Very comfortable in saying this is the best Mexican food in town. The portions are huge. I was not expecting that, because I have walked out of many of the other Taquerias in Helena still hungry after spending 12+ dollars. The food tastes great and they have really good specials. I have tried four different menu items there and they have all been extremely good. I recommend trying whatever they have on special or the tacos loco. The Macho nachos are also very good they don't skimp on the toppings they include jalapenos, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, cheese, beans, green onions, olives, and your choice of one of their four signature meats for around 7.25 The owners are also very friendly and you get service with a smile.

My experience was not the same as the other reviewers. A co-worker and I ordered two lunch specials. The rice and beans were very bland, as was the sauce. Two different meats in my tamales -- which tasted more like cornbread, and the meat was definitely day old in the one. It was Americanized Mexican at best, and there are a couple better places in town. I don't recommend the tamales or enchiladas based on this visit. Bummer!

Delicious food! Coming from Southern California we were impressed by the tastiness of this place. Also the customer service was great would definitely return of we were staying in the area.

This place has some of the best Mexican food I've eaten, and it's in Montana nonetheless! Salsa is delicious. The Burritos are HUGE, filled with high quality ingredients, and grilled on the outside.

WOW. This place is such a hidden gem! Everything was so tasty and well made. The cook talked to me directly about his recipes so I knew what would be in the food. Great service! Everyone was very sweet and helpful. The chips are homemade and the salsa is fresh. Good beans. The meat is well prepared. Seating is small, so be prepared to take your food away if the tables are full. So yummy!

This place is outstanding. Environment. Expect a genuinely warm greeting from owners Adam and Erika when you come in the door. This place is small and personal. It has the feel of walking into a relative's kitchen in the middle of Thanksgiving. If you frequent this establishment expect to see familiar faces throughout the weekdays jockeying to find themselves a place to sit. The regulars know the routine and won't hesitate to ask to sit next to you due to extremely limited indoor seating when the weather will not permit use of the patio. If you can handle the tight quarters and aren't shy; eat your food on premises. They will bring chips and salsa to you while you wait. Food Outstanding flavor and quality. The meats are slow simmered and provides for consistently high quality in terms of texture and flavor. You can order most menu items with one of four meat options. I don't eat pork and I prefer the shredded beef option in most of my dishes. I switch my menu choice between the Mexican Street Tacos, burritos, quesoaladilla, or taco salad with the occasional chalkboard special to add more variety. I have never been disappointed in any of the dishes. Service Outstanding. The help can see you and are quick to drop off chips and salsa and wipe down the tables. Price Too low for the epic lunch you receive. Expect to pay between 6 to 8 dollars if you don't get a soda. Overall Best lunch in Helena that I have found so far. Support this business. I would recommend either coming early (11am) or late (1pm) to somewhat avoid the noon rush.

Yes, yes, yes! The smells were amazing, the place charming and clean, people friendly, and service fast and the food was so so good. Even one taco at under three dollars was big, fresh and delicious.

I was surprised by how great of food they have. Refried beans, rice, Street Tacos are great. I also have had their beef enchiladas with the traditional sauce. The burritos are good size as well. Only downside is their hours of operation. Wish they were open for dinner. The service is excellent.

We usually go here once a week. Always great food, it reminds me of my grandmothers & mother's cooking as a kid growing up. We haven't anything here that wasn't top notch. Adam and Erika are great and very welcoming and we've come to know them personally. It does get really busy over lunch, but they have some tables outside now. We tend to take a take lunch on the go to avoid the crowd though.

Good food at a good price, Please don't change the food to accommodate the Pinche Gringo's, thanks for keeping the food real! I wish you were open for breakfast. Papas con huevos y chorizo y queso

I live in Denver CO and I travel all over. After seeking out and having some of the best rated tacos in Colorado, Texas, Michigan and parts of Mexico, I was skeptical about El Vaquero Taqueria. I was stunned by how delicious the carnitas tacos with guacamole and sour cream were. Not only that, but they were huge and inexpensive. I'm writing this review almost 6 hours later and my stomach still feels like it's going to explode. If you are in the area, you would be doing your self a great service to stop in and grab a taco. 6 out of 5 stars!

