Alright, so the concept is excellent, it's downtown, it's got outdoor seating and adds to the ambiance of New Raleigh. That being said, I didn't really think that the dogs lived up to the promising descriptions and catchy names. Don't get me wrong, they're good, but I can only assume that they can be better. The fries are excellent, and the beer is local, so it's an overall win for me.

We decided to try Tasty 8's at 8pm on a Saturday night. It was fun to get downtown to a new place and not have to wait in any lines. It's fun and new but, not many people choose hot dogs for their 8pm dinners downtown - it was refreshing not to have to wait. It was also nice to spend a little under $20 for the two of us too. We enjoyed our time at Tasty's 8's and will defnitely be back. We both ordered the $8.88 combo which includes one hot dog, one bag of fries, one of their gourmet dipping sauces and a fountain drink. I chose the El Perro dog and my husband ordered the Yo Adrian. The El Perro had a Jalapeno Cheddar Buffalo Brat with queso, guac, Mexican crema, salsa and jalapenos. It had a little kick to it but, it's definitely not as spicy as it might sound. I definitely felt as though I had the better dog of the two that we ordered. The Yo Adrian had cheesesteak meat on top of the hot dog with cheese above and below. It's just not my thing - so I probably won't order it ever. I do hope to try the Windy City dog on my next trip though. Fry wise, we both got the traditional fries. The star of the show were the dipping sauces. They have quite a few to choose from. I am typically a ranch dressing french fry dipper so, I didn't stray too far from that - I ordered the Jalapeno ranch. This was actually the spicier than my hot dog. It also had a bit of a lime flavor to it too. My husband asked the clerk for his recommendations and he suggested the Dijon Aioli. That sauce hit the mark - I will definitely order it next time. It's not overly mustardy at all. It just has a great flavor that pairs well with the fries. Next time, we hope to try a milkshake. Unfortunately, they were sold out. Great job Tasty 8's - a great way to get downtown on a weekend night, not spend a fortune and not have a long line to dine. Our service was great and I enjoyed the ambience and branding too. Oh - they also have a nice selection of local microbrews on draft too.

I was at a business function recently one weekday evening and realized I was close to Tasty 8's, so I decided to check it out since there are a lot of good reviews on Yelp. The place was almost completely empty when I walked in, and I wasn't even sure they were open since no-one was at the counter. Eventually someone did come to assist me with my order (They must do most of their business during lunch). I ordered the dog with the chili and slaw, with fries and a drink. The dog was good, and filling. I liked the fries also and the dipping sauce idea is a good one. The reason for only three stars is I am just not one to have a gourmet dog, and at $12+ this is just not a place I would seek out. Not sure if they will survive. Seems like quite a bit of competition for hot dog seekers, and personally I am a-ok with a $3 dog from the street vendor when I am craving hot dogs.

If you are downtown and craving a hot dog - forget the street-meat! Tasty-8's is phenomenal!!! Its a small restaurant - you walk up to the counter and place your order - they call your name when your dog is ready. Cool atmosphere - includes a walk up window outside! I personally love a corn-dog...so naturally the fair is my favorite time of the year. With Tasty 8's now open I can get an amazing gourmet corn-dog any day of the year! They are cooked perfectly and rather large which is perfect for my love of corn-dogs! Try dipping it in ANY of the wonderful (8) sauces, you really cant go wrong! Like a lot of people have said, it is a little pricey for a hot-dog. However, you are getting a gourmet hot-dog (and the combo includes the dog, fries, dipping sauce and fountain drink). AND WELL WORTH THE PRICE!! Perfect for a late night snack if you are downtown on a weekend - they stay open til 3 am for you late-nighters (just be prepared to stand in line at these hours..)

I will forever miss Spize, but Tasty 8's is a pretty decent addition to Fayetteville St. so I won't be too bitter! We stopped in this Friday night for a quick, cheap bite on our way to a SparkCON event. It was definitely quick, but wasn't really that cheap. For two dogs, fries and beers it was a little over $30. That's a little steep for hotdogs....Granted everything was very good, but it's painful to pay that much for something that's usually a couple of bucks (think Roast Grill a few blocks away). Service was quick and effective, and the restaurant looks great (they did a great job with the space) but for what they offer it's not totally worth the high price tag. I may be back, but unfortunately it won't be a regular lunch spot unless they cut the prices a bit!

Fried okra on a dog? Um, yes please. I would have ordered two if my family would have let me. Everyone enjoyed their meals. They even made a bun and cheese for my youngest who doesn't like hot dogs (is this kid really mine?). Fries and dipping sauces were great too.

I've had two pleasant experiences with tasty 8s. The first being some friends and I stopped in for milkshakes while checking out a festival downtown one Saturday afternoon. It is a small area, but they make good use of their space and can seat a lot of people. Very casual with the menu dis played on chalkboards up at the front. Milkshakes were good and thick (my fav) and they have more favors than somewhere like Chucks a few blocks down. I'd be back for the milkshakes alone. The second time I experienced tasty 8s was when they were sampling out hotdogs at a yelp event. The hot got was on a potato bun with bacon and slaw (and probably some other stuff but these were the dominant flavors). The hotdog was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside (yum). The slaw was creamy and the bun was fresh. I'm not a huge hit dog fan but I was really impressed. It definitely peaked my interest and I want to go back to try more items in their menu.

