Wonderful spot for Mediterranean food! The kafta is delicious and highly recommended. Reasonable prices- not cheap but won't break the bank either. Stop in for lunch or dinner!

Visited last week with a larger group and Mooney's couldn't have been more accommodating. They had the tables already together when we arrived and water at each seat. Our waitress was efficient and helpful in explanations and recommendations. I ended up ordering the Jezebel, which was a chicken pita with a very tasty dressing, swiss cheese, slaw and a small splash of sriracha. It was very tasty and came with a large, piping hot order of crispy french fries. My partner in crime ordered the Tripoli chicken salad, which featured deliciously seasoned chicken with cous cous and feta over lettuce. It was all tossed in a mild lemon olive oil dressing and was a fantastic combination. Only disappointing factor was the drink selection - Wednesday is advertised on their website as $3 NC beer. Normally, I would consider this to be the plural "beer" but they only had one available! That was a bit of a bummer, but I understand that running out can certainly happen. Either way, I look forward to visiting again next time I'm in downtown Winston!

Fast and friendly service and the best damn falafel in the triad area. Crispy, hot, and perfectly portioned, their falafel sandwich is my go-to every time. I recommend putting your fries in the pita too! The fries can stand alone, though: thick and chunky and clearly part of a potato. Would definitely recommend coming here on a date and sitting outside to eat and people-watch! They are also family friendly! Sometimes there is a bit of a wait.

We were in the Hanes Mall area, looking for a Greek menu restaurant. The one we typically go to changed some of their menu and food had just become greasy and bland. We found Mooney's and although it was in the opposite direction we wanted to go, it only took us 10 minutes to get there. It is on a corner in a building with great architecture. The cafe menu is chalkboard style but very easy to read, menu items grouped together in a way that is understandable and the decor was contemporary masculine with a real cozy feel. The restaurant was also very clean, which is automatically one more star for me! I ordered a sample mezza platter with my 4 choices of baba ghanouj, falafel, mousaka and lentil soup. The fellow who took our orders was very knowledgable, and was able to answer very specific questions I asked about the menu. No, the baba ghanouj did not have yogurt, yes all vegetarian menu items were vegan and everything in their menu is gluten-free! The mousaka was spicy but not too spicy, it was so good that I scarfed it down before I realized I forgot to take a picture of it, haha! The falafel was crisp, not greasy and I strange after taste like I have experienced in so many Mediterranean restaurants. The baba ghanouj was so creamy and delightful that I ordered a large container to take home with me so I could enjoy it all week! It will be tough to keep my teens hands out of it! And the lentil soup was seasoned just right. Although a small street corner cafe, I will seek out the opportunity to eat here every chance I am in town, well done, Mooney's! ** Posted pic of empty bowl was previously filled with delicious mousaka, not baba ghanouj!

I have some favorite Mediterranean restaurants all over the US that I have discovered during my work travels so I am pretty picky when it comes to my favorite meal at this type of place. I usually get fattoush and lentil soup which is what I got here. The fattoush salad was missing the usual pita pieces in the salad which, if you look up on Wikipedia, is the entire base of this type of salad. Also it was lacking sumac another staple of a fattoush salad. So basically this was just a salad with herb dressing. So I was disappointed that the salad was masquerading as fattoush. The lentil soup was good but not necessarily Mediterranean since it had a slight curry flavor. It would have also been a nice touch if the soup was served with a few slices of pita. The staff were nice but busy and hard to flag down to get the check. Overall food was "ok". Definitely have had much better, but I like that they have lots of vegetarian options and if you don't know true Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean cuisine then this is a pretty good.

Excellent food, great city location, friendly staff... Cold beer.... Even a Pilsner from Lebanon

I am a sucker for Middle Eastern food. Unfortunately, Winston only has this one place, but it is an okay place! I believe it is Lebanese-owned, but could be mistaken. It's worth checking out for sure. I had the falafel pita and it was satisfactory. The falafel tasted fresh, and the pickled beets added a nice tangyness. The hummus on the side was good, but had a little too much oil for my taste. The coolest part about this place is that they sell a Lebanese pilsner! It was very light and bubbly and was overall a good beer choice. The waiter seemed new and was a bit awkward, but his service was good. He forgot my beer at first, but he made up for it by being super attentive the rest of the time. A for effort. The one thing I didn't like was that the décor was not authentic at all. I'm used to Middle Eastern restaurants with tapestries, Persian rugs, and people smoking hookah. It didn't feel like a true Middle Eastern dining experience to me, but since we are in Downtown Winston, I guess it'll have to do!

