If I were reviewing Johnny's Cafe as a restaurant, it would get three stars - maybe 2. I went there for lunch, and had braised oxtails, which came in a slick, thickened, tomatoey sauce with boiled potatoes that were just slightly hard, and a salad that was old-fashioned. But that all sounds harsh, and it's not fair to be harsh to a place that delivers the exact experience I can recall from my days as a child in the 60s. Updating this place would be like colorizing a film. It's better if you accept it for what it is rather than expecting something it isn't. If the sauce were a wonderful reduction of pan juices with cabernet, it wouldn't be Johnny's. The food might be more to my current tastes, but it would not be authentic. Go to Johnny's and love it for what it is.

Yes - old school, but my ribeye was OK; not worth a second time. Loads of salt and butter; a good cut of beef does not need to be covered with salt; there is salt on the table, let me salt my meal, you cook it!

Just correcting they do cater, both on site and off. Not my kind of place, FAR too expensive, so I'll not go johnnyscafe.com/OffSiteC…

You walk into the place and you're greeted by a real old school atrium after you open the "door". The server stuck me in the corner.. what else is new lol.. requested another seat. The server was helpful letting me have a taste of the wine before ordering. Lots of nice steak choices.. I ordered the rib eye which is the chefs choice on the menu. It was AVERAGE. The bourbon mushroom sauce made the difference, unfortunately. My thought is that the food can be a lot better then it is, but the people who come here aren't going to pay much more money for the food here. I hear people complaining about the taxes in Omaha and the difficulties of the city which has a domino effect in the restaurant industry. Johnnys can't charge more money for better quality food... You get a plain round roll and told that the cottage cheese spread is a nice companion to the lance crackers. The rib eye steak was average and on the fatty side. It does have a nice family steakhouse feel to it... I guess I'm used to east coast steak houses like the grand ones in and around the NYC metro area... still I think they can do a much better job here. The last time I was in Omaha I went to an immaculate steak place.. This place has more history and can beat the pants off of any place if they tried harder.. 3 stars. I agree with the rating.

One of last great old school steakhouses in Omaha - love the decor and the staff is very friendly. Went here the other night with a group of 8 and heard no complaints. Everything from the prime rib to the filet mignon were all great. The sides are nothing earth shattering but this is old school! Note: If you want a vegetarian meal going to a steakhouse probably isn't the best idea. Just a tip

Hmm - not that many weeknight customers, but that is to be expected in a restaurant like this one. Overall, I'd say "good experience for an out-of-towner", but probably would say that the steak was the best part of the meal - they missed some opportunities along the way for sure! The front door to this place is magnificent. Wonderful iron door with cool old school cattle metal sculpture. As others have said, you walk into a nice domed foyer - it is a bit campy, but still - expected in a steak house. I was seated in the main dining room next to a huge beam - I guess because it was a table set for two (I was eating along as I am on a business trip). I suppose I could have sat somewhere else where I wouldn't feel a bit crowded - but I decided to roll with it. The dining room decoration is a bit cheesy - but it's ok for an "attraction" steak house. Now for the food... I ordered the Ribeye with a bleu cheese salad and a loaded twice-baked potato and (since it was Tuesday), a "James Bond" martini for ($4 on Tuesdays). My drink came in about 5 minutes. It was nice! Never had a James Bond martini before - not too bad... a bit stiff of an adult beverage for a weeknight. :) One minute later, the signature gimmick appetizer - the cottage cheese & chive spread. Probably would have come across much better had the bread been fresh or the crackers that are served with it were unwrapped and presented nicely. In any case, I did enjoy the cheese spread - it was a nice touch. Next (about 10 minutes later), my salad came out in a small dish with bleu cheese smothered on top. Wow. This was a good cold, crisp salad and the blue cheese was amazing. Seems you can only get dressing like this in a restaurant. And all too often do I find a midweek restaurant salad is not appetizing. This one was excellent. About 10 minutes after that, my steak came out - and it was a purdy thing! Yes, it was beautiful, flame-broiled, cooked perfectly, and rested perfectly. It was a sight! But... my potato looked like it had been either in a 500 degree oven for 3 hrs or just nuked. It was hot as a pistol and not very "loaded"... and quite small. I think the potato had a lot of room for improvement. The dish was garnished with what appeared to be two cold onion rings (from lunch?). If I may offer the tweaks that would have made this a perfect dinner? - The flatware, plates and water glasses literally look like they came from Denny's. If I'm going to eat great food, please can we do it with quality utensils? - Simple food details make a big difference! Fresh, warm bread (not old, stale bread). Butter that isn't individually wrapped. Crackers that didn't come from Sysco. Larger potatoes from Idaho. Twice-baked should have more ingredients. Onion rings that are battered and fried just before serving, not leftover from lunch. The signature cottage cheese spread... how do you spread your dips? Is it with a chowder spoon? I would suggest a small butter knife at the very least. Well, for a tourist trap - it was certainly a good meal. For locals, I'm certain they demand better. Overall? 3 stars. If I could rate just the steak, I'd give it 5. Good luck Johnny's!

After Angie's closed down, we found ourselves looking for a new lunchtime place and we tried Johnny's. One of my better decisions in the last number of years. While they advertise the luncheon steak as just that, you swear it was a filet. It is served with the best mushroom gravy in town and you get a full meal with all the sides. Everyone agrees that it is a great place for lunch, and it has been around for over 90 years and that is saying something. Even as a small child, we would get to pick where we wanted to eat for our birthday and I always chose this place, back in the 60's and again this year. The cottage cheese topping for your rolls or crackers is great too, a bit on the simple side but well worth having as an excellent compliment to an already good meal. My last visit my wife ordered fried chicken (no explanation for that one, although she said it was excellent) and it takes a while to cook chicken so they slow cooked all of our steaks and it was simply a picture perfect looking and exceptionally tasty steak, one of the top 10 I have ever had. As I have stated in several other reviews, Omaha needs to support the original and time tested family owned restaurants before they also become just a fond memory like Angie's and other past Omaha steak house's and Johnny's deserves to be the popular dining experience that it truly is.

