Stopped by for breakfast or lunch couple times this month. Bacon, egg, cheese biscuits are delish. Good fried chicken. Very old place that may have seen better days but food good and staff friendly. Tuesday and Thursday nights they have cornhole tourneys. Pretty crowded with lots of folks having fun.

Cash only - But that only adds to its authentic OBX beach front charm. Delicious fries, burgers, fish sandwiches.... crab cakes are excellent!!! Def coming back here!

Been coming to this place for almost 5 years now and it is hands down some of the best food on this island. I ALWAYS order the original BBQ sandwich with frenchfries and coleslaw. Nothing beats it.

This is the perfect place to stop in if you are in the need for some food and have just come off the beach. Nothing fancy, but it will fix a hungry stomach with good food. The people working here aren't very friendly, so don't expect to be greeted when you come in. The older gentlemen, who I expected maybe ran the place, was super nice though. The bbq was pretty good with a little bit of spice. The frys are pretty thin but are soooo delicious. Definitely a good stop in place if your looking for a decent bite to eat. Bbq was 8.99 with fries.

I wish I would have stuck with others' recommendations listed here. As others have said, the fries were tasty. We were excited by a big hand written sign along the highway that read fried chicken available daily. We ordered it, waited 25 minutes for it and it was not worth waiting for. The meat was tender and the batter was crisp, but something just quite wasn't right with the batter. It tasted almost as if it was cooked too long and burned - our the oil it was cooked in was too high or adulterated with other food items. The shrimp basket as well couldn't get the batter quite right - too much batter and way too crunchy. I'm from New Orleans though where we grew up on good fried chicken and golden fried shrimp, so I am little biased in how I enjoy my chicken and seafood.

Before I start the review, please note they do not take credit cards and personally I would not say they are child-friendly, though some menu options are. I give this place some credit: they are open much earlier in the season than juat about any other restaurant in Hatteras. That said, we went in with high expectations based on Yelp reviews and they were not met. The table ordered: hot dog with fries and applesauce; Hatterasman's burger; fried flounder sandwich; mushroom burger; side of hush puppies; a soda, a sweet tea, and water. So apparently tea and hush puppies are too expensive to make in the off-season. Who knew? Why they were still on the white-board menu is a mystery. Also if you have an item like grouper listed as one of your specials, you probably should have some available for people to order. Just sayin'. Food arrives after a bit of a wait except the applesauce, which we at the table didn't realize until we'd left. Half-star demerit for the table for inattentiveness. Considering the number of orders that came in, no surprise on the wait. The Hatterasman's burger was a delicious mess of meat, onion rings, cheese, and way too much barbecue sauce. If you order it, ask them to put the sauce on the side. Otherwise you will wear some home. The mushroom burger was about what you'd expect from a divey type of place. The flounder sandwich was a massive piece of fried fish on a bun. The tartar sauce was tasty but the fish was most decidedly not fresh and was quite dry. The hot dog met with my daughter's approval, meaning she ate most of it. We spent a good 2-3 minutes trying to figure out the seasonings on the fries because we enjoyed them so much. Overall we wouldn't call this a "must-eat" place, and if you have small kids I would recommend you get your food to go.

Mothers Day at the Hattersman. Best flounder and grouper sandwiches on the island. Same dive atmosphere with new varnished tables.

  • Paul S.

I ordered the Flounder, Mahi Mahi and the cheeseburger. The size of the fish was huge and was a great value for the money. The flounder was good, the burger was thick and tasty. But, the Mahi Mahi was bursting with flavor! I would highly recommend the Mahi Mahi!! Quick delivery and they even have sides of ketchup and tartar sauce available from the deliverer. The fries were very nice as well! I would definitely order from them again.

best burger joint on the island..been going here since I was a baby

Must try! This is now my favorite place to eat in the village. I had the chicken Philly sandwich, good straw fries with malt vinegar and a beer and it hit the spot. The person I was with had the founder sandwich which was huge and the real deal and lightly breaded. Great selection of beer. Like the other reviews said, this place is a dive but in a good way. Reminds you of a good old surfer hangout with an eclectic, cool vibe. They play great classic rock music which I loved and made me comfortable enough to want to hang around. Staff was super friendly. All this combined made me like this place better than the higher end restaurants down the street and the food was better too. Try it...it will not disappoint.

  • Jessica K.

So delicious! I had the hatteras man burger and some fries... So good!! And not bad on price either! Can't wait to vacation in Hatteras again so we can go back!!

