One of the best places to eat in Greensboro metro! My family and I live closer to Wilkesboro, so everytime we come to Greensboro, we stop here and eat. It's a must! Today, service was lacking which is disappointing because we usually never have bad service. So bad in fact, we didn't even leave a tip which is rare. She didn't know answers to questions about the menu, never once refilled our drink much less asked if we'd like a refill, didn't give us any straws or napkins, and didn't ask if we needed to go boxes or wanted any dessert. Food was great as usual. I had fried chicken, mac n cheese, stuffed zucchini, and cornbread. I will have to say the zucchini could have used a lot less chili powder (that's all I could really taste). My husband had hamburger steak, fries, and a side salad. My son had mac n cheese, fries, and green beans. I love their apple butter and biscuits. Such a great combo. We will always return!

I can only compliment the biscuits for breakfast. They are delicious. As for the quality of the other food we ate for breakfast, not so much. For the amount of money you spend per breakfast plate, you should definitely choose another breakfast destination! I just had a sausage, egg & cheese biscuit and it was mediocre at best. Biscuit was good, egg was made wrong and I had to request what I ordered and the cheese was definitely processed and not even melted onto the sausage. My boyfriend got some breakfast plate with a moose cake, their version of a pancake. The server brought out his 2 plates; with one plate resting on top of the actual pancake!! Gross. She said it was bc the plates were hot. Omg seriously?! There were dead flies all over the ledge next to our booth. See pic. And dust was everywhere on the top of the booth. Last trip to Moose Cafe. Never. Again.

This place offers a big country breakfast that will ruin any plans you may have for the day that does not involve looking at the back of your eye lids! I love the potato casserole and ham portion sizes.

This is one of those restaurants that you visit every two months or so, may be a little more often when the weather turns cold, and real Southern comfort food tastes even better. It was fairly busy this cold, Friday morning, with some finishing up a late breakfast, while others like us, were looking for an early lunch. Despite the number of folks there and the switch over from breakfast to lunch, the service was excellent, including the time for our order out of the kitchen. The Chicken Fried Steak ($7.99) remains as good as any in the area, probably as good as any in the state. The meat is very good quality, the breading is excellent, the cooking is perfect, and the white gravy is superb - thick, rich, and with plenty of ground black pepper to provide the zing at the end. The Mashed Potatoes are real, and put some more of that white gravy on them and you are good to go. The Fried Chicken ($6.99 for a 1/4) is very, very good - excellent crust, well seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The Chicken & Dumpling side (it is soooo cool that you can get this as a side) is amazing - it is absolutely loaded with great tasting chicken, and the dumplings are the thick, gotta chew through them kind, with equally good flavor - this is like getting two entrees for the price of one! I tried the Beef Vegetable Soup as another side (I know, soup as a side is a bit weird, but it was cold, & it WAS SOUP!) and was not really impressed - fully of stuff, but rather sweet, lacked any real crisp taste, otherwise. The corn bread was very nice, and the complimentary biscuits (Cat Head biscuits, these are) are addictive - be careful or you'll fill up on them. I like this place - it was Farm To Table before Farm To Table was cool (Sorry Barbara) - but it is certainly a restaurant where you need to know how the menu matches up with your tastes. This is Southern Country Cooking - heavy on the calories, heavy on the fat, heavy on the flavors - even with the vegetables, the bread, the sides! Thank Goodness!

I like this place, but don't go at 3:00. Mac and cheeses was like flour paste it was so overcooked, and no cornbread for the pinto beans. Go for breakfast only!!

I was not a huge fan. It is a great location if you are visiting the farmers market and want to grab a bite to eat. I liked the apple butter but wasn't a huge fan of the biscuit. But after all it was free so I do think that is a neat touch. I wasn't a fan of my sausage patties they seemed like they weren't heated up all the way. My eggs were cooked perfectly over medium! Service was sparse but it did seem like she had a huge part of the room to cover. Not in a rush to go back but if my dining companion was super into it I wouldn't not go again.

If you are breaking a fast and need a massive meal, this can be your place. We went for breakfast and the portions are huge... And I'm a big eater. We started with the complimentary biscuits and apple butter. The biscuits are pretty big and very heavy. They were moist and pretty dense as far as biscuits go and were very fresh and warm. The apple butter is almost like a cold apple sauce. My wife had their 1-2-3 Breakfast which came with a Moose Cake which is a massive pancake that she could not finish, 2 eggs and 3 strips of bacon. Our boys opted for the Stuffed French Toast. It was made with Hawaiian Bread, then had a slathering of cream cheese and strawberries between the pieces. They liked it, but it's also a good sized portion and they suffered a sugar crash later. I had the Farmer's Omelet. I'm not sure how many eggs were involved, I'm guessing 4. It was like a burrito but with an egg around the outside instead of a tortilla. This thing does not lay on your plate in a flat half circle. It looks like a mega burrito. It was stuffed with bacon, sausage, peppers, onions, cheese and mushrooms then topped with a "cheese gravy" and more cheese. The sauce was almost like a be bechamel sauce for macaroni and cheese. This was served with cheesy hash brown casserole and biscuits and gravy. I'm a big guy and can put away a couple of pounds of food in one sitting, but only finished 3/4 of my omelet, all of the hash browns and didn't even touch the biscuit and gravy. Perhaps the biscuit at the start of breakfast did me in. Most of the breakfast meals were priced at $7.99, including an all you can eat option. The Farmers Omelet was $8.99 and was a bargain considering how much food you get. The food was all served fast, hot and was tasty. It's all simple country style cooking, nothing too fancy and nothing too expensive. The service was on point today as well. It's a great place to grab breakfast, then walk it off at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market next door.

