My last review gave raves for better service on our pick-up orders. Unfortunately, we're back to the original service. They ALWAYS forget to include at least one thing we ordered. This time, we specifically asked for pickled tomatoes. When I placed the order, he said he would put them in. When we went to pick up the order, we asked if the pickled tomatoes were in there - and we were told YES. Got back to the office, and of course they are NOT in the bag. This was a simple order, three pastrami sandwiches, one order of potato salad, and some pickled tomatoes. I can only imagine how much they get wrong on their bigger orders. (Oh, the pastrami is OK - nothing to write home about, but decent for the delis in this area.)

This is the worst Jewish Style deli in Livingston. They advertise a 6.95 sandwich special but charge 7.95 because they throw in a mini pickle and cole slaw. I ordered the corned beef and the mini pickle was the best thing that I ate. If you are looking for good deli I suggest Livingston Bagel, Nana's Deli, or Eppes Essen. I am surprised that Irvings is still open when there are such better choices in town.

Super friendly table service deli with fast service. Love that I can get a decent matzoh ball soup with my sandwich for $3. Dressed sandwiches are delicious, worth the little upcharge.

We just stopped by for a quick meal and it was delish! My husband had matzoh ball soup, potato knish & hot pastrami. I had hot pastrami and cornbeef with Russian and cole slaw. What a treat! Reminds me when we used to live in NYC and went to the Carnegie Deli! I asked and found out these are new owners. I am ordering in to the office next week because they deliver!

Irving's is a decent place to eat if you're in the area, but I wouldn't recommend a special trip here. I got the regular pastrami sandwich (dressed - cole slaw and dressing). The pastrami was okay but they were definitely chintzy with the meat. My sandwich was 80% slaw, 20% meat. Guess you have to order the "piled high" version to get some meat on your sandwich. If you're one that's in search of the best pastrami sandwich in NJ, you can probably scratch Irving's off the list. My favorite is still Goodman's in Berkeley Heights.

New owners at Irving's Deli bring talent & experience in the Deli business from NYC. We stopped in to say hello to a friend and ordered Pastrami & Corned Beef Sandwiches for lunch, Top notch along with good fresh coleslaw and those sour & half sour pickles always a must. The Pastrami & Corned Beef were perfect and totally delicious. So we suck down a few Dr. Browns to get the full treatment. These are deli sandwiches you only get in NYC. We will be back with friends and excited to be there for a Grand Opening in several weeks.

Surprised at all the positive Reviews. Went there with my wife for lunch since we were next door. Order something simple, Whole wheat wrap, Buffalo grilled chicken, Lettuce, tomato. Now this was on the menu, except without the whole wheat and breaded chicken. Guess what I got. Plain white wrap, in deli sliced buffalo chicken, you know the chicken that comes wrapped in plastic and deli's cut with the saw. Talk about over paying, 10+ dollars that cost $2.00 to make. Tasted awful going down. Needless to say it didn't agree with me. Gross. Meanwhile my wife got non-breaded grilled chicken in her salad. What Gives? Brought it up to management, but didn't even try to correct the issue. just was told that that is how they do it. When brought up to waiter about the wrap, he said it was whole wheat, which it clearly was not. So now I was being deceived by them. Never again, Rather stick with places I know are worth it.

This is my second time eating Irving's Deli food. This was a takeout order that was for a very special occasion. We wanted Reuben sandwiches to honor the first day of life for our grandson with the same name as the sandwich. We ordered the sandwiches, latkes, salads, matzo ball soup and cheesecake. The new dad picked up the $100+ order and brought it to the hospital. The six of us sat down to eat but Irving's did not include napkins, plastic silverware, the matzo ball soup, cole slaw that was supposed to come with the sandwiches and the apple sauce and sour cream for the latkes was also missing. And the latkes were overcooked. The sandwiches were good and the Irv Signature Salad was also tasty. But because so many items were missing it put a real damper on the meal. The reason for the one star is the treatment I received the next day when I called to explain the missing items. No apology, just excuses. Tary, the gentleman I spoke with, said he would give us a quart of matzo ball soup the next time we came in! Heck yes they should do this ---we PAID for the soup and never got it!! Tary acted as though he was doing us a big favor providing the soup we had already paid for. Irv, you need to do some retraining at the Deli on customer service.

2.5 stars I went to Irving's today for lunch with my dad. The atmosphere of the place was... well, there wasn't any. It was absolutely dead when we walked in (one other family dining in). I suppose that's to be expected for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon, but I expected to see some people in there. Our waiter (he didn't introduce himself) wasn't overly friendly or helpful, but quickly came over to take our order. We both ordered the roast beef sandwich for lunch, with a side of french fries to share. The sandwiches and fries were really good alone, and probably would've encouraged me to order food to-go another day... had it not been for the problem with the ketchup. I poured ketchup onto a plate to dip my french fries into, and I have to say, the ketchup was absolutely disgusting. It had clearly expired a long time ago, but no one had taken it off the table. I brought this issue up to my nameless waiter who basically shrugged it off and walked away. He clearly didn't care about serving long-expired ketchup, which makes me wonder about the health standards of the rest of the restaurant. He also couldn't be bothered to do the math and write our meal total on our bill, so we went up to the register without knowing the exact price of our meal. I gave this restaurant 2.5 stars, mostly because our sandwiches and french fries were really good. The rest of the experience left me wanting.

I've been eating at Irving's for years and am surprised by how negative the recent reviews are. Irving's prices are reasonable, the pickles & slaw free and abundant, the menu authentic, and the atmosphere warm. True, the last time I ate here (late summer 2014) the service wasn't amazing, but neither was the service terrible. The waiter didn't bring water over very quickly. When I needed a little dish and napkins I just went up to the counter and got them myself. But then again, the service wasn't terrible either. The waiter greeted us, gave us menus, took our orders at a reasonable moment, and the food came quickly. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at Irving's, but it's a decent, comfortable deli. The owner had a vision of a deli for deli-lovers. Between the old-fashioned menus, logo featuring an unapologetic Semitic profile, and the decor (obviously inspired by Katz's), this is a good restaurant.

