Came for dinner and walked away very happy. Food was excellent, nacho appetizer was pretty great. Kids shared a pizza that was very good, though a bit heavy on the cheese. Burgers and Salads the rest of us had got thumbs ups. Service was everything you could want. Prompt and friendly. Didn't charge for refills on drinks or the extra chips we asked when the nachos chips ran out. Micro brew, awesome. Getting a t-shirt. Will be back soon.

Review for the bar and beer only. The bar was clouded by an awful odor coming from the filthy rags the bartenders continued to use. Speaking of filthy, the tap lines are not clean, nor were the glasses. The beers continued on the path of underwhelming and lacking. The IPA and pale ale tasted nearly identical, but one had more of a green pea taste than the other. Disgusting. I'm glad they don't bottle or can their beers. This leaves more room on store shelves for better options.

Been here 3 times to visit my main squeeze Abby who works behind the bar. I promise, every time you visit you will have the BEST time, whether it's for some snacks or some serious drinks. Looking for bar food? Go for the pretzels. I CANNOT stress enough how incredible their beer cheese dip is. You'll want to take a bath in that stuff. Not feeling pretzels? Go for the nachos! Which are also perfect to share. They also have pretty much everything else you could possible want so don't be scared you won't be able to find something to eat. Drinks??? MOJITO! Definitely one of the best mojitos I've had. Otherwise they have a FINEE beer selection that'll keep you busy all night. Go have fun!!

I love this place for so many reasons but the food is not up to par with its bar. Basic fare is great but the specials are not ever really too special. The cocktails are great and you can't go wrong with a good beer on the patio on a nice afternoon!

Seeing as though I'm living in the Morris/Sussex area this summer now that school is out, I figured I might as well try to find some local bars to go to. Some friends of mine and I decided to go to Sparta to check out Krogh's. Everyone I know has been here before but I never have (mainly because I've been living in Montclair for the last 2 years. God I miss it there). Anyways, Krogh's is in the quaint Lake Mohawk area of Sparta. Nestled alongside a lake with a whole "alpine" atmosphere going on in the area, it has a nice rustic appeal to it. Kinda like an affordable Aspen. So anyways, we get there and I like it. It's set up as a rustic tavern. Wooden everything. The thing that gets me is their beer selection. A lot of craft beers going on. I have this Stucker Beer (stuecker? sticker? I don't know, my German is crap) that the bartender, Matt, suggested. I try it and I LOVE it. It's like 9.7% alc. with a very sweet taste to it. As the night goes on, I have my first Pickleback (Jameson shot with a pickle juice chaser) which was surprisingly refreshing and we share some nachos. The nachos. Guys. It's SO good. The chips were smothered with cheese, meat, beans and salsa. It was savory and sweet and good to eat. The guacamole that came with it was creamy and perfect. Shoutout to Matt for being an awesome bartender and suggesting the beer for us. I definitely see myself going here over the summer again.

I love the little downtown area that is less than 2 blocks long. I especially love being able to sit outside of Kroghs and look out onto lake Mohawk. Last night I ordered their burger with cheese and fries. I ordered it medium and when it came out I forgot that their burgers party is larger than I like usually. However, I tooled at it and it was so juice and when I tasted I forgot about its size. I love when my bun is toasted but there bun when toasted is a little hard and it make it difficult to hold the burger bite after bite. Our server was excellent, I should of gotten her name.

Awesome location, truly amazing bar food, friendly staff, and occasionally there are some good bands that play here as well.

Don't be fooled by the 3 stars--I really enjoyed my burger and the service was fantastic. That's it. The owner responded to my last review and suggested I was there on an 'off day' in regards to their beer. Well, I went back, and can now 100% confirm that it wasn't an off day--the beer is downright bad. Krogh's has a lot of nerve charging $6 for a pint of beer. They have a lot of nerve calling some of their beers a certain style--IPA, Pale Ale, etc. Let's start with the weird: If you want a taste, they serve it to you in a tiny plastic cup. I'm pretty sure it's the same one they use for salad dressing. I have NEVER been to any beer, brewpub, or brewery that does that. It's classless and absolutely silly. Just use small glasses. Now, the beer: I made a point of tasting everything. The Krogh's Gold was horrendous. Far too much diacetyl and it was weird and buttery. I'd rather have PBR. The bartender couldn't tell me the IBU count on the IPA, but I suspect it was extraordinarily low. The beer wasn't well-hopped and tasted way, way too sweet. There was no balance. The red ale was like drinking liquid caramel, and again, was missing a red's trademark maltiness. Another strike. I thought the Oktoberfest was passable...barely. The oatmeal stout had no body and was really watery. The Brogden Meadow (sp?) again, wasn't well-hopped. Please don't compare it to Sierra Nevada--it does a great disservice to them to be grouped with Krogh's. So, look--I get this is a long, bitchy review, but I don't like it when places masquerade as 'quality' beer places when all they're producing is crap. Krogh's beer is simply not good. At all. There's no other way to say it. And then, when you have the gall to charge $6 for it? Outrageous. I reiterate, again: if you want good beer, go to the Mohawk House. If you want beer that's worse than what I could make in my basement (true story), go here. To Krogh's: Dear god, fire whoever is brewing your beer and get someone who knows what they're doing. Change is good, and in your case, you're in desperate need of it. Important final note: Our waitress was fantastic. I'd consider going back just for her service...but not having a beer, that's for sure.