My cousin took me here for breakfast while I was visiting her a few weeks ago. We both ordered different things so I could try a bit of it all. I really enjoyed the biscuits and the apple butter was good too, different from what I was raised on. I'm used to apple butter that is processed very fine, smoother than apple sauce. I actually bought a jar of it to bring home. The hash brown casserole was good. Everything else was just ok. The moose cake in my opinion was tough, the grits were not creamy and did not have any flavor, the bacon was very thin. Service was good and food came out quickly. I would consider trying them again sometime but wouldn't go out of my way to do so. Or maybe I would just stop by to grab a jar of apple butter to take home.

My review for this restaurant is mainly based on the service. The staff is extra nice and attentive. The food was fairly standard. It wasn't bad, but there was no wow factor. I ordered the loaded burger steak, which is basically a huge piece of ground beef slathered with a mushroom and onion gravy with bacon on top. It was okay, the bacon was the best thing on the plate because it had a nice smokey flavor. The burger itself was okay, but was a little bland. The dish cane with two sides , so I orders green beans and collard greens. The green beans were awesome, the best f*ckin green beans I've had on the east coast. Collards were good, but nothing special. You get a free biscuit with jam. Both were pretty good. All together with a Pepsi, I only spent about 15$. Pretty decent if you ask me.

The best breakfast in town !!! Nothing like some home cooking to fill your belly. Must try!! And when you are around on he weekends the farmers market is good to walk off those great biscuits

Wow! One of the best and most filling breakfasts I have ever had! Went with my Moms on a Wednesday morning. We were greeting warmly immediately upon entering, and asked for our seating preference (booth or table). We chose a booth and were seated right away. The decor is country and welcoming, but not as touristy as Cracker Barrel. As soon as we sat down we were served coffee and two huge biscuits with their famous homemade apple butter- wow those were a meal in themselves! They do offer an all you can eat breakfast for $7.49 which is very popular. However, my mom had the breakfast special which came with ANOTHER biscuit and myself the Angus Skillet- I wish I had taken a picture, but I dug in right away! Delicious- the potatoes were great- not over cooked or over seasoned. They advertise local ingredients and everything indeed tasted fresh. We both had HUGE meals and coffee for 19.00- we were full until about 4pm! I can't wait to go back!

  • Christina T.

Let's see - The service was good. We never went without refills and the food was prepared and to our table quickly. However, the food was mediocre. It lacked serious flavor. I had baked chicken & dressing and my husband had chicken and dumplings. Both required lots of salt & pepper at the table to make them have any flavor at all. I wanted to love this place. It's close to work, and the farm to table idea is awesome, especially when you think that they are located within a farmer's market AND fruits & veggies are plentiful this time of year.

I"d heard about Moose Cafe for a long time. So, we finally decided to go for breakfast. The initial biscuits and apple butter were delicious. The rest was disappointing. The omelet and pancake were bland and heavy. Most likely won't go back.

    (3)
  • Carol W.

Just ok. Biscuits were good. My husband really liked the scrambled eggs. I got the veggie omelet; wouldn't get it again. The hash brown casserole was ok, nothing to write home about if you ask me. Gravy good though it tastes like a mix to me. Grits were a bit too runny for my taste and they came out cold. Not a place for a quick bite; took forever to get our food. It was very busy though (of course it was a Saturday at the farmers market and there was an event going on). Also, wood floors were very slippery! My husband and I both had on sneakers and were sliding on them. Be careful!

I'm not from the area and was looking for a good place to have breakfast. The restaurant is well maintained, clean, and has a back woods country feel to it. Think Cracker Barrel without the corporate/chain influence. The service was exceptional. Our waitress was friendly, accommodating, fast, and came complete with a genuine country twang. Everyone else working there seemed to be hustling as well to make sure all the patrons were well fed and happy. WARNING: Be hungry if you decide to dine here. Breakfast began with a courtesy Fred Flintstone sized biscuit for each of us. The biscuits were big, light, fluffy and came with apple butter spread which tasted curiously like the filling of an apple pie. Yum! I ordered the Farmer's Omelet which was mammoth. I later learned it took 5 eggs to put this beast of an omelet together. The omelet was delicious and it was evident the fresh ingredients were locally grown and likely from the Farmers Market next door. The only bad thing about this place is I could barely eat 1/2 of my meal. It was just too much food! Good prices, exceptional service, and great food. If you love a big breakfast, are looking to have a "cheat day" from your diet, or just want to channel your inner glutton, add this place to your list. 5 stars...