  • Amy R.

If you're looking for a dive with a great bite this is it. The restaurant is not there for the ambience but my meal was delicious. Flavorful lump crab meat in a wondrously fried patty and served with seasoned crispy fries (think gourmet in and out burger]. No complaints other than the sweet tea was disappointing - sugar was added after the tea had cooled and that changes the flavor.

Best Yellowfin Tuna sandwich I've ever had! The French fries, hamburgers, and fried chicken are awesome as well! Don't miss this spot while in the Outer Banks (we drove down from Nags Head for it, it was well worth it!)

    (5)
  • Paul P.

While vacationing in the Outer Banks I was surprised to find that where I was located there were very few quick service seafood shacks to be found. That was until I made it a point to seek one out and came upon The Hatterasman. Simply put, this is an ideal spot if you are looking for a quick meal for a reasonable price and a good portion size. I tried three things, the grouper sandwich served with cocktail sauce and lettuce and tomato, a shrimp and chip basket and a side of hushpuppies. Normally I am not a big fan of the 'puppies but these were very well done. They weren't too corn mealy and were well fried and served with butter pats. I was actually very impressed with this dish. The grouper and shrimp basket were both served with shoestring fries which were outstanding. So, if you want fried seafood and find it lacking in the nether regions of the Outer Banks, The Hattersman more than fits the bill.

So glad Dinky's wasn't open when we were in the area and in search of food. This place looks like a dive but the beer and food were the best! Great crispy french fries. The freshest fish sandwich I've ever had. It was grilled seasoned mahi mahi. My husband had a cheeseburger. He is a cheeseburger snob and LOVED it! Highly recommend a stop in if you want good food, good service and friendly atmosphere.

  • Lori K.

Grabbed a takeout order on check in night in Hatteras. Grilled Mahi sandwich w/ fries & a fried flounder sandwich w/ fries. Also grabbed two cups of the Hatteras Chowder. Everything was terrific & hit the spot, including the herbed French fries. It is cash only, but we knew that, because it's clearly posted. We would definitely go back. Loved the Chowder!!

  • Karl B.

Like a previous review stated, this place is very unpretentious and may even be considered a hole in the wall but that is cool with me! I had the flounder sandwich with homemade tartar sauce and the sandwich was huge! Even better is the fact that you didn't have to question whether it was 'mystery fish' since it was locally caught and hand breaded in house (as should be expected in the OBX). The portions are great for the price that you pay and I definitely will visit this small beach shack again before I leave the island. I also noticed that there were 3 rather large wild turkeys just hanging out towards the back of the shack which adds to the character of this small hole in the wall. Do yourself a favor, eat here!

  • Amber H.

4.5 stars, sweet tea wasn't very sweet but I think I can over look that. If you come here and don't like it, I would question if you actually like vacationing on Hatteras in the first place. You walk in, you order at the counter, you pay in cash, you maybe find a seat at one of the handful of booths (covered in bumper stickers) or tables (made from old sound markers). If they are full, you go out to a picnic table or your car once your food is done. Everything here is unpretentious --- they are proudly serving you chicken strips and onion rings on 8 ounce hand formed patties of beef with little strings of potato on the side, from a beachy shack. It's amazing and good. The portions are huge, the prices are fair.

  • Ron M.

Okay, this is a dive but a jewel of a dive! We enjoyed awesome chargrilled hotdogs, luscious crab cakes, and fantastic chicken tenders. The staff is uber friendly. Prices are reasonable. Ambiance, you be the judge.

  • Joanie B.

Great local spot! We were down in Hatteras for a long weekend in January and were pleased to find that this was one of the places open during the off season. We had a crabcake sandwich that was out of this world and a Philly cheese steak that was fantastic. The crabcake was nicely done and the cheese steak was hot, melty, and delicious! The fries were ridiculously addictive and the dollar beers were a nice surprise. Definitely will be going back!

  • Michele D.

Not just the best burger on the beach ... One of the Best Burgers ever! Don't judge a book by its cover, this little drive-in serves great high quality food. A "must try" on your next visit to Hatteras.

  • Roger S.

