Diners. I love them. Pete's is classic diner all the way. Offering the usual diner fare, Pete's was pretty quiet the day I was there as it happened to be between the breakfast and lunch rush. Because they hadn't yet started the lunch offerings, I ordered breakfast which worked well for me as breakfast is my benchmark for assessing a diner. Everything was cooked exactly the way I like it. I splurged this time and ordered the country ham figuring I'd drink enough water the rest of the day to counter the effects of the salt. It's the first time I've been asked if I wanted it cooked hard or soft. I never knew I could have that choice. I like that. The eggs were good - a bit crispy on the edges, but that's the way I like them. The toast was nicely browned and not soggy. As I spoke to the cook, an energetic woman who had me tired just watching her do the prep and cleanup, she had me pretty amazed at how well she could guess where I was from based on my accent. That was later explained by the owner/manager who mentioned that most of his business was local -- outsiders like me were rare. Well. ... all I can say is that those who pass by on the major road a few miles away: they're missing out. Classic diner, classic vibe.