Only in a place as stagnant and eerily charming as Sparta, NJ, would you ever find a restaurant/ bar with the same appeal. While the interior decor might give you the illusion that you grew 8 inches or somehow stumbled into a hobbits' pub in the shire, do not be deterred. Go ahead and order some delicious nachos or a juicy burger alongside a home-brewed seasonal pint and you might not even notice that you're surrounded by groups of irrelevant 27 year old SHS alumni. However, quick tip, skip the nights with a local band made up of patchy-bearded stoners, playing an out of tune rendition of Wonderwall to save your ears from bleeding. All jokes aside, this place is cozy, unique, and serve delicious food and brewskis. But what do I know? I'm only a doctor....

I read the negative reviews, and I really wanted to like this place. It pretty much lined up with some of the less than stellar reviews found here though. I started with the 7 beer sampler. I noticed people complaining about the Gold, but I believe it is supposed to be a lager. Its going to be like, well, lagers. The craft beer movement tends to focus on ales. That is where they fell kind of short. I am a fan of red ales and caramel malts, but never have they tasted so much like caramel. The wheat and pale ale were not particularly good. I did enjoy the Wee Heavy and the ESB was okay. I am leaving a beer out, but it obviously wasn't blowing me away. The beer is also priced higher than commercial offerings at other bars, and more than any brewpub I have been to. It is also worth mentioning that I had two beers in my sampler left when someone took them away. They got them replaced for me, but that was just kind of odd. The food is okay, but not great. You can sum it up with the 2 star rating of "Meh." I don't get the interest in the rarebit sauce, but that might just be a person taste thing. As far as nachos go, they don't stand out as good, but people seem to like them in other reviews. I would put the food on par with Harvest Moon's brew pub in terms of quality, which isn't saying a lot. However, Harvest Moon does a better job in the beer department. The staff was nice despite my beer being taken away. The atmosphere is also great despite the dining area being cramped. I loved the set up, and I would love to just sit bar and soak it in while I drink an evening away if I was into the beer. It was also pretty crowded for an off hour on a Sunday. I feel like this place might be some sort of neighborhood staple, but not someplace I would travel to visit again.

If, like us, you love finding a pleasingly funky family-owned local place with decent food and some home brews on the menu, Krogh's is a special discovery. It's a throwback to a bygone era, and as oringal as you can get. We ordered the potato skins as a starter and were surprised. They were awesome. My roast beef sandwich with cheddar cheese and carmelized onions was great, and I rarely (as in never) order a roast beef sandwich, so I felt I was going out on a limb. It was a wise decision. My husband got a blue burger and loved it. It was cooked perfectly to his order (medium) and there was plenty of blue cheese. His onion rings were delicious but a bit on the greasy side. They would have been absolute perfection had they been less greasy. My cole slaw with creamy dressing was good. I ordered a "Golden" beer from their in-house brewery. It was light and very smooth, with medium body. I thought it was quite refreshing and tastey, and ordered a second pint! Looking at other Yelp reviews of Krogh's, it appears their brewed beer is a let down for real beer lovers who are looking for an awesome micro brew. My take is that Krogh's is a place you go for the authentic atmosphere and decor, decent food, excellent/exceptional service, and a reasonable local brew, but don't expect the beer to be to-die-for fantastic. That said, I do love their golden beer. All in all, we were quite pleased with Krogh's and enjoyed the unique, lake cabin-like atmosphere. We've added Krogh's to our list of great casual eateries to frequent.

Great casual place! The food is definately good. Service is great. And the place is so cool, and you get the beautiful view of the Mohawk Lake as soon as you step out. Great location. Dont forget to check out the beers!

Outstanding service, staff and great eats! This place knows how to win you over and keep you coming back through the door. On our first visit we were blown away by the attention we received from the staff. That attention has been the same since we've gone back. Honestly, this restaurant gets it right!

  • Gambrinus K.

Very nice staff, unique venue with a lot of character, the beer is overpriced homebrew and the food is mediocre and overly priced. The dining acommodations and seating are too close and loud.

We have been back for our third visit Everyone is friendly the food has been spot on. We had the Nachos and another burger. Both we a hit. My wife tried a martini and said it was very good. I have grown partial to the pale Ale and like it very much. We are both interested in trying the cask conditioned ale, but they were out of it the last two times we were there, must be a popular item. Look forward to going back again soon for the brewmasters week.

I wasn't blown away by any of the offerings here. Standard bar fare accompanied by a beer sampler. The cajun chicken had decent flavor but it was more because of the oozing melted American Cheese. The beer here was okay in my opinion but my fiance loved it much more than I did. The brewery is located right by a beautiful lake in Sparta NJ in an almost old school German esque village. Kind of looks like something out of Disneyland from the 60's. Crowd is your average well to do white bread North Jersey suburbs crowd, nothing trendy going on here. We were looking for a local brewery in NJ to explore and chose this one. Worth the trip if you're looking for something to do on a day off; the area is very pretty and the bar is very homey. FYI, parking is limited so prepare to walk.