After first moving to Omaha, this was one of the first places that we went to in search of a "classic" Omaha steak house. Overall, it's a pretty good place to eat, but wouldn't land on my pantheon of places to get a steak. So as far as locations go, this is kind of off the beaten path and you may have to turn as though you were getting back on the freeway to get here. It's not hard to figure out, but I know that I had a moment where I thought that I was going the wrong way. As others have suggested, the atmosphere is "old school," which is either dated or authentic depending on your view of things. I found it charming. You enter through heavy metal doors (that would probably withstand a bomb-blast) and enter into a place that probably hasn't been updated since Sinatra was touring. In the menu, they mention that they filmed part of "About Schmidt" here. I haven't seen that movie in years, but I'm betting part of the reason they used it as a location is Johnny's "timeless" (or "out-of-step") quality. Either way you look at it, it's hard to say that it isn't memorable and probably in keeping with the East and West Coast's stereotypical view of Omaha and the Mid-west. Every time that I have been there, the servers have been very attentive, but the place has never been very crowded (calling it empty would be be fairly appropriate). They inquire on you frequently and offer menu suggestions. I kind of felt like my mom (well, someone's mom) was waiting on me. Again, I found it charming. As far as the food goes, every table get the house-made cream cheese and chive spread with bread, which is tasty, but not outstanding. I have gotten the french onion soup on multiple occasions and would highly recommend it. I have tried several of their steaks. For me, I tend to compare steakhouses based on the filets. Johnny's filets are cooked to the level that you order and they are flavorful and tender. However, they lack the aged and butter quality that I have found at my favorite steakhouses. The prices aren't bad and a night out here won't break your budget like some of the best places that I have been to. Still, a meal for two tends to set me back over $60 (including drinks). I felt that the price was about right. So to sum it up, I go to Johnny's because the food is good and also because I like the atmosphere - it's what I thought Omaha was (before living here for a while) and not what Omaha actually is today.

One of the better steaks I have had. It was cooked to Medium Rare as requested, melted in my mouth, and flavourful. The complimentary appetizer dip was delicious and the service was very good. As many others have said this is an old school Omaha steak house, and well worth the trip for a good steak at a decent price.

Absolutely revolting. I've been here five times in as many years. Today was the last. A typical meal at Johnny's will be cold or room temperature at best. The "hot" beef sandwich I ordered looked like something that could have been served during the Great Depression: dry, shriveled slices of what was purported to be beef, entangled in sinewy mess of fat and food service brown gravy slapped onto a piece of stale white bread. A dollop of cold mashed potatoes swam pathetically off to the side. Served along with this catastrophe was a dish of pasta salad which contained enough vinegar to strip paint. The restaurant attempts to remind us of a time when real stockyard workers did real stockyard work with real livestock. The walls are adorned with aww-shuckery baubles and old photographs of bygone days. Johnny's effortlessly pushes us to our limit of tawdry midwest octogenarian kitsch. This place is from 1922, after all. For some, this is an institution. Other reviewers have called it a classic. My contribution is to say that a visit to Johnny's is an unforgettable experience, if not unforgivable.

Steak: amazing. Staff: great. Drinks: average. Side dishes: skip them and eat more steak.

Steak was pretty immaculate, but i can't say it's the best. This above average, not best, steak was accompanied by boring cottage cheese with packaged Keibler crackers and regular bland white bread roll. Service was less than average. The accompanying steak whiskey mushroom sauce was really tasty though. Bon Appetit...winning the hearts of food lovers one tummy at a time!

My wife and I loved this place. This is your steak splurge place par excellence.Dark old fashioned looking, good service, great steak.I make vegetarian dishes my self so I don't object to that but you don't go to a place like this if you are a vegetarian .No offense but that is silly. Finally you CAN'T do what they do at home , you don't have the oven and you can't get the meat.

The one and only time I have gone here was with one of the Kawa's family members nearly ten years ago. This place is known for its steaks, and it certainly should be, as it has absolutely no vegetarian option (not even a measly dinner salad). If you are a vegetarian, do not go here... just don't waste your time...PERIOD. A quick glance at their menu reveals that they still do not have even one vegetarian option. Most places these days at least offer a vegetarian salad, and I certainly don't mind going out with friends to steak houses since most of them have at least a salad with no meat on it. This one does not. So, unless you enjoy making a meal out of dinner rolls, or if you wish to pay $10 for a stripped down salad, have your friends choose another place if they want steaks.

My husband and I came here on recommendation from my uncle. Food was ok at best (luckily company was good). Salad was something they poured out of a bag (my uncle did send a message to management about this). My filet mignon was thin and frankly, was not that good. My husband ordered a tenderloin? or something that was decent. Dessert was OK, but looked more like some bad oatmeal thing with ice cream on it. Decor was outdated. Overall, the experience was alright but don't come here expecting to experience steak at its best. It just isn't - at least right now. If I were the management, they need to review their menu and preparation and make some serious adjustments. And for god's sake, invest in a updating the interior. It doesn't need to look like a modern venue but a few touch ups couldn't hurt.

We ate here last week for my birthday. Big mistake! The decor is in a bad70's time warp. Salad was bagged iceberg with bottled dressing. The best thing I had was the soup, and it was only average. Our strip steaks were bland. My side was suppose to be au gratin potatoes. I got undercooked potato cubes with strange orange sauce. Our server was abrupt to the point of rudeness. We will not go back!

