We ended up in Natchez late one evening on an "explore Mississippi" trip and chose tamales for dinner. We ordered a dozen tamales and some chips with salsa. everything came out super fast and the tamales were steaming hot. The tamales were good and had flavor but I wish they offered different types of fillings. I love spicy tamales (spicy anything to be honest) but these weren't spicy at all. I topped them with the salsa which helped. I don't want to downplay the tamales, they had flavor and were good, and I am just adding my two cents so maybe they will offer various flavors and fillings in the future. Overall a pleasant experience and if I visit Natchez again I'd definitely eat here again.

Great spot for a quick, cheap bite of yummy food! Casual atmosphere and extremely fast service! I've tried the tamales with chili and the nachos with chicken and cheese. Both dishes were delicious and filling! The tamales had a nice kick, but weren't too spicy, and they hit the spot after a long day of touring the city! I'd suggest going if you're looking for a yummy, inexpensive, fast sit down place and a refreshing drink to cool off!

I thought the tamales were pretty good. They tasted like tamales ought to taste with corn and lime flavors, and, they were firm. I found the meat filling adequate. The chili tastes a bit like canned chili, but is still good, although not spicy. If you do not like hot and spicy, this place is for you. I found everything to be mild. That includes the tamales, chili and fire and ice pickles. The pickles had a nice balance of flavors. Chili is served with crackers. You have to pay extra for corn chips. There is ample parking on both sides of the restaurant. Table space is ample, although it is kind of a small place. This is counter service which I always like as it is so much faster and you save the tip. The sales tax is included in the food price, so everybody can deal with round numbers. I did not try the drinks so I cannot help you there. However, they use a mix for their margaritas instead of fresh lime and triple sec or Citronge. Drinks are served in plastic cups. I look forward to going back the next time I am in Natchez.

This place is pretty awesome! The tamales were stellar, but the margaritas were sub-par. The service was incredibly fast and the atmosphere is good. I came with a big group of friends and they got our food and drinks in record time. And the food was cheap and good. I'd come back.

My wife and I were in Natchez recently and she had read about Fat Mama's so we wanted to check them. We both decided to try out the Gringo Pie for lunch and were glad we did. The tamales, chile, cheese, jalapenos - they all tasted fresh and satisfying. The only thing we regretted was that we didn't have time to try the "Knock You Naked" Margaritas! Well, I also regretted finding out when I got home that they had Margarita mix that we could've got while we were there. Since you will be there longer, get some great Mexican food - and some Margaritas!

Really cute place! The Knock You Naked Margarita is so yummy! Friendly staff, cute decorations!

Quick friendly service. Food was perfectly portioned. The pickles were awesome! Expected more spicy but they were actually really great just the way they were! You can't come here without trying the Knock you Naked margarita, which are delicious! Even for a non-margarita drinker like me!! Definitely worth the stop

I've never really eaten tamales, but I was looking for something local and fun for lunch while in Natchez for the day. This place was very busy. It looks like it would be a lot of fun in the evening with their "knock you naked" margaritas, but alas, I was on business. I had the gringo pie (3 tamales topped with chili, cheese, onions, and jalapenos). It was very good, although I could've used more spice. Service was very friendly. The locals eating their all stared at me a lot, leading me to believe that either I was having a particularly bad hair day, or they don't get a lot of visitors. Either way, 4 stars. Yummy place for tamales.

On a day trip to Natchez, we were in the mood for something a little casual. This place seems to fit the mood. You walk up to the counter, order and wait for your name to be called. There's a nice outdoor patio which is where we chose to sit. The food was just ok. The tamales were mostly corn with very little meat. And the corn is all I could taste. We got nachos and that was ok. They serve Abita beer which is a plus. Large glasses. I couldn't finish mine. Overall, a good place for a group of young friends on a tight budget.