Supposedly open for breakfast, but walked in and chairs still stacked on tables. Greeted by manager with unwelcoming "yeah we're open but we don't have much ready for a couple of hours." As we were waiting for knishes to be reheated we were startled by the roaches crawling across our table. Got up and left, so one star rating doesn't reflect our sampling of the food (though nothing looked fresh)...just our dining experience.

Route 10 is almost back to normal and I was able to visit Irving's for the 1st time in months. I missed it so dearly. The piled high pastrami sandwich is the best sandwich ever made by human hands.

Horrible service, place smelled, it was 8pm and they are opened until 10, we were the only people there and they were cleaning and sweeping and spraying chemicals while we were eating. NEVER AGAIN!

I am always disappointed when I go into Irvings. I don't know why I keep going back. When I walked into the restaurant today I was pleasantly surprised that they renovated (it was clean and no flies buzzing around) and I was promptly greeted by an attentive server. All good things and I thought maybe this time it will be different. The food was ok as usual ( despite the fact that the sandwiches have gotten increasingly smaller while the prices have seemed to go up in addition to the fact that they no longer bring the coleslaw and pickles to the table). When I went to pay I was greeted by someone, whom I can only guess was the manager. He was a grumpy man who completely tarnished my experience with his arrogance and attitude. That person is the only reason I am reviewing this restaurant and I guess I'll wait another six months before I consider trying this restaurant again. As of now I say don't waste your time or money.

Food is hit or miss but more importantly as my friends milkshake was being made... The man licked the spoon and then proceeded to use that same spoon to scoop the milkshake out of the blender - BUYER BEWARE

Stopped in for a quick lunch and was pleased to see a sign on the front window advertising a Tuesday Pastrami Sandwich Special- yeah, it was Tuesday. Ordered "2 pastrami sandwich specials" and while they seemed a bit skimpy, we enjoyed the fresh rye bread and warm meat. We daughter and I commented on why we don't make a practice of eating there more often and moments later, when paying the bill, we got the answer- loud and clear. Evidently, the sign on the front window advertising the pastrami sandwich special only applied to take out. The manager (who specializes in rudeness!) said that while I it doesn't say take out only, it doesn't say eat in either. The server didn't warn us that this was an issue when we ordered. We will be sure to steer clear of this place permanently. Consumers, beware of the bait and switch tactic- it's the only thing alive and well at Irvings.

If you're looking for a good alternative to Eppes Essen in Livingston, this isn't it. I stopped in recently for what should have been a simple, "fool-proof" snack... an order of French Fries and a Snapple. After sitting in the nearly empty dining room for almost fifteen minutes without being acknowledged, I got up and asked the manager if somebody could take my order. Hearing this, a waiter, who had been sitting at a nearby table doing nothing, stood up and walked over to take my order. Five more minutes pass before he returned with a glass of ice and the Snapple. When I poured the drink into the glass, several bugs floated to the top. The waiter offered no apology, nor did he register any surprise. I'm guessing bugs are a regular problem here. The waiter just took the glass away and didn't replace it. He also didn't replace the Snapple that I just wasted. Another ten minutes passed while I waited at my table and watched the waiter engage in a heated conversation with another employee a few feet away. Frustrated, I got up and walked over to inquire about my order. Without moving, he tells me "it's on the way". This just seemed rude, but it turned out that the reason he didn't need to ask the kitchen about my order was because he then walked behind the counter, took out a bag of frozen fries and poured them into the deep fryer himself. Aside from the fact that it's just weird that the waiter is apparently also the cook, he just told me "it's on the way", as if the kitchen were backed up. He had to know I was watching him do this. He either thought I was an idiot, or he just didn't care what I thought. In any event, that was the final straw. I canceled my order and left. The manager, who sits behind the cash register at the front door, didn't ask a question or express any sort of concern that I had been in his restaurant for more than thirty minutes and was now leaving hungry and very disgruntled. What a terrible experience across the board. I won't be back, ever. (NOTE: If there was an option to give zero stars, that's the score this mess of a restaurant would get.)

I've been to Irving's four times now and I can't say that I've had a bad experience there...ever. Is it expensive? Yep, probably a bit high, but you aren't finishing one of the piled high sandwiches unless you're a professional eater or really, REALLY hungry! Is the service top notch? Nah, but I've never experienced the type of bad service some of the other Yelpers described. In fact, the only time we had 'bad' service it was simply a very slow waitress and a long wait for our food...but the place was packed. As for the food, I really love their sandwiches. Last time I was there I had a Reuben combo-half corned beef and half roasted turkey. It was one of the best sandwiches I had ever eaten (in fact, writing about it makes me want to go there again soon), and I've eaten a LOT of sandwiches. However, my favorite thing to get at Irving's is their chicken noodle or matzoh ball soup (always order it with a sandwich). I love chicken soup and the soup here is absolutely incredible...I wish I was more of a food critic so I could explain to you how all the delicious ingredients explode with flavor in your mouth. I'm a little bummed at the the bad reviews because I would recommend Irving's to anyone who loves a great sandwich, delicious soup, and pretty much anything else they serve!

After being treated unwelcome from panevino, we stumble along this deli!!! I just ate an amazing pastrami!! Just like the one in the city! Both amazing but nice to find a place close to home, service was nice! felt very welcome! Thanks

One of the best deli's ever! Not sure what people are complaining about. My experience was amazing. Love the ambience, the staff is friendly and the food is amazing. Love the split pea soup and mushroom and barley soup. The pastrami sandwich is fantastic. Prices are in line with Eppes Essen and other deli's in the area. The latkas and stuffed cabbage are fantastic. I catered a super bowl party recently and my guests were blown away with the sloppy joes. And the desserts, so good.

This place isn't Katz's. Terrible wait staff. The menu seems good until you order and get a sandwich worthy of a box from a gas station. The pickles are good but the place in Edison crushes them. Save yourself the money and get cold cuts at Shoprite and do it yourself.

This place is a diamond in the rough. If you haven't tried their split pea soup yet, you are truly missing out on something very special. The staff is super nice too.