Tasty 8's opened this past Friday and the line to their take out window was crazy long! To avoid the wait, my boyfriend and I decided to try them out on Saturday when they opened at 11am. I ordered the Southern Comfort with sweet potato fries and honey mustard sauce. He ordered the El Perro with belgian frites and bbq sauce. The actually dog was split down the middle into two slices which was different. My dog was beef and his dog was a buffalo brat. The brat was harder to bite into, but it is a good quality, unique meat for a hot dog. These dogs are loaded with toppings! Very messy to eat. The fries were average. I did not like the honey mustard sauce, it needed to be sweeter. I would like to come back and try the Momma Wells' Tasty Treat - peanut butter, fudge, and banana shake. And maybe a corndog. Yes, this place is expensive for a hot dog but I suppose the quality meats are what jack the price up. I like that is is open late hours - 3am on Thursday through Saturday. It will be satisfying for everyone with drunchies on Fayetteville St!

The idea of gourmet dogs is always a mystery, especially with how to alter them creatively and tasty 8's does a great job! They have a great meal deal that lets you have a dog, fries, and drink for $8.88 and all of the dogs that I have had so far have been pretty tasty :p The rising sun and coop are both great choices if you are looking for something more non-traditional. I definitely plan to come back to try the Korean chili chocolate shake :) great place for a late night snack.

I'm sure these people hate me for this disgusting brilliant I ask for almost every time.... idea pick a dog you like and ask for a corn dog dressed up like that it's so amazing and great 'fuck my workout' food. I am also in love with this handout fries because they just have this tasty crunchy perfectness to them that I love ALMOST as amazing as chucks...almost

As a hot dog lover, especially of new and different tastes, I was excited to give these a try. I had the National and the Southern. The good: Both tasted awesome and they weren't skimpy with the toppings (though not heaping either). Definitely would like to try other types of dogs The not so good: the buns were that hard chewy consistency like they had been microwaved. Seriously? You use choice meat and great toppings and nuke the thing? If the only thing you serve is dogs, invest in a bun steamer. Or possibly if you have a steamer they sat way too long in it, and since I ordered right at lunch, that's not good lol. The other big thing is price, though I loved the taste and concept, the dogs are average size and $7 for just a dog is out of my price range. If it had included a side and been like a meal I can see it, but you have to pay $3 more for a side and drink. Just a bit to pricey for me to make it something I will get again (unless someone else pays.) But if you like a good hot dog, they have them and worth a try.

My first visit since our Yelp event. (Hey, I'm not downtown often!) I like the clever concept of Tasty 8's: Eight hot dog choices, Eight dipping sauces, Eight shakes, and 88's in the pricing. In the average hot dog place a choice means what condiments do you want on the one type of hot dog. Not here! Hot Dogs are make of Certified Angus Beef, Continental Sausage or Vegetarian Sausage. Topping combinations are creative and tasty. I like that the hot dogs are cut lengthwise with the center turned towards the inside of the bun - help the hot dog be more stable in the bun! I ordered the Windy City Weenie minus the raw onion and peppers, so it was a poppy seed bun, neon relish, tomato, celery salt, dill pickle & mustard on a 1/4 lb. certified angus beef hot dog. With this I ordered fries with honey mustard dipping sauce. Loved the presentation. Great flavor on both the hot dog and the fries. If you are used to eating 2 or 3 regular hot dogs to fill you up, know that one hot dog and fries here is an ample meal. Not a cheap hot dog meal in price or quality, but as in most things, a quality product does cost more.

This is the second time I've eaten at Tasty 8's, and since I'm a vegetarian, both times I've gotten the Tree Hugger, which is basically a falafel sandwich on a hotdog bun. I'm a big falafel fan, and I have to say Tasty 8's leave much to be desired. They are really dry. Not only that, they are under-dressed. If they weren't so dry, the amount of dressing would probably be fine. I am giving 3 stars instead of 2 because they make an effort to offer a veggie option. The fries also came out on the cold side. The prices seem good (I got a combo, which is a 'dog', fries, dipping sauce, and drink for $9), the location is great, and they offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Pretty cool atmosphere. We did go during lunchtime; however, with only one register catering to indoor and outdoor customers, the service was slow. I hear the hotdogs are really good, so I'm sure based on those it would get a better rating. But if you're going for the falafel option, you may leave disappointed.

I was fairly happy with Tasty 8's, but did not leave infatuated with the place. Adamant to find a mind-blowing hot dog, my travels led me to this newer restaurant in the heart of Downtown Raleigh. I came here due to the suggestions of a friend and was impressed by looking at their menu prior to my visit. I went with some friend and ordered two hot dogs - El Perro & National and a milkshake - Mama Wells Tasty Treat. The El Perro is something I'd order again, but the National failed to impress. As for size. the hot dogs were pretty big, but if I was a bit hungrier, or a bigger dude with a bigger appetite, I could've maybe eaten a 3rd. The shake was good, but I can't really remember what it tasted like. My biggest gripe is that my whole meal cost me somewhere near $20 - yikes I'd come by here for a late bite in Raleigh, but I'm not sure if I'd make a conscious effort to come back. They do stay open 'til 3am on the weekends and serve draft beers, but their prices are not kind to us hungry folk. For a $7 hot dog, I'd want just a little bit more.