If this placed was called Skinny Mama's Tamales, no one would go. Sometimes a place is all in a name. I think this place is all about marketing correctly. People love mexican food, outdoor dining and margaritas. All of those things equal fun and sometimes fun is more important than taste.....especially after a few margaritas. The girlfriend and I came here after spending the entire day and Natchez. We order a Gringo Pie, 6 Tamales, and the Natchez nachos. The Gringo pie is 3 tamales, chili, shredded cheese, jalapenos and onions. I'm not a big fan of tamales per se. I've never been wowed other than once when a former co worker made some. These were no different, they were just ok to me. The natchez nachos were just chips, queso, shredded chicken, black olives and jalapenos. These were good but in a ball park concession stand kind of way. Nothing that made me go wow. Everything is superfast because its all precooked and then slapped on a paper plate. All of that food plus 2 draft Abita Amber's and it only cost 28.00. A fun time for a cheap price.

I was on an overnight trip to Natchez on a Sunday and there aren't that many local places open, so I was excited when this restaurant was. We arrived at 6:40 p.m. and placed our order at the counter. The food arrived very quickly. But at 6:55, an employee came to our table to let us know they were closing in 5 minutes and we had to leave. I was honestly shocked as we had a table of food sitting in front of us that we hadn't eaten. I understand you need to close at some point, but that could have been mentioned to us when we were ordering so I could have gotten everything to go. Instead, I had to sit there and move all of our food into go containers myself. Have you ever tried to do that with nachos? The food was fine, but I would have made very different choices if I had known we would be eating the food out of to go containers after driving back to the hotel. Nachos don't travel well. Neither did the mexican soup. Cold tamales are actually not that good. The highlights: the hot roast beef poboy is quite good. The cornbread was tasty with onions and peppers in it. Overall, this would be fine if we hadn't been made to leave. Alas, I've now been kicked out of a tamale restaurant...

I've always been a fan of Fat Mama's Tamales. It is a great spot to grab an afternoon drink or hang out with friends. I am typically a fan of margarita's made with fresh ingredients, but I give Fat Mama's a pass on their high fructose drinks since they have managed to combine a fun atmosphere with a flavorful margarita. I would not recommend Fat Mama's as a planned dinner spot. It feels more like a spot you go first to drink and then you later think about having some tamales or an appetizer. I took down some Nachos on my last visit so I probably shouldn't complain. Be sure to have a Margarita in this place and also come wearing your best skivvies cause something is bound to come off before the night ends.

This place was a real hoot. The food and atmosphere are excellent. The pricing is reasonable. An unexpected treat in Natchez, Mississippi.

My wife and I ate here on Saturday, 4-19-14 around 5 in the afternoon. We ordered 2 Margaritas, Chips and Salsa, Gringo pie, and a Ham and Cheese Po Boy. While I'm not a fan of frozen margaritas, these were very good-we didn't ask if they could be made "rocks". The Po Boy was excellent-very flavorful and lots of ingredients, as were the homemade potato chips that came with it. But, the good parts ended there. The chips and salsa were really bad. The chips were of the hard, taco-shell variety and the salsa was a pureed paste, tasting like thick, unseasoned tomato sauce, with a watery surrounding in the bowl. The Gringo pie tasted right out of a can. Especially the chili, but the tamales did also-very bland and no zip. The portions were good-no issue there, but you expect more for $30+ from food that is so easy to make tasteful at home. The interior was great, as was their deck outside to the right of the entrance, and the atmosphere in both areas was relaxing and fun. As a place sporting a Mexican theme though, they could do a knockdown business if they just got a grip on the Mexican food part of their menu, It should not be that difficult to spice things up, especially if they're making things from scratch. We went there after reading the reviews here with some trepidation, and should have followed our guts and gone elsewhere. We'd stop for a drink again, but would stay away from the menu.

Great draft beer and amazing poboys!! Fun, casual atmosphere. Sit inside when it's hot out or enjoy the patio when the weather is perfect. Friendly staff and super fast service

It was okay. It had a relaxed, colorful decor. My daughter had the Natchez nachos, which she said we're good. I had the boudain, which was not so good. I like how you can refill your own drinks and that you can take your cup home. Overall, decent with good prices.