Unfortunately, came here again and it was horrible. The food was rotten and unpalatable. Management made no effort to fix it. Every dish we got was bad. The tongue was bad, the chopped liver was bad, it all tasted sour and rotten. Also, there was a fly in the cheesecake display case. It was dead, and stuck to the cheesecake. We noticed when we went to pay, and told the manager or person at the register. He seemed unphased.

I was a HUGE fan when they first opened, but this place has gone downhill in a hurry. The sit down service is erratic at best. Half the time you're seated in a section that seems to have no server at all. When that happens, good luck flagging somebody down. They all do a great job of pretending they don't even notice you. It's quite odd. The food is not on par with what it once was either. Pastrami is no longer regularly hand sliced. It's all together too fatty and inconsistent as well. In fact while the pastrami has gone from outstanding to just good, the rest of the food is now average at best. Overall, they are now significantly behind Eppes Essen at the same price point in terms of both food and service. AVOID THE PICKLES!!! They are not clean. They are passed from table to table. Or the uneaten ones are simply tossed back into the barrel with the rest. Disgusting!!! This place offers nothing better than take-out if you're in the area and want a decent Jewish style sandwich or soup. It is not a destination location.

Irving's was the first place I tried a pastrami sandwich and man was it good! And huge! Everyone I have eaten here with likes the food, especially my Jewish mother who wants it every time she comes to visit. The sandwiches are piled high and there is a good variety to choose from including brisket (try it as a cheesesteak, so good!!!), chicken, turkey and roastbeef, among other specialties. The pea soup is thick and tasty and the knishes are cooked just right. Ask for a sample of something if you're not sure what you're in the mood for - they're awesome like that. Come hungry - everything here seems super sized and can be made even bigger to order. The restaurant is big with lots of seating, a few TVs and an old school diner feel. Service is the only downfall I've experienced here, especially when they bring your food and everyone else at the table is still waiting for their entree.

Stopped in for lunch and had a Ruben Dog ... Wow , well worth it. Delicious with a multi layered flavor profile. Tasty beef dog with pastrami .. How can you go wrong. Fries were also very good and done to perfection and delivered hot to the table.

We had seen the ads on TV for this place and were so excited to go there. To start off, the sandwiches they show on the ad are the larger size sandwich.(they have 2 sizes) so when we went in and saw that on the menu we were surprised. We got the idea from the TV ad that they were all that big. They did have great pickles. The Matzoh ball soup was bland. The matzoh ball itself was good, but the broth was flavorless. Whole Foods makes better. I was surprised to see that the tea and soda was $3.00, I thought that was high for beverages. The service was slow and the waitress forgot to bring something we had ordered. For $30 dollars for 2 for lunch, we were very disappointed.

Not as good as Harold's, but still pretty good. I had the pastrami on rye piled high. Pickles were excellent. Service typical. Good food from the old country. Decor is from the lower east side of Manhattan with great sayings and pictures on the wall.

Went to this place after seeing a commercial on ESPN late one night. The pastrami looked so awesome. The place is crap. It isn't clean. The Matzo soup had not flavor. The pastrami was thickly sliced, hot pink, cold, and flavorless (as opposed to the hot juicy and thinly sliced stuff they showed on the commercial). Same goes for the corned beef. The best thing about the meal was the Dr. Brown's Black Cherry Soda.

Did I detect Bottom Round for their meat in the Pastrami ? Hobby's in Newark has best corned beef hands down.

Irving's has gone downhill. We used to like it, but this week's visit was our last. We had to remind our server to bring pickles and cole slaw. Neither was appealing -- we got a small bowl of dried-out pickles, and slaw that might have been OK a week ago, but was dry and generally awful. Matzoh ball soup: tepid, soggy noodles, and the worst matzoh balls I've ever tasted. Corned beef: a little on the fatty side, but otherwise OK. The rest of the meal was OK, except we had to remind the server to bring ketchup and mustard, too. If I'm going to eat food that's bad for me, it needs to be good food with good service. Otherwise, it's just not worth it. I'm disappointed, because they used to be a lot better.

    (2)
  • Peter G.

over-priced rip off. Not too clean. Service very slow. I thought I was ordering a bottle of Brown's cream soda. Instead a small plastic glass came, filled with ice and a little soda. When I got the check it cost $2.95. Nobody told me it was free refills, but I couldn't have gotten the waitress's attention anyway. A fly was buzzing around my table.

Sitting all by itself in a sort of strip mall, well away from other dining options, Irving's delivers to the max. With an old world deli atmosphere, the food is just as classic as the ambiance. Popped in after some shopping and we each ordered a sandwich, piled high and dressed. One corn beef and one pastrami, both to split. If the smell alone didn't get your mouth watering the complimentary pickles and cole slaw they brought to the table really gets your appetite going. Then the sandwiches came and they did not disappoint. Both were perfectly seasoned and cooked and more than you could possibly. It's a great spot to grab a good bite any time of the week. Can't wait to go back and get another.

Had the pastrami sandwich - had better but still very good. Matzo ball soup had no flavor and the split pea soup was bland also. My son had an okay burger. This place is not my favorite Jewish deli - once is enough for me here.

Pastrami sandwich is amazing.. just amazing. Not sure where all the bad reviews are coming from but they have a great pastrami sandwich. The service could be slightly better but its not bad. It is however very expensive. But worth it for a great sandwich.

  • Dorie B.

Terrible service, food was bland and mediocre. Big change from when they first opened. Brisket was dry and hard, pastrami no longer hand carved. Go to Eppes instead-more expensive but the food is MUCH better.

I wasn't in love with Irving's when I first went a few years ago. But I started going again & I'm hooked with the great pastrami, corn beef & rare roar beef sandwiches. The mushroom barley soup is very good too. This place is comfortable and the people who run it are nice. I highly suggest that you try and enjoy this old style Jewish deli.

Not a fan. The corned beef is tough and rubbery. I was expecting better. I love the decor and the setup. If they can get the corned beef and pastrami back on track, I'll try it again.