Huge huge huge portions, which I love. The breakfast is great. Omelettes and biscuits are large and filling. You will certainly have enough food here. Located in the back of the Farmers Market. Convenient location in the Triad.

Had my first experience eating at the Moose Cafe last weekend. While the portions were big they were mostly bland. I did prefer this above the Cracker Barrel. The biscuits were nice along with the apple butter they served. I had gotten the meatloaf which was a huge portion but after about 3 bites, reality set in that it was just a flavorless chunck of meatloaf. My two sides were a side salad with ranch dressing that was watery and mac and cheese which offered more in looks then flavor.

We frequent the moose cafe when we stop by the farmer's market. Service has also been quick, though sometimes the waitress will forget to bring something out (presumably because it's often very busy and things get a little hectic). Food is always good. Typical southern cuisine. drinks are served in mason jars, and they serve biscuits the size of a grown man's hand. Side note: the breakfast skillets are HUGE! Definitely enough for 2 people to split (and I'm not a dainty eater).

  • Sally M.

We hadn't been to the moose cafe in a while. Now I remember why. My vegetable soup was good but I thought a little high. My friend had chicken & dumplings . The dumplings were real yellow. Never seen any that looked like that. Our waitress said she would swap them for something else. He might have done that but we never saw her again. We had to get somebody to give us our checks. I don't think we'll be back there again.

I have only been once, on the way through town, and maybe it was an off day, but the all around experience was poor. We went for dinner, we never got our drinks. Our waitress never checked on us after bringing out our food. The food tasted as though it had been cooked in a dirty pan, and the person eating with me ordered a side of tomatoes that were very unripe and poor considering it's next to a farmers market. Unfortunately it is not a restaurant I will be visiting again.

My husband and I went for supper May 29, 2015 at 7:00pm. I want to start by saying that our waitress, Bianca was very friendly, she always checked on us to see if we needed anything. The food was delicious !! Bianca's personality and attention to her customers was superb. It's refreshing to see someone like Bianca that has the perfect attitude and attention to detail for her customers!!!!!

This was a great experience. The menu is large and contains an array of different options ranging from eggs and bacon to hashbrown casserole and home fries. The wait staff is very friendly and very speedy. The food came out before I could even finish my coffee! The food was amazing. Great southern breakfast items!

The food here is good Ole country cooking. We had superior service by Amber who was a charming young lady. Your get your money's worth_ come hungry. The all you can eat bbq is great!

  • Michael S.

I have to give this 4 stars based on one thing. It's just, good! Don't be turned off by the plain interior, room full of country folks, and questionable service at times! The huge biscuits they bring out with homemade apple butter is good. I question whether the vegetables are indeed fresh (place is located at a farmers market), but nonetheless, they are nicely seasoned! The buttermilk chicken breasts are indeed two Large fried breasts so come hungry! Chicken and Dumplings are their specialty and it too is good! Friday's feature all you can eat fried fish with unlimited sides for $9.99! If two of you do it, the second is for just $5! Saturday's are all you can eat BBQ pork, ribs, and chicken for $9.99! These two nights will allow you to sample several of their sides, which to me is the fun part! Nothing fancy or gourmet about this place, but the food is just consistantly solid!

So based on the other reviews and the fact that this place does business surrounded by a farmers market, I was excited for some fresh, made to order food. I was disappointed. The ambiance, checkered table clothes, bright windows, and the cute mason glass water glasses, plus an extensive menu made for a good start. The food was disappointing though. The portions were huge- buffet style huge, but the quality was just not there. The eggs were fine and the pancake was fine, but nothing to write home about. The pancake would have been better if they had real maple syrup and not the fake stuff or fake butter. The home fries and sausages just tasted assembly line to me. If someone really wanted to go back, I'd go back and get fried eggs over medium (my friend had them) and a muffin......

Decent place. Price is right and the staff was friendly. You won't be disappointed nor will you be blown away by the food.

After all the bluster from this restaurant about how they great they are, I've got to say I found it pretty underwhelming. The food was certainly tasty, but for a $9 breakfast, I really expected a lot more. I ordered one of their breakfast specials, which when I actually got it at my table, it was basically a couple eggs, some grits and a piece of livermush. I expected more from my highly priced breakfast that was called a "hillbilly breakfast", the descriptions made it sound like more. They left a couple biscuits and some apple butter at the table. Both were fine. The apple butter wasn't the best I've had by a stretch and the biscuits tasted like they were made from a can. Again, it wasn't a bad breakfast, but I would have just expected more for the price and the awards they've won. The place is nice and the service was good enough. It was just underwhelming for the price.

You better be hungry! It's good ole Fashion country food served by good people in a very casual atmosphere. Buttermilk fried chix and hamburg steak were serious eats.

Omigosh. Best breakfast ever! I can't wait to get back to Colfax to try lunch and dinner. The biscuits are out of this world. Everything was fresh and yummy.

