Unfortunately, I am from Texas and prefer texmex. I know that Mexican food north of OK is much different than in the south. With that said, the chicken enchiladas are terrible. The tamales are not bad, and the salsa is actually pretty good.

Don't miss this place if you're in/near the Queen City! Went on a Monday at 11:30 AM and it was PACKED. With good reason. The food is wonderful and the service is friendly and competent. My dining companion had the molcajete and I went with the carne asada. The dish was served in a bowl (not a molcajete) but it tasted FABULOUS. It was legit, it even had cactus in it! For $11.99, you got enough food for two or three meals. The carne was also very tasty. One caution: the margaritas are no bueno. Stay away from the margs if you know what's good for you. Overall, a five star experience! Strongly recommend.

I'm sitting in Don Pedro's as I write this. Couldn't wait to dig in to Pork Carnitas. Too bad for me, these were the worst I've EVER tasted. The meat chunks arrived dry, tough, and unappetizingly arrayed. I tasted them, but my teeth confirmed what my eyes saw: dry, tough, unappetizing fare. Too bad. The beans and rice were good. When the server asked about the meal I told her that I was not enjoying it. She said, "ok." No response from management, no apology, just a bill with no compensation for cruddy meat. I will never eat here again. You shouldn't waste your money either.

I was doing a little work in the area and Yelped for some place to eat. I liked the reviews so I decided to try it out. OK, a multitude of things happened here. First night I ordered and did not get what i ordered. The water argued that I was wrong. Never a good idea to tell the customer he was wrong, especially when he pointed at the item he wanted. As a consultant by trade I always offer a few tips that can help business do better: Restaurants in the States typically advise there wait staff to ask diners things like "hows your meal" etc. A closed end question. This typically gets an answer of fine, good, OK etc. If a restaurant really wants a true response, they should ask an open ended question, something like "What could we have done to make your meal better" Very limited beer selection, micro brews/IPA's are in right now so it is always a good idea to carry what is in....

Since I live in So Cal, I get to enjoy good Mex food often, but was not optimistic about finding anything comparable in ND. Fortunately, Don Pedro's was a pleasant surprise. The service was pleasant and prompt. The chips and salsa came along with a tasty warm bean dip that was a nice little extra. I ordered the seafood "molcajete", which is essentially a Mexican stew. It came in a regular bowl instead of the traditional stone molcajete bowl, but was piping hot and very flavorful. The portion was quite large and had a generous amount of fish, shrimp and scallops. Delicious! I would certainly recommend this restaurant and will make it a point to eat there again on my next visit to Dickinson.

I don't give five stars very often but this cute, family-owned Mexican restaurant was a cool find in this tar sands oil boom town. We were really bummed out by the high hotel prices but this restaurant saved the day with its gracious and friendly servers and delicious food. I had the Enchiladas Suisas which consisted of 2 cheese and one ground beef enchilada with Monterey Jack topping, beans and rice. All very tasty. The chips and salsa were delcious. My dinner companion had Steak Jalisco which was delicious, tender skirt steak with melted Monterey jack and jalapeños, beans and rice. We really, really enjoyed the food and service here and obviously the locals did too as the place was packed. Don't miss out on this place when traveling anywhere near Dickinson, ND.

Most of the time they have great service but the last time I was there I was told my shrimp was burnt and the Cook put cheese on it to cover it up. And I wouldn't have given them three stars if the lady wouldn't have served it to me. In the end I had to change my plate for something else which ruined my experience. Not going back at all.

This place is our "go-to" Mexican restaurant. We usually order the Cheese Dip with our chips. So good! Also the Carne Asada is always fantastic. Service is usually great. I don't think we have ever had a problem with our orders. Not too shabby for North Dakotian- Mexican Food ;)

Best Mexican food in town. Hands down. Great service, awesome margaritas... I literally eat here multiple times each week and if not, I order carry out. I would give 6 stars if that was an option. The chips and salsa are amazing as well. Love it

Exciting and interesting decor. Decent service. Huge portions. Kiwi margarita rocks. Recommend the tacos and sizzling fajitas!