While Spize Cafe will be missed in my heart, it's great to see the new Tasty 8's take over its space. Totally redone with wood planking on the outside and a cool dining bar and garage door, the long space takes a bit getting used to. Order counter to the right, you've got your choice of 8 gourmet dogs, dipping sauces and milk shakes. I was able to try out two, the Yo Adrian a dog with steak and cheese along with the Perro (jalapeno-cheddar brat). Both were beautiful and well-plated with a nice set of fries to the side. Lots of sauces to try, there is some creativity here. And I thought the dogs were tasty but not exceptional. They looked better than they tasted and most of the flavor came from the toppings. So overall while I like the concept, I'm not as much a fan of Tasty 8's space and food. Everything looks pretty good but falls a bit short on taste for the price. I'll have to get back for a return visit and see if I feel the same way...

You know the saying "you get what you pay for"...so true here! If you want a cheap no-telling-what-it's-made-of dog with questionable-quality-toppings, this is not it! It's also not fast-food. You order at the counter, give them a name and it's prepared fresh. They call your name when ready and you pick it up. Sure our dogs were $6.88 each. With two bucks more for fries and a dipping sauce. Add in two fountain drinks and a shared fries, it was $19.01. That would have been too expensive had it not been for the QUALITY. Husband and I both chose the El Perro: Continental Sausage All-Natural Jalapeno-Cheddar Buffalo Brat, Queso con Chorizo, Guacamole, Mexican Crema, Salsa & Jalapenos. This was spicy-dog-perfection! Messy but in a finger-licking way, not a falling-apart way. They have so perfected the perfect bite from one end to the other. Some places have toppings to cover up cheap dogs...not here...the sausage dog itself was juicy and spicy and full of flavor. The toppings were all fresh and flavorful. They compliment each other perfectly! Belgian Frites were also delicious. Our choice of Jalapeno Buttermilk Ranch dipping sauce was just the right amount of creamy kick.. They also have ketchup, mustard, hot sauces and other condiments you can add yourself if you want. We didn't venture into the shake realm here, but all of them on the blackboard sure sounded good, as did the other dogs. Will have to go back to try more! There are ordinary dogs and then there are doggone extraordinary ones. These are the latter and worth every penny.

No complaints here. I went during lunch and put in a to-go order. The blue cheese and chili dog was great, and so were the fries with choice of sauce. The wait was on the longer side, but only because it was so busy and someone in front of me ordered a dozen for the office. I suggest going during a low traffic time as well, because parking was not a blast. However, pretty decent gourmet hot dog joint.

  • Kolitha D.

The concept is good, you have a choice with topping selection. Hotdogs were too much burnt and it was ruining the taste of the toppings. Nice place, I don't mind going there again if I am out of other options. Staff was friendly.

My boyfriend and I stopped in for lunch last week to check things out. The layout of the restaurant is simple, clean and comfortable. You order at the counter and they call your name when your food is ready. The menu is organized in categories of 8 to satisfy the OCD in all of us- 8 dogs, 8 shakes, 8 dipping sauces, 8 fountain drinks & 8 local brews. A combo consists of one of their specialty dogs, fries with your choice of dipping sauce, and a fountain drink. I ordered the Southern Comfort dog which has Carolina chili, bleu cheese slaw, red onions and scallions. I was skeptical about the blue cheese slaw at first but really enjoyed the way it blended with the chili. I chose the jalapeño buttermilk ranch dipping sauce for my fries, which was highly addicting. My boyfriend went with the "Yo Adrian", Tasty's take on the Philly Cheesesteak. Being from Philadelphia, he is a bit of a cheesesteak snob, so this was a risky move. He thoroughly enjoyed it. A direct quote from him, "this is awesome." Very poetic, I know. We will definitely be back. Some people have mentioned they're a little pricey, but after spending $5 on a street-dog Saturday night, I would gladly pay a couple extra bucks for Tasty's quality dogs and mound of delicious toppings.

So we are pretty early into the existence of Tasty 8's, and it's pretty good. I sampled a number of the dogs and all were really unique flavors created by the folks here on Fayetteville street. Weirdly enough, of the dogs I had, the chicken sausage was my favorite. But here's the thing. This is not what you think of when you think "hot dog"...well, not if you're born in the south anyway. This is much closer to something you'd find in Chicago. So, for that it doesn't truly hit the mark for me...but if it's late at night and the window is open, hit them up for a solid dog and a craft brew.

Best damn hot dog! Ordered the El Perro and it was the best hot dog I've ever had :) we asked for the fries to be extra crispy and they nailed it! (Prefect crispy fries are hard to find) We will be back!

My husband and I went to Tasty's for lunch one day. I am typically not the biggest hotdog fan however I was very impressed with the menu and the quality of the hotdogs. The fries were handcut and the portions were great for lunch. They offer a wide variety of hotdog flavors and toppings. I would definitely return to Tasty's!