Came here with four other family members on our way to Myrtle Beach. On a Friday night around 7PM, we had no wait. Our server was very friendly and even double checked that all the items I ordered on the veggie plate were in fact vegetarian (the collard greens and pinto beans have pork in them, fellow veggies!). I had fried okra, mac & cheese, cheesy grits, and corn on the cob - all both in season and well-seasoned. My family members got ribs, breaded trout, all-you-can-eat seafood and chicken tenders. Biscuits came out with apple butter before the meal and everyone got cornbread with their meals. All of our portions were large and we left full and happy. The surrounding farmers market and garden shop that share the parking lot look like good spaces to check out on a weekend.

Sorry. I did NOT enjoy. Service was decent but waitress got my order wrong. Food was below average. Flies were EVERYWHERE. It was dirty. There was food on the floor all over the place. Table was sticky. I won't be going back and I visit the farmers market often.

Breakfast is awesome. Biscuits are amazing. Ingredients are from local farms. Moosecakes aka pancakes are huge and delicious.

The Moose Cafe is absolutely amazing! Quick and friendly service, nice atmosphere, and huge portions of amazing breakfast food. I had the Farmer's Omelet with hash-brown casserole and it was the best breakfast I've had in a long time. Everything was perfectly seasoned and hearty. The tea is a little sweet so you may want to get half unsweet tea if you don't like a lot of sugar. I will definitely come back next time I visit the area.

This is good old Carolina at its best. Pulled pork fried okra grits. Not fancy. Just good. Service was fast and thoughtful.

Maybe I went on a bad morning. I wanted to give this place a try since it's right around the corner for my house and I see updates on Facebook of people eating here. So I tried they're breakfast. It's about the same price range as ihop, but the food was definitely not worth the price. There was nothing special about it, I wish I went to ihop instead.

Let me start by saying I was forewarned that this is a casual country restaurant, so the vinyl table clothes etc were expected. Once at a table the wait staff was on top of everything and right away we were given two warm fresh biscuits and their chunky homemade apple butter. (Almost like an apple sauce) It was very good. The meals are reasonably priced and you get the right portion for the money as well. they don't overdo the amount of food you get. All of it was solid, not incredible food but very good. I had the roast turkey, some Virginia ham, collards and green beans. Each was very tasty. Also a nice chunk of cornbread, which was warm and melted the butter easily. My wife had the pulled pork and the grilled chicken. Both were great and not too saucy. We will go back so we can try the meatloaf and the trout just to get a sense of more of the menu. We had beverages and the bill was $25. Incredibly affordable and we have leftovers. It exceeded expectations and if we are in that area and looking for simple, good country food we will go back.

My first real authentic Southern meal. Collard greens were fantastic, and the corn bread, and the biscuit, and the pulled pork. Only the grits were 'just OK' but I have yet to be impressed by ANY grits.

(4.5 stars) At first glance, The Moose Café looks like a less corporate Cracker Barrel. The menu screams "country" and you walk by the store upon entry. However, there is much more to this establishment than meets the eye. For starters, the variety is astounding. We arrived between breakfast and lunch and perused one of each menu, each of which came with an insert for specials. On the breakfast side, you'll find everything from hearty combination plates (eggs, pancakes, grits, meat, etc.) to omelets and skillets. The lunch selections read like management mugged a Southern grandmother. Chicken and biscuits, pulled pork, fried chicken, collards, and slaw are all accounted for here. No matter what you opt for, you'll be able to enjoy it with complimentary biscuits and apple butter, both of which taste fresh, homemade, and delicious. Whatever you pick, you will likely receive lots of it. Portion sizes are plentiful, and the pricing is unbeatable. The lunch plates typically range from $7-$8 and include two sides and cornbread. Each plate easily yields two meals' worth of food, which may make you feel bad the next time you drop $8 on a sandwich. The execution here is mostly spot-on. Though "homemade" is often an empty buzzword, the farmer's market location adds credence to the concept, and several items can be sourced to specific local farms. Plus, your taste buds will do their own convincing. The pulled pork had a pleasantly surprising sweetness, the sweet potato casserole (made from roasted potatoes) was smoky and melt-in-your-mouth good, and the fried green tomatoes were simply but enjoyable. Even the few missteps are forgivable. An oily succotash redeemed itself by packing an unexpected kick and creamy-but-bland cheese grits were nothing some pepper couldn't fix. The sweet tea, served in glass jars, was the genuine article. Given the busyness of the farmer's market when we arrived, service was impressively quick. We were seated with zero wait time, and our food came out earlier than expected. Despite the high volume of patrons, both our hostess and our server were friendly to a fault. The one slip-up - my companion received non-sweet instead of sweet tea - was quickly and apologetically corrected. Country cooking, perhaps understandably, gets a bad rap, but The Moose Café can make a believer out of you. If you're at the farmer's market, it's a must-stop, and if you aren't, it's well worth the drive. What you spend on gas, you'll save on the leftovers you'll inevitably have, and your stomach will thank you for it.