    (1)
  • Bill D.

The steaks were chewy, the salad was brown around the edges, and the potatoes had been put on the plate with a scoop. Our dinner of steaks and martini's was awful. $110 wasted .

This is the steakhouse that ruined steak for me forever. We were on a cross-country road trip from LA to Boston, and we had to stop for steak in Omaha. Once you've tasted Omaha grain-fed Hereford Prime steak, there's not many places left to go. Longhorn Steakhouse? Texas Roadhouse? All purveyors of tasteless rubber. I just order chicken fried steak, because nothing else they offer can satisfy me. I've even tried ordering from Omaha Steaks, and it doesn't even come close. Okay, rant over. This was hands down the best ribeye (let's face it, best MEAT) I have tasted, ever. I love how they use a minimal marinade of olive oil, salt and pepper to let the flavor of the seared meat just come out. I found myself cutting my last pieces of steak smaller and smaller because I just didn't want to run out of it. You really should eat at this establishment. It's kind of touristy, and it's got some of the cheesiest decorations you've ever seen, with cow leather, saddles and stirrups everywhere. A real experience. Did I mention that this place tops my list of last meals if I ever end up on death row?

I was kind of conflicted after leaving here. I wasn't sure if it was good or not. Everything was ok... But just a little off. This was the first time I had ever been there. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because I didn't have a steak. A steak would make or break my opinion of this place. The appetizer we got was pretty good. It was krab stuffed mushrooms. The havarti cheese is what made it tasty. For the entree I ordered the Sweet Breads. Having never tried them before I was really excited. I'm not sure if it is the way they are supposed to taste or if it was the seasoning on them, but they just kind of tasted funny. My girlfirend had the catfish and it tasted really fishy (muddier than usual) and had the same funny tasting seasoning on it. The chocolate crisp for dessert was alright but just a little stiff. Other than that I would rate it as average. It might have just been our choices, but it didn't seem too out of the ordinary. Entrees are around $15+++ and with app and dessert it ran us around $65.

What a spot for classic Omaha charm. It took us four years of going to Warren's meeting to finally find Johnnys. We filled up a private room with 20 or so people and it was much classier than expected. Really helpful, attentive and humorous staff despite the fact that I accidentially slide-tackled one of them just as I was sitting down. The classic filet with steamed veggies was definitely a bite out of Warrens world. We did onion rings, mushroom crab caps, Pinot and a side of freshly made creamed horse radish. These guys do it all! What a way to arrive in Omaha! Will definitely be back.

The decor is definately old-school, but get past it. The steak was one of the best I've ever had and the onion rings were definately the best I've ever had. I never got to one of the "prime" steakhouses in Omaha, my expense allowance wouldn't cover it. If you're looking for a moderately priced steak, you can't go wrong with Johnny's Cafe.

Another old school cool steak house for omaha. Acutally I really just love this place. Johnnys is a steak house nex to the old stock yards so if your a vegetarian dont down rate this place. If you go to disney land do you complain cause theres too many kids. WTF. That is simply ridiculous. Cool bar, cool decor. I think a must visit for big fat juicy steak and cool atmosphere.

Had the prime rib, not what I would expect from a classic Omaha steakhouse. The prime rib was somewhat tough, not too fatty though. The salad was not spectacular, and the side of potatoes augratin was disappointing, along with the bread that tasted a day old and was worse than some of the worst bread found in a supermarket bakery. I wish I had better things to say, but I don't. The atmosphere was unique as most Omaha steakhouse, with the red decor and the lighting fixtures out of the 50's or 60's. Stop in if you haven't tried it, but don't expect much.

Johnny's Cafe is regarded as a fixture in Omaha. It's been serving steaks in the former Stockyards district since 1922. (Two interpretive characters at the Durham Museum agree they will meet at Johnny's after the War.) Well, we had to check this out! Johnny's has been remodeled since opening, but it retains a1960s retro atmosphere and decor. Red leatherette chairs and banquettes with dim lighting and all that. In the waiting area is a display of menus going back in time. (The same steak dinner I ordered was available in the 1950s.) I ordered the Native Filet Mignon. It was a very nice 9 oz portion, tender and lean. However, here was something curious. It did not have a great deal of intrinsic flavor. Instead, the waiter brought Johnny's house steak sauce. (He also asked if another steak sauce was preferred.) Usually, a steakhouse would take offense at a guest wanting to add a steak sauce! Perhaps that is a traditional way of eating a steak in Omaha. You expect to add sauce for flavor. The Filet Mignon was accompanied by a baked potato and onion rings. My wife ordered Fried Shrimp, but found them average. The dinners also included a House Salad. We had a surprise at this restaurant. Because it was the first Saturday of the month, the waiter brought a Foie Gras appetizer for the table to go with the bread. I take it Johnny's serves something different like that each weekend. I'm glad I tried Johnny's, but it was not the best steak I have had. I'd like to try other Omaha steakhouses next time.

Had dinner tonight 3/23/15 at Johnny's. Absolutely the best in service and food. The prime rib was off the chart and my favorite; the chicken fried steak was outstanding. Your missing the dinner of your life if you don't try it! JAC

This place has some charm to it, although you may feel that you stepped into a past decade. We stopped here for some drinks with friends and left wanting to come back and try the place for dinner. The place may look a bit dated, but it should since it's been around for quite awhile. The service we had was great. We stopped in not realizing that they closed in an hour and they were happy to serve us. We'll be back to check out the dinner menu soon!

The staff was amazing, but the food was a big disappointment. I can't believe it, but I found out they serve instant mashed potatoes.. So i ordered baked potatoes and it has obviously been cooked in the microwave. The steak I got (for $25) was about 1/3 fat that they didn't even bother to cut off. The place is pretty clean. Not worth visiting.