Surprised this place is still open! Once in a while I will stop in for a sandwich when at the Farmers market. Sandwiches are ok but not worth the price. This restaurant is poorly run and the service is not good. For example, I went in the other day for a quick sandwich. There was at least 8 employees that all seemed challenged. 3 of them were making food for themselves. Irvings was empty and there was only two tables with customers. The lady behind the counter took my order then began to text on her phone. After a couple of minutes I looked at her funny so she then put her phone down and began to make my sandwich. Without washing her hands! I walked out and will not be back. Sorry Irving!

I have been to Irving's over the years, and I generally was pretty happy with it, it was close to the experience of a good NY Deli, which there used to be a lot of. I have to say I have been disappointed with the last couple of times I went there. The prices by NY standards are not bad, but what bothers me is the quality. The pastrami, which used to be standout, has regressed to the level of supermarket pastrami and that is a big deal. I got Reubens as takeout the last time I had food there this weekend, and not only was the pastrami poor, but the cheese on it was inedible, even after reheating it carefully it was not pleasant to eat. I have to wonder if they are trying to cheapen up to save on costs, in the past when I got a takeout order there was a generous serving of pickles, this time there were only 2 small pickles. If that were the only complaint I wouldn't care, but across the board I sense that the quality is going down and that is a sad thing to experience, I used to enjoy going here, now I'll find someplace else (there is another deli a couple of miles down the road in Livingston whose food last time I was there was still very good).

I have been going here for 2 years and have loved it up until the other night. Under the counter where you place to-go orders I had seen at least 15 cockroaches. When you see one, there are tons more. I was disgusted about that and will never go back.

This is probably one of the best deli's i have ever been to. I stumbled upon this place during the aftermaths of hurricane sandy and no food places were open within a 2 mile radius of where i lived. We went around 3, so the crowd was sparse. Initially I was a little confused about the type of food it served because the decoration was diner styled, but then they had sandwiches and soups that were more of a deli variety. We ordered the jr. reuben (i figured it was going to be huge, and I was right), Irv's signature salad, mushroom barley soup and the chicken noodle soup. The Reuben was AMAZING. The Russian sauce was incredible, possibly the best deli beef I have ever had in my life, and they gave you so much of it! The soups were both amazing as well. I was very impressed that they made the food right in front of you. I saw them cut up the lettuce to make the salad and slice the beef to make the reuben. I never thought actually seeing food getting made would be such a plus, but it was! The salad also tastes great. It's a perfect blend of flavor and the dressing was so good! The only thing that lost the star was the decor and the service. I found the decor very tacky (admittedly it was a deli... but still) and the atmosphere was not very welcoming. But regardless, i'm definitely coming here more in the future!

Irving's in Livingston is alright, but by no means impressed me, especially given their prices. I called in an order to go at 11am on a weekday while shopping on Route 10. I had heard good things so I thought I'd give it a shot. I came in and picked up my order, but when I got home, realized they had given me the wrong order. Luckily I only live a few minutes away, but it doesn't bode well when they can't give you the right order when there wasn't even a lunch rush yet (literally only other person inside ordering at the counter, and one other take out order) When I got home, I was still excited to try out my sandwich, as Reubens are one of my favorites. Especially if I'm charged $15 for a lunch time Reuben, I'm expecting it to be pretty darned good, and/or pretty darned big. Disappointingly, it was neither. It was just decent - both in taste and size. For $15, I was really hoping for at least one or the other. Wouldn't recommend going out of your way for this one.

Visited this restaurant for the first time yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing! Tender corned beef AND pastrami. Super delicious cole slaw! Hearty mushroom barley soup! Decadent NY style cheesecake! Stellar wait service. Eddie we WILL be back!

Pretty overall disappointed with this place, although I will admit that its not all bad. The atmosphere, which is the best thing about this place, is quite charming. We went on a Saturday night and it took a good 5 - 10 minutes before anyone seemed to notice, us, and then getting our drinks took another 5+ minutes. Understandable if it's busy, but there were about 4 other tables in the whole place, and at least one or two other people waiting on them... The complimentary pickles and coleslaw were good, matzoh ball soup tasty although nothing amazing. Then our entrees arrived with no mention of the appetizer we had ordered. When I mentioned this the server said, "Sorry, I didn't know you wanted everything at once," picked up the sandwiches, and walked back to the kitchen. Um. There are several problems with this: 1) We didn't want everything at once, we wanted the appetizer before the entree, which, I had previously thought, was pretty standard, 2) Don't walk away with the sandwiches when you've already brought them out to the table. He brings out the appetizer, pretty much ignores my "But you didn't need to bring the sandwiches back to the kitchen..." and a few minutes later my fiance had to interrupt him as he sat at a neighboring table, chatting, in order to regain our sandwiches. He spent the rest of the time continuing to chill at neighboring table. We ate our food: kishka (OK, but Eppe's Essen's is better), turkey reuben (pretty good), French dip (OK). We got our leftovers wrapped and requested their dessert sampler (4 half-slices of cakes, etc. for $9.95) to go. We get home and dig in awhile later. In general, the desserts tasted like fridge and about 50% got thrown out. It's cheaper than Eppe's Essen, but overall the quality of the food and service are significantly lower. I'd rather pay more.

Excellent local kosher-style (I don't think they're actually kosher) deli on Rt 10. The place has an oldschool look, and compared to it's nearest competition (Eppes Essen), it's much cleaner and much more contemporary in attitude. The staff (and I think owners?) have always been extremely, extremely nice and grateful for the business. Excellent pastrami, corned beef, and slaw. I tried a burger, which was good, but I recall the chicken salad being a bit bland. I dont think I've ordered anything else here, but that's because I'm convicted in the deliciousness of the 2-person pastrami/corned beef sandwich split-a-roo. If you're not familiar with Jewish deli, you'll be shocked at the price for a sandwich ($13-19), but even more shocked when you're handed your plate/to go bag and your bag gives out under the weight. Make 2 meals out of a sandwich, or make sure you're not making close conversation with anyone for at least a few days. Although pastrami is indeed considered by some to be the most sensual of the cured meats, others may not appreciate it on your breath.