My family and I were really impressed with our experience at The Moose Cafe. Although it was busy inside, we sat immediately and were greeted by our server, who brought complimentary biscuits. They were large and fluffy, and paired well with the apple cinnamon spread. As for our actual order, the food was great. The Farmer's Choice boasted tasty, but perhaps slightly under ripened tomatoes with delicious sawmill gravy to accompany extra biscuits and fresh eggs. Our server made sure we had full mugs of coffee and water to drink and was very friendly. Although the coffee was all right, it certainly wasn't worth almost $3 for a cup. Our experience was really great, we'll definitely have to come back the next time before we hit the Farmer's Market.

One word: biscuits. Their biscuits are amazing. Huge, fluffy, and tasty. They serve them with a type of apple compote. Those bodacious biscuits were just a warm up compared to the feast we got for our main meal. I ordered the farmer's market breakfast, which includes: 2 scrambled eggs, sliced tomatoes, gravy and biscuit, fresh fruit, and turkey sausage. I knew I wouldn't be able to eat all of that, but what remained after I finished could have fed 4 people! All for about $8. My fiance ordered their steak skillet, which had about 2lbs worth of potatoes in it. He loved his. Our friends got the stuffed french toast and the veggie omelet. They both said theirs was very good. The service was great and the food came out fast. I'm definitely going back for more!

This place is a stand alone building located in the Farmers Market. It has a very good Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner menu. Service was very good and prices were reasonable. I had the "Grandma's Meatloaf" with mashed potatoes & gravy and fresh collard greens $7.99 . All meals come with 2 veggies, hot homemade buscuits and apple butter and cornbread.

Went to the Moose Cafe on our last day in North Carolina for breakfast and to see the car show. Arrived at 10:00 am and was seated very fast. The waiter asked us if we wanted coffee and returned with the coffee and sweet tea with some biscuits and apple butter. We placed our orders and waited------and waited. The table next to our table was cleaned and new arrivals were seated. They too were given their coffee and biscuits and placed their orders. The waiter told us there was a backup in the kitchen and our food should be out soon. Forty minutes went by and she came over with a tray full of food and started placing it down, it was then that she realized that the food belonged to the table next to us and that our food was not ready. At this point I told her I was leaving as it was 45 minutes and we did not get our breakfast but the table next to us was served in 10 minutes. I left the place and will never be back.

Went here with friends since it waa given such good reviews. I didn't feel that it was all that it was made out to be. I ordered the fried chicken, mac and cheese, and greens none of which had much flavor and the chicken and greens were bland and not seasoned well. The service was fine but I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.

My husband and I were at the Farmers Market during the holidays and decided this was a must for breakfast. I enjoyed half a biscuit ( could not imagine an entire biscuit ) Both impressive in flavor and SIZE!!!! Soft and flakey. Apple butter to die for. Knowing the calories consumed during the holidays I opted for turkey sausage and eggs over medium. Perfect eggs and the sausage was probably the best turkey sausage I have enjoyed. Sampled the chicken salad and purchased a pound for an upcoming party we were attending. Very good. My husband ordered a featured breakfast platter that is not for the meek....wholly cow ( no pun ). He was eating for days. He assured me everything was wonderful but that he would probably not eat again until the next day. Lol. A must try if you find yourself in the area and craving good home cooking.

My grandmother never cooked this good.... Seriously, this place screams good old southern cooking from the gigantic buttermilk biscuits to the homemade apple butter to the sour cream hash brown casserole. The food NEVER disappoints. On the other hand, the service tends to be spotty. Cross your fingers for a good server!

The food is amazing! Biscuits are freshly baked and served warm-yummy! :) The fried chicken and mashed potatoes..SO GOOD!! Everything was amazing! Southern comfort farm-to-table cooking. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here; it is a favorite of my coworkers, so we eat here at least a couple of times a month. Large portions that usually are finished off by a coworker because I can't, and very reasonable prices.

  • Jeannie H.

This was so disappointing. My family went to dinner on a Saturday evening. The mac & cheese tasted like wallpaper paste. The grits were the consistency of soup (water with a few lumps). The chicken and dumplings was just a thick mush...no dumplings, just mush. The cornbread was very dry. My son's milk smelled as if it had expired a few days ago. And the sweet potato was just pitiful. For a restaurant that claims to be great southern food, they have a long way to go. As if that wasn't bad enough, the wait service was extremely poor. When we paid the bill we informed the staff of our displeasure. The manager simply turned and walked away. Poor food and poor service.

I'll echo everything positive about this place. The food is fantastic (loved the baked Vidalia onions and biscuits with warm apple butter). The help is helpful and pleasant. The prices are surprisingly good for locally grown food. 4 1/2 stars for me.

They had me at the biscuits, served as soon as we sat down. I'd recommend the barbecue chicken platter with sides of baked Vidalia onion (a must) and collards. Love.

I have been here for breakfast and lunch. The biscuits are amazing... I am not a fan of the apple butter. Maybe I am just more used to the smooth variety. The breakfast was good. I wasn't a fan of the overly breaded tenderloin because it seemed like it took me forever to get to the meat, but the gravy was good. My husband and I also enjoyed lunch, but my daughter wasn't a fan. I think that it was because there wasn't a lot of seasoning in the vegetables.