Went here for lunch and had a really great shawarma pita wrap. The menu is really extensive and I wish I had tried more things on the menu. I'd definitely recommend going for lunch and sitting outside when it's nice out- it's on a quieter portion of 4th street downtown.

  • Karen F.

Stopped here for a lunch to go and was so glad I did. The falafel Pita was perfect. The couscous was pleasant and the service was great! The price was also really good. Under $11 definitely recommending this medetaranian gem.

Mooney's is one of my favorite places to eat on 4th street. It is further up but worth the walk. They kept the original tile from the building which adds a ton of character. It does get loud on busy nights but the service is always good. Their prices are also really reasonable. I like their shawarma but on this visit I had the Tawook which is chicken. It was served over couscous and eggplant stew. The chicken was seasoned and cooked with a nice crust. It was very tender. The eggplant stew (forgot the name) was rich but add a little too much cinnamon for my taste. The couscous was light, fresh, and mixed with yummy feta cheese. When you had a bite with all three Items it was a really good bite. My husband enjoyed the lamb burger with fries. I tried the tzaziki sauce and it was delicious. The burger was very juicy and flavorful. They have a lot of vegitarian options and Mooney's is a great value for the money.

Mooney's has the best hummus! It is perfectly creamy, not too garlicky, and tastes fabulous on their falafel. My only complaint is that I haven't been able to recreate it at home. I always get the sampler plate with the hummus, falafel, baba ghanoush and fried cauliflower, but all the Mezza dishes are wonderful. I tasted a new tempeh dish last night called St. Francis of Assisi that I'll order next time! My meat-eating friends say that the dishes with local-raised beef are also tasty. This is my favorite restaurant in the Piedmont, and 2nd favorite in the world.

  • Holly K.

To be honest I was a little disappointed in Mooney's! I went with the shawarma over hummus and maybe I just picked the wrong dish! The price was a little steep to me for the size of the plate at $13. The hummus was really good but the shawarma was really really chewy and tough. I have had shawarma at other places that was much more flavorful and easy to eat. The bf tells me the falafel is really good here so I do want to go back and try out other offerings, just now the shawarma. Maybe they were just having an off day! I will be back to try out some other offerings.

Far and away my favorite lunch spot in downtown Winston! The food is great--I recommend the shwarma pita, the tawook pita, and the mezza plate (falafel, jeweled couscous, hummus, and fettoush). The platters are delicious as well, but a little more expensive than what I'm looking to spend at lunch. The only thing I've ever had here that I wouldn't order again is the gyro (just found it underwhelming compared to everything else I've tried here). I always add a side of tzatiki sauce, because it's tasty, and I don't think they've ever charged me for it. Also, the staff is so friendly--several know me by name, which is a small gesture that goes a long way when you frequent a place about once a week. Love me some Mooney's!

Mooney's has absolutely delicious Mediterranean food. I've probably been there 30 times and tried most everything on their menu. I grew up eating this food, lived in big cities with many Lebanese/Mediterranean restaurants, and this place is right up there with the best of them. Yes, the setting is nice but on the casual side. So go knowing that. The wait staff are super friendly but might be a little slow sometimes. I'd say just chill out, and enjoy the great food!

  • Josh M.

This place was like a oasis in the otherwise dry desert of food options in the neighborhood. Though we were only in this fine city for a short while, we found ourselves up against bar food or burgers. Mooney's saved the day. The appetizer platter was awesome. We actually ordered one as a dish and one to share with everyone else. There were enough options that each platter was different and each of the components were tasty. Highly recommend you checking this place out. The food was tasty, the staff were amazing and the prices were reasonable.

