll wake up when their business starts declining.

Had my first and only visit there today. My breakfast was served on a dirty plate. So gross! The dishes all seemed go be very old and cracked and chipped and mine had the extra bonus of being DIRTY! There is a fine line between homey and dirty and they have crossed it. Will not be going back...ever

Guess I like the family owned places. Murphy's Mule Barn, I'm told by the friend that introduced me several years ago used to be a truck stop and is now a family diner. It definitely has the family feel about it. None of the coffee cups match and the place is about as informal as it gets. Come in, find an empty table (sometimes a difficult task) and a waitress will be with you in a very short time, with a friendly smile, menu's and frequently a "What can I getcha hon'?" While Murphy's is on the other side of town for us, we still make the trek there when we want a GREAT breakfast. When you come here bring an appetite, you'll need it. If Murphy's has a signature dish it would be the Murphy's Omelet. It's HUGE! It's a fantastic meal in itself, and yes It comes with the NM choice of Red or Green. I prefer green myself. For those with health concerns, they will, on request make the Omelet with Egg Beaters. Try the pancakes they are so big, the butter is put on a separate container on the side so it won't melt and drip all over the place. The pancakes cover the entire plate and it's a big plate.

I have been hunting around Albuquerque for a real chicken-fried steak for a couple of years. So far, this is the only place that has one. And it's a doozy. It comes out on a 12-inch platter and it's still hanging over the sides. They pound it out really thin, so it's not quite as scary as it sounds at first. Took me three tries to conquer one of the things though, and I'm no small guy. If you don't want a hunk of down-home, greasy, breaded, griddle-fried beef, then this may not be the item for you. I have no idea what the rest of the menu is like, though the burgers look good when they come out. I had a piece of lemon meringue pie after dinner one trip. It was tasty and didn't taste like it was made from Jell-O. On my last trip, the waiter got a little defensive when I tried to point the eggs the eggs were a little under cooked for having requested "well" scrambled. The kitchen manager came out, and we had a nice chat. She knew exactly what I meant with regard to the eggs. They wound up comping my coffee, which is acceptable, since the eggs were edible, if just barely. So my advice to the wait staff, there is a difference between a complaint and feedback. Learn it. Use it. There is lots of parking for the size of the restaurant. Inside it's a bit...rustic. Usually there's canned/radio music, but the sound system is rather decrepit and jerry-rigged. Very casual. Staff is friendly. This is not fine dining. Don't come here expecting anything fancy. Do expect good, cheap food. Consider bringing a fly-swatter if you come in summer. Flies are always a problem in the summer months in New Mexico, but I was barely able to eat my food for the flies this last time. I would have given an extra star if it weren't for the flies because the CFS is soooo damn good.

I come here a lot with with my mom. Every time she talks about how she came here when it was a truck stop. Of course everyone knows about the chicken fried steak that feeds me for 4 meals. I've had other items on the menu and I have no complaints. I love the chocolate chip cookies that they have at the cashier spot. Yum.
