Honestly, the bottle of Best Choice brand Maple Flavored Syrup sitting on our table next to the napkins should have been our first clue. Heading home from a weekend of canoeing 4 of us decided to try something in town for breakfast before hitting the road. Kathy's Kountry Kitchen implied some down-home cooking... Not so much. More like down-home reheating. They have a full menu with lots of choices and also a breakfast buffet that's all you can eat. We ordered single entrees. Turns out, if we had gotten our food from the buffet it would at least have been hot. Let's start with the service. On this busy Sunday morning I spotted 4 employees. A woman running the grill, a young waitress, a young man running the register and another young man doing pretty much everything else. They all appeared to be over worked and under trained. The waitress did a good job of getting the orders taken and turned in quickly, she answered all of our questions. When the food was delivered, in a timely manner, I noticed that the young man was carrying 4 plates in 2 hands, as in two stacks of two. I sure hope the bottoms of those plates were clean... My blueberry french toast, made with blueberry bread, could have been good if it had been made fresh. Instead it was skimpy batter on commercial bread, cooked to just barely brown, overly salted in some places, and half of it was almost dusted with powdered sugar. The Tex-Mex omelet was good, lots of fresh veggies inside, until you get to the glop of bargain-bin processed-cheese-food oozing all over one end of it. The biscuits and gravy were both cold, the biscuits frozen and reheated and the gravy was straight from a mix. A Hashbrown-Scramble looked promising but suffered from the same alien-cheese and cold gravy issues. Three sides of hash browns were ordered, all three requested extra crispy, all three were served barely thawed from the bag. The "toast" was almost warm bread. Looking to rehydrate we all stuck with water, not a single glass was refilled. While standing in line at the counter to pay our bill we could see right into the kitchen, I watched the waitress make chocolate milk with 5 heaping spoons-full of powdered Nestle Quick and pour orange juice from a gallon jug of Sunny D. We also got a good close look at the fish food (for the large aquarium) that's stored right above the buffet along with the salt and pepper. Watch you don't grab the wrong can! As we walked back through the dining room to leave there were several parties looking to get a seat but the 6 or so booths in the front of the house were all dirty. I told one gentleman he'd probably just be better off going somewhere else. If only someone had been there to warn us. I guess we'll try something else next time we're in town.