Great Dive Restaurant. Hole in the wall. Reviews are right on point. Pay in cash, seating is minimal inside, but benches outside. Got the chicken cheese steak, it was spot on! fresh everything. bread was fresh. fries were not overcooked and fantastic. taste was great!. juicy! awesome!! waited a touch for our food to come, but we were also a party of 6 which makes sense. bathrooms- outside, clean, probably the cleanest bathrooms ive been to in a dive restaurant. it had ample soap, toilet paper, and towels. Negative- steelers fans. jersey in the window. this is the only thing that held me back from giving it 5 stars. Would go back! best food on the island thus far.

  • Fred B.

This is a funky looking little place that we been coming to through at least three changes of ownerships. When we initiallly came here this was pretty much a hot dog/hamburger joint with the usual assortment of sandwiches and sides. And the hot dog was outstanding, and the burger was close behind, and the fries finished the trinity. It has with the changes in ownership morphed into more than a beach drive in with the addition of decent barbecue, more seafood items, including sushi. The fish baskets are almost all nice, the Crab Cake Sandwich is consistently excellent, and the fries remain super. Great place for a reasonably priced cold beer, hot or burger, seafood on bread or not. and some fries. Good, friendly service doesn't hurt either.

  • Bridget C.

Stopped in for lunch, the small plates are plenty of food for me, the rest of the family got full size meals and didn't finish everything. Food was fresh and service was quick. Staff were very friendly and happy to share local lore.

Excellent lunch stop... Hush puppies and Crab cake sandwich = Amazing!! Downside is cash only.

  • annie z.

This authentically dirty beach shack hole in the wall gets five stars! Ordered the 8oz Hatterasman ( cheeseburger, bacon, onion rings, bbq sauce) and a flounder sandwich. Both came with shoestring fries which were amazing because they used the same fat that they fry other seafood with and they were perfectly seasoned. Price was fair. paid cash. left full and happy.

  • Molly G.

It's a dive, you need to be prepared - but the food is well worth the atmosphere. Fries are amazing... salty, skinny, crunchy, magic. My husband had the crab cake sandwich and absolutely loved it. One kid had the flounder sandwich and liked that too. I had the fried oyster sandwich - definitely needed the spicy cocktail sauce, but was good as well. They know how to fry some food there - just don't go thinking you'll order a salad.

  • Marvin S.

All of the other reviews are pretty much spot on.... ya can't go wrong. A few notes/reminders: 1) BRING CASH 2) It's a good burger joint with some nice seafood options too. 3) Try the "Crack Fries" (as some locals call the french fries here) 4) Definitely shabby chic, the decor and the food. 5) Very easily accessible, friendly and the smell when you walk in the door... sweet (from the hush puppies no doubt) Go ahead, give it a try. Its a good fast food place your belly and your wallet will thank you for.

Loved this place with its fantastic food & simplicity. Bring cash. crab cake was very good and those w/ me really enjoyed their burgers. Looking forward to fish sandwich next time....yummm

  • Jon W.

The building is not glamorous. The seating is like an old fast food restaurant. You can order ordinary fast food if you are inclined. You can also order some of the best fresh seafood you'll eat anywhere. Locally caught fresh Mahi Mahi, Drum, etc. The Hatterasman is located near one of the best sport fishing marinas on the planet and can sell whatever was being caught the day before. It is properly prepared and will taste better than a meal costing 5 times the price in a large city.

    (5)
  • Logan S.

This place is great!! Crabcake sandwich yumm. Best fries ever. Unlimited sodas. $1.95 for a beer. Real character and pretty darn good food. VERY casual, bathing suits and sandy feet. Con: some 'off color' stickers make for uncomfortable conversations with little ones.

I just visited here for the first time on vacation and man was it delicious. It's nothing fancy, just a hole in the wall place that only accepts cash, but the food was on point. I ordered a flounder sandwich which was huge and perfectly fried. My boyfriend order a jalapeño burger that he said was fantastic. It came out hot and fresh. We couldn't have asked for better. We can't wait to go back later this week it was that good.

  • Christine O.

We stopped by the Hatterasman on an impulse to get a quick snack. I went in thinking of ordering a hot dog. We ended up ordering a fried flounder sandwich and splitting it. Good thing cause the thing was huge. The flounder was fresh and certainly a real fish as it was still in fish shape. The fish was 4 times the size of the bun and although simple fare it was good. The sandwich came with shoestring style fries, also tasty. We also got an order of onion rings. They were tasty and not greasy. The locals dining at this place were very friendly and sociable

Great stop for a quick but good seafood meal or burger. Simple menu with fried seafood options and good skinny fries. Hush puppies were wonderful. Fried shrimp basket was very good. Kinda a hole In the wall dive decor but good for a quick stop or carry out.

