Stumbled on this place during a cross country trip and glad we did! Awesome burgers made with top notch beef. Great salads with super fresh veggies. A little bit of a long wait given it's a counter service joint but it's totally worth it!

We were on a spontaneous drive from North Platte, thinking about checking out Lake McConaughy a few miles north of Ogallala, and realized we were starving. I wanted to skip the usual fast food and find a local place and this one has the best Yelp review. I had relatively high expectations. It was a Sunday, presumably after people were getting done with church, and it was pretty busy. We had to stand in line to order at the counter, which I'm not knocking them for in my review--lots of places operate that way and under any other circumstances, I wouldn't have minded. But we had our four kids with us, we'd been in the car for a while, we were all ready to just sit down and get some drinks and an appetizer going. The menu all looked really good. I'm guessing this place is known and liked for its burgers, but we were planning on grilling burgers for dinner and decided to order chicken. I got the "northcoast" sandwich, with pico, guac, and pepper jack cheese. I figured that was a safe bet with those ingredients, but it had surprisingly little flavor. The fries looked terrible, tasted pretty good, didn't have the best texture. Too soggy for me. The kids chicken ("yard bird") strips looked very weird and unappetizing, but they seemed to like them. Oh, and we started off with a pitifully small order of fried pickles for $7. Barely enough to share. The best thing for me was that their beer menu includes a rotating seasonal or local beer on tap. I always get local beer if it's an option, and this one didn't disappoint. They had Cornstalker dark wheat, and I had seen it in grocery stores before but never tried it. It was absolutely fantastic. Overall I was pretty underwhelmed for what we spent, but I would probably go back and give it another try for the burgers.

Food was good, definitely an excellent burger. Nice place for a small town. But we thought $22 for one burger, one chicken sandwich, fries, and soda was on the high side, though. Restaurant ambiance was clean, but not anything special. All in all, we probably would have just as well grabbed a Mickey D's and kept rolling.

A bit in the middle of nowhere but a good burger joint none the less. Large portions, clean, brand new restaurant and an area with a pool table & video games for the kids.

Cute place, friendly and fast....but need to ask for lettuce and tomato on burger(?)- would stop here again

Great burgers, great chicken sandwich, friendly service. I highly recommend if you're passing through.

  • Justin G.

Good burgers, bad service. At least take the time to educate your rude teenage staff about the beef and local beers you serve. Also there's a "bar" but you have to get up and walk over to the ordering place to get them to serve you.

  • Charlene G.

We stopped here on our way back from a mini road trip. There was an extremely long line and only one cashier taking orders (you order by the bar and then they bring you the food). Besides that, the ambiance was nice and cozy. The food was good in my opinion, but not great. My burger lacked flavor, but my sweet potato fries were really good. My husband did not care for their salad dressings, he tried cesar and ranch and both were a disappointment so he did not eat his salad. Overall I think it's an average burger joint.

What a great stop, believe the previous reviews. I had the Gomorrah burger and my wife, the blue northern. Mine was very good and hers was better, and the service was very friendly and home town. If we come through here again, we will come back.

This is a new restaurant in town. They are *fabulous*. Some would say they have a limited menu because they serve burgers and chicken sandwiches. HOWEVER, that's because they specialize in burgers. Don't come expecting to get in and out in short order...they make everything *to order* and it's well worth the wait! They have cute names for their specialty burger like Gomorrah and Goober (peanut butter!). They also have wonderful yardbird (chicken) sandwiches. Each of the sandwiches can be ordered on one of several buns including brioche, sourdough, and jalapeno.

  • Blake M.

VERY clean, well lit and great atmosphere. They do things a little differently than most are used to, you have to order at the counter and go get your food when it's ready (a lot like 5 guys). The hamburgers are great with all kinds of toppings/sauces you can ask for. GREAT selection of beer on tap and in bottles. I would highly recommend this place over any other burger joint around

Not to be missed, great burgers and drinks. Very pleasant local atmosphere. Extremely friendly staff. Reasonably priced.