Need a corned beef or pastrami sandwich? don't feel like going to NYC? This place will do ya! Nice thick sandwiches, pea soup that is really great and the best stuffed cabbage I've ever had. Rt 10 in Livingstein...(lol) next to a couple now defunct (at this time) empty stores. Pretty cool ambiance and I believe they have comedy nights and cruise nights fir car guy' in the summer. Oh yea, the cheese cake is a great also. Ask to be served by Wally, the guy gets it right every time, doesn't even write it down. Wally is hip dude and a great server!

WE ENDED GETTING UP AND WALKING RIGHT OUT of this restaurant, and here's why. . . This was the 2nd trip to Irving's Deli. The first trip was mediocre - servings were on the light side for a sandwich (only) which costs $13 in the suburbs of NJ...and service was slow as the other reviewers have indicated -- but we thought we'd give another try today. WHAT A MISTAKE IT WAS. As we walked in, someone half-greeted us and told us to take any seat in the place, but didn't bother to come all the way up to the front door to say it. The place was pretty empty for lunch at 12:30pm, I'd say 4 tables were occupied and 3 people in line at the deli counter (take out). That was the first indicator that we shouldn't have walked in. It's right in the middle of lunch time, and only 4 tables of customers. After we seated ourselves -- (by the way, in the middle of the room not on the side or corner out of view), our table of four just sat and waited for someone to come. . . No one came. We tried to flag one of the two waitresses down -- no success... No one came. We waited some more. . . No one came. Usually, wait staff will come by, give you water or take your drink orders or at least say they'll be right with us. NOPE, nothing here. . . No one came. I stood up, trying to wave one of the waitresses that was talking to another table of guests toward the back -- she just ignored me. . . No one came. Then we saw the 2nd waitress take the orders of a table of people that came in AFTER us -- and walked right by us, ignoring the "EXCUSE ME, EXCUSE ME..." plea for attention I was saying loudly to her. . . No one came. I know exactly how long we waited since I received a call on my cell phone as we were first walking in the door. And as we were walking out of the place, it was 16 minutes later according to the time/date stamp of the call log on my cell phone. SIXTEEN MINUTES of sitting at a table and NO ONE, NOT A SINGLE EMPLOYEE CAME BY TO OUR TABLE. As we're leaving, one of the guys finally made eye contact with me, shrugging his shoulders as if puzzled for why we're walking out or that something is wrong. Like it's our fault. Oh, now you notice me? C'mon. You might say this was a one-time thing, but the thing is that we've been there before, and get mediocre service then too. WHY GAMBLE ON A BAD SERVICE EXPERIENCE when there's tons of other eating options on Route 10 in Livingston and East Hanover? And the $12 sandwiches is not bringing in the crowds either. . . for a reason. Do yourself a favor and AVOID having to write ANOTHER BAD YELP REVIEW OF IRVING'S DELI.

I'm surprised by all the negative reviews as I've had consistently good meals at Irving's. Indeed there have been some ups & downs at times with staff, but the food has always been very good. We always order the extra lean sandwiches, but LOVE the turkey sandwich too. Matzo ball soup is also very good -- a little on the salty side, but hey, it's matzo ball soup! Full sour pickles are great. We've also enjoyed the liverwurst sandwich and blintzes. Lunch is a total deal -- like $6. Breakfast looks like a great option too, but we've never been. Someone complained about portions in a prior review. If anything Irving's portions are too big. We always split a "half sandwich" among 2 adults. We also love that they have Bolyston sodas on tap -- especially the endless refill of the diet birch beer. Our daughter loves this place. Irving's is very family/group friendly with lots of wide open seating options. She can be a little or a lot noisy with no one complaining. The owner is very friendly, but we do wish he would work on better managing the grime. The bathrooms, floor and furniture can be a little sticky -- a la a "diner gunky." All in all I would still recommend and will continue heading to Irving's to satisfy the occasional need for great corned beef.

first time here. Yes, I agree the service is challenged from the standpoint of it is slow. But when you get the food, it is worth the wait. Figuring a trip to Brooklyn would waste a lot more time plus the tolls and parking etc. Anyway, back to the food. Had a real deli tasting roast turkey sandwich with russian, home made cole slaw, lentil soup, my wife had a western omelette (she wasn't in the deli mood but they swapped home made potato pancakes for home fries so she had deli after all) and great pickles. Topped off with Dr. Brown's Cel Ray. Life is good. I am on a low salt diet after an operation but we will be back for the rest of the menu. the place is clean. It has an authentic NY Deli curb appeal. the servers were interesting and very diverse so that has its appeal as well. Remember the wait to go over the bridge and you'll opt to wait an extra 10 minutes here and skip the trip to the city.

I visited IRVING'S on Sat., Oct. 4th, 2008 at around 3 pm The place is modeled after Katz's deli in NYC... GREAT pastrami!!!! Real decent brisket... (corned beef did not look that succulent to me, though, so stick to the pastrami ! (with brisket as your 2nd choice) And the owners were so nice to us! They are 2 cousins who grew up right across the street from each other in Paramus. I asked what brand of pastrami they use, and was told they get it from a 4th generation wholesale distributor in the Bronx. Then they spice it and cook it right in their deli. Much better than most places, that are just "slicer joints".... just slicing up Hebrew National brand that is already cooked. Most delis in south Florida fit that term. IRVING'S is a true deli.. This deli is located in the shopping center where Toys R Us and Office Depot are.... but the signage for Irvings is real bad....(tough to read script) Located in north Jersey, within an hour from NYC, and most parts of north Jersey. IMO, this deli does not get the publicity it deserves. So I had to come along, and post some Irving's PICS and give this place some legitimacy !

We went to Irving's this past weekend [1.23.10] and were greeted by the owner at the door. The service was very friendly and good and they make you feel right at home. We were seated promptly and were given a small bowl of cole slaw - very good and a bowl of pickles - also very good. I ordered the soup and half a sandwich combo - Matzoh ball soup - yum! and roast beef sandwich. There was plenty of meat for half a sandwich and it was nice and tender, and red! My husband (from Montreal) ordered half a hot pastrami sandwich and half a corned beef sandwich. He was very pleased with the hot pastrami and said it was almost as good as Schwartz's (smoked meat in Montreal). We will definitely be back there again (and order platters for our Superbowl party). I'm so glad we were able to find a really good kosher deli in the area. We have tried Harold's New York Deli in the past and have not found it to our liking.