I love Johnny's Cafe because this restaurant represents history of cattlemen in Omaha, capital of highest quality corn fed beef in America. Johnny's Cafe is located in the historic Omaha Stockyard and operated by the same family continuously from 1920s. Cattlemen would have gathered here for a meal and for drinks after his livestock sale. (Beef, pork and sheep was sold from the stockyard) I have been to Johnny's Cafe more than a dozen times and my favorite is their braised beef short ribs with a side of Johnny's salad. Beef is slowly cooked and melts in your mouth. Make sure to ask for the barbeque sauce on the side if you order the short ribs.

If you are looking for an Omaha steak, this is the place to go. This place has incredible food, incredible service, and has an amazing atmosphere. For all the food and drinks we got, it was fairly reasonable price wise. We will definitely be going back. Also, make sure to try the cottage cheese! It's incredible!

An Omaha classic that stands the test of time; from the old school of family owned steak houses. I had the Omaha strip and my daughter had the prime rib; perfect meat that was expertly cooked. I always get the hash browns as they are browned just right. The interior is the same from the big remodel in the 70s. The front doors are an Omaha icon; heavy metal with steers as the handles. And, of course, Creighton Prep alum Alexander Payne filmed a scene from "About Schmidt" in the dining room. Payne has the eye for the detail. The right choice. There was a big birthday party for an 83 year old woman the night we were there. Rowdy. The average age of the crowd that night was at least 65. Younger people need to figure out this is a great Omaha institution and patronize this place. No arugula. Real and authentic Nebraska food.

It's not bad -- if you want an authentic old-school steak house experience it'll hit the spot. Just go in with low expectations and you'll be fine. The real deal, though, is the lounge. I don't know of any other bar in Omaha that has saddles for seating. Worth a trip just for that.

Was recommended to me went to for dinner , my prime rib was average at the most. Sides were okay but there steak sauce was horrible. $53 later I expected a lot more of the "world famous Omaha steaks " winner

I'm surprised that this place didn't get better ratings. My friend heard a recommendation for this place so we decided to have lunch here right before heading to the zoo. There was already a small group of people waiting before opening. Even so, we were quickly seated upon entering. Their menu is fairly simple with different daily lunch specials, which was what I ordered, philly cheese steak sandwich, soup of the day, mashed potatoes, and a beverage all for $6.99! Everything was tasty and not overly greasy as philly cheese steaks can be drenched in oil. There was a large group of cute elderly women all wearing red hats. I asked the waitress about them and I was curious about these women. The waitress actually introduced me to them! I was even able to take a couple of pictures with these women. Needless to say, the service was great from the moment I stepped inside to getting an introduction to leaving the facility. I must admit that my friend and I were probably the youngest patrons in the restaurant. They seem to attract older folks, most who are regulars. The location seems to be in the industrial area of Omaha, at least from an outsider's point of view.

Ever see those ads or a store at a strip mall for "Omaha Steaks"? I did. In fact, I've seen it many times but I have yet to try. Since I was in Omaha for business, instead of trying a packaged and commercialized meat, I thought I would try the real deal. I was searching for best steak house in Omaha when I got a comment from my fellow Yelper to try Johnny's Cafe. He also talked it up about it being in the movie "About Schmidt" and how it was the classic and original steak house with just fantastic food. Some of the best steaks I had were in an old classic steak house so I lit up like a Christmas tree getting this recommendation. I looked it up again and this place got a lot of accolades as well. It intrigued me also the fact it had been in business for almost a hundred years! When we arrived, as soon as we opened the car door, we smelled cow and its glory, the dung. I came to learn that it is located by the stockyard. I actually appreciated the smell and it took me to the cattle man and ranching and how we got to enjoy steaks as how it is today. We also learned it was in da hood side of town. Yikes. Luckily, we didn't get killed. The place was really old. You will see the faded faćade on the outside, termite eaten woods on the siding, but Johnny's Cafe name still looked bold mounted up there. By the door, we saw all these badges naming them best steak year after year after year. It gave me hope as if you judged the book by its cover, you would have turned around and go somewhere else. It did look run down from the outside. However, I was brave. The circular lobby was pretty cool. It had to be quite grand at one time. It looked pretty massive now too and the door with metal working of cattles was quite intricate. You smelled the age of the place as soon as you walked in. That musty smell wasn't the best but the place has been here since 1922 for Pete's sake. The dining room had some "antique" furniture. They looked soooo old but once you got to the dining room, it looked and smelled a lot better. We were greeted right away and were given menu along with breads and some cottage cheese spread as well as crackers. Looking at the menu, prices were cheap! Mostly in the twenties. If you go to the modern steak houses, $20 will get you an appetizer. Even crazier, we saw on the menu that there was a dinner for two for $54! At first, I thought it was per pax. However..no! It was for the whole thing! We thought we wouldn't even blow up our per diem expense? Could it be? We went for the dinner deal as it was too good to pass up. We got everything from appetizer to dessert! The spinach dip came and it was classic and delicious. We almost finished the whole thing forgetting we would have steak coming. Then, salad came and it looked fine. I ordered the split pea soup instead of salad. The soup was delicious that I wanted some to go. Yummy! Now, we got real excited about the steak. My friend and coworker ordered the rib eye that looked mighty good. I ordered the Omaha strip. My strip steak was cooked perfectly and it had some tooth feel to it, not tender like a filet but it definitely wasn't tough. It had a really good taste to it with perfect charred marks. My friend said hers was super good she got quiet and ignored me as she was busy enjoying it. Her side of hash brown also looked so good and tasted good. We devoured our steaks. After we were done, I regretted going for the dinner deal as our steak was in the small side for being a packaged deal. I will come back and go for the real cut next time and focused on the steak. It was definitely enough steak, however I want to try the thick cut specialty steaks and savor that red meat bliss even more. Then dessert came. We chose Bread Pudding with Bourbon sauce and it was a great way to close. It was nice and comforting. I reported back to my friend who gave me the recommendation that it was a thumb's up. He said..phew! Hahaha.. There's always a pressure to recommend a place hoping it would be as expected. However, it was awesome when it was! I certainly was happy. This one is definitely "don't judge a book by its cover" type place. Pay your homage and respect to a restaurant that withstands the wrath of time from generation to generation. Looking at the collage on the wall for each decade was really putting things to perspective. Then, you felt nothing but admiration that someone's great great great great grandfather started this joint and it is here still.