I enjoy going to Mooney's for lunch. Everything I've tried from their menu has been great. I even did a large lunch order for our work group and they were able to get our order processed fast and put each person's name on their order. Super organized and friendly. Great falafels, lamb burgers and hummus!

Great falafel, but the hummus leaves a bit to be desired. I like the selection of local beers, and the food is good.

  • John H.

Falafel is all you ever need at this place. It's very good, and the service is always excellent. Pretty much the only place in Winston Salem where you will find great falafel, really. Not much for atmosphere, but who cares, the food is awesome. Great for a lunch date. However, only downside is that parking can be a bit frustrating. Winston Salem's downtown doesn't make it that much of an inconvenience, but don't expect to not having to look around a little.

Only eaten here once. Casual place, solidly good food, very nice staff, I had the shawarma platter and tripoli salad, both good, they pay attention to the details, will go here again if I'm in town

I just visited Mooney's for the first time! I thought it was great. Our food was fresh and quick. I was a little confused when I first arrived and sat down at the first table I saw, but it appears at dinner I should have waited to be seated. I ordered the Chicken Pita and Baba Ghanoush. Both were delicious. My only complaint was that the Chicken Pita just felt like it had a tossed salad in it, not really toppings. All of the employees were extremely nice and attentive. I cant wait to go back!

I liked Mooney's but wasn't blown away! It was a really nice night when we went so we decided to sit outside. My friends and I decided to split the hummus with pita for an appetizer and that was really good. I had never really had hummus in a restaurant before so it was something new and tasted really fresh. For my main dish I got the falafel burger. I liked it but after a while I kind of got sick of it- there were four huge pieces in the burger and I think it may have been a touch too dry and could have used some more of the garlic mayo that came on it. Or at least something to balance it out a bit. Overall it was good though! One of my friends got a shawarma dish that I tasted and it was delicious! Had so much flavor to it. On the service side of things- our server was very friendly but somewhat slow. Took a while to refill waters, etc. Also at one point my friend asked for an extra fork & knife set and it must have taken him almost 10 minutes that she just ended up getting up herself and getting one. I think I'll definitely be back to give Mooney's another try and maybe branch out and get something more adventurous.

Considering that this is the ONLY Mediterranean place in town that I know of, I am basing this comment on Winston standards. Overall it's a great establishment. It's clean, fairly simple, family portraits on the wall, decent atmosphere. I recommend sitting on the outside during warmer days. It's great to be in the heart of downtown Winston and enjoying a hearty meal. The portions are a bit small here, and authenticity wise, I came here with a Lebanese person and he thought that the palette is definitely Americanized. With that in mind, if you do not care to have the most authentic food experience but is just looking for a quality meal with good ingredients, this is it! Great flavors, makes my taste buds go wild!

The worst Mediterranean food I've ever eaten...it's a shame there aren't other options in Winston. Ingredients are okay (e.g., well seasoned and cooked chicken, decent falafel), but overall the food isn't great. The service was awful both times I ate here, too.

Very tasty and lots of selection for gluten free living. The waiter even offered to substitute a side of veggies vs. pita. I was so grateful for that kindness.

Finally got to Mooney's to try some traditional Mediterranean food. The food was fresh and delicious. The Falafel was great and beautiful. Great lentil soup and the fried cauliflower was the best. Sidewalk dining was great too!

I went to Mooney's with several friends who frequent there and know the owner. The place is very clean and the atmosphere is pleasant. I love the color layers and the family photos on the wall. You can tell right off the bat that it's family owned. The menu was nice. Not too many choices but just enough to please anyone. It's obvious that the food is fresh and good quality. I read that they get most of the ingredients from local vendors which is very cool. I'm not on that side of Winston much but if I have a craving or am on that side of town...I'll definitely be stopping in. Great place.

So...... Mooney's was ok. I'm disappointed. The decor is basic and the service was ok. You basically have to serve yourself outside of them bringing your food. You have to get your own silverware also. I ordered the sampler, which was good. But I've had much better. I ordered and paid for coffee and never got it. When I asked, I was told that they didn't have any more. Yes I was reimbursed but how do you Not know what you have prepared before taking payment for it? Then I asked for some baklava and they were out. Just disappointing. I'm indecisive about whether or not I'll go back.