We weren't too sure about this place when we first pulled in, but when we got inside, we knew this was the place to be. This place is jamming, if you are looking for good eats, it is here. They are a true southern cooking place, and we are planning on this place to always be our Sunday morning choice for breakfast. The biscuits are ok, but the apple chutney they serve with them are divine. My daughter had a moose cake, at it was huge and really good. My husband and I had the all you can eat breakfast, and they basically bring you this big plate of food and whatever else you want, you just ask as you go. I broke my Vegan diet, and at some bacon and eggs.....and holy cow was it worth every bite. There potato dish they serve with it, was heaven in my mouth, and I am looking forward to eating that again this Sunday. Stop in, this place will put any Cracker Barrel to shame!!!!

I'm not sure what restaurant the 4-5 star reviewers visited, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Moose Cafe. I've been there 5-6 times and the food has been consistently sub par. Not terrible mind you, but just not very good. I have always wondered about the awards and testimonials seen scattered around the restaurant, because NOTHING in my experience would lead me to think this restaurant was deserving of such praise. Service has always been fine, but the food, while consistent, has been consistently ho-hum. I've never had a biscuit that was less than several hours old, and their "apple butter" is just chunky apple sauce. Not similar to apple butter in any way. Seriously, they bake their biscuits in the morning and hold them all day! Biscuits take like 14 minutes to bake and should be an hourly prep item if they're going to be on the menu. As to other food, most of what I sampled was forgettable, but the meatloaf was excellent, and the vegetables ranged from "straight from the can" to well seasoned and tasty. Pretty much hit or miss. Take your chances, but this is definitely not a "Go To" type restaurant. Better choices abound. And lastly, all this talk about their being located at the farmers market, implying that their food is somehow fresher is killing me. They don't get their food from the farmers market. They get their food from U.S. Foods, IFH, Sysco, and other commercial vendors just like Cracker Barrel and Golden Corral, among others. They just don't prepare it as well as these other two options once it enters their kitchen.

I've eaten here two times and both experiences were very good. Food was delicious and there was plenty of it. For home style country cooking, I highly recommend this restaurant.

We went to the farmers market today had a Great time so we decided to eat at the moose cafe. The tiles on the celling are brown with stains the tables were filthy the baby seat had food in it we had to wipe everything down before we could sit down. Then we ordered our food the chicken dish my wife got looked like crap and tasted like it looked. The only thing I eat was the meatloaf it was very disappointing and will never go there again.

I had the Angus Skillet with no bacon or cheese and the beef had no seasoning, the biscuits were ok and the apple butter was not hot. I have eaten here during a function it was good. The waitress seemed too busy to tend properly to our table of 3 people.

For country cooking this is as good as it gets. The biscuits are good and you get plenty of food. I really like the fried trout. It was crispy and fixed just right. If you go on Saturday it is usually crowded. It is worth the wait.

Food and Farmers Market always a winning combination. This is a great place to eat breakfast, they have a huge menu, biscuits and apple butter are on the house. Decent coffee. My only complaint would be that the table was stocked with margerine and not butter which is what a place like this should be offering. Still a great place for southern breakfast. The first time I came here, I was put off by the fact that my eggs came soft scrambled, I have never been anywhere where that happened to me before. Make sure to specify.

Loved the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Gravy. Grean beans done like how my grandma would do them. Corn bread too dry for my tastes, but I like it moist like how I like my orange cake. Sweet tea was perfect.

I found this place on a whim. Saw the Farmers Market from Hwy 40, decided to stop. Walked around for a bit, got hungry and stopped in for some Southern style food. I was blown away! Fantastic tasting food, quality, portions and service. Needed a wheelbarrow to roll me outta there. Will stop again next time I'm driving thru the area!

They sure give you lots of food at the Moose Cafe! When we sat down we were served two huge warm biscuits with apple butter. Delicious! The menu was extensive, similar to Cracker Barrel's fare. Roy ordered fried fish (two very large pieces), potatoes, and cabbage casserole. I ordered a vegetable plate - four of the side items offered: vegetable soup, chicken casserole, slaw, and green beans. Although, Moose's website indicates that because they are located inside the Farmer's Market, they offer fresh vegetables, that was not the case with the food we ate.The vegetables in my soup and casserole were of the canned VEG-ALL sort. Of course, it is February after all. Our server was conscientious and attentive. We asked for take-out boxes and had enough left over for another meal at home.

NO NO NO NO!!! This is not fresh food from local farmers. In fact there is a large wholesale food distributor just behind the Moose Cafe. Not sure what all the rave is about? Either you have no idea what authentic home-style cooking is or your are just super impressed with the portion size of their food. Dined there several times and each time I am reminded why this isn't a favorite of mine. Biscuits were hard, apple butter had way to much spice, and the grits were just the blandest stuff I have ever put in my mouth. I did enjoy the mac-n-cheese but couldn't look past the flies that where buzzing around me at the window seat. Left the men's restroom in a hurry it was like a dark dirty dungeon and upon exiting you are likely to be greeted by the Cafe's pet cats begging for scraps.