I love Kroghs! As a South Jersey native, discovering places in North Jersey to look forward to is exciting for me. My boyfriend is from Sussex Co. so a trip to Krough's is necessary for every visit, basically. I have tried multiple menu items and I absolutely loved the veggie pizza they offer. On top of super cheesey dough are lightly grilled veggies that were soft with a little crunch, they were perfectly done. As far as drinks go, they offer beers made in-house, which I cannot wait to try. It's the martinis however, that make my mouth water. Now, I don't normally drink hard liquor, I'm a full-on wine nerd who loves beer, but Krough's basil and mint cucumber martini is TO DIE FOR. It is perfect. I kid you not, it was one of the best mixed drinks I've ever had. They were also kind enough to make it for me out of season. I can't wait to go back.

My boyfirend and I love Kroughs! The bartenders are friendly. The food is delicious. They have much more to offer than just "bar food". I have been here many times and every time I order I always like what I have gotten. The potato skins are amazingggg! My boyfriend likes the wings.I like that they brew their own beers. My favorite is the Three Sisters. Overall a great place to eat or drink.

For a Sparta family owned business this place isn't as great as what others may say about it. Food is nothing crazy or fancy, and it's definitely too over crowded and small.

  • Guillermo M.

Set on the main street of Sparta's village center, Krogh's has outdoor seating with a view across the street of Lake Mohawk and the boardwalk. This place has the feel of a lodge with a dark interior and warm feel. Unfortunately the food and beer don't come up to the same level. I had an open roast beef sandwich that was smothered in gravy that tasted like it came out of a can. The salad and french fries were the best part of the meal. As for the beers, of the four we tasted, only one was "OK" - and that was a stout. The best part of the experience was attentive staff. Perhaps the kitchen crew and brew-masters could learn from their enthusiasm.

Our first visit and it won't be our last. A great evening from top to bottom. Loved the Oatmeal Stout Beer. Looking forward to trying some of their others. My wife loved the 2 different martinis she tried (Melon & Rainbow Sherbert). Food? Incredible. I had the Welsh Rarebit sandwich special and OMG! The rarebit sauce was so sexy I wanted it to give me a lapdance. Onion rings fried to crunch perfection. My wife had the roasted chicken with cheesey potatoes. Chicken was spectacular and the cheesey potatoes were so good, if I was on death row, they'd be in my last meal. Special kudos to our server, Cindy. Everything you'd want and more. In fact, everyone we interacted with was polite and friendly. Located in the most picturesque setting on Lake Mohawk, Krogh's is doing the gastropub thing right. But, when you have a place that brings in a band as good as The Deems, I'd give them 6 STARS! If you see The Deems are going to be back there, do not miss them! So, in a nutshell: Krogh's knocked it out of the park.

Actually nachos and beer.. GOOD! Service and host were at best mediocre. 4 adults, 1 baby in a car seat. Just wanted to grab a beer and basically got asked to move seats. Ok fine.. But the icing on the cake cake was when we were using a chair to put the baby back in the car seat and they needed the seat. They had plenty of other seats and didn't need to make a scene. The waitresses were just rude. Hate places that are rude to families....and by the way.. The baby is not mine.

One of my favorite pubs. They have great burgers and they have great corned beef sandwiches. Service was attentive. Nachos were great. They make their own Root Beer. I will return. DO NOT come here when there's a festival or event at Lake Mohawk. I came here during the German Festival one year and I had to wait 1.5 hours for a table and it was loud to the point where you you can't hear people at YOUR OWN table.

We were out with a friend the other night boating on Lake Mohawk (no, I'm not bragging I'm just filling in the blanks) and after a trip around the lake with a couple of adult beverages we docked for dinner. Fortunately, we were early for our reservation so our host suggested we stop in at Krogh's for a beer or two. A good friend of mine who grew up in the area said this place had great beer and, for him at least, it was always a place to find old friends he grew up with as a kid. So, first off, this place seems like a cool hangout. There's a great (little) dining area and we were told that the burgers and some of the other items are great (unfortunately we didn't eat here). The area around the bar, while tight, seemed cozy enough and was set up in such a way that the bartenders are always right on top of you. The bartenders were great the night we were here and they gave us tasters of all their local brews-the Red Ale was nice, as was the Stout, but I went with the Nut Brown Ale. The ladies decided on the seasonal unfiltered Belgian which I have to admit was quite delicious. I ordered the nut brown ale and was very pleased-tasted like there were hints of coffee and chocolate and there was also a bit if a smokey flavor. By the time we had another round it was time to go and we were...ummmmmm...let's say it was a good thing we weren't driving anytime soon. Though we were looking forward to eating around the corner at the Lake Mohawk Country Club (ok, maybe that was bragging-but it isn't like we're members so I gotta brag a little) we were a bummed we had to leave. By this time a burger and another beer would have been a great lead-in to the beer pong tournament they were hosting that night. I really want to come back up here to eat...you know me and a good burger-you can't keep us apart forever.