The Hatterasman has been a staple for our vacation for several years. It has changed hands a few times over the years and it is hard to tell sometimes what you are getting with this place. The current owners do a nice job but the previous owners were my favorite, especially when they had sushi night. Oh well. The Hatterasman can be hit or miss. The BBQ is just ok for me (the previous owner's BBQ has become my benchmark for BBQ as it was amazing). The Crab Cake sandwich is ok. The Grouper sandwich is just ok. The oyster sandwich contains the best fried oysters available on the island. They have a nice, barely there, breading. The fries are good and addictive. They have nice local beers on tap. The comment about the "off-color" stickers is funny. I find the stickers mildly amusing and adds to the charm of the place.

  • Tiffany L.

Best crab cake sandwich I've ever had hands down!!!! I will be going back here if I'm down from Nags Head, heck I would consider making a trip to eat here!

    (5)
  • Doug K.

AWESOME french fries...decent burger and pretty good seafood options. It's divey, yes, but in a good way. I didn't think the stickers around the place were much of a concern, and I was there with young kids. They offer ice cream on the side, and it's a super casual place that you walk in off the beach. If you want simple and good in southern Hatteras Island, this is the place.

    (4)
  • L S.

Bbq pork was good, fries were good if you like skinny fries, burger was good too. Not a lot of seating, very casual. Lots of fried food. Good for a quick and easy bite if you're not too picky.

On a rainy day in Hatteras, early in the season there were only a handful of us in the Hatterasman. The folks at the counter could not have been sweeter, and took our order immediately. We ordered a grouper sandwich to share, onion rings and an fresh-brewed unsweetened tea and moved to a booth where there were a couple of current magazines on hand to read (nice touch!). The owner brought our basket to the booth, and without being asked had divided the meal in half for each of us. That's a really nice touch, considering couples like us are used to leaning over the same plate as we share meals big enough for two. And this sandwich certainly was. Even divided, the crispy fried grouper eclipsed the bun. The lettuce was fresh and the tartar offered a nice tang. The onion rings were batter-dipped sweet onions, delicious and crisp. And as an added touch, the owner tossed on a handful of shoe string French fries even though we subbed out for onion rings. Great authentic OBX joint with nice people at the best vacation spot in the world!

  • Richard E.

Having eaten here several times over the 20 years we have vacationed on Hatteras island, we found the food this trip to be just as good as always. The Flounder sandwich was superb, tasted "right off the boat". With fries, onion rings and a cold beer, I doubt you could de better for lunch. Their signature sandwich is also very good. Tastes GREAT but I call it, jokingly, a heart-attack-on-a-bun.

  • M P.

Not much to look at, but a Hatteras classic. I've been coming here since I was a child and have never been disappointed with the food. During our last visit, we ordered the flounder sandwich, mushroom burger, chili dog, and onion rings. Flounder was huge and fries were delicious (crispy shoe string). Burgers were flavorful. Hot dog was as to be expected from a chili dog. Onion rings were crispy. Fish sandwich was a little pricey, but all other items were reasonable. A bit inconvenient that they only take cash.

  • Elbert K.

A complete dive. Rednecky with country music for entertainment. The pictures posted by others for this place were either posted by friends or family because they look nothing close to what you get. The fries are good, but you can't that wrong. Everything else was horrible. The hamburger was atrocious....burnt patties that looked liked they came out of a frozen box from Cosco. The hush puppies were bad. The chicken cheese meal was okay. The seafood was dated. Bring cash! A plus is the corn hole set up outside the restaurant.

    (2)
  • Judy G.

This place is hole in the wall awesomeness. Bring cash. Limited hours during the off season (when we were there 11-3 during the week and 11-7 on weekends). Close to the ferry so you can grab to go and enjoy on your ferry ride (or in the ferry line). We had the cheesesteaks (one chicken and one steak) and they were both perfect. Fries are skinny and good as well. Another place we'll never miss when on the island.

    (5)
  • Kelly C.

First off, the place is a total dive - which in my book is a fantastic thing. That's where you usually find the best food and service. The Hattersman does not disappoint! Fast, friendly service and incredible food. The 'Hattersman Burger' was huge and ridiculously good along with the seasoned fries. The size of their hush puppies is insane, my husband and I have never seen any that large and we order them on a regular basis, these were great! They also have ice cream, which my kids loved. Add to that having corn hole set up outside and the fact that they deliver (for those lazy beach days) = unbeatable! We'll be back for years to come.