***This review is only covering breakfasts*** We've eaten a number of breakfasts here when we come out to the Piedmont Triad Farmer's Market. We'd eat here more often if it wasn't across town from us. Every time we've been here there has been a steady stream of fellow patrons, as well. Here is what the Moose does well: tasty, filling meals (again, I can only speak to breakfasts here) served in an airy, open space by a fast and friendly staff at very reasonable rates. Essentially all choices are of the "southern" theme. What you are not going to get, from my experience, is unique 'right-from-the-field' options. I'm always a little disappointed in that since the location is literally yards away from some of the best local produce, beef, poultry and dairy suppliers. If they do leverage those resources, they certainly don't brag about it. The breakfast menu has a good variety of options from breakfast plates, Moosecakes (pancakes), french toast omelets to plain ole biscuits. Prices basically range from about $2 (plain biscuit) to about $9 for the big-big breakfast plate. They even have a standing all you can eat breakfast ($7) that includes scrambled eggs, biscuit, bacon, sausage, grits and a delicious potato side. Typically, all you can eat ends up being just one serving for me! I will say I respectfully disagree with an early review about the saltiness (and I'm not a fan of salt either), especially regarding the biscuits. In my opinion, Moose does there biscuits very, very well. They are always warm and most with just enough density to hold themselves together. Are they a bit salty? Yes. But salt is a basic ingredient in any real biscuit (hey, flour only tastes so good...) And they are served with a cinnamon-y apple butter that goes perfectly with them. I usually take at least one home with me. One of these years I may make it over there for lunch or dinner but, for now, I'm quite happy doing breakfasts on pretty weekend mornings. Food: 7/10; Service 7/10; Value 8/10; Atmosphere 6/10

Buttermilk chicken is the way to go! Probably the best white gravy I have ever had! Definitely my favorite place to have breakfast. My eggs were great and homefries are delicious. Service is always friendly and prompt. The atmosphere is great, family friendly and you can walk off all that white gravy at the farmer's market afterwards. One tip.. make sure you go Hungry, they give you a TON of food!

Good southern cooking with lots of yummy veggies. My son absolutely devoured the biscuits, which come with hot apple butter. I had the Virginia Ham which was as big as my head! The place was packed and we were worried the wait was going to be long, but she said 5-10 minutes when we checked in, and that is all that it was. The service was great, and my favorite part was when the little old man next to us started doing magic tricks for my son and his friend. After eating we walked to the farmers market to do some flower shopping and to get the boys some hand dipped ice cream. The perfect Sunday outing!

Short and sweet. The breakfast food was ok. The wait staff moves in hyper mode but were not able or are not trained to listen. Too many 2nd & 3rd request for simple things like butter, coffee, etc. We were not the only table with service issues, we witnessed others with similar problems. Our table of six left full but with a thumbs down attitude. Our date of visit was Saturday 8/18/12.

While visiting my parents, they wanted to go to the farmer's market since they had never been there before. While there, we decided to try the restaurant for our lunch. Since I have many "farm to table" choices in Atlanta, where I live, I was anxious to see what was in store here. I, and my parents, were sorely disappointed. The highlight of the meal was the biscuit and apples brought to the table at the beginning. Mother ordered the baked chicken, I had the mustard chicken, father ordered shrimp with grits. Everything was so bland! No seasoning on anything. Side dishes were sad things with very little flavor. The main entrees were likewise tasteless. Portion sizes were generous, but none of us had any desire to finish the meal. Seriously, I've had better food at a cafeteria. The service was very good, quick and pleasant, but sadly the food just did not live up to the reputation. While my parents expressed a desire to return to the farmers market later in the season, none of us will be back to the restaurant.

Dreadful service. I visited at lunch. The restaurant was not busy at all. The waitress took my order, which I not only read exactly to her, but pointed to on the menu. Someone else brought out the food. The order was wrong. It was corrected by the same person who brought it to me. My tea was empty for some time. Even though there were several waitresses hanging about, not one would acknowledge when I was trying to get their attention to get more tea. Finally, the waitress came by and brought some. She never apologized for her error. As for the food, I got the Buttermilk Chicken. It needed more gravy as the meat was dry as was the cornbread. I really wanted some real butter to try to rescue the cornbread, but all that is offered is "Whipped Petrochemical" spread. This restaurant is at a Farmers Market and advertises best use of fresh ingredients. I swear the green beans were canned... and full of stems. To top it off, as I was checking out, I noted they have a low grade from the health inspector. Needless to say, I will not be going there again.

Moose is fun to go to as it reminds you of the meals your grandparents love and survived on prior to the days of the super super market. The sides and entrees are American down home classics. Very economical, very nice waitstaff but the quality of the food is slightly above average. For example a recent fried okra side was soggy, squash side was not pleasant, ribs were pretty fatty. The cornbread is to die for and the fried chicken (although quite peppery) was nicely done. Good value for the buck but not a culinary experience other than a nice trip down nostalgia lane.