First visit: "Let me get a gyro." "You don't want a gyro." "I don't?" "Don't get me wrong - our gyro's good, but it's no different from what you'd get anywhere else. How 'bout some shawarma? Kafta?" "But I really wanted a gyro." "No. You want shawarma." "I want shawarma?" "One shawarma! Here, take this card. Five meals and you get one free." Second visit: "I'll have the gyro." "Gyro? No, you don't want a gyro." "Again?" "Try the tawook." "Tawook?" "You want the tawook?" "No. I want the gyro." "But it's just a gyro. There's nothing special about it." "But I'm craving a gyro." "Have the kafta kabobs." "Really?" "See... You don't want the gyro." "I don't want the gyro..." "One kafta pita! Do you have your card?" "Crap. Forgot it." "It's OK. Have another and bring them both next time." Third visit: "Don't even start with me, man. I want a gyro and I'm getting a gyro." "Are you sure? It's Tuesday. Every Tuesday we have falafel with pita, $3." "What's this tarator that's served with it?" "That's just our tahini sauce." "Three dollars?" "One falafel pita! Punch card?" "Damn it. I have two and they're both back at the office." "It's OK. I'll give you another." Fourth visit: "I know. I know. It's Tuesday. Gimme the falafel." "You don't want the gyro?" Twelfth visit: "Funny seeing you when it's not Tuesday." "I'm here for the gyro." "Listen, try the tawook. Trust me. Our gyro, it's good, but tawook is better." "These aren't the droids I'm looking for?" "One tawook! Have your punch card?" "I don't know why you even bother asking anymore. I have a stack of them in my desk drawer." "OK. Next time bring them all." ======= I previously worked a few blocks from here, so it became my usual Tuesday lunch spot. Excellent Lebanese and regional fare. But I can't tell you anything about the gyro, because I've still never had one. I'm beginning to suspect they don't even sell it. Overall, 8/10.

The food was really good and, dare I say it, cheap for the price! I think we walked out of there paying maybe $25 bucks with tip and it was WELL WORTH IT. (We had water!) The hummus was DELISH!! I can never go back to the store stuff after eating it. It had the right blend of tangy & tart and just a hint of hearty. The baba was incredibly flavorful and the salad was fresh and really vibrant in color. (Which is awesome for a salad trust me!) The only reason why I can't give it five stars was because although it was really good. It wasn't blow me away, five star, awesome, can't live without it, good. I don't know what it needs to be that but it needs a little umph ya know? Then, THEN my friends it would be a five star joint. Maybe I'm being a bit picky, but DEFINITELY eat here if you have an opportunity your pocket book and your stomach will love you! :)

Love Mooney's. Sometimes the falafel are massive, bigger than golf balls. That can be a good thing (or a bad thing) depending on your perspective. The food is legit. The location is great, and they have outdoor seating for a handful. Go to Mooney's to get your falafel/hummus fix. For that matter, it's the ONLY place in town.

We had a hankering for Mediterranean cuisine this week and decided to give Mooney's another try. This time, I had the Falafel plate and my wife had the Tawook Pita. We split an Mezza sampler plate. The falafel was quite tasty, as were the pickled turnips. The hummus was fantastic and I loved that they served the meal with plenty of pita to load up hummus. The falafel though just seemed a bit off. It was very tasty, but not nearly what I would call authentic. It almost tasted like the falafels were breaded with hushpuppy mix - a little too sweet for my tastes. My wife enjoyed her Tawook Pita tremendously. With our Mezza sampler plate, we chose to get a lentil soup. I'm a big fan of lentils - I eat them several times a week in various shapes and forms and we were looking forward to the lentil soup. Unfortunately, we were let down - for there were only about 20 lentils total in the cup of lentil soup. Add to this that the soup was virtually flavorless and it, unfortunately, cast a sad shadow over the rest of the meal which was passably four stars. I have mixed feelings about Mooney's - I really love Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food and I'm glad we have the option in Winston-Salem; I just think it could be executed better. Furthermore, what's up with the floor in the place? My shoes were literally sticking to the floor when I walked in. I realize it's an old building in downtown Winston-Salem, but could you at least mop the floors a couple of times a day? Or maybe a couple of times a week? I don't want my first impression walking into your restaurant to be my feet sticking to your disgusting floor. I can't, in good conscience, give Mooney's four stars, but I can give it three, which is one more than I originally gave it in my first review two and a half years go. We will give it another shot sometime in the future.