  • N N.

I'm on a budget so I didn't find the portion size or flavor worth the price. I was debating getting the National (sausage and brat with other stuff on it) with a side of fries (the combo 8.88) but ended up just getting the plain jane (with onions and mustard, a favorite of mine) and their regular fries. The dipping sauce was very good and the fries were alright. As a side for under 3 bucks it's not too bad of a deal, but I was very disappointed in the hot dog. For 5 dollars I expected more than I got. Not to mention even after fasting for over 12 hours for blood work I was still not impressed in the hot dog. Personally I would have much preferred a push cart nathan's or sab for 2 bucks over this. The dining area is kind of small but you may not get a seat if you go around lunch time, though it's a quick eat so people come in and out fast. Plus, they have a pick up window so you can grab and go. If I find myself in a better financial situation I may go back to try the sausage and brat combo but I will not be eating their regular dogs anytime soon. I may be a bit biased as my father use to go to a local small time german butcher and what he brought back was gold.

I am a regular at this establishment and can honestly say that its the best original "quick service" restaurant in Raleigh! You can't go wrong with any of their menu items, particularly with the various dipping sauces. The prices are on point for the quality of their food, and they are even developing vegetarian and gluten-free options. The sweet potato fries add a nice variety from the standard side of fries and the seasonal milkshakes demonstrate that the business is always changing to the likeness of the clients. Brandon (the General Manager) and his staff are always friendly and offer great service in all that they do! This restaurant is particularly enjoyable for the late night foodies, like myself, who look forward to a clean, inviting place that does not require a wait staff to serve them (i.e. IHOPS or a Waffle House), and they can come and go at their own leisure.

Like the other positive reviews here, I liked Tasty 8's. My southern comfort dog was damn good and the fries were excellent. Combo is the way to go. A dog w/fries was plenty of meal for me and I'm 220 lbs. Next time I go I might build my own dog. Also appreciated the manager coming by and checking with me, asking how everything was. I'll be back. Good luck guys! I think you have something good going here!

A relatively new spot on Fayetteville specializing in gourmet hot dogs and milkshakes. I can dig it. I got the Southern Comfort and Yo Adrian, which were both solid, as well as a banana / chocolate / peanut butter milkshake, which blended the flavors of each very well. It's a little pricier than what people might be used to spending on hot dogs, but I think the quality warrants it. The space itself has edgy wall murals, ample TVs, and a seating layout that allows for good people watching if that's what you're interested in. I'll probably be back given the laid back vibe and nice location.

First of all the fries and the dipping sauces are amazing! Best part of all of it, the customer service was outstanding, thank you BRANDON! I would go back just because he was so helpful, polite and just wonderful. He was busy I had a free coupon for fries he treated me great!!

Nothing but good things to say about Tasty 8's... Another great Raleigh original concept! My friends and I have tried them all, and a few of the milkshakes, too. My favorite is The National. The only dog that's not completely unique is the Chicago, and it's the best Chicago style dog I've had! Sweet potato fries and ANY of the shakes are legit. Highly recommend you check it out.

Most amazing gourmet dogs I have ever had and their fries are killer. I had the dog of the month which was called Rubey Dog. It had corn beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand island dressing on it! Might I say it was to die for!!! I came all the way from Virginia to try them:) it was worth the 3 hour drive! I wish they would expand!! I will most definitely rave about them to everyone!!! They gave wonderful customer service! Thanks guys:)

I really would like to give this place one star, but to be honest I didn't try their hot dogs (it was 2am and I was craving a milkshake), so maybe they are unbelievably good and they deserve an extra star for that (I doubt it, they didn't look good, plus they are $7 each!!). Here's the thing, I know they just opened, but when I wait 45 minutes for an overpriced shake (that was so sickeningly sweet I could barely get it down), and the whole time I'm in line watching the people working there and they are just standing around with stoned looks on their faces, and then I get up to order and the guy acts like he hates everyone, I can tell you they aren't even trying. They lost a lot of business during the 45 minutes I waited, people would get in line behind me and after about 5 minutes of the line not moving would shout expletives and then leave! And then they forgot my order, I had to ask about it and the guy gives me the excuse that they just opened, well maybe you should have had your act together BEFORE opening for business?? And then after they forgot my order and I told the guy about it, he still didn't make it! I had to go up and tell them again! This time he asks me if I put in an alternative order, he tells me they are missing one of the ingredients to make it! What a joke! From the time I ordered, till I actually got a shake it was 15 minutes. And they didn't have any spoons, in fact they said they ran out of all plasticware, how does a restaurant run out of everything on the second day?! Another stupid thing is they only had the take out window open. Why close down the dining area before 3am? I'm hoping this place gets their act together, it's nice to have an alternative to the hot dog carts, but I feel that with their really high prices, and their lackadaisical employees, that this place won't be around long.

Tried them out for early lunch. Quick order, quick food and I like what they've done with the old Spize space. The price point on the dogs does raise the bar on expectations. First up was the National. Cool riff on a southern dog - fried okra, pim cheese, chow chow. Ripped the whole brat out with the first bite. I'm all for natural casings but you need to cook them enough to make them manageable. Would have taken back if I was dining in. Rising Sun was much better executed. Salty, sweet, a little heat - great beer dog. Given that Chuck's does food mag worthy burgers around the corner at about the same price point, a few tweaks are needed.

