Cool place with nice people. Popular for their Huaraches (large oval shape soft corn tortilla with beans covered in what you want. My favorite is the Huarache con Tinga. Gorditas are excellent as well as the Chilaquiles con Pollo. Best Horchata I've had in Omaha. They give you great chips and salsa to start with as a bonus.

Very good, authentic Mexican food. Huaraches are delicious, and I especially enjoy the al pastor tacos. Good chips and salsa. Clean and friendly. No booze, though. I'll definitely be returning for my taco fix.

If you're a fan a huaraches, you definitely should check out La Cabana d' Franko. The interior is kitschy, with cabana-like booths complete with fake ocean views (and one with a Diego Rivera poster -- that booth is good luck!). Both times I've been here for late lunch/early dinner, the place has been nearly empty. Still the sever has been really nice, starting the meal off right with complimentary chips and salsa. I haven't really strayed from the huaraches here, which are definitely their specialty (e.g., they encompass the first few items on the menu). A plain huarache is about the size of an entire plate. It's a thick, football-shaped tortilla stuffed with black beans and topped with more beans, cheese and salsa. For $3.50, it'll fill you up. For a little, more, La Cabana d' Franko offers huaraches with a variety of toppings -- carne asada, chorizo and potatoes, etc. According to an old newspaper article framed on the wall inside the restaurant, La Cabana d' Franko's owner/chef is originally from Mexico City and wanted to bring a few flavors from his hometown to Omaha. I'm good with that. Looking forward to returning and trying something else, i.e. a torta.

Got the combination fajita plate. Was pretty tasty. Server was inattentive and left me without a refill on my drink for more than 20 minutes. Took her til I finished my meal to notice that my husband had not touched his quesadilla that had been cut open to place unnecessary garnish of sour cream and lettuce.

I recently visited my family in South Omaha and we were starving after a celebration mass near OLG on "O" Street. We walked 1 block towards 24th Street and we see a bunch of taquerias, helados and corner stands. We cross the street North going along the 4800's and we run across this brightly colored restaurant front called La Cabana d' Franko. We walk in and ask to see a menu. The prices were well above what we are used to back in Chicago but we see it's lonely and there are nice cabana style booths to sit down in. We quickly decide to order. I had a pambazo. It is chorizo susage, onion, lettuce, tomato and beans on a tomato sauce smothered giant bun. It reminded me of mild enchilada sauce. That was 6.99 each! I drank a mango smoothie that was so flavorful and refreshing on that warm balmy Saturday. That really hit the spot. It was 4.99! Others ordered the guarache with shredded chicken and cheese and jamaica juice. Jamaica juice or tea tastes a lot like polmegranite juice. Some had a homemade horchata and a flauta dinner with rice and beans. My cousins and I loved our food, but unfortunately we felt we were overcharged by 30% percent. WE always leave a tip! Maybe the owner thought we didnt leave one, but we will just take it to go next time. I give it 3 stars for good food and ambience (look for the black and white murals and the Aztec Princess behind the counter) but too pricey for the pocket. Oh,.. it also had a play area for the toddlers with toys, that was a great idea. If it wasnt for that, the Mom's wouldnt have eaten:)!

My husbands favorite place for Mexican food in South Omaha. If you are looking for traditional Mexican food this is NOT the place. They specialize in regional dishes. It was good but not my favorite. Good thing I love my husband.

Nothing fancy, just good, authentic Mexican food. Great tacos al pastor are available off the spit in the evenings and Sunday afternoon. The chilaquiles con huevos make for a tasty breakfast and while I don't really care for mole, the wife adores their chicken mole and gets it every time we go. The horchatas are fantastic.

Finally, 4 years and 6 months later I'm finally be getting around to writing the 'more detailed review' I foresaw back in 2009. Thanks to previous reviews, I had to try a huarache. While I wasn't a fan before, I'd say I was slightly converted. Overall, a little too dry for my liking (somehow), but once it was adequately salsa'ed up we were good to go. A nice large glass of horchata washed things down nicely. From there, I moved on to tacos - or actually, - taco. While other restaurants in the area might offer a larger variety, Cabana keeps it simple with three types. One of which is simply listed as 'Especial'. I really owe Chris for asking what was on it, because otherwise I might forget that I'd been to Cabana all over again. Except for the service. That was special too. But back to the taco... sauteed onions, chunks of bacon and melted white cheese all contained in a griddled flour tortilla and served with avocado salsa. Yes! Yes! Yes! I'll be back for you, Especial.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