Huge fan of Mooneys! I live down the street and frequent this restaurant regularly. I love sitting outside in the summer and the staff is always friendly. Mooney, the owner always recognizes us and says Hi. Their hummus is some of the best I've ever had! Definitely recommend this place.

Loved it! Great granacha to go along with my sampler of fried cauliflower, hummus, tabouli, and couscous. Delicious baklava. Low key atmosphere. Visited on a Sat afternoon and it was relatively empty.

Four yelp stars for this review reflects: Food and ENTERTAINMENT! Last night was Tuesday and we did not know at about 7:00PM on Tuesdays they have Belly Dancing! Seriously! We did not know! Before making this trip I had decided where we would eat each meal, always with some latitude for spontaneity (I said "some"). We always ask the locals for recommendations. The locals said "go to Mooneys"! The Belly Dancing teacher arrived first, looking about 99 3/4 years of age I don't want to say she looked old, I told my friend I bet she is the entertainment. Walking with a cane (for a while) she went around talking to all the guests as her students arrived. She introduced her students I did not know if I should take photos and they are hard to shoot because they move fast and it is pretty dark in there. You can see I did manage a few photos so you can see what you missed! Two students danced and danced very well. Then it was time for the teacher to perform the finale. She danced her routine to: "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" On the Food! My very picky friend who will probably not review this place liked the food way better than I. Here is my take on all the food: Tabbouleh, good flavor, not enough: Garlic, Oil and Lemon 3.75 stars. Gyro had good not great flavor, needed more onion 3 stars. Tzatziki, good flavor, though to mild, needed more garlic and lemon 3.75 Stars, Baba Gahousjh way too much lemon 3.1 stars. The Fries were good 3.5 stars. The Root Beer was very good 4.5 stars and the service was excellent 5 yelp stars! The food here is better than many places and better than many Mediterranean Restaurants! No Arabian Coffee! NO Arabian Coffee! They Like Krankies! Second Visit 4-3 2012 Another Tuesday night! No Belly Dancing, though the food was better - Not Outstanding overall but close enough for 4 yelp stars! I LOVE good BEEF! The "Krankie Flankie" Steak flavored with Krankies Coffee was VERY Good! In yelp stars I'm giving it 4.79 stars! The Baba Ghanoujh was A-OK like in 3.29 stars The Couscous was uhhh, ummm 2.85 stars The new dish ________ made with Lentils and something with Onions on top was good though too bland for me! The Hummus was better than some, it needed more garlic for me! As last time the service was outstanding and our waiter had his work cut out for him this time - Two Crazy Guys and three Cameras (one Helmet Cam) - our waiter was very personable and handled us better than most could, he asked if I were writing a blog, I did not have to answer that question so HOPEFULLY he can see this and respond on yelp and let the few who do not know how EXTREME my friends and I can be! Still no Arabian Coffee!

Easily the worst falafel I've ever eaten. It clearly came from a mix AND there was a bug crawling on it. The fatoush was mediocre and lacked the delightful pita croutons that traditionally accompany it. Will not be returning.

I ordered the Chicken Salad Pita this time and liked it quite a bit more than the Schwarma Plate! It's tangy, healthy tasting, and a little expensive. For $6.50, I was hoping for something a little bit bigger (as it doesn't come with a side). If you don't mind the price, it's a pretty tasty and (possibly healthy) treat!