Ordered Tamales, chicken nachos and knock you naked margaritas. All were good, especially the margaritas! I want to be clear- This is not 5 star Mexican cuisine. But it's fun, the service is good and the food is above average. Always a fun place to stop in Natchez

Tamales were, well, tamales without the can metal taste. No special order; tamales are a mainstay there. Nothing special, nice and spicy. Ordered at the bar, no waitress service. Then took a table. Then we waited for about 30 minutes, they never came to us to let us know they were ready. They said they "called" our name, but none of us 4 heard the call and we were seated about 4 feet from the bar. Football game on TV--excitement may have distracted. Noise filled, like any sports bar.

Stopped here yesterday and had a great lunch. It has counter service, is very clean, and servings are generous. We ordered a piece of boudin, taco soup, and a Gringo tamale pie and the bill was ~ $16.50.. We'll be back the next time we're in the area.

Had the best time and enjoyed great food!!! Will for sure be a regular stop for me when in town!!!

  • Andy R.

Meh. It's naked tamales. I'm no tamale connoisseur but I like my tamales "wet" with a green or red sauce. These are just naked tamales. No bite to them either. Very mild. They do offer a 3 tamale dish served like Waffle House hash browns - scattered, covered and diced. In hindsight maybe I should've ordered that. But doesn't that really defeat the purpose of eating tamales at a place known for their tamales? Perhaps I'm just ignorant to how MS tamales are served. Nothing memorable here. Beer was cold though.

Don't really care much for the food, but the margaritas are great! Good place to sit down and socialize with friends.

I have had to work once a week in Natchez for the past three weeks. I have eaten at Fat Mamas two out of the three weeks. I love the Gringo pie which is all I can say because it's the only thing I've ever gotten. On a previous review someone claimed that the tamales and the chili were out of a can. They are NOT out of a can. The chili tastes just like my moms homemade chili and the jalapeños added on top provide just enough heat without causing misery. I love Fat Mamas. If you're in Natchez try it out. BTW... It's not a Mexican restaurant, it's a place to get tamales. Don't come in expecting someone to place a basket of chips and a tub of salsa down for you to eat. It won't happen. Cheers to Fat Mamas and if you check it out I hope you have fun'

Great place to kick back and have a beer or two with some friends. I don't drink margaritas unless for holidays but it's decent there. Seems like all the women go there in their workout outfit to drink instead of the gym. I noticed that for some reason. To me that's what it's known for is the margaritas and the beers.

Cute place with good drinks and so-so food. Unless you just really love tamales, go somewhere else.

I love tamales, but these were mushy and without taste. The Margarita was just okay, not bad, but not great.

    (2)
  • Shane C.

Food is OK-to-good. The margaritas are frozen, tasty, and WEAK on alcohol. I paid for an extra shot of tequila and it was still a below average margarita.

  • David C.

The tamales are awesome. Every now and then I drive up from Zachary, Louisiana (80+ miles) just to buy a dozen and take them over on the west side under the bridge in Vidalia and eat them off the trunk my car while watching the Mississippi River flow by. I really like this place. I have not eaten anything else but all the food looks delicious. David E. Carroll Jr.

I love little, local roadside restaurants and Fat Mamas is another awesome restaurant in Natchez. I love tamales and tamales for some reason seem to be big down here and these tamales were awesome. Also, I had something called Boudin. Supposedly its an area specialty. It was very odd looking and tasting. It looks kind of like pig intestines and It kind of reminded me a little of chitlins. It was very good and I would get it again. Nice ambience and cool decorations. Will definitely be back.