On our way from Iowa to Colorado, we were sick of fast food and looking for nice local sit down restaurant. Reviews for Open Range Grill looked good so we decided to take a chance. It was packed when we arrived but we ordered our food pretty quickly. We headed outside to the patio with the kids so they could run around and waited. And waited. And waited. We finally went inside to inquire about our food after about an hour. It looked like at least four other annoyed groups who ordered ahead of us were waiting as well. After the manager (?) was through taking care of those parties, we were able to get her attention and she told us she would look into it for us. To be fair, they did get the kids some fries and chocolate milks at that point. So we settled into a booth inside and waited another 20 minutes for our order which only consisted of the burger special of the day, a cobb salad, a kid's hot dog and a kid's quesadilla. When the food did finally get there, all I can say is that it was okay. I've had much better and I've had worse. So all in all, our side trip to get some decent food and stretch our legs a bit turned into 2 hours, 10 minutes of which was spent eating. So, I would say if you're staying near the lake and don't mind waiting around if you need to for just okay food, this is the restaurant for you. If you're on the road and don't have hours to spend, keep on driving!

Disappointed is the word that comes to mind after stopping for lunch. I was excited to try the burger and poppers so we went out of our way while traveling I-80. The decor was nice and the place was clean. The biggest disappointment was the way the burger was cooked; very well done. Both of our burgers were so well done that there was no juice and little flavor. The meat itself is of good quality, so it is sad to receive an over cooked burger. The poppers were just OK, not great and definitely previously frozen. I think they were over hyped. If you come here for a burger and don't want it over cooked, make sure you let them know.

Great place! Loved the food and the atmosphere!

    (5)
  • Diane G.

The food was pretty tasty however there are some things to be aware of: The big open room is very noisy, including pool games and children screaming to hear the sound of their voices. It also takes quite some time, if there is a crowd, to stand in line to place your order. The food is made to order so you wait for that too. Luckily it was worth the time: good meat and salads, fries looked good yet pricey.

  • Andrew C.

Burgers didn't disappoint & Yard Bird sticks (Chicken fingers) were excellent! Worth the stop if you get the chance.

  • Plucky M.

HIT and MISS. HITS: good atmosphere, good for kids, great onion rings & sweet potato fries. Friendly service, normal wait time. MISSES: 1 overcooked and crumbly burger (my husband's was fine), patty melt was ALL WRONG: pumpernickel instead of rye, really aggressive sauce that overwhelmed all other flavors. Overall I would stop again when traveling through, but avoid the party melt.

We were actually guided here by Yelp, on a trip through Nebraska to the Black Hills. I used to live in Ogallala and wow, this is a big improvement on most of the food there! It's definitely got a bar vibe, but we had a great lunch there with our kids (7 and 11). The burgers are good, and the sweet potato fries are excellent. We also tried the papa fries, which are like home fries with jalapeno and cheese in them. Verdict: weird but definitely interesting, and we ate the whole serving. Counter service was friendly enough.

    (4)
  • Leslie S.

I don't want to disparage Ogallala for being....well..Ogallala.... but seriously? I can't imagine how anyone can rate this place 5 stars as the best burger in Nebraska. And those of you from Colorado? Have you never been to Cactus Jacks in Evergreen? Buds Bar in Sedalia? This was so not the best burger ever that I am dumb founded how any non- Ogallala resident can think differently. First be prepared as this is counter service not table side. I can forgive that just wish I was prepared for it. . Second watch your bill. If there is a wait and you start a tab for drinks AND you are tourist (this is a local place) you may get stiffed for $5 beers when you ordered $2 beer. Of course this is an assumption as a tourist. Maybe they try to stiff you no matter where you are from. Last if you see the salad and are tempted to order. .order it! That was my first inclination. Order salad. BUT you're in Nebraska and the owner is a rancher and it's fresh beef - Plus Yelp is screaming Order THE BURGER! So I did. Wish I saved my beef consumption for Omaha... The bun was way bigger than my burger, the beef was over cooked (they diden't ask you how you would like it done - but given the reviews - I assumed a rancher owned establishment would know that you would want your burger moist......). Fries were good though.. Am I being too harsh? We are tourists and I rely on Yelp and TripAdvisor for their recommendations - boy you were both way off base on this one. And if this was a fluke...well shame on them for their lack of consistency.

