I was confused at first (what with the word 'cafe' in the name and the glossy OWH pictures that prominently featured a salad, omaha.com/article/201005… ). With that in mind (along with the service, decor and OWH quotes like "miracles of taste"), I almost had settled on two stars when confronted with a super sloppy hot roast beef sandwich and potato chips with rainbow sherbet on the side... But once I figured out it's actually 100% diner (plus alcohol), I'm definitely okay with a 3-star review. Truth be told, the carrot cake - which had lots of other veggies in it - and prices alone make it worth three stars. Lunch for three, including dessert to share, was only $24. If you're looking for an all-day breakfast spot, quick bite for lunch, copious alcoholic options (random), and a carrot cake that my friend described as 'too healthy', but I loved, this is the spot for you. FYI for your Groupon/iPhone users - they insist on having a print-out Groupon, but settled for an emailed screen shot of the groupon from my phone.

My wife and I had lunch there and we had the nacho appetizer to start. Then we had the reuben sandwich and a burger. All was very good and priced right. We shared each others meals and both agreed that the burger melted in our mouths and the homemade bun made it perfect.Their spin on the reuben was also very good. The only complaints we had,and they're not a much, were that the fries could have been a little more done,I like mine a little crispier than most. The other was we would rather of had fries with the reuben and instead it came with chips. We didn't ask, but I'm sure they would have let us swap them out for fries. The waitress was very friendly and her table service was 1st class! Everything came in a timely manner. Nothing special to look at, but it works. It was very clean. After all, we go for the food and service mostly.Looking forward to doing supper there next! Keep doing what you're doing!

This place is a hidden gem. My wife and I had Sunday breakfast. I had the french toast, hash browns and sausage. The pork sausage was hand made and you could taste the difference. Hash browns were cooked perfectly and the french toast was light. My wife had the salmon omelette special. Large cuts of salmon, fluffy, great size. She had pancake as well which was light, not the heavy dense chewey kind that you'll sometimes come across. The had a small buffet laid out as well, though we passed, a few other customers had it and there were no complaints. The wait staff was consistently checking to see if they needed to add items, and the feedback from those customers seemed as if they were satisfied with the selection. The owner was extremely nice and reiterated they made everything from scratch. Don't be discouraged by the fact it's in a kind of non descript strip mall. If you're looking for a tasty place for breakfast (or lunch or dinner for that matter) that won't break the bank, you won't go wrong with this place. We live in the neighborhood and plan to check out the dinner menu sometime.

Very good food! They make their own sausage & jam. My only complaint is I wanted more! ;)

The food was actually good but you really have to compartmentalize the experience to realize that. The service detracts from everything so much that you might actually think the food is bad too. When a potential customer walks in the door, I think it is generally accepted that some form of acknowledgement is expected since they have in fact come with the intent to give you business. They were not accidentally transported there from a place like the DMV where you wait and wait and wait purely for the sake of waiting. From other reviews it sounds like the service has been an issue for quite some time so maybe that is actually the intent. But I don't think it's working. When people come to a cafe they are looking to sit down, have coffee and a menu almost immediately served by an attentive overweight waitress who knows when it's time to proceed with each stage of the dining experience that is being paid for. I really want to support a local business that serves good food as this one does but unfortunately for this business, there are other local businesses also serving good food WITH good service. While we waited patiently, we watched quite a few couples/groups come in and turn around or sit down and then get up and leave before being able to order. I think paying a waitress to work here while the cook cooks could be a game changer.

The positive World Herald review led us astray again. We came here for lunch after waiting a few weeks for the post-review rush to calm down. The restaurant definitely shows its early age - inexperienced and unprofessionally dressed staff (yes, it's a cafe, but I don't care to see any waiters in tight workout gear), and slow to arrive meh food. I had the Shrimp Louis wrap. The shrimp was a shocking puce color, without any discernible shrimp flavor. Two meager avocado slices were inedible, unripe and rock hard. The best part was the wrap and flavorful dressing. But $6.95 for that? It's difficult to decide whether to give this place another chance.

We had some delicious food in this unassuming little strip-mall cafe/bistro/restaurant. The chairs and tables are more on the functional side, but the decor is homey and welcoming, with work by local artists on the walls and a jukebox. (My eyes zoomed in on the lush dessert display on the back counter.) Breakfast is served all day long and then there are lunch and dinner portions for the rest of the menu, which contains a little bit of everything. We had tasty huevos rancheros (wow chili) and enchiladas---the dinner salad was actually FULL of real lettuce (no iceberg junk) plus tomato and cucumber slices. You could tell they cared about how the food tasted and the presentation. After a couple bites, we were already looking forward to coming back and trying the other dishes. They also do Sunday brunch . . . The service impressed me. The servers we interacted with were professional, sincerely friendly and helpful. As other reviewers said, the chef came out to see what we thought of the food, which is always pretty cool. I don't think they have a full bar, but, besides a nice wine list, they listed some vodka drinks on the menu.

Disclaimer: Make sure you are NOT in a hurry when you eat here, there is only one chef and he has to cook everything to order This place is one of a kind out in the burbs. It is GOURMET food straight outta culinary school served at REASONABLE prices. I only eat here when I'm willing to spend an hour or two of my time here. It's a really laid back cafe that's a great place to talk with family or friends. It's basically like having a private chef, he can make just about anything if he has the ingredients on hand. His specialties are probably Mexican food considering he is Hispanic. I've never had a bad meal here unlike some of the other people's reviews (I'm not so sure I would get seafood in Nebraska). My roomie recommends the green chili if he's making it.