The Rising Sun dog is awesome, what an umami bomb!

Original concept. Delicious hot dogs. Cool atmosphere (though I wish it was a little bigger...). Excellent beers. Regarding all the talk about this place being overpriced - not really. I've eaten here three times now, spent anywhere from $24ish - $50ish on dinners for two, and have _never_ left hungry. In fact, I'm often unable to finish the meal because of how much food it is. Sure, I can go somewhere else and get a smaller, delicious-in-a-completely-different-way hot dog with a Mt. Dew for less money than I spend here for roughly 2 lbs. of food and a local craft beer, but comparing the two and calling Tasty 8's "overpriced" is ridiculous. That's like saying Angus Barn is overpriced because I can get a cheaper steak at the Ale House...

Tasty 8's is one of a kind. The perfect place to grab a dog and drink a beer while downtown. I've had the Coop and the Oak City corn dog and both were delicious (especially w/ side of honey mustard). Can't forget the sweet potato fries and shakes. For someone that is not very adventurous, you can't go wrong here. My fiancée and I were also amazed at how fast everything came out with how busy they were. Definitely will come back soon.

Stood outside the window for a couple of minutes while the guy inside, who clearly saw me, just carried on a conversation with the gentlemen behind the counter. After I waited a few minutes then walked in he told me they were closed. Certainly not very good customer service.

We found Tasty 8's to be a great choice for dinner or a late night bite! The hotdogs were a nice change to pizza or a burger. Fries and shakes were delicious too! We highly recommend Tasty 8's.

I love this place. I come here whenever I'm downtown for good eats. I love the ginger beer float and the Heart & Seoul Milkshake. My to-go dog is "the Coop", but you can't go wrong with anything here. Whether is a late night bar hop that's got you hankering for a good hot dog or if you're working downtown and want to grab a quick bite before heading back to work, this is the place for you! I loved coming here after my work shifts. The only downside is the garage style restaurant. During the spring and fall it's nice, but it's too hot during the summer and it lets all the flies and bees in. Overall, it's a great place to eat!

This was a nice treat. My family of three arrived after the Christmas parade crowd had left and the mom of the owners offered to clean the table for us. Seriously, very endearing. I am a NYC girl and hot dogs are near and dear to my heart. Very good dogs, but the fries stole the show. They were fresh and crispy. The dipping sauces were yummy, now I am craving green goddess dressing. I really enjoyed our meal, the service, and the atmosphere.

I can honestly say I absolutely love the choices here! I love that they use very high quality meats and their menu options are so creative. My favorite is "The Coop" made with chicken sausage, cucumber. and avocado. I also love their sweet potato fries and choices of sauces, especially their honey mustard. Their milkshakes are also so addictive! I love the "Momma Wells" with PB, fudge and bananas. I also get the basic chocolate shake "The Remedy" because it's just perfection. My food has always come out surprisingly quick and the staff is extremely helpful. I'm excited about their local beer selection now too. This really is a great local business addition to downtown Raleigh!

Bomb ass hot dogs. A little pricey but good quality food. Got the rising sun hot dog. Awesome blend of Asian flavors and a kick of spice with the sriracha. The fries were pretty good and the variety of dipping sauces were sweet

My first trip to Tasty 8s was pretty unremarkable. The good: very friendly staff, and prompt service (although I did get in just before the lunch rush) The not so good: I went with the Yo Adrian, the angus beef dog itself was not very hot. The philly steak was mostly tasteless, I couldn't really tell it was there when taking a bite of everything. Overall the flavors just didn't come together for me on this one. A nit pick: napkins are located up front for you to get before you sit, which I wouldn't normally have any problem with, but my dog was incredibly messy, and it would have been nice to have more napkins available at the table. From looking at the pictures, this may be an issue with the other dogs as well. Overall it was disappointing, especially for the price point, but I will give it one more shot to try out the corn dogs.

I really wanted to be a big fan of Tasty 8's, especially as much as I love Trolley Stop in Wrightsville Beach. Unfortunately the hot dog selections seem too over the top so it's essentially a ton of "sides" on a bun with a hotdog somewhere in the mix. Also $30 is a little extreme for my husband and I to have a quick "hot dog" lunch on a weekday.

Food was awesome and staff very friendly, was hungry, stopped while out on motorcycle ride and it was early and quiet yet!great vegan dog and fries!totally unplanned and never heard of place, don't visit downtown much.got to sit outside on picnic table and enjoy cool evening.

I have never left a 1 star rating on a place before but this one warrants one. Last night we were waiting in line for well over 20 minutes and the line absolutely not moving at all. I went to the front and noticed a manager yelling at customers when bring asked how long on their order and if the line would move.