Awesome atmosphere. All of us loved the chicken tenders and the homemade ranch. Burgers had nice flavor. They used real bacon, too. The secret sauce that came with the kids burger was way too much as far as spices. The homemade potato fries and sweet potato fries were both excellent. Live music was great, too. We'll come here again, for sure.

  • Kelly M.

We haven't had a good burger since leaving Texas. It was superb! It's a clean, comfortable place. My husband was excited about the beer. The service was quick and accurate. We will definitely be back!

  • Zach F.

Just passing through Ogallala on a road trip, we stopped in here for dinner. It's a self serve style joint, you get to make your decision of burger AND bun. I got the Lonesome Man burger; caramelized onion and garlic, chipotle mayo on a brioche bun. Very delicious, French fries were great, both with a homemade feel to it. Clean well kept place with a place to play pool and arcade games. Friendly staff and relaxed comfortable setting. Nothing to complain about. If we ever pass through Ogallala again we'll be sure to stop back

We found this place via the Yelp app and decided to drive the mile off of the highway to take a gander. Boy were we happy with the food, the choices, the restaurant decor and the service. These folks are friendly and it reflects in their service, food and menu. It's a really reasonably priced, wholesome stop, with vegetarian options (not too many mind you) as well as a very good beer selection. I'd go the extra mile again.

This is a pretty cool place for middle of nowhere Nebraska! I like the atmosphere (good for kids and there was a billiards type room off of the dining area) and their drinks are really inexpensive. The only downside to this place is that the young lady taking our order and delivering the food was pretty unpleasant and had an 'entitled teenager' type of attitude. I had the patti melt and it was ok. The onions weren't grilled properly since they were barely grilled at all and the sauce was really really rich to the point that I could only take a few bites of my sandwich. The hamburger itself was pretty tasty. The fries were incredible!!! I used my son's hamburger sauce which is basically mayo, ketchup, horseradish and something else that I cant remember-so basically fry sauce (if you know what fry sauce is, you're probably from Colorado or Utah:) and it was really good. My husband had their bleu cheese burger and it was pretty tasty, although far too much cheese was on it and I'm a huge fan of bleu cheese! He got the sweet potato fries and they tasted fine, I just wish they were cut thicker. The sauce that came with was a chipotle type sauce but I didn't care for it. Over all the prices were pretty good and the food was ok. I might give it another shot next time we drive to NE from Denver.

Best burger I've had in a long time! I went in with a huge appetite and it hit the spot. On top of it all for a small town in Nebraska they have a great selection of beers to choose from! Definitely will be making this a stop the next time driving through. Sure was glad the bar next to the truck stop down the road was closed or we might have missed out. 5+ Stars!

We had a great lunch here on our drive from Colorado to Illinois. We loved the jalapeño burger (with locally sourced beef), hot papas (fried hash brown bites with cheese and jalapeños), hand-cut fries, and the house salad. The restaurant was clean, the counter service was quick, and the ambience was great.

Just off the interstate but well worth the drive past the fast food places. The food is all fresh and tasted great!

  • Sam J.

This is a burger restaurant where you order at the counter and find a seat. The burgers are good but the menu is fairly limited. The big drawback is the time it takes to get your food after ordering. It was about a half hour wait for us and those around us.

  • Josh R.