Please keep in mind, I've only been for lunch. I've never witnessed all this belly dancing and hookah madness that apparently takes place at dinner. If I can ever make it for this, I'll be sure to do a review update. To begin, I enjoy their gyros. They are greasy and messy, but what gyro isn't? I really like their hummus. The wife isn't so fond, but I like it. Their tabouli isn't my favorite (not as good as homemade, probably on par with Whole Foods), but I'll certainly go for it if I'm jonesing. Do remember that if you order any of the sort, make sure you specifically ask for pita as well. I've twice ordered hummus to go, got back to work, then realized that I was without toasted pita. It seems like ordering something along the lines of hummus or tabouli would imply the need for pita, but apparently not. It was quite frustrating. Strangely, I have to applaud them for their burgers. Keep in mind, I know you don't go to a Mediterranean restaurant for a burger, but there are a bunch of people who would't traditionally order the standard fare from Mooney's, so it is good that they have something a bit more "standard" for those less adventurous. I've been meaning to try their salad for some time, and I do agree with Susan. They look fantastic. Very colorful. Very fresh looking. Every time I see it, I want it. I just...haven't done it. Bottled beer and wine only here. I'm still not quite sure how Mooney's can pull off the top spot for nightlife in Winston-Salem when it only has bottled beer and wine. Just saying. Maybe when I experience it, I'll understand.

LOVED it! My husband and I were just passing through Winston Salem on our way home and we found Mooneys. It's close to the highway exits and wasn't fast food so we decided to stop for dinner. The food was excellent! Tabbouleh was very fresh, hummus was excellent. We both decided that we will be stopping at Mooneys every time on our long trips home!

A little pricier than some of the other Greek options in town but the ingredients feel fresh, healthy, and well made. Appetizer sampler is a great choice. One of my favorite weekend lunch spots to hit on my way to Krankies!

Came here on a Friday night, and for two ppl, there was about a fifteen minute wait. However, we also came when there was a big party of policemen. There was live music too, which was nice. I'm not sure if this is the standard in Winston, but again, there was no hostess stand or greeter here. You walk in.. And kind of stand around awkwardly until someone (the owner/who cares about the customer) notices you. Anyway. We ordered the sampler appetizer plate with tabouli, fried cauliflower, hummus, and baba ghanouj. Tasty. Small, but tasty. Flavors were good, everything tasted fresh. I ordered the gyro, and while I don't remember if it was fantastic, I don't recall any negative thoughts, so it couldn't have been that bad. My bf ordered a burger (don't remember the name, but it had feta in it), I believe, and he enjoyed that as well. I tried a bite, and I found the cheese to be overwhelming, but that may have been due to the fact that I was eating a completely different meal and my taste buds were off. A note on the service: While we were eating, I noticed another couple come into the restaurant. I watched the waiters/waitresses to see if anyone even paid attention to the door. The one waitress who was there and closest to the door AND noticed that customers had arrived, promptly turned around and chose to go into the kitchen instead of saying hi and greeting the customers. What??? The couple had to stand around awkwardly before another waiter came to greet them. Unbelievable. I'm not sure if the waitress was nervous about greeting customers or what, but I was disappointed in this. I believe a good restaurant generally makes their customers feel welcomed. However, our waiter was very friendly and kind, so that was not a problem. Overall, food was okay, average, nothing fantastic I'm dying to go have again. Service was good, but don't expect to be noticed upon arrival.

This was pretty good. Pretty funky setting and obviously undercapitalized, I'd go quick if you are looking for Greek food. It's good while it lasts.

Money's is fantastic for falafel, gyros, hummus and shwarma. Great service and a good price.

Wonderful place. Great service, excellent atomosphere with the downtown location. Admittly, I've only been once with an old GF of mine, but the one experience was terrific. Food was excellent as well.

Mooney's is one of my favorite places to eat in Winston. I'm somewhat of a regular, it's very convenient because I work downtown. The tawook is my favorite. They have good humus and I've liked everything I've tried on the menu. Good fresh food, nice family owned atmosphere, and a lot to love!

I think I went there three days in a row. Definitely great for a vegan! I called to place an order with no idea what I wanted. The woman I spoke with was very friendly and helpful, despite how busy they get at lunchtime. I got the vegetarian pita and added falafel to it - DELICIOUS! Also, they had homemade stuffed *chard* leaves (instead of grape leaves) which were great. (The texture almost scared me off, but the flavor was amazing.) They've always been very, very friendly and accommodating, and the food is above reproach.