  • Shannon N.

This place is a dive with really good food! Beware, it's cash only, but there is an ATM really close by. My husband saw the sign for 'fried chicken' and was sold! He loved it! Crispy fried chicken with a really good biscuit and crispy straw fries. I had the BBQ sandwhich and slaw. It was really good NC BBQ! This is definitely a must stop in while on Hatteras Island. You won't be disappointed!

    (5)
  • Terri M.

Dive it was. Needs a good cleaning. Dust and grime on vents, ceiling fans, and all the wires and cables they have running along the ceiling. I had a burger it was eh....meat had flavor but they don't cook to order so to me it was well done and dry. It was very hot though which the fries were not. Husband and daughter had fried chicken which they both said was ok. Hush puppies were also bland. Staff didn't interact with us except to take order and bring us food. Walked right by the cashier on our way out and she never acknowledged us....We walked out smelling like the fryer :(

  • Lesley W.

Disappointed at my visit last week!! I was so looking forward to my good ole' minced pork NC style BBQ and that's not what they are now serving. It was shredded and already had hot sauce in it. I don't like hot sauce. Also, the cole slaw was missing. The cash only aspect was a surprise, thankfully I had a little cash. I just don't carry it much in the age of debit cards any longer. Last visit, prior to this, was about 2 or 3 years ago. I got a plate FULL of BBQ sandwich and fries and slaw and could n't begin to eat it all. Not the case any longer. I am sorry to see the old standard go as it was the first place I ever had that NC style BBQ. I was very disappointed in it this time.

I'm a huge burger fan, and the jalapeno burger from the Hatterasman... is probably my favorite burger I've EVER had! Yes, it's a dive, but it's super cool and has a lot of character. Amazing food. My Dad used to eat here in the 60's.. it's super cool to visit it still with him :)

  • Randolph R.

Great dive , exactly as advertised. French fries were great , hush puppies great , crab cakes very good (fresh). My kids had chicken strips and fries , my daughter 11 , a chicken strip and fries expert , gave it a 5 out 5. Sweet tea good. Ambience and decor were perfect and exactly what we were looking for on our lunch excursion from Rodanthe.

Cheap, fried things. Friendly staff. Great environment. You already know if this is your kind of place.

  • Christina W.

My boyfriend is a picky eater. He's not one to eat much seafood so when were we looking for a burger place on Sunday at 3pm, this was the only place we could find that was open. At first, we drove by it thinking it was a t-shirt shop. I even joked about the fried chicken sign out front. Turns out, their burgers are delicious. We were greeted by a few teenagers with tie-dye shirts on and we took one of the small booths by the front doors. There are also some picnic benches outside, along with some games out back like horseshoes. This is a great place to stop, especially if you have kids.

  • Edward A.

This place is alright, especially if you want a cheap (for Hatteras), unhealthy fried meal. The place smells strongly of fry oil. The food was pretty decent. The atmosphere was fine. My wife and I got the crab cake sandwich and the oyster sandwich. We both liked the oyster sandwich a lot better.

    (3)
  • David C.

Earthy. Real. The grouper in my sandwich was better than the grouper I paid $$$$ for last night. Beer is cold, too.

    (5)
  • Katelyn S.

Food was decent. Nothing to brag on. I had a tender basket and boyfriend had the big azz burger. Prices aren't too bad. Cheaper than most restaurants in the area. Will have to try something else next time!

This is what the Outer Banks was like in 1970s. Sure the bathrooms are "out back" and there's a gallon of paint to keep the mens' room door closed, but the food is excellent for a drive-in and the beer is cold. This should be everyone's first stop on Hatteras. You may find yourself there often, especially if you bike or have a dog you want to hang with outside. Come in barefoot, order the fish sandwich, grab a cold beer, roll up your sleeves and relax. (Moms with young children: bring hand wipes and put your desire to clean on hold for the length of the meal!)

  • Thom Z.

My family and I stopped in here a couple of times over the years. And we've always loved it. It's a bit small and, to people from big cities, dirty. But I always love this place. The food is good, the people are great and the atmosphere is authentic. Back when I was young, I'd enjoy their Bacon Cheesburger with much zeal, these days: the best I can hope to eat without suffering a heart attack is the crab cake. I love this place.