Very fast, friendly service with RIDICULOUS sized portions. Huge! I only gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the tomatoes weren't ripe. Everything else-and we ordered a lot-was great. Not too many restaurants have good tomatoes. A bit pricey, but big portion sizes. Might be Sysco commissary, but the cooks here, at least lately, know what they are doing.

I'm from the south and I like a little spice and a little heat in my Mexican food, I didn't get that here. The service, while very good, could not make up for the extremely bland food. I had Chile Colorado and it was absolutely flavorless. My husband had Mole Chicken Enchiladas and I think it was just some unseasoned boiled chicken thrown in a corn tortilla covered in a sauce that vaguely resembled mole. However, I did enjoy the rice. Oh, and the Corona I ordered wasn't as cold as I think a beer should be, it was tolerably chilled.

I live in San Antonio and have had plenty of authentic Mexican food so when our taxi cab driver recommended Don Pedro's to us, I was highly skeptical. North Dakota is not the first place you think of when you think of good Mexican food. Well, Richard, our taxi cab driver, you were right and I apologize. We didn't eat inside the restaurant so I can't comment on the efficiency of the staff or the cleanliness of the restaurant. The woman who helped us with our take-out order was friendly, although there was a serious language barrier. It took us a good 10 minutes to order because she couldn't understand us. The guacamole really needed salt and lemon. It was fresh and tasty but it was SO bland! Thank God my tacos came with lime and I was able to snag some salt from the hotel. Don Pedro's...GUACAMOLE NEEDS SALT AND LEMON. My husband decided on the "Chile Relleno Burrito". His exact words were "it was very, very good". They actually used an authentic poblano pepper and plenty of cheese. It was spicy, tender and delicious. It came with rice, beans, lettuce and tomatoes. I'm not even into poblano peppers and I'd order this for myself. I ended up ordering the "Fajita Burrito" with steak and rice. It was humungous! Definitely don't order yourself a side of carnitas tacos (like I did) because this burrito will fill you up and leave you with a nice lunch the day after. If you're staying at the La Quinta, I'd recommend this over the Country Kitchen. It's within walking distance and the food is pretty darn good. We'd definitely eat here again and I'm glad I could find some good Mexican food in North Dakota!

Food was not very good. Had fajitas asked what came in them said peppers and onions. When severed them with broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, peppers and onions with a little bit of steak for $17.50 it was a lot of veggie filler and very little protein... And steak tasted burnt like had not cleaned the grill after burning something prior.

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants out there. The food is always hot and delicious. Today I had their special, the chimichanga and yum! but everything I've ever had is good. My husband doesn't like refried beans but he will eat their bean dip. It's delicious. The price is reasonable and it is authentic Mexican.

  • Ron R.

All in all not bad. I typically order enchiladas when I eat out at a Mexican restaurant and I always ask for steak instead of just beef. It's usually not on the menu but I always get it. Not this time. Even though they have steak and it's available with other entrees, they would not let me order steak in my enchiladas. So I went with a fajita burrito taking the advice of a fellow Yelper. It was good and definitely a good portion. Service was very good until the end. For some reason I waited unusually long for my bill. They came and cleaned the table and left me sitting there. I wouldn't let that throw me though. I will definitely come back when in the area.

One of the worst Mexican restaurants I've been to in a LONG time. First, the prices are ridiciulously high for really crummy food. A taco, rice and beans was $11!! Insane! I got a combination platter with a chicken chalupa, a chicken burrito with rice/beans. The rice was dry and had very little flavor. The burrito just had chicken in it...nothing else. And the chalupa barely had any cheese inside of it. They were both covered in the same red sauce, which was so gross. I couldn't eat it. I was also given a taco, which I didn't order (and the waitress thought I got an extra burrito, so clearly she didn't even know what we had ordered). It was the only half decent thing, but it was as big as my head! And the shell fell to pieces as soon as I tried to pick it up. I ate less than half the taco, a bite of each of the burrito and chalupa and the beans (which were the ONLY thing that was good there). The salsa was so bizarre. It seemed to be almost creamy, but had no cream...almost like tomato soup or something was used. Very gross. My son got quesadillas and you could still see the individual cheese strands inside of it (so not cooked long enough). For $7 for a kids meals (which again, is outrageous for a tiny quesadilla, rice and beans) I expected it to be cooked better. We lived in El Paso for 4 years, so I know what Mexican food tastes like; this is NOT it. We'd never eat there again and I'd never tell anyone to eat there either. Just don't. El Sombrero is MUCH better, much closer to authentic, and is reasonably priced.