3.5 stars would be the most accurate rating for our experience here but we rounded up instead of down because the beer and food were very good. Came here after a bike ride on the Paulinskill Rail Trail. Love the building and the area. We sat inside though they do have a small outside seating area on the sidewalk. We ordered the lunch special in the dining area... buy one ($9.95) get one half price. We should have sat at the bar because happy hour is only available there and it's worth it if you're going to have some of their brews. Happy hour is 4-6:30 and beers are $3. We paid almost $7 a beer at our table, so that was annoying. We tried the special Belgian-style white ale and it was VERY good. So- the lunch special... it doesn't come with much for $9.95 and the portions are small. However, the food was tasty. I ordered a mozzarella, prosciutto and roasted pepper wrap. It came with cole slaw and since I don't eat cole slaw I asked for it to come without, but our server said I should have the slaw because it all comes together. Whatever that means. M ordered catfish lunch special and it came with a side salad, one fillet of catfish, and a small portion of rice. He really enjoy it but was still hungry afterwards. If you come for lunch and it's during happy hour and you plan on having their beer, I think sitting at the bar makes the most sense. Plus the Thursday we were here there were half priced apps at the bar, which was probably a better deal than the buy one lunch get one half off deal. If we were in the area again I think we'd come back and take advantage of happy hour and try more of their brews.

When I go out to dinner I would like to be served nicely "at least", not to eat out of plastic plates or silverware. It's restaurant on the sign ,not diner! The food is BAD, if you know food you'll know its alllll frozen. Never ever coming back.

One of the better brewpub's in NJ and maybe one of the coolest looking bars I've ever been to. Right on lake Mohawk, Krogh's is like an old german cavern inside. Although I'm not a local, it's definitely a "Cheers" kind of bar in that a large portion of the patrons seem to know each other and the staff. Anyways, on to the important stuff. They have some really great beers. They have about 6 that are always on tap, and a seasonal that they rotate in and out. We happened upon the ESB seasonal, and it was one of the best beer of theirs I've ever had. The Oatmeal Stout, which is always on tap, ranks up there as well. I've only eaten there twice but the rarebit sauce is tasty and the nachos are awesome.

  • B X.

Great place for a locally brewed beer! The food is typical, stick with pub type dishes... sandwiches and burgers. The fish and entrees tend to be hit or miss and some what over priced. I dig the inside and the Alpine Red beer I can drink by the gallon. Overall an all around solid restaurant/bar.

    (4)
  • Mel B.

Our favorite local pub. Food is nothing to write home about and service is hit or miss, but this isn't a fancy place and you get fair value for your buck. Love that they make their own brews. If you're in Sparta, this is a great place to go. Right across from Lake Mohawk, so walks on the boardwalk after dinner are almost mandatory!

  • Matthew Z.

I have spent a lot of time here and have found all the beers to my liking. Have eaten here a bunch of times and thought the food was really good also. The down side with this place is the parking is iffy to say the least. Try to go off peak times or be prepared to crawl the center of lake Mohawk waiting for a spot.

  • Paul C.

Another time where I wish I could give a place three and a half stars. Their stout is really fantastic; its got legs and a ton of complexity. But all of their other usual beers are just meh. Their seasonals can be hit or miss--their bock was very tasty but their Oktoberfest is...just ok. Very good broad menu and yes, the nachos are tasty. Very solid veggie burger. Parking definitely sucks, so just keep that in mind. You'll probably need to park at the lot a few blocks away. It's also kind of tricky to get in and out of downtown so definitely make sure you're sober enough to drive when you leave.

I think a lot of people go with the wind as they write their reviews. Kroghs is a Sparta staple. I know this because I live there. The food is always exact, the staff is usually excellent, and the beers are impressive. This restaurant is top five in the county. Probably the best thing is the consistency of the food. I go here three or four times a month, and always love it.

  • Amber M.

The place has a great view and the staff was friendly but that's about it. I had a open beef sandwich and it was smothered in less than appetizing gravy. Hoping the fries would help fill me up but sadly I've had better at fast food places. My boyfriend's food wasn't all that much better. At least their home made root beer was good.

I have been coming here for years. Best burger and potato skins I've ever had. We love taking friends and family from out of town to here to try the beer sampler. I love the outdoor area when the weather's nice. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is a little cramped inside and I would like if they added some more interesting food to the menu.

Very cool Tavern atmosphere. Sometimes the bar crowd looks a little rough but it's never out of hand. The two waitresses I had, honest had no clue how to sell their house beers. I can't blame one of them because she honestly looked like she's 18 and never had a beer in her life, the other however kept comparing beers to coors lite, bud lite, and other cheapo type beers. I guess that's a training issue but it killed the experience a little bit. Parking was also a little difficult, but manageable if you time your arrival right or don't mind walking a little bit. The food is delicious, great burgers, seafood and steaks. Pasta sauces are exactly as described in the menu. One downfall and I blame this slightly on the waitress again, there weren't any clues as to what food went well with what house beer, I'm sure with a little training or possibly a hint on the house beer menu would improve this. I can see it being unpleasant for someone that might be less well versed in beer. The live music that frequents the bar is actually pretty good the few times I've stopped in, and their Frequent Customer Card system is pretty cool. Overall my experience was pleasant and I'll be returning again in the future.