This place was off the beaten path for our move out to Chicago, from Colorado. We were getting a tad peckish, so my wife and I looked up some restaurants (that weren't fast-food joints) and Open Range Grill came up. I ordered the "El Patron" burger, which had grilled (fresh, not canned) jalapeños, bacon, pepperjack cheese and mayo. I opted for the jalapeño bun, as well, and was not disappointed. My wife and mother-in-law (who aided us in our move, along with my father-in-law) split the "Blue Northern." This had, as I am sure you guessed, bleu cheese, bacon, and grilled onions. Both burgers had amazing meat, which was juicy and big. The beer assortment was fantastic and the fries there were cooked to crispy, golden-brown perfection. All-in-all, this place will be a regular occurrence, should we decide to take a road trip back to Colorado. Happy eating!

  • Samuel C.

Absolutely amazing burgers and salads! ...imo, the best restaurant in Ogallala...very fresh and the beef is from a local farm. Get the Goober burger.. .trust me. And, Kim from Maui is the best :)

  • Erica C.

Lots of character packed into this local joint. Met our expectations and was very affordable. Very fun and way better than a chain. Gave us the opportunity to take the scenic route. Pool table and shuffle board looked awesome. Seems like and excellent place to hang when you aren't just passing through. Would return for sure!

  • Kaai L.

We stopped at this restaurant on our way to Colorado simply based on yelp reviews. When we first walked in, it was a little empty which sometimes is not so good of a thing, but we stuck around and ordered something. Once our food came out and we took our first bites, we were fans! The cheeseburger I ate was so good and I'm really not that much of a fan of beef. My daughter even ate all of her food, which does not happen very often. The burger itself was not dry and was very flavorful. I would definitely come here again if we so happen to drive through this area.

  • Dan N.

Glad we detoured into town for the awesome burgers! Great variety of burger choices, all made with local, natural beef. I had the Lonesome Man; grilled onions, smoked cheddar & chipotle mayo - yum! Only criticism is I would have liked a lot more onions on it. There are a bunch of side choices but I say stick with the hand cut fries or salad. Casual atmosphere, kid friendly. Wish I didn't have 12 hours of driving ahead otherwise I'd hang out and have a beer. Decent options on tap.

We drove from Chicago to Denver for Christmas. On the way back we stopped here based on some reviews on yelp. It was definately worth it! We have three boys and it was the perfect environment for them :) it is very relaxed and nice. Will definately be going back when we pass through again

The best thing about coming back to Nebraska over the holidays is being able to eat real Nebraska beef at this place - and they have a killer selection of beer, as well! I generally get the burger of some variety and it's always cooked the way it should be (medium) and the portions are huge. The atmosphere is unique and the folks are friendly. It's not a chain restaurant and it's worth the wait to get something unique!

    (5)
  • Michele P.

Definitely worth the trip off of I80! I had a fantastic steak salad and my hubby had the Northern Blue Burger. It was all great and some of the coldest beer on tap I ever had! Yummy

    (4)
  • Jake F.

This place was brilliant. Great inside (tables, chairs, and walls all made out of visually-pleasing wood), varied and unique food choices, and the burger I had was one of the best. Reasonably priced as well.

    (5)
  • Sarah P.

Just finished up here and was pleasantly surprised. Good vegetarian options and solid beer selection. Fast wifi and clean bathrooms make it the spot to go while driving thru. Yum!

  • Delta B.

Truly excellent food and great atmosphere. I wasn't in the mood for a burger until I got a look at their menu. The Lonesome Man burger was well designed, cooked perfectly and delicious! $8 for a great burger is an excellent value too. This place is definitely worth leaving the highway for if you're passing through.

We stopped in Ogallala for the night on our trip home from Colorado. Count on Yelpers to help us find some amazing burgers and fries. The beef is grown on the owners' ranches and as fresh as can be. There is a huge assortment of craft brews, but we opted for hard cider with our burgers. I enjoyed the daily special mushroom and Swiss, and my husband raved about the Blue Northern burger. The fries were fresh cut with skins, and the sweet potato fries were among the best ever. The burgers were juicy and full of flavor, and the fries hot and crisp. If this place was near our home, it would be the go-to for those days when you crave some ground beef. Worth a stop, for sure!

