What, is Bismarck the sushi capital of the world?!?!? Probably not, but Kobe's Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar is the second restaurant I've found in Bismarck with outstanding sashimi. A big thanks to my waiter for suggesting the mushroom soup over the miso. The mushroom soup had a miso taste, but had very thinly sliced mushrooms, maybe three, and the pièce de résistance, fried onions. These slightly crunchy bits of deliciousness were so good that I had to ask what were they. It was such a simple touch, but what a difference it made. Miso soup never seems outstanding to me. This mushroom soup, however, was. Next came the sashimi dinner - three pieces each of five different fish. Well, four fish and octopus. I like octopus just fine and this particular octopus was just that... fine. It was good and not too terribly chewy. I'll just say the other four fish were of a great and fresh quality. I would have preferred a fifth fish to the octopus. And I do apologize, but here I fall short. As much as I love sashimi, I do not know my fish. The salmon was wonderful. The dark red tuna, which I know is a sashimi staple and a lower quality tuna, was okay. It's just not my favorite. And the two best, most incredible, delicious and melt in my mouth sashimi were.... mystery fish!!! The best was very stark white and had a slightly salty taste. When chewing, it sort of melts into a watery deliciousness. The other was a small cut, slightly grey fish. I think it might have been a better cut of tuna. I really should have asked. I enjoyed the ambience, though I'll admit when eating alone ambience is less important. I think ambience is something best shared with your sweetheart sitting across from you.

I went here with a friend at his recommendation. The menu was large, with a wide variety of standard rolls, specialty rolls, sashimi, and appetizers. We ordered three specialty rolls to share and a cocktail apiece. The food was prepared quickly and brought to our table by a friendly and capable waitress. The food was flavorful, the fish tasted fresh, and the portions were adequate. I'm always a little hesitant to go out for fish in landlocked states, but it was good and satisfied my sushi craving. The other half of the restaurant offers hibachi style cooking to those that are interested. It's never really been my thing, but it should be noted that it did attract a large mass of people, always a selling point. I can't give this place 5 stars simply because I think the prices for the area are above what I would expect. Certainly, we've probably all had amazing sushi somewhere on either coastline, but I'd say give this place a try--they're good at what they do.

My husband and I were driving through Bismarck and decided to stop in for lunch. Tri was kind enough to take care of us and did a wonderful job. The food , atmosphere, and service exceeded our expectations.

Quite tasty! *thumbs up* I quickly learned that Bismarck is not known for its cuisine, especially ETHNIC cuisine, but Kobe's is a pretty good Japanese hibachi restaurant (think Benihana but with less asian people actually working there, haha). You really can't go wrong with some onion soup, salad, hibachi chicken/steak/lobster/shrimp, noodles (yes, they have noodles!), and vegetables. Plus, the dipping sauces are super tasty. And let's not forget the seemingly endless sake that the chef tosses into your mouth during random spurts. If you get here and have a wait, I highly recommend the bar. Try the Moscow Mule. It's really good here and is actually served in the traditional Moscow Mule mug. Just like most hibachi restaurants, you sit communal style around the grill. This gives you a chance to be social (which my boyfriend likes) or anti-social (insert social boyfriend to do all the talking). In this area, it seems like most of the regulars are oil field workers, which always makes for fun and interesting dinner conversations. Prices are pretty comparable with other hibachi restaurants, which is probably pretty pricey for Bismarck. But, it's worth it.

Not bad... I've been in North Dakota for a few weeks for work. We're working in a really small town so all I've been eating is "beige food." You know, cereal, bread, yogurt, chicken, etc. The whole time I've been here, I've been craving Korean food (my default), Thai, sushi, Indian, even Olive Garden would be a godsend at this point. So, on an errand run "to town," (that's what my coworkers and I have started referring to Bismarck as), I popped into the only sushi place that popped up on my yelp app. I was there for lunch so I did the lunch special with two rolls - spicy yellowtail and white tuna. The rolls were decent, nothing to write home about, though they did hit the spot. The fish was lacking a bit, but then again, I'm used to some really good food in the east (we're spoiled). The miso soup stock was decent but the little cubes of tofu were really sour. I'm Korean and I grew up on tofu so I know that sour tofu means it's gone bad. I didn't want to stir up any trouble so I just pushed it aside. The staff were nice and friendly enough and prices were decent. My lunch special only set me back about $11 including the tip.

Great place for lunch! Got a beno box with chicken, sushi, salad, rice, wantons and another kind of chicken. All this for $8! Service was really quick and attentive. It also looks like you could do hibachi grills as well which are always a lot of fun. It's tucked into a shopping mall so it's a little harder to find but its well worth it. I would recommend the teriyaki chicken since it was excellent

Thee best sushi in town! Not only does this place have great atmosphere and great food, they also have a fun and caring staff. They never let me down when it comes to the Hibachi grill. The sushi is to die for. Every dish has its own 'flare'. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Thanks, Greg

This was my second time dining at Kobe and this time, I gave almost everything on the menu a whirl. As I walked in, I was greeted by a modern, inviting, and vibrant space. I was happy to be surrounded by laughter and merriment, which is always a good sign of a thriving business. "Yay! I'm a fan." of the vegetable gyoza, Spicy Girl sushi roll, and seafood miso. The tosa tofu, salmon toro tartar, and ikura was "A-ok". The amount of coconut in the chicken edamame soup was "Meh, I've experienced better.", but I was satisfied with all of the other choices. Despite being stuffed to the brim, we ended up ordering the Emperor's Deluxe (shrimp, steak, scallops, and chicken) teppanyaki AND the mochi dessert. A splendid way to end a pleasant dining experience! Finally, Bismarck is jumping on the international cuisine band wagon and opening their doors to new tastes and cultural food experiences!