Truly delicious falafel. I am quite partial to Greensboro's Zaytoon, bt Mooney's definitely satisfies my Winston-Salem Mediteranean cravings.

what a unique offerring for winston-salem! Authentic Lebanese dishes. Make sure to ask about off the menu specials. I'm a relatively new Vegan, and almost half the menu can be altered to meet my fairly stringent requirements (its a health issue, not an ethical one). Last visit we had a vegetarian mousaka and an incredible tempeh and grilled veggie pita wrap. Unbelievable!!! I'm a true carnivore at heart, and they made my vegan restriction no restriction at all! Will be a regular here! note: this appears to be a popular place for larger groups to come since they can easilly pull tables together and seat a group of 10-15. Whoa be it to the dining guest that comes in behind such a group though. We had a 50 minute wait for our meal......though it was well worth it!

Mooney's is really good Mediterranean food. Actually, to be precise, it's Lebanese, and Mooney isn't trying too hard to make his place just like any other basic Mediterranean joint. I've sampled lots of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare (in the U.S. only, admittedly), and Mooney's stands apart as just a tad different from anything I've had. I've eaten at Mooney's twice now and had the falafel sandwich and several of the vegetarian side dishes. Almost everything has been distinctive and ranged from good to great. Before I get to the great unique stuff, though, I have to say that I did not enjoy the falafel at all. I don't know if it's because they use fava beans as well as the traditional garbanzos, but the fried balls were pasty and lacked flavor and spice. The most interesting thing about the falafel sandwich was the pickle they put in it - I think it may be a pickled turnip. Pretty groovy. What I recommend (especially for vegetarians/vegans) is the sampler, where you choose 4 side items for $7 or $8, things such as: hummus, baba ganouj, mousaka, falafel, a rice & lentils dish, a couscous pilaf, etc. There are 8-10 choices. My favorites so far are the mousaka (this is extremely delicious, if rather oily - a tomatoey-oniony-chickpea family recipe), the hummus (perfect texture), and the baba ganouj (very very nice roasted flavor). Also you can bet the soup of the day will be good (lentil and spinach on the first day I was there - mmm), and the arugula & beet salad is tangy and sharp! For your sweet craving, the baklava is made in-house. They offer pistachio & walnut, and Mooney recommended the pistachio, but I liked the walnut more. They also have burgers and chicken wings, so you can bring your "I ain't eatin' no damn Mediterranean food" friends. Definitely check this place out. It's great for a low-key lunch or dinner. The owners and employees are really friendly.

This is pretty good Mediterranean food. I had Tawook pita wrap to try something different and was satisfied. We sat outside at their street side tables and enjoyed the lovely spring day. To supplement we back for their pita and hummus, and that hit the spot. The prices are quite reasonable. My only real complaint is that it took a little longer than I guessed for our food to come.

Good god! They now have organic Tempeh that you can get in wrap or on top of a salad. Its served with marinated/grilled mushrooms and tahini. I can't get enough. I need an intervention, but its soooooo GOOD!!!!

I adore Mooney's. In fact, although I wished they delivered to the downtown area, maybe it's best they don't for now because I'm sure I'd be eating there every day. As a vegan, I love all the options and pretty much always get the Sampler Plate with falafals, fried cauliflower, baba ganoush and hummus. For dinner I stopped by on my way home and got a big container of baba ganoush, hummus and extra pita to eat for dinner. I Love Mooney's!

Awesome! The man behind the counter was super friendly and helpful. It just so happened that I was going through a major chickpea craving when I ate here. The most exciting thing was the falafel, from scratch, no wheat flour filler.

Mooneys is awesome, I have only been there for lunch but each time is surprises me how good it is and how satisfied I feel when I leave. First my partner is a Vegan and they have plenty of options for her which from what I understand is somewhat of a rarity in Winston Salem. O sometimes try hers and the Vegan meals are really tasty. The vibe is cool and feels more like a big city feel. The staff is nice and has been consistent there since I have been going. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone eating downtown. The prices are good and the food is original and delicious.