These are Mississippi Tamales, not to be confused with those of the Mexican, Southwest or other known varieties. Mississippi Tamales are in a class of their own and these are an outstanding example of them. An order of half dozen at $4.75, more than enough for a meal, and come with saltine crackers - a necessity to fully appreciate this Mississippi delicacy. The restaurant is within walking distance of downtown Natchez and has both indoor seating and an outdoor patio. Denver Mullican

Tamales tasted alright. Not great. Not bad. The nachos were disappointing. Very light on for ingredients, and it's not as though the ingredients were that well combined or prepared. I paid a buck extra for chili and got about a teaspoons worth. Décor was surprisingly bright and cheerful feeling. They let a guy light up his fag at the bar which signalled the time for my exit. Bill was $15. cheap but not good value for money when just taking food into account. Service was friendly though -so I give it 2.5

  • Ben Z.

Probably the best tamales you're going to find in this particular part of the country. Don't forget to try the fire and ice pickles if you like sweet and spicy. I wouldn't really call this a "sports bar" since there are only a couple of TVs and the place doesn't lend itself to sitting at the "bar" to have a few drinks a watch a game. One person at a time ordering so get ready to wait if anyone is there when you get there.

Pretty good spot for a beer and some tamales. The pickles are great, good atmosphere, and the margaritas are really good, but only frozen. Not a luxury dining sop, but really good for what it claims to be.

We had a nice time. Tamales were good. Margaritas were great. Never did get necked, but had fun.

great service and hospitality ... apparently I had no idea that I've never eaten a real 'Tamale' before until I came here! I'm no expert but these look about as authentic and homemade as they get. You should order a 1/2 dozen just to try it. I also ordered the chili which came with a side of Jalpeno cornbread. Absolutely delicous. The chili was super meaty and the cornbread with nice and moist. however, i'm only giving it 3 stars (wish i could add a 1/2) because the decor looks a little bit plain/sterile and i'm just not that into tamles. Maybe a few more years it'll fill in.

While I am not a fan of their tamales or chili. The Po-Boys are really good as well as the home made chips that come on the side with them. The Boudin is also rather tasty, I just wish it was grilled and had a little bit of spice. The also have one of the best selections of draft beer in Natchez.

A friend recommend Fat Mama's when she heard we were in Natchez. When we arrived we saw a patio where every table was full so we knew this was a good place to eat. The inside had tables also and they were full. We noticed that the line hardly ever stopped. I gave it only 4 stars because the menu was limited and you had to order at the counter and pick up your food. I had Nachos and they were delicious. The chips were light and crisp. The cheese sauce was also light and savory. Chopped onions, olives, jalapeños, chopped tomatoes and chicken made this a delicious meal. Yes, a meal. And the price was right! This is a fun place to eat and the food is delicious. Don't miss it.

This is a place that was recommended to us by many who learned we were visiting Natchez. The atmosphere here is more like a fast food restaurant (you must order at the counter) however, the food is better than "fast food" and the atmosphere is lots of fun. Very comfortable outdoor seating with many happy customers both inside and out. The prices were very reasonable. You get to keep your cup when you order a soft drink, nice surprise. We would definitely eat here again.

This is a Natchez institution. The atmosphere has changed a bit since it move across Canal, but in my opinion for the better. You just can't go wrong with the Tamales and I haven't been able to find any anywhere that are as tasty. Get 1/2 dozen and a side of fire and ice pickles and a Knock you naked Margareta and you are in business. The pickles are both sweet and spicy and the Margaritas are served in fun souvenir cups. The other reviews are right about the Nachos. Just not that good, but the poboys are! There is plenty of seating both inside and out. Service is always fast and friendly.

I just love this place. I have enjoyed the food every time I have visited over the past 2 years. The tamales are some of the best I have had, and the fire and ice pickles are great as a side. Wish I was in the area in the evenings to take advantage of the patio, and the "Knock You Naked Margaritas". The place has a bright and cheery look and feel, and the staff is very friendly and efficient.

Over rated as far as I am concerned. The nachos I ordered Barely had any toppings and I also paid a dollar extra for the chili. Probably got a teaspoon. The margarita was good however it was served in a plastic disposable cup. Not high quality but it was good. It was also $5.00. This place was small and allowed smoking inside. So, all you smokers out there this is a good place to spend some time and have a drink and smoke. I would also like to point out that it did not smell like smoke when I entered the building. The only reason I knew they allowed smoking was because I saw some nurses smoking while drinking margaritas.