  • Mel R.

Locally raised beef. Soft brioche bun. delectable smoked cheddar cheese. This place is an awesome spot just off the 80 between Denver and Nebraska. If you are taking this route, it's an awesome burger stop. It's clean and inviting.

  • Byron C.

Great beer selection and very good burgers made with high-quality beef. Nice relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Wait in line to order and then sit wherever you want. Nice patio available in back. I would definitely go back if I were in the neighborhood.

  • Kaye W.

A nice stop for I-80 road trips with a local feel. I grew up on a cattle farm myself and know a quality burger which you'll definitely find here. Good food, friendly service, and a decent selection of bottled craft beers.

    (5)
  • Hillary S.

Food is yummy, staff is friendly and has a little area for the kids to play. You should stop and eat here if your in this area! The outside looks a little off putting but the inside is nice.

    (5)
  • Monica K.

Awful. Horribly dry burgers. If your mouth is watering, these burgers will dry it up real quick. I got the Lonesome Man burger. It had about 2 Spoonfuls of uncooked minced garlic sitting on the patty. Had to douce it in ketchup to get through it.

    (1)
  • Tiffany T.

The reviews said it all.. Best burgers in Nebraska.. I completely agree with everyone else. It takes awhile to get your food, but that is because they are all made to order. The fried green beans were excellent along with the party melt and bacon bbq cheeseburger. I would highly recommend to anyone passing through this town.

    (5)
  • Ron S.

Simple layout and lots of room at this joint. "Happy" patrons will make sure you have plenty of entertainment. De-calf-inated (Bronc style) is tasty for non-meat eaters. Ask Bethany about the musical potential of your children and the craft beer selection, unless you simply cannot get over how much you love Coors light... Cheers!

Beef was delicious. Food was surprisingly delicious what a great place to stop off and have a burger. Don't pass this place up. Love how they have made a trip through such a great trip.

  • Kirsten F.

Great burger joint! I had the best patty melt ever! The wait staff was great . The atmosphere is kind of western sports bar which was nice and casual. French fries were fresh cut and great! If I ever drive through here again I will stop in!

  • Samantha L.

What a great stop on my recent road trip! This clean and huge wooden building was right off the exit, next to a soap box derby track, and was just what we were hoping for in Nebraska. The menu was primarily grass-fed beef, though other items do exist on the menu. The sign outside is from Budweiser and tells folks hunters are welcome, and there are farm truck license plates on some of the vehicles parked outside -- but don't be turned away! The moment you walk in, the friendly owner will greet you with a hello and warmth, even suggestions on what to order. Your food will be delicious, and you'll love the atmosphere. You may even see a real life cowboy stop in; we did! We loved it so much we even bought pint glasses to take home!

  • Maia S.

Free-range beef from the ranch owned by the same folks as own the restaurant. It is not organic only because they immunize their herd. The best hamburger I've had in 10 years. The fries were hot and crispy and yummy. Don't pass Ogallala NE on Interstate 80 (exit 126) without a visit to the Open Range Grill. Closed on Tuesdays.

This place was yummy!! Found them on Yelp while driving to Illinois. Great burger selection which was cooked perfectly and tasted delish with sweet potato fries and a nice side salad

  • Gina K.

Waited an hour for our food and saw staff out back on a smoke break. They really weren't super busy and one of the cooks was fussing with the TV to get a golf game on. Asked about the wait and the response was "it's comin'." There was a gluten free bun which was excellent. The fries were terrible and flavorless. The burgers were just ok and not as good as the previous reviews had stated. This is not worth the drive across town or the wait.

    (1)
  • Michael N.

My 22yo son and I stopped in for burgers as we were passing through. We really enjoyed our burgers, and the fries were fantastic as well. Good selection of brews, some of which were local to Nebraska. We had absolutely nothing negative to say.

    (4)
  • Tanya S.