Best items on the menu: tawook sandwhich, jezebel sandwhich and the baba ghanoush. I live in California now but was a weekly regular at Mooney's when I resided in Winston-Salem. The food is excellent and the staff- especially Mooney and cook, Kyle, are awesome guys! Havent found Lebanese food in the OC that even compares.

This place is awesome. You may have to wait a few minutes for your food, but it's all made from scratch with wholesome ingredients! (NOTE: gyro is the not made in house, and from what i'm told, is the only thing on the menu that isn't very good.) I love this place and eat there every chance i get!

Mooney's is definitely my favorite lunch spot in Winston. Mooney's has great food served quickly with great mediterranean favorites such as grape leaves. I LOVE GRAPE LEAVES! Mooney's is welcoming, laid back, and affordable.

Dude. The falafel burger. I would request it as my last meal. So. Damn. Good. Like slap yo' granny good. The staff is awesome and cheery. The other things I have had here have been great too. I usually stop in after a visit to Liberty Tattoo.

I was in Winston-Salem on business last week and had lunch at Mooney's. What a delicious meal! Seriously, the best lunch I had all week. the feel is very relaxed and family run. in a cute corner spot along 4th street. i had a chicken pita wrap and my fellow diners both had gyros. we were all stuffed and very satisfied! i wish we had tried Mooney's earlier in the week as I probably would have gone back again. perhaps on my next work trip back to scenic winston-salem.

Stopped in for lunch around 2pm and it was empty. The guy working the register was very helpful, and when I got my food it was DELICIOUS! This is some of the best Mediterranean style food I have had, and I have eaten plenty in places like NYC, Boston, and Chicago. I am vegetarian and had a filling lunch with hummus, tabouli, a lentil dish that was a special that day, and falafal. I did not buy a beer, but they had a superb (though bottled) beer selection. I plan on returning soon.

The hummous and baba are fabulous - that's all that matters! Seriously, I've lived in Chicago and Detroit so I've been to the mecca of middle east cuisines - so its hard for me to give it four or five stars. However, this is great and if you compare it to other middle east restaurants in winston salem - by far the best. Clean, good atmosphere, quick, friendly staff. I always look forward to eating here.

Good, honest Mediterranean food. It was fresh, quick and tasty. I had no meat so can't comment on Tawook and Shawarma but hummus and baba were pretty good. Owner served me himself. Would go there again to try out other dishes.

The main problem with this restaurant is the service. S.L.O.O.O.O.O.O.W!!! There were two servers and 4-6 tables of people, inside and out. They didn't seem to have a good handle on how to expedite. We ordered an appetizer sampler. For $8.50 we expected WAY more food. It was barely enough for one person. Then there wasn't enough bread for everything on the plate. We asked for more bread and the server asked how much more we needed. Umm... enough to finish this teeny tiny plate??? Fried cauliflower = not good. The tabouli was good. Hummus was good. Baba ghanoush was good. We were there 5 or 6 minutes before we got our drinks-- water & tea, half an hour before we got our appetizer. Why??? And he didn't take our order when he dropped off the appetizer, just disappeared for another 5-10 minutes. Once he finally took our order, we sat there another half hour before we got our food. This was the time I asked for bread again. He finally brought it 20-25 minutes after the first request. Really??? My gyro was pretty good. My friend said her shawarma was good. Two other people got falafel and enjoyed it. I really wish there had been better service and a larger appetizer.

Delicious tawooks! If you haven't been to Mooney's, you seriously need to go. Their food is great, the location is great, and the staff is friendly, including the owner. I love the restaurant's decor, as well. Go. You won't regret it.

Now that I'm not in Chapel Hill this summer, I've been having severe Med Deli withdrawal. But this place just might be better. Their hummus and baba ganoush stands up to any other restaurant I've been to, and they do a great job of offering things you don't always find elsewhere (their pitas come with real grilled vegetables, which are way too hard to find for some reason.) And it's reasonably priced, a definite plus amid downtown Winston-Salem's mostly overpriced restaurants.