Great food, fabulous beer, and the folks who work here are just lovely. Love this place for lunch and dinner. Do yourself a favor and stop in! (The beer sampler is a good way to become acquainted with the place:)

I mostly just love the location and idea of this place.. and also the cookie ice cream sandwiches. The beer is good (Not the best ever but not the worst) but I appreciate their concept and the fact that they are one of our local brew pubs we must support and I love their location so I am a huge fan.

First the beer - as a beer connoisseur, the 3 beers I had all were marginal to bad. The Red was weak and flavorless, the seasonal Belgian was one of the worst belgians i'd ever had, and the Wheat beer was just ok. I've had much much better brewpub beers at Trap Rock, Harvest Moon, JJ Bitings, and a bunch of other places. Next the food - the french onion soup was okay, my roast beef openface sandwich was marginal at best, and the bar's famous Rarebit cheese sauce was made with powdered cheese (or at least tasted like it). I love pub fare and often get it, so I'd rank this in my bottom 25%. The apple dessert was okay, tasted a bit fake. The place itself is very nice with a beautiful atmosphere, and Sparta itself is very cute, but for me to drive 35 minutes from Morristown I'd need much much better food and/or beer; even the Restaurant.com coupon didn't make it worth it.

This is one of those look back fondly reviews. I haven't been to Krogh's in many months but my memory of it is very good. They brew their own beer -- I think it's fun to try a locally brewed beer. And while I stopped in for a burger, more interesting and tasty menu items led to my having something other than a burger and glad for the choice. Krogh's is not near me but I'm looking forward to going back again.

I have not had such a great experience at any other restaurant as my family and i have had at Krogh's. Everyone we met was engaging, attentive and VERY good at their job. We have been a dozen times since we moved to this area (6 months) and we have tried numerous places in this area and all over the Tri-State area in the past decade. Down Home good cooking mixed with superb service and staff. Once you realize that they brew world class Beer on premises and age it underground in old mines in the area, you will not be able to resist coming back for more, especially if you live in the area. The fare is excellent and goes way beyond normal gastro pub chow. Lots of fun activities and great specials! Very Family Friendly! TEN stars, well done Krogh's! Come here any night, you will not be disappointed.

Went on a Saturday night, and was told it was a 25 minute wait. We sat at the bar instead, and the service was fantastic! Everyone was so attentive. The burgers were great, and the seasonal beer was excellent. Watched a wedding from the window - great view. Good music. Would love to sit outside next time!

Recently moved to the area and went to Krogh's for lunch. Because it looked like a trendy place I was a little intimidated by what the atmosphere and the prices might be like. I was totally wrong...Krogh's was warm and inviting. Monday through Friday the lunches are buy one get one 1/2 off (I think). I ordered a turkey sandwich on a multigrain roll with brie and cranberry chutney...amazing! My friend ordered cod encrusted in some sort of pecan/macadamia nut blend and that was delicious as well. The portions were just right (and for a lunch portion it seemed to be very generous) and both meals came with a little side...mine with coleslaw and the fish with a salad and fries. Ordering was tough because everything on the menu looked delicious and different without being overly outside of the norm. The hostess and server welcomed me to the neighborhood and I'm beginning to feel right at home! I had such a great dining experience that I'm heading back to try one of their beers ASAP. Glad to have such a great restaurant/pub so close to home.

Great atmosphere and good food. My husband is a fan of the brews too but since I've been pregnant each time we've been there I can't year comment on those. We like the nachos, fajitas, burgers, and salads. Friendly staff as well. We went in the day we signed the contract on our new home and when the waitress heard we were new to Sparta she gave us a warm welcome and a bottle of champagne. Definitely recommend Kroghs!

I'm not entirely sure why this place has such great reviews, because the standards in this area tend to be higher. Their beer is mediocre at best. If you like bud light, you'll probably enjoy it, but if you're any kind of a craft beer fan then it will likely be some of the worst you've ever had. The atmosphere is kind of crappy and they are super stingy with buy backs, but it's kind of a standard hang out and definitely in a beautiful location. Their only redeeming qualities are that they have one PHENOMENAL waitress who could run the place herself, and the nachos and their house creamy garlic dressing are to die for. I still go from time to time because it's walking distance, but I wouldn't recommend the place to a friend.

Food is standard fare, but service is extraordinary! Location is great. Call ahead for reservations, can be long waits without. Family-friendly. Good with kids.