I'm loving Tasty 8's as a quick downtown lunch option. So far I've tried the Rising Sun, Southern Comfort, and the basic corndog, plus fries and various sauces. The corn dog is the best corn dog I've ever tried. Both hot dogs were very good too, although I could do without the bonito flakes on the Rising Sun (or at least drastically reduce the quantity; those things are strong). I'm not a huge blue cheese fan so wasn't sure about the blue cheese slaw on the Southern Comfort, but it's not too cheesy and is really good with the chili and hot dog. I've also heard the El Perro is very good and quite spicy. The fries are solid, not the best ever but very good. Of the sauces, most are fine, but I love the Green Goddess. It's much better than the typical mass produced green goddess salad dressing. I don't think the prices are bad. These are bigger and better quality than your typical cart hot dog. I think of one of these hot dogs as more like a sandwich, which I wouldn't have any problem paying ~$7 for. I mean I'd prefer lower prices, but I can live with this. They go way overboard on the whole 8 theme though.

I was really excited to try this place, but sadly disappointed. $23.00 for cold hotdogs that had a lot going on with the toppings yet had little flavor.

Dog of the month was soo Yummy!!!! Love the different dipping sauces for the fries and "the remedy" milkshake! Will definitely be back!

This is my favorite hotdog concept ever. Period. It's just better. Great dogs, cool space, awesome shakes and beers on tap that are at the level of more ambitious restaurants. This isn't a cheap, dirty water hotdog cart serving mgd, so be prepared to pay for and get good food on a bun.

  • Robert S.

The Frits are spot on. The sausage was great, and paired well with the toppings. I had a heart and seoul shake that balanced well with sweet and spicy. Great spot for lunch, would be even better after a pub run.

Great variety of hot dogs and shakes! I was stuffed after I left!

Decided that after my second visit it wasn't worth the price in any way based on the lack of quality. For a beer, fries, and hot dog (in that order of what I like there- they don't have to cook the beer) I'd pay $10. Compare that to the $20 you'd pay right now.

  • M S.

The national is the best! The staff here is super friendly, and you can get late night beers! Who could ask for more? This place is brand new and awesome. The craft beer is great and cold on tap. I think they also have bottles. I greatly prefer them to the guys on the street corners who sell low quality dogs. These are super high quality, and they have vegetarian options too!

Too expensive for what you get. I got the Southern Comfort & sweet potato fries. The chili was spicy and bland. The slaw wasn't too bad. At least they toasted the bun. The fries were limp. And I asked for honey mustard as the dipping sauce for the fries but didn't get it. I used the take-out window and took it back to the office so there wasn't a chance to ask for what was missed. Speaking of take-out...the bag was a large shopping bag...very wasteful. It was their first day so maybe I'll give them one more shot in a few months. Very sad with the experience as I love hot dogs and work downtown.

Good unique gourmet hot dogs and very good beer selection, some local drafts. Worth a visit, truly unique for Raleigh restaurant scene. I had the Yo Adrian, excellent. Fries are good too.

Today was my first time at Tasty8's. I had the "Yo Adrian" and it was so SALTY! The fries were salty too. My sons hot dog he said was salty as well. So was the price for that matter. $20 bucks for 2 dogs 2 fries and 2 drinks. I would pay that at 5Guys took suppose but at least I wouldn't pucker up like a salted codfish. Not saying I wouldn't try it again, but I would hope they can recommend a menu item that isn so salty. Anyone have a bottle of water?

I really wanted to like this place. I'm a big fan of hot dogs with crazy toppings and have been looking for a place to fill the void in my heart left when my previous hot dog place with crazy toppings in Durham closed. Sadly, Tasty 8's isn't an adequate replacement. I had the Southern Comfort. It's fine, but nothing special. The hot dog itself was pretty good, but the chili was average and overpowered the slaw so you couldn't really taste it. Considering they're charging $7 for a hot dog, it's overpriced for what you get. I'll have to continue my quest for a new go-to hot dog place.

Great additional to downtown Raleigh. Have been here twice and the milkshakes simply cannot be beat. I see a lot of comments mentioning the price, while it is more than some other local spots, I feel like the quality is a lot higher at Tasty 8s. Would def recommend.

First I want to say that I didn't get the hot dog because I don't eat meat so I ordered a "Tree Hugger" a falafel with a few diced tomatoes, cucumber, arugula and some goddess dressing. I gave 2 stars because it was ok but really dry. If you want a falafel sandwich go to Neomonde.

Great meal! I had The Southern Comfort and loved it. Also, the shake I had (Korean Seoul) was very impressive. Can't wait to go back!

  • Elizabeth W.

Tried the Tree Hugger and the Rising Sun. The hot dogs aren't huge for the price, but you're paying for the novelty. With fries, it's more than filling for the price. Shakes are delicious (I had the Berry Berry Good) but maybe a little expensive. I will definitely be back for a late night snack.

My husband and a few friends were roaming downtown Raleigh this weekend and decided to try this spot. We usually head downtown when we have an inkling for a Sabrette's dog but now we'll be stepping it up and indulging in a tasty 8's hotdog. This place is better than firewurst & I love that they use neomonde bread. It really strengthens the impression of local supporting local. The tree hugger hot dog was a little drier than I would like, even though I know falafel is deep fried. The southern classic looks delicious but only after we ordered it did we realize there's bacon in the chili. The rising sun is a delicious hotdog with sriracha and Japanese mayo. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of neon relish so I know to stand clear if Chicago style hotdogs. The Belgian Frites were tasty and the jalapeño ranch added a nice kick of heat. The sweet potato fries were a big hit too. We had our eye on frozen yogurt for dessert so we opted out of trying a shake. But next time, it will definitely be the first thing I order. Looking forward to going back downtown soon.