Hmm...Maybe I went at the wrong time or got the wrong thing because I wasn't impressed at ALL. I got the roast beef and Bf got the jumbo hotdog. My roast beef, though plentiful, was NOT PINK how I like it but brown and dry. Didn't really have much flavor either. The hotdog was big, but still too small for the huge roll. It, er...came up short if you know what I mean. Coleslaw was good and the people were friendly. I am kicking myself for not trying the pastrami since that seems really popular but not sure if I'd be back to give it a second chance since I recently tried eppe essen close by and it rocked my socks. Time will tell if I'll be back again...

Every time I try this place I so want to love it. You come to New York style deli's to order 1 of 2 things - corned beef or pastrami. Those 2 items are the standard of which all NY Style Delis are judged. Every time I go to Irving's I expect greatness and I am always disappointed. I never get that "old school" spice/bite in their corned beef or pastrami. The texture is also slightly mushy with no chew. Maybe thats from the hand slicing as opposed to machine. I know I'll go to Irving's again someday - hoping for greatness again.

My fiancé and I checked this place out for the first time today. They started out with the pickles, pickled tomato etc. We then ordered disco fries. She had a turkey burger and I had a corned beef sandwich. We left saying it was good. In about a half hour we both had the runs! Not a good first impression. Don't think we will be going back here.

As a Six Grader growing up in Howard Beach, Queens, making the decision of which restaurant on Cross Bay Boulevard to allocate my once-a-week "Restaurant lunch money" to was akin to the thought process Peyton Manning employs as he sets back to pass each time tomorrow in the Super Bowl. Should he go to the tough Dallas Clark over the middle? What about sure-handed veteran Reggie Wayne for a larger gain? Lest we not forget the upstart Austin Collie? Well, in the mid 1970s, as I turned up Cross Bay Boulevard looking for relief from stale Turkey Roll Sandwiches that my Mom put together while smoking Cigarettes and laughing watching "Maude," I had to choose from the $1.06 "Snack Box" at Kentucky Fried Chicken, 2 Slices and a Coke at good old reliable Gino's OR I could do something radical - I could hold off a week and combine 2 weeks of Restaurant Lunch Money and feast on a Corn Beef Sandwich on Club with a Square Fried Knish and Black Cherry Soda from the Local Deli. I know, life was tough for me and it's making those types of decisions which has shaped me into the Man that I am today - in more ways than one! But seriously, the Local Deli eventually went the way of the KFC Snack Box and has been taken over by Good - but not Great - Chain Delis - until IRVING'S. Irving's is THAT Local Deli that your father (and now me) told you about. The best case I can make is that my Mother complains no matter where I take her but when I took her to Irving's she was too busy enjoying the Coleslaw and Pickles to take her head up from the Menu! Everything from the Turkey Sandwiches to the fried Square Potato Knishes to even the Matzoh Brie is EXCELLENT. More importantly, the Service Staff takes their jobs as seriously as I take mine and the result is BOTH a GREAT present day AND nostalgic dining experience well worth the drive to Irving's in suburban Northern New Jersey. While I joke about my Mom, it did make me feel good to take her to a restaurant that completely satisfied her and made her smile. As I now reside in Los Angeles where a Square Knish is nowhere in sight (but it doesn't really matter because there are beautiful woman everywhere you turn), I settle for "Kantor's" and to those who aren't fortunate to know better - think of Irving's as "Kantor's East" - a line a friend of mine termed when we met there for breakfast this morning. Look, this is a lovely place to enjoy great food, a nice environment withpeople who take great pride in making sure you get exactly what you wanted when you got in your car and directed it toward Irving's. That's rare these days - so try and check this place out. Your kids will dig it and your folks will leave you alone and eat - and you will have some peace and quiet. They also deliver within the general area and they cater. Treat yourself.

We went here for lunch recently because my husband saw an advertisement nearby when we were shopping ... he had the pastrami sandwich and enjoyed it. I had a roast beef sandwich and it was fine. We shared some sides of cole slaw, potato pancakes and a knish, and still had lots to bring home. The complimentary pickles were also tasty. I wish I had tried the brisket rather than the roast beef, because it was just deli meat and bread. I also wish they had some "specialty" sandwiches to choose from. Halfway through my sandwich I saw that they offer breakfast all day, and I was immediately kicking myself for not getting the challah bread French toast. Our meal was not bad at all, but nothing special. We left satisfied but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

avoid this joint. at least for breakfast or brunch. it was an AWFUL experience. i currently live in LA, but grew up jewish in philly and know a thing or two about deli's having lived in my fave establishments in both philly and NYC for years and years. flat out: irving's sucks. from top to bottom and in some painfully unfortunate ways. i took my folks there for brunch during memorial day weekend and: 1) the place was empty 2) the service was awful and understaffed despite being empty 3) there were flies and bugs at our table 4) the food was brought out at different times 5) the french toast wasn't cooked 6) they were out of most every bagel you could think of 7) the coffee was old and stale and, to top it off, at the end of the meal as we were paying, the owner asked, so how was everything? i said, "to be honest? not that great, i'm sorry to say..." his response, literally: "well, we like when our customers are polite. have a nice day." translation: "i don't really care about your thoughts. now move along." i'd never go back there, i'd never recommend it to anyone and let's all just "move along", shall we?

I am really glad I found this place...one thing I do have to share is that the service is exceptional! I have always been greeted upon walking in and I have never been neglected by the wait staff at all. If you are a frequent customer, the waiters usually remember you and treat you as if they know you. The one dish I was not happy with was the cream cheese on date nut bread. For some reason, I expected it to tasted more like the nutted cheese I used to get at Chock Full O'Nuts years ago...I thought the bread was much too sweet. The other thing I do not care for is that they charge $5 for delivery -- that charge makes it worth my while to drive from my office in Roseland to pick up. If I am very busy, I will not order if I cannot sit down and eat or pick it up. On the other hand, the staff is very nice and you will always get pickles and pickled tomatoes. I definitely recommend this place...it's like a mini-Junior's without the huge cheesecake selection. Lunch for 2 is usually about $30.