Best Prime Rib and French onion soup I've ever had. Ask for the pan fried pierogis even though the are not on the menu. Food, drink, and service (especially waitress Jamie) were great. The atmosphere reminds me of great restaurants from the 70's...but that said, it is well kept up and does not look old. When in Omaha, Johnny's Cafe is a must to eat at. Oh...one more thing, the liver pate served on the first weekend of the month is terrific.

Omaha Steaks...my co-workers and I were craving a good steak and Marcus told us about Johnny's. The history of this restaurant is amazing, how it's been around for decades serving up some fine steak found locally here in Nebraska. The three of us decided to partake in the enjoyment of their steaks for lunch on one of our weekdays off. It was very exciting since this was our first lunch co-worker date ever and enjoying a good steak, well that's a win in my book! As soon as we walked in it was as if we stepped back in time. A few of the reviews stated that it should be updated, but I think that's what creates the charm of the restaurant. It's roots, how it started, and how it's still standing, it's clear that the decor holds nothing against its regulars and the quality of the food. We all had the luncheon steak as our choice of meat. I chose the hashbrowns as my side, my friend Joan had the corn, and Marcus had the boiled potatoes. The steak came with a mushroom sauce and the hashbrown was on a separate plate and there were lots of it. The piece itself was about 7oz but looked rather small, I ordered mine medium well and it tasted fine enough. Perhaps I will try medium rare next time I stop by. Marcus' boiled potatoes looked much more healthy than my hashbrowns but I still enjoyed them nonetheless. For dessert the three us shared a sundae. It was a nice sweet treat to top off our steak lunch. Service here was a bit slow, we arrived towards the end of the lunch crowd and there were a few tables that had yet to be cleaned off. The only waiter that was taking orders and bussing tables was our waiter. It took awhile for us to get our orders in and we waited patiently for our entrees. By the time we got our meals the lunch turned out wonderfully. We had so much fun chatting and our waters were filled in a timely manner as well. Overall, I enjoyed my meal very much. I would probably suggest having at least another server during lunch to help out with the rush.

Having lived in Las Vegas for 15yrs, I had the opportunity to eat at some of the finest steak restaurants around...And since moving here 3yrs ago, I was anxious to see how a steak from an equally great restaurant would be here in Omaha...well, as of today I've had the single greatest steak in my life...came here with a friend for my birthday, got the 9oz filet mignon with a baked potato...the server, who's name I wish I'd gotten, was great...She was friendly, quick and had an excellent sense of humor...I got my steak medium, and it was cooked perfectly...never have I had a more tender piece of steak...for dessert I got the Oreo cheesecake...also very tasty...yes, Johnny's isn't in what anyone would consider a good part of town, especially at night...but it's worth braving the sketchy location to come to an establishment as excellent as this...save your pennies, collect some cans, roll a bum or two and experience what a great piece of meat is all about...

Very nice place with a great bar area! We always get the same thing here because it is so good, and that is the Beef Filet with the Demi Glaze. The beef is so tender and flavorful, we keep having to get each and every time. Don't feel like you have to dress fancy to go here, nice casual clothes are fine, a very enjoyable place to dine!

Old school steak house for sure. Wonderful steaks, charred to perfection. They have their own Italian house dressing and of course the salad comes with anchovies. The wait staff is very attentive and service was quick. We will definitely go back many times.

After trying Johnny's last night, I am seriously baffled over how anyone can give this restaurant high marks without embellishing. For starters, the restaurant is dark (not romantic dark but creepy dark) and dingy "looking" which in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing. However, both combined gave the impression of uncleanliness and I found myself overly inspecting everything to ensure the darkness wasn't a cover-up for filth or worse. I get it! Johnny is a piece of Omaha history which I'm all for preserving, but is sprucing up the place too much to ask? I can only imagine how the kitchen and prep area looks. Is it just as old and outdated? Needless to say, I couldn't relax the entire night. The menu offers a nice selection of appetizers, salads, seafood, cocktails, and steaks. The problem is the taste! I ordered a Berry Kiss martini that was void of ANY flavor. The crab cakes were a piping hot mess! The salad was a bowl of lettuce with one......yes one tomatoe and one banana pepper. The stuffed mushrooms were odd tasting to me but decent enough for my wife to enjoy. The steaks were very well prepared but offered no wow factor. The entire experience was underwhelming. There were several highlights to include the hostess, waitress, and french fries! Despite the highlights I don't see us ever returning considering we have to pass a Texas Roundhouse to get there.

Look, I'm not stupid. It's the Big Man's wife. I'm gonna sit across from her, chew my food with my mouth closed, laugh at her f****ing jokes, and that's it. The moment I stepped in, I thought I was in a Quentin Tarantino movie. The carvings in the main door, the red leather swivel chairs with wheels and the fantastic 70's classic rock music in the background are just the icing on the cake. The hostess was very pleasent and showed us around the restaurant, including he room where About Schmidt was filmed. They also have a wall with their menus from 1922 till today. Apparently, a T-bone would have set you back a buck fifty back in the 50's!!! Having said that, the food was excellent. Do try their French onion soup and true to their claim, the Omaha strip was very tender and more flavorful than a NY or KC strip. Good all around and a must try when in Omaha!