Great variety of inventive hot dogs. Staff tries to make it quick, though kitchen has a hard time keeping up. The walk-up window outside definitely helps keep you out of the restaurant craziness. They are not shy with the toppings either, so you do feel like you get your money's worth! Overall great hot dog experience.

Was downtown for a meeting and after the meeting had a craving for something, saw dogs and I was sold... It had outdoor seating, sort of... The people up front were awesome, the menu is a bit overwhelming for the little they offer.. Ended up with a Chicago dog, the toppings on the dog were spot on, the problem I have is with the dog itself.. Pretty tasteless.. The fries were very good and the dipping sauce they gave me was very good... I would probably go back and try them again.. Shakes look pretty solid

Great dogs! Great staff! I would definitely go back. You will be treated right here and your belly filled. Can't remember what I had but either route you take you won't be wondering "what the hell did I just do?"

Giant hot dogs and filling shakes in eight different styles. My favorite hot dog at Tasty 8's is The National, which is a brat served with pimento, okra, and chow chow. In my experience, the fries have been hit-or-miss. Sometimes they have spent too long under the heat lamp. But they're good when they are fresh. If you can manage to eat a hot dog and a shake, then you're a true champion. I tried the P.B. and DE (peanut butter and ducle de leche), which was delicious but way too much food when combined with my hot dog. Service the first week they were open was very slow and it honestly looked a bit chaotic behind the counter. I think they've worked things out now, and I'll be back for the occasional lunch or late night snack. I like that they are next to Paddy O'Beers because I can get better beer over there and walk over with my hot dog.

Got to do a sampling of Tasty 8's hot dogs thanks to a Yelp Event. All the hot dogs were good and very interesting. The corn dog was by far the best, but the chicken sausage and Felafal vegetarian option were other good options. They feature a monthly special hot dog too. Fries were amazing as were all the dipping sauces- don't skip out on the fries! They also have local beers on tap and delish milkshakesI If you need a new late night option (they are open to 3am Friday and Saturday), try this next. Thanks Yelp for hosting the event!

I'm not one to complain about price. If it's good, I'll gladly pay for it, even if it is only a few times. A hot dog that costs as much as it would at a ballpark is pretty steep. The dogs here are cooked to order and don't expect to order a plain dog. These are some unique dogs topped with serious flavor. The uniqueness comes from the toppings, and less so the dog itself. Topping coverage is good with no skimping in sight. Best of all were the fries, Belgian style with that great starchiness. A little more seconds in the fryer and they would have avoided some of the limp. Tasty 8s refers to the number of dogs on the menu. 3.5 stars for some really good dogs. A touch on the pricey side, but these aren't street cart dogs. Grab a table outside on the sidewalk or stand up at the bar in front of the open garage door.

Got the coop chicken dog. No cream cheese, extra guac. Waited 15 minutes to get it after ordering. Part of the dog was burnt. The parts that weren't were dry. Hardly any guac on it. Today is an art festival downtown. Logistically, this place is screwed. Takes you 25+ minutes to get a dog to someone and you have 6 people on staff? Something's botched in the process. It's a freaking hot dog. When the orders are finally placed, your tray is put up on the counter and they throw fries on it soon thereafter. I imagine when they're less busy this doesn't result in ice cold fries. Waiting on a dog today resulted in cold fries. The metal trays don't appear to be sanitized in a dish washer between uses. Employee would wipe them down with a damp rag then stack them up near the register for re-use. Wife got the southern comfort dog. It wasn't burnt anywhere and was tasty but the blue cheese slaw was sorely lacking blue cheese. These guys have a decent model, but they need to figure out what the hold up is on a busy day. They're losing revenue with such a horribly slow turnover. While we were in line several people opened the door to enter but changed their minds and left when they saw the line. The employees were also visibly stressed, sweating, and incapable of efficiently dealing with the customer load. The prep should be figured out because fries were cold, dogs were burnt, the wait was 25 minutes, and they might be perfect on non event days, but for a ridiculously overpriced $20 hot dog combo, I won't ever be back.

Delicious, Pork "el perro" dog is my personal favorite. But you can't go wrong with whichever you order, they are all delicious

I had tried this place at a YELP event previously so I was PUMPED to get a full sized dog with a friend for lunch. The line kinda took forever as the girl was struggling to ring people up (system glitch? user error? who knows?) but the wait was definitely worth it. For $8.88 (aren't you a clever girl?!) I got a dog, fries, a sauce, and a drink. I thought it was a pretty good deal. I got the 'Rising Sun' dog and it was delicious! It was a little spicy but was rounded out with a creamy sauce. I really wanted to order like 2 more and make myself miserably full, but I had to go back to work. I can't wait to come back here and try all the other dogs and milkshakes.

  • Justin B.

Yo Adrian was a good choice but the fries seemed overcooked. Would come back and try another dog as well as the corn dogs. The combo meal isn't a real combo because it doesn't include a drink.