Stopped by here with a friend before heading to Jefferson for a weekend of camping. We ordered a small Krogh's Famous Nachos El Grande as a starter and had Oktoberfest pints. Even though we ordered the small, it was LOTS of food - awesome! Additionally, my friend told the waiter we like our stuff hot and that the cook should try to impress us. Well, think he had a bottle of some hot sauce from home or something that was added to the dish as it definitely had a kick (in a good way!). The full rack of ribs was unavailable, bummer, as I wanted to really try this. Instead we ordered the short ribs with potatoes and everything. Ate half of the dish and saved the rest for lunch the next day. The meat was seriously better tasting than half of the upscale steakhouses I have tried in NYC. It even tasted great the next day being microwaved (yes, sacrilege I know). Really excellent dining experience. Finally, the owner of Krogh's was one of maybe 5 to ever respond to one of my yelp reviews. This means quite a bit to the dedication to quality of an establishment. I provided additional honest feedback and the owner made up for my last negative bar experience by sending me a gift card. I am impressed.

The have a great beer selection. Although I havent had any entrees, their wings are awesome and the Potato skins may be the best I ever had. Dont forget to take home a growler!

Wish this place was closer to me, it would be a regular hang out! Knew the name already from the various beer events around the state. Saw it on that restaurant coupon certificate website and went for it. Visited with a good buddy of mine on my birthday in March. Busy with plenty of buzz inside. Nice large bar area with a restaurant seating area on the opposite side. Wood everywhere. I enjoyed the feel. Several beer choices I asked the bartender what the standard was for the house half & half and it depends on the bartender. I tried it 2 different ways and they were both fine. None of the beers wowed me but they are perfect for a local haunt. Menu is diverse, made me wonder what their specialty is - can't do everything well, right? Ordered wings as an appetizer. They were OK. My main was the sirloin. Again, OK. When it comes to steak I want to taste the meat. Simple flavor when it's not BBQ'd. This one was grilled to medium doneness like I had asked but the flavor was 80% charcoal grill. I wanted it to taste "cleaner". I can't remember what my buddy got - think it was rack of lamb. He liked it. Our waitress was great - fun and professional. I ordered chocolate cake to treat myself on my birthday and when she heard it was on the house. What a nice surprise. Overall, Krogh's is a great local place with solid food and beer. Staff is just as solid, fun and professional. The owners care because I heard from them after using the web coupon - which the place accepted without issue. I will be back again this summer to enjoy the lake and a nice slow afternoon.

I went there with a group of people to try the beer they brew there. So we started with the sampler that gave us each of their 7 beers. There was nothing special about any of the beer. They were all just "okay". The nachos supreme were also okay. Nothing special. Cool decor though.

I am a huge fan of Kroghs! My boyfriend I love coming here for the beer and the food. The staff is always friendly and the food is always great. The beer isn't phenomenal but it is pretty good. Their rarebit sauce is great!! Great place to come for lunch or dinner. When you go, try the beer sampler to see what you like. They do have a few different types and they are all pretty good. I recommend the burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches. Ask for a side of the rarebit sauce....and thank me later.

This review is based on Brews only. The pint scale is 0-5 of how many pints I could drink in one evening. 3 sisters golden wheat- bright and crisp with slight hoppy bitterness 3 pints. With a dash of raspberry syrup it goes up to 4 pints. The syrup added a nice tartness. Kroghs gold- standard lager 3 pints but nothing special. Brogden meadow pale ale- typical ipa 1 pint Alpine glow red ale- warm nutty flavor 4 pints Log cabin nut brown- slightly bitter porter 2 pints Old krogh oatmeal stout- smooth, creamy toasted oatmeal flavor. 4 pints Pumpkin spice- not your typical pumpkin beer. Aroma of nutmeg and cinnamon but not overly present on the pallet. 2 pints.

Great lunch today , outside in a beautiful setting. Food was excellent and service couldn't have been better. They have great lunch specials and a large selection to choose from. I was visiting my niece who just moved to the area....she was given a bottle of champagne as a welcome gift. . . . Can't wait to go back. Thanks Kroghs!

Kroghs is such a great brewpub! The beer is wonderful, best wings and nachos around. You have to try the taco salad. And the dinners are great! Go for the house dressing with your salad. Can't say enough about this place.. if you are into good beer and food go to kroghs asap!

Krogh's should get 4 stars based on Nachos and Beer alone. Actually it's exactly what I'm basing my score on. It's tough for me to review this place because I practically grew up here. It was our place to hangout, play in the open mic night, and listen to townies play their music. As far as a hangout, it's the best. The log cabin setting across the street from the Lake Mohawk boardwalk is second to none in this town. The food is good. not amazing, not anything new, just good. Sometimes even very good. There was a time there when I think they overreached and tried to be something they weren't, but I am pretty sure that time has passed. They now do what they do best, give fresh, hearty meals, at a reasonable price. Now the beer. Krogh's is one of the best craft breweries in the state. They just churn out fantastic seasonal beer and then they have their 5 or 6 staple beers. If you go there, have beer. Please. You can't go wrong here.

Great atmosphere! Love their craft beer. If you want a great bar in Sparta, Kroghs is the way to go!! Food, not so much but the atmosphere and beer make up for it!