My absolute favorite steak house in Omaha, and in a cowtown like this, that's saying something. It's been there for nearly 100 years, located conveniently near the old stockyards. The rib-eye steaks are always tender, juicy, and can be cut with a fork. I always get the gigantic hand-breaded onion rings on the side along with the au gratin potatoes. It's got a lot of old-school charm that makes for a perfect night out without being too pretentious (or breaking the bank). It holds its own with Caniglia's Venice Inn, Gorat's, or Piccolo's, and is my favorite of the bunch.

    F. Yes. This is as "steakhouse" as it gets. Its near the old stockyards so if you listen quietly you can hear the delicious screams of a 1,000 slaughtered cows being brought to your table. Its windowless, covered in oak and leather. In its yesteryear you can imagine everyone smoking cigars at the bar, drinking brandy, and eating steak (all physician recommended in 1951). The omaha strip is award winningly good. The potatoes actually stop the flow of blood to your brain so you stop thinking about anything but meat and potatoes. The floor is slanted, they have horns for door handles, there is more deep reds and polished brass than daylight - and you will love it.

I was in Omaha for a thing, and was pointed to Johnny's Cafe by a family member. I was looking for a good steak that I didn't have to get dressed up to eat. Upon entering through the huge front inner door, I briefly wondered about my attire, but was soon put at ease by another couple of non-dressy folks. This place looks far more expensive than it is. Johnny's has also been open for longer than any other steakhouse in Omaha--since the 1920s, I believe. That kind of longevity speaks to quality in some way. I ordered a ribeye, rare (I still wonder why any other option is even available), and enjoyed my Coke while eagerly awaiting its arrival. This reviewer does not eat salads and the like, and is finicky about even bread. Brought to me, was a bowl of cottage cheese dip, which they speak highly of, and a bowl of assorted crackers. I did not indulge, but it is worth mentioning that it does exist. My lack of consuming it has more to do with who I am than what it was. I was also presented with a roll, which was wonderful. I like that real butter packets were in a little dish on my table. Fake butter is an affront to humanity, and I hate having to ask about it, or worse, being given the fake stuff under false pretenses. Note to all restauranteurs--I CAN tell the difference. My steak arrived soon after. Service here was quick! Upon removing the wooden stick that proudly proclaimed "RARE," I cut in, and was rewarded with a nice, deep red color. The steak was not the best I have had, but was a fine meal regardless. When in Omaha, I may well make this a regular stop. My baked potato was absolutely adequate, but of note was the giant pile of bacon that was brought out with it. I like my potato with butter and bacon, and occasionally chives, and generally potatoes are either butter only or loaded. I ordered bacon for my potato, and was very much rewarded! In summary, Johnny's is a fancy-looking, but unpretentious steakhouse. You will get very good food at a very reasonable price. In fact, I believe I escaped at a price I would more expect to see at a chain restaurant, but having had a much better meal. Would I recommend? Yes, and enthusiastically so. Will I return? Definitely.

First time going here for my wife's birthday. I get the place is very old, but I just wasn't feeling the inside. Was missing something and seemed very outdated. Maybe nice relaxing music? Not sure, but didn't like it. We got a group-on for $80. Make sure you read the fine print and don't order any specials! Our waitress told us after I presented it to her to pay our bill. So she kind of helped us, but we ended up losing $10 extra with how she charged us. That made us pretty upset. Salads were the ones you buy at the store in a bag. That confirmed a 3 star for me. Our bill was huge and last thing I want, is a bag of salad they bought at the grocery store for $3.00 that serves 4 people and they charged me pretty high. The steak however, was great! Full of flavor, didn't need any sauce, and was cooked perfect. My wife is pretty picky with her steak and she loved hers as well. We figured if your going to pay that much at this place, just go for the steak and you won't be disappointed.

Hello hard-to-get-to historic Omaha steakhouse. Why yes, the front doors are the most amazing entryway to a restaurant I think I've seen in recent memory. This and other 'old school' Omaha steakhouses (Piccolo's, Anthony's, Gorat's, etc) need a nickname. Something that encompasses the 70's decor, the loyal long-time patrons, the history and the general style of the food... like COSHes - Classic Omaha Steakhouses. Getting to the food, Johnny's like so many other COSHes, offers meat and potatoes fare. Pick a steak, pick a veggie, pick a potato type. Easy peasy. Bread on the side (with their staple cottage cheese spread. yum). You can even order scoops of Robert's Ice cream for dessert (super cute)... or other COSH staple menu items like peel and eat shrimp, onion rings, cheese garlic bread, and more. Food my grandparents love. Would it recommend it to someone? Probably not. Especially not someone visiting town... wouldn't want this to be a lasting impression of what Omaha has to offer when there are so many more interesting options, in my opinion. But the history of this place dates back to 1922. You can't tell me that doesn't mean they're doing something right... it's just not for me.