First time going I was offered a gluten free bun for my medically diagnosed gluten sensitivity but then one of the chefs working said there weren't any left. I was fine with that and was totally good with going no-bun. He then questioned my gluten sensitivity and sarcastically talked about celiac disease, as if to question the validity of it. It made me feel embarrassed and it quickly changed the energy of my experience there. If you are an establishment that offers gluten-free products, you ought not to make your patrons feel dumb for eating gluten free products. Will not be going back.

Saw this place go up a couple weeks ago and decided to give it a whirl today for lunch. I had the "national", which was a brat covered in pimento cheese, fried okra, and chow chow (which is basically slaw). The fried okra was yummy- I actually picked that off and ate it by itself. I had the in-house hand-cut fries with the chipotle crema mexicana dipping sauce. It tasted like a mayonnaise base and it was very satisfying. The girl working there told me it was the best sauce on the menu. I took my food to go, but the ambiance is comfortable and nice with large open windows, and it looked like there was a picnic table outside (although I can't imagine wanting to eat outside today- it was so hot!) They also sell milkshakes (the flavors look awesome) and local beers there. But I just had soda, because it came with my combo. Ten bucks for hot dog, fries and drink- not too bad, because it was quite tasty.

I think this is going to be a solid addition to downtown, especially considering they will be open late night on the weekends. I got the Philly Cheesesteak-esque hot dog and really enjoyed it. The CAB they use for the dogs had a great, unique full flavor about it. The fries were good too; crispy and came with your choice of dipping sauce. Can't wait to try them all. Price wise...sure, a little steep for a (gourmet) hot dog, but considering somethjng crappy like Snoopy's would only be a dollar or so less for dogs & fries, ultimately not a bad deal. And you won't find anything else downtown that includes a decent portioned side for any less. Anywho, I thought my hot dog was awesome. Maybe I need to go back not drunk, but Tasty 8's was the first thing I thought about when I woke up. Certainly tasty.

The Southern Comfort Hot Dog and Fries with Jalapeño buttermilk ranch sauce were great.. I got the white onions instead of red and was highly pleased. The flavors were harmonious and the portions were just right. I was concerned about the blue cheese coleslaw, but the blue cheese flavor was very subtle.

Tried this place a few days ago and I'm already back. The Chicago dog (Windy City Weenie) is excellent. It's the real deal. If you're lucky enough to catch Anthony behind the counter, he will definitely hook you up with some awesome food. Oh, the chili cheese fries and corn dogs are on point as well...

First the good: Great dogs! My 9 year old son had the kids meal dog (only $3.99 with fries and drink) and said it was the best hot dog he ever had. I had the Southern Comfort with Fries for $8 and it was excellent. The blue cheese slaw and chili were certainly top notch and the fries were terrific. You want an amazing selection of gourmet dogs this is it. Tons of combinations with new toppings I would never of thought of but that sound great. Now the bad: Prices are a bit high for a hot dog. I thought it was worth it, but something to keep in mind. Also, if you just want a really good hot dog - you may not be able to get what you expect. For example, they didn't have sauerkraut!? I could get pimento cheese, but no kraut! Also, the dogs come so overloaded its an engineering experiment to try and eat it without wearing it... and no spoons. No way to scoop some off or scoop up what falls back onto the plate. But these are things I feel certain they will fix over time. So all in, I would certainly recommend stopping by, and if the kids will eat off the kids menu, bring them too!

Stopped in with friends today for a little patriotic Fourth of July week hotdog. Got the Carolina special one. Forget the exact name but it was quite good. Got sweet potato fries and a Pilsner to go with it. Not the cheapest lunch bite but well worth the price in my opinion. I'll be back.

Corndog...more like cornHOG, that thing is HUGE! ...and delicious. The concept is really cool, a downtown walkup window for hotdogs (as standard as a Chicagoan and as exotic as some wasabi-dusted thing)...it's gourmet. Understand that the gourmet status comes with a gourmet price tag (in terms of hot dogs so, it's not dramatic lol) and you're fine. Really, though. You won't walk away hungry. The location right in the bank-y side of downtown toward the Capitol and the State Administrative buildings makes sense...I can see a lot of busy Raleigh movers and shakers coming here for their very urban lunch break. Very much a 'toast' kind of place...take something simple and do it OH.SO .RIGHT.

Good food, but the restaurant itself was a disorganized mess. Bread delivery was in front of the order counter, order taker didn't have a pen, soda machine had its knobs removed for some reason, and every table was filthy (and they had only been open for a half hour when we stopped by). Food is a little pricey, but pretty tasty. Fries were too dry for my preference, though.

I've visited this place two times now and have to say the 2nd time around was much better. The first time we went the place was brand spanking new so they still had a few kinks to work out. The hot dogs are fantastically unique which is what I love most about this place. You could get a regular hotdog but if you're coming to a place like Tasty 8's, you should probably be a little more adventurous when choosing from the menu. They have a vegetarian hotdog made with falafel which is pretty darn tasty (even though I'm not a vegetarian). At the end of your meal, go ahead and try a milk shake. The salted caramel is one of the best I've ever tasted!