Had the Wednesday night special - fajitas with chorizo. It was delicious and enough to feed two. Right by the interstate - I highly recommend.

Everything served here comes off a Sysco truck. Mexican food my a$$. These idiots from California and Arizona are just that. I grew up in So Cal and I know Mexican food.

I can't compare this place to anywhere else in town yet but I've heard it's the best around. I have travelled quite a bit trying Mexican food everywhere possible and I must say once you try it in Texas, Oregon and some places in Southern California (basically anywhere with an influx of the native people to the food)...you just can't compare. With all that being said this spot is decent. The service, prices, environment and food were all average. My family and I will return from time to time hoping to find a usual on the menu that we know will always be good.

Worst service !!! The management doesn't seem care. The place was just about empty and the service was still horrible. .most of the staff was just sitting out in the waiting area talking not caring about their terrible terrible service. Our waitress came up and brought us the check and said in a nonchalant way sorry about the bad service. I'm not going to spend my hard earned money at Don Pedro's again any of the Don Pedro's. Change the cooks and the menu and the food is just mediocre probably could've made better in my own kitchen.

Good Mexican food, you get a lot for what you pay for. Their salsa was great. I had the enchiladas and really liked them. Good atmosphere and the waiters were good also.

I'm in town visiting from Phoenix with my parents and was craving some good Mexican food. This placed seemed like it would do the trick. But it was a pretty bad experience, food and service wise. The chips and salsa were not good at all. We ordered our food and about 5 minutes later, my mom got her taco she ordered. Then after 10 more minutes, the waiter delivered the rice and beans to me and my dad (we got the fajitas to share). After a few more minutes, the fajitas finally came. The meat was steak and pork mixed together (I figured it would have been separated) and the pork was absolutely disgusting, so much as I hope I don't get sick from the 2 bites I took of it. We were all extremely disappointed.

Great north of the border south of the boarder restaurant. Good food, great margaritas, friendly staff, prompt service and clean and inviting atmosphere.

Absolutely horrid!! They must have changed hands or cooks!! Was a great place but WTF! Ground beef taco looked and smelled like dog food! Lunch fajitas had hair in it and i cant figure what was wrong with chicken fajita burrito. Does Not deserve 1 star.

I definitely would say this is the better of the Mexican places in town. That being said I still was not impressed. The only difference is the chef here at least uses some spices. I have lived in Texas & California as well as traveled to mexico. Tonight I ordered molcajete which is one of my fav dishes and what I received looked like molcajetes black sheep cousin. It vaguely resembled the deliciousness that I have enjoyed in places closed to the border. If you come here expect ok food but don't expect it to resemble what you thought you ordered

While I went to school in Dickinson, I had only eaten at Don Pedro's twice in the 3 years that it was open. At that time I probably would have given it a 3 star review (okay service, so-so food, nice atmosphere but way overpriced). The only two that have remained the same are the last two. I still love the design of the restaurant, but the food is way too expensive for what you get, especially considering how terrible it has gotten. It really is a shame to waste such a beautifully authentic Mexican facade like that. Little disclaimer: since finishing school at DSU, I moved to Houston, and it is pretty hard to compare the Tex-mex there with Mexican food up north. That being said, Don Pedro's now has the blandest food I've tasted in North Dakota. The enchiladas were terrible, and besides messing up all 3 of our orders, I just plain didn't like the food. The service has also become terrible, and our waitress had a horrific attitude. If you want Mexican food in dickyville, I suggest to choose the lesser of two evils and head over to el sombrero (colloquially known as The Hat). Otherwise you'll find yourself with a terrible internal dissonance as you enjoy the fantastic authentic atmosphere and wallow in self pity over the horrifically bland food and unprecedentedly terrible service.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