We had friends coming through the area on Sunday, so we took them to breakfast at the Moose. Tons of food! I think I was the only one who managed to finish everything, and the total bill was about $50 for six adults. I had the chicken fried steak, which was as good as I've had anywhere, and it came with three eggs, cheesy hashbrowns, and two slices of cantelope. By the way, my previous review said the Moose doesn't advertise that they serve produce from the Farmer's Market. I was wrong; it does. Their menu says they do, and they do. They were serving cantelope and watermelon from the market last weekend.

I've always been intrigued by the idea of having a restaurant at a farmer's market, and since I pass by the Piedmont-Triad Farmer's Market four times a month, have always wanted to try it. Here's what I pictured: a chalkboard menu with seasonal specialties and local eggs, free-range chicken, grass-fed beef, and focused on fresh veggies and fruit from the market. Maybe some local pork barbecue. Perhaps 'mater sandwiches, a local delicacy that I've never had that seems to make people from around here swoon. Today, I stopped by the Market to look for local strawberries, and while I was there, went to the Moose for lunch. I have no idea where the name comes from, as Greensboro is a long way from the northern forests that moose inhabit. I ordered buttermilk fried chicken (a very occasional treat for me) mashed potatoes, and coleslaw. The menu said that the fried chicken was a breast, and I asked for a leg, since I prefer dark meat, but the server said, "No, it's not even...it's boneless...". I didn't know what she meant by "It's not even...", but when it came, I understood. But let's go back to the beginning of the meal. I was immediately served a giant biscuit with what they call apple butter. The latter seemed less like apple butter to me than a cinnamony, chunky applesauce, which was actually fine with me, since I'm not a big apple butter fan. The biscuit was a nice gesture, but was way too salty, and I could eat only a portion of it. Which turned out to be just as well. The chicken was a thin filet that was thickly crusted with breading that was highly oversalted, and served with what was referred to as a white pepper gravy. They could have just called it a white salt gravy, as that was its only flavor. So---oversalted biscuit, oversalted chicken, oversalted gravy. I've never had high blood pressure, but figured I would by the end of the meal. I spent the rest of the afternoon in a raging thirst from the sodium overload. The coleslaw came in a generous portion, and I was looking forward to its setting off the rest of the meal, but it was unfortunately swimming in an overabundance of a white, sweet, mayonnaisy dressing that for me, made it inedible. I was a little worried about trying the mashed potatoes, but they were actually pretty good, and made with real potatoes. The one item besides the mashed potatoes that I found successful was the cornbread. Containing flecks of whole corn, it tasted homemade, and was, I am happy to report, not sweet. The other positive aspect of the Moose was that all of the staff were very nice, and for that reason, I'm sorry I can't rate the place higher than this.

I've never given a bad review before, but as a born-and-bred Southerner with farm roots I'm embarrassed that this cafe is masquerading as Southern farm-to-table cooking. (To the reviewer who stated that they don't make that claim, the online menu clearly identifies it as "The Ultimate Farm to Table Restaurant.") First, service was wonderful, and prices were very reasonable. However, I was shocked at how bad the food was. The complimentary biscuit was huge but apparently had been sitting on the steam table for a while and was flabby. Accompanying applesauce was very cinnamon-y but ok. The chicken-and-dumplings were tough, chewy little nuggets in a bright yellow cream sauce. What made it bright yellow, I do not know. The cheese grits were bland. The watermelon/tomato salad was actually a bowl filled with soupy balsamic vinegar-flavored liquid containing some chunks of tomato and stringy, old watermelon. I couldn't find any feta cheese in it. The corn bread's top looked burned, so I didn't even try it. Overall a very disappointing experience.

If you are a fan of true southern food and not on a diet, or ready to break your diet, then this is a great stop for lunch. Meals are over generous and the vegetables are true southern style according to my husband. I am a yankee and not always a fan of southern style cooking but I enjoyed my meal of barbecue chicken, pinto beans, a slice of melon, and squash casserole. The casserole was huge by the way and could have easily have been my meal. Not typical squash casserole, more saucy than what i make but very tasty. My husband had the meatloaf and it was huge,he ate all his vegetables as well which is a miracle as he is not a vegetable eater, but they were cooked with ample seasoning, fat back and cooked until VERY tender, if you are not a big lover of this style than skip the cafe and get some fresh veggies, but if you grew up on this as did he, and married a yankee who can't quite cook like your mom... :) then this might be your new go to spot for anniversary and Birthdays. The biscuits, are heavenly and I don't like biscuits , fluffy, moist not crumbly or dry, and while I make apple butter that is much creamier in texture I too liked this chunky apple cinnamon delight. I liked it, cheap , large portions, nice variety (With some healthy options like chicken wraps etc.) but they are known for their down home cooking and it is what they do best. IF you want artsy, or fancy , or presentation, than maybe this is not for you. But if you want a meal that was cooked with a pinch of love and lot's of southern style, then eat on.