In a strip mall next to a farmers market, I thought I'd grab a sandwich for lunch. They're running a lunch special,$4.95 for a pastrami, corned beef, turkey etc. your choice, comes with coleslaw and pickles. I ordered corned beef and my friend had the pastrami. All I can say is WOW! The meat on both sandwiches was tender and delicious. The sandwiches were piled high with meat, the rye bread was fresh. We will definitely be back. Oh and the service was fast and friendly. Couldn't have been better.

To enter Irving's Delicatessen is to take a step back in time, a pretty big step in fact -- about five decades. Oldies of the 50s and 60s play on the sound system and the walls are festooned with framed photos of movie stars and entertainers, all long since gone. Whether this is a deliberate attempt to evoke a sense of pleasurable nostalgia among the mostly gray-haired clientele or a desperate attempt to hang on to memories of a simpler time when business was better is not clear. I discovered Irv's in a New York Times article about the fading fortunes of Jewish delicatessens in today's suburbs. They got the right place. However, I work nearby and so now go there occasionally for lunch. The dining room is a large, brightly lit space with a concrete floor and pressed tin ceiling. Enough wooden tables to accommodate hundreds occupy the cavernous room, but almost all are empty. A big neon sign on the back wall proclaims "huge servings at Irvings," but its message is belied by the rather meager portions of the dishes I've tried. Prices are reasonable if you stick to the daily specials, but otherwise tend to be quite high for what you get. Soon after you sit down a server brings a bowl of pickles to your table (did I just see him retrieve it from another table across the room?). I'm a little leery, wondering how many times the bowl's contents may have been recycled, but I eat the pickles anyway. They taste a little like soap. As for the rest of the food, it's just okay. The brisket, for example, which is available in a sandwich or on a platter (where it's advertised as Irv's famous pot roast), comprises thin slices from the flat cut, not the more succulent point. As a result it's a bit dry, but tender and tasty enough. The sandwiches are plain -- just two pieces of unremarkable bread (think Arnold's) with the meat in between. Mustard, ketchup, and hot sauce are available from bottles on the table. Horseradish sauce, which you have to ask for, is bland, diluted I think with too much Miracle Whip. The chicken soup, served in a tiny bowl, contains perfect little cubes of carrots and meat, which look suspiciously as if they might have come from a can, but the broth is hot and salty, which is good. The lentil soup could use some of the salt they put in the chicken. The aforementioned pot roast platter comes with a few steamed, flavorless, previously frozen vegetables, and a dollop of whipped potatoes, real or fake it's hard to say. Everything's covered with a passable brown gravy. I once almost ordered the stuffed cabbage platter, but my server tactfully steered me in another direction. I've tried the meatloaf too. It's .... meatloaf. There's a large selection of desserts, all elaborately decorated and definitely not homemade. They're displayed in all their tarted up glory in a glass case near the entrance. I'm not sure this is a good idea; they might make someone who appreciates a good cake or pie turn around and walk out. So to summarize, I think this is an okay place if you live or work nearby and are tired of McDonald's and Subway. But I doubt many Jewish grandmothers would feel threatened by the food served here.

Ok- so I need to return next time I am in NJ but this review is for the sloppy joes. After I raved about this place to my family, we chose Irvings to get sloppy joes for our last night before returning to LA. We ordered one with turkey and one with roast beef ad two milkshakes to go. The bill was $50. I know SJs are always big sandwiches but... I always get them when in NJ and never pay prices like that. What stunk was that they made the roast beef one with both turkey and roast beef and to be honest they were really dry. Didn't love the cole slaw. I'm not done with Irving's- I'll be back for the soup and knishes but never again for a sloppy joe.

Terrible service, What a change from when they first opened. pastrami was nervy & cold, They reheated the whole sandwich in the microwave, very sad. Try Eppes just up the road at 105 E Mount Pleasant Ave, Livingston, instead Much better food.

  • Skippy M.

Better priced that most delis. I usually just get sliced corned beef, rye bread and other morsels to bring home. They can be hit or miss on sandwiches and the service can be very spotty. I make my own sandwiches at home. Since It's next to the Rt.10 farmers market, it's convenient to drop in and get a 1/2 pound of meat for the family.

The place is renovated and looks nicer however the food isn't as good. "Piled-high" doesn't seem to have near the same meaning. They seem to be rationing pickles as if cucumbers are going extinct. Corned beef was terrible (they might want to take this off the menu) In my opinion, the food isn't worth the cost. The prices are similar to NYC and not close to the quality. In addition, the staff seems like they are still figuring things out. New ownership needs to figure things out. Will not be back.

Went there last Monday and ordered 2 pastrami sandwiches to go. I'm watching the cashier place them in the bag with only some napkins. I asked about the pickles (I have been going there for years and pickles and mustard was always included), his reply was that they don't come with the sandwich. "They did every other time that I came here" He replied, " that's a $1 upgrade". Hey.... I just spend close to $15 on two sandwiches and you can't give me 1/2 pickle for each sandwich? Really? Loosing a customer over a pickle..... You got it Irving's !!!

I haven't been here in such a long time, but yesterday (7/29 @3:30pm) I decided to stop in. Craving a good corned beef! There was a nice young man behind the counter who greeted me immediately and helped me decide what "size" sandwich I wanted, large is $13.95. Ok, we will get that one. I was happy to see the grouchy guy that USED to be there--wasn't! While he made our sandwiches, another super nice young man asked me if I would like anything else and directed me to the register.. Noticed they changed the décor around, moved the register to the end of the deli line (smart!). I asked for extra pickles (my mom loves them) and I wasn't sure the proper name (sour, half sour?) which the young man quickly got for me and didn't even seem bothered that I asked for that. Previously, asking for extra pickles was always met with an eye roll. Got the food home and it was as I hoped, thinly sliced, fresh rye, a little fat (which you need) and yes, extra pickles. 13.95 sounds high for a sandwich, but I do feel its worth it.. juicy, but not greasy, rye that was so fresh it stuck to your teeth.. coleslaw, Russian dressing and mustard was included with it. Much better than it had been before..