Long wait times without the restaurant being overly busy. Disliked them screaming out everyone's names for the orders, giving people numbers would be much more efficient and more enjoyable for the guests who are dining. Atmosphere was pleasant and clean. The burger was good however, the gluten free bun was so so.

  • Scott H.

Fantastic burgers (grassfed!) Fries & onion rings were right on. Good selection of beers on tap. Good vibe overall. Worth the short drive off the highway.

  • Donna R.

What a great burger - one of the best I've had. The beef had great flavor and the sourdough roll was a great burger bun. It held together well, and had good flavor. We went there because of all the good reviews, and were not disappointed.

    (5)
  • Lindsay K.

The owners of this joint built this place, and also own the ranch that provides the beef. Very local! The food is awesome and incredibly fresh. They offer some really unique burger combos - really can't go wrong, especially with their specials! Service was friendly and quick, even with a group of 12!

  • Stephany C.

Great place in the middle of Nebraska! Stop here instead of a fast food joint you will not regret it! Have the hot papas for sure! The steak salad is flavorful and the special will most like always be a winner! Great find!

  • Erin T.

Great stop!! The restaurant is clean and the employees are all helpful and friendly. We are from out of town and went here just based on other reviews, and it didn't disappoint. The flow is a little different in that you order and then sit. The only criticism is that all the burgers are cooked medium/well to well. I'm not sure if they'd cook it otherwise, but if that's what you prefer it's worth asking.

  • Amelia W.

Passing through this horrid town and stumbled upon this gem. Be advised that you order at the counter. Don't be stuck sitting for 20 minutes waiting for your server like idiots. Like we did. Once we figured it out, service was fast. Food was hot, fresh and delicious. I had the burger with seated onions and garlic and spicy mayo. Best burger I think I've ever had. Definitely worth the $7.99. Also loved the fresh hand cut fries. My kids even are the quesadillas. Will be back next time we pass through the Midwest.

  • Katie G.

Amazing!!! Fantastic food and fabulous service. My son has food allergies and they were super accommodating. Food was superb and draft beer options were great as well. We stopped off during a vacation pit stop but will definitely return if we are in the area again.

  • Zoe T.

Great place! We stopped for a quick meal and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and excellent service. The beer selection was terrific - first (but not last) time drinking a "Cornstalker" stout beer. Hamburgers were excellent - good selection, juicy and well-dressed. Nice fresh salad, perfectly cooked fries. Good kid menu. Lovely service behind the counter. Good experience by any standard - exceptional for a road trip pitstop.

After reading the reviews here....my expectations were high These folks did not disappoint. I was on my way back from Park City, UT and drove off 1-80 to try the place. I had no idea you walk in to restaurant and up to the counter to place your order. Menu items are clearly written on a blackboard and a few specials were posted on a sign in front of the counter. I placed my order and was given a glass for my pop order. They have fountain pop to the left of the counter and you help yourself. I can't remember the name of the burger I ordered. It was called the El-****......i just can't remember the name. The burger was spicy with grilled jalapenos, cheese, etc.....and there was a choice of 4 buns. I had the jalapeno bun. I sat myself down at an available table. About 15 minutes later someone came out from behind the counter and called my name......then bought my burger to my table. The burger was quite simply first rate. It really doesn't get much better than this. I highly recommend this restaurant....and it's worth the 3 km drive off 1-80.

Solid burgers- not the best I've ever had, but way above fast food fare. We stopped on a Saturday at lunch and service was quick. Clean, updated dining area with a large outdoor seating area.

  • Erin R.

This restaurant is one not to miss on your way to the Lake! The food is delicious and ranges from standard to "Foody", the prices are reasonable and the collection of photographs from early settlers of the area make the wait for food enjoyable. It's as good as anything you will find in California or Colorado!

Burgers

Burger or Hamburger is savored as the most desired fast food meal in the United States. A hamburger is basically a sandwich prepared by stuffing ground meat patty, generally beef, between two slices of a bun cut in half. Hamburger is also famous for its seasoning. Most popular condiments used in hamburgers in the United States are mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup.
