Like other Reviewers our family is from California and are spoiled by getting easily accessible authentic Mexican food which isn't so common in NC. This is the real deal! Sweet ladies behind the counter take your order and prepare it while you wait. There is a salsa bar too so you can customize your meal as you like it. Great place!
It's my third straight day in the quest for authentic Mexican food in Clayton. Today, I visited Taqueria Colima. My wife still does not tire of fish tacos for lunch, so it was out the door to grab some more. And on a day like today, waiting at Don Beto's in the heat was out of the question. So begins my first discovery: It's air conditioned and cool in this place. What a welcome relief. I was greeted by the owner (I know, because I read the write up in the paper before going). The second great discovery: This place is spotless. No dust on the tables, the food prep areas were wiped down and ready for the lunch service. Plenty of seating inside. I ordered a set of Chorizo tacos and two Carne Asada tacos. As an afterthought, I asked about the fish tacos, as I hadn't seen them on the menu. And then is when I heard something that made me cringe for a second: "I'm not sure if we have them." A beat. "She usually picks up the fish from the market in the morning, but I'm not sure if she's been yet." Not only were my worst fears not confirmed (They don't sell enough to even know if they have them. A sign of old or frozen fish.), but they only order enough so that they sell out and get fresh fish. Bonus points! It turned out that they had, indeed been to the market, and my wife got her fresh fish taco. On to the food. I waited ~5-10 minutes for my order to be prepared from scratch. The sizzle was happening behind me, and great smells started to waft in my general direction. I was served tacos with very generous portions (probably the most meat of any of the tacos I've eaten this week.) The chorizo sausage was a standout for me. Very, very lean, and without the usual grease that plagues chorizo tacos. Don't get me wrong, there was still enough to season the taco. Just not enough to cause a royal mess. The fish was well seasoned and not overly hot. My wife is very, very sensitive to spices. By the color and flavor, I'd guess with Sazon Goya. A lovely annato color. I grabbed a piece of the carne asada and popped it into my mouth, and thought it a bit salty. However, with the taco, it was perfectly balanced. A tad chewier than the meat at Don Beto's, but not tough by any means. This is the one place I've been where the tacos could stand to be a bit thinner. Usually, taco consists of two masa tacos on top of each other with the meat inside. Here, they could stand to use just one. They look rustic, and I believe them to be homemade. The highlight here is the condiment bar: They don't have the variety of some, but they have everyone beat on freshness. Cilantro, radishes, white onion, salsa roja and verde(with chunks of tomatillo and cilantro)...and LIMES. You might ask "What's the big deal about limes?". At this point, limes are a premium product. They'll run a restaurant nearly $1 a piece. Which is why most restaurants in the area have switched to lemons. I haven't had a dish with a lime in over three months. That shows commitment to authenticity and quality. Everything on the bar was chilled to proper temps, which is very important for fresh produce (and your general comfort in the hours following a visit to any food establishment.) There was a huge cooler of drinks here. Broader than any selection I've seen thus far, with Tamarind and Horchata fountains at the counter. Another nice touch is a loyalty card. The sixth meal is on them (or at least, the sixth taco...I'm unclear on that point, but it's nice to get anything free, at all). Prices here are mid-range. Not the most expensive, and not the cheapest. Given the ingredients, I'd say it is a good value for the money. Beat the heat here, sit down, and enjoy an excellent meal. The people are nice, the service is quick, and the food is Fresh, with a capital "F". Notes: The place that used to be here was a below-average American Grill/Hamburger joint. Which is why I never found this place. I just assumed the other place was still open. If you're coming from Raleigh on Highway 70, the only way to get here is to make a U-turn at Walgreens.
This place is just awesome. I've eaten here three times now and it's never been less than great. This place may be better than El Toro in Garner. The food is fresh, the salsa is spicy (the red sauce is very hot!) and the service is friendly. What more could you ask for?