Went again (only because TOMO's was closed) and it was right down rt 10 I order the pile high brisket and stuffed derma Derma is now sans derma and is deep fried (and surprisingly came with gross brown gravy) Was good but it's not the stuffed derma i'm used to (btw the gravy was never touched) My brisket? gross dry fatty Listen, I like fat on my meat. This was 1/3 fat. each slice of meat had a 1 inch sliver of fat on it. I didn't want a little meat with my fat. I'll pass next time and go up the road a bit to eppies.

Time has not been kind to Irving's. The "huge servings at Irving's" mantra is a thing of the past. The standard pastrami is kind of skimpy and the overstuffed is like their old regular. And it can be chewy, not the moist melt-in-your-mouth of the 2009 vintage. Service is still first-rate but with the near-empty dining room it should be! Seems like the food went south and took the patrons with it.

Used to be a really good deli until it was recently sold. Prices have gone up and unfortunately quality has gone down. It is too bad since there are not many real old fashioned delis any more. I don't even think the person who bought the restaurant is even familiar with real deli food. It takes a person who really knows the cuisine to give you good derma, kreplach, matzo balls, brisket, corned beef and tongue. Unfortunately under the new owner this is now a place to avoid like chicken fat!!

New York style deli specializing in pastrami. Also brisket and corned beef . Lots of other deli fare with a large dessert selection. Worth dropping by if you're in the area, possibly shopping at the many strip malls and big box stores on Route 10. Take a ticket, step up to the long counter them order and pay at the in the corner. Lots of seating, though the decor tries a little too hard on the atmosphere.

I have been to Irving's several times and must say that the place started off as Okay, but the past two visits have been progressively worse and worse. The people who manage the place have no idea about how to run a business or about customer service. The staff have no clue as to what they are doing and are very slow at best. On my last and final visit I had ordered a turkey burger. I should have known I was in for trouble when the server asked me " how do you want it cooked?" last I checked, poultry should be cooked through. I don't think a medium rare turkey burger would be appetizing. The T-burger arrives and look to be cooked ( which it was) but after taking the first bite the taste seemed strange. I took one more bite and it was even stranger. It tasted kind of old, as if it had been sitting around one too many days. I had to flag down the server to notify her of it. I explained to her the situation and that I would like to order something else. The server looked at me as if I had asked for a squirrel and said " I'll be right back." Well, she did not come back, but the manager came instead. He told me without asking me what the problem was that " there is nothing wrong with the burger." that it was his first compliant ever on it. "it's Purdue which is the best!" personally I think Purdue is about the bottom of the barrel not to mention one of the cheapest poultry products out. He then says the best he can do is to take 10% off the T-burger. Mean while I haven't even said a word yet. I respectfully said "no thank you just take it off the check. " 10% off is the best I can do, I hear once again. I paid the check and left, but will never return. To lose a customer over an $8-$12 Turkey burger seems foolish on their part, but so be it. Like I had said earlier the service was terrible and overall unwelcoming. Good bye and good luck to Irving's. Don't cut too many corners, other people may notice eventually. If you are looking for a good deli look elsewhere. This place is a mess in all departments I'm sorry to say.....

this was my first time there was very excited to eat there because i love jewish deli food. after reading several of the other comments ojn this board, i realized it was not just me, or the day, it happens all the ime, reaffirming my feeling that i will not go back there again. 1. service was really bad, slow not once but 4 x i had to wave down a waitress the food was like old, like it was no way fresh the prices were not very good either i hope they shut down

I am redoing my review of this place. I do not know what happened but everything has changed. They used to give you a sample of pastrami but they did not. When I got my pastrami sandwich it was way smaller then before, cut way to thin, and was not as good, also it was the same price as before. My fiancee got a Cesar wrap(which she used to love getting there) and it was horrible. I am not happy to write this but I would actually not suggest this place anymore.

I liked Irvings! I've been passing this on route 10 for a while but only recently tried them after shopping at the farmers market next door. During the week, they're running a special where a list of sandwiches are $5.99 and I tried the corned beef and also ordered matzo ball soup. Both were to go and were great. The ladies behind the counter are quick and take great care in putting together your order (ie separately wrapping container of mustard, the pickle, etc.). I went back again yesterday and just ordered the matzo ball soup and it was just as good the second time!

I live in Manhattan but make the pilgrimage to Irving's whenever I'm in the vicinity. Their pastrami sandwich is out of this world, hand cut (which is a big deal) and at least as good as Katz's. I keep meaning to try other items on the menu but the pastrami is so good that I cave every time. It comes with old style Brooklyn ambience with a staff that makes you feel like you're at Aunt Rosie's house. They'll also ship anywhere in the country - my friends in Massachusetts were very thankful...

Had a great time at the comedy night on 3-12-11! Great food, great service and the show was a lot of fun. It was a very busy sold out night but the staff made sure all were accommodated. Management even made time for a special meal choice. Highly recommended! Will go back!

This was a return trip to Irving's. Except for the matzo ball soup-which was very weak and pale- the food was excellent. The pastrami was fine and the chopped liver was delicious. Cole slaw and pickles are first rate, too. The atmosphere is "faux Lower East Side" (but cleaner) and parking is plenntiful. Unfortunately, for Irving's sake, the shopping center they're in is a dud and the signage for the deli is... is there any? I got the feeling that business is not as good as it could be. Not being from the area, I don't know what or where their competition is but I am certain there are several Kosher-style delis in Livingston. But if you're just interested in a good sandwich, you WILL find that at Irving's. Prices are pretty reasonable too.

My husband and I love IRVINGS...the service and food are excellent. This is better than any other deli in Northern NJ....The chicken soup is the best, and so is the Pastrami. You must try this place! And they always have coupons in the local mailers which is always helpful.