My friends and I were visiting from out of town, and we stopped at Fat Mama's as soon as we got to Natchez. We were pleasantly surprised. The menu included more than the just the tamales promised in the restaurant's name but was not truly extensive; the main dishes were more or less limited to tamales, taco salad, taco soup, nachos, and chili. The tamales were cheap and delicious. We ordered a 1/2 dozen for $4.50. The taco soup, loaded with cheese, black beans, chicken, and jalapenos, was nearly too much for me to finish, and the cornbread that came on the side was scrumptious. My margarita didn't exactly knock me naked but was tasty nonetheless. We got each got a plastic cup with the Hot Mama's Tamales logo emblazoned on it to go when we left -- a Mississippi souvenir! The restaurant itself is quite colorful. It's certainly not a high-end establishment, but my friends and I found it to be a good deal for lunch and a fine welcome to Natchez.

If you want to sit around with friends or meet new ones this place is great. Best margaritas and coldest beer in the area. Nice patio seating is available. Menu is limited but what they do offer is tasty.

Don't expect a full Mexican menu. This little spot offers nachos, taco salad, tamales and something called gringo casserole. It's an odd menu, that includes taco soup, homemade pickles and jalapeno cornbread. The taco salad was great--fresh, loaded with lettuce, tomatoes, olives and well-seasoned chicken. I love that homemade ranch dressing--you know the thin kind, full of herbs. I could drink it. Thankful for their pet-friendly patio. Restaurant was clean, service was great.

Pretty good for a tamale in a hurry. Have not tried anything else yet. Overall a good tamale!

  • Ryann J.

I loved the frozen margarita (with free plastic cup) and the nachos were good. My husband liked the tamales. There were very limited options for vegetarians, but the prices were ok and the people friendly. We were able to sit outside on the patio ith our dogs, so it gets 4 stars instead of 3.

What Fat Mama is known for is their "Margaritas and Tamales" which I can honestly say they have mastered. Best Tamales in Natchez! The "Knock You Naked Margaritas" are hard to beat! The only downfall on the Margaritas is that it only comes frozen! Be prepared for brain freeze, I suffered from two in 10 minutes, which felt like an ice pick through my left eye. OUCH!!!! For this reason alone, is why I drink my Margaritas on the rocks!!! Their menu is quite unique, which list another local favorite their homemade sweet pickles called, "Fire and Ice." Sweet pickles on a Tex-Mex menu?? Yes, it's strange, but who cares they're A-MAZE-ING!!! Before you leave don't forget to check out their bottle cap art up on the wall! Apparently, a local artist found something creative to do with all the used bottle caps. There is a Gecko, a small armadillo made with bottle caps and old license plates, and even a Fleur de lis. Unfortunately, I was to drunk and forgot to purchase the Fleur de lis. :(

My favorite place to eat in Natchez and, apparently, my first real tamale! Go with a friend, and order a half-dozen tamales, the Mexican cornbread, and the nachos, and you'll be super happy (and full) with barely a dent in your wallet.

Salsa not up to par...maybe I just had too high of expectations. Tamales kind of plain also.

Tamales were awesome - what a surprise to find in the middle of Mississippi! Highly recommended. Very good margaritas also.

Just popped in for take out as I wanted to taste the tamales to compare them to others I've had in Mississippi Delta country. I found them to be the best Mississippi tamales that I had on this trip as they are closer is taste to the tamales I've had in Mexican restaurants in the west. Although I didn't dine in, it looked like it would be a fun place to have an inexpensive meal and a drink or a few beers.

  • Joel E.

This place is really cool! I would not have expected a little Mexican restaurant like this to be in Natchez. They serve one of the best margaritas around and they have really good, cheap tamales. The people are nice and it's a fun atmosphere. Worth the stop!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