What an amazing brewpub! Before stepping foot into Krogh's I felt as if I was in a different country from the Tudor style homes and shops lining the street next to Mohawk Lake. Once inside, you really get a sense that this place has been here forever! And it has. This place has been around since 1927 before the lake was even there. I'm giving Krogh's 5 stars for a few reasons. First of all they offer such a unique atmosphere and comfortable feeling for hanging out and enjoying one of their handcrafted beers. There was a great crowd on the Friday night that I had gone. All of the tables and chairs were made of wood and were fire-stamped with the Krogh's logo, which I thought was very cool. The menu was pretty standard, nothing really jumps out at you as something different to try. Also, most of the entrees seemed to be a little overpriced for what they were. The one thing that sort of jumped out that was different, and is also what I ordered, was the Krogh's Rarebit Special. This was an open-faced sandwich with turkey, tomato, bacon, and Welsh Rarebit sauce (which is cheddar sauce made with beer). The sandwich was full of flavor and definitely hit the spot. What caught my attention due to it's size and smell from across the room was the nacho platter. Holy moly! This plate was stacked high and looked like a meal in itself. I'll be ordering that next time. The main reason why my friends and I had taken the trip to Krogh's was for the beer. Anyplace can brew a decent lager so I decided to try the Alpine Glow Red Ale, the Log Cabin Nut Brown, and finally the Old Krogh Oatmeal Stout. The red was very smooth and was full of flavor, one of the better red ale's I have had from NJ brewpubs/breweries. The Nut brown was also full of flavor, a great beer but not distinctive from other nut browns I've had. The Oatmeal Stout was excellent. Probably my favorite beer of the night. This beer has a slight texture to it that coats your mouth and gives a silky smooth and rich flavor. Perfect beer to end the night. Too bad I didn't live in the area because this place looks like one of the best hangouts around. I would make a trip back when the weather is a little warmer and I can walk around the area, check out a few of the other shops and restaurants, and enjoy the lake. I would recommend Krogh's to anyone who loves trying new places and who loves craft beer. Hope the review was helpful, now go and enjoy a craft beer! RM

Good local brewpub. I'm probably inflating the rating a little because I'm fond of brewpubs in general, and they're in short supply around here. That said, you can't go wrong with the taco salad, the enchiladas, or the nachos. Their beer is reliably good, if not the kind of excellent microbrew you'd find more readily in other regions of the country; if you find their brews are not to your taste, the full bar will serve you any other kind of drink you might have in mind . The location is great. It gets crowded on Friday and Saturday evenings. The crowding is worsened by their insistence on using Krogh's as a music venue, a purpose for which the building is spectacularly ill-suited. Parking can also be tough.

I really enjoy going to Kroughs and always have, ever since we moved to the area. The atmosphere & building is just gorgeous..the building reminds me of a lake front home on Lake Mohawk. Kroughs is absolutely a Sparta staple. This past visit to the establishment, some girlfriends and I got a BIG plate of Nachos which were GREAT! I picked off some peppers just because I don't like them but oh these were so tasty and also very filling!!!! I didn't get it this time, but I highly recommend the French Onion Soup, my opinion is that Kroughs makes the best I've ever had. After we had our Nachos (and some of us had small salads too) we went to the bar area. It has been at least a few years since I sat at this bar and it seemed a lot different, some good-such as the decor, however it was very cramped and the crowd wasn't exactly my style(or age range!!!) with that being said I will always go to the Kroughs dining room but I plan on going to the bar on a night/day when it's quieter(a weekday?) I won't give up!!! Oh one more thing-Kroughs overhauled their outside a little. At first I wasn't sure if I liked it-the wood "entrance" seemed a little cheap and slapped together but after I really looked up close I just fell in love! It's adorable with lots of cute touches including a funny little sign that unfortunately I don't recall what it said but I liked it. Kroughs has been around for a long time, they have great live bands play often, the bar makes very very tasty drinks, there's always a lot of fun people which can make it a fun atmosphere...just steer clear of any food that looks like it could be fancy or difficult to make because I will admit every member of my family, except my oldest daughter, have had some pretty god awful food here, so come in get a nice salad or a burger or of course the nachos or French onion soup

All I can say is Wings, Wings, Wings! The microbrews are alright--not the best I've ever had but palatable. I always get the sampler--it's the best value oz for oz and I always like having a little bit of everything better than having a lot of one thing. The wings are excellent, and a great value on Tuesdays (wing night). It's a bit of a small place and you can get crowded out of the bar on busier nights (it's a little annoying that you must be at the bar to get the wing deal when it's so tiny). But overall I like the long history of the building, the log cabin charm, and the unique plaques garnishing most of the inner walls (an employee told me these used to be awarded for spending certain amounts of money here until the practice had to be discontinued because of some BS law against incenting people to boozery!)

If you're not from the area and enjoy little pubs with great handcrafted beers, Krough's is worth a visit. Afterward, take a stroll on the boardwalk on the lake and through the little plaza for some ice cream.

Good pub. They brew their own beer, so if you are not experimental with different beers, you may want to think twice. I happen to like most of their beers. Food is good. The menu a bit quirky. You would have to be a real food snob to be disappointed. Check it out! Parking is a pain unless they have the valet working.

