One of the best eateries in Montana! All the food is fantastic and made from scratch. This is a different take on the normal Tex-Mex you get everywhere. These are authentic Mexican dishes from the region of Mexico where the owners grew up. Ask Mabel to explain a bit about the cuisine. She will likely be waiting on you and is hands-down the nicest gal you've ever met. Really great food!!!!

Hidden treasure! You will not be disappointed. Service is cozy and friendly for locals or folks from out of town. Don't let the outside fool you. It may not have the appearance of the big chains but it makes up for it everywhere else.

Really great food. It is the best in the Billings area. Nice family run restaurant with more interesting dishes than your usual taco fare. But they have a very good taco also.

Cuisine is upscale Mexican. Prices can be very high but worth it. The owner is especially nice and even sat down with us and chatted. The atmosphere could use some work with the prices they charge but doesn't seem to effect the local loyalty. They are closed on Mondays which seems odd. I would recommend the Carne Asada. Be sure to make a taco out of the salad and the meat with the delicious tortillas they serve. YUM!

What a find! We were passing through Laurel, read the reviews, and decided to give it a try. Everything was wonderful: the salsa and chips, the chili verde dinner, the fraiche (2 perfectly cooked, high quality pork chops in a yummy cream gravy) even the refried beans. I enjoyed the local clientele, families and people of all ages. Mabel was hospitable, and the cook (her husband?) could be heard singing from the kitchen. We'll be back next summer. In the meantime I have to think about whether to get the yummy fraiche again or go with cook's choice: tell them what meat you want and how hot and let the cook decide. Really glad we got into Laurel, away from the chains. Appreciated that the menu was not huge....they're not trying to do EVERYTHING here, just make sure what they serve is tops. And as for authenticity, I don't think they cook to some narrowly defined, ever constant idea of "authentic. " I don't think such a thing even exists. All cooks make salsa differently, just as they all make spaghetti differently. These people are indeed Mexican (thus, it's Mexican food) and they cook wonderful food that they and their customers enjoy, using the full range of ingredients, flavors and recipes. To compare them to the food you learned to make somewhere else from someone else's mom, or the tacos you had at a particular bar in puerto Vallarta is just as unfair as going to someone's house for dinner and complaining because they don't make meatloaf the same way as your mom. These people are cooking with love and soul!

This was once a good place to eat. Tonight we spent $50.00 on food that had no flavor. So sad.

This is where we go for a treat. My favorite is the Friache. I think that is the spelling. It is two pork chops in a creamy mushroom bacon sauce. So yummy and the pork has always been cooked perfectly. My family loves the Jonah's special. It is not on the menu, but always available. It is a steak covered in veggies, shrimp and creamy tomato sauce. Huge portion, but is still good the next day. Food is always pretty fast. Drinks are refilled often. The Chipolte steak is also a winner. Sometimes my husband will ask them to surprise him, he always loves what they bring out. We even had a birthday party of 19. All our food came out hot and at the same time. Highly recommend them!

Mabel's is authentic and delicious mexican cuisine. Not your typical boring mexican food. Mabel's chef is a master at creating mexican dishes that are appealing to the taste buds of many. I now live in Colorado and wish I could just drive 30 minutes to Mabels and get some great food like I used to. Mabel's is a mexican gem in cow country!

Best Mexican food outside of Mexico. Authentic and flavorful every time. Try the fajitas or the skirt steak-- perfect. Reasonable prices, and although the interior looks like a dive, it is top-notch and you will NOT be disappointed!

There are few choices for authentic Mexican food in the Billings area. You cannot go wrong here. I am a Mexican-American who moved to Montana and I know what real Mexican foods tastes like. I would recommend the Carne Asada. The meat is very flavorful and juicy. The shredded cabbage (citrus slaw) is an excellent compliment to the meat. The food comes quickly and is never disappointing. The host/owner is very personable and will even chat with you. I have eaten here several times the past few years and always come back for more. The menu is a little pricy, but you get what you pay for. Enjoy! They are open 11-2 and 5-8 Tuesday thru Friday. They are only open 5-8 on Saturday. They are closed Sunday and Monday. Family owned restaurant.

Ate at Mabel last evening. Must say was disappointed. Food was so/so, retried beans soupy, chips straight from the bag, enchilada bland and service lacking. Maybe being from Arizona my expectations were too high. Sorry Mabel's but will not return.

I'm kind of a salsa snob, and tend to judge a Mexican Restaurant pretty quickly into the visit based on that. From salsa to tacos, this was fairly typical fare for the Billings Mexican food we've tried. I can appreciate I'm probably in the minority -- most of the people I love in Montana really like Mabel's, probably don't like the same kind of Mexican food that I do, and have a very different standard when eating "authentic" Mexican food. I would go even as far to say that I respect Mabel's Kitchen for making Mexican food that is very popular in this area. As a spicy Mexican food loving girl who grew up in a town with a nearly 50% Mexican population, learned to make salsa and enchiladas from my friend, Paloma's, mom, Aida, from Mexico, lived in Texas, then moved to Montana, I, personally, do not like the food at Mabel's Kitchen.

If you like stale chips from a bag for your chips and salsa, and taquitos from a box instead of legit chicken flautas, then Mabel's is the place for you. Everything tasted like it was bought at Wal Mart. Some friends of ours recommended this place and we will definitely not ever be going back. I seriously would have rather had Taco Bell. At least I know what to expect there.

My family has lived in the area for many years. I have since moved away but every time I come home, Mabel's is a must visit. What it lacks in atmosphere it makes up for in amazing food and an incredibly friendly owner/operator family.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