Bartender is the best, always nice and friendly. The food had never let us down - if you are looking for sushi in Bismarck, this is the place!

Based solely on the teppanyaki lunch. While in Mandan from San Diego for a family wedding, the bride and us bridesmaids took a nice lunch break at Kobe's during our last minute errand day. Itadakimasu: - Teppanyaki Lunch from Kitchen - Scallops - Philadelphia Roll - Salmon Roll Kobe's looks like it's pretty new and is quite a large space. On a Friday around noon there was plenty of seating for our party of six. Just a note: the bride has Celiac and the service staff at Kobe's was extremely accommodating. They prepared her food in the back kitchen instead of the hibachi to ensure that her food was completely gluten-free. Five of the six of us ordered the teppanyaki lunch. I must say, for the price you will be full. The teppanyaki lunch comes with soup, fried rice, and vegetables. I chose the scallops, which were cooked perfectly by our super awesome chef. In general, everyone seemed pretty happy with what they ordered, especially the bride, and really that's all that mattered. A few random sushi rolls were ordered, as I got the bride hooked on sushi when she came to visit me in California in 2004. The rolls we ordered were pretty standard, salmon roll and Philadelphia roll; the fish seemed fresh enough. Service here was great. The staff was very helpful with catering to our gluten-free members. Everyone was very nice and relatively attentive. Our chef was awesome: he sang songs, made us laugh, and cooked tasty food. Overall, Kobe's was pretty tasty. Although, I've only been to Bismarck all of two times in my life, considering how last time I was there the only place we could get "Asian" food was at some buffet that had what could only be described as sub-par Panda Express, Kobe's is quite a step up for Bismarck in the Asian restaurant market.

Our whole family attended the show at Kobe's tonight and it was great. We had four different sushi dishes and each had a different main dish. It was all cooked to perfection and with a fun and light hearted approach. My 7 & 8 year old absolutely loved it and devoured the sushi. We all sat at the grill to get the experience and will be doing it again

we were on a road trip from California and this place seemed to have the best reviews. yuck. Unlike most Japanese restaurants in this country where you can usually order a combination of things, like tempura and sashimi, etc. not here. the yaki soba tasted like bad Chinese takeout and the salmon teriyaki was totally ordinary. The tuna sashimi appetizer was clearly not made from fresh fish. It will be awhile before I can face another Japanese meal after this experience.

Miso soup came out cold. Sashimi was fresh. Pretty mediocre compared to other sushi restaurant. But seeing as how it is the ONLY sushi restaurant in Bismark ND. I guess it's alright. They don't have specialty sushi such as fatty tuna or sea urchin. Service was excellent. Would come back again.

This was my second time eating at Kobe's, and they haven't disappointed yet. Good quality fresh fish, interesting rolls, and a nice atmosphere inside. The mango sauce wasn't as impressive as at Oahu, but flavors were still excellent. I tried the Hawaiian roll tonight and loved it. They took me a touch too literally on my request for extra soy sauce, though, and gave me a tub of soy as big and full as my miso soup!

Worst meal ever. Got good service at the bar. When we were seated at our table it took over an hour to get our meal. No one stopped at our table to explain why it was taking so long. Finally got our meals and they were cold. By then we just wanted to eat and go home. Will never eat there again. If there was a negative they would get that because they don't deserve even 1 star.

Great food and reasonably priced. What I like the most about this place is that it adds variety to the Bismarck/Mandan food scene and it does it well. I have only been there for lunch and will keep coming back.

I really enjoy Kobe's!. Generally, I normally sit at tables but I know there's the option to sit at the grill as well. There's always a tea light candle at the table which really creates a cute atmosphere. I ordered a fruity drink last time I was there and it came in an adorable tiki cup. The service has been pretty good, and the food comes really fast! I love the miso soup - it's always steaming hot and is only $2 for a cup. I have tried two appetizers, the vegetable gyoza and tosa tofu and both were super nom! The tofu is crispy on the outside and super soft in the inside and the seasoning is great. My favorite order is the vegetarian rolls - and for two rolls it's only $10 after 3:00pm. It's a great deal!

If you like sushi, it is a good place. A louder place, with sometimes a wait to get a booth/seat for the sushi side. Recommend for this place for sushi

I was definitely skeptical of trying a sushi place in North Dakota but was pleasantly surprised! We ordered a few appetizers and some sushi rolls and everything was delicious. The rice consistency was nice - not too soft and not too sweet. The service that day was okay - it wasn't a busy time at the restaurant and our server kept disappearing for extended periods of time.

Love sitting at the grill but not all of the chefs are entertaining. Pretty good martinis as well. I haven't tried their sushi yet.

We love Kobe's, when we lived in Bismarck we went frequently. We've sat in the dining room and at the grill, never left disappointed! The service has always been really good.

Also, why is it that after about 5 visits, we had to hear from friends about Kobe's VIP reward card? It's not mentioned on the table tent, nor did any server ever mention it to us.

YUMMY! Spent $70 for lunch with a friend. I'm a sushi fan too! Definitely a place to stop and eat!

I love sushi!! This place probably has what you are looking for, whether traditional or more modern sushi rolls. The specialty rolls are very creative but they also have the basics. Several good appetizers as well. I was happy with the vegetarian roll selection. I haven't eaten at the grill but I have heard good things as well. Take-out is easy and fast too!

My personal favorite place to eat in Bismarck. Great food, great drinks and great service. The only downfall is no changing station for the little ones. Otherwise love this place!

Great sushi. Had the Dragon Roll and the old faithful California Roll. I've eaten at a few different Kobe's and they are very reliable when I crave a little raw fish. I haven't tried the hibachi tables yet??? They look fun. Maybe next visit.
