I'm one of those odd sods that grows disparaged by the bright lights near the interstate and will do anything to give a local joint a chance. To that end, I've stopped at Hi Way twice while out exploring our fair continent. Hi Way is a drive in, but with no rollerskating servers or window trays. The big canopy is still there, providing much needed shade in the summer or shelter from the snow in winter. Ordering is done from a little window inside the entry, and there is seating available both inside and outside. I've only had standard road-food fare - mushroom and swiss burger, fries, and coleslaw. Burger would have been far better with a toasted bun but was otherwise great - good ratio of bun/meat/toppings. They asked if I wanted seasoning on my fries, to which I said yes. It was simply salt and pepper, I can't imagine why someone would say no. Good, nonetheless. But the coleslaw. Sweet, vinegary, peppery magical cabbage. Not a great idea for a to-go order, but steer with your knees, US 52 is straight enough :). They offer many flavors of ice cream, which I foolishly did not try. Next time I'm on my way to Canada to fish, I'm stopping for a sample.