This is as real as it gets folks. If you want some good southern cooking pull off the road to this small establishment in Hatteras NC (OBX baby). The first time my friends and I needed a meal and to get away from the 7bed/7bath luxery beach mansion we were vacationing at, I happened upon the Hatterasman. It was the first place we saw as we ventured out into town. I ordered the bbq pork with chili cheese fires because I knew that if there was going to be one time in my life that I break the rules, it should be at this place. I impatiently waited like a child on the ride home because no one else wanted to dine inside the Hatterasman, the conversations full of vulgarities and chastisements as I argued why we should have stayed. When we finally got back to the beach house and sat down to eat we were all pleasantly surprised. The fries though, are what made this place. There attention to these fine slices of potato and the magnificent blend of seasonings made these the final step towards heart failure. I returned 3 more times on the trip. The $8 bbq pork meal was way better than the $9 salad I had somewhere else down the road. If you see this white and blue building on the east side of Highway 12 north of the ferry, stop in and try the fries.

Hatterasman is nothing special to look at but we enjoyed a good lunch that tasted great. Their pork BBQ had some good spice to it to go with the vinegar and the fries were tasty. Good place to stop on Hatteras Island.

The food is cheap, like homemade, and served by the friendliest people you'll meet. The store itself is cute and homey with big windows to watch people go by. I loved being able to pick out my own coffee mug. Highly recommended!

May look a bit sketch from the outside, but don't let that fool you. The food is great, especially the BBQ chicken. The huge quantity of thin fries is unbeatable. Make sure to try this joint at least once.

great if you like fried food! pretty affordable burgers and kids menu, too. had the fried shrimp and fried flounder. nothing special. those were the only seafood options besides a fried oyster sandwich. fries were tasty!

  • Boris R.

This place is very cool. Nothing fancy, old school farm-stand type of place. Amazing soft serve ice cream, made from real actual ice cream not yogurt, which is 99% of other places. The fried fish is very good, so are the burgers. The breakfast sandwiches are really great served on fluffy biscuits, and delicious egg made right. I wanted to not like this place honestly. I might admit to being a bit of a snob spoiled by northeastern restaurants, but man did we come back almost every day we spent in Hatteras. They were polite and real people. Additionally they seem to really care about the military, which I was told the owner was in for many years, and have all sorts of helpful info for men and women in it or out of it. This place does not judge and just serves great food. Don't change guys. The formula is right.

Total Dive, but the food was super good. Easy to find...easy to park...eat inside or out...play corn hole before or after...restroom is at the outside door. Our table was a channel marker. Ok, cool. You order at the counter. The server had no personality at all. Not friendly...no small talk...no smile...nothing. At least she made a good food recommendation when I asked her opinion. She suggested the Chicken Philly (CP). The CP was scrumptious! And the shoestring fries were pretty darn good too. The fries had a very good taste of seasoning. Totally not healthy food, but hey, we are on vacation. Didn't care too much for the soda water. They play country music. They cooked the food fast. The price was right. We enjoyed it.

Place is a dive like everyone said. But the pulled pork is amazing. The hush puppies were good also. Friends didn't like chicken sandwich. But did like crab cake.

Easy 5 stars. I have eaten here once a year since I was probably 9 years old for about 12 years. At 44 now, I was so happy to share my memories and great food with my kids here. Everything we ordered was perfect. Felt like I never left for a minute! Atmosphere terrific. They even had cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon in the cooler. I'm so happy this place has made it through the storms and still running so well with business. Very nice people.

Great eclectic local place for delicious burgers. They only take cash, hello 1970's. A neat place for lunch if you are in Hatteras.

We spent a week in hatteras, tried to have breakfast and were run out because we were late. 2nd attempt was a flounder sandwich that was decent. Ate here again (because the other kinda quick place in town was closed) & I had absolutely the worst BBQ I've ever had. Flavorless, unless you consider gelatinous fat a flavor. Truly awful. The best thing going here is the fries. The service is quick but not happy or helpful.

Made 17 mile bicycle trip from Avon and stopped here for breakfast. The breakfast bowl was amazing!

Hit this place on the way back home from ocracoke. The food was good, tasty shrimp and grouper for the wife and I. The girl who took our order was nice but it took like 20 minutes to get the food. During that time I killed like 10 flies at our table and the 4 guys in the back were very loud doing who knows what as there was only one other order in. Bags set in the back is a nice touch while waiting.