I went to Johnny's Cafe on 2 December with my Parents who came into town for Thanksgiving. They wanted to get a good steak and being new to town my-self my wife and I decided to try Johnny's Cafe after reading the website about how the restaurant was founded and is one of the original steak houses of Omaha. The first thing that we noticed about the restaurant is that the decor looked as if it hadn't been updated since the last remodel in the 70's, and that the carpet could probably use a steam cleaning or replacement. This didn't deter us since we usually eat at hole in the wall Asian restaurants anyways. Both couples ordered the dinner for two options. For appetizers we ordered cheesy garlic bread and the onion rings. The onion rings were good and the portion was generous and the waiter informed us that they just reduced the size in half, the cheesy garlic bread was standard Texas toast with mozzarella melted on top. The salads came out next, none of us were impressed the salad consisted of what seemed liked premixed ice-berg salad available from the grocery store. Than came the entrees, all of the steaks were delicious by far the best part of the meal and since this is the star attraction that we came for it lived up to our expectations. The sides were OK, nothing special, I had the mashed potatoes and i was disappointed they tasted like instant potatoes scooped with an ice cream scooper similar to a school lunch room. By the time desserts came we where full and got to-go boxes, overall the meal was good but for what I thought was going to be a quality steak house it left a lot to be desired. This restaurant seems like it is passed its prime and would be good served by a renovation and menu makeover.

Their steaks are absolutely amazing! I like how this place has a very upscale feeling to it yet it is very casual. You can find great food at a good price between 5:00 and 6:30. I personally enjoyed the sirloin steak but after trying the ribeye I found it to be just as good.

I hadn't been to Johnny's in probably 25 years. Last week, we celebrated my mom's b-day here. To understand the decor of this establishment, you have to understand the history of not only the restaurant, but also the neighborhood and Omaha. The stockades saw hundreds of thousands of cattle go through it over the decades and while time has changed the area, it's not really changed Johnny's. This also means it's off the beaten path now. I was kind of sad to see how few people were there on a Friday night, somehow they have to find a way to drive more traffic and establish a base with all the new people in Omaha, as many of their old customers are just that, old or have passed on. We had pretty good service, great food and a great time rehashing our lives and celebrating my mom's b-day. If you're swing through Omaha or been there all your life and never been, give it try!

Outstanding. This place has made my life complete. If I could dine here everyday, I would. The throwback motif, the stout cocktails, the incredible beef. Woohee this place is where it's at. Had reservations for 6 people on a Saturday, while we waited for our table we cozied up to the bar, and waited for some 'Goodfellas' to pick up our drinks....not really but seriously could have fooled me. The chairs and decor of the bar made me realize how awesome of place this was going to be. I had the petite filet medium rare and hashbrowns, I will DREAM of this steak it was soooooo good. The Bourbon Manhattan for $5.50 was incredible, and I can speak for eveyone at the table, that this place is a gem. Our silence while we savored every bite of the beefy goodness on our plates, was deafening. Especially since this was a group of seasoned Bachelorettes. Our server was akwardly attentive, and humored us while we drank our whisky, and ate our steaks- all we were missing were cigars. Stay classy Johnny's Cafe. I think of you often, and can't wait to be with you again. xoxoxox

DON"T DO IT!! We were roadtripping through Omaha and decided to find a nice steakhouse to eat at during our one night stay. You can't drive through Omaha without getting a steak, right? So, I searched all of the steakhouses on Yelp and after reading tons of mixed reviews and taking our travel budget into consideration, we chose Johnny's Cafe. HUGE MISTAKE! First off, I felt like I was in my grandmother's house... It was weird, dingy and musty. And it was completely empty! There were two ladys at one table and a 75+ year old couple at another. That should have been our first warning, but we continued to our table. We ordered the French Onion soup, which was absolutely delicious! But that turned out to be the only good thing there. The cottage cheese spread was gross and the salads were drenched in not-so-delicious dressing. We figured that maybe it wasn't a bad thing that their salads weren't so good afterall, this was a steakhouse not a saladhouse. Once our steaks arrived the first thing that I noticed was the melted cheese on the baked potatoes that looked like it had melted earlier that day then was thrown in the microwave to nuke. They were gnarly looking. At this point we were feeling a little nervous about how good this food was going to be, but again, we continued on. My wife took a bite of her steak and I could immediately tell she was not happy with it. It tasted like the cook had just finished cooking a giant, stinky piece of fish, took it off the grill and placed the filet right in the same spot. AND it was incredibly dry! Absolutely disgusting! My strip was extremely chewy and dry as well. As a result, when our server came around to ask how everything was, we asked for the check and got the hell out of there! We believed all the other reviews about how good this place was and let me tell you did we regret it. So, if you are even considering going there, don't do it! And if you do, don't say I didn't tell you so.

I gave Johnny's Cafe 5 stars because it is the best at what it is. It is the quintessential retro steakhouse with decor from the late 60's- to mid-70's. Once you are past that, the food is pure American Steakhouse. My daughter had the prime rib (rare!) and I had the petite filet mignon with hashbrowns(!). the side salad was iceberg, fresh, crisp, a little heavy on the dressing. Also available for a side was the loaded baked potato that looked amazing. On the list of our traveling standard stops from now on.

It''s not about the food. It's about swiveling in your mad men chair, staring at the hiiiiiiigh 70's decor, pretending to be your parents out on a hot date around the time of your conception. If someone took me here on a date I would definitely put out. This place is perfect.