I thought it was a great atmosphere and wonderful service. During the meal the chef came out to meet us and ask about food quality. The taste of great (especially the chili), but it was a little room temperature. Will be going back to this place.

Went here at 5:00 on a Friday night.... it is not a huge place but it was definetly full of people.... 99.9% of the crowd was extremely old people.....when you walk in you kind of just stand there waiting and no one ever comes up to you to seat or let you know what is going on... you are left to fend for yourself.........I seen a few people come in wait and then leave because of that very situation....... it took twenty min to get our drink orders taken....First off I ordered a Sprite... They were out....... okay.. water will do.... Then I ordered a Taco Salad to eat.... he told me they had just sold their last shell... ( how you are out of shells at dinner time on a friday night is beyond me but okay) but then says no wait...we may still have one and he went off and running to claim it..... turns out there was ONE shell left.....my hubby ordered a hamburger...... he brought our meals...... and what little meat there was in my Taco Salad.... was ice cold... the shell was so old stale and chewy I refused to eat it..... (I have come to the conclusion that ....sometimes getting the last shell.... is not a good thing) he came back to the table and noticed me not eating and said.. umm do you want ranch?? I was like no... but I would like my money back.....he offered to get me something else off of the menu... which I very aggresivley declined....... he then took the plates away and came back and said that we didn't have to pay for the hamburger that we bought either.... and that he did hope that we would give them another try........and all I have to say to that is NO WAY IN HELL..............

My tocayo Luis is a genius. Everything he makes is good, and he's willing to listen to comments about the food as long as they're reasonably well informed. I have been raving about this place to everyone I know for months. A few people are complaining about the service. My impression is that Luis is very much master of his domain. He is kind and polite but he's not a waiter and just doesn't roll with the every-fifteen-seconds kind of customer service that has unaccountably become part of American dining culture. Shut up and wait. His work is very, very much worth it.

I keep finding myself back at this odd, evolving little venue. I see other reviews here criticizing the casual service, or the cafe only having one of a certain item left. This ain't Denny's, and I doubt they have a freezer full of prepackaged junk waiting to thaw on your plate when you arrive hungry and expectant! A remarkable number of items are made from scratch with the chef/owner creating on the fly. Brunch on Sunday's can be chaotic, as they work feverishly to fill the varied and interesting mini buffet. What I really like is that it has a very personal feel. The food is good to pretty darn good. But I get the feeling like we are there to be part of the experience every time we go. The small staff is in tune with the creative process in the kitchen and it feels a bit like home. I tried their pizza the other night and was most pleased! Also tried dinner a week ago ago and the pork chop was nothing short of delicious. Try this place out.

Let me start by saying that the food here was very, very good. The only drawback, as mentioned by most of the other posters, is that everything is hand-cooked to order by the chef so you need to exercise patience. I didn't have a problem with this as it wound up being worth the wait, but the only issue was that my lady's lunch came out much sooner than mine. I had the pork chile pizza, which was extremely flavorful but also extremely spicy. People, we are talking 12-alarm please dump a bucket of cold water on my head spicy! The chef indicated that they sometimes do the pork chile as a standalone meal, but that most people find that it is too spicy without a supporting base to balance it out such as pizza crust. Homemade desserts were also on tap, including homemade apple pie and a brownie crust cheesecake, which we ordered. It was very tasty and crust set up very nice. The chef stated that he is constantly rotating in new dessert options depending on feedback from the customers. Speaking of the chef - he was great. He came out, checked on us several times, and seemed very interested in our feedback. This is not a place I would go if you were in a hurry or aren't willing to try something a little different, but is a refreshing option in this part of town that is surrounded by fast food chains, Perkins, and other similar options.

Today was my 4th visit to Café 96 to their newer location on 96th & L. I had been to Café L when they were located in LaVista, and honestly I swore I'd never go back. I'm not going to dwell on that though because obviously things have changed. Only because of their close proximity to where I work did I decide to give them another try. So glad I did. My 1st visit I ordered the pulled pork bbq sandwich. It was delicious...smoked perfectly, extremely tender and shredded with a tangy bbq sauce to pour over it. The bun was even fantastic, and Chef Luis says not only is the bun homemade, but everything they sell is homemade! I went back a second time hoping to try something different, but was so sold on the bbq pork sandwich that I ordered it again! So...on my 3rd visit I opted for the hot Italian beef sandwich. Although messy to eat...was very good. The beef was sliced thin with Italian seasoned au jus that was delicious and soaked throughout the hoagie roll. Today I enjoyed my 4th meal from Café 96 & L and ordered the cheese pizza with a few veggies on top. I enjoyed the pizza....immediately looking at it you could see the cheese on top was fresh, and plenty of it! The sauce just a tiny bit on the sweeter side which I do not prefer, however this was not a deal breaker for me. The crust was fantastic...tasted like it was cooked in a wood pizza oven. Thin crust and crunchy....perfect!! Bottom line - I recommend Café 96 & L for food cooked from scratch that is tasty and affordable! Already looking forward to my 5th visit!!

I believe this place just opened up. Went there for lunch today. I was impressed. Not a ton of items on the menu, but quite the range. We had the Breakfast Burrito and the Hot Beef Sandwich. Both were very good. For dessert, we had the Eggnog Cheesecake and some kind of chocolate cake that was too rich for me. The owner was incredibly nice and took the time to chat with us about our dishes. Bottom line: I like this place!