Hit this restaurant about every other year usually year or so. Food is always pretty good. Usually get the Chicken Murphy which they always do a nice job on. The microbrews are what set it apart from other area places. The location is pretty as you're right at the corner of Lake Mohawk. What prevents this from being a very good restaurant are things nfortunately can't really be improved upon much. Price (in line with the area but still too pricey for non-fine dining- use a restaurant.com GC if you can), size (place is a bit cramped where you sometimes feel like you're stepping over people to get around) and parking (just not enough spaces at night and weekends). A good comparison would be Barley Creek in the Poconos- same type of food, serves microbrews but no parking issues or cramped feel. The pluses and minuses make this a 3 star place. With that said it's still one of the better restaurants in the Sparta area. Go during non-peak hours if possible.

The best thing about Kroghs is the charming exterior and the carved solid wood doors. Inside, it's often stuffy and even when there aren't crowds of people, the tables and chairs crammed in make it feel crowded. There is definitely a loyal following and I've always gone in wanting to like it and have it live up to its reputation as a local institution, but the food has always been *almost* good, just missing the mark in one way or another. Combined with the prices, it's not on my list of places to eat, though I do like to drive visitors by it for the bit of character it adds to the Plaza area.

Great location by Lake Mohawk. Cozy, wooden cabin feel. Great selection of food and brews. A bit pricy, but thats what you can do when you do not have too much competition in the area. Good place to meet up with friends and a nice, friendly staff. I'd definitely recommend their delicious burgers or taco salad with one of their home-brewed beers. I love the Oatmeal Stout!

This place just so happens to be a favorite hideaway for my husband and I. Such a cozy little building with good menu and beer options. I know this will sound bizarre, but I also really love the salads in those brown wooden bowls. Will have to go back sometime for dinner when they have live music and see what it's like then.

The food is mediocre and the beer is downright bad. I hate to be so harsh because I love seeing places brew their own beer and try something new especially local places keeping the scene going in North West Jersey but this place just falls flat for me. I went with a friend for his birthday and we each got a sampler and some nachos and the sampler was mediocre, it has been a while but I believe there were 6 beers and only 1 stood out. That was the Meadow Pale Ale. Maybe if you stick to that and the Oatmeal Stout which is supposedly good (seemed bland for an Oatmeal to me) you will have a better experience. As for the nachos they were servicable but left something to be desired.

I went on a Friday at 5 with my wife and son. While it was very busy we were still warmly greeted and quickly seated. The place has a dated feel, but once you settle in you realize there's a comfortable warmth they shouldn't change . Our server arrived immediately and walked us through the specials for the adults and recommendations for the young one. I should mention the service and knowledge of the menu was exceptional. I ordered their house seasonal IPA, which easily holds its own with a Dogfish Head 60 minute. The menu is more extensive then expected, but c'mon when you find yourself in a great brewpub you've got to order pub food! The nachos were outstanding and a generous portion even though we ordered the small. We ended up ordering 2 burgers cooked medium rare and one well done. As is our custom we cut them in half and were pleasantly surprised to find all 3 cooked correctly. The burgers were very good, the french fries were great. There's so many more beers to sample and food to try, there's no question I'll be back.

The location across from the Lake is great. The decor inside and out is fabulously rustic. A great place to enjoy a couple of martinis, a salad, and a steak--all at the bar of course. A cozy bar for all seasons. This restaurant/pub atmosphere is one not easily duplicated. They've got it all.

We love this place, especially the rustic log cabin atmosphere. Great place during the fall and winter when the fireplace is stoked up. The service is quick, competent, and friendly. We generally stick with the pub menu (even use it for take-out). The food is basic and well executed. It is best place in Sparta for a quick reliable meal.

I've lived in Lake Mohawk for 15 years and am quite famiiar with Kroghs. It's always been ok...the bartenders are fine but the food has had it's moments....some good and some really not so good. I stick to pub fare because I can't take a chance that say, the salmon dinner would be any good for the price you pay. It is kind of pricey but the atmosphere is great and it's right across from the lake so you can tie up your boat and go over for a cocktail.

  • Ryan H.

Great local pub, one of the only places that brews their own beer in the region but unfortunately the beer is mostly just okay. Food is decent if you stick to pub fare - go for any burger of the beef taco salad [edit: say it isn't so - they nixed the taco salad! Now we hardly go there anymore.]. The service has always been fast and fun at Krogh's. Prices are fair for the area - about $12 for a burger platter, on-site brewed beers $4 - $6. The environment is cool - Crane-style cabin from the 1920's, windows into the brew room and right across the street from the lake. Parking is tough most of the time, but you can get creative and do a short walk from down the road. Locals secret? The named brass plaques that fill the walls, posts and ceilings are now only offered to those who join their frequent diner program and spend $1,500 over time, but in the past (as you can guess by reading some of the more "creative" plaques), before they brewed their own beer, these plaques were given to those that consumed at least one of each of their 100 bottled beers they offered at the time. Why'd they stop that? The liquor board passed laws ruling out rewards perceived as encouraging heavy drinking! Go figure! Anyhow, look around and read some while you're there. You'll surely find some laughs.