Always love to visit the old traditional Omaha Steakhouses. However, Johnny's best days are behind them. Went on a Friday night. Had the Chicken Fried Steak. It tasted like dishwater. The bread pudding was rubbery and looked horrific. The service was slow. The salad was wilted. Very disappointing. Never be back. The restaurant has a distinct sewer, moldy smell. There are alot of new eateries in town. If Johnny's intends to stay open, they better get it together. Can't serve the same old below average food. Marie M

Twice, my husband and I have gone to Johnny's with their $50-for-$25 Groupons, and twice we have left thinking we wouldn't be going back without another Groupon. It's not because I am that cheap, it's because we don't feel the experience was worth the prices they charge. I feel like we could expect better for a $75-$100 meal for two (steak for 2, two drinks and maybe an appetizer). Let me first admit that the steaks there are amazing. The chateaubriand was wonderful, cooked to a perfect rare, perfectly-seasoned, and overall a wonderful cut of meat. Unfortunately, my praise for the food stops there. I thought the sides consistently paled in comparison to the entree. The bread is served refrigerator cold, hard, and tasteless. The liver pate was unremarkable, but wouldn't have garnered much favor as we're not liver fans. The chive cottage cheese spread was more aligned with our tastes, fortunate as the spread was necessary to cover up the breads lack of character. The alternative to the spread, rock-hard wrapped pats of butter straight from the refrigerator, are more manageable if you keep them close to the candle. I felt the house salad was bagged--some iceberg, a bit of romaine, some shreds of cabbage, two little baby carrots, and hit-or-miss tomatoes. The dressing was slopped on top and, while the house dressing tastes great, the bottom of my salad was swimming in it both times. I found their lack of presentation or care disappointing. On our first visit, we had the potatoes au-gratin and, to be honest, I have had better in a cafeteria. On our second visit, we tried the baked potato which was served dry and whole with a plastic take-out container of chive sour cream unceremoniously added to the side. The sauteed mushrooms were swimming in butter and wine and the grilled slice of tomato topped with cheese was neither beautiful nor particularly tasty. With these sub par sides alongside a phenomenal steak, I felt cheated. If I was eating at a cheap chain, this wouldn't trouble me, but I am eating at a historic steak house listed in the 1,000 Places to Visit Before You Die, expecting a fancy-steakhouse-experience. Fortunately, my expectations with the staff were exceeded. The staff has been very friendly, competent, and attentive both times that we have eaten here. Their service is fantastic and a caliber that I would expect from an upscale steakhouse. On an aesthetic note, the decor is lodged firmly in the past in a manner that fails to convey rustic charm or perpetuation of the establishment's legacy. While beautiful and masterfully-carved, the front doors give way to dim lighting and darker woods that are pleasantly nostalgic, but the dark red carpet and back-lit woodland reliefs are in need of an update. The most dire of replacement-need is in the uncomfortable seating and the cafeteria style plates with cafeteria style cutlery. I can appreciate that, in its glory days, this place would have been the talk of the town, with all the glitz and glamour of a longhorn lounge with steaks fresh off the train, masterfully cooked to perfection--if only Johnny's Cafe had better kept up with the times, walking through their doors would feel like a step into the living past rather than a solemn graveyard of an iconic establishment on its death-bed. Its mortality is extended by its excellent steaks and competent, attentive, amazing staff, but I feel this place needs more than just that to keep breathing in a market where you can find other restaurants that have it all and are in the same price range.

Pros: A delicious, juicy steak, cheesy charm, the door Cons: Quite tacky interior, cheesy charm Johnny's Cafe is one of the last remaining old school steakhouses in Omaha, along with Gorat's, Cascio's, Piccolo Pete's and Anthony's. What makes Johnny's a bit higher ranking than the rest of them is the fact that it's located only about a minute away from the old stockyards, so when it comes to authentic, you can't do any better than that. I love coming home to Omaha and having steak. They know the best way to prepare a steak, from feeding the cow, cooking it and preparing it. Nothing tastes better than a good steak from Omaha, and Johnny's comes close to having one of the best steaks in the city. Ribeye, prime rib, beef short ribs all are excellent. Of course, no Omaha old school steakhouse is complete without some greasy french fries and iceberg greens drenched in Italian dressing. The tacky interior and decor is a good-bad for me. It's quite cheesy, but so cheesy in that love it sort of way. Oh, and the door is the coolest, biggest thing I've ever seen. That door alone would be worth the price of admission if the steak wasn't a home run. Delicious! Oh, and vegetarians... stay away. In fact, don't go to any Omaha steakhouses if you are looking for meatless meals. Just my two cents for what it's worth...

The interior seemed stuck in the 1970s and smelled like if the carpet hasn't been washed since. I don't think I have ever seen a Formica table in a steak house, much less with no table cloth. Had a shrimp cocktail as an appetizer which was next to impossible to eat without using pliers to rip them from the metal harness that encased them. Order a filet medium, that came medium well and was average at best, which is not what I expect at a steak house. The bread at the table was probably used for a hockey game earlier that day. We had pretty good service, which was the highlight of the dining event. Skip this place, especially when you have so many other options in Omaha.

Nostalgic, warm and inviting and very very traditional, this is what makes Johnny's Cafe kind of an old-fashioned warm fuzzy. The food was good, not great, but satisfying. Bread and a chive cottage cheese were served as an appetizer to the meal for all. The bread was tasty but would have been much better warmed with warm butter. Served at room temp with refrigerator cold butter pats was not the best option. The rib-eye I had was well seasoned, reasonably tender and a nice size along with two onion rings and a "loaded" baked potato. I had a blue cheese salad as my choice which was also quite good. I should have ordered half/half blue cheese crumbs and creamy but didn't realize they did that until I heard the next table ordering. Wife had fried shrimp that were large but I didn't think overly flavorful. Plenty of food, reasonable prices, attentive service, and a relaxing atmosphere make it a retro experience into the 60's.

My Dad and I set out on a road trip from the Coast with the express purpose of getting an authentic Midwestern steak dinner. Johnny's rocks. From the red pleather swivel seats, full wall forest-theme mural and a plethora of Nebraska football memorabilia, this was the real deal. Onion rings, iceberg wedge with blue cheese (two ways), loaded baked potatoes and melt-in-your-mouth beef. I had the prime rib, medium rare; Dad had the Omaha strip. They made me a stand-up vodka martini, too. Only complaint - the food kept coming, and coming fast. Would have liked to savor this place, since we drove more than 2,000 miles for this meal. Friendly staff and locals. Will seriously consider driving back some day.