Breakfast is good, but burgers and barbecue sandwich and what you really want from here. The fries are great to season with what tastes like Rosemary and pepper.

What a hidden gem. My boyfriend and I were trying to find a restaurant for an evening date, but due to the offseason, most were closed. However, The Hatterasman was not. We decided to stop here based upon Yelp reviews and I'm so glad we did. We were greeted by a very nice man (the only one working) and he asked if we had ever been there before. After we told him no, he explained the menu a bit and gave his suggestions. He also gave us some time to look at the menu, which I loved. I didn't feel rushed at all. I decided on the bacon cheeseburger; my boyfriend ordered the mushroom Swiss burger (both come with fries). I wanted apple sauce as well, but it wasn't available due to the offseason. After we ordered, we helped ourselves to some (semi) sweet tea and sat in a corner booth. I was pleasantly surprised to find an I Spy book sitting on the window sill and it was enjoyable to look through it while waiting for our food. Our burgers arrived quickly and I was pleased with the portion size. They are all cooked well, which I wish was a changeable option, but it was still really good. The shoestring fries were even better. My boyfriend claimed they were the best fries he's ever eaten. I was disappointed to find that the ice cream shop inside wasn't open yet. Overall I'd definitely go back. The guy working was super nice and even gave us some coozies before we left. The food was good and it was a fun atmosphere. If you're looking for awesome dive/bar-like food, both surf & turf, this is the place to go.

The crabcake sandwich was amazing. Both me and my 9yr old daughter loved it. The fries are seasoned perfectly. The bacon cheeseburger was huge and the cheese steak was also perfect. Prices compare to similar style food in the area, but it was well worth it.

Not bad, a little on the greasy side but that's to be expected. The people were very polite which is the main reason for the high rating. But the breakfast we had was pretty average.

We eat here 3 to 5 times per season each time we visit the OBX. Burgers and shoe string fries are incredible. The soft shell crab sandwich (in season) is to die for. Flounder sandwich is absolutely huge and pretty tasty. Not fancy but darn good fried fare. Top off the meal with a visit to their mini ice cream parlor. New this year - pet goats!

Yummy home made biscuits. Casual lunch vibe. Real down home friendly feel to this place. Enjoyed it.

Don't let the cover dissuade you from stopping in to this throw back in time drive in. It is in what looks like an old service station just as you pull into Hatteras. The menu and specials are all hand written and betray the fresh, rotating variety of seafood that is available. The fish is mostly fried but it is perfectly done and very well priced for the quality. Oyster sandwiches and grouper were rocking last time. The owner is usually walking about taking orders or running food. He takes pride in his product and should considering it keeps up with the pricer options near the docks. Stop by for lunch, dinner some soft serve ice cream or the corn hole tournament held week nights in the side yard.

We read recent yelp reviews and thought we'd stop in. Friendly order taker explained the menu, as this was our first time. Wife got 1/4 lb. cheeseburger and scrumptious fries. I enjoyed catch of day fish sandwich, fries, and slaw. We met the owner who is a very proud Veteran and shared his dreams for a next door, small veterans park. Also Hatterasman sponsors an informal monthly, Past and Present Veterans meeting for Americas Best to just rap and socialize. We salute you Sir and your family . We will be back.

This place looks like a dive, but don't let that fool you. Great burgers in a good atmosphere! Would recommend!

First place my husband and I ate here in Hatteras. The place is a dive with surfing stickers every where, but the food is fantastic. We got crab cake sandwiches, and every thing comes with fries. The fries were tiny strips, but they were delish! They have homemade hush puppies that were divine. As a side note, they only take cash.

Average fried food. Good philly cheese steak. Loved the relaxed atmosphere and the chicken out front laying eggs. Open on Sundays!!!

Fix your new tables. Can't slide legs under them. Too low!!! Also stop shorting me on the fries. Basket was seriously light last night. Love this place and yes it's a dive. But fix a few things please! Tables you just built too low. My 5'10" frame can't fit. Ordered grouper and only got a few fries. But otherwise it was perfect.

Believe the descriptions that call this a dive. I had to hunt down the owner out back to get service, and the guys who worked there seemed annoyed to be disturbed from a smoke break behind the kitchen. I held out hope that the food would be good enough to compensate for the negatives, but I was disappointed. The fish sandwich was ok, but not worth a special trip by any means.

Despite the food being good, i was not happy when i saw the lazy kitchen staff taking their sweet time chatting and seeming to not care how long they took to make our food