I am so glad we finally stopped at this place! It can be a little difficult to find really good, authentic Mexican food here in Montana. But this place hits the nail on the head! Warm, welcoming staff, and wonderfully delicious food make this a must stop for us at lunch-time! I do wish they were open during dinner, but hopefully they will expand with time. A favorite lunch spot!

Great fresh food and really friendly crew. I love the street tacos the best. Really generous portions and tasty with the squeeze of lime on the top.

"Taqueria" is kind of a misnomer as most of the menu isn't actually tacos. They are focused on take-out, and there is very, very limited seating. Most of the menu was also pretty typical US-Mex fare like enchiladas and burritos with rice and refried beans, but there were a few standout exceptions. First, the "street-style" carnitas tacos were excellent. Tender, yet slightly chewy meat, onion, cilantro, lime, and oddly, cotija cheese. Second, the guacamole was outstandingly fresh and vibrant, with the perfect chunky/creamy ratio. Lastly, the prices are a steal. I'm sick of everyone in Montana complaining on Yelp about places being "pricey". I've almost never dined somewhere here where I thought I was being ripped off. If you want cheap food, eat at home or some crap fast food. That said, El Vaquero is dirt cheap for what you get. The food is good, and the portions large.

Limited but terrific and affordable menu. Very friendly staff. A vegetarian burrito, hooray! It's hard to enjoy any so-called Mexican food here after a decade in Southern California, but this place is legit. Great guacamole, too.

Ive visited this place around 4-5 times and its really great. Tacos have fresh salsa, cotija cheese, and nice tortillas. The carnitas and chile colorado are some of the best Ive had anywhere. All of this for ~5$ for a meal. Spend $7 and you'll be stuffed.

Good bean burrito #5 on the menu, busy for lunch, staff friendly and helpful...go there.

Drove past this place a couple times and every time I drove past it there were people inside getting food, decided to give it a shot one day, and holy guacamole! Im confident in saying this is the best Mexican food in town, huge portions, very reasonable prices, the meats are amazing, pico de gio is fresh made, the guacamole is divine.... The owners running the place have been married for like 25+ years which I overheard them say, and always serve you with a smile. Ive tried the Vegetarian Burriot, Buro Burrito, Macho Nachos, and they all have been amazing. Instead of going to Taco Bell go here, you will pay the same price, it takes the same amount of time, and you support a local company who does everything local, if you haven't tried it, YOU NEED TO! Los Cazadores on Canyon Ferry and Wylie RD use to be my fav Mexican in town but 2-3 years ago they went down hill with raising the prices, reducing portion size, and their kid who was working one day pi*sed me off with his rude service, very unappreciative, I have never been back and me along with my parents would eat there ATLEAST once a week.

Great food and very friendly owners running the place. Gave away some free drinks on their "Grand Opening" along with some Mexican Wedding Cookies, which was a nice touch. Burritos were good. The $3.50 taco was very large. Everything looked and tasted fresh. Debated between a solid 4 star and 5-star. Considering they just opened (and were still very good) and the limited Mexican in Helena, that bumped it to 5 stars. Their prices are also very reasonable. Wish they would be open for dinner all days (and not just Fri-Sun).

Actually, this a 5-star lunch joint for Helena. Open for dinner Fri.-Sun. Great, fresh chips and salsa, and guacamole. The tacos locos are pretty darn good. You get to choose the filling -- beef, chicken, pork, etc. The (beef) chili Colorado was spiced really nicely. If you don't like tacos, there are other menus choices as well as daily specials. This place has already caught on with the local lunch crowd, but the wait for take-out isn't long. You can always call your order in by phone so it's ready when you get there. Seating (and parking) are limited so don't count on scoring a table. The staff are very welcoming and the prices are reasonable. I will definitely be back soon.

This place doesn't skimp on portions. The menu is simple but that is a good thing since they do eveything really well that I have had so far. Plan on making it a takeout since seating is very limited. It's a great place for lunch if you work downtown and need to take something back to the office. It is owner operated which is always a plus in my book. Really nice folks.

Super impressed. Well made Mexican-American food with some dishes that trend towards the authentic. Some of the nicest people ever running it, they clearly make food with love.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
